In Philippians 4:8, the Apostle Paul exhorts believers, “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” I have a beautiful example of this precept in my own family. Just over a year ago, my precious 25-year-old daughter-in-law had a surgery go awry and has been paralyzed from the waist down ever since. She and my son had only been married a year and she’d just begun her career as a sonographer. This precious young woman spent months in the hospital and months in rehab. The details of her suffering would break your heart. Yet she refused to let her paralysis define her. Instead, she started looking for ways to encourage others. Even as the COVID epidemic forced her to take on her own rehab, she’s continually looked for ways to inspire others who are paralyzed to help keep their chins up. God has given her the will and purpose to encourage those around her. She recently recorded a video hoping to do just that. I’d like to take the time to lift you up, dear reader, during this difficult time in our lives. It’s so easy to focus on all the bad in the world right now. But I want to encourage you to focus instead on the God who loves you. Our hope is in Him—and Him alone. Let’s rise above anything that’s not of peace, love, and joy. Let’s set our eyes on the very One who put our lives in motion. The One who gives us purpose. As Colossians 1:27 promises, “Christ in you, the hope of glory.”

Among the institutions that have been challenged the most during the pandemic are our school systems. In Tarrant County schools have been directed to continue virtual learning until at least Sept. 28 so public health officials can monitor any possible increases in COVID-19 cases resulting from Labor Day weekend activities. Many parents are facing difficult choices when it comes to not only the education of their children but their care outside of the classroom. Working parents are struggling with what this current public health emergency means for their families.

The City of Mansfield is extremely fortunate that our partner school district is made up of the best that public education has to offer. We offer our support to Mansfield ISD Board of Trustees, Administrators, Teachers and Staff, all of whom care deeply for this community. Our thoughts and prayers are with MISD and with families as they navigate this difficult time. As for me, I will continue praying that our students are returned to the classroom as soon as possible.

At the writing of this letter, COVID19 numbers were escalating. Hospitalizations were doubling every two weeks. Some say Texas opened too early. I say we just didn’t wear masks, wash hands and social distance when we re-opened the state. If we had, we shouldn’t have reached levels now threatening our health care system. Not only has this pandemic caused a crisis in health, I believe it has created a crisis in kindness. While we do see extraordinary acts of goodwill, we also see tempers flaring, opposing viewpoints flashing into fights, and cruel comments on social media. I’ve always thought Grand Prairie and Arlington were exempt from these type issues wuth which other cities have to deal. But what I read on social media sometimes makes me doubt

We don’t have to look far in the American Dream City to find folks going out of their way to make a difference. Case in point—as soon as the staff at River Legacy Nature Center realized COVID would prevent local kids from enjoying a traditional summer camp experience, the nonprofit put together an enriching virtual camp. Throughout the month of July and into August, their week-long programs are allowing Arlington kids between preschool and sixth grade to complete hands-on activities from their homes focused on wildlife, ecology, and the environment. Their curriculum—which is distributed via curbside pickup—is tailored to different age groups and includes at-home activities coupled with video lessons filmed at the Nature Center. Arlington Parks and Recreation and Elzie Odom Athletic Center got in on the act with their own Camp-in-a-Box
ARLI NGTON virtual mini-camp that allows campers to meet virtually and gives them everything they need to create your very own camp at home. They provide kids with learning materials, step-by-step instructions, and counselor guidance. Campers even get camp t-shirts. Thanks to them and so many others who offered their innovation and dedication to help our local kids enjoy summer 2020. I know we’re all ready to get back to nights on the town, the sights and sounds of Rangers baseball, and beating the Texas heat at the water park. Let’s all wear our masks, wash our hands, and do the things we’re supposed to do, so we can get back soon to living the American dream. Meanwhile, let’s all ask ourselves, “What can I do to make this time better for someone else?”

FAITH, FELLOWSHIP & FUN CAMP THURMAN HOSTS MISSION ARLINGTON FOR A ONE-OF-A-KIND CAMP EXPERIENCE
A
S THE BUS PULLED AWAY, a few counselors couldn't resist running alongside waving and shouting last words of encouragement. The smiles on the faces of the kids inside the bus said it all. It had been a day of outdoor fun, acceptance, and inspiration as a group of kids from Mission Arlington enjoyed a one-of-a-kind experience at Camp Thurman. Over the past 50 years, the nonprofit ministry-minded summer camp has blessed thousands of kids who've attended as campers or counselors — or both. In addition to hundreds of other campers who attend each year, they've also played host to Mission Arlington executive director, Tillie Burgin, and over 400 Mission Arlington kids who enjoy the pools, lazy river, rope courses, zipline, giant bouncing pillow, trapeze jumps, games, crafts, and more spread out over 14 verdant acres where kids can feel far from home, even though they're only in Pantego. But their visits are about much more than outdoor fun. They're about sharing God's love and helping each child discover their identity in Christ. At the end of the day, it's hard to tell who was more blessed — the kids or the counselors who served them, sharing their love of Jesus and His perfect plan for each young life.

y definition, a placebo is anything that seems to be a real medicine but isn’t. It can take many forms, a capsule, a pill, a saline injection, or oral liquid. Whatever the form, placebos do not contain any active ingredient meant to affect your health. Yet, often they still produce beneficial results, a phenomenon that is known as the placebo effect.

