There’s one thing on our minds this month at Style Magazine….and that is Stepping Out in style! Join us to add a splash of glamour to your winter with the Stepping Out Winter Glamour fashion event. This is a grass roots community event showcasing local models and fashion, raising funds for the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation (p16). July also marks the return of the Opera at Jimbour. With the beloved Katie Noonan at the helm this year as artistic director, we are in for a treat. We chat to Katie (p10) about love, life, music and more. This edition also sadly marks my final one as editor. Style is a magazine dear to my heart, and the many people whose stories we have shared in these pages are what has made my time with Style so special. To all of our beautiful readers, advertisers, contributors and photographers — thank you. Until our paths cross again,

DARLING BRINGS MUSIC TO DOWNS BY LISA MACHIN

T

he Australian newspaper described Katie Noonan’s voice as “like warm honey being decanted into melting snow. It is such a thing of beauty that finding a vessel to hold it can be difficult.” Toowoomba fans were first introduced to her captivating voice through her former band George, which played at The Empire Theatre. Katie Noonan also played as a solo act in Toowoomba for The Carnival of Flowers Food and Wine Festival last year. Now Katie returns to the region in her capacity as artistic director for the Queensland Music Festival, which brings an eclectic range of musical performances and interactive experiences to the state. Held in locations from Toowoomba, Dalby and Warwick through to the northern communities such as Cape York and Mt Isa and western townships of Boonah, Goondiwindi, Cunnamulla, Quilpie, Bedourie, Charleville, Barcaldine and Longreach, as well as coastal towns along the way, it is a huge project to oversee. Hailing from Brisbane, the Darling Downs and Western Downs are parts of the world Katie knows well, with her first Toowoomba gig as a support act for Vanessa Amorosi at The Empire Theatre. Katie’s brother also spent time living in Dalby, and the family – Katie, her brother and their parents – performed at the prestigious biannual event, Opera at

‘OPERA AT JIMBOUR’ WILL BE HELD IN JULY AT JIMBOUR HOUSE

Jimbour, in 2009. Held at Jimbour Homestead on the grand colonial station near Bell the event returns this July. “It’s almost 10,000 people in a paddock in front of this beautiful sandstone homestead, it’s such an awesome event,” Katie says. Opera at Jimbour will be one of the many events Katie co-ordinates in her new role as artistic director, and the heightened professional responsibility is paralleled by a new direction for her music and look also. Gone are the long, red curls audiences knew her for when she was fronting George – replaced with an edgy partially shaved faux-hawk. “It’s so much quicker,” she says of the new style. “Mind you, I never really wore my big hair out. “I do spend more time at the hairdresser but I don’t have to do anything to it now.” Katie’s music has undergone a similar transformation too. She has teamed up with guitarist Karin Schaupp to create a twist on classical and Latin music with the same hauntingly beautiful sound that characterises all Katie Noonan’s work. “My music has changed a lot – I was a young girl becoming a young woman in George so it was very much a documentation of trying to find my way into adulthood,” Katie says. “At my last gig with George I was 27 and pregnant with my first-born boy and about to embark on the next chapter of life as mum and wife. “Now I have Dexter, 10, and Jonah, 12, two amazing boys, and am happily married to my beautiful husband.” Also a musician, Katie’s husband Zac Hurren is accomplished in his own right as both a saxophonist and composer. The pair met at the Brisbane

www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

Conservatorium of Music in 1996. “When I saw him for the first time we both felt this pretty crazy connection and I went home to my housemate and said ‘I think I saw my soulmate today’,” she says. The pair didn’t begin dating until a few years after meeting, but have now chalked up 18 years together and 13 years of marriage, as well as 20 years as bandmates. Both their boys have inherited their parents’ talent for music. “My husband and I moved out of the city when they were born and we have brought them up without TV. They can still watch shows, but television is not a part of our household really,” Katie says. “They are extremely creative souls. “Jonah is soccer mad, Dexter plays guitar, and both play drums well and have beautiful voices.” The family now lives at Eumundi in the Sunshine Coast hinterland and their boys’ privacy is something Katie is mindful of. “We are living in quite a strange time in terms of exposure to the internet. I see the internet as a great thing, but want to protect them from it when they are young and teach them to use it wisely when they are older,” she says. “Dexter is in high school next year so he will get a phone then. “No one has seen pictures of my kids; I’ve protected their right to privacy.” Since taking on the role of artistic director with the Queensland Music Festival, Katie has used her position to shine a light on an important issue in society – that of family and domestic violence. She will be joined on stage by a line-up of stars, as well as event patron Dame Quentin Bryce, domestic and family violence campaigner Rosie Batty, and Allison Baden-Clay’s sister Vanessa Fowler. Katie has spearheaded an anti family and domestic violence campaign by using John Farnham’s iconic song You’re The Voice to rally people everywhere to sing along in an interactive performance. Within 24 hours of launching, 4000 people had registered to sing along to the song, with the message that communities will raise their voices

against family and domestic violence. “The lyrics are perfect because it shows that we as a community are not going to sit in silence on this, and we have John’s blessing to use the song to raise awareness for this important issue,” she says. “Artists have a responsibility to do good with their music in whatever way that may be, whether offering a positive resolution to a difficult subject, or offering hope, or to lead by example. “We can use music as a powerful tool for change and not being afraid to have an opinion that may help shed light and educate on issues that are important is part of that.” The Queensland Music Festival will showcase performances from Cape York to Cunnamulla and “everything in between” at 45 locations. It will showcase seven world premieres, one of which will be hosted by Toowoomba. “As artistic director, it’s my responsibility to shine a light on other amazing musicians,” Katie says. “I was incredibly excited, pretty freaked out. It’s an enormous responsibility to be granted this position.” Toowoomba audiences will have access to performances in Warwick as part of the Jumpers and Jazz Festival as well as Toowoomba and the Opera at Jimbour. “I had really strong visions for what I had in mind – I’m a fiercely strong Queenslander and believe in all forms of self-expression and shining a light on that and empowering Queenslanders to be a part of that,” Katie says. “It is the most inclusive artform; it makes a stranger a friend straight away. “Music is for everyone.”

ARE YOUR 30S THE AGE FOR ‘GROWING UP’?

GABI’S LAST HURRAH FOR STYLE BY HIT FM BREAKFAST HOST GABI ELGOOD

I

where I am, what I’ve achieved so far and what I have left to accomplish before Christmas hits us again. But this year is different because I have just hit the ripe ol’ age of 29.

t’s halfway through the year and I’m left wondering where the months have gone. This happens pretty much every year. I get to July, I stop and I re-evaluate

I know what you’re thinking, “29 isn’t old”, but 29 is only a year away from 30 and I feel like 30 is the age you’re expected to have your life together (or at least be good at pretending you do). Your 20s are for discovering what you want from life and for having fun but then it’s time to grow up when you hit the big 3-0. Because of this I’m making a few changes and unfortunately that means this will be my last article. It makes me sad to put that in writing but life is a changin’ and my responsibility level has risen. I have a mortgage, I have a fur baby and life is getting busier by the minute – so the rare spare time I do have is going to have to be focused on my radio work life. It’s been fun putting my thoughts and stories in print for you but as they say, all good things must come to an end. See you around the streets. xx

travelling the world on glitter BY JESSICA KRAMER

STYLE MAGAZINE CHATS WITH THE PHOTOGRAPHER BEHIND THE WORLDWIDE BODY GLITTER PHENOMENON, JESS ILLICHMANN

“I

could travel the world on glitter.” Jess Illichmann makes this bold statement, sitting opposite me as glitter gently drifts through the air. Better known as alternate portrait photographer Mad Dame, Jess is an eye-catching figure. She insists on wearing her rainbow-coloured unicorn coat as we take her portrait, moving through the room with a naturally energetic step.

