I’ve begun to see a pattern in me and my husbands morning prayers—a recurring plea each morning. Lord, help us to be “significant” today. Help us to make a difference in a life today and may You be glorified through it. As time marches on, our focus in life has certainly changed. Our peaceful, empty nest has birthed a wideopen canvas to be a living sacrifice for Christ; to be God’s hands and feet to those around us. I love Mark 10:45 which says, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." May we all be encouraged to be the hands and feet of Jesus in our own circle of influence, today and every day. Lastly, as we enter the month of March and our annual Top Doc section, we want to lift up a special prayer of thanksgiving for the many outstanding doctors and medical practices in our area, working so hard among us each day.

Glad to see spring creeping into place as the city starts coming to life amid warm temperatures and all that green. March in Mansfield is the start of great family fun, and there is no better place to begin than at the Pickle Parade in Historic Downtown Mansfield. The eighth annual event, set for March 15-16, will have some changes this year as the parade and palooza work around the South Main Street reconstruction. Visit their website, www.pickleparade.org, for details. It wouldn’t be spring without a little cleaning. Several city departments are joining together Saturday, March 23, for “Not Your Mother's Spring
MA NS FI ELD
Cleaning.” The team will demonstrate making DYI cleaning products, provide tips on organizing and help residents get ready for April’s Chunk Your Junk clean up event. The program is 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Chris W. Burkett Service Center, 620 S. Wisteria St. Check the city website or Facebook for registration information. Enjoy the spring weather!

When I begin to count the number of charitable organizations and generous individuals who come together to make Arlington the American Dream City, my cup runneth over. For countless Arlington residents and organizations, selflessness and good works seem to be a way of life. One outstanding example is The Arlington Tomorrow Foundation which last year alone contributed nearly $2.3 million through 25 grants to enhance our city services and support a variety of charitable causes. Grants included a $1 million gift toward the Green Oak School’s future life prep academy for students with intellectual disabilities and an $82,000 contribution for webcams in Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. These cameras allow families to see and talk to their
newborns, when they can’t be at the hospital with them. The Arlington Tomorrow Foundation also supported projects aimed at increasing access to healthcare, food, and affordable housing, providing school supplies, bicycles, and safe after-school activities for youth, and enhancing the city’s cultural and recreational opportunities. In fact, since May 2007 the foundation has awarded almost 400 grants totaling nearly $21 million to local charities and city departments. May we all continue to work together and look for ways—large and small—that we can reach out and make our community—and our world—a better place to live.

Arlington’s Maren Morris headed to the show with five nominations, and though she didn’t take home any hardware, she did perform a rendition of Neil Young’s “After the Gold Rush” with Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus. Burleson native Kelly Clarkson was up for best Pop Vocal Album but lost out to Ariana Grande’s Sweetener, and Colleyville’s Demi Lovato was up for Best Pop Duo/Group Per formance, an award that was won by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga for “Shallow” from A Star is Born. Jerry Junkin & Dallas Winds were up for Best Classical Compendium, but that went to JoAnn Falletta and the London Symphony Orchestra. And Grapevine native Post Malone performed with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but didn’t win any of the four awards for which he was nominated. Travis Scott, most recently seen as a guest performer during the Super Bowl LIII halftime show, represented Missouri City with a performance of “No Bystanders,” though he missed out on awards for Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Album. And just two months after being named Billboard’s “No. 1 Gospel Artist of the last decade,” Houston’s own gospel singer Yolanda Adams took part in a tribute to Aretha Franklin, performing with Fantasia and Andra Day. “Thank you so much for the wonderful comments,” she said on Twitter after the performance.

YOUR BEST SELF BEGINS WITHIN BY B R O C JA HNK E
Wouldn’t it be nice to thrive in your relationships at home, at work, and in the public? For years I would have some success thriving, but inevitably I would find myself back in some sort of dysfunction because I would discover the character flaws in those around me. My marriage was always just okay, my work relationships were never quite right, and don’t get me started on those obnoxious parents at my kid’s sporting events. Everyone else was always the problem. If my boss could just lead better. If my wife would just think like I thought. If the coach would just get more training. If my coworkers would just trust me more. Signs of heavy dysfunction to slight dysfunction shrouded every relationship in my life. I saw other people around me doing well in their relationships, so why couldn’t I do better? Eventually I discovered a concept that began my journey of getting closer to thriving in relationships. “You can’t change other people, you can only change yourself. So, the best way to thrive in relationships is to draw a circle around yourself and fix everything inside that circle.” (Matthew 7:1-5 in the Christian New Testament). So, the best piece of advice I could ever give myself in order to thrive is to make sure I am in the best spot in life through asking myself what it is about me that needs to change or grow—not asking that about others. As I stopped focusing on changing those around me and focused on changing myself, progress slowly but surely started to happen. It’s exhausting trying to change others. It’s nearly impossible to change others. It’s short-sighted and selfish to try and change others. Trying to change others is control. But trying to change yourself so that you can relate better to those around you? That is love. If you are sick and tired of not thriving in
all the relationships that surround you, then turn unselfishly inward. Make focusing on you the top priority. Here are some steps I have taken to change myself: •
Go and see a professional therapist for a few sessions. A lot of times there are things in our past that keep us locked into certain negative behaviors. If you figure out what those hurts and ruts are, then often you can break your cycle of hurt and pain.
Read. If we stop learning then we stop growing. A lot of people say to me that they are not readers so they just can’t learn. If that is the case then listen to audio books, take an online class, or listen to podcasts. Just do something that causes you to think more deeply and caringly then you do now. This is a must.
Focus on your spiritual life. If we can get in touch with a God that has all the compassion, power, and wisdom to change us then we really must focus on that source. A few moments of consistent focus on the spiritual can bring great calm, focus, and peace.
Exercise. Maybe exercise for you looks like a walk, a workout, or joining a gym. Whatever it is, this is one of the best ways to deal with stress, anxiety, anger, and negative emotions.
I have got to resist the temptation to isolate and I must find myself in a community setting that focuses on growth. A book club, an exercise group, a small group at church, or taking a class. These are hallmarks of people that change and thrive.
So, if your relationships are struggling, then most likely it is you that has the issue. Besides, even if it’s not you, there is very little you can do about it. Thrive—it all starts with you.

COVER STORY Dr. Jed Hildebrand and his wife, Kim, are learning the lesson parents have been learning for ages—children grow up too fast. These days they spend as much time as they can outdoors watching their kids, Kai and Liv, discover and explore the world around them. Kai has inherited his dad’s athletic gene and Jed and Kim hustle to keep up with him, on his motorbike or snowboard or his own two feet. During our photo shoot at their lovely home, Dr. Hildebrand had his hands full, as he scrambled up the clubhouse ladder behind Kai or kept up with Liv on the family’s trampoline. But clearly, he wouldn’t have it any other way.

GETTING BRACES AS AN ADULT? Ask about clear braces and Invisalign.
D magazine Best Orthodontist 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 Past President of Arlington Dental Study Club Invisalign®- clear aligner provider
It’s a magical time in the life of this little family and a wonderful time at Hildebrand Orthodontics. Long known as the cool place to get a beautiful smile—for kids and adults alike—Hildebrand Orthodontics is no run-of-the-mill orthodontic office. The entire space was created to transport patient into a surfer-style beach scene with beach murals on all the walls, an open floor plan drenched in natural light, a bright blue “sky” above, and a casual, friendly vibe that will have you looking forward to your next visit.
FUN AT EVERY TURN Then there’s Dr. H himself. With his all-American good looks and never-meta-stranger personality, he knows how to make the orthodontic experience fun and highly individualized. The waiting area of Hildebrand Orthodontics includes adult-friendly, old-school video games, a TV lounge area, and a coffee bar. But all parents are encouraged to come back to the treatment area to see how their child’s treatment is going and get updates from Dr. Hildebrand each visit.
NO-WAIT POLICY Don’t get too comfortable in the waiting room though. Hildebrand Orthodontics adheres to a strict “no wait” policy. Patients are asked to grab their chart and seat themselves as Dr. Jed Hildebrand and the staff promptly begin evaluating the patient and treatment plan for that day. Dr. H sees every patient at every appointment, unlike at other, larger clinics where they’re often seen by an assistant only or different doctors at each visit.
MEET DR. H Dr. Hildebrand enjoys participating in Christian dental missionary work in Mexico and has traveled overseas to dental clinics in refugee camps in Cambodia, India, and Thailand. With his love of extreme sports, he can often be found skiing, skydiving, or challenging himself in some other adventure. Dr. Hildebrand was a contestant on the hit CBS reality TV show Survivor V: Thailand in the fall of 2002. He has appeared on numerous TV shows, including MTV’s TRL, The Carolyn Rhea Show, CBS’ The Early Show, Entertainment Tonight, Extra, E!, Inside Edition, and The Ticket talk radio show. His best days are spent with Kim, Kai, and Liv just enjoying life.
BRACES FOR ALL AGES Although Dr. Hildebrand prefers to see a patient for the first time at age seven, many of his patients are adults who either never had braces as a child or did but didn’t wear their retainer long enough. With Invisalign clear tooth aligners and new clear braces, Dr. H can straighten your teeth—often in less than a year— and with little hassle as they’re virtually invisible.
high-tech thermal wires which respond to the temperature of the mouth allowing him to straightened teeth faster than ever before and with far less discomfort to patients. “No more tightening of braces and no more bands on back teeth,” he Dr. Hildebrand said. “That means far less risk of cavities. We’re also using new mini braces, the smallest braces on the market, that cut treatment time down by six months.”
KNOW-YOU-BY-NAME CARE Dr. Hildebrand and his stellar staff not only know each patient by name but know their families as well. Dr. Hildebrand sees every patient at every visit. “Arlington is a big city with the heart of a small town,” he said. “Our goal is to treat a small number of patients, but to treat them very well.”

