ALLERGY SEASON

Prepare with these helpful tips from Andersens Roma

S

pring is the season for renewal, but for the 15% of Australians affected by hay fever, it can be a time of dread. Medically known as seasonal allergic rhinitis, hay fever is caused by "the body’s immune response to inhaled pollen". Symptoms include a runny nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes, to name a few. If you’re one of many people affected by seasonal allergies, you’ll know that it’s near impossible to avoid pollen outside of maybe living in a plastic bubble. However, just because you can’t control Mother Nature, doesn’t mean you can’t do your best to minimise the effects of allergens in your own home. ■ Vacuum at least twice a week: Use a water filtration vacuum cleaner with a HEPA (high efficiency particulate) filter. ■ Steam clean: Steam clean carpets on a regular basis, especially in the bedroom where you spend a majority of your time. ■ Air-con on: Avoid heavy fan use as this can stir up dust. ■ Clean air filters and ducts: Clean air filters and ducts at least once a year. ■ Wash bedding weekly: Gather your sheets, pillowcases

and other bedding and wash every week in hot water to kill and reduce dust mites. ■ Tumble dry: Decrease your level of exposure to pollen by using a tumble dryer instead of air-drying bedding or clothing. ■ Pet-free bedrooms: Pet dander and saliva can be a trigger for some allergy sufferers. ■ Dehumidify: Keep your house well ventilated and the humidity low. ■ De-clutter: Clear away rubbish and mess frequently. ■ Inspect your garden: Check your yard for plants, weeds, or trees that cause allergies and have the offenders removed if possible. ■ Let grass grow: Avoid mowing the lawn to limit your pollen exposure. ■ Consider blinds or shutters: Heavy curtains are harder to keep clean. As always, for medical advice about your allergies, please consult your doctor. If you need help deciding on allergy-friendly flooring or window-coverings for your home, talk to the team at Andersens Roma – they’ll be happy to help.

SNAP HAPPY GUESTS Let your guests join in on the fun with these clever ideas.

I

n the furore that is a modern wedding we are so cajoled into loving our special moment and every inch of our special selves that it is easy to lose track of something important: the people you share it with. Let them leave a memento. Sometimes it is the candid memories of the guests’ antics that leave you with the biggest smiles after all is done and dusted and you are flicking through photos with your new spouse. HERE’S SOME GREAT IDEAS. DISPOSABLE CAMERAS Place one at each table. Have your Emcee invite guests to use the roll of film on their table. They must try and get a snap of each person at the table. As your wedding rolls on it is guaranteed you will have some beautiful, funny and chaotic photos that the hired professional never could have captured. MEMORY JAR Place a large glass vessel with a lid to one side of your reception. Place a bowl of small slips of paper and a jar of pens beside this. Have your Emcee announce that the new husband and wife would love each guest to write one memory to place in the jar, and write their names on the back. POLAROID TREE This can be a decorative false tree, brown string with pegs strung decoratively or a piece of beautiful driftwood or dried tree branch. Place a Polaroid camera beside the tree so guests can take a selfie. Ensure there are pegs for guests to pin their photo to the tree and a jar of pens so multiple people can write their notes at the same time. FINGERPRINT TREE Have an artistic friend draw the trunk and branches of a tree on a canvas. Ensure there are plenty of off-shooting branches. Place an ink pad (whatever colour you like) beside the canvas so guests can put their fingerprint as a leaf on the tree.

THRIFTY WEDDING TIPS Getting married doesn’t have to cost the Earth. Get creative and you can save yourself a lot of time, effort and money.