“Glitter is something people need,” Jess says. “It gets down into your soul.” Mad Dame is part of a “glitter revolution”, where people cover themselves in glitter for a photoshoot. Toowoomba pin-up models Miss Diamond Divine and Scarlett Noir put the call out for the glitter sensation to come to the Garden City and so, in late May, Jess arrived with glitter and camera in tow.

“It’s really nice to be welcomed for your art,” Jess says. Jess has been synonymous with Mad Dame for more than half her life. The name began back in her mid-teen internet days using MSN Messenger, where her screen name was Madame (insert feeling here). One day the word “Madame” was accidentally split into “Mad Dame” and the rest, as they say, was history. The artist has come to accept that Mad

“I don’t think I know of anyone who travels the world glittering people for a job. MAD DAME, JESS ILLICHMANN

Dame and Jess Illichmann are in some respects one and the same, and to completely absorb herself in the creative process. “You’ve just got to accept it’s come to you,” Jess says about creativity. “It’s chosen me, and I’ve accepted it.” Due to experience, Jess believes glitter can – and does – free or heal people. “You’re drawn in by the prettiness and the sparkliness, but before you know it you’re thrown into this self-love

awakening,” she says, “I’ve watched women heal themselves of their anxiety through these shoots. “I get down to their level and talk to them and distract them and glitter them, and then they feel amazing.” When the clients see their photos, it’s as if they realise how beautiful they truly are, and it gives them a confidence boost. Jess believes part of the beauty of the glitter movement has to do with the recent tearing down of stereotypical

model appearances. “People are realising you don’t need to airbrush, you just put things on like glitter or tattoos and you’re yourself.” The other part Jess loves about her job is helping people celebrate milestones, like one lady who had just finished chemotherapy. Mad Dame’s sparkly journey began back in September 2012 – the beginning of a glitter revolution. Previously, Mad Dame’s portraits had included body paint and body art as well as a little glitter, but nothing to this extent. In order to present it to the world “right”, Mad Dame kept the full-body glitter experience a secret until the release of a special glitter-themed edition of her magazine Damed. “I knew it was going to take off,” Jess says. “It was the first time the Australian market had seen anything like it.”

WINTER GLAMOUR FASHION EVENT EDITOR OF STYLE MAGAZINE, LISA MACHIN

S

tyle Magazine is thrilled to be the media sponsor of this chic, home-grown event showcasing local fashion, local models and the Toowoomba community spirit that makes our city so liveable. Stepping Out Winter Glamour event adds a little magic to Toowoomba’s

busy social calendar this month. It’s a fantastic excuse to dress up in lush faux furs, add a sparkle of jewellery and don those on-trend boots to step out in style. Showcasing the major fashion houses that have been brought to Toowoomba as part of the $500 million Grand Central redevelopment and our wonderful CBD, guests will have plenty to look at on the runway. With models and choreography provided by local stalwart on the

fashion and deportment scene, Kaye Foley, the event is set to raise the bar for winter fashion. Style is proud to support one of the many local events that add to the prestige, innovation and fun of Toowoomba’s social fibre, and we invite you to come along and join us for a night of glitz, glamour and a glass of bubbles. See you by the runway this month! In anticipation, Lisa Machin, Style editor

CHOREOGRAPHER AND CO-ORDINATOR OF STEPPING OUT WINTER GLAMOUR FASHION EVENT, KAYE FOLEY What exciting things do you have planned for the Winter Glamour evening? We have a lot of surprises – we don’t want to give too much away! It’s probably the first event of it’s kind in Toowoomba. It’s something with a difference and we want to make it that way – we want to make it a really exciting evening. It’s going to be so glamorous, so we’re really looking forward to it. How long have you been involved in the modelling industry? I’ve been

18 | July 2017

teaching for 27 years, and I was choreographing parades before that. Why is the Toowoomba fashion and creative scene so exciting at the moment? I think it’s exciting because we have all these brand new labels coming in at the moment that we haven’t experienced before, many of which are involved in the parade. Toowoomba is growing and it’s beautiful. The whole city has a buzz, with so many great cafes and the like. It’s exciting and it’s huge for Toowoomba. Why have you chosen to support the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation? Because it supports

children and it’s a local organisation. I’m all for local – my models are local, trained by the Kaye Foley Model Academy. I don’t get anyone from out of town, so I’m really excited to support the Toowoomba community. It will go back to the local Toowoomba Hospital, so it’s great to know the money will be going to the kids. What’s your winter fashion staple? I love boots! And big coats are a must. Throw on a cute coat and a nice scarf and you can make yourself look a million dollars. There’s a lot of great, creative things out there to put a gorgeous outfit together.

CEO OF TOOWOOMBA HOSPITAL FOUNDATION, ALISON KENNEDY What does the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation offer the Darling Downs region? The Toowoomba Hospital Foundation remains the charity of choice in the Darling Downs region supporting our hospitals — Toowoomba Hospital, Baillie Henderson Hospital and Mt Lofty Heights Nursing Home. We are a community organisation at heart, staying connected to our region through a number of events, large and small, that we host throughout the year. Our fundraising efforts allow us to buy life-saving equipment and resources which significantly impact the lives of our patients and their families. Often this equipment means that local families do not need to travel, or travel as far, for treatment and instead can stay local with their loved ones.

What sort of other events does the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation get involved with? The Toowoomba Hospital Foundation is involved with a number of events throughout the year keeping us well connected with the community. We run a number of Toowoomba Hospital Foundation events which include our very popular Women of Strength event, the Ladies Diamond Luncheon, our Melbourne Cup Luncheon and community events including the Zombie Walk, Teddy Bears’ Picnic and our Heroes and Villains Run/Walk. We are also very privileged to be buoyed by strong support from local community groups and businesses who host events in support of the foundation. We refer to these as our “working with our mates” events. These include lunches, golf days and special fundraising events which support the foundation and make what we do possible.

What are the funds going towards from the evening? The funds raised at the Stepping Out Winter Glamour Fashion Event will go towards supporting children’s health at the Toowoomba Hospital. We know that every dollar counts and can make a big difference in the lives of sick kids and their families

What are you most looking forward to on the night? As a community-based organisation one of the things we are very lucky to witness on a daily basis is seeing the community band together and get behind a great cause. I can’t wait to see the Stepping Out Winter Glamour Fashion event come

who visit the hospital.

to life as we as a community work together to help our sick kids. There really is nothing like seeing people get together to make a difference. Of course, I am also looking forward to seeing all of the wonderful fashion on offer from the fashion houses that are getting involved in this event. What do you love about living and working in Toowoomba? There is such a wonderful vibe around Toowoomba at present and with the amount of new cafes and restaurants popping up it seems everyone is rejoicing with the activity in our region. BUY YOUR I love the TICKETS AT glorious WWW. weather and TRY BOOKING. the four COM/QLGO seasons we get to experience and the pride we take in keeping our city so clean and picturesque. The opportunities for young people to stay and raise a family is so evident in the organisations we get to work with and our community of course is one of the most generous I have ever had the pleasure of being a part of. We have felt very welcome in Toowoomba from the moment we set foot in this wonderful piece of paradise we call home.

