WITH ALANA WILKIE

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PAINTING? I’ve been creating for as long as I can remember. My family are very creative and supportive, it’s something I can’t imagine ever being able to live without doing. I started painting more seriously about 10 years ago.

There’s so much happening across Toowoomba’s galleries, theatres, schools and various creative groups that we have decided to give the arts its own page. If you have any art events get in touch through our social media @stylemagazinestoowoomba

WHAT SORT OF ART DO YOU FOCUS ON? I focus on creating highly detailed realistic paintings. I like to create an image through making a collage either digitally or through cutting out found imagery to create a unique composition. A narrative is created through introducing a new element to an image which is open to the viewers interpretation. It is usually a juxtaposition of two elements that don’t fit together in reality such as a black and white photograph paired with a sundae ice cream. My artworks are based on creating a fantasy using romantic images of the past, present and future.

CREATIVE INTERPRETATION BY MAREE CAMERON From Saturday, November 7, to Sunday, December 6. Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery

HOW DO YOU GET STARTED ON A PIECE? As my artworks are very meticulous, I have a specific routine I like to follow. First, I create a collage either on my laptop or by cutting out images. Then I grid up the new composition and draw it onto a carefully primed canvas. Then I spend many hours painting, building up layers of thin paint to create depth. It is a long process I have fine-tuned but each painting still has its challenges. It is a satisfying process and rewarding when you finally let go and call an artwork finished.

On display at Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery is a new body of work incorporating pastels, watercolours and acrylics by local artist Maree Cameron. Cameron has a passion to create and is drawn to moments of introspection with the natural world. Creative Interpretation presents works by Cameron that focus on her love of the country, wildlife and the special moments she has shared with both. Gallery open Tuesday to Saturday 10.30am to 3.30pm and Sundays 1pm to 4pm. WHERE DID YOU LEARN TO PAINT? I have taught myself many things I currently do through trial and error, but I did also complete a Bachelor of Fine Art (Painting) at RMIT in Melbourne.
