Our Awards more significant than ever before

ast year the Master Builders NSW (MBA) conducted its Excellence in Housing awards “virtually”, due to the pandemic.

I’m happy to say that 2021 saw a return to face-to-face, with the MBA’s Excellence in Housing Awards being the first live event to occur at The Star for 2021. Some 500 guests participated in a black-tie event, which for the first time was recorded for television and went to air on Channel 7two and televised nationally a week later. The televising of the Awards provides the opportunity to showcase the industry’s significant contribution to the general public. This edition of the Master Builder Magazine also showcases the winner of each category for this year’s Excellence in Housing awards. Judges inspected each site in person, over an extended period of six months due to the pandemic conditions, finally completing their work in October. It is most satisfying to report that this year, the judges particularly noted that many of the most difficult and detailed projects were undertaken by young builders — a great indicator of the health of this industry. The industry should be very proud of its achievements,

and on behalf of the Master Builders Association of NSW, I offer my congratulations to all entrants and winners. I thank the judges who freely donate their time and experience — to examine, evaluate, deliberate, and make very difficult decisions when considering all entries. I thank the sponsors who continue to support this great industry and the Awards Presentation. The online platform known as myBIG, is a platform full of reference resources for our industry. Further, this platform will host and provide subscriptions to Standards Sets which will allow Australian businesses in the building and construction industry greater access to Standards.

WORKPLACE POLICIES A CONSULTATION PROCESS

SW is enjoying a beautiful late spring as the COVID-19 lockdowns wind down towards the 15 December deadline, when all people may move freely, and workers will be back in the workplace. For the NSW Building and Construction Industry the end of the lockdowns could not come soon enough. The LGAs of concern and the endlessly complex Public Health Orders will hopefully be just a memory. Now we can get back to what we do best, building the great State of NSW.

NSW was able to lead the way out of lockdown directly due to an uptake of the vaccines which far exceeded what was predicted. A few short months ago some experts were wringing their hands and hoping the State would reach 60% full vaccination, now we look set to hit the mark somewhere around the 94% mark, perhaps higher! Now the rush back to work is on, there is one issue that is coming into sharp focus which is this; not everyone chose to get vaccinated. This is leading to many difficult discussions

in workplaces across the State. The question of vaccinated and unvaccinated workers working together and the effects on staff health and safety and business viability is arousing passions on all sides of the debate. The issue is a tricky one. When it comes to the workplace, the decision about whether to make COVID-19 vaccination mandatory in that workplace is a decision which will usually fall to the employer. Apart from a few occupations in NSW (e.g., aged care, airport workers etc.) vaccination is not a requirement mandated

by the law. When it comes to determining the question of vaccination against COVID-19 in the workplace, each employer must decide what their position will be on this question. One clear way an employer can set out expectations on this issue is to have a workplace policy concerning COVID-19 vaccination. Once the expectations around vaccination are clearly set out, employers are in a better position to deal with vaccination questions on a case-by-case basis as they arise. Heritage-listed Residential Building Raised, Re-aligned and Re-supported with Teretek® The owner of a 3-storey, split-level block of units contacted Mainmark after detecting large cracks in the building’s internal and external walls. The cracks were visible in most walls and the floors were becoming noticeably uneven. The situation had deteriorated over several months with significant cracking and unlevel floors indicating major structural issues due to severe differential settlement. A significant degree of building lift was required to raise the structure back to within 5mm of its original level. As the building was on the State Heritage Register for Residential Flat Buildings, Mainmark also needed to ensure that the building’s structural aesthetics were not significantly altered. Mainmark’s Teretek resin was injected into the soil beneath the building’s foundations in a process like keyhole surgery, with the solution strategically targeting the weakest points, allowing Mainmark to achieve its objective of raising the

building back to level. The successful lifting and re-levelling process also helped to reduce the large cracks in the walls, with many cracks narrowing to within a few millimetres. Interior repairs were then undertaken to restore the building’s former heritage aesthetic which included structural stitching, rendering, and painting. Despite the project complexities, Mainmark successfully completed the project in three days. Both the property’s owner, and the forensic engineer, Daniel Lee from Fairdinkum Technical Services, were really impressed with Mainmark’s approach to the challenging project.

