elcome to this fantastic edition of Style Magazine! As the weather has warmed up, the Style team has been busy both in our air-conditioned office and out in the heat to make sure this issue is a great journey for you, our readers. Not only have we been scouring out all the best events and Melbourne Cup happenings, but we also have a very special story to share. When Lyndal Johns had a blood transfusion that was supposed to save her life, she never thought it would mean living with HIV for the rest of her life just from a doctor’s tragic mistake. Now the oldest surviving HIV victim in Australia, our beautiful lady shares her story and relentless optimism on pages 8 and 9. This month we also catch up with some inspiring local mums who rode over 400km. After hearing how difficult it was for people in rural and remote communities to access heart health facilities and testing, these close friends pulled together a group of about 30 and cycled from Brisbane to Meandarra to raise funds. Read all about their journey and friendship on pages 10 and 11. With the arrival of October comes the spring horse racing carnival, as well as many other events as we start heading into summer. We’ve dedicated this issue to everything you’ll need for the event season — from keeping safe in the sun (p32) to fashion trends (p28), to a new look at the typical fascinator (p21). So grab a cuppa or cold drink, put your feet up, and enjoy the October edition of Style Magazine Til next month, The Style Team

Leading the cheer BY CLARE STANDFAST

CHEERLEADING TUTOR LYNDAL JOHNS HAS BEEN LIVING WITH HIV SINCE 1984 THE REPERCUSSIONS OF A TRAGIC MISTAKE DURING A BLOOD TRANSFUSION

Heartland! Oh, I love it,” Lyndal Johns says, smiling. I can’t help but smile back in her warm, kind presence. She makes me feel at home. “I can see myself living on the verandah, nothing pretentious, cooking cakes... with the horses.” Lyndal fiddles with the sugar sachet, chatting about tv shows and her family. To the naked eye, Lyndal is an average 71-year-old lady – a cheerleading teacher that has warmed the hearts of young and old for many, many years. She is firm on good manners and hard work, and the young girls in her classes adore her. After receiving a contaminated plasma donation in 1984, Lyndal Johns was diagnosed as HIV-positive, and a stigma-driven life was born. Now, Lyndal’s lifelong burden is being used for others’ gain – she is hoping to educate others about HIV. “When I get well, I’m going to every school,” she nods, determined. “Initially, I declined to do this story, but my friend showed me a story in the Chronicle about the increase of STDs and things in the area. It happened to mention two people that had contracted HIV. I looked at that and I thought, oh my goodness... it was like it was incidental. Oh, by the way, two people have HIV, and I think that was wrong.” IN 1984, Lyndal Johns was rushed to the Blacktown District Hospital after suffering a suspected cerebral haemorrhage and was given what was

8 | October 2017

thought to be a ‘life-saving’ transfusion. At the time, strikes were affecting the New South Wales hospital services – coincidentally, Lyndal felt grateful to have the transfusion. Eighteen months later, she received a phone call after donating blood to the Red Cross stating the problem – that the plasma she was given was contaminated and she was, indeed, HIV-positive. From here, Lyndal began her stigmatised life – people assumed she was a ‘lady of the night’, junkie, and more than anything, a danger to their health and safety.

‘‘

Nobody goes out to get sick – why can’t we just be more understanding? No matter what your illness, why can’t we just be kind?” People treated her like a leper – they targeted her children, pointed to her in cafes, she had rubbish thrown in her yard, and denied access to insurance – simply due to a doctor’s mistake. Lyndal was the only person to contract HIV because doctors were on strike at the Blacktown District Hospital.

“The young doctor who gave it to me – I don’t blame him for one minute, he was just doing his job, I was just the consequence of the doctors going on strike. He was just doing his best,” Lyndal says. “My son, when he used to walk home from school, the kids would spit on him, and the same with my daughter, she was taunted, and I thought going public was going to help people, but never did I think it would affect my children. “With all due respect to the Government, I think they’re failing the Australian people – especially the young people – because when I tell people things like my story, what is the Government doing about it? There’s no ads. When the Grim Reaper (ad) was out, not even 200 people got it from blood transfusions, but that ad put so many people against HIV, so there was stigma from the word go. It’s not the disease that’s the worry, it’s the stigma. That’s what will ruin your life.” According to the Australian Federation

www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

feature | style

of AIDS Organisations, there were 25,313 HIV-positive people in Australia at the end of 2015. “I want the Australian public to take care. With every activity, there’s consequences.” Take Sydney woman Abby Landy, who was diagnosed with HIV at 23-years-of-age after receiving a text message from a former lover saying, “I hope you remember me forever”. The legal assistant broke out in cold sores and was physically ill. Her doctor told her the chances of her contracting HIV were ‘slim’ due to her being a heterosexual female in Australia. She was sent home with some anti-virals for the cold sores. Abby researched on her computer and discovered that the virus could be replicating in her blood. She had a sexual health test and insisted on a HIV screen, and soon enough, she was diagnosed as HIV-positive. Abby is now 28-years-old. “All young people are handsome, gorgeous, I don’t care who they are – it’s the age of ‘nothing’s going to happen to me’ – invincible – but they need to say, I care about myself, and the children I might have,” Lyndal says. Lyndal was a single mum at the time she was diagnosed with HIV. “People say to me, why don’t you get into another relationship? Oh, my goodness, I so would love to. Everybody

www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

needs to be cuddled, everybody needs to be loved, and at this age it would be so nice to have someone to love. There are a couple of people who I have been so attracted to, but what puts me right off, is if I told them, they would go.” Entrenched in Lyndal’s hope is the need for people to take care. “People have cancer, multiple sclerosis, all these other diseases, and everybody has a sympathetic or empathetic understanding – why can’t it be the same for HIV? Irrespective of how you got it. Okay, if you were a young man and you were involved with intravenous drugs, that was a mistake – it shouldn’t follow you for the rest of your life. “For the gay and straight men and girls, they need to know that it’s here, and it’s prevalent, because there’s going to be such a stigma. I think it’s irresponsible of the Government and the medical profession for not getting out there, waving banners – be careful young ones. The older ones should know better but the younger ones think they’re

invincible and they’ll try anything. But stop, because it’ll affect the rest of your life. Sure, you can take tablets and anti-virals, but the stigma is still there. Irrespective of whether you tell people or not, when you go to hospital, you most certainly feel it.” Lyndal finds the biggest issue is the lack of understanding about HIV – and when people lack knowledge, ignorance and fear become abundant. “You can’t get it from knowing me, from hugging me – I’ve had people put their arms up when I’ve gone to hug them – you can’t get it by kissing.” Advocacy and understanding for HIV is at the top of Lyndal’s list, and that it shouldn’t be swept under the rug. “I want the Government to start telling people that it’s still here, and I want to tell the young men and young women, be careful,” Lyndal said. “Intimacy is lovely, but it’s not worth being affected for the rest of your life. “I’ve lived this long because I love what I do and I have a purpose.” “Cheerleading keeps me going.” Lyndal Johns is an all-star. She has survived what many could not fathom, and is now prepared to help others. In cohesion with advocacy, better health and awareness, her main message rings true: “People just need to care more, especially about themselves. Be more selective when it comes to intimacy.”