W

E ALWAYS want the best for our wedding, but having the best doesn’t mean you need to spend a fortune. Yes, weddings are expensive, but it doesn’t have to be too expensive, so you can still save up for the more important things after the wedding. Here are a few tips to help save on the big day: ■ Encourage friends and family to offer their help or talents in exchange for wedding gifts. ■ In lieu of gifts, ask your guests to contribute to your honeymoon fund. ■ Consider booking a wedding package overseas – you can have your ceremony somewhere special and enjoy your honeymoon, then have a gathering to celebrate on your return. ■ Only invite people you know and love. Inviting the aunt you haven’t seen since you were five is just costing you a lot of money for a relationship that isn’t there. Make your wedding day special by only inviting people who are a part of your life. ■ Sign up to multiple wedding website mailing lists. You might find out about a great sale that will save you loads of cash.

September 2017

■ Keep your ceremony and reception venues at the same place or within walking distance to save money on transport. ■ Rent a house for the ceremony and reception that can accommodate the bridal party to sleep over the night before. ■ A beautiful rooftop with a view makes for a gorgeous small wedding venue. Or get married in a park or a public place, then have the reception in a restaurant. ■ Print a poster with the ceremony program and have it visible when people walk into your venue rather than printing one for each person. ■ Think about having the ceremony at the local courthouse and then have a bigger fancier reception. Or have your ceremony in your backyard or a local park rather than hiring a venue. ■ Only hire a professional photographer for a few hours rather than a whole day. Keep them local to your location, otherwise you will be incurring their travel and accommodation costs. Ask for an all-inclusive package that allows you to keep the photography images.

CLIENTS ARE KEY

Laser Clinics Australia in Toowoomba understands old-fashioned service.

I

N this day and age – achieving business success takes a multi-faceted approach. While the obvious elements of customer service and product knowledge are still important, now – more than ever – having a clear understating of your clients and their lifestyle is an imperative ingredient. Luckily for all in the Downs and Maranoa regions, Amanda Thurbin of Laser Clinics Australia Toowoomba has a personal connection to the area, giving her an unparalleled understanding and appreciation for the community and its people. "Growing up in a community like Chinchilla and having ties there has, I think, taught me to have a strong work ethic and a friendliness that can sometimes be lost in large cities," Amanda said. "The Downs and Maranoa communities, to me, are beautiful, proud, regions with hard working, down to earth people at their heart. "They support one another and their local communities through good times and bad." It is this strong work ethic and dogged determination which

CAREFUL PLANNING Have your partner chip in to help with the planning, it is sure to lighten the load

Y

OUR wedding day is without a doubt one of the most memorable and extraordinary days of your life. You’re making a beautiful and timeless commitment to the love of your life, giving dedication and a promise that is second to none. However, this special day comes with a lot of stress, which can be a heavy weight sitting on your shoulders. So the ring is on your finger and the planning is set to begin— but where do you start? There’s more to think about and organise than you ever thought possible, and with the price of weddings rising (the average Australian wedding now costs more than $36,000, with the 2015 Bride to Be Cost of Love survey reporting the figure is more in the range of $65,000) and the internet spawning new trends, it can be a struggle to keep up. We can’t all hire wedding planners, and many may not want to. At the heart of it, the well-known fact is that planning a wedding is a mammoth task, and your wedding is not something that you want to skimp on. But while there’s a lot of things you need to tick off the check-list to make the event come off without a hitch, don’t let stress get the better of you— this event is a day to be cherished and remembered for the rest of your life. They say Rome wasn’t built in a day, so give yourself plenty of time to get everything done and enjoy the ride in the process. There is however a way to minimise the risk of your special day becoming a day of stress. Number one... plan, plan, plan. Get together a notebook specifically for your wedding day and break your lists of things to do into daily tasks and continue to work with this method over the duration of the planning. This helps to drastically minimise stress as you are not looking at the overall task but are focusing on achievable daily goals. Another great tip for helping to reduce the stress is to get your partner involved. It is a common conception of men that once they slide the engagement ring onto their betroths finger, the next task they have is to repeat “I do” — the rest will take care of itself. For a bride-to-be however, nothing is more stressful than watching preparation tasks pile up and not having any help. To broach the subject of divvying up tasks without driving a

wedge between you both, the best way is to be upfront early on. This simply means having a chat about how much work you think should be left to you both, and how much should be done by professionals. Make sure you are both in agreement about this and also — importantly — the budget. Whatever your plan of attack, remember the wedding is for both of you and the last thing you want is negativity and division. After all, the most important thing is that you look forward to the big day and prepare as a team.