THERE REALLY IS NOTHING LIKE SEEING PEOPLE GET TOGETHER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

MODEL FOR STEPPING OUT WINTER GLAMOUR FASHION EVENT, GABRIELLE SULEY How long have you been modelling? I’ve been modelling now for roughly about three years. What are you most looking forward to on the Winter Glamour evening? I’m really looking forward to all the unique styles that each shop comes up with — when we went to try some outfits on they were all so

diverse and exclusive. How have you found all the gorgeous local fashion from the show? So far I haven’t been disappointed. Toowoomba is growing rapidly and I feel like now there is a store that caters for everyone’s fashion sense. Why is Toowoomba a great place to be creative? Because Toowoomba is a large country town, we don’t have the pressure of “big city” culture, therefore we have the time and the

space to allow our creativity to develop and grow. As a whole community I believe we are really supportive of each and everyone’s ideas and that’s why it’s so great. What makes a great model? Being able to be yourself and comfortable around a camera. What four things do you always have in your bag when you go to a photoshoot? Definitely a face scarf, lipstick or gloss, face powder and deodorant.

hile facelift surgery can tighten your lower face, reduce sagging jowls and restore a more defined jawline, it does this by surgically removing excess skin. For those who don’t want scars and a general anaesthetic or who don’t yet need such drastic measures, there are less invasive options. Volume in cheeks can be restored by injecting volumising fillers into the deflated fat pads. The results are instant and last up to two years. Thread-lifting can lift and tighten a sagging forehead, face and neck. This is a slightly invasive procedure, but there are no residual scars. Skin tightening procedures using ultrasound (Ulthera) and radiofrequency (Sublime and Thermage) generally have no or minimal downtime. The effects are instant and continue to improve over the following months. Come and see The Bradford Clinic at suite 2, Clifford Place, 25 Isabel St to discuss your treatments. 20 | July 2017

O

n Tuesday, June 6, 2017, the Fair Work Commission announced more than 2.3 million Australians are set to receive a wage increase of 3.3% this year. While many consider it to be a step in the right direction, some are outraged by the decision, claiming the change is simply not enough to support low-income earners. On the other side of the debate, many prominent business groups have stated their displeasure with the increase stating that it is ‘unnecessarily high’ and that it will ‘lead to further disincentives for businesses to employ’. Once the changes take effect, Australia will be ranked as the second-highest minimum wage paying nation in the developed world – with the new national minimum wage now reaching a total of $694.90 per week or $18.29 per hour. R

ecycling is the new buzzword as we have seen an increase in creating bespoke jewellery out of inherited, unwanted or broken jewels. Alongside the financial incentive, the other reason for recycling your old gold and gems instead of buying new is sentiment. There is nothing sadder than jewels locked in a safe or put away in a drawer because they don’t suit the client’s style or if they are damaged beyond repair. The unique nature of each client’s original materials, and how clear a vision they have of their reworked piece, generally shapes the design process. We draft some sketches and, if necessary, source some additional stones before drawing to scale the new proposed creation. If there are materials that cannot be used or which may be left over, we can add it as a credit to go towards the client’s new piece. WINTER WARDROBE STAPLES D

on’t let your taste in clothing go out the window now the cold is here. Trends this autumn and winter in Europe include graphic black and white, hard-hitting punk, folksy tribal, military styling and an 80s comeback style. While these trends may be hitting the right note for the fashionistas out there, timeless elegance and style are all the rage for the more mature woman. Women’s clothing styles are more diverse and accepting of individual preferences than ever. No longer does a narrow group of top designers dictate how to dress. By looking past the young models’ svelte bodies, you will find an increasing

selection of fashions fit for the more mature woman. The lament “there aren’t any nice clothes for older women’” is as out-of-date as the phone booth.

HERE ARE SOME CLOTHING STAPLES TO KEEP YOUR WARDROBE WONDERFUL:

◆ A long coat: It sounds obvious, but don’t skimp on a quality coat – you will get a lot of wear out of it. Keep it in a neutral colour such as black, grey or camel, and dress it up with different waist belts to make it look like a new outfit. ◆ Beautiful boots: Whether they’re knee high, above the knee or ankle boots, get yourself a pair of boots to keep your feet toasty warm and stylish at the same time. Good-quality leather will last the distance and, if taken care of, will last years. ◆ Scarves: These are a wonderful and quite cheap way to dress up and differentiate an outfit.

There are so many different types of scarves; if you get one big enough, it can double as a cape that can be thrown over your shoulder. ◆ Love your layers: Layers are a wonderful way to fashion your winter woollies. Probably the most practical of winter fashion trends, putting a long top under a sweater, under a jacket will look exceptional and keep you warm in the cool months. Also, don’t hesitate to put on tights or sheer stockings under a pair of pants. No one will know they’re there, but they’ll certainly make a difference. ◆ Wool dress: This little number can be versatile over the cooler months. You can pop some tights on underneath the dress and layer with a big jacket over the top or slip some heels on for a cute date night outfit. Alternatively, a nice wool dress can be an effortless addition to your work wardrobe. Make sure you find a nice thick dress. This quality fashion staple will last years if taken care of properly.

hen you start looking at the different shapes of diamonds then selecting a diamond gets really exciting. But where to start? Ultimately it’s about personal taste, however there are some factors worth keeping in mind… Round brilliant. It’s believed 75% of all diamonds sold are round brilliants which reflect the most light of all cuts thus an extra bright effect. Classic and timeless.

The diamond should be worn with the pointed end directed at its wearer. Pears have an elegant and slimming effect on the wearer’s finger. Marquise derives its name from the Marquise of Pompadour. It is believed that King Louis XIV of France had a stone cut to resemble her perfectly shaped mouth. These diamonds are long and narrow.

Princess cut diamonds are the second most popular diamond shape. Square in shape they are best set with prongs to protect its delicate corners. Oval were created in the 1960s and provide an illusion of greater size thanks to their elongated shape which helps to lengthen the finger.

ith the winter months now well and truly upon us, there is no better time to clean out that medicine cabinet and review the medicine you and your family take. Do you have medication you’re no longer prescribed? Do you have medication ‘just in case’? Do you have out-of-date medication? Removing out-of-date and unwanted medications can avoid confusion, prevent mistakes and makes your home a safer place. Unwanted medicines are often thrown out with the rubbish, tipped down the sink or into the toilet. However, this starts a problem that can harm the environment we live in. It is time to review your medicine cabinet by checking expiry dates and bringing any unwanted or out-of-date medications into your local Priceline Pharmacy for correct medication disposal. Did you know that only 65 per cent of Australians take their medicines as prescribed by their doctor? Do you take your medicines prescribed to you by your doctor 100% of the time? Do you miss doses? Do you forget to get your prescription refilled before you run out?

If you find yourself answering yes to these questions, Priceline Pharmacy can help you. With Australians living busy lifestyles, being a member of our Priceline Pharmacy Health Plus program is the answer.

DISPOSE OF OLD MEDICATION PROPERLY AT PRICELINE PHARMACY Members can access free medication reviews to help manage their medications, their prescriptions can be left safely with the pharmacist, they receive free SMS reminders so they never forget to get their script refilled, and their script will be ready when they arrive in store. They also receive priority bookings for health checks and flu clinics. Another service offered to you by Priceline Pharmacy is having your medication packaged into a dose administration aid such as a Webster pack. EXFOLIATION 101 In winter, the weather is cold and the humidity is low, which means the water in your skin evaporates faster, resulting in dry, tight and sometimes flaky skin. Additionally, most of us are turning the heaters up and getting closer to the toasty fire, increasing that evaporation rate. The skin naturally sheds the outer superficial dead layers of skin, however in winter with moisture essentially being sucked out those dead layers compact and stay put. What this means is that no matter how much moisturiser and oil you slather on, it will not absorb.

EXFOLIATE

Exfoliation is removing those dead skin cells to allow serums and moisturiser to be delivered into the skin. The skin naturally exfoliates or sheds the dead skin cells, however there are a lot of contributing factors that can slow down that process. Examples are aging, environmental factors, pollution, diet and lifestyle, genetics, skin care regime — all of these can result in dull, lack lustre skin. Exfoliation brings back that healthy glow and can also reduce the appearance of pores. There are physical exfoliants that will ‘buff ’ the dead skin cells off such as scrubs, loofahs and exfoliating towels. There are chemical exfoliants, these have active ingredients that will dissolve the dead skin cells and provides a deeper result. Depending on your skin type and product, exfoliate two to three times per week on average. I like to consult with my client and tailor a skin treatment journey to their skin concerns and to suit their lifestyle. Cheree Connolly, Stella Skin and Beauty

WINTER HAIR CARE BY ELLIE HUGHES

D

uring the winter months hair needs extra attention to attain a healthy appearance and without proper care, it can look limp and dull. These three hair care pointers will show you how to easily maintain hair quality.