Breaking the

cycle BY JESSICA KRAMER

TWO MUMS MEET IN A GYM TRAINING FOR MARATHONS, FORGE A FRIENDSHIP AND RIDE FOR RURAL HEALTH

W

hile many a person may say they’d go to the ends of the earth for their friends, would you cycle over 400km with them? It sounds like an amazing feat, yet this is exactly what mums Keely Mancini and Rebecca East were inspired to do last December. “We attended a fundraiser last December out at Meandarra [about three hours west of Toowoomba] for the Heart of Australia,” Keely explains. “We listened to Dr Rolf Gomes speak and were inspired by his passion and determination to get the Heart Bus on the road. “Things he said just resonated with us – we both have friends and family living in the country and the service of the Heart Bus made so much sense.” The five-hour drive home found these two women excitedly making plans for a massive cycling journey to raise funds for heart health in rural areas. Late August found over 30 women ready to spend three days riding 415km from Brisbane to Meandarra, including a climb of over 3000 metres over the Range. But why cycling? “We love it, and we also wanted to focus on our community,” Keely says. “Over the years many women have commented to both of us at different times how great it is that we participate in races and do all of this training and physical activity, so we wanted to be able

‘‘

The camaraderie and support between all the riders was exceptional - it was so much more than we ever imagined it would be and everything that we had hoped for.”

to bring these things together. “Over the years we have formed some great friendships so, as well as the racing aspect, there is a very strong social aspect for both of us with cycling.” Keely and Bec have as much a sport-related background to their friendship as they do a family-related one. “We met in 2010 at our local gym, where we were both training for a marathon in different cities,” Keely recalls. “We started running together with another group of marathon runners. “Running drew us together but we also have children of the same age and our youngest attended the same kindy, so we started seeing each other more regularly.” Sadly, good family friends of Keely and Bec lost a mate, Graeme Bridle, suddenly to unexpected heart failure last year. To support their grieving and shocked friends, the mums went out to the rural property of Uralla in Meandarra, and attended the fundraiser event held in

KEELY MANCINI

memory of Graeme. It was here the ladies learnt that if Graeme had been able to get a check-up, his heart condition would have been found and he may still have been here today. And so, Girls Got Heart was born – and from that, the cycling event, the Heart of Uralla. “When we arrived home from Meandarra last December, the first people we spoke to were our husbands,” Keely remembers. “We have had a few crazy ideas in the past which they roll their eyes at, but this time they both instantly thought the ride was a good idea.” It was this support that gave Keely and Bec the motivation they needed to keep going with the plan. “Throughout the last eight months they have had to pick up the pieces at home with the kids and everything else, as we have worked to pull it all together,” Keely says. Keely’s husband Andrew originally comes from Longreach, so had a very real

understanding of life in the country and how hard it can be to get to health specialists. “With family still living in rural Queensland, there is a very invested interest in Girls Got Heart, and we have had huge support from the Longreach community.” As well as aiming to raise $55,000 for heart health in rural communities, Bec and Keely wanted to show other ladies that it was possible to achieve the cycling goal by following a simple but consistent training program and by having the support of a group. “This is one reason why we chose to be a women-only event,” Keely says. “Women can often put themselves last and feel a sense of guilt when taking up too much time for themselves, [but] focusing on a good cause and raising money for something so important makes it easier.” Not only did every one of the riders finish, but Girls Got Heart has been able to raise $119,000 for heart health. “There are so many stories and feel good moments that it’s hard to pick, but a couple of standouts would be seeing one of the girls who had not ridden further than 40kms before March this year climb the Range, still smiling like she had done through every training session with the most positive attitude,”

www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

Keely says. “Another wonderful part of the ride was to see one of the girls who was initially concerned about the challenges of a three-day event relax more and more each kilometre travelled. “She was as strong as an ox with an attitude to match, and it was great to see how far she had come in training, and how much she enjoyed it.” There would be a million more stories to tell, but overall Keely and Bec are over the moon. “The camaraderie and support between all the riders was exceptional – it was so much more than we ever imagined it would be and everything that we had hoped for.”

THE RACE THAT STOPS A NATION BRINGING TOGETHER ALL THE GLITZ AND GLAMOUR, POMP AND CEREMONY

I

t might be the ‘race that stops the nation’, but the Melbourne Cup is so much more than just another Group 1 horse-racing event. When you include the whole carnival (Derby, Oaks and Stakes days), it’s a four-day celebration of food, wine and fashion – bringing together all the glitz and glamour, pomp and ceremony that has made this time of year such a special one on the racing calendar.

More than 100,000 racegoers will flock to Flemington this year to see what surprises, dramas and even fairytales will unfold in this 3200m thriller, while countless millions more will attend private functions or stand glued to the TV in their homes and offices. This year, the Cup will be run on Tuesday, November 7 at 3pm (EDST). What have you got planned?

DID YOU KNOW?

◆ The first Melbourne Cup was held in 1861 and was won by Archer. ◆ Only five horses have won more than one Cup. Apart from Makybe Diva (three), they were Archer (1861 and 1862), Peter Pan (1932 and 1934), Rain Lover (1968 and 1969) and Think Big (1974 and 1975). ◆ Fashions on the field was first held in 1962.

DITCH THE DOUBLE CHIN

ARE YOUR CREDIT CARDS MAXED-OUT?

A double chin occurs when a layer of fat forms below your chin. Although a double chin is often associated with weight gain, it may be due to genetics or aging. Fortunately there are several options to create a more defined jawline and youthful profile. Liposculpture — less invasive than liposuction — uses micro-cannulas to remove fat and contour the skin. In most cases, a local anaesthetic is all that is needed during this procedure. Lipolysis eliminates fat cells using non-invasive freezing, radiofrequency or laser. One treatment or a series of treatments may be needed to obtain optimal results. Mesotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that delivers small amounts of fat-dissolving compounds through a series of injections. Belkyra has been approved by the TGA for the treatment of chin fat. Once destroyed, the fat cells can no longer store or accumulate fat and therefore no further treatment is necessary once you achieve your desired look. However, these modalities only treat fat — they don’t remove excess skin or increase skin elasticity. Skin tightening with ultrasound is a non-invasive treatment that targets specific depths of skin, causing an instant contraction and lift. The stimulation of new collagen formation also occurs. Call 4639 1250 or come and see The Bradford Clinic at suite 2, Clifford Place, 25 Isabel St, to discuss your treatments.

Benja Harney

SCOOP Style Magazine chats to globally renowned paper engineer Benja Harney while he visits Toowoomba How did you discover your passion for paper? During my course in graphic design we had a very rudimentary class in paper construction and I was pretty much hooked on paper straight away. I was excited by the idea that tangible objects could form part of the new emerging design language at that time. Have you got any accreditations or are you purely self-taught? I am an accredited graphic designer but you can’t really study paper engineering at college so I realised that if I was to make this my career, I would have to teach myself. I set about learning as much as I could and took every opportunity I had to further my skills. My studies in graphic design gave me a solid base to start from.