It means they can hit the ground running, make fewer mistakes, and know what’s expected of them on a job site. 3: LESS CHURN, MORE EARN Studies have shown that apprentices that have completed a pre-employment program are less likely to drop-out in the early stages of their apprenticeship and are more likely to fully complete their apprenticeship. This means you don’t invest valuable time and money starting an apprentice only to have them leave when they discover the job is not right for them; leaving you to start the process again. 4: SAFETY SAVVY All apprentices that complete a Master Builders pre-employment program undertake training in Working Safely at Heights and Manual Handling. They learn how to safely handle and use tools and equipment so they can construct wall frames and demolish existing structures. They learn about identifying hazards and hazardous substances such as dust/silica and asbestos and are given an awareness of fatigue management, sun-sense and managing hydration. This all means they come to you with a solid safety foundation. 5: READY TO GO STARTER PACKS All apprentices that have completed a Master Builders pre-employment program come ready to go with a backpack full of essentials for starting on your worksite. The backpack comes with a hi-vis shirt, a hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, dust masks, water bottle, hat, and carpenters’ pencils. Adult Apprenticeship Commencement Program Monday 10 January 2022 – Friday 21 Jan 2022 This program has been developed specifically for people over the age of 21 seeking to participate in a Carpentry Apprenticeship. The program consists of a 2-week training program establishing basic carpentry skills and safety training as well a replicating physical and practical hands-on site skills.

Successful apprentices will attend Master Builders Education and Skills Development Centre and undertake a uniquely designed Adult Apprenticeship program that can see apprentices complete in as little as 24 months.

Pre-Apprenticeship Carpentry Program 21 February 2022 – 11 March 2022 This program has been created to provide a holistic approach to preparing high quality 1st-year carpentry apprentices. The three-week program includes hands-on experience in entry level construction skills including building house frames, demolishing structures, and undertaking measurements and calculations. Candidates learn how to remain safe on site and training includes working safely at heights, manual handling, and the safe use of power tools.

Female Pre-Apprenticeship Carpentry Program 31 January 2022 – 18 February 2022 Master Builders Apprenticeship Services are excited to announce an all-female three-week pre-apprenticeship program. The course aims to encourage and assist female candidates into a carpentry apprenticeship. This program includes all of the hands-on, entry level training as all of our pre-Apprenticeship Programs, with the added benefit of meeting and talking to current female MBA apprentices. Managing Sediment and Waste

Avoid costly fines and help protect waterways

wenty-one councils across Sydney, the Hunter and Central Coast, supported by the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) take part in a campaign called Get The Site Right. You may or may not have yet had a visit from the EPA during your latest building project. Any building site could be targeted by this campaign, from renovation projects, demolition, landscaping, and new housing estates. During May 2021, Council Officers inspected 762 sites with 67 per cent of those found to be compliant. A total of $383,167 in fines was issued to building sites that didn’t meet the standards. Offences ranged from significant sediment tracking off the site, concrete slurry washed into stormwater drains, to building supplies being stored on public land. Litter, such as cigarette butts, plastic bottles and food packaging, was also found on many sites,

including several, large residential housing estates.

Renovations hit an all time high And there is more to come...

lthough the HomeBuilder scheme closed at the end of March 2021, it is not the end of the renovation boom in New South Wales. In fact, prospects remain bright for the home renovations market for several reasons. Sydney house prices rose by 26% over the year to August 2021, with similar gains in regional NSW. This has been a huge boost for home renovations demand in NSW and investors are cashing in. In the three months to July 2021, the average value of each home renovations job approved in NSW was $163,445. For jobs in the $150,000 to $750,000 range, the average approval was valued at $304,800 during the three months to July 2021. The total value of home renovation approvals in NSW was $981.5 million in this same period. This was 44.4% higher than a year earlier. (Source: Master Builders Australia, September 2021) According to Master Builders Australia Chief Economist Shane Garrett, “the sale of an older house is often a trigger for renovations work by its new owners. Current turnover in the NSW housing market is very high compared with historic norms. There is strong evidence that detached houses in the 30 to 35 year age group receive a disproportionately large amount of renovations work. Founded in 1987, North Construction and Building is a commercial construction company with an award-winning reputation for excellence. Working across all areas of the commercial construction sector, North has a Specialist Projects division focusing on projects under $3m and a Major Works department managing projects up to $50m. North Construction plays a significant role in the regional construction landscape. The business has operated successfully on the Central Coast, NSW for more than 34 years and, over those