This highly skilled, innovative team of surgeons at the top of their game, bring the latest innovations, cutting-edge minimally invasive surgical techniques, and the most upto-date care to their friends and neighbors in Mansfield and surrounding communities. Serving thousands of patients throughout Mansfield, Arlington, Grand Prairie, Midlothian, Cedar Hill, Fort Worth, and beyond, Drs. Gary Alexander, Jeremy Parcells, Joshua Trussell, and Andrew Standerwick provide personalized, one-on-one care and strive to exceed their patients’ expectations. All of the surgeons are pioneers in minimally invasive procedures and continue to bring new, cutting-edge techniques to the communities they serve. With smaller incisions and less trauma to surrounding tissue, minimally invasive surgery typically results in better outcomes, faster recovery, less scarring, less risk of infection, less blood loss, shorter recovery periods and
hospital stays, and better clinical outcomes than traditional open surgery. Offering a vast array of leading-edge surgical services, Surgical Associates of Mansfield’s expertise spans a wide array of procedures including those listed below. R O B OT IC - AS S I ST E D S UR GE RY The ground breaking da Vinci Surgical System helps surgeons overcome many of the potential challenges associated with traditional open and laparoscopic surgery. The da Vinci System changes surgery for patients and physicians alike. Surgeons trained on the da Vinci System operate robotic arms equipped with tiny instruments, through just a few small incisions. The da Vinci features a magnified 3D high-definition vision system and tiny wristed instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human wrist. As a result, it enables a trained surgeon to operate with enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control. In addition to the benefits of traditional minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery previously mentioned, the da Vinci System can offer a more delicate approach to procedures, and less movement and handling of body tissues.
SERVICES INCLUDE: • DaVinci Robotic-assisted Surgery • Gallbladder Disease • Hernia Surgery • Colon and Rectal Cancer • Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery • Reflux Disease • Diverticulitis and Benign Colon and Rectal Disease • Hemorrhoid and Anorectal Disease • Gastrointestinal Surgery • Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic Surgery • Endoscopy and Colonoscopy • And More!
BARIATRIC W EIGHT LOSS SU R G ERY Obesity is a silent killer that touches the lives of thousands of North Texans and affects more than one-third of adults in the U.S. Obesity has been linked to an increased risk for certain cancers, type 2 diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, joint pain, cardiovascular disease, infertility and problems with pregnancy, poorer mental health, and more. It also impacts one’s self-esteem, relationships, and overall quality of life. When nonsurgical measures such as diet and exercise haven’t worked, surgical weight-loss offers many people new hope for a better, healthier life. The surgeons at Surgical Associates of Mansfield have performed hundreds of successful bariatric surgeries, including gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, duodenal switch, and gastric balloon weight loss system. They also perform revision surgery, including removal of gastric bands and/or conversion to a different bariatric surgery, giving patients a second chance at permanent weight loss. They conduct a thorough surgical, medical, psychological, and nutritional evaluation of each weight loss surgery candidate using a multi-disciplinary approach, then educate them about options so they can make an informed decision. This, along with postoperative follow up, can improve the chances of a successful outcome and helps ensure the patient is mentally, emotionally, and physically prepared for life after surgery. EMER GENCY SURGERY AN D T R AU MA Whether the unexpected happens and an accident or injury occurs, or a surgical
emergency arises due to disease or illness, it’s imperative you have a surgeon that is highly qualified and available as quickly as possible. The surgeons at Surgical Associates of Mansfield are ready, responding swiftly when unplanned, unscheduled emergency surgery is required. And although they perform what are often life-saving surgeries, they use minimally invasive techniques whenever possible. At the same time, deeply caring and compassionate, surgeons with Surgical Associates of Mansfield strive to spend time with the patient’s loved ones to explain the situation and answer questions. HER N IA R EPA I R S UR GE RY More than one million hernia repairs are performed in the U.S. each year. Approximately 800,000 are to repair inguinal (inner groin) hernias, the most common type of hernia, and the rest are for other types of hernias. In an inguinal hernia, the intestine or the bladder protrudes through the abdominal wall or into the inguinal canal in the groin. Other types include incisional (resulting from an incision), femoral (outer groin), umbilical (belly button), and hiatal hernia (upper stomach). The vast majority of these hernia repairs including complex cases are able to be approached robotically. Since not all patients are good candidates for robotic-assisted hernia surgery, the team also performs traditional laparoscopy as well as open surgery when required. This surgical team is at the forefront of abdominal wall reconstruction and routinely uses da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery for hernia repair. In many cases, the da Vinci system provides a high-resolution 3D view of the hernia that a 2D view, available via
traditional laparoscopy, doesn’t offer. Since not all patients are good candidates for robotic-assisted surgery, the team also performs traditional laparoscopic hernia repair as well an open surgery when required. R E F L UX S UR GE RY If gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD, acid reflux), symptoms are severe and cannot be eased with over-the-counter medications and lifestyle changes, your doctor may suggest surgery. Surgical Associates of Mansfield has helped hundreds of patients suffering with GERD, heartburn, other types of reflux condition with minimally invasive surgical procedures, including robotic hiatal hernia repair, robotic fundoplication, endoscopic fundoplication (transoral incisionless fundoplication), and robotic LINX procedure. When you need the skill of a surgeon, schedule an appointment with Surgical Associates of Mansfield. Whether you’re looking for a first or second opinion, you can put your trust in Drs. Gary Alexander, Jeremy Parcells, Joshua Trussell, and Andrew Standerwick, visionary Top Docs who stay on the cutting-edge of surgical innovation while providing compassionate, patient-centered care.

PECAN TREE DENTAL Quin n S mi t h , D M D a n d Ta n a ya Sa n d e rs , DDS
In 5000 BC, a Sumerian text describes “tooth worms” as the cause of dental decay. And thousands of years later in 1790, John Greenwood, son of Isaac Greenwood and one of George Washington’s dentists, constructed the first known dental foot engine. He adapted his mother’s foot treadle spinning wheel to rotate a drill. Throughout history, we have continued to evolve and perfect the way we maintain our oral care. Modern day advances in dentistry are evolving even more rapidly with technological advances and improved materials.
At Pecan Tree Dental, located in South Grand Prairie, the doctors and staff have embraced the ever-changing state of dentistry. Drs. Quinn Joseph Smith and Tanaya Sanders and their staff have invested in advanced technology and thousands of hours in continuing education. “Being a superior dentist during these modern times we live in requires a dedicated and concerted effort,” Dr. Smith said. “The advancements in modern dentistry are amazing and I love being a part of it all. If I was in the market for a family dentist, I would want to find someone who eats and