What is it that you enjoy most about your job? I enjoy the creative aspect of it. No two jobs are ever the same. There is a large amount of problem solving in what we do too so I try and approach each new project from a different angle. What is your most essential tool for your work? Creativity, drive, curiosity, determination! What is your favourite project? I have been lucky enough to work with some of the biggest companies around the globe. My biggest highlight to date would have to be creating the graphics for last year’s New Year’s Eve celebration for Sydney. FRESH IS BEST BY MORAG GREALY, FASHION COLUMNIST

Fascinators are traditional faves for the races but fresh floral headpieces can wow

W

hen it comes to race wear, fascinators have always been, well … very fascinating to me. I think it might be the fact that the chances of them going wrong are usually a lot higher than them going right. While there’s no doubt that racing screams a chance to don a headpiece like no other event out there, it’s always good to think of the best way to execute it. In my opinion, this season may be calling to ditch the traditional fascinators and head to the florist for a fresh floral headpiece arrangement.

After all, what better way to nod to the ‘spring’ racing carnival than with a celebration of the blooming spring produce? Other pluses include: emanating a stunning natural fragrance and embracing the natural world around us which, let’s face it, can often be overlooked by humanity. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting a basic flower crown that is normally reserved for clogging up Instagram feeds but a slightly more

creative take on fleurs on the head. There’s a multitude of places to look for inspiration, as plenty of fashion brands have been repping this exact idea of late. Take a look at the Rodarte SS18 runway show or the Dolce & Gabbana campaign in Capri (pictured) or even Mediterranean jewellery brand Keef Palas (keefpalas.com), which sells dried flower earrings. You simply can’t go past Frida Kahlo’s take on floral headpieces – she’s seriously the OG of the look.

WHERE DO OUR FASHION ICONS COME FROM?

I

t’s one of the world’s most iconic fashion houses and now, one of the millennial generation’s most coveted labels. Dior has been the subject of a social media-led resurgence lately, fuelled by celebs like Rihanna, JLaw, Bella Hadid and Miranda Kerr, who have worn designs by the brand’s new creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri. The French fashion house’s “we should all be feminists” t-shirt, for instance, was a wearable statement against sexism and inequality earlier this year, inspired by novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Under Chiuri’s direction, Dior has been given a feminist voice in what can often be a vapid, one-dimensional industry. “There is some argument that people’s beliefs are political and so they prefer not to speak about them,” Chiuri, 53, told UK Elle. “But if you have a point of view I think you are political in some way, everything is political now.” Chiuri, who has worked for Fendi and Valentino, is influenced by the “millennial generation”, including her 22-year-old daughter. “I think they are very inspiring for me, because they have another point of view about life,” Chiuri said.

SPRING FASHION SEASON TRENDS BY BELLA ROSE

S

pring is here, which means it’s time for some fresh and fabulous spring fashion. The trending styles this season are bright and bold, stripes are back with more verve, feminine florals, shades of blue, bright neons and fabulous frills. When it comes to colours, fuchsia, scarlet, magenta, and just about any other tone of warm pink and purple as well as shades of blue and pastel colours, are all trending. This spring is the season to show your true colours and express yourself through what you wear. According to glamour.com this

EMBRACE FEMININITY ON YOUR TERMS spring’s most important trend is to ‘embrace femininity on your own terms’. This means fashion’s new take on shameless feminine clothes are commanding, comfortable and very cool. From jacquard florals with ruffles to floral suits with raw hems paired with a pair of striped shoes, there is nothing standard about this spring’s fashion. Mix and match is the way to go – it does sound daunting, but don’t be afraid.

A strict colour palette will assist when mixing and matching but if that doesn’t work for you, try to accessorise to the max. Keeping things casual, layer up – a sheer slip or shirt dress over a pair of your favourite jeans and a top. When it comes to shoes, emphasis on the ankle. This means anything from little heel with ruffles to a little ballet flat with buckles. Take your basic jeans and top outfit to a whole new level by adding some bright coloured satin-style heels. Instantly lifting your mood, ranging from low-key orange flats to super feminine pink heels, the brightly coloured shoes are a big winner for this spring’s fashion. Accessorise with the season’s best shades of blue, from light sky blue to dark denim blue, a little blue shoulder bag to go with your new spring outfit, or some little blue earrings. With such a colourful and bright fashion season, it is important to know how to accessorise properly, and a pair of neutral coloured shoes works best with a very bright dress.

Allergy season hits many Australians hard, knocking them over with symptoms such as a runny nose, watery or itchy eyes and constant sneezing. If you’re a sufferer, now is the time to start prepping your body for what lies ahead. Here, some simple and effective tools to start working with today. A salt (or saline) solution is one of the most common treatments for a blocked, runny rose thanks to its ability to clear congestion, remove allergens and help break down mucus blocking the nasal cavity - all side-effects of allergies. Go for a simple saline spray or try a Neti Pot, a nasal irrigation device that uses a salt-based liquid to flush out allergens, clear the nasal passages and help prevent the onset of sinusitis. One word of advice: clean your neti pot with vinegar and hot water after every use to avoid bacteria and mold entering your nose.

2. EMBRACE ESSENTIAL OILS

Ward away allergies with a blend of peppermint, lemon and lavender essential oils. This magical combination is known to work as a natural antihistamine by reducing your body’s inflammation response to allergens. Mix them together in a diffuser, or if you’re out and about, add a few drops to a handkerchief and wave it under your nose every few hours to keep allergies in check.

3. KNOW YOUR TRIGGERS

Knowing what sets off your allergies is one of the best ways to manage them, so paying close attention is key. Start looking for patterns when symptoms arise, assessing everything from location, time of day and factors such as household dust or pets nearby. Once you learn your triggers you can work towards avoiding them, or prepping ahead with antihistamines and essentials oils before exposure takes place to reduce or eliminate symptoms entirely.

health plus?

4. PREP WITH PROBIOTICS

While external factors such as pollen and pet hair are known allergens, did you know your body can have a high histamine count from internal factors as well? Here’s how: your gut houses around 75 per cent of your immune system, but when it’s out of whack, your digestive flora is too, leaving you vulnerable to allergies and allergy symptoms. Probiotics help balance that by bringing your digestive system back into balance, reducing your histamine count and settling your immune responses right down. If you know you’re a target for seasonal allergies, start taking a good quality probiotic well before allergy season hits.