GLOWING SKIN Radiance Beauty Bar will have you looking your best come your wedding day.

W

hile many brides keenly focus on their beauty needs for the day of their wedding, treatments prior to the main event are essential in ensuring you look as radiant as possible when the big day arrives. According to Laurice Kennedy of Radiance Beauty Bar, there is an array of treatments perfectly tailored for brides-to-be covering everything from facials and back polishes, through to that all-important relaxation pedicure the week of the wedding. "Facials and a body polish treatment will have your skin at its absolute healthiest for your special day," Mrs Kennedy said. "They deeply cleanse and remove dead skin so your at-home skincare can do its job more effectively. "Skin treatments also deeply hydrate your skin and gradually improve it so it becomes toned, textured and glowing and best of all, facials and body treatments stimulate collagen production leading to smoother, refined skin. "It is recommended to start your regular skin treatments 3 to 4 months before the wedding and have your last one 10 to 14 days

before the main event. "Another absolute must-have for brides-to-be is a lash and brow tint with an eyebrow shape. "This will enhance your face and make your eyes pop and you won’t even need mascara!" For women looking to take advantage of the incredible benefits of IPL, Radiance Beauty Bar can help in this arena also. IPL skin rejuvenation reduces large pores, fine lines, sun damage & pigmentation and stimulates collagen production. "IPL not only offers skin rejuvenation but also acne therapy and permanent hair reduction and is a safe and effective way to gain silky smooth skin," Mrs Kennedy said. Offering an array of special bride-to-be packages including a facial and body polish for $125, the Radiance eye package for which covers all bases for $45 and an incredible complimentary pedicure with all 5 treatments booked, you cannot go past Roma’s own Radiance Beauty Bar to ensure you are looking your absolute best on your special day.

A HENS TO REMEMBER Be sure to consider the bride and her specific taste when planning the event.

T

he hens night is one tradition that will never die, purely based on the amount of fun a group of you and your best girlfriends can have together. It is typically the duty of the maid of honour to organise and plan the hens night, and it is important to consider the bride when planning. If the bride prefers quieter events, that should be taken into consideration, rather than a loud, clubbing venue being arranged. Remember you may have to tone things down depending on who is attending as younger or older guests may be present. Whether it’s a night out dancing or a girls’ night in drinking bubbly, playing games and just hanging out, make sure it’s primarily about spending quality time with the bride before she walks down the aisle. Listen to the wishes of the bride and if she is against doing anything too wild or risky, respect her decision —don’t take her to a raunchy club or sky diving.

A healthy approach is to have the matron of honour or head bridesmaid sit down with the bride-to-be a week before the arranged night and talk to her about the activities that she deems as acceptable, before picking two or three of these that the majority of people will enjoy.

CAPTURING THE MOMENT

PHOTO: RANK RAVEN PHOTOGRPAHY

W

HEN speaking with photographer Sophie Wakefield of Rank Raven in Roma, her passion for her profession is abundantly obvious. Having studied photography in high school, Sophie noticed early on that she had a knack for the profession and more importantly, a true passion. "What I love most about photography is the ability to capture a moment and freeze it forever," Sophie said. "I can edit any image to reflect a current mood or feeling, so a piece of myself is hidden in every photo I take." Sophie has taken to event photography and loves nothing more than offering her clients the timeless keepsake that is stunning imagery. "When it comes to my clients, I try to capture the raw emotion of

the moment. "I hope every new bride and groom I photograph can look back at their prints years later to find still the love and happiness that they experienced on their special day." Sophie covers weddings, birthdays, engagements, family portraits and other events. "Prices for weddings start as low as $570 to cover 6 hours of continuous photography, with photos delivered on a USB stick. Prints, canvases, and photo books are also available at an extra cost." Whether it is your special day you want captured, your child’s formal or a milestone birthday, look no further than Rank Raven Photography for meaningful images that are sure to last a lifetime.