He or she must be patient-focused and have a gentle hand.” Pecan Tree Dental has a motto they promote and focus on every morning as a dental team, “LIGHTEN BURDENS, HEAL PEOPLE” …it’s one of their core values. “That focus has helped create a culture of caring in our dental office,” said Dr. Smith. The Pecan Tree Dental team has developed and nurtured a culture of service and compassion that has endeared them to generations of families. They are the premier neighborhood dental practice that sees everyone from six months old to 106 years old. “IT IS ALL ABOUT YOU,” is another core value at Pecan Tree Dental. Because ‘it is all about you’, the doctors and staff put themselves in “your” shoes and make every effort to make your dental visits convenient, comfortable, gentle, entertaining, and affordable…exceeding all expectations. M EET THE DOCTORS Quinn Smith, DMD Raised in a small town outside of Boise, Idaho, Dr. Smith is the 7th of 10 children. The necessity of faith, family, and hard
work were instilled in him as a young boy. The small family farm on which he was raised required him to help milk “Toto”, the family milk cow, and undertake many other chores to help pitch in for his large family. He has always loved animals and the outdoors. After completing his studies at Boise State University, he received his doctorate of dentistry at the University of Louisville, School of Dentistry. Because Dr. Smith believes in giving back to the community, he opens his office, twice a year, to offer free dental treatment – to women during Mother’s Day and veterans during Veterans Day to show his love and gratitude for all the sacrifices they make. Those are some of his most favorite work days. Dr. Smith enjoys completing cosmetic Smile Makeovers, cosmetic veneers, dental implants, and providing sedation dentistry. “One of my favorite things about practicing dentistry is checking out before and after photos of my patients,” Dr. Smith said. “Giving a patient a beautiful, brand-new smile or removing a painful, abscessed tooth and replacing it with a dental implant are some of my greatest passions. Often, those treat-
ments are life-altering for the patient… and I’m just grateful to play a small role.” Dr. Smith is married to his beautiful wife, Rachel, and together, they have two young sons, Whitaker and Elias, and a baby daughter named Parry Beth. When asked what his greatest achievement in life is, Dr. Smith said “my marriage and family…by far, the greatest, and nothing comes close to second place. My sweet and beautiful wife, Rachel, and our three children, give meaning to my life and immense happiness…more than I could ever ask for.” Tanaya Sanders, DDS Dr. Sanders grew up in Lancaster, Texas, and went to school at First Baptist Academy of Dallas. She went to college at Xavier University of Louisiana and completed her doctorate of dentistry at Tennessee College of Dentistry. Dr. Sanders loves people! She has a heart of gold and treats everyone like family. Just ask her patients. Dr. Sanders met her awesome husband, Alix, during her years in Dental School. Together, they have an adorable daughter named Taylor. Pecan Tree Dental is now welcoming new patients.

UNITED DERMATOLOGY ASSOCIATES Jean ni n e H oa n g , M D
Perhaps like many people you’ve thought of dermatology as an aesthetic field rather than a medical one. But dermatologists like Dr. Jeannine Hoang and the staff of United Dermatology spend their days doing much more than treating acne, warts, and rashes. She is called upon daily to diagnose and treat serious—even life-threatening—skin conditions, such as skin cancer. But thanks to advancing technology, they’re also able to identify pre-cancerous areas and head cancer off, before it begins. “Skin cancer is highly treatable, when caught early,” Dr. Hoang said. “That makes routine skin checks paramount.” And because skin conditions are often indications of problems elsewhere in the body, Dr. Hoang has become increasingly interested in other aspects of healthcare, fitness, and nutrition. “I’m passionate about preventive medicine, anti-aging and learning about proactive approaches to maintain health and function through healthy lifestyle habits,” she said. Dr. Hoang has studied the benefits of bioidentical hormone replacement, believing that natural hormonal balance throughout life is an integral component of health and wellness and is actively pursuing further education in this field through the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. “When the body is healthy and balanced, it will show through healthy, radiant skin,” Dr. Hoang said. “My goal is to practice preventive, proactive medicine, empowering my patients to care for their skin to prevent disease, cancer, and aging, while addressing the overall health of their bodies.” She also offers non-invasive and minimally invasive cosmetic enhancement
technologies that provide her patients enhanced beauty in the most natural looking way possible. Dr. Hoang oversees each United Dermatology facility and has hand-selected a talented group of caregivers who shar her vision of preventative, proactive medicine, including physician’s assistants Lisa Moody, Brian Cook, Kyla Crispe, Tiffany Bivens, Uyen Mimi Phan, Jason Tharpe and Paige Herlihy. She has personally trained each PA to strive for excellence in service, clinical acumen, and delivering superior results. MEET DR. HOANG Jeannine Hoang graduated summa cum laude from the University of Texas at Austin and earned her MD at Baylor College of Medicine. She completed an internship in internal medicine at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas and a residency in dermatology at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. With her board certification completed, she opened her first office in Mansfield where her patient base grew so rapidly she soon opened additional locations in
the DFW area. Now with thriving United Dermatology practices in Mansfield, Arlington, Burleson and Flower Mound, Dr. Hoang offers a full menu of medical and cosmetic services to her ever-growing patient population.

KOS/DANCHAK AUDIOLOGY & HEARING AIDS Melis sa D a n c h a k , A uD, C C C - A
Dr. Melissa Danchak is in the quality- oflife business. Specifically, helping people hear the best they can and improving their quality of life business! Dr. Danchak began working at KDA in 1997 and she has owned the practice since 2002. “Susanne Kos, the original owner of the practice, was very well respected and trusted by area physicians,” Danchak says. “Those physicians referred patients to her on a monthly basis and continue to refer to us today. This practice has been helping North Texans hear the best they can for over 32 years." The patient journey to better hearing begins with a discussion about the hearing challenges someone is facing, followed by a thorough hearing evaluation. A live listening demonstration with hearing devices is then provided. Dr. Danchak’s experience tells her that this process is the best way to help people realize the quality of life improvements they will have by addressing their hearing needs. "At any age, hearing loss can interfere with relationships, education, work performance, and when left untreated, is proven to lead to social isolation and depression. More recently, many reports have also shown a direct link to an increase in cognitive decline," Danchak says. "There is also a stigma associated with wearing hearing aids; a perception that wearing hearing aids will make you look older. The truth is that wearing hearing aids helps you hear better and understand more clearly what is being said - just like wearing glasses helps you see better and more clearly. There is also confusion about what good hearing health care is and where to get it. We believe that better hearing is an investment, not a
transaction. The services that we provide reflect the patient first approach that we take in order to provide good hearing health care. We also participate with most major medical insurance companies and have partnerships with CareCredit and Wells Fargo Health Advantage so you can get the help you need, today.” With the many advancements in hearing technology, Dr. Danchak is excited to provide patients with the live listening demonstration experience. “It’s always a pleasure to watch as someone hears their loved one clearly from down the hallway for the first time (again). It can be such an emotional experience for the entire family. The range of positive emotions and responses always reminds us of why we do what we do.” Dr. Danchak and her staff take time getting to know each patient, their family, their lifestyle, and their hearing/communication needs. They know that an investment in better hearing is not just about the technology and that is why they provide a Complete Hearing Health Care Program. “This
program is the single most comprehensive in the North Texas area and includes all of the service people need to be successful with their investment in better hearing and with Kos/Danchak Audiology. It also includes free batteries for the lifetime of the devices!” The long-term relationships Kos/Danchak Audiology has forged with their patients and the patient centric approach they take is one reason that they have garnered over 100 five-star reviews on Google, Facebook and HealthyHearing.com. It is also why so many of their satisfied patients refer their friends and family to them each month.

DARIEN W. BRADFORD, MD
Darien Bradford is a pioneer. Renowned for his minimally-invasive surgical techniques, he’s spent a decade offering patients a successful alternative to traditional open-heart and open-chest surgery. A leader and innovator in his field, Dr. Bradford has paved the way for others as he helped established minimally-invasive surgery techniques of the chest, heart, lungs, esophagus, diaphragm, and trachea. In the past, the only way for a surgeon to see and operate on a heart or other internal organ was to open the body. For heart surgery, that meant cracking open the sternum and momentarily stopping the heart, leaving the patient with a lifetime of grotesque scarring, months of painful recovery, and the probability of any number of life-threatening complications. Innovators like Dr. Bradford reimagined this scenario with shorter recovery time, less risk of infection, negligible scarring, reduced recovery time, less blood, less pain, fewer complications, and far greater success rates. Dr. Bradford helped pioneer robotic surgery in our area as well as introducing a new mechanical heart valve requiring less anticoagulation.
comfortable with the diagnosis and confident in the specialist who’s spent so much time studying and searching the latest techniques and technologies, to make what could be a life-altering condition a mere bump in the road.
"My goal is to improve each patient’s quality of life through advanced treatment and to do so in a way that minimizes pain, risk, and recovery time for them,” Dr. Bradford said. “Because each patient is unique, I work closely with my patients and their physicians to tailor a treatment program designed specifically for them.”
Dr. Bradford uses minimally-invasive Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy (ENB) to access difficult-to-reach areas of the lung, aiding in the diagnosis of lung disease and leading to earlier, personalized treatment, potentially saving lives. LungGPS technology, used in the Medtronic superDimension navigation system, is a remarkable way to maximize the ENB procedures, a method of obtaining lung tissue biopsies from peripheral regions. In fact, this superDimension navigation system was nominated as “Best Medical Technology” by the Galien Foundation.