5. START ON SUPPLEMENTS

It’s not just probiotics that work wonders on allergies, other supplements such as glutamine, zinc, curcumin, fish oil, quercetin and nettles do too. All linked to assisting in gut health and reducing inflammation in the body, these supplements are serious contenders when it comes to preventing allergy symptoms from taking hold. Just remember to always see your doctor before embarking on a new supplement program to make sure they’re right for you. 6543696ah

TIMELESS BEAUTY TRENDS BY LIBBY BUTLER

A

s the decades come and go, so do beauty trends. However, as the years have passed, a select few of these ‘trends’ have proved themselves to be timeless. Minimalism The practicality and simplicity of minimalist fashion is what has made this trend stick throughout the years. The bold colours paired with streamlined silhouettes first made an

appearance in the 60s, and nowadays can be found in both casual and office wear. The single colour cami top is a staple casual piece in most closets these days, and this timeless trend reaches modern office wear in soft, single-coloured suits. Florals Flowers were first worn by people in ancient Greek and Egyptian times,

being woven together to make crowns or garlands (which we still do today). With inspiration for floral clothing coming from literally all around the world, it’s really no surprise that the design is constantly being revived. The feminine, nature-inspired pattern has had a surge in popularity this year, just in time for spring. Floral printed tops, pants or dresses can be found in nearly every store, in designs which range from casual to formal. Ladylike The tight-waisted, full skirt first captivated women’s fashion in the 1940s with the release of French designer Christian Dior’s clothing lines. The timeless ladylike look is effortlessly feminine with a flattering shape that embraces women’s curves. This trend has held its place for decades in the world of fashion, and is now most commonly seen in office and evening outfits. The blouse/skirt combo is an easy go to for a professional, yet ladylike, work outfit, however it can be equally glamorous for evening wear with the addition of a wrap shirt and complementing jewellery.

THE LAZY GIRL’S GUIDE TO BEAUTY

YOU TOO CAN LEARN TO BE LAZY – ONE LAIDBACK STEP AT A TIME

W

ant to look good, with the least amount of effort? Welcome to the lazy girl’s guide to looking and feeling incredible, fast. Personally, I have no problem with the word “lazy”. I’m very proud to say that I’m the laziest beauty editor in Australia. I’d much rather be bringing you the most exciting beauty news and trends, than spending hours applying make-up. You can be glamorous and lazy at the same time Lazy girls come in all shapes, sizes and

colours. And it doesn’t necessarily mean a no-make-up look. Dita Von Teese, the ultra-glam burlesque artist, swears by wearing just red lipstick and huge sunglasses on her days off. Boom: instant glamour. Lazy hair is the best hair Of course, there are women whose low-key style personifies the “lazy girl” aesthetic. “I’ve never pursued the idea of perfect beauty,” Lara Worthington declared to Harper’s Bazaar. Her choppy bob is the ultimate in easy chic. She swears by

spritzing sea salt into towel-dried, non-conditioned hair to achieve that lived-in look. Pillowy-soft skin, just like a bed... A lazy girl knows how to make a beauty trend work in her favour – take the latest craze for all-over highlighting (or ‘strobing’) for example. A similar (and more natural) effect can be achieved by applying a nourishing face oil such as Go To’s Face Hero. Happy skin, happy face. When in doubt, use a stencil... on your brows Remember when you were too lazy to do bubble writing on your primary school projects, so you’d reach for an alphabet stencil instead? Guess what – similar stencils exist for your eyebrows. And they actually work, unlike most eyebrow gadgets out there. The e.l.f. Eyebrow Stencil Kit is a ridiculous steal at only $3. Make-up for eyes in one, lazy step When eye make-up seems too hard, grab some glasses to frame your eyes. Or, wear them because you can’t see, like me. When I can be bothered with mascara, I like to very gently press the wand against the base of my eyelashes, to create a “tightlined” (i.e. between the eyelashes) eyeliner effect.

SPRING SUN SAFETY BY LIBBY BUTLER

Hats have never been so on trend, so make a style statement and avoid the rays

W

ith the turn of the season comes the much-anticipated warmer weather of spring. However, as most of us will want to soak up the sun for the rest of the year, we all need to be mindful that the sun isn’t soaking us up. Sun safety is an essential part of maintaining our overall health, however there is one important step in the sun safety routine which is often overlooked — especially by the fashion-conscious. Wearing a hat could make the difference between you getting the most out of the sun this year, and the sun getting the most out of you. Wearing a hat is a vital step in the sun safety routine.

They protect your scalp, face and neck from exposure to harmful ultraviolet rays. While hats have long held the reputation of having the sole purpose of ruining summer hairstyles, they do play an important role in minimising the risk of getting burnt on sensitive skin areas like your hairline, cheeks, neck or ears — sunscreen can’t protect these areas all by itself. Besides the short-term consequences of not wearing a hat, overexposure to sun-rays can lead to skin cancers forming on these areas.

These skin cancers will most likely have to be removed surgically or frozen off, both of which leave scars. If these cancers are left too long, they would either have to be treated with radiation, which leads to hair loss in the affected area, or chemotherapy, which causes hair loss all over. Surely having hat hair is worth the struggle if it means we get to keep our much-cherished locks — besides, being healthy is always on trend!

TONE UP YOUR WHOLE BODY BY TIFF HALL, FOUNDER OF TIFFXO.COM

S

ometimes when I chat to my ninjas and ask them what their fitness goals are, a pretty common answer is “I want to tone up”. Getting toned is a mix of building muscle and decreasing your body fat percentage and you need to boost up muscle to get those nice toned shapes. There’s more to it then looking good you know, exercise makes you feel amazing as well! I like tabata for this reason. It’s a kind

of training where you work out for 20 seconds, then rest for 10 seconds, repeating eight times for four minutes. By speeding up our metabolism and decreasing our body fat, we increase our lean muscle mass as we turn it into fat fighting lean and green machines. When training in tabata regularly, your metabolism speeds up permanently. Your clever body will replace fat with lean muscle and muscles are little fat

furnaces that burn calories all day long, even when you’re not working out. Try every exercise for 20 seconds with a 10-second rest for four minutes duration. Just remember, there’s always a rest around the corner! Speedbag: With both of your hands make a fist. Raise your fists in the air so that your arms are at a 45-degree angle. Your hands should travel in small circles continuously rotating in the air as you mimic hitting a speed bag. Start off slow to get your rhythm and build to higher intensity until those hands are flying so fast they’re a blur. V snap: Begin by lying out stretched on the floor. Brace your core and make sure that your back is flat on floor by pushing your belly button down to your spine. At the same time raise your arms and legs and sit up into a V position as you aim to touch your toes. Curtsy squat: Start from a standing position and step your right leg behind you to the left so that your thighs cross over, bending both knees as if you were curtsying. You will feel it working the outside and inner thigh as well as your calf and butt. Sink low so your knees are as close as you can get them to the ground.

A HEALTHY DOSE BY ELSPETH HASWELL-SMITH, HEALTH COACH AND COUNSELLOR

A

s we head into the racing season and enjoy spring festivities, we find that our alcohol consumption increases. It is important to understand the relationship alcohol has on our microbiome. Our microbiome plays a large role in our immune function and health, therefore ensure you are enjoying alcoholic beverages that are not compromising your health. Alcohol impacts our gut microbiome and alters the bacteria we harbour, in addition adding to gut permeability issues such as Leaky Gut Syndrome. Once we have a compromised gut wall our protection from toxins, food proteins and unfriendly bacteria can enter the bloodstream, causing inflammatory

health issues, and increase toxicity in the body. Studies suggest that a high consumption of alcohol changes the composition of the gut microbiome. An altered gut flora can influence our mental health, resulting in anxiety and depression due to the interference with the brain’s communication pathway, the vagus nerve. However, studies have also suggested that a reduction in alcohol consumption is a positive strategy to alter the environment of the gut to enhance good bacteria to thrive. The best option for alcohol is a good glass of red wine, preferably organic that is preservative free!