WASHING

◆ In winter, you need to change your hair washing routine. ◆ Less washes prevents hair drying out and avoiding hot water allows it to retain natural oils. ◆ Focus on the ends as they’re the oldest and most damaged part of the hair. ◆ Finish your wash with cold water to trap moisture.

DEEP CONDITIONING

◆ During winter you should be deep conditioning at least once a week. ◆ Ensure your hair is clean before you start or it won’t be as effective. ◆ Using deep conditioners that contain olive, avocado and coconut oils are

recommended for enhanced results. ◆ Warmth also shows improvement, so cover hair with a shower cap or something similar then apply heat. ◆ The best amount of time to leave a deep conditioner is 30 minutes or more. ◆ To finish, rinse your hair with cold water to seal the moisture.

DRYING

◆ Drying your hair in winter is crucial. ◆ You may not know this but you should never leave the house with wet hair in winter, because of the damage it does. ◆ Putting your hair up while it’s damp is also a mistake, as it causes split ends, dandruff and breakage. ◆ Squeezing water from hair gently

then using a cool blow dryer is the best solution. ◆ Do not rub with a towel, as this causes friction damage, and keep warm blow-dryers to a 15 centimetre distance.

TOP TIPS FROM NAPOLEON PERDIS Australian cosmetics expert Napoleon Perdis shares some advice for getting make-up to work for you

LONG-LASTING MAKE-UP

“Not to prime is a crime,” Napoleon says. “No matter what your skin type is, there is a primer for you. “It creates a barrier on top of your skin that stops your skin from absorbing your make-up and is the easiest way to keep your skin looking hydrated, smooth and perfected all day/night long.”

WHICH COLOURS SUIT WHICH EYE COLOUR?

“To make your eyes pop, opt for a complimentary colour,” Napoleon says. “On the colour wheel, shades that sit opposite from each other will bring each other out. “Find a hue that your eye colour stems from and choose shades with the

opposite, underlying colour.” ◆ Blue eyes - try warmer tones in bronze, copper, brown, peach and pink. ◆ Green eyes - look fantastic in shades of plum, purple, red-browns and coppers. ◆ Brown eyes - should embrace their fun side with blues, purple and greens. ◆ Hazel eyes - are very lucky as many shades look amazing; try purple, green, coppers and plum.

HOW IMPORTANT ARE BROWS?

“If the eyes are the windows to the soul, it’s the brows that frame them,” Napoleon says. “Groomed brows make the face feel more youthful and polished and when done first can also mean you might not

need to apply as much make-up as your look will feel more complete.”

BEST COLOURS FOR HIGHLIGHTING?

Napoleon says warmer shades with a golden/copper tone were perfect to use as a highlighter and the made the skin look radiant and glowing. “Avoid anything with a silver reflection, opt for gold, copper and bronze instead, also avoid highlighters that have a pink or white base.” Find more at napoleonperdis.com.au.

Begin by applying an eye primer to the eyelids. Set this primer by applying a nude eyeshadow to the eyelid, working it up under the brow bone. Then, use a fluffy brush to blend a taupe eyeshadow into the crease of the eye and on the lower lash line. This will be your transition shade. Take a darker shade of eyeshadow and with a smaller blending brush apply it to the outer corner of the eye and on the lower lash line. Keep building up this colour to increase intensity and darkness. Remember, it’s easier to add more colour than to take it away. To finish, use a clean blending brush to diffuse the edges of the darker shade into the taupe.

coloured eyeshadow to create a smoky eye. STEP 2. Line your upper lashline with a black waterproof eyeliner. STEP 3. Pat a coloured eyeshadow shadow starting at the inner corner of eye and move back towards the centre of the eye. Use a clean, fluffy eyeshadow brush to blend the colour seamlessly into your neutral eyeshadow.

COLOURED MASCARA

Try one of the biggest make-up trends – coloured mascara. Find shades that will complement your

eye colour to create a very subtle statement without looking overdone. Purple, green, navy and burgundy are great neutral choices and pair well with most eye colours. Otherwise try a pink or yellow shade to go bold and stand out.

COLOURED EYELINER

Most of us tend to favour black eyeliner, but a coloured liner could be exactly what you need to make an easy, glam statement. Coloured liner has become a real way to change up your everyday make-up look.

A DREAM MADE IN THE LUCKY COUNTRY PEDIATRICIANS DR LEANNE BROWNING AND DR SHAILJA SINGH HAVE STARTED LITTLE SPROUTS PEDIATRICS AT ST VINCENT'S PRIVATE HOSPITAL

T

oowoomba paediatrician Dr Shailja Singh considers herself a lucky woman. After years of study and full-time work while also starting a family, she has fulfilled her dream to open her own private specialist paediatric practice. Shailja has joined friend and colleague Dr Leanne Browning to start Little Sprouts Paediatrics and their aim is to provide children from the Darling Downs and surrounding region with holistic care and services that

complement the care families receive from their local doctors and GPs. Originally from Fiji, Shailja moved to Toowoomba in 2002 to begin work as a paediatric registrar at the Toowoomba Base Hospital. While she had already gained extensive adult medicine and obstetric experience in the largest hospital in Suva her dream was to be a paediatrician and a phone call from Australia started her on the long journey to fulfil that dream. “I think I am the luckiest person. I was really interested in furthering my studies so I applied for a registrar position at the Toowoomba Hospital,” Shailja recalls. “Dr John Coghlan was the head of paediatrics at the time and because I was in Fiji, he did a phone interview — he offered me the position based on that phone interview. “Looking back, he took a gamble but it was a good gamble because I have been working in paediatrics ever since I landed in Australia.” Shailja said she became a familiar face at the Toowoomba Hospital, and was fondly known as “the yoyo” by the Toowoomba Hospital staff because she kept bouncing back for short periods to work in the unit while she had her family. She admits she sometimes found it hard to juggle all her competing priorities. “I had to complete all the requirements to receive general registration as a practitioner in Australia and then I completed six years of paediatric training working between

the Royal Children’s Hospital Brisbane, Rockhampton Hospital, Toowoomba Hospital and Lady Cilento Children’s Hospitals,” Shailja says. “I also completed a Master in Public Health and Tropical Medicine and had two children during this period. “I guess it is no wonder Ravin, my husband of 20 years, and my 17 and 12-year-old daughters think I am a workaholic.” Shailja says her passion drives her. “I was given an opportunity to fulfil a dream and I wanted to make the best of it,” she says. “Paediatrics is my utopia — I absolutely love everything about paediatrics. “I love the challenges each child brings, I love the cry of a newborn and the tears of joy from an exhausted mum and overawed dad.” Shailja finds a huge reward when a sick child makes a recovery. “I love the stick figure drawings and scribbles the children give me. “I love that I can listen to and help a mum who has just shared her concerns and I feel so privileged when a teenager walks back into a consultation so that they can talk to me in private. “These moments are equally provoking and humbling — every moment is an etching.” With her dream now a reality, Shailja’s hard work and perseverance have earned her the respect of her colleagues, hospital staff and the families she cares for. When asked what’s next, Shailja says one day she would love to return to Fiji to work.

LET’S GET READY TO UPGRADE YOUR COMFORT ZONE BY SUE WATSON, EFM HEALTH CLUB

o we are now in the middle of winter and the slow cooker has been going non-stop for the past six weeks. The lounge, a good book or movie with the blanket seems a much better option that going out for a brisk walk or to the gym. If you haven’t already heard the expression “summer bodies are made in winter” then you have now and it is so true. So, why not use doona season to set yourself some goals and start looking at fitness centres offering 12-week challenges and get your body looking it’s spring best. Instead of feeling miserable about these winter months, think of it as your pre-season training. No matter what your fitness level or how frantic your lifestyle is, there is a

12-week plan out there to suit your lifestyle. The benefits far outweigh the negatives with body tone all over, more energy, improving your fitness and feeling fantastic, even on those short dark days.