e were pleased to finally hold a twoday ASIST workshop on the Central Coast, after many postponements due to COVID-19. A big shout out to Karly Falzon, Cameron Barnard, Jacob Morrow and Brady Casey from North Construction & Building Pty Ltd, Andrew Allum and Jayden Schembri from Advance Building Service, Warren Ward from Hyper Cut N Drill, Keegan Foley from Stevens Construction, Kerrie Bendeich and Chris Salmon from Master Builders NSW and Andrew Bate from MATES in Construction NSW for having completed the two (2) days of Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training workshops (ASIST) on Tuesday, 19 October and Wednesday, 20 October 2021 at Tumbi Umbi. Thank you to NSW Health for funding this very important program. This would not be possible without Master Builders NSW, in partnership with Heather Drew and Michael Raftery from MATES in Construction NSW who facilitated the ASIST workshops.

Barrie Frost OAM On 4th September, our long-time member Barrie Frost passed away, surrounded by his wife Jan and family. Barrie was an Honorary Member of the MBA with 52 years of membership. He was a passionate local builder who joined the Central Coast Division Committee in 1969 and became the president of the Committee in 1973 to 1976. Barrie’s strong commitment to the industry led him to the role as President of MBA in 1983-84. Through his dedicated leadership Barrie was awarded Life Membership in 1989 and Divisional Gold Medal in 1998. We had the pleasure of having Barrie speak at a Division Night in 2019 on the Central Coast, he enthusiastically walked the members down memory lane sharing stories of the local building industry during those early years.

IT FEELS A LITTLE LIKE DEJA VU

ith Wollongong being included as part of Greater Sydney, our office was again thrust into lockdown. The team was kept very busy during this time assisting members navigate their way through the range of changes to the Public Health Order. While our telephonic contact was much higher than usual, we unfortunately had to put our face-to-face events and Divisional Meetings on hold. There was light at the end of the tunnel. At the end of the 107 days in lockdown, there was one highlight for our region. In September we were able to resume training, which included a nine-day CPC31411 Certificate III in Construction Waterproofing Workshop. The course was run safely and under COVID-19

conditions. As is often the case with this course, participants were quick to comment on how much they learned and how shocked they were when they realised how easily defects can occur.

Builders vs Architects

The Builders vs Architects Sports Night is in its 37th year and is traditionally held on the Monday before Melbourne Cup. After missing 2020 due to COVID-19, it was great to be able to hold this event in 2021 with some very competitive teams in the field. Playing for the Barrie Hamilton Trophy, a 3-legged saw horse designed by architects and made to work by builders. After all the scores were tallied the Sports Night ended up as a draw. For the second time in history the result would be decided by a coin toss and unfortunately 2021 was the year of the architects.

As some of you may be aware, MBA NSW has purchased a block of land on the corner of McLachlan and Dalton Streets in Orange. The long-term plan is to build an architecturally designed regional hub that will incorporate training facilities, meeting rooms and plenty of office space so that we can have more concentrated member services in our region. However, in the interim we have outgrown our current office and are moving to 10 Ralston Drive, Orange. his has been yet another year to remember with this dreaded Covid.

Probably like everyone else, we are so over it but we have to keep doing what we do and keep thinking we are a lot better off than other industries with no work at all. Our biggest disappointment this year was postponing the 2021 Southern Regions Excellence in Building Awards which will now be held on Saturday 5th March 2022. We have also planned the 2022 Awards will be held on Saturday 29th October. Tracy Cooley commenced with us in May and is going very well assisting our Members. Some of you may have already spoken to her over the last few months. During the lockdown, both Tracy and I have completed the mammoth and enjoyable task of placing check-in calls to every Member in the Southern Regions to see how they were coping during this time and to offer our assistance when required. Most commented how lucky they were to still be working, really appreciated the information the MBA were providing with Covid up-dates

on a regular basis and also acknowledged and appreciated how the MBA were working heavily behind the scenes with Government to keep the industry working. During our calls, members also commented that they really miss our face-to-face contact at Division Meetings and are very keen to recommence as soon as possible.