A DIFFERENT LOOK AT DIETING LifeShape Clinic dietitian Nicola Moore shares her simple tips to look and feel great for your next big event. If you have a special occasion coming up, it’s perfectly normal to want to shed a little extra weight to feel more confident on the day. However there’s no need to resort to crash diets when subtle, daily changes to your nutrition and physical activity will get you results. The simplest way to improve your nutrition in the lead up to a big event is to eliminate your discretionary calories. “This includes milky coffees, juice, soda, and the extra glasses of wine, and decreasing your meat by ¼ at each meal,” Nicola explains. “Replace these with water, herbal tea and bulk your meals up with

non-starchy vegetables or salad.” Next, increase your physical activity by just 10 minutes more a day. “Being more active doesn’t have to mean slogging it out at the gym,” Nicola says. “Some fun ways to fit in extra physical activity include gardening, playing in the backyard with the kids, or walking them to school.” The key to weight management is ensuring consistent, positive behaviours even when an event isn’t coming up.

“The goal of our LifeShape programs is to encourage our clients to live a life of balance year round,” Nicola says. “Simply making an effort to introduce daily, healthy habits is huge step in the right direction towards a more confident, healthy you.” Visit LifeShape Clinic at Medici Medical Centre, Suite 103, Level 1, on the corner of Scott and Curzon streets. Floral Crown

Make a colourful floral statement this season by creating your very own spring fashion accessory.

YOU WILL NEED

Floral wire Floral tape Wire cutters Leafy greens (real or artificial) Flowers (real or artificial)

STEP 1

Begin by measuring the crown by wrapping the floral wire twice around the circumference of your head. Once you are satisfied with how the crown is sitting, remove crown and cut off any excess wire.

STEP 2

Secure the two layers of wire together by wrapping them tightly using floral tape.

STEP 4

You first want to create a base by arranging the leafy greens evenly around the crown. Once you are satisfied with the placement secure these leaves to the crown using floral tape.

STEP 5

Prepare your flowers by stripping leaves and trimming the flower stems to approximately 2-3 inches. Similar to the leafy greens, arrange your flowers evening around the crown until you are happy with your pattern. To secure flowers, start at the front of the crown and position the stems along the hoop facing toward the back. Secure each flower with floral tape. Continue this process around the crown until you are finished.

NEW HOPE AND HEART CARE Cardiac service coming for St Vincent’s Private Hospital

S

t Vincent’s Private Hospital Toowoomba and Brisbane-based cardiology practice HeartCare Partners, part of the GenesisCare network, have finalised a joint venture agreement that will deliver a comprehensive interventional cardiology service to Toowoomba and the Darling Downs. Hospital chief executive officer Kathryn McKeefry said the new cardiology service, which will be phased in from early 2018, is an exciting addition to the hospital’s services. “HeartCare Partners is one of Queensland’s largest private providers of cardiac care,” Ms McKeefry said. “They provide a comprehensive service that includes a large range of interventional procedures performed by renowned clinicians,” she said. “The St Vincent’s service will commence with diagnostic angiography and will build up to include interventional services supported by on-site interventional cardiologists based in Toowoomba at St Vincent’s.” The hospital already has the region’s only private 24-hour emergency centre to accept cardiac emergencies at any time of the day. In the past, these patients have had to be transferred to another facility for invasive assessment and treatment.

“With the introduction of our new service, we will be able to admit these patients for full cardiac investigation thus saving vital time in arriving at a diagnosis and commencing the appropriate treatment,” Ms McKeefry said. HeartCare Partners cardiologist and Clinical Management Committee Chair Dr David Cross said, once in full swing, the comprehensive on-site services will provide patients in the region with greater access to highly specialised interventional cardiologists. “Timing is critical in heart care, so we are very pleased to be bringing a new on-site diagnostic angiography service to benefit patients at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Toowoomba,” Dr Cross said. “In the future, my highly specialised interventional colleagues will also perform intricate procedures such as the insertion of pacemakers and stents,” he said. “It is terrific to be working with St Vincent’s to extend our high quality care in Toowoomba and the Darling Downs, and we look forward to a long partnership.” Essential to the delivery of the invasive service is the installation of a

hybrid theatre, which has been built as part of the $30-million Clive Berghofer Theatre Suites, and a soon to be created 16-bed cardiac ward. Ms McKeefry said the hybrid theatre will be equipped with a state-of-the-art Philips Azurion 7 C20 FlexMove Hybrid lab, the first of its kind in Australia and New Zealand. “The installation features a unique Integrated Cath Lab Workflow and ClarityIQ Technology that has been developed, over a number of years, in close collaboration with clinical partners,” Ms McKeefry said. “The system provides an enhanced user experience for the cardiologist by delivering a seamless flow of information through the lab, from the HeamoDynamics to Interventional Lab and finally image reviewing, reporting and archiving,” she said. “This level of system integration leads to faster more accurate patient outcomes. “The new system also has benefits for patients and staff.” Ms McKeefry said the ClarityIQ produces exceptional image quality with radiation dose levels far below the industry standard.

WHAT TO WEAR AND WHERE TO GET IT BY BELLA ROSE

The Melbourne Cup is fast approaching, and the most important thing is to have fun.

M

elbourne Cup time means you need the right outfit — one that looks fabulous yet is comfortable, so once you have your outfit on, you can forget about it and enjoy the day! As always, the fashion is one of the major elements and attractions of the races, so it is important to dress to impress and have fun choosing what to wear. In terms of season’s trends, expect to see fringing, leather, bold colours and feminine florals. YOUR OUTFIT FOR THE RACES A hat is a must, fascinator or headpiece, SHOULD REFLECT THE FACT it’s not a race outfit without one. THAT IT IS SPRING AND IS A Choose your footwear wisely. RADIANT TIME OF YEAR As you will be on your feet all day, wear shoes that you know you can go the distance in. Bright shoes are trending this spring so keep an eye out for some vibrant ones,

but make sure they’re also comfortable. Accessorise to the max, and if you can’t find accessories to match your outfit, go for blacks and metallics as they are very ‘in’ this season. If you are looking for a dress/outfit that is feminine and flowy, boutiques in town such NB Style and Sybil’s have some wonderful options. If you are looking for a dress that is feminine but slightly more structured, try some of the Grand Central stores, such as Ally or Blue Illusions, as well. There is also a wide variety of superb men’s fashion to choose from at Peter Jackson and Oxford. These local stores have some of Toowoomba’s best event fashion. So enjoy dressing up and looking fabulous, but choose wisely so that you will be comfortable all day long.

How long have you got? Is it a frantic power lunch in the boardroom or do you have the afternoon at leisure? Melbourne Cup lunches are about having fun, so try to make the most of the day. The race is at 2pm, so chances are you’ll be hosting a lunch of some sort before the big race.