HERE ARE FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU GET STARTED.

◆ Make it easy for yourself — spend Sunday cooking a few healthy staples for your week, pack your gym bag the night before and have it by the door. ◆ Break your goals down — losing 30kg might seem like an overwhelming task, so break it down into weekly manageable goals. Avoid fad diets and overly intense workouts that can be unsustainable.

◆ Action, not outcomes should be your focus — don’t fixate on a number on the scales or a dress size but rather the small changes like having a salad with your meal or drinking a glass of water with each meal. These are more tangible actions that lead to a healthier and happier you. ◆ Make it fun — try a class you’ve heard about, a bootcamp with friends or mix things up on the gym floor with adding equipment such as a BOSU or TRX. ◆ Give yourself a break — rest and replenish the body. Try a yoga class or just take a walk with the family or the dog. As long as you are eating a balanced meal most days of the week, allow yourself a small indulgence without feeling guilty.

WORK EXPERIENCE AT THE CHRONICLE BY ELLIE HUGHES

Student Ellie Hughes shares her first-hand experience

A

ELLIE HUGHES, WORK EXPERIENCE STUDENT

s a Year 10 student at The Glennie School, I’ve spent the last week in ‘the real world’ doing work experience with The Chronicle. I can honestly say this has been one of the highlights of my term, if not the year so far. I’ve learned so much more in these five days than I could have imagined, jumping between the different areas and taking in as much as I could. One of the things that surprised me most was the feeling of community that I saw here. The open plan office, happy environment and the way everyone worked together was a change from the idea of impersonal offices that we have seen in the past. I came in having no idea what to expect, besides the thought that I would be doing a lot of observing.

Instead I was thrown in the deep end, getting first-hand experience of writing in the industry and learning new styles we haven’t been taught in school. My passion in life is writing, and my time here has given me personal insight into what it might be like to work in a career where I could do that, for which I am very grateful.

MID-YEAR SCHOOL MOTIVATION BY ELLIE HUGHES

A

fter half a year of studying already it can be hard to find the drive to keep doing well in school for the rest of the year. To help combat your study apathy here are three of the easiest ways to find some motivation.

simplest way to find your inspiration for whatever you’re doing. Appropriately picked music incites positive emotions, so find the songs that motivate you most and listen to them while you’re studying or preparing yourself for school.

SET GOALS

Setting goals for yourself gives you a focus and a point to strive towards. It’s much easier to find motivation when you know what you want to do, rather than floundering towards nothing. Make lists about what you want, how you’re going to achieve it and reward yourself when you accomplish your goals.

GET WALKING IN WINTER UPCYCLE OR FREECYCLE? Have you heard of the winter blues? This is also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which can cause overeating, lethargy and inactivity, and lower your mood. These symptoms are also risk factors for heart disease, which means keeping active in winter is all the more important. Queensland state coordinator for Heart Foundation Walking Anna Campbell said being active on a regular basis is important for maintaining both good physical and mental well-being. “Winter can be hard to get motivated to head outdoors, but knowing you can keep track of your walks either in a group or as a virtual walker, or both, is motivation enough for most people to put on their shoes and get walking,” Anna said. It’s free to join Heart Foundation Walking. To join the 24,000 Australians who have already discovered Heart Foundation Walking, register online at walking.heartfoundation.org.au or call 1300 36 27 87.

We all recycle in some way — throw our cardboard, bottles and cans in the right coloured bin to have them come back again as more cardboard, a new bottle or another can. But do you upcycle or freecycle? Upcycling is essentially repurposing what was an unwanted item into something useful, practical, beautiful, or all three. Freecycling is based on passing on instead of throwing out. Freecycling eliminates goods ever suffering the ignominy of being rubbish, charity or a hand-me-down — items are passed on, re-used and re-loved. Freecycling and upcycling are creative, enjoyable and satisfying pursuits that also connect and build a community. Next time you head to the bin to throw something out stop, look at it again, think about what else it could be, or who else may want it.

WHAT ARE THE KEYS TO HEALTH AND HAPPINESS? F

or most, the list would include a healthy diet, regular exercise, a good night’s sleep and loved ones with whom to share their lives. Studies have shown also that time spent pursuing hobbies and personal passions is essential for a well-rounded and satisfying life and to keep the mind sharp, body strong and spirits high. There are many options for us to partake in the creative arts. Art hobbies, whether sketching, painting, acting, sculpting or taking photographs, can be for individual enjoyment, gift giving or even fundraising purposes. We’ve seen across many Palm Lake Resorts how shared creative endeavours (knitting teddy bears for donation to hospitals, crocheting poppy flowers for Anzac Day etc) have brought residents together for the benefits of others. Other hobbies that residents share include spending time playing games or working on puzzles with family and friends.

Working on puzzles also keeps the mind sharp and alert. Traditional games like bingo and bridge are already popular in our resorts but don’t forget those nostalgic board games that continue to challenge the mind. Social hobbies are fantastic because they open doors for us to build friendships and it’s important to keep social skills sharp as this benefits us in many other aspects of life. Having a wholesome laugh with others and sharing enjoyable activities keeps people actively engaged in life. This is one of the best aspects of community lifestyle living at Palm Lake Resort – the “community”. Outdoor hobbies are a fantastic way to get some much-needed Vitamin D and fresh air. Beneficial outdoor activities can be as straightforward as regular walks around the resort. Stretching and tai chi are also beneficial (to improve flexibility and

mobility) and can be more enjoyable in the outdoors on a fine, sunny day. There are so many great hobbies available for Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba Pinnacle residents to throw themselves and their time into. And remember, partaking in activities that are loved and enjoyed can help delay signs of mental and physical aging. EAT YOUR WAY TO A BETTER BRAIN I

t seems hardly a day goes by without being bombarded with new advice about what to eat, what not to and the next big thing sure to keep us healthy. Years of nutritional research have revealed our choice of foods influences our memory, general cognitive skills, mood and mental well-being. Getting it right is important to boost focus and thinking at all ages. Brain Fitness Doctor and author of Future Brain: The 12 Keys to Create Your High Performance Brain, Dr Jenny Brockis shares her tips on eating to improve your brain function. The top contenders for boosting focus, memory and better cognition are the Mediterranean and MIND diet. Have you considered the Mediterranean style of eating? Leafy greens, cold water oily fish such as salmon or mackerel or lean protein, deeply pigmented berries such as blueberries and strawberries, some seeds and nuts, some whole grains, a good dollop of olive oil, a small glass of

red wine and you are good to go. Beyond the waters of the Med, the new kid on the dietary block is the MIND diet. What’s particularly exciting here is that this way of eating that is similar to the Mediterranean diet has been associated with a 35% lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease. It incorporates all those foods shown by the research to be good for the brain and it’s easy to follow.

BRAIN-FRIENDLY FOODS

Go green: Mum was right – six servings a week of leafy green vegetables such as spinach, kale and Asian and salad greens. More vegies: Include a wide variety of different coloured vegies on your plate – at least one every day – capsicum, carrots, eggplant, squash – your choice.

Go nuts: Previously maligned for being guilty of causing weight gain – nuts are packed with good fats and vitamins. Five serves a week, (that’s five small handfuls) is all that’s required. Berry delightful: Two or more serves a week of blueberries, strawberries, blackberries or cherries to pack a powerful anti-oxidant punch. Beans: Lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans or baked beans – three times a week. Whole grains: For those not allergic or celiac, three servings a day. Go fish: Naturally, fish would have to be included for the omega-3 content – once a week. Too easy! Meat: Eat chicken or turkey twice a week. Olive oil: Extra virgin for your salads and cooking. Wine: One glass a day (that’s 125ml).