Weathertex panels tick all the green boxes for sustainability and low-cost construction

eading architectural timber panels manufacturer and supplier Weathertex was the first choice of the designer in the remodelling 0f a 1970s beach residence on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast that ticked all the green boxes – and met the budget. Richard Graves of RG Design Studio, with moderate alterations, raised the new roof to the second floor allowing the existing first-floor bedrooms to retain views north through the new living space void. Weathergroove 150 Natural panels were recommended for the project by the builder Constructions 161 as a time and costsaving alternative. Manufactured from Australian hardwoods certified by Responsible Wood to Australian Standard 4707 ensured that the chain of custody of the timber met a strict and independent accreditation process. Structural elements were defined into overlapping walls, planes and overhangs that “dissolve and exaggerate spatial boundaries”. Extensive natural materials, along with the Weathertex timber cladding, included concrete, stone and glass. The quick and easy installation of Weathergroove panels saved money and delivered naturally textured timber panels of a consistent colour requested by the owner. Chain of custody certification provided Construction 161 peace of mind as it tracked the forest-based products … “from a sustainable source through to the Weathergroove hardwood panels, the final product”. Weathertex uses a selection of mixed species including gums, ironbark, mahogany, stringybark and blackbutt brought in as round logs sourced from forests within a 150 km radius of the factory in the Hunter Region of New South Wales and certified to Responsible Wood Standard 4708. Only 100 m from Shelly Beach at Caloundra, the Weathergroove Natural panels on the beach house provide the

characteristics and look of raw, undressed timber. [The beach house was recognised in the latest Building Design Queensland award for residential alterations and additions]. Some of the panels were stained to maintain the fresh brown natural timber colouring, while others were allowed to weather naturally under the sun. Weathergroove panels were also an ideal way of connecting indoor and outdoor spaces with continuous use of the same cladding dissolving the lines between two areas, ideal for a beach residence. Not only quick and easy to install, the panels are incredibly versatile, used for external cladding, overhang lining and garage door plus internal walls and ceilings. Designer Richard Graves has been specifying Weathertex products on many sustainable projects since using them. And after Constructions 161’s proposal to another architect on a commercial project, Weathergroove Smooth and Natural panels were used instead of metal panels. Weathertex uses a century-old manufacturing process free of toxic and polluting chemicals and provides the only product of its kind that contains no artificial glues or binder. ustralia used to be an easy place to buy steels to build with. Standards were enforced by engineers, local councils, and government departments, and domestic Australian or New Zealand steel producers manufactured world-class product that supplied virtually the entire market. All any specifier had to do was state in their documentation “to Australian Standards” and all any builder had to ask his suppliers was “how much?” Site engineers and checking authorities did the rest. It was really that simple and by and large, it worked – but no longer. A Global Market Today, Australia is part of a highly competitive world market for steel. Materials can and do come from a variety of sources around the globe: Asia, Africa, Europe, dictated by price and availability. This flexibility gives consumers the best price for their products, but it can trip up the unwary when it comes to getting the right “quality”. If we define “quality” as “performance characteristics” (surely our governing concern), then “quality” varies wildly between markets. So, just how does anyone know what they are getting when they place their order? With material coming from diverse sources and manufactured to many different specifications, specifying “to AS/NZS Standards” does not guarantee that what is supplied will perform as intended by the design, unless certain checks are made. Regular site checking of materials is very much a thing of the past. Reliance is almost exclusively on the documentation that arrives with the material supplied. What is “Adequate Documentation”? Documentation is therefore of critical concern. What, in fact constitutes “adequate documentation”? Whilst this differs by Standard

Standard. Further documentation and checks are necessary, even if there are “Factory Production Control” (FPC) audits as well;

there are basically four different means of satisfying this aspect (and one, or more may be required): 1. Suppliers’ Quality Management System (e.g. ISO 9001 certification); 2. Statistical sampling (e.g. long-term quality testing results) 3. Product Certification (e.g. independent 3rdparty audit by an accredited certification body competent in the products assessed) and; 4. “Other such means proposed by the manufacturer or supplier and acceptable to the customer” The intent is the consistent delivery of specified materials demonstrably conforming to the Standard, fit for the intended purpose and adequately managing contract risk. So, how does a designer, specifier, or builder know that all the steel delivered to their project meets the minimum requirements? Unfortunately, the simple answer is that it is not easy and all branches of the construction industry have greater responsibilities in this regard than in “the good old days”. Apples and Oranges A quick look at the list above shows that the four options above do not provide equal confidence or outcomes: • A supplier’s Quality Management system, such as ISO 9001 is a quality system that helps ensure consistent processes and methods are followed by the company. It does not in and of itself guarantee that any materials will be manufactured or supplied to the requirements of any particular