TAKE A MOMENT

Take a step back to appreciate all of your wedding, even planning included.

W

hat is more important than the venue, the cake and the dress? The disposition. Nobody wants to be around someone who is hating their wedding day or the lead up to it. Yes, wedding planning and the day itself is stressful. After all you only (hopefully) have one crack at it, so you want those photos to be perfect. But remember to stop, take a breath and gauge how you are feeling. Are you relaxed and happy? Are you enjoying the preparations and later having your dearest around you? If not it is perhaps time to let go, step away from the bridal magazines and notes and let things evolve a little more organically. Remember people were getting married long before they allocated thousands of dollars to their wedding day. The most important part of this day is not the smooth sailing of

www.westernstarnews.com.au

every small detail, it is the fact two people have chosen to spend their lives together. So smile, have a sip of champagne, and laugh instead of yell as your flower girl spills raspberry lemonade down her dress before the photos, as your bridal car gets stuck in a traffic jam and as your best man fumbles nervously — and for a little too long — for the wedding rings. The sun will still come up in the morning despite it all. In the end it is only one day and you should enjoy it, whether or not there is a little chaos creeping into the photo album.

OMINATIONS have closed for the 2017 Maranoa Business Awards and judging by the influx of support, the gala dinner on October, 14 is set to be a pinnacle event for the region. "The support from our sponsors and the local community has been absolutely overwhelming," said Commerce Roma Vice President, Brodie Albeck. "This is the fourth year the awards have been held and the interest from business houses is still strong and our customer service category has once again been particularly popular. "The public were invited to nominate both an individual and a local business for the customer service award and the response

has been great." Mr Albeck said, as always, the night promised great entertainment and a chance for members of the business community to be recognised and appreciated for their tireless hard work and achievements. "Tim Horan is our Emcee for the evening and we will have a live band, along with a top class meal and the award announcements." The awards will be held at the Explorer's Inn Function Centre, Roma and tickets can be purchased from the Commerce Roma website.

ONE LONG TABLE

Taste buds are set to be tantalised as One Long Table hits Chinchilla.

HE region’s best produce will be on the table this October in Chinchilla. Celebrating food, culture and diversity, the annual One Long Table event will be transforming Heeny St in to an outdoor dining fare. This year’s event is expected to be the biggest one yet according to Chinchilla Community and Industry Inc. events coordinator Gaye Smith. "Last year was such a successful event and we are hoping to continue that this year," she said. "From what I heard there was around 2000 attendees last year and we are hoping to hit the 3500 mark this time so there will be more stalls and more entertainment." New food vendors to join the line-up this year include Garry’s Woodfired Pizza, The Greek Truck, The Cheese Van, Macey’s Hot Bread and Panashe. "There are going to be a variety of multicultural cuisines, ranging from Mexican to Thai to German," Ms Smith said.

ENHANCE NATURAL Make your features pop thanks to careful make-up use which does not overpower your natural face shape and stunning look. As any good beautician will tell you, choosing a make-up style which enhances your natural features, rather than alters them is the key to a head-turning look. Often people choose a style which does not necessarily suit their face shape or hair colour and allow the dress to dictate their make-up style. This can leave you feeling very uncomfortable in your own skin and sadly can make your most striking features appear a little dim. Instead, deciding on a make-up style which complements your face and making small tweaks to ensure a cohesive overall look will help ensure you not only look, but feel your best. If you have an oval-shaped face —consider yourself lucky. Good make-up artists aim to achieve the look of an oval-shaped face. Minimal contouring is needed for this face shape. When it comes to your brows, stick with your natural arch as dramatic or flat eyebrows can detract from your authentic look. If you have a square-shaped face, contouring around the jaw-line and sides of your forehead will soften the sharp angles. Adding definition to your cheekbones and plumping your lips is also another great make-up choice. There’s such a massive variety of bronzers and blushers available, whether you’re looking for something a little softer for some light colouring, or something to really accentuate the contouring you’ve had done. If you consider your face more oblong, use make-up to accentuate your cheekbones and bring out the middle third of the face. Lastly, deciding on a make-up style that matches your hair colour is equally as important.