THE LUCKY PAIR BY ELLIE HUGHES

L

uck seems to be always on the side of Athena Inocentes and Andrew Backhouse in their relationship, as they pull off impressive feats like avoiding a 90 per cent chance of rain on their wedding day. The couple met at the University of Southern Queensland and their relationship has been filled with similar lucky occurrences up to their wedding day on January 14 this year. They were together three years before their marriage, but Andrew says it was only three weeks into dating that he knew Athena was ‘the one’. “I got down on one knee and surprised her with a ring,” Andrew says. “When she got over her shock, she said yes.”

ANDREW AND ATHENA ENJOYED THEIR WEDDING WITHOUT A HITCH

They are fortunate to have found each other in this wide world, and to have gone on to be happily married. The finest example of their good luck is their wedding day, that went off without a hitch. The outdoor wedding day was filled with family and friends and ended up being a heatwave despite the unfortunate predictions for rain. The couple’s reception was done in a classical style at All Seasons Function Centre and the bride wore a lovely handmade dress from the Philippines. Their wedding rings were custom-made with each other’s names engraved, and they wrote their own vows for the personal touch. The highlight of the pair’s evening

‘‘

I got down on one knee and surprised her with a ring ... When she got over her shock, she said yes. was the money dance, which is a wedding tradition in the Philippines, in which the couple danced and the guests pinned money to their clothing. All the details of the wedding came together for a wonderful event, due to meticulous planning and surely a little of their special luck.

IMPROVING THE GOLF GAME BY IAIN CURRY

T

HE Volkswagen Golf has been a phenomenal success story in the over-40 years it has graced the showrooms. We’re currently on the 7th generation of VW Golf, but the brand always strives to improve the model. This month an update called the Golf 7.5 will arrive in Australia, and by next January, when the line-up is complete, there’ll be no less than 22 variants to choose from. The Golf 7.5 range starts with the 110TSI hatchback with manual gearbox, yours for a very reasonable $23,990 before on-road costs. For the money you get 16-inch alloy wheels, reversing camera, an 8-inch audio screen, desirable Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, cruise control and a city emergency braking system to prevent low-speed accidents. It’s a generous specification list from entry level, but your Golf can get

far sexier. At the opposite end of the spectrum are the GTIs, kicking off from $41,490 for the conventional hatch with six-speed manual. The truly sporting Golf buyer can splash out $52,990 for an all-wheel-drive Golf R complete with a 213kW 2.0-litre turbo engine. The Golf R Wagon is making a return too, as are special edition Wolfsburg editions of both the Golf R hatch and Golf R Wagon. The latter is the priciest Golf you can buy at $59,990 before costs, but such is its incredible performance and generous inclusions it is still something of a bargain. Performance lovers with a thing for nostalgia will also appreciate VW once again offering a three-door version of the Golf GTI to Australia. Called the Performance Edition 1, we’ll receive a limited run of 150 of these hot hatches, each costing $47,990.

VITAL STATISTICS

Model: Volkswagen Golf 7.5 110 TSI Details: Five-door front-wheel drive small hatchback Engine: 1.4-litre turbocharged four cylinder with 110kW and 250Nm Transmission: 7-speed dual-clutch auto or six-speed manual Fuel economy: 5.4-litres/100km Bottom line: From $23,990

For the less performance orientated buyer, there are the usual different grades of hatchback and wagon, plus the all-wheel-drive Alltrack Golfs. Spoilt for choice? It’s the only way to truly be the car of the people.

COLOUR ME HAPPY A

s the cooler winter months make their presence known things around the house can appear a bit plain, but that certainly should not be a reflection of the way you have to feel. There are a whole heap of easy ways to make your home a warm and bright place this winter, even if you’re working to a budget. Whether you’re looking to jazz up the bedroom, lounge room, living area or the kitchen, there are a lot of options to make your winter a little sunnier in the home. An easy option is buying a colourful throw to put over the back of the couch or the bottom of the bed. Not just a simple internal brick wall — this is a solid concrete ‘heat bank’ wall absorbing warmth during Winter.

Let’s build energy efficiency in right from the start ~ and cut ongoing costs.

W

ith your plans starting to take shape, it is now time to consider some really important issues that will have a huge bearing on the overall energy efficiency of your greatest asset, and its ongoing energy costs. A very good web site to visit is www.nathers.gov.au. This site will give you an easy-to-understand outline on what energy efficiency is and how to achieve it. NAThers is the programme designed by the CSRIO that is used to calculate the Energy Rating on your new home using a Star rating system. By law, all new homes in Queensland must achieve a 6 Star energy rating as a minimum. To achieve this, some designers simply put a fan in the outdoor area or PV cells on the roof — both of which equate to a one star bonus. Hardly genius, and seriously, they must think their customers are dills. If so, it means the best your home will actually achieve is a 5 Star rating, if that. Not much comfort if your goal is to save ongoing costs for heating and cooling.

You’ve got insulation? Are you sure? Correct insulation and its placement is vital. You only get one chance to put insulation in the walls — at the frame stage. Check your builder has allowed for the right kind of insulation to be fitted in all external walls. While talking to your builder, check what type of foundations, built-in termite protection and termite-resistant materials your frame will be made from. It’s important. Even better is to do all this checking much earlier, at the quoting stage, because building quotes without the all-important insulation will appear deceptively cheaper. Meaning you’ll pay, and pay, and pay for it later.

Some solutions are easy and simple Simple things like putting insulation in the internal walls of your garage will stop

motor vehicle heat being transferred through them, as well as western Summer sun. Breeze and weather seals on all external doors will also have a large impact on heat loss and gain, yet are so cheap, simple and easy.

Thermal Mass ~ the Holy Grail The thermal mass of a home is generally the concrete slab the home is sitting on, because of the density of concrete. It readily absorbs heat and slowly releases it, helping to keep your home’s temperature more evenly balanced. TIME FOR A MAKEOVER? BY ELLIE HUGHES

A new season is a great opportunity to revamp your home. Here are some tips to freshen up various places in your abode.

BEDROOM

◆ Ensure there is enough storage – this reduces clutter for a better feel. ◆ The bedroom is a personal space, use colours that you like. ◆ Linen and pillows are important design features – match the colour pattern. ◆ Incorporate headboards and feature walls. The bedroom is a space specific to its owner, meaning it should have the most personalised feel in the house. Use colours that you like here and decorate mainly with throws, pillows and an original headboard or feature wall as a focus.

BATHROOM

they need special consideration. Large tiles and soft edges are increasing in popularity, overruling angular shapes and small tiles. However, using small mosaic type tiles in smaller spaces can be an easy way to create variety.

PLAY ROOM

◆ Storage is key – simple style is best to be able to change with a child’s interest. ◆ Either use pale pastel tones to calm children or bright colours for stimulation. ◆ Colour in play rooms can vary from normal house colours. ◆ Windows and natural light are important. A play room is a place for kids, and its design should reflect this. The colour scheme doesn’t need to match other rooms in the house. Simple storage is best here and a focus on natural lighting is important.

KITCHEN

◆ Storage – deep drawers and shelves for display.

◆ Bars/islands are very popular and functional. ◆ Darker colours are good – grey, charcoal and navy especially. ◆ Timber and white contrast well. ◆ High-gloss finishes make small spaces look bigger. ◆ Matte finishes are trending for cabinets. Kitchens are best done in dark colours like navy with timber or white for contrast. Including islands in a design adds functionality and style.

LIVING ROOM

LIGHTING

◆ Storage is important – leaving things lying around creates clutter. ◆ TV placement is important – it’s best to have it wall-mounted and away from windows. ◆ Rugs are a key design feature in living rooms – make them large to create balance and make a room feel larger Rugs can be a great centre of a living room. Size is everything here, because large

Kitchens are best done in dark colours like navy with timber or white for contrast.