The use of placebos in medical trials Placebos have long been used in the clinical trials of new drugs. People in one group get the test drug, while others receive the placebo, believing they’re getting the real thing. Typically, in a trial, an experimental drug needs to be statistically more effective than the placebo to be considered a valid drug treatment.

TWO IMPLICATIONS OF THE PLACEBO EFFECT Despite numerous studies demonstrating the success of placebos in improving certain medical conditions, skeptics continue to insist the placebo effect is nothing more than self-deception, instances of patients simply convincing themselves they feel better. In the UK, a scholar who has spent much time researching the placebo effect is Dr. Steve Taylor, a senior lecturer in psychology at Leeds Becket University. In an article published in Psychology Today, Taylor concludes there are two main implications of the placebo effect.
Initially, the placebo effect was considered a sign of failure. More recently, however, many experts have concluded that a favorable placebo reaction indicates that another non-pharmacological mechanism may be present and working. Consequently, due to the placebo’s ability to produce favorable outcomes, researchers have begun studying them in their own right. And this work with placebos has shown success in treating a wide range of medical issues, from pain and depression to anxiety disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, Parkinson’s disease, and epilepsy. An ongoing mystery and possible explanations For all this success, how placebos work to produce beneficial medical effects is still not fully understood. Expectations and conditioning Part of the power of placebos may lie in the expectations of individuals taking them. This factor is enhanced when the recipient has a strong, trusting relationship with the physician administering the placebo. Augmenting expectations is life-long classical conditioning. We’re accustomed to taking medication to feel better, and the simple act of taking a pill — even a fake one — helps elicit a positive response. Changes in brain chemistry Numerous studies dating back to the late 1970s have verified the physiological effects that placebos have on certain portions of the brain. For example, several studies have found that when taken as pain killers, placebos brought decreased activity in parts of the brain associated with pain and made use of many of the same neurotransmitters and neural pathways as opioids. Further, other studies have established that placebos often produce neurological changes in areas of the brain targeted by antidepressant drugs, possibly explaining why placebos have a 50 to 75 percent success rate in trials involving antidepressant drugs. In summary, placebos have shown to work in some situations, and if they can be used safely alongside pharmaceutical interventions, they may have the potential to improve medical treatments.
First, he believes the human mind can powerfully influence many aspects of our physiology, including the experience of pain, the alleviation of some symptoms, and in some conditions, actual healing. Consequently, he concludes we have much more control over our health and our bodies than we usually assume. Our bodies are not just machines that can only be fixed by medical interventions. Our mind, he insists, is intricately interconnected with our body, and with our beliefs and intentions, we unconsciously influence our health. Taylor believes each of us has far greater potential for self-regulation and selfhealing than we are aware of. He believes the second implication of the placebo effect is that the conventional view of the relationship between the mind and the brain may be wrong. Traditionally, we see the mind as a by-product of the brain, a kind of shadow cast by our neurological processes. If this is true, he asks, how is it possible for mental processes to influence the brain and body. A shadow, after all, cannot influence the thing it is the shadow of. He concludes that the placebo effect suggests that our minds are more than just the product of matter, that the mind is, in some sense, primary rather than secondary to the brain. In both implications, much food for thought!

Take a little time each day to do some simple exercises to kick up your energy levels, boost brain function, and get more done. Try these four basic bodyweight exercises to get started:
Keep your back flat with your head and neck in a neutral position. Drive your elbows into the floor. Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat three times.
When done right, push-ups strengthen shoulders, triceps, and elbow joints. If you’re a beginner, it’s best if you do modified push-ups by keeping your knees on the ground. As you push up, keep your back straight and push up to straight elbows. If you don’t keep your back straight, you’ll know because your

It’s no secret that pregnancy and childbirth are stressful on your body. For that reason, you will need some recovery time before contemplating surgery. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recommends waiting at least six months after giving birth before having a mommy makeover. It’s best to wait until you’ve finished having children to have some procedures, such as a tummy tuck. What is the recovery time? Since every mommy makeover is customized, recovery times vary. In most instances, patients can resume daily activities such as driving and running errands after two or three weeks. Strenuous activities, such as lifting more than 25 pounds, will probably be off-limits for several weeks, so you will need to be sure you have extra help with childcare. According to HGTV, the number one request of home buyers and renters when shopping for a home is hardwood floors. A recent study by USA Today (using data from the National Association of Realtors) found that 54 percent of home buyers were willing to pay more for a home with hardwood floors. But you should also consider carefully whether hardwood flooring is the right choice for every room in your home — and what type of wood flooring you might want to install for the best resale value.