CATERING:

You don’t have to compete with the Emirates marquee, but you do want to provide a little more than chips and cheerios. Break out a medley of cheeses, seasonal fruit and crackers and supplement the mini-banquet with a number of tasty hors d’oeuvres. If putting together a great spread is a little daunting, then why not let a catering firm supply a number of hampers? It can still provide a touch of elegance without the steep price tag of silver service. As long as you have plenty of beer and champagne on ice your guests will

have just as much fun as being trackside.

FASHION PARADE:

After all, girls, it’s totally about the fashion. Chances are your guests have gone to a lot of trouble picking the perfect outfit and accessories. And no doubt there will be a wonderful collection of racing couture and fascinators on display. So don’t miss the opportunity to get out on that catwalk and take a twirl. Looking your best for Cup Day is mandatory, so why not give your guests a chance to show off their new outfits with a fun parade?

THEME:

It’s the Melbourne Cup… we understand that, so while you might think you’re limited in your choice it’s actually the opposite. A Cup party lets you break out the colour. And lots of it. Throughout the day, you’ll see every colour of the rainbow mirrored in the jockeys’ silks, so there are no rules when it comes to decorating your party area. The bolder the better. Want a classier appeal – then stick

to your traditional black and whites. The only rule is to have fun and make the party area a visual sensation.

SWEEPS:

A must! Get selling on the Monday – or, at the very least, early Tuesday morning – because everyone loves the idea of drawing one of the favourites (or bagging friends who get stuck with the donkeys). Even the punting rookies will be keen to grab a horse or two as it gives them a mount to cheer through the race.

TELEVISION:

You probably don’t have to be told Channel Seven will once again be covering the Cup, but what will you be showing it on? If your TV is wall-mounted where everyone will have a good vantage point or should you look at setting up a second television for the day? Either way, make sure you have them turned up loud because nothing gets noisier than a pumped-up racing crowd.

RANGE ROVER VELAR PRICE $70,662-$168,862 WARRANTY 3 years/100,000km SAFETY Not rated, 6 airbags, auto emergency braking, lane-departure warning FUEL From 5.4L/100km to 9.4L/100km

BY CRAIG DUFF

T

he arrival of the Range Rover Evoque in 2011 signalled a new design direction for the Range Rover brand, which inspired the creation of the Velar. The brand that built its reputation on boxy but luxurious SUVs with serious off-road capability switched the focus to a sleek, slick city vehicle that could easily venture down a bush road if required. More than 600,000 Evoque sales later, Range Rover is growing the “urban SUV” concept with a fourth model, the Velar, which sits between the Evoque and Range Rover Sport.

There are 50 Velar variations to choose from, ranging in price from $70,662 for the base 2.0-litre petrol turbo to $168,862 for the supercharged V6 First Edition version. Choose from four trim levels for each of the six engines (three diesel, three petrol). Finally, the six-cylinder diesel and petrol engines can be ordered in First Edition guise, which is a Velar “with the lot”. The price grows accordingly to $168,250 for the oil burner and $168,862 for the V6 petrol. Being competent on the tarmac and capable on rutted fire trails is the

Velar’s party trick. The car is theatre quiet at freeway speeds, especially on the 20-inch rims standard on the four-cylinder models. The steering is impressively direct and quick to respond to inputs. The engine choice determines whether progress is moderate or meaningful. The supercharged V6 petrol is predictably quick off the mark; the turbo six-cylinder diesel isn’t as fast initially but cruises effortlessly up any incline. This car will traverse trails that most sane owners will never contemplate in their prestige wagon and it does it in a typically unflustered Rangie fashion.

NEW RANGE ROVER VELAR

WHEREVER YOU GO, EYES WILL FOLLOW.

COMPELLING DESIGN

Simplicity that exudes confidence and individuality. Range Rover Velar leads the way in progressive design. Clean, elegant and distinctive, the vehicle has a striking contemporary presence. The sleek volumes of the lower body, with its flawlessly integrated deployable flush door handles, bear witness to Range Rover’s obsession with the finest detail.

LIVING IT UP WITH YOUR INTERIOR T

TIME FOR A MAJOR LIVING ROOM MAKEOVER? START WITH A STATEMENT SOFA

he living room is where we spend most of our time, and it’s certainly the room our visitors see the most of — so it’s important the space is both functional and stylish. New interior design trends are starting to emerge: think warmer colour palettes with earthy tones, layering natural materials and textures, and softer furniture shapes. Before you start searching “lounge room ideas Australia” and getting totally overwhelmed, it’s important to go back to basics and ask yourself how the space is going to be used, as your design decisions and decorative choices will be influenced by the use of the room. Curvy, plump shapes are growing in popularity for sofas and occasional chairs, and their sculptural form is a great way to begin modernising your space. Velvet and velour are here to stay, so if you’re only making minor decorative

updates to your lounge room, try adding velvet with cushions in an earthy colour palette, or even a velvet ottoman or armchair.

LIVING ROOM WALL IDEAS TO TRANSFORM YOUR INTERIOR

Mirrors are regularly used for living room wall decor as they add light and ambiance, as well as creating the illusion of more space — especially if placed on the opposite side of the room to a window. If you’re thinking of trying out something bold but are worried about the cost (or even changing your mind), try removable wallpaper. Easy to install and remove (as the name suggests), removable wallpaper is becoming more popular and is a super practical and affordable way to decorate your living room walls. The best bit? It’s not permanent, which is great if you’re renting.

EMBRACE SPRING INSIDE YOUR HOME KEEP YOUR HOME LOOKING COLOURFUL AND EXPERIMENT WITH MIXED PATTERNS

BY BELLA ROSE

T

his season’s top trends for interior design come down to three main characteristics: colourful, fun and textured, with a clean finish. When it comes to the colour of your walls, go for green – shades from dark green to cherry green. Greenery represents refreshment and revitalisation – something we could all use in our current complex social and

political environment – and is the key to 2017’s trending home decor. In addition, decorate with butterflies. The perfect symbol for your new spring home decor, butterflies create a sense of a warm, welcoming home, as well as symbolising grace and optimism. Butterflies can be celebrated in a variety of spaces, displaying soft but

sophisticated accents throughout your home. Flowers are a necessity to have in your home during this time of year, as they brighten up the room and your mood. Keep your home looking colourful and experiment with mixed patterns. Material manipulation, such as pleating and folding in velvets and cottons, is making a comeback.

WHEN FAMILY IS FOREVER This beautiful wedding had a unique perspective

PHOTO: MADE FOR THIS PHOTOGRAPHY

W

hen Matthew Holmes and Kate Waldron got married, they wanted the emphasis to be on those close to them. “Our wedding had a big focus on family, taking into account that everyone goes their separate ways at a certain stage in life when everyone starts having their own families,” Kate said. “My husband was very fortunate to have all four of his grandparents alive, present and well so this was very special for him. “We also wanted to make sure that the family friends who have been there throughout our upbringings were a special part of the day.”

In homage to this, Kate’s bridesmaids were her sister and two best friends, while Matthew’s included long-time friends and a brother. “We also had my dearly beloved nephews Matthew and Tyler Kirkman as ring bearers,” Kate said. While the ceremony was held at St Patrick’s Cathedral, the reception at Kingfishers Cafe allowed for a more casual atmosphere with guests able to catch up and enjoy themselves. Before becoming engaged at Christmas-time last year, Matthew and Kate had been together for four years, as well as being close friends for some time beforehand.