◆ Understand the purpose of the lights – lighting styles change depending on what they are needed for. ◆ Direct lighting is focused on work space, indirect is for ambience and overall lighting of a space. Kitchens need direct lighting, bedrooms and bathrooms can have softer lighting ◆ Remember natural light from windows. ◆ Pendant lights are very in fashion. ◆ Use several points to light one room.

IN THE THEATRE

BE TAKEN AWAY WITH THE QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA: SWEET NIGHT MUSIC

by Jane Bray WHEN I heard the words “Sweet Night Music” I automatically thought lullaby, jewellery boxes and nursery rhymes — but add a live orchestra and magic happens. You could feel the anticipation when the concert master bowed before he took his place as the lead first violinist. Then the lights dimmed, the room quietened and entered conductor Daniel Kossov, relaxed and radiating confidence to lead the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. When he raised that baton and that first string was plucked I was so grateful to be among the audience, enchanted by the sound. We were entertained by Australian comedian and host Ian McFadyen between sets, bewildered by flutist Hayley Radke’s nimble fingers, serenaded by the lovely soprano Morgan England-Jones and surprised by five Toowoomba student prodigies joining in on one piece. A hilarious host, animated conductor fascinating to watch and talented musicians made it worth attending.

A GREAT WINTER READ A PURE DROP: LIFE AND TIMES OF JEFF BUCKLEY BY JEFF APTER

by Debbie Phillips JEFF Buckley has been likened to a pure drop in an ocean of noise. This is a very fitting analogy of an artist who wrote and sang way beyond his mere 30 years. He simply had a voice that could cut through a room and leave you breathless, wanting more. A vagabond, gypsy and loner, his life ended suddenly late one night in the lead-up to his second album when he went for a swim in the Mississippi River. His body was found the next day. This was, for me, the day the music died. This biography is a tale of wonder. Jeff Buckley was destined to be a superstar. He had the good looks and the charisma, but most of all the talent from his father, the folk/blues legend Tim Buckley whose Greetings from LA is a collector’s gem. It could be said music ran in Jeff Buckley’s blood. His career was brief but not less important. His first release Grace left the music world spellbound. This book is a wonderful insight into a man who let few people get close to him but those who did knew they were in the presence of greatness.

FRESH SOUNDS OFF THE GRID BY BLISS N ESO

by Debbie Phillips It has been four long years since the last release from this talented hip hop crew. They continue to impress with each album and Off the Grid is no exception. Maturity of song-writing casts off the layers of youth in this release, bringing experience and depth to the fore. First released off the album as a single, the song Dopamine caught a lot of die-hard fans by surprise — concerned the guys had mellowed a little too much. However, once you listen to the lyrics and get their direction, it is an amazing track. Granted this album is a little different from Circus in The Sky, but then again would we appreciate a band that didn’t grow as artists?

Style Artist Erin Rayner chats to Style

Describe your style? I use a monochrome style, paired with fine lines and details to create intricate drawings. My pieces are heavily influenced by nature. They are very simplistic, often focussing on botanical elements with subtle geometric qualities. When did you start painting/drawing? I have been drawing and creating since before I can remember. It was when I was in high school that I started to take a more serious interest and began exploring different mediums to find a style that I enjoyed. How has it evolved and what has influenced this? Initially I enjoyed using watercolours but progressed to black ink drawings because I felt like I had more control of the lines I was drawing and able to create more intricate details. I consis-

tently try and create a sense of balance in symmetry within my pieces. Why do you enjoy painting/drawing? I find drawing, especially the detailed drawings I create, to be extremely therapeutic and relaxing. The fine lines and patterns have a very calming feel to them. The pieces I draw are very time consuming, and being a perfectionist, each line is carefully positioned and thought out. When I start to draw I completely immerse myself within the artwork, often for hours at a time. How did you feel about winning the John Winn Memorial Award for Emerging Artist at the Grammar Art Show? I was thrilled. It has definitely inspired and motivated me to keep creating and evolving my work. What inspires you? My main source of inspiration is nature,

more specifically native Australian plants. I’m always looking for interesting flowers and botanical elements to incorporate into my designs. Inspiration from artists includes Georges Seurat, with his use of Pointillism, and Monet’s beautiful landscapes with his use of simple, but effective, colour palettes. What do you like about toowoomba? I love the number of parks and green spaces there are, interspersed with the various old buildings. The city is really beginning to feel very cultural with more and more street art and events happening throughout the year. What is your dream goal or project? It has always been a goal of mine to create a series of pieces for my own solo show. I would also love to visit galleries all over the world. It’s an amazing feeling to see an artwork in person. 6567730ac

Exotic Kuala Lumpur culture BY NAOMI ANDREWS

Kuala Lumpur is perfect for those looking to explore a diverse and vibrant city, as Naomi Andrews discovered.

W

hen I think about Asian countries I dream about fragrant and exotic foods, unique experiences and sights, friendly and smiling people and an awesome exchange rate with the Aussie dollar. Malaysia’s tourism slogan is “Truly Asia”, which couldn’t be more accurate. When I visited its capital city Kuala Lumpur in May, I discovered everything I had ever dreamed Asia to be. From the minute I left my hotel in Bukit Bintang, I entered into the bustle of street-side food stalls selling a variety of local foods and dessert options. An usual treat was the baked cheese tart which consisted of a warm, gooey savoury cheese filling in a sweet tart shell. Kuala Lumpur was a shopper’s paradise. There are a multitude of large-scale shopping centres spread across the city, most of which feature a range of international chain-stores. However its the open-plan market places, like Chinatown KL’s Petaling Street, where you can really put your bartering skills to the test. From tourist souvenirs and food, to

clothing, jewellery and home decor items, the persuasive chorus of stall holders trying to entice you into their shops is an experience not for the faint-hearted. Eager to explore other cultural offerings of this vibrant city, I embarked on a half day tour to the Royal Selangor Pewter and Batik Factory, and the incredible Batu Caves. While the caves are a popular tourist attraction, the crowds in no way diminish the feeling of awe you get when you reach the top of the 272 stairs and walk into the main Cathedral Cave.

Located in the heart of a limestone hill, it houses a number of Hindu shrines under its 100-metre high arched ceiling. At the base of the staircase is an imposing 42.7 metre tall, gold-painted statue of Lord Muruga —the Hindu deity to which the caves are dedicated. Finally, no trip to Kuala Lumpur would be complete without a visit to the Petronas Twin Towers, and they did not disappoint. At 452 metres tall, I highly recommend heading up to the Skybridge and Observation Deck for an unparalleled view of the city.

Give yourself a money makeover BY LEANNE MCDONALD MANAGING DIRECTOR, PRINCIPAL AND SENIOR FINANCIAL PLANNER

W

hile it might not be quite as fun as a traditional makeover, a money makeover can improve your finances. Best of all, unlike other kinds of makeovers, a money makeover can actually save you money.

DESPITE ALL THE CONTRASTING FINANCIAL OPINIONS IT GENERALLY BOILS DOWN TO:

◆ Use money to get to financial independence ◆ Know where your money is going, ◆ Avoid expensive debt ◆ Use the power of compound interest. Any makeover begins with identifying the things you want to change.

Sit down, make an honest assessment of your current financial state, and then list a few things you wish were different. For example, your list might include: save more money; purchase a house; stop relying on credit cards; figure out where all your money goes. Be honest at this stage. You need to face up to things you want to change if you want your life to be different. You must spend less than you earn to build wealth. At the same time, if your list is a mile long, don’t beat yourself up over it. The next step is to actually implement your makeover. Take the steps you need to make the necessary changes in your life.