Not many junior high students know what they want to do with the rest of their lives. But David Dyslin did. As early as 8th grade, young David knew he wanted to be a surgeon. That certainty was partially due to the inspiration of his best friend’s father, a well-respected local physician. Now, he spends his days extending the lives and improving the life quality of his bariatric patients. “Bariatric surgery has been a rewarding field for me,” he said. “It enables me to offer men and women the opportunity to lead healthier, fuller, more productive lives. I’m able to empower my patients to take their health into their own hands. Then I’m privileged to see how happy and full their lives can become. Every one of their victories is a victory for my team and me and it’s very rewarding for us.” Dr. Dyslin says his journey has been unique since he began his surgery training at the time when open surgery was the norm and has been able to participate in the birth and evolution of laparoscopy in general and bariatric surgery. “Then I was able to train and gain experience in robotic surgery,” Dr. Dyslin said. “I feel like exposure to all three has made me a better surgeon.” Dr. Dyslin advocates a hands-on approach with his patients. “I see all of my bariatric patients myself and am able to walk with them through the whole process,” he said. “The best part of my day is talking with my patients, getting to know them, and being a part of their weight-loss/health-restoring process.” Because each patient—and each weight loss journey—is unique,
Dr. Dyslin offers the choice of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic gastric bypass, or conversion of lap band to sleeve or bypass. Board-certified by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Dyslin also performs robotic surgery and abdominal wall reconstruction for hernia repair as well as laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery right here in North Texas. He is quick to give credit where credit is due “I couldn’t do what I do without an outstanding bariatric team including my office staff, dietician, licensed counselor, and my OR team,” he said. “They give their best to my patients every day!” When not on the job, Dr. Dyslin enjoys hiking, gardening, and traveling to see his kids and get caught up on their lives. A firm believer in giving back, he participates in medical mission trips to Haiti and Nicaragua with his church and attends meetings to improve care in resource-limited environments. “These activities always remind me how bless-
ed we are to live in Texas and of our obligation to share our time and talent with those less fortunate.” Dr. Dyslin is now accepting new patients.

ATLAS VEIN CARE Tho ma s E id s o n , D O
True of false—Only middle-aged people get varicose veins—Crossing your legs is bad for your veins—Your diet doesn’t affect my vein health. Did you know that each of these is false? Arlington native Thomas Eidson does, and he spends his days addressing these and other vein-related issues with his growing patient base at Atlas Vein Care. As a physician board certified by the American Board of Osteopathic Family Physicians and a diplomate of the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine, he is uniquely qualified to partner with his patients suffering from a broad range of vein-related conditions. Yet phlebology wasn’t his first choice. “I always knew I wanted to be a doctor; wanted to care for people,” he said. “But it wasn’t until my residency, that I saw patients coming through the hospital complaining of leg pains that I realized vein care was my calling.” His patients would certainly agree. “To me there’s no greater satisfaction than hearing stories like the grandmother who’s able to spend days walking through Disney with her grandchild without the pain her legs used to cause her due to underlying vein problems,” Dr. Eidson said. “When we can change a life for the better like that, that’s a great day.” At Atlas Vein Care, Dr. Eidson focuses exclusively on the diagnoses and treatment of vein-related problems in the legs performing every medical vein treatment himself, without deferring to a nurse practitioner or physician assistant. Since 2011, he has safely and successfully performed thousands of vein treatments to help improve patient self-confidence and quality of life. “My goal and the goal of
my staff is to treat each patient as an individual, never just another patient,” he said. “It’s vital that we slow down and speak to each one and make them a part of their treatment and recovery.”

Luke 16:10 says, ‘If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won't be honest with greater responsibilities.’ From the moment you step into our clinic, you are family. Dr. Joseph Berman’s 37-year medical practice experience in Arlington has opened up new opportunities for his patients. He and his staff of nurses and therapists are all members of The International Cartilage Repair Society. His office and Arlington Orthopedic Associates have been designated an international teaching facility by the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee and Orthopedic Surgery. As one of only a few designated centers of excellence in joint restoration in the US, the Joint Preservation Center, of which Dr. Berman is the founder and medical director, now has the opportunity to offer patients new research and techniques in joint maintenance and repair. Dr. Berman recently completed a select FDA study and trial of a new artificial meniscus implant – the NuSurface. One of only 10 centers in the USA to offer an artificial meniscus, the “C-shaped” shock absorber in the knee, for patients who’ve lost their medial meniscus. The device, easily implantable as an outpatient procedure, can save years of wear on the joint and decrease or significantly postpone the need for future surgery. Enrollment has now been completed and data is being collated to present to the FDA. This may be an exciting answer to the question many patients ask “what are you going to put back in” after the medial meniscus is removed. Having completed one study, Dr. Berman has embarked on another FDA study. Using natural sea coral plugs, the study will show that articular cartilage can be encouraged to grow toward the coral plugs. This is one the first studies of joint and cartilage restoration in which the FDA is allowing us to treat osteoarthritis. All studies
prior have addressed injury to cartilage; this study may allow cartilage and bone growth which may preclude the indication of partial or total knee replacement. A potential exciting alternative to arthritis treatment. Lastly, there is genuine excitement about a very new option for patients with osteoarthritis. Available currently, Cryopreserved Human Amniotic Suspension Allograft has shown anti-inflammatory characteristics and may have the potential to help grow or stabilize articular cartilage through increase in natural growth factors. These stem cells, harvested from human placenta and umbilical cords, have shown some early evidence that this injection may decrease progression of the arthritic disease. A single injection into your knee done in the office, can offer relief from painful arthritis for as much as a year. That is twice the usual amount of time that many of the viscosupplements (rooster comb) or other preparations can boast. It can be repeated yearly if indicated.
Medicine is rapidly advancing. Many innovative techniques in arthroscopy and joint restoration did not exist when he started his practice. As new procedures become available, Dr. Berman is on the forefront of evaluating these options for his patients. He has created an informative website, JosephBermanMD.com, which informs patients about pathology, injury, and treatment of knee and shoulder problems. “The more the patient understands, the more realistic the expectations and the better the results,” he said. “The future of medicine in the USA will be dependent upon allowing many new and perhaps revolutionary techniques to become part of routine medical decisions.” CONTACT

INSTITUTE FOR HORMONAL BALANCE AND BIOTE Ma n d y Cot t en , F NP-C
There are few things in life more valuable than your health. Fortunately, there’s plenty each of us can do to work toward optimum wellness. Eat right. Exercise. Get plenty of rest. Yet even the most proactive wellness plan can’t prevent the aging process. In order to age gracefully, you need a trusted holistic health provider like Mandy Cotten. Mandy is in the quality of life business. For years now, she’s made a dramatic impact on the quality of life of men and women—in the Arlington and Irving areas and far beyond—through optimizing hormone levels with bioidentical hormone pellets placed under their skin. At the Institute for Hormonal Balance she and her staff strive to provide individualized treatment plans for patients in multiple stages of life—men and women alike. But bioidentical hormone replacement is only one of the ways they do this. “For our female patients, we begin with comprehensive well-woman care,” Mandy said. “An annual well-woman exam is a great time to go over any questions you have with your provider, talk about any symptoms you’re experiencing, and make sure your body is operating the way it should. We’re not concerned merely with longevity, but with living life to its fullest potential.” If hormone imbalance is an issue, Mandy may discuss the BioTE ® Method of Hormone Optimizatio which includes balancing estrogen, testosterone, thyroid, and vitamin status so they work together in the body to establish optimal health. “Our hormones are one of the most important regulators in our bodies,” Mandy said. “Hormones are designed to interact with specific areas of the body to keep
us functioning as normal, and as we age, hormone production declines resulting in side effects and symptoms. Unbalanced hormones place us at risk for disease processes and result in a variety of symptoms such as fatigue, mood changes, brain fog, and decreased stamina. Balanced hormones are essential for mental health and disease prevention” Mandy explained. The Institute for Hormonal Balance also specializes in aesthetic services, sexual wellness, and weight management. The office offers Botox, Dermal Fillers, SkinPen, and skin tightening. “SlimShots and the Doctor Supervised Weight Loss program are promising weight management support tools” states Mandy. “We believe that sexual wellness is extremely important to quality of life and relationship happiness. We are pleased to offer treatments for sexual dysfunction such as the O-Shot, Priapus Shot, Emsella (FDA approved device for incontinence), and other treatments.” Dr. Mandy Cotten, FNP-C received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from TCU
and completed her doctorate at Loyola University in New Orleans. “I’ve worked alongside Dr. Gary Donovitz, a world-renowned expert in hormone optimization and have been practicing the BioTE® Method of Hormone Optimizatio for five years, with wonderful success.” Mandy is also the director of BioTE Clinic and Research and trains other providers on the BioTE® Method of Hormone Optimization. When not on the job, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Casey, and their two children, Rylie & Ashton.