TAKING THE PUZZLE OUT OF CHILDCARE A

ustralian families are facing an education blowout with daycare expenses taking a hefty chunk out of the weekly household budget. Current research indicates paying more than $100 per day is standard across the country – with that figure rocketing past the $150 mark in the larger cities. And there doesn’t appear to be any relief in sight, with Treasurer Scott Morrison announcing in the May budget that any childcare fee relief (for low and middle-income earners) would be delayed until next year. It can be pretty daunting for parents of young children who are looking to re-enter the workforce. So, how does it all work? Child Care Benefit: The Child Care Benefit is an income-tested payment that reduces the cost of your total

childcare fees. It is available to you if you are a parent, foster parent or grandparent with a child in your care who is attending childcare approved for the purposes of CCB by, or registered with, the government. There are certain eligibility requirements you must meet to get CCB. Child Care Rebate: Once you are eligible for CCB, you may be eligible to also receive additional assistance through the Child Care Rebate. The CCR covers 50% of your out-of-pocket costs up to the annual

limit, regardless of your income. Currently, the CCR annual limit is $7500 per child per year. Be aware: The childcare system is changing from July 2018. As part of the changes, Child Care Benefit; Child Care Rebate; Jobs, Education and Training Child Care Fee Assistance; Grandparent Child Care Benefit; and the Special Child Care Benefit will cease at midnight on July 1, 2018. For more information about the new childcare fee assistance programs go to www.education.gov.au.

ON THE BIG SCREEN

VICTORIA AND ABDUL IS IN CINEMAS NOW

GREAT SPRING READ THE ART OF THE NATURAL HOME

This book is perfect for those interested in sustainability, natural products and mindfulness. It’s all about taking the time to create your own home-made products, from face masks to floor polish and medicinal honey to massage oil. Taking inspiration from her grandmother’s generation, Rebecca Sullivan has put together this thoughtful and appealing manual to caring for yourself and your home. Traditional methods are resurrected or updated to suit the modern home using simple, natural ingredients. This inspiring guide is a must for anyone interested in living a simpler, more purposeful life. Rebecca Sullivan’s The Art of the Natural Home is published by Simon & Schuster and is available in bookshops now. RRP $39.99.

VICTORIA AND ABDUL

A must-see movie, Victoria and Abdul is simply a delight to watch. The film focuses on the beautiful friendship that develops between the monarch and a poor young clerk who is sent from India to present Queen Victoria with a valuable coin for her Golden Jubilee. Judy Dench most certainly presents a formidable portrayal of Queen Victoria, whose stern face watches in disdain over her many servants and assistants. Abdul manages to cut through her icy exterior to find a woman who is very lonely, and brings joy back into her life by teaching her about the outside world, its beauty and languages. Ali Fazal is superb as the young clerk Abdul, bringing to the audience a gentle humour and warmth. Viewers leave the cinema feeling that they have been transported back to the days of opulence and plenty, seen through the eyes of a lowly clerk who left his mark in history.

THEATRE RHYTHMS OF IRELAND

Artist Tarn McLean chats to Style

Tell us a little about yourself... My early years were spent in Sydney as a boarder at Tara Anglican Girls’ School. While at Tara I spent more time on the sports field than in the classroom. On leaving Tara I worked at Lawson’s Fine Art Auction House at The Rocks in Sydney before heading for the outback. I met my husband Jondy at Mitchell. During our 13 years at Tullochard, a sheep and cattle property nearly 800km west of Brisbane, we raised two children and I pursued my passion for gardening, began to paint and commenced studying Fine Art through Curtin University. I studied full-time at U.S.Q. after moving to Toowoomba and in 2016 received a PhD in Visual Art (Painting). Describe your style... It is both abstract and representative. The works I exhibit in the Grammar Art

Show are based around botanicals and expanding them into textile designs. What inspires you? Making beautiful spaces using colours from the earth. When did you start painting? In 1999 when I was expecting our second child Sara Jane – we previously had a son Oscar. How has it evolved and what has in uenced this? My work evolved from painting plants from my garden, then nudes and onto landscape and botanicals. My most significant influence has been the clients who love what I do. This form of giving and receiving is so fulfilling. Why do you enjoy painting? I use painting as a tool, which enables me to reflect the world around me through colour.

What are some of the highlights/ favourite moments/greatest achievements in your artistic life? My greatest highlight is connecting with people through my art and design, and seeing them enjoy what I do. This is a constant achievement in my everyday life. What do you like about Toowoomba? As an artist I love that it’s a Garden City and full of inspiration. Its regional location secures it as a great cultural centre. This allows me to be creative and to avoid being caught up in any cultural trends. What is your dream goal or project? My dream goal is to live a life enriching the lives of others through painting and designing as well as further investigating the academic side of my Painting practice.

AMAZING TASMANIA BY JESSICA KRAMER

A

ll chatter ceases as we drive around the bend in the road. I’m rendered speechless — a rare occurrence — at my first sight of Tasmania’s capital city. The city itself isn’t particularly awe-inspiring in magnitude because of the building height restrictions in place, but this only adds to the amazing sight of the stunningly craggy Mount Wellington looming behind Hobart like a protective giant. All throughout my entire week’s visit, I find myself checking in on the mountain regularly and come to consider it as fondly as the locals do their “Mount Welly”. Being late August, there is snow on the cap most of the week — but you have

to be lucky enough to time a drive-up when the road is open to be able to see the snow and ice in person. But there is plenty of other things to do in this beautiful city, most of which is in walking distance of the majority of main hotels. Salamanca Place quickly becomes a favourite haunt of mine, where convict-built colonial buildings abound, now turned into quaint and unique shops and cafes. The waterfront is just across the road, where a few sailing ships that have been refurbished are moored. It’s easy to spend most of your holiday relaxing in a pier-side cafe, watching the ships being gently rocked by the waves. If you’re more adventurous, there are

many sights nearby. As well as history aplenty with the museum, art gallery, modern art gallery, maritime museum, and the adorable Battery Point with quaint houses and cottage gardens, Richmond and Bruny Island are close by. My favourite is a day trip foodie tour of Bruny Island. Not only do we see the famous albino wallabies, but the weather clears in time for a walk on one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen — the sand virtually untouched and the water bright blue. Between this and tasting local oysters, whisky, cheese, honey, beer, salmon and wine, I return home from this holiday very contented.

PLANNING FOR UNCERTAIN EVENTS AND THE FUTURE BY LEANNE MCDONALD, CREATE FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS

F

or many of my clients – as well as for me – uncertainty is one of the most frustrating pieces of the current economic and financial environment. Planning for retirement and other goals has become just that much more difficult. A little insight about the future sure would be welcome. Truth is, we can’t know the future. With the exception of certain undeniable forecasts, like the one about death and taxes, I cannot tell you what will happen later today, let alone what the future holds. No one can. Yet, to some degree, we long for at least a little sense of certainty to help us

make plans. That may be why it’s so easy to make assumptions about the future based on the past. So what can we do with this frustration? We can plan for the future. The planning we do is based on what we know about life, and especially, what we know about the financial world in which we live. What can’t you know? ◆ You can’t know when your life or that of a family member will be significantly changed. ◆ You can’t know what’s going to

OWN YOUR TOMORROW

happen with the overall economy. ◆ You can’t know what’s going to happen in the real estate market. ◆ You can’t know what’s going to happen to the stock market. ◆ You can’t know when your employment will be disrupted. Here are three key financial points: ◆ Recognise that you must save money, for difficult times as well as good times. ◆ Put your investments in a variety of financial instruments. ◆ Use insurance to transfer some of the risks of uncertainty to someone else.

