2020 Formal Fashion trend report

2020 Formal Fashion trend report

The class of 2020 had their prayers answered as they were allowed to put on a gown and suit and celebrate the last 13 years of schooling. What seemed like an event that was going to be canceled, like everything else, has gone ahead in most states and territories and students could get glamoured up for their formals.

Abby Kheir is a dress goddess, founder, CEO and chief designer of the trending glamour brand Abyss by Abby. She says production has been ramped up thanks to sales going through the roof.

"Fashion this year is glitz and glam. People are fed up with 2020 - they've had enough, and they want to celebrate their school formal and end of year party in style. "We are even seeing girls buying two and three dresses to ensure they've got options,” she says. Abby says most of the trends that they say are around the ‘wow’ factor.

“Everyone wants to celebrate through fashion this year, “The more bling the better. “Everyone is tired of being cooped up and they want to take glam to the next level, they want to enjoy themselves and look and feel fabulous,” she says.

Here are the top five hot formal trends international fashion designer Abby Kheir says Aussie girls grabbed this formal season: Cut outs, bling, satin, two pieces and asymmetrical.

Bling has been a beloved feature on formal dresses since before I can remember. But this year traditional bling is getting a 2020 shake up. Beaded bodices with sewn-on large crystals are out, and fully sequined gowns are in.

From slinky slips to corseted gowns – satin is in. It’s classy, stylish and incredibly luxurious. Satin is a great alternative for students who want to shine bright but without the extravagance of a sequined dress.

Asymmetrical gowns are on trend this formal season in two big ways – a glamorous side leg slit and a show stopping one-shoulder feature. A leg slit is fun, exciting, and – of course – makes hitting the dance floor all the more easier, not that dancing is allowed.

Two-pieces scream fun and fashionable, transforming the street-wear trend into a modern formal fashion statement. Pick a two-piece suit or a bralettestyle top and matching skirt teams for a fashionforward look.

Side-stomach cut-outs, back cut-outs, feature shoulder cut-outs are all super popular this formal season. The added detail of a cut-out really brings the cool-factor to any garment – it’s purposeful and playful.