OWN YOUR TOMORROW

GET HELP IF NEEDED

You don’t necessarily need fancy tools to give yourself a financial makeover. But it often helps when someone has your back. Not only can they provide valuable and objective advice, but they’ll also be a coach who can help you stay on track and achieve your money makeover goals.

What is a de facto relationship? It’s complicated BY SENIOR ASSOCIATE AND ACCREDITED FAMILY LAW SPECIALIST, ANDREW MCCORMACK

“W

hen does a de facto relationship start?”, is a question I often get

asked. The reason that it is a common question is that there are different definitions for different purposes. There has never really been any hard and fast rules about when people are in a de facto relationship. In the eyes of the law to be in a de facto relationship, two people must be living together on a “genuine domestic basis”.

FACTORS USED TO DECIDE THIS INCLUDE:

◆ The duration of the relationship ◆ The nature and extent of common residence ◆ Whether a sexual relationship exists (or existed)

◆ The degree of financial dependence on each other and the financial support that has occurred ◆ Whether there has been any property (real estate or other assets) that have been purchased together ◆ Whether there was a degree of mutual commitment to a shared life ◆ Whether the general public believed that people were in a de facto relationship, and ◆ Whether there were children of the relationship and the care arrangements for the children. In making a determination about whether a relationship exists, a court does not have to find that all of the criteria mentioned above exists for it to make a declaration that a relationship

HEALTHY EATING

Food is your main source of energy and if you aren’t eating enough or eating well, then you aren’t getting the right amount. A healthy, balanced diet is what you need to get you through the school day in top form. Try healthy and tasty snacks like yogurt and berries or apple and peanut butter.

happy. Play on a school sports team or go for a run, as long as you do something to stop you sitting around all day.

It doesn’t matter if you’re an introvert or an extrovert, a little social interaction can go a long way. Make sure you have time for your friends and family in your busy schedule. This makes for better relationships and a break for you to recover energy.

PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Sleep is vitally important to energy levels, both while in school and beyond. Yet it’s easy to get caught up in the action of modern life and forget to make sure we’re getting enough rest. As a general rule, if you’re in high school then you should be getting at least eight or more hours sleep a night.

Everything should come in moderation, so make sure you take time for yourself too. A constantly packed schedule will only stress you out and make you more tired than before. Give yourself a little “me time” and do something you enjoy.

Shopping for tweens made easy BY ELLIE HUGHES

T

ween girls sit in an age group that is incredibly hard to shop for. At about nine to 12 years old, all the clothes available to them seem to be aimed at small children or 16-year-olds. However there are a few guidelines that can help overcome this when shopping for and dressing a tween.

IT’S OK TO BE CASUAL

GETTING CLOTHES FOR YOUR TWEEN DOESN’T HAVE TO BE DIFFICULT

A tween is still young, which is what makes them a tween. So be casual when shopping for them, because it’s the style that most suits their age group. Give them an outfit or two for going out, but there’s no need to go overboard.

DRESS FOR THE OCCASION OR LOCATION

Every age group would do well to remember there is a time and place for every outfit. An outfit for a tween should be

situation and location appropriate. For example, the short-shorts are for around the house or at the beach, not the shopping centre.

QUALITY COMES BEFORE PRICE

There aren’t many quality options when shopping for tweens, so be a little picky. Something of decent quality that costs more is likely to last longer and be more useful, saving you money in the long run. Clothing like this is usually more versatile as well, which means it can suit many outfits.

APPROPRIATE AMOUNTS OF SKIN

There is no need for tweens to show vast amounts of skin and it only takes away from any sense of style that could be developed. It looks inappropriate and overdone and attracts undesirable attention.

SPECIAL AVOCADO AND PRAWN CHICKEN SALAD

A mound of fresh, crisp greens, ripe cherry tomatoes and shining capsicum are topped by the heroes of the dish. Slices of grilled seasoned halloumi provide a dash of salt and different texture – superb when paired with the tomatoes and the mustard dressing. The prawns, however, are the true hero of this fresh meal. Cooked to absolute perfection – unlike any prawn I have ever had before – and finished with a crisp coating, they are fantastic dipped in the mustard dressing.

FEATHERS AND FINS

A modern twist on the traditional Surf and Turf, this dish is a favourite of customers – and for good reason. Creamy garlic sauce drips lavishly over tender prawns, topping the most tender and moist seasoned chicken I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. Cutting through the richness is a mound of sweet potato mash, homely and flavoursome. Perfectly cooked al dente broccoli and carrots provide a fresh finish to the dish.

style | horoscopes year and while you may feel a little like an underachiever believe me you have done fantastically well this year. Your family is pressing all the positive buttons making you as proud as punch. Nothing makes you smile more than cuddles from your nearest and dearest. Enjoy.

IT’S IN THE STARS CANCER

June 23rd – July 23rd Dream big Cancer — this is the time when all the planets are smiling down favourably making the impossible seem possible. I see great dreams coming to fruition so while the weather may seem a little chilly you are positively on fire.

LEO

July 24th – Aug 23rd Surprise Leo, your whole world is about to change for the better. If travel is on the agenda make it happen. Go see the world. Even it is only a small jump in the bigger picture it will lead you to future endeavours. A new career beckons — with it comes a new sense of responsibility, own it.

VIRGO

Aug 24th – Sept 24th Virgo it seems that July has more in store for you than you realise — clear focused dreaming now is permitted so if you are longing to spend a fortune on new clothes or revamping your home it will be so worth it in the long run. Clothes showcase your signature style — elegant, tasteful and oh so feminine.

LIBRA

Sept 24th – Oct 23rd July, we are already halfway through the

SCORPIO

Oct 24th – Nov 22nd When it comes to being in control or seeking a leader then look no further than the Scorpio star sign for guidance. Tactical experts that can get you out of any awkward situation is what they are great at. Just remember not to make one angry as they never forgive or forget. You have been warned.

SAGITTARIUS

Nov 23rd – Dec 21st If seeking money this month make sure you look in unexpected places — you never know where it can turn up. Working nine to five may be good for Dolly Parton but you can handle it in small doses. Work looks promising as a pet project finally starts to take shape making you breathe a sigh of relief.

CAPRICORN

Dec 22nd – Jan 20th Don’t become unravelled this July, all is well. It may feel like you are pushing yourself too hard so take some time out to enjoy family time. You need some time out getting back to nature feeling the grass tickle your toes and getting your hands dirty may be the only way to soothe your soul.

AQUARIUS

Jan 21st – Feb 19th Love and marriage may follow you this month so if you are single be on the lookout for a gorgeous new man coming into your life. He might not be tall, dark and handsome but then again no one ever said a bad word about short, blond and funny. If already married, then this is the

month to look at your partner and be thankful that you already have the man of your dreams.

PISCES

Feb 20th – Mar 20th Something fishy is happening — you will need your wits about you this month as it appears that someone or something is stirring the water in your bowl. If your world is spiralling out of control grab hold of something solid and hang on. It might be a rough ride but it will be memorable.

ARIES

Mar 21st – Apr 20th If broken-hearted this month you will soon be on the mend. Time heals all wounds so it seems you will soon be bouncing back with the vigour we all know that you have in abundance. It could be time to ensure that you are not following the flock. Strike out on your own and be strong. You can do it — after all you are not known as the black sheep for nothing.

TAURUS

Apr 21st – May 21st Your year so far has managed to go past at lightning speed much to your astonishment. Was it that long ago you were celebrating the New Year in and now here you are preparing to welcome another milestone? You are a party animaL, you love to socialise and be out and about. Just make sure that your body is prepared for the rigours it is about to go through.

GEMINI

May 22nd – June 22nd Twin signs of the Zodiac rejoice — it is time to put your cares behind you and jump in your car and drive, jump on an aeroplane or simply relax on a cruise ship while you take in the sights. July is the month where you need to get away from the hum drum of life so you can laugh, live, dare to dream. It will all be worth it.