No matter what your current situation, Create Financial Solutions can work with you and your family to plan a great future and prepare for any uncertainties life may throw at you. We have partnered with AMP, Australia’s largest financial planning network, to give you access to some of the most reliable and competitive financial products and solutions while maintaining the friendly personal attention you only get from a locally-owned and operated business. We will take the time to talk with you and listen to your goals and objectives, then we can develop a personalised plan to help you to:

GETTING YOUR CARE PLANS SORTED BY LYNN ARMSTRONG, BEST WILSON BUCKLEY

Settling arrangements in a family law matter in the children’s best interests

W

ith special occasions just around the corner (Christmas, holidays and the New Year) Parenting Plans are a way of managing these special occasions to include time with your children that is in the best interests of the children. There are two options for settling arrangements for children in a family law matter – Parenting Plans and Parenting Orders. The primary difference between a Parenting Order and a Parenting Plan, is an Order is easier to enforce in most cases.

If someone beaches an Order and the breach is significant enough, the other party is able to contravene them in court to seek remedy for the breach. This, in most cases, cannot happen for a strict agreement formalised only as a Parenting Plan. While Orders tend to remain, I believe, the first choice for most solicitors, in most cases the Parenting Plan can be of definite assistance when an unexpected

occasion raises its head, or arrangements need to be changed, or where there may be urgency in formalising arrangements. Once a Minute of Consent is signed by both parties, it will probably meet the requirements of a Parenting Plan, and may effectively be one until Orders are made. Whether you already have orders in place, or no formal agreement in writing, a Parenting Plan is often the first step.

SCENE Qi’lin Oriental Cuisine has long held a special place in the hearts of Toowoomba residents, not to mention the entirety of Queensland, as the restuarant took out its sixth consecutive win in the Restuarant and Catering Industry Association Australia Awards for Excellence this year. Its most recent menu additions boast further reasons to visit. SHA CHA BEEF WITH VEGETABLES

SWEET CHILLI CHICKEN

First on the day’s menu was the sweet chilli chicken, a fresh twist on the more traditional honey or lemon chicken. A refreshing bite of chilli is pitched against the sweet sauce of the dish, complementing the freshness of the meat and instantly compelling you to reach for more.

Deep, rich flavours of the beef are set off by owner Annette’s fresh take on traditional Chinese staple, sha cha sauce. This sauce is a fusion of iconic Chinese flavours and features a medley of vegetables, including onion, carrot, capsicum and zucchini. The next dish was the immensely popular...

SHA CHA SEAFOOD FRIED RICE

Featuring the succulent flavours of scored squid, the meaty texture of great prawns and beautifully decorated with crafted vegetable art, this dish is a signature one for the restaurant.

CHILLI SOYA BEAN LAMB WITH VEGETABLES

Tender and steeped in flavour, the lamb is set of masterfully by the sauce; a twist on the popular soya bean sauce often used in Chinese cooking. The vegetables too have absorbed the rich flavours of the dish and complement the exquisite flavour of the lamb.

QI’LIN BARBECUE PORK RIBS

A visit that includes this dish is also memorable, with a stunningly sculpted red onion lotus flower adorning a bed of feathered fennel for garnish. Mouthwateringly, the meat falls easily from the bone, slathered in a generous portion of the house barbecue sauce.

with friends you will enjoy yourself this October.

GEMINI

IT’S IN THE STARS

Jan 21 — Feb 19 Over-enthusiasm will win out every time adrenaline pumps through your veins, keeping you wound up like a coiled spring. Try skydiving or bungee jumping, or perhaps a few laps around a V8 Supercar track would get the jitters out of your system. You are most definitely not the crochet or embroidery type.

May 22 — June 22 There are great stars for Gemini this month. You are bold, endeavouring to strike out on your chosen career path, which has been a decade in the making. Every hurdle you have flown over. I see beauty being a big part of your life so if involved in the industry, plump your brushes. You will be in demand in the lead-up to the festive season. Fashion is a big feature also.

LIBRA

PISCES

CANCER

AQUARIUS

Sept 24 — Oct 23 October is taking off so be prepared for action aplenty as positive vibes surround you. It must have been all that meditation you did last month that is spreading love rainbows. When it comes to bright ideas you are totally winning.

SCORPIO

Oct 24 — Nov 22 This month it might be a struggle to get out of bed in the morning, but being one of the most determined signs in the Zodiac bodes well for you. If you want to see sheer will power and determination, try telling a Scorpio that they cannot complete a task.

SAGITTARIUS

Nov 23 — Dec 21 Outlandish behaviour will get you everywhere this month, so think outside the square when it comes to fun times. Holidays are on your mind so plan somewhere warm and tropical. Just don’t forget your insect repellent.

CAPRICORN

Dec 22 — Jan 20 Watch your step this month – it could be dangerous carrying around all heavy

Feb 20 — Mar 20 Overindulgence during the cooler months will have you now looking in the mirror groaning “Why me?’’ There is nothing you can do about it. Chocolate is one of nature’s wonder foods, just not at 3am. Maybe that could be the key to a whole new exercise routine – dangle chocolate in front of you as you walk.

ARIES

June 23 — July 23 How good does it feel to relax and let all the tension release from your body? Imagine you are floating, the waves lapping at your feet, a warm breeze blows across your face, the sun is warm – it is heaven. Now just wait for someone to do a big bomb dive in the pool next to you. Breathe; simply exit stage right with your dignity and towel intact.

LEO

Mar 21 — Apr 20 Be on the alert this October. You never know who may cross your path; it is all down to that wonderful sense of humour you have. It could be the perfect time to take up a new hobby instead of sitting around the house wishing away your life. Get out and do it Aries, you will have people flocking for your attention.

July 24 — Aug 23 Leo, you have been given a warning regarding any health problems so it is up to you to ensure these problems are taken on board and dealt with. Start a fitness campaign. You don’t need to bust a move at the gym; simply walking or swimming will get you motivated.

TAURUS

VIRGO

Apr 21 — May 21 Warm weather sends bulls into a frenzy. They love nothing more than frolicking amongst flowers, rolling around until they are quite intoxicated with their perfume. Spring is the season of indulgence which is one passion Taurus cannot ignore. Whether it is a large delicious gourmet feast or a simple meal

Aug 24 — Sept 24 Earth mother, what a year it has been. There have been some new beginnings and some classic endings. Every day holds a great deal of promise which will bring surprising new people into your life. If in need of a break get on the phone, book that flight and take to the sky and dream big. You deserve it.