Doctors help people every day of course, but Dr. Frank Rodriguez is going out of his way to improve life for more than his own patients. He is, in fact, going all the way to Boston to raise money for a charity that is dear to his heart. This April 15th, Dr. Rodriguez will not only run his eighth Boston Marathon, but he will be raising money to benefit low-income students through Hale Reservation Inc. Hale Reservation Inc. is a private, non-profit organization that offers educational and recreational opportunities that develop self-confidence, inspire a passion for learning and encourage an appreciation for the natural environment. Their Hale Outdoor Learning Adventures (HOLA) program encourages Boston youth to lead active, healthy lifestyles, and resonates with Dr. Rodriguez because of his own lifelong love of the outdoors. “I loved exploring the outdoors when I was a kid,” explains Rodriguez. “Those carefree and adventurous days gave me confidence and helped make me the orthopedic surgeon I am today.” The HOLA program specifically addresses the “summer learning slide” that most adversely affects low-income students. It’s designed to encourage academic gains and develop social-emotional skills during the summer months so students are ready to begin the next grade in the fall. “Every child should be – and needs to be – outdoors,” emphasizes Rodriguez, “because exploring and enjoying nature provides an ideal opportunity to learn life lessons. I’m running this year’s Boston Marathon to give this opportunity to as many children as possible.”
Rodriguez may be doing the running, but everyone else can play a part in supporting this important cause. Dr. Rodriguez has offered to match dollar for dollar any amount donated, and stresses that donations of any size are welcome and greatly appreciated. “It’s easy to take outdoor activities for granted here in Texas. But in a large city like Boston, so many young girls and boys don’t have a chance to explore and experience nature. Simple activities such as fishing, swimming or just running around outdoors – they don’t get to do that. I hope by partnering with HOLA, we will be able to stimulate these kids to learn more.” Making a donation is as easy as visiting www.everydayhero.com and searching for Frank Rodriguez. Along with your financial support, you can leave a message of encouragement. When he’s not devoting his time to charitable interests, Dr. Rodriguez is dedicated to making life more enjoyable for those who suffer from hip, knee or shoulder pain. A fellowship trained and board cer-
tified orthopedic surgeon, in practice with Arlington Orthopedic Associates at both their Arlington and Mansfield clinics, he specializes in sports medicine and joint reconstruction. “It is very gratifying,” says Dr. Rodriguez, “to help someone in pain be able to resume their active lifestyle.” Whether you need help yourself with orthopedic pain, or want to help support a worthwhile charity, Dr. Rodriguez would love to hear from you. AUDIOLOGY EXPERTS Lisa B. Fell, AuD and Kristin Robbins, AuD
Hearing loss is a far more common health issue than most people realize. A diagnostic hearing evaluation by an audiologist can determine whether or not there’s need for intervention. “Some people have their hearing evaluated because their spouse or employer insisted on it,” said Dr. Lisa Fell, audiologist and co-owner of Audiology Experts in Arlington. “Others prolong the need for evaluation and endure daily life feeling that everyone mumbles or that family and social gatherings aren’t enjoyable anymore.” Many people never make the connection between these feelings and hearing loss. “But loss of hearing is not just a condition of aging or for those that enjoyed too much loud music in the 60s,” said Dr. Fell’s partner, Dr. Kristin Robbins. “It occurs much younger than the general public tends to realize.” “Untreated hearing loss can negatively impact daily communication and cognitive function and can lead to isolation and depression,” Dr. Fell said. It’s for that reason that she and Dr. Robbins devote themselves to providing thorough assessment, accurate diagnosis, and appropriate management of hearing loss for their patients. As doctors of audiology, Drs. Fell and Robbins offer immediate solutions for better and easier communication after the hearing has been evaluated. If the results indicate that hearing loss may be caused by a medical problem, they refer the patient for medical intervention. “But for a majority of the patients we see, hearing loss is not something medicine or surgery can improve,” Dr. Fell said. Over the past two decades, Drs. Robbins and Fell have witnessed hundreds of success stories. Unfortunately, not everyone
Untreated hearing loss can negatively impact daily communication and cognitive function and can lead to isolation and depression. seeks or finds help for their hearing loss. “The reason may be affordability, false information, or too much confusion in advertising,” Dr. Robbins said. “That’s why patient education is such an important part of our job. We take the time to listen to the patient and explain to them and their loved one, their unique diagnosis, and how it can best be helped.” “There’s no cookie-cutter recipe, when it comes to hearing loss,” said Dr. Fell. “Each person needs something different. It’s our job to evaluate their condition and make the appropriate recommendations for delivering the best success and happiest hearing aid wearers.” In our modern world, there’s increased opportunity for ear-damaging elements such as medication, loud music through earbuds, environmental noise, and disease. To prevent hearing loss, Drs. Fell and Rob-
bins recommend protection from exposure to loud noise, for extended periods of time. “And if hearing loss is suspected, get tested,” Dr. Robbins said. “If hearing instruments are recommended, then just do it.” “Don’t take for granted the position you have in your life and with the people around you,” Dr. Fell said. “Untreated hearing loss can really strain relationships, hinder your confidence in being your best, and make day-to-day living more stressful than it has to be.” Visit AudiologyExperts.com to find out more.

Your teeth are vital to your happiness every day. And when those teeth form into a smile, they can broadcast confidence, express appreciation, and reassure the ones you love. Each smile is unique and each is precious in its own way. Dr. Sandi Hamm spends her days making sure those smiles stay radiant, functional, and healthy. “One of the things I love about dentistry, is it can allow us to perform life changing procedures. Dental technology and knowledge are continually and rapidly advancing. That requires me to fervently seek to learn all that I can.” She does this through continuing education, above that which is required of her, and by participating in dental study clubs. “We meet regularly to listen to renown speakers and dental experts and to participate in complex dental planning sessions,” Dr. Hamm said. “It’s an exciting time to be practicing dentistry with so much to offer my patients.” Dr. Hamm and her seasoned staff handle everything from routine cleanings and check-ups to complex restorative and cosmetic dentistry. Specializing in complete smile makeovers including porcelain crowns/veneers, teeth whitening (in house or take home), teeth grinding relief, and gum disease therapy. We also offer Invisalign clear braces, dental implant restorations and implant retained dentures. We always try to find a solution to meet your dental goals. For Dr. Hamm, the most important part of her practice is not the state-of-theart technology she offers but the friendly, know-you-by-name service she and her staff provide. “I want to keep my practice relationship-oriented and create beautiful
smiles along the way,” she said. “I’ve been blessed with a staff who shares my philosophy of not only providing our patients, of all ages, with the very best dental medicine available but to genuinely care about them and their lives. We take a holistic approach to dentistry, because what affects the mouth affects the rest of the systems of the body.” Dr. Hamm has recently incorporated Simple Snoring Solutions into her practice. Many patients have snoring issues or sleep apnea. We can help patients that cannot tolerate a CPAP machine with a small oral appliance. We work with many local physicians to help patients with sleep apnea and snoring. Please call us for a complimentary consultation if you believe this would help you. 360 Family and Implant Dentistry is a progressive general dental office offering a variety of dental services including dental implants and a full menu of cosmetic dentistry options. In their mission to provide the Grand Prairie community with comprehensive dentistry, they tailor care to each individual patient, focusing on learning their needs and earning their trust by providing consistent treatment options and fees. MEET DR. GONZALES Dr. Christopher Gonzales is a student of life—and of his chosen field of dentistry. Passionate about discovering the latest opportunities and evolving dental materials, he chose to further his studies with a focus on prosthodontics, the dental specialty primarily concerned with the restoration and replacement of lost or damaged teeth. Sometimes called the “architects of the smile,” prosthodontists train in all the elements of a beautiful, functional, and natural-looking smile—not just teeth, but gums, lips, and facial features. “When someone seeks my help, I want to know I’m doing all I can, personally and professionally; using all my available faculties to help them,” he said. “My work in the prosthodontic field allows me to look for new and better technologies for my patients that are less invasive and more convenient. I’ve enjoyed learning how to create the dental restorations I deliver.” MEET DR. NGUYEN Ticole is one of those rare people who settled on her career path early in life. “When I was in 10th grade, I knew I
wanted to pursue dentistry,” she said. “I participated in summer dental programs at Baylor Dental School. After I graduated, I worked at a corporate dental office for a while and was blessed to work with an amazing and wonderful senior dentist who became my mentor and encouraged me to open my own office. Dr. Nguyen understands not everyone has a positive opinion of going to the dentist. But she’s all about changing that. “I didn’t have very good dental experiences growing up, so I went into dentistry to make things different for my patients,” she said. “Fear of the dentist and the dental office is a very real thing. I’ve had many fillings and crowns, so I’m empathetic with my patients. I understand that, and I’m dedicated to changing it.” Drs. Gonzales and Nguyen are now accepting new patients.