If you are a red-head, your unique hair colouring should not be overpowered by dramatic make-up. Keep your eyes natural, avoid bold lips and be sure to use a yellow-based foundation. For blondes it can be difficult depending on the varying shades however, people with this hair colouring can be at risk of looking washed out. Soft pinks and beige work a treat as a base colouring and opting for medium brown mascara as opposed to black can help keep your look balanced. Honey shades and rich lip colours perfectly complement the darker hair colours, so don’t be afraid to get creative with them. It’s always a great idea to ask the make-up artist you have for their opinion. It’s great to go into your make-up session with your own ideas, but they generally have the best ideas of what to do in terms of your colouring and getting your make-up to work cohesively with your hair and outfit. There really are so many different looks, but the most important thing is that you’re happy with the way that you look on the night. It’s always a good idea to go and have a make-up trial before your big night, just in case you don’t like the look you’ve chosen or the artist’s style.

PUT SKIN FIRST

Ensure a flawless face with these helpful skincare tips.

ake your skin’s health a priority in the lead up to your formal and you’ll not only decrease your skin’s chances of ruining your day with an acne outbreak, but you’ll increase your skin’s glow. Maintain a routine of cleansing, toning and moisturising your face both morning and night to combat pimples and enrich your skin. Thoroughly remove all traces of make-up before your head hits the pillow at night to rid your skin of all dirt and chemicals and avoid getting it onto your pillowcase. Also keep your hair off your face during the day and at night in bed to prevent the oils in your hair from adding to the oils already in your skin and clogging your pores. Pamper yourself before the formal and combat those pesky pimples with this quick, easy and, best of all, cheap facial. Process six strawberries and mix with a tablespoon of honey, a tablespoon of lemon juice and a tablespoon of brown sugar to create a natural exfoliating mask that tightens the skin and treats acne.

Wipe off with a warm, wet cloth after 10 minutes and enjoy the resulting radiance. Finally, decide whether you want to add to your natural glow with a spray tan. The colour of your dress needs to work well with your skin tone, so this should be the major factor in your decision. For brights, black and pastels, a tan can work wonders; however if your dress is white or yellow be wary —if your tan rubs off it will show up more easily and if it has an orange tinge, it will become obvious when placed next to these colours. If you choose to tan, stick to going just one or two shades darker to avoid looking unnatural.

DRESS TO IMPRESS Dressing for your shape helps to take your look to a new level and ensures comfort

O

ften the latest fashion trends look amazing on models but can look far from spectacular in reality. Trends also come and go, meaning what might be the hottest look now could potentially be laughable in a few years when you look back on your photos (like everything from the 80s). Avoid looking back and cringing at your dress choice by choosing a classic design in a style that is flattering for your shape. Accessories are a great way to modernise an otherwise classic dress and choosing this option as a means of sticking to the latest trends is much safer than doing so with a dress that may be outdated by next season. Petite girls can create the illusion of height by either opting for a shorter dress or a sleek floor-length design, while the voluminous dresses cinched at the waist can help create curves.

If you’re curvy up top, lower necked or V-necked dresses with fitted upper bodies and flowing skirts are a great way to show off your figure. Bottom-heavy or ‘pear-shaped’ women look best in flowing dresses with V-necks or detailing up top to draw attention upward. If you’re curvy and want to showcase your killer figure, a sleek, fitted dress is a good option, while on the other hand, women who lack curves in the upper body should avoid strapless dresses in favour of high necked designs that widen a smaller upper body. Remember that it shouldn’t be a question of whether your dress looks amazing but rather, do you feel amazing in your dress? Forget about the latest crazy trends and find something that will make you feel like a star.