• Long-term quality testing of each product provides a much greater level of certainty of quality, presuming that it is maintained consistently and completely. However, the supplier’s own declaration is not sufficient. Samples should be drawn randomly, at a particular quality and timing from a source of “known history”. But, who checks this? And how can it be verified? • “Other means” puts the entire onus on the customer to determine compliance from the results of testing coupled with the manufacturer’s guarantee of product conformance. Does the customer, or approval body (engineer or building surveyor) really wish to take full responsibility for determining that the supplier has met all the requirements of the Standard? • Lastly, we have independent, expert, 3rd-party product certification bodies that examine all of the above criteria. Being independent of the steel suppliers, they are able to provide comprehensive and effective auditing and certification of performance of certified products. Clearly, independent, expert, 3rd-party product certification is not only the most rigorous system, being independent, means that it also provides the highest level of confidence in the outcome for all parties. Lysaght breaks the mould with condensation management solutions

ondensation build-up in roof and wall cavities can cause long term aesthetic, health and structural problems in buildings if not managed properly. This problem is caused by changes in temperatures – when the surface temperature falls below the dew point of the surrounding air, condensation in the form of water vapour will take place on the colder surface. Generally, small quantities of condensation can be tolerated so long as it is given the opportunity to dry out. If the environment remains wet for longer periods though, issues may arise. If not kept in check, condensation causes mould build-up on surfaces and in HVAC systems, can result in plaster deformities, and in severe cases, can cause damage to framing in the form of warping and rotting. New provisions under the National Construction Code (NCC) 2019, have removed ambiguity and have outlined minimal requirements for residential buildings covering how much ventilation is needed and where it should be placed (Clause F6.4 NCC 2019 Volume One and 3.8.7.4 of NCC 2019 Volume Two).

While ducted extraction systems do a great job in removing steam from wet areas, installing roof cavity ventilation will further reduce condensation, providing additional peace of mind. Your Future, Your Super legislation – what it means for employers From 1 November 2021, the Your Future Your Super (YFYS) legislation will see individuals ‘stapled’ to the first super fund they join. They will be linked to this super fund and it will follow them throughout their working life — unless they choose a different fund. While there are several reforms including a YourSuper online comparison tool and an annual performance test, stapling will have the biggest impact for employers and those changing jobs. What you need to do • You must provide a new employee with a Choice of Fund form (like the Cbus choice of super fund form found on the Cbus website or the ATO Standard Choice Form) within 28 days of them starting. • New employees can choose to join your default super fund or nominate their preferred super fund by completing a Choice of Fund form. • If a new employee doesn’t make an active choice of fund, you’ll need to use ATO Online Services to determine their stapled super fund. • You must use ATO Online Services to determine a new employee’s stapled fund. • If a new employee has more than one super fund, the ATO will determine the employee’s stapled fund based on a set of rules (the rules act as a tiebreaker). These may include factors such as when the account was created, how recently contributions were made and the account balance.

he following is not personal financial advice, but it does contain useful information which many people should think about. Before examining the nine myths around life insurance, consider one key truth: fully underwritten life insurance can bring an added degree of financial security and peace of mind into your life.

Myth 1: Less medical questions means quicker and better cover Several directly available life insurance covers don’t ask many health questions when you apply. Often these have a higher number of and/or broader pre-existing condition clauses that may result in the greater likelihood of your claim being delayed or even declined. It can be easy to buy cover because it’s quick and/ or cheap, but this doesn’t mean it’s the best life insurance for your particular circumstances. Myth 2: I’m single, so I don’t need life insurance Fact: Even if you don’t have any dependants or a partner, there may still be debts to pay and funeral expenses to cover if you were to pass away. For example, the average basic cremation in Australia costs upwards of $4000, with burials costing much more. If you don’t have many debts, nor a partner or children to think about, then your life insurance may cost you less than you think because you may decide that you do not need a high level of cover. Myth 3: My superannuation fund’s life insurance is enough Fact: The life insurance provided within many superannuation funds may not adequately cover your life insurance needs. Research shows that super’s median default cover meets only about half of the basic needs for households with no children. Myth 4: Life insurance is expensive Fact: The cost of life insurance might surprise you – it may be less expensive than you think. Policies vary, and premiums will depend on your age, health and lifestyle. A non-smoker in their 30s can expect to pay less than $1 a day

n Friday 19th November, the Master Builders Association of NSW had the pleasure of welcoming Sam Bloom, our guest of honour, at our first Women in Construction Luncheon, held at Royal Randwick.