There’s a special bond between a woman and her OB-GYN. Whether she’s a preteen experiencing her first period, a young bride anticipating the birth of a child, or a mature woman navigating the challenges of menopause, each of us needs and deserves a healthcare provider who will listen and understand, someone who’ll educate and empower us to be our own healthcare advocate. A doctor who will partner with us to care for ourselves— body, mind, and spirit. HEALTHCARE PARTNER For generations of Mansfield women, that partner is Dr. Paul Daum of Mansfield Miracles. Since 1983, Dr. Daum has placed an emphasis on one-on-one care with a highly-personal touch, for his patients at every stage of life. He cares for both low-risk and high-risk pregnancies and offers minimally-invasive gynecologic surgery. Because no two patients are exactly alike, Dr. Daum does his best to slow things down and get to know each woman, to leave no question unanswered, helping each patient take the best care of herself. After all, who cares more about your body and your wellness than you do? PIONEER IN HIS F IELD Dr. Daum has witnessed—and pioneered—a revolution of healthcare advancements in obstetrics and gynecology. Throughout his three decades in solo practice, he’s been at the forefront of many new technologies. He performed the first ever enodmetrial ablation, the first laporoscopically-assisted vaginal hysterectomy, the first hysteroscopic resection of uterine fibroids,
and the first laparoscopic hysterectomy performed within the Methodist Hospital System. He trains other physicians, educating and helping them develop their skills in these techniques. MEET D R . Dr. Lindsey Dietrich, orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine physician, is passionate about communicating with her patients, empowering them to make their own decisions, and setting individualized goals for every person that comes through her door. Together with her dynamic team at Sideline Orthopedics & Sports, a Texas Health Physicians Group practice, she provides comprehensive sports medicine services in an innovative new facility but with the same patient-centric attitude that has endeared her to so many. “My upbringing in South Louisiana was extremely family and friend-oriented,” she said. “I’ve tried to bring that same never-met-a-stranger attitude and level of hospitality to our practice, combined with an it-takes-a-village mentality. I’m blessed to work with a team of staff and providers who treat every patient like family. Our team approach has allowed us to develop the highest quality comprehensive sports medicine and orthopedic practice in the area, without compromising compassion and friendliness.” “This energetic team also believes in the value of community service,” Dr. Dietrich said. “I am involved on the sideline of sporting events throughout the Metroplex. Additionally, I help organize injury prevention education, provide community education on musculoskeletal wellness, and act as a preceptor for several high school, undergraduate, and graduate students hoping to pursue careers in medicine. We offer complimentary injury evaluations and x-rays for hundreds of student athletes annually. This year we’re celebrating
our fifth year of giving back to our student athletes.” In 2018, Dr. Dietrich and her partners opened a new office within a combined sports and recovery facility serving Arlington, Mansfield, and surrounding areas. “It’s a unique model that demonstrates the most comprehensive sports medicine care in the metroplex,” she said. “That includes injury evaluation and treatment with our fellowship-trained sports medicine physicians, human performance training with Athlete Training and Health, ongoing research and recovery with Texas Health Sports Medicine, and concussion management all under the same roof.” Find out more at DFWSportsDoc.com. In her spare time, Dr. Dietrich enjoys grilling, running, yoga, traveling, listening to live music, spending time with her two year old son and trying to convince her parents and siblings to join her in Texas!

Dr. John Bauer can’t believe it. (Where did the time go?) But he’s now seeing his fourth generation of patients. And he’s been blessed to do it all with his wife, Terri, by his side. Now along with their son, Dr. Cody Bauer, they’re treating grandparents, parents, children, then—amazingly— those kids have grown, and their kids are sitting in the dental chair. For more than 39 years, the Mansfield community has known where to go for down home, know-you-by-name family dentistry. From routine maintenance of your teeth and gums to conservative restorative dentistry—all the way to dramatic smile makeovers, the Bauer family of dental professionals at Mansfield Family Dentistry is Mansfield’s one-stop dental shop. Drs. John and Cody Bauer offer everything from dentures, crowns, and bridges to extractions and dental implants. And with Terri Bauer running the office and coordinating patient care, this family can handle it all. They even offer Invisalign Clear Tooth Aligners for straightening teeth and beautiful porcelain veneers to correct chips and gaps for a dazzling smile. CO NS ERVATIVE CARE The Drs. Bauer place an emphasis on relationships: with their patients, with their family, and with their community, offering Mansfield a true “dental home”. It’s no wonder they’re caring for their fourth generation of Mansfield residents. Because it’s always better to preserve the natural tooth, they emphasize patient education and empowerment, taking things slow, simply talking with their patients, teaching them to advocate for their own oral health, to keep natural teeth and gums healthy and intact.
COS ME TI C D EN T I ST RY Whether you’re repairing damage to your teeth or want to make a dramatic change, Drs. John and Cody Bauer can sit with you, listen to your wishes and desires, and compile a cosmetic dentistry treatment plan, to give you that fully-functioning, gorgeous smile of your dreams. They’ve invested in the very latest dental advancements, including laser dentistry, 3D CT scanner, pain-free injections, digital impression technology, and gum disease laser therapy. Why not finish off your beautiful, healthy smile with in-office laser tooth whitening. I MPL AN TS When the natural tooth is beyond help, the Drs. Bauer can provide you with a dental implant that’s undistinguishable from your natural tooth. A permanent, natural-looking tooth that’s anchored to your jaw with a titanium post, it gives you the same function and biting strength as your natural tooth and preserves your facial structure. CH I L D REN' S D E N T I ST RY For children as young as three, the Mansfield Family Dentistry team takes it slow, talking to kids, explaining each thing they
do before they do it, and taking extra time to educate parent and child about caring for the only set of teeth they’ll ever have. Find out more at MansfieldDentistry. com or call (817) 473-0291 to schedule an appointment.

PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY OF MANSFIELD Danny Wrig h t , D D S a n d Debo ra h C . S ul l iva n , D DS , M S
When a medical practice is repeatedly voted best in their field, there’s a reason. When that practice is Pediatric Dentistry of Mansfield—voted best pediatric dentist five years running— there are, in fact, several reasons. To begin with Drs. Deborah Sullivan and Danny Wright share a philosophy of empowering a generation of confident, fearless dental patients and helping parents raise cavity-free kids. “I truly believe God has gifted me to calm, comfort, and help other people— especially the littlest ones,” Dr. Sullivan said. Dr. Danny Wright is totally onboard. “We view it as a privilege to be a part of our young patients’ lives and take pride in educating them in establishing healthy oral habits,” he said. “Our aim is to provide a fun, non-threatening environment that allows children to actually enjoy coming to the dentist.” Parents couldn’t agree more. Drs. Sullivan and Wright and their staff hear from astonished parents, all the time, whose children ask when they can return to the dentist. “God calls us to serve others and to try to bring joy to other people,” Dr. Wright said. “Our goal is to take care of our patients’ dental needs. But more importantly, we want to do it in a way that’s pleasant and easy for the child to tolerate.” At Pediatric Dentistry of Mansfield, parents are included in the dental experience. Whether it's a new patient exam, a regular check-up and cleaning, or a restorative treatment, parents are encouraged to accompany their children into the treatment areas. Dentist,
hygienist, and assistant engage with the parents and educate them about helping their children develop optimum dental hygiene habits, discussing diet and sharing useful hints. In their continuing mission to “to treat the child, not the tooth”, they gear advice toward each child’s individual needs—whether it’s steering children with braces toward a spot that’s being missed when brushing or coming up with creative solutions for brushing a reluctant toddler’s teeth. Drs. Sullivan and Wright use only white fillings and aesthetic white crowns, whenever possible. All dental treatment is planned to keep children as relaxed as possible. They provide all levels of anxiety-reducing sedation and work with parents to determine the best modality for each individual child. When necessary, both doctors can also provide treatment at Cook’s Children’s Hospital, Methodist Mansfield Hospital, or Texas Pediatric Surgery Center.
Both doctors are Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Twice a year, the Pediatric Dentistry of Mansfield staff volunteers at Mission Arlington helping underserved children, who otherwise may never see a dentist. They continue that helping spirit throughout the year by working with the Save-A-Smile Foundation, Give Kids A Smile, and dental mission trips to countries around the world. Pediatric Dentistry of Mansfield offers convenient before and after-school appointments and 24-hour emergency call service. They are now accepting new patients.