For most of us, the budget will set the parameters for the type of floor we install. Installing hardwood floors can cost between $9 and $12 per square foot, compared with about $3 to $5 per square foot for carpet — so some homeowners elect to install hardwood floors only in some rooms rather than throughout their home. However, carpet typically needs to be replaced if it becomes stained or worn out. High-end quality carpet can last about 10 to 15 years, while high-quality hardwood floors are long-lasting, even forever. In addition to your personal taste, you should consider styles, preferences, traditions, and even the climate in your community. While many buyers and homeowners prefer hardwood floors throughout their home, some prefer durable carpets with padding in the bedrooms and living rooms — because they prefer softer surfaces in those rooms. Also, if you live in a multi-story home, carpeting will help muffle noise. Rugs can be laid over hard floors, but there is the added expense of the rug and pad on top of the cost of the new floor. If you live in a warm, humid climate, you may want to steer away from wood altogether and go for a beautiful tile. In traditional markets, tastes still lean toward oak wood f looring, but some owners of contemporary homes are opting to refinish and stain their wood floors in different colors. Some other trends include wide planks, reclaimed or hand-scraped wood, and even exotic species like hickory or walnut. For those on a tighter budget, laminate flooring offers the look of wood floors at a lower price point. Other considerations include whether you have children, pets, or allergies. Hard surfaces are easier to keep clean, and there is typically less dirt and fewer allergens that can get trapped in carpet fibers. Even though carpet can be less expensive, hardwood floors last longer and can be easier to keep clean and can be refinished. Ultimately, though, the hardwood vs. carpet decision should be made based on your personal preference, especially if you intend to stay in your home for a few years.

STICK TO A ROUTINE It can be tempting to stay in bed until the last minute and skip a morning shower. And remember to get out of the house for a while, too. Go out for lunch or take a walk. Call a friend to socialize.

hospitality GO BACK IN TIME AT ONE OF HENRY TROST’S EARLY WEST TEXAS HOTELS BY J ENNI FER SI MO NSO N
n a late morning in May, the West Texas town of Marfa is unusually quiet. The yoga studios, art galleries, and artsy bookstore the town is so famous for will be closed for the day due to recent pandemic measures. The only cars that line the main avenue that leads up to the Presidio County Courthouse are clustered under the famous neon red Hotel Paisano sign. Visitors to the region sit on the hotel’s patio at safely spaced tables around a 1930s Mediterranean fountain eating steel-cut oatmeal and discussing the day’s plan.

This part of Texas popular for its raw beauty, rugged mountainside, and high desert have long drawn visitors. During the middle of a pandemic, the wide-open spaces seem like one of the best places to spend a few days. Tourists come out here to hike through cacti-lined trails, stargaze under the darkest skies in the region, and canoe down the Rio Grande river. Those looking to stay at a budget chain hotel can find the same roadside accommodations found along any interstate in America. Those looking to connect with the early settlers can find historic hotels along the byways that bisect the former railroad towns. A man by the name of Henry Trost is responsible for several of the historic hotels that dot the Trans-Peco region. In the early 1900s, Henry Trost created an architecture firm with his brother in El Paso. Trost and Trost designed more than 500 buildings throughout Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. Trost found inspiration in virtually every architectural style from Victorian to Art Deco but embraced the Spanish Colonial Revival more than any other. He was one of the first architects to design buildings adapted to the desert region, which he called “Arid America.” Four of his early hotels not only still stand in this part of West Texas, but they have each been renovated to show off their original grandeur.

THE HOTEL PAISANO // MARFA The Hotel Paisano was built in anticipation of an oil boom that never materialized. Construction broke ground days before the stock market crash of 1929. Despite these facts, the hotel thrived during its early days with a steady stream of guests, including traveling salesmen departing from the local train station, ranchers buying and selling cattle in the lobby, and tourists in favor of the high desert climate. Known as the “most elegant hotel between El Paso and San Antonio,” Trost designed the Spanish-Baroque hotel around a Mediterranean-style fountain in its central courtyard. Much of Trost’s original detail work, such as the red-tiled roof, ironwork balconies, extensive interior tile, and wood beams, remain in place. The hotel’s real claim to fame was born in 1955 when Warner Bros. picked it as the headquarters for the movie Giant. Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean, along with the rest of the movie crew, made the hotel their base for the movie’s six-week shoot. HOTEL EL CAPITAN // VAN HORN Seventy miles northwest of El Paisano sits its sister property Hotel El Capitan. The Van Horn hotel is a small version of its big sister to the south. Trost blended his Arid American style with Mission Revival, resulting in a pink stucco front with a mission facade. Like El Paisano, the lobby details include European tiling, wrought ironwork, exposed beams, and high ceilings. Twelve of the 52 rooms have French doors that open to courtyard balconies overlooking a central fountain that is surrounded by palm and olive trees. Both hotels opened in 1930 as part of the Gateway Hotel Chain. Encouraged by the news of the upcoming openings of Carlsbad Caverns, Guadalupe, and Big Bend National Parks, a local developer named Charles Bassett built a chain of five hotels in West Texas and New Mexico to draw tourism to destinations within 200 miles of El Paso.