Sam spoke of her awe-inspiring tale of her life’s journey, tragedy, battles, triumphs, strength, perseverance, resilience and hope. There was not a dry eye in the room as Sam spoke of the difficulty of asking and accepting help yet how the support of others got her through. A message that resonated with many

who were present in the room. Her message – we are all stronger, braver and more capable than we realise. We can all draw strength, wisdom and inspiration from her. Sam and Cameron (her husband) message of “Don't Put Your Dreams On Hold” was received with a standing ovation. A hugely successful luncheon indeed, with over 140 guests attending the event. Our members and their employees have said they are looking forward to the 2022 Women in Construction Luncheon.

The Master Builders Association of NSW Excellence in Housing and Pool Awards are the State’s most prestigious residential building awards. he Housing Awards salute the achievements of the construction industry — an industry that employs more full-time people, engages the largest number of small businesses, and trains more apprentices than any other sector across the nation. The calibre of construction this year was simply extra-ordinary. It is so encouraging to see that there are new builders and younger builders contributing to our built environment in such a fantastic way. The construction outcomes achieved this year were so outstanding, that the judges had serious difficulty arriving at their decisions! The winners were announced on Saturday 13th November at the Annual Awards Night hosted by television personalities Johanna Griggs, Peter Colquhoun and Angie Asimus. This year the awards were televised on Channel 7two on Sunday 21 November 2021. ROSS FINNIE JP Ross’ career within the construction industry has spanned over four decades. Origins in managing numerous projects of varying architectural type, size and complexity to now specialising in WH&S, encompassing environmental and quality issues, has ensured his plenary comprehension of this sphere. He is a member of numerous organizations beginning with MBA NSW where he is a Gold member and former divisional president of Northern Suburbs Division, representative of the Council of Management, Legal and Contracts and WorkCover NSW Construction Industry Working Party and Standards Australia Construction Advisory Group. A member also of Resolution Institute Aust, NSCA and former secretary of ARCA. Ross established his own company TREW Enterprises in 1995 specialising in project management, restoration and heritage building work to now focusing specifically in areas of WH&S/HSEQ compliance and training, including training and assessments for SafeWork NSW and expert witness reporting. He is the NSW representative on MBA Australia’s Residential Builders Council.

TERRY GALE Terry has over 50 years’ experience in the construction industry in both luxury residential and commercial sectors. In 1999 Terry merged two successful and long-established building companies, Pimas Group and Gale Building, to form the NSW building firm Pimas Gale Construction. Since Pimas Gale’s inception and under Terry’s leadership Pimas Gale built up an enviable reputation for the construction of custom-built, architecturally designed homes and luxury apartments constantly delivering projects to the highest standards. This resulted in numerous industry awards putting Pimas Gale at the forefront of the Sydney luxury construction market. As a working Director, Terry’s managerial role was to oversee all Pimas Gale’s Construction Systems, auditing and monitoring of quality assurance, WH&S, programming, planning, and costing, direct dealings with clients, clients’ representatives, and architects to ensure the delivery of all projects to the clients’ high expectations within time and budgetary constraints. Terry was also selected from builders across NSW to serve on the Builders Review Board for Vero Insurance.

PAUL GIRDLER Paul is a licensed builder with over 50 years’ experience in the industry and a long-term member of industry associations. Initially working as a contractor, he obtained his Building Certificate in 1988, established his own business and continues undertaking projects across inner Sydney, specialising in residential renovations, extensions and restorations. During his career he has been a part-time teacher, designing and teaching Basic Home Maintenance for Petersham TAFE and teaching in the School of Building at Sydney TAFE.

PETER MEREDITH Peter has over 48 years’ experience in the building and construction industry involving a wide variety of construction sectors, including 29 years as an employee of the Master Builders Association of NSW, with 17 years as Director of Housing. Peter represented the association on a variety of industry and government committees and Boards, including the NSW Building Professionals Board, Home Building Advisory Council, and the Building Relation Regulation Advisory Council. Peter has been at the forefront on the MBA’s consultations and lobbying efforts over Home Building Compensation Insurance, review and amendments to the Home Building Act and Home Building regulations and the review of industry’s Security of Payments legislation.