The mission of Accent Podiatry Associates is simply this—to remain on the leading edge of knowledge and technology while providing compassionate quality care for disorders, conditions, and injuries affecting the foot and ankle. And their patients couldn’t be more grateful. After all, it’s easy not to think about your feet, when everything is working and pain-free. But when conditions such as plantar fasciitis, neuromas, hammertoes, bunions, flat feet, heel spurs, or Achilles tendonitis greet you each morning and accompany you to bed each night, it can be hard to think of much else. Drs. Dharmesh Bhakta, Keyvan Ganz, Shae Paschal, Jinal Mehta, Jacob Jasper, and Steve Silvery understand. It’s why they spend their days looking for and treating the root cause of these and other foot or ankle problems—not merely masking symptom but discovering and addressing the source of your pain or dysfunction. Daily pain is not just a symptom of aging. You don’t need to suck it up and deal with it. The Accent Podiatry doctors and staff are here to help you discover the source of your pain and treat it. They’ve established a one-stop-shop to handle anything from simple fungal toenails to complex foot and ankle surgery. They place an emphasis on patient education, concisely presenting all options to their patients then partnering with them to pursue the least invasive treatment first—only progressing to surgery, when all conservative options have been explored.
Accent Podiatry is more than just a healthcare practice. It is a group of individuals who collectively make up a close family that’s involved in the care and wellbeing of their patients, neighbors, and friends. The Accent Podiatry offices at 3050 South Center Street in Arlington and 221 Regency Parkway in Mansfield are fun places to visit, with doctors and staff always laughing and joking around. CITYVIEW AUDIOLOGY & HEARING AIDS, INC. Diane Bl a is in g , A uD , A DA , A B A , FA A A
It should have been no surprise to Diane Blaising’s family when she found her calling helping others live a better life through improved hearing. Way back in elementary school, it was a young Diane who wowed her classmates with a science project demonstrating bone conduction hearing. “This was back when we had portable record players,” she said. “I took the record player to school and instead of using the needle on the record, I had a sewing needle stuck into a pencil eraser. We’d hold the wooden end of the pencil between our teeth and place the needle on the turning record and could hear the record through our teeth and bones in our skulls. It’s not coming through your ear canals. It’s bone conduction hearing.” The workings of the human auditory system haven’t ceased to amaze Diane. Now as a board-certified doctor of audiology, she’s discovered she likes the human side of audiology even more than the medical/science side. “I love the patient contact and making a difference in the lives of my patients the most,” she said. After more than 23 years serving as an audiologist, the last 11 with her own practice, Dr. Blaising sees herself as a source for total hearing care. “I want my office to serve as a resource center for everything hearing,” she said. “I opened Cityview Audiology & Hearing Aids because I wanted to do more for my patients. For instance, we’re starting a free aural rehab class for anyone who wants to learn coping strategies for people with hearing loss and their families. Sometimes family members need a little education about how to communicate with the one with hearing difficulties.”
Dr. Blaising says she has the best staff on the planet. “They join me in my mission to help our patients obtain a better quality of life by enhancing their ability to communicate with their families and friends, for deeper, more meaningful relationships,” she said. “We love helping working men and women be more successful in their careers. We live in a time when hearing aid technology is extremely sophisticated and we have the ability to treat any hearing loss successfully. Every patient is different. So we stay abreast of advancements in the programming software that allows us to correctly fit hearing instruments to each patient we see.” Dr. Diane Blaising began her career in audiology in 1992. She received her doctor of audiology degree from the Arizona School of Health Sciences and her master’s degree in audiology from the Callier Center for Communication Disorders at the University of Texas at Dallas. She has years of experience working with hearing-impaired adults and children
in otolaryngologists’ offices in Louisville and as a pediatric audiologist at the Louisville Deaf Oral School. Dr. Blaising is board certified in audiology by the American Board of Audiology and has twice been given the Ace Award for continuing education. She is pleased to announce that she will be bringing another audiologist to the practice in 2019 who will offer services for patients with cochlear implants. “This will be an exciting addition to the practice, said Dr. Blaising.” Visit Find out more at CityviewHearing.com.

Dr. Edward M. Mairura and Dr. John R. Harris are affectionately known to their patients as “the bone docs”. They understand that whether they’re treating an octogenarian who’s still young at heart, a school or pro athlete chomping at the bit to get back in the game, or a weekend warrior who needs activities to destress from the week, their training, experience, and compassion can make all the difference. “We love listening to our patient’s needs, getting to know them, and providing them with the best, evidence-based options to maximize non-surgical treatment first, before considering surgery,” Dr. Mairura said. “We work with each patient to meet their expectations and allow them to go back to the daily activities and hobbies they love.” A desire to help change people’s lives with new and exciting medical technology is what led Dr. Harris to a career in medicine. “I developed a hobby of woodworking early in medical school,” he said. “I fell in love with orthopaedics from the first case I saw that involved drills, screwdrivers, and tools that were just like the ones in my garage. It was fascinating—and I was hooked.” For Dr. Mairura that motivation looked a little different. “During medical school, my uncle was diagnosed with osteosarcoma of the pelvis,” he said “I took him to his appointments and met his treating orthopaedic surgeon. I was intrigued by his bedside manner, his compassion, level of knowledge, and communication skills. We kept in touch and he invited me to work in his lab and perform research. It was during this time that I decided to become an
orthopaedic surgeon; to one day help people with musculoskeletal issues the way Dr. Yaszemski helped my uncle.” Now, he specializes in helping his ever-growing patient base with stateof-the-art hip and knee replacements, arthroscopic treatment of knee and shoulder sports injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, sports-related injuries, and pediatric and adult trauma. Dr. Harris offers the latest techniques for treating focal cartilage injuries in the knee and shoulder. “I also have the most up-to-date training on arthroscopic techniques for shoulder and knee injuries, joint replacement, and carpal tunnel syndrome,” he said. “I also treat fractures and soft tissue injuries around the body and have a special interest in complex cartilage and meniscal injuries in the knee.” Although both physicians are experienced surgeons, they only consider surgery after all conservative options
have been exhausted. “Advances in our field have been remarkable,” Dr. Harris said. “Where traditional surgery used to mean months of painful recovery time, newer less-invasive laparoscopic surgery has our patients back doing the things they love, within weeks.” Both surgeons are devoted husbands and active members of our community and Dr. Harris is a proud father of four energetic kids. LOSE THE SLOUCH. Whether sitting in your chair at work, standing in the checkout line at the grocery store, or binge watching a favorite show, slouching and slumping can make you feel blah. Not only can better posture help with digestive issues and lower back problems, but research suggests that proper posture may help you feel more enthusiastic, less fatigued, and boost your brain activity.
TAKE BREATHING BREAKS. Slow, deep breaths can relieve stress, reduce heart rate, lower blood pressure, and send a signal to the rest of the body to relax. Breathe in slowly and deeply through your nose, hold for a count of three, and breathe out through your mouth, all while envisioning your abdomen expanding and contracting with each breath. Just five of these breaths can relieve pent-up tension and anxiety.
WASH UP. Keeping hands clean and germ-free is a first line of defense against illness. If you’ve developed a speedy wash habit, spend just a few seconds more time soaping up and rinsing. It takes around 20 seconds to properly wash your hands with soap and water.
EMBRACE THE DAILY FLOSS. Flossing your teeth, along with brush-
ing and regular dental checkups, is essential for removing bacteria and keeping your teeth and gum disease-free. Research indicates that flossing can significantly reduce periodontal disease, which has been linked to a host of chronic diseases.
STRETCH IT OUT. Harvard Health reminds us that stretching keeps muscles flexible, strong, and healthy. We need flexibility to maintain a range of motion in the joints. Without it, muscles shorten and become tight, putting you at risk for joint pain, strains, and muscle damage. Stretching has other health benefits, including stress relief.
EAT SLOWER. Quickly gobbling down your food may lead to overeating and health problems such as reflux and indigestion. Eat mindfully and chew your food thoroughly. Slow down and savor the flavors.
EMBRACE POSITIVITY. Research shows a positive attitude can build a healthier immune system and boosts overall health. The next time you notice a negative thought entering your mind, recognize it, challenge it, and turn it around to gain control over your mood and ultimately, your sense of happiness.

he quality of our skeletal structure has a direct effect on our appearance, vitality, and energy level. The better we stand and move around, the more youthful we will look and feel.
WHAT ARE BONES MADE OF? Our bones are actually living tissue that constantly changes throughout our lifetime. The bone in our bodies is a combination of collagen, a protein that provides a soft framework, and calcium phosphate, a mineral that adds strength and hardens the framework. Throughout our lifetime old bone is removed (resorption), and new bone is added to the skeleton (formation). Generally, bone formation outpaces resorption until our peak bone mass is reached around age 30. After that, bone resorption slowly begins to exceed bone formation. In some cases this reversal is what leads to osteoporosis.
WHAT DOES OSTEOPOROSIS DO? Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens bones to the point where they break easily, and it especially affects bones in the hip, spine, and wrist. It’s often called a “silent disease” because you may not notice any change until you break a bone.
The interior of your bones looks something like a honeycomb. With osteoporosis, the spaces in the honeycomb grow larger, and the bone forming the honeycomb gets smaller. Meanwhile, the outer shell of your bones gets thinner, and this combination of interior and exterior changes leads to weaker bones that are more prone to breaking easily. The risk of osteoporosis grows as you get older. At the time of menopause, women may lose bone quickly for several years. In men, the loss of bone mass is slower, but by age 65 to 70, men and women are losing bone at the same rate.
HOW DO I PREVENT IT? Most people believe that thinning bones are inevitable as we age, but recent research challenges this idea. Actually, there are things you can do at any age to prevent weakened bones. These include eating foods rich in calcium and vitamin D. And a study at the University of Toronto shows that aerobic exercise such as weight training, walking, hiking, jogging, climbing stairs, and tennis improved the amount of calcium in the upper thighs and upper body, two areas prone to fractures. Even dancing helps, so get off the couch, turn up the music, and cut a rug!