GAGE HOTEL // MARATHON The two-story yellow-brick Mission-style hotel along Highway 90W has provided comfort for wayward travelers since 1927. Local rancher Alfred Gage commissioned Trost to design a building that would be the small railroad town of Marathon’s only hotel and act as a base for his ranching empire. As time marched on, the population of Marathon dwindled, and so did the Gage. In 1978 a Houston oilman purchased the all-but-forgotten hotel. Restoration began immediately. The new owners remodeled the 15 guest rooms in the original hotel and have added 20 pueblo-style adobe brick rooms. HOLLAND HOTEL // ALPINE In the early 20th century, an affluent rancher by the name of John Holland saw the need for a “respectable” hotel in Alpine. In 1908 he built a hotel with

his namesake right across the street from the Southern Pacific Railroad depot. After his death, his son Clay Holland invested $250,000, hiring Trost to remodel the hotel. Trost designed the exterior to match existing adjacent structures and the interior with Spanish Revival elements such as arches, embossed wood beams, and tile floors. Upon the grand reopening in March 1928, the Alpine Avalanche described the remodel as, “No expense has been spared to make the hotel the very latest and most modern that could be built and it is believed that this modern hostelry will be the means of attracting many people of wealth to the area for vacation in the wonderful climate.”

But the offering of vegetables, carbs, and protein in one easy and delicious item is sure to leave you satisfied with little to no mess. You can also easily add things like avocado, a fried egg, or cheese to switch it up.
BLT WITH GARLIC AIOLI MAKES: 2 SANDWICHES | TIME: 30 MINUTES INGREDIENTS: Sandwich: 8 slices of thick cut bacon | 4 slices of bread | Lettuce | Tomato | Salt & pepper, to taste Aioli: 2 tsp. minced garlic | 2 tsp. lemon juice | ½ cup mayonnaise | ¼ tsp. salt DIRECTIONS: FRY OR BAKE bacon to desired crispiness, set on a paper towel to soak up any excess fat and let cool. FOR THE AIOLI, mix minced garlic, lemon juice, mayonnaise, and salt in a bowl until combined. TOAST bread and spread aioli on both sides. Stack bacon, lettuce, and tomato onto bread and top with the other slice of toasted bread. SERVE with chips or soup for a classic meal.

CAST IRON CHEESE ENCHILADA BAKE TIPS AND TRICKS
MAKES: 10 TO 12 SERVINGS | 30 MINUTES
This dish is perfect for “Meatless Monday”, or you can add in 2 cups of shredded rotisserie chicken for more protein. Top with sour cream, tomatoes, jalapeños, and more!
INGREDIENTS: 8 corn tortillas, cut into 4 triangles each | 28 oz. can red enchilada sauce | 15 oz. can black beans, drained & rinsed | 15 oz. can corn, drained & rinsed | 5 cups shredded cheddar cheese DIRECTIONS: PREHEAT oven to 400°F. DRAIN corn and black beans and combine into one bowl, set aside. PLACE half of your tortilla triangles in the bottom of a 12-inch cast iron pan. Sprinkle corn and bean mix over the tortillas. COVER with half of your cheese. COVER cheese with half of your enchilada sauce. PLACE the other half of tortilla triangles over the enchilada sauce. SPRINKLE remaining cheddar cheese on top and bake for 25 minutes. august 2020

ONE POT SPAGHETTI MAKES: 4 SERVINGS | 30 MINUTES INGREDIENTS: 1 lb. lean ground beef | ¼ cup onion, diced | 1 Tbsp. garlic, minced | 28 oz. jar diced tomatoes | 2 Tbsp. basil | 2 Tbsp. parsley | ½ Tbsp. salt | 1 tsp. pepper | 8 oz. thin spaghetti noodles DIRECTIONS: BROWN beef in a large heavy pot. ADD garlic and onion and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until onions soften. Add tomatoes, basil, parsley, salt, and pepper. STIR until combined. BREAK noodles in half and add to the pot making sure all noodles are covered with the liquid. PLACE the lid on the pot and cook over medium to low heat for 18 to 20 minutes. Do not remove lid while cooking. You want the noodles to cook while in the pot. REMOVE lid. Stir well and serve!