MAX MOSHER Max is an energy consultant and has worked in the energy industry for more than 40 years. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience in relation to solar and energyefficient house design, including energy utilisation in the domestic sector and thermal performance assessments. Max has been a committee member on a Standards Australia Review Committee BD/058 titled “Materials for the Thermal Insulation of Buildings”. He has been on the judging panels for the Building Designers Association Annual Design Awards, the Master Builders Association Excellence in Housing and Construction Awards, the Master Builders Australia National Excellence in Building and Construction Awards, and the Local Government Association Environment Awards. Max is a founding member and former director of the Association of Building Sustainability Assessors (ABSA).

MICHAEL O’DONNELL Michael is a licensed builder, accredited Building Consultant and Livable Housing Australia Design Guidelines Assessor. He is currently vice president of MBA NSW and chairman of the MBA NSW Housing Committee. He is one of four industry representatives on the NSW government’s Home Building Compensation Fund Underwriting Committee. Michael joined NSW homebuilder Huxley Homes in 1976 and in 1979 took over Huxley Homes’ new Regional Building Division. Michael left Huxley Homes in 1995 and established his own business, MKO Constructions, which specialized for nearly 20 years in the design and construction of residential extensions, renovations, and first-floor additions. Michael has his Diploma in Building and Construction and Diploma in Workplace Training and Assessment.

STEPHEN RAYNER Stephen has been a member of the Master Builders Association for 42 years. He is a past president of the MBA Northern Suburbs Division and has been treasurer since 2008. Stephen holds a Carpenter and Joiner Trade Certificate along with a Clerk of Works Certificate. He is the director of Stream Constructions Pty Ltd, which specialises in architect-designed projects, domestic and commercial renovations. During his building career, Stephen was a part-time teacher at Hornsby TAFE, teaching the building component of the Real Estate Certificate. He received the MBA Divisional Gold Member Award in 2012.

LEO STANTON Leo is a licensed builder and an accredited building consultant with a membership with the Master Builders Association over 20 years. Leo is currently the president of the MBA Parramatta Cumberland division and sits on the Council of Management of the MBA. As an accredited building consultant, Leo has delivered the pre-purchase building & consultancy course at the MBA since 2007 and is a current member on the building consultancy committee, providing product and services for the members of the association and the industry at large. Further to this, Leo is acting as an expert witness in the National Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT) courts of Australia. He is the director of Stanton Homes Pty Ltd, which is a construction company involved in property subdivisions and residential development projects; and runs his own consultancy business, Stanton Building & Consultancy Services. Leo has his Assoc. Diploma in Building and Construction, Building Surveying Qualifying Certificate and holds his current TAE ticket in Workplace Assessment & Training.

ANDREW TOMKINS As a third generation builder Andrew has been Managing Director of A. A. Tomkins & Sons for the last 25 years, the business being founded in the early 1920s by his grandfather. He completed his surveying certificate in 1978. Andrew also holds a carpentry and joinery trade certificate and completed his Building certificate in 1984, holding a builder’s license since 1985. A. A. Tomkins & Sons has been an MBA member since 1983. The business has participated and won MBA awards and their MBA apprentice won Apprentice of the Year in 1998. Andrew has also practised as an artist all his life. As a Wynne prize finalist, he has won several awards, exhibited widely throughout Australia and internationally, and recently at the National Art Museum of China in the Beijing Biennale.

JOHN WORTHINGTON John has been a member of the Master Builders Association of NSW since 1976. He graduated from Sydney Technical College in 1971 and holds a Building Certificate and Building Diploma MBA & UNSW. He also received a Timber Pest Certificate from TAFE in 1989, Master of Dispute Resolution from the University of Technology in 1998, Professional Certificate in Arbitration and Mediation from the University of Adelaide in 1999, Accredited Certifier Program (BSAP) from the University of Technology Sydney in 2004 and was nationally accredited by the Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators 2008. He was chairman of the Building Consultants Council from 2009 for nine years and a member of the Council of Management of the MBA for eight years. John is currently engaged as a mediator, builder and building consultant, acting as an expert witness in the Consumer Trader & Tenancy Tribunal and the court system in Australia. John was also “the builder” on the ABC television program “The Home Show” for four years from 1990.

The home was purchased by the owner in a half-demolished condition, highlighting the complexity of the build and the sheer scale of the project. Divided into three separate segments, the new pool, the major renovation of the main building and the necessary extension of both the front and back of the home, this renovation project surely was no small undertaking. The new pool, a true standout feature of the project, adds to the sleek feel of the home however, perfectly executing this showpiece was not without its challenges. The original had not been built to standard, resulting in sea water entering the pool.

The end result however was well-worth the challenge, offering the perfect space to both relax and entertain. When it comes to the main house renovation, it is highly evident that Probuilt Projects paid close attention to every detail and used only

The stairwell featuring curved timber and a teardrop shaped skylight is stunning. The plasterboard ceiling detail is also amazing.

The large-scale green wall on the front facade of the project has set it apart and made this project a beautifully private oasis in its “concrete jungle” surrounds. The complexity of the irregular saw tooth ceiling was hard to comprehend. The builder was able to come up with construction solutions that transformed the architects’ vision into reality. The single pour off-form stretched ellipse double height column was just one more outstanding feature. An extremely demanding project completed to perfection.

Casa Rosa, Bronte The brise soleil screens of recycled terracotta roof tiles and pink off-form & cantilevered concrete were outstanding features of this addition to a Victorian bungalow. Paddington A design that required the demolition of the 3 lower levels of a 5 level Victorian Terrace was a huge challenge to the builders who overcame this with complex temporary support structures. The need to underpin existing and adjacent structures also required great skill and knowhow. The resulting renovation and extension are superb and mask the complex nature of the preliminary work. Acert Roth House, Centennial Park There are many outstanding features of this project. The curved zinc shingle soffit blended seamlessly into the curved plasterboard ceiling. The bespoke curved, cantilevered staircase turns around smooth off-form concrete. The underfloor space featured a brick vaulted ceiling. The “shark mouth” ceiling and lighting detail of the living room was complex and eye catching.

The interior of this weatherboard heritage listed hall was converted into a modern “warehouse” dwelling with mezzanine bedrooms and bathroom overlooking the open plan living and kitchen. The unique result showcased a high level of skill.

Power Station House, Redfern A very sensitive approach to the heritage values of this massive heritage listed building was apparent in this project. Detailed patching work and cleaning on the façade blended perfectly with the worn exterior. Many later add-ons were carefully stripped back to the original fabric. Discreet modern kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and joinery additions did not detract from the industrial origins. Challenging work and an outstanding achievement. HAGAN BUILT PTY LTD Haberfield This substantial Federation cottage has been given the complete 70’s make-over. Even the characteristic gable front had been removed. With careful attention to old photographs, the house was completely restored to its original style. Where the external skin of brickwork had been removed perfect colour and gauge matching with new bricks was indistinguishable from the original. A flawless contemporary addition was added at the rear. True craftmanship across many trades.

This very constrained site created many challenges not the least of which was extensive hand excavation. Some large and significant heritage elements had to be removed then later re-instated. Detailed verandah posts were remade in-house and moulds taken to replace plaster elements. The end result is the beautiful restoration of a significant Queen Anne dwelling with extremely well executed contemporary additions.

Mosman It is hard to imagine how much additional space can be gained within a relatively small roof area. Careful design and construction met all the needs of a growing family at a very modest cost. Plan preparation and submission of the DA simplified the process for the owners. Excellent work and a great outcome.

Stonelea, Megalong Valley The design utilises passive solar design principles with a combination of good orientation, high thermal mass from the concrete floors and walls, and high levels of insulation for roof, ceilings, walls and floors. The finished home is a bright comfortable home with a low environmental impact, sitting in a sensitive environment. It is a worthy winner of the 2021 Excellence in Environmental Management Award.

PACIFIC PLUS CONSTRUCTIONS Paddington This project demanded blemish free off-form concrete for the walls and pitched ceiling all in a saw -tooth profile. The flawless finish gave little indication of the difficulty in achieving it. The reinforcement and formwork required for this profile was extremely complex as was the bracing due to the lack of form ties. An outstanding example of concrete work.

Eden Brae’s stunning Forsyth 33 is a Hamptons style two storey, 4-bedroom home. The design suits a multitude of block orientations and includes the essential combination of quality of finish and value for money.

This was an exceedingly complex alteration/addition. The access was difficult with constraints on delivery, use of plant and removal of waste. Partial demolition of concrete walls, floors and roof had to be completed by hand. Excavation and construction of a pool below sea level was constrained by the incoming tide. These and other factors necessitated site management and planning of the highest order. The complex design required a deep knowledge of the building process to achieve the architect’s vision. The execution of the work across all trades and attention to detail was exemplary and driven by the builder working on site. The levels of finish achieved were faultless.