lastic surgery has certainly come a long way since Gaspare Tagliacozzie, who is considered the father of plastic surgery. He became famous for performing reconstructive surgery on soldiers whose noses had been amputated in war during the 1500s. Despite his fame, the first recorded nose surgery took place around 600 B.C. in India.
POWER THE MOST POPULAR PLASTIC AND COSMETIC SURGERY PROCEDURES, YEAR AFTER YEAR BY LA RU E V. G I LLESP I E
Needless to say, there have been a few improvements since then! These days, elective medical cosmetic surgery is consistently gaining in popularity for changing everything from the shape of your nose to the size of your belly, the contour of your breasts, and the tautness of your tush. In 2017, $16.7 billion was spent on cosmetic procedures, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). The top five surgeries for that year include breast augmentations, liposuction, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, and tummy tucks. Interestingly, buttock augmentation beat the tummy tuck in 2016 to claim a top five spot. “These surgeries are consistently popular because they address things that consistently bother people. Popular culture hasn’t changed,” said Alan Matarasso, MD, president of the ASPS, who practices in Manhattan, New York. There are more and more attempts to address these issues non-surgically with fillers, lasers, and other methods that have little downtime, but, as Dr. Matarasso said, “Nothing can replace what surgery does.”

“THESE SURGERIES ARE CONSISTENTLY POPULAR BECAUSE THEY ADDRESS THINGS THAT CONSISTENTLY BOTHER PEOPLE...”
This procedure involves using breast implants (silicone or saline) or fat transfer to enhance the size of the breasts and improve the balance of hip and breast contours. There are all kinds of shapes and sizes of implants to choose from and various ways to get these implants (or fat transfers) surgically. It is best to discuss all options with an experienced and qualified plastic surgeon.
More commonly called a nose job, this procedure is used to reshape the nose for aesthetic reasons, to create facial harmony, or to correct structural defects in the nose that make it hard for some people to breathe. “Rhinoplasty has amazing staying power simply because the nose sits in the center of the face,” said Dr. Shah. “Rhinoplasty surgery has an incredibly high satisfaction rate, but as it is considered the most difficult cosmetic surgery procedure, it should only be performed by a specialist.”
“[Breast augmentation] remains in the top spot because women will continue to embrace flattering cleavage,” said Manish Shah, MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon practicing in Denver, Colorado. “What we will see is an increase in requests for fat transfer to the breasts as the trend to smaller augmentations continues and more women try to avoid the use of implants. [But] implants will still be king.”
LIPOSUCTION While minimally invasive procedures such as CoolSculpting and Zerona have gained serious traction in the last few years, the gold standard for fat removal is still liposuction. First approved in the United States in 1982, liposuction slims and reshapes areas of your body by removing stubborn fat deposits. Liposuction can treat the thighs, hips, buttocks, abdomen, upper arms, back, inner knee, cheeks, chin, neck, calves, and ankles. It cannot, however, treat cellulite. For best results, you need to be at a healthy weight and have good elasticity in your skin.
EYELID SURGERY C a l led blepha roplast y, t his procedure enhances the appearance of the eyes to make them look rejuvenated and more youthful. Surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids or lower or both to treat sagging skin, wrinkles, fatty deposits such as bags under your eyes, and drooping eyelids. “Whether you’re doing upper or lower, it’s a very quick recovery,” said Dr. Matarasso. “You can do it on a Friday and you can put makeup on and go to work the next Friday.” He also said surgery for bags under the eyes is permanent. That’s a plus!
TUMMY TUCK Both weight loss and childbirth lead to laxity of the abdominal wall, loose skin, and stretch marks. “A tummy tuck can fix most, if not all, of these problems and reshape a body into a far more flattering form,” said Dr. Shah. “Clothes then fit better and a sense of wellbeing develops when the patient looks in the mirror. As far as tummy tucks are concerned, they will be a mainstay of plastic surgery forever.”
ARK YOUR CALENDAR
Visit the dentist twice a year unless you have periodontal disease. If disease is present, you should see a dentist or periodontist four times a year.
Dental hygiene helps with all body systems. The mouth is the first part of the entire digestive tract. Your dentist and hygienist work to reduce inflammation, which plays a part in heart disease, stroke, preterm labor, and diabetes. They will also talk about sleep disturbances such as apnea and provide oral cancer screenings. With regular patients, hygienists are able to see systematic changes early.
COMMON SENSE FACTS THAT’LL HELP YOU RETAIN YOUR SMILE FOR YEARS TO COME
If you’ve kept your smile
While regular dental care is essential, your daily oral hygiene practices are just as important. It’s no secret that you should brush your teeth for a minimum of two minutes at least twice a day.
sterling after all these years, congratulations! You might think you’ve already got a handle on what constitutes adequate care, but it never hurts to understand how to remain in good condition. And if you need to brush up, read on!
Think of your mouth as quadrants, which means a mere thirty seconds of brushing per quadrant. Don’t neglect brushing your tong ue, g ums, and the inside of your cheeks. Once per day, you should plan on devoting a little extra time for f lossing. One dental hygienist we consulted offered this professional (tongue-in-cheek?) advice: “Use the fuzzy end of the
toothbrush and floss only the teeth you want to keep!”
TIPS FOR A DAZZLING SMILE You should replace your toothbrush every three months. If you have trouble remembering to do this, the next time you change your brush, consider writing the date on it in permanent marker. Drink plenty of water and eat crunchy fruits and vegetables. A healthy diet will not only make your teeth healthier, but you healthier. Limit sugar and acidic foods as they can break down tooth enamel.
SOMETHING TO CHEW ON Some health conditions and and medications cause dry mouth, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease if left untreated. It’s a common cause of dental decay in older adults, but there are ways to remedy and prevent it. •
Limit caffeine and avoid all tobacco products.
Avoid mouthwashes containing alcohol. There are alcohol free options.
Avoid over-the-counter antihistamines, which can exacerbate dry mouth.
Use xylitol mints to stimulate the flow of saliva.
Sip water throughout the day.

AMY’S PAINT EFFECTS for a home you’re happy to come home to BY MEREDITH KNIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAUREN MEDEAN
Some women are perfectly content living in a cookie-cutter house; a home that’s not so different from those on either side of it. But others of us want to surround ourselves with expressions of the unique life we live; to invite guests into a home that speaks of who we are, what we love, and how we spend our time. Those are Amy Wohkinger’s people! If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind accent wall, a hand-painted furniture design, or a renovation that takes your home from hohum to WOW, go ahead and spend some time on Amy’s website at AmyFauxEffects.Houzz.com. (no “s”). You’ll see examples of just how personal your personal spaces can be. Amy is one of those rare people who “sees” a finished project, long before she starts to work. But as gifted as she is with a paintbrush, she realizes the greatest tools she has are her ears. With each project, she spends time just listening to her client’s dreams and wishes for their home. She knows the right questions to ask about their personal style and lifestyle, to capture their vision for their project, before making it a reality. And she’s happy to say that many of those clients have become lifelong friends. “Everything we create is unique to a certain client,” she said. “The better we know and understand that client, the better the end result. My ultimate
outcome on any project is to create a home my clients are happy to come home to.” Amy first arrived in the US in 1982, as an exchange student from South Africa. “This is where I discovered the wonderful world of interior design,” she said. But it was while completing her design degree she awakened her artistic side and decided to marry the two gifts. “My joy comes in using my artist eye and my design knowledge to make an unloved space or piece of furniture a beautiful part of a home again, “she said. “Casting vision and taking the journey to create a beautiful space is a wonderful adventure for me—and my client.” Amy says her designs aren’t so much about what happens to be “in style”, at any given time. “It’s about what you like, what inspires you, and what your personal style says about you,” she said. “I always knew I’d work in the creative field. The need to change things—to improve things—is what drives me.” Amy moved to this area in 2009 and realized her dream of becoming a US citizen. The joy of her life is her two children. “My son owns Cake-aholics Bakery,” she said. “He’s also extremely artistic. My daughter will graduate in June and will pursue her career as a police officer with the Carrollton P.D. I couldn’t be prouder of them both.” Now it’s time for them to be proud of Mama, as Amy was awarded the Best of Houzz award for her customer service, for the third year in a row. Her 25-year design firm was chosen by more than 2.1 million homebuilding, remodeling, and design industry professionals. Congrats, Amy! So, whether you’re looking for a total overhaul of everything or just a fauxbrick effect in your kitchen, an update to a tired, old fireplace in the family room, or an exciting, new finish on your bathroom or kitchen cabinets, Amy and her team are ready to transform your space and give you a home like no other—a home you’re happy to come home to. looring products such as cork and bamboo are trendy for more reasons than their ecofriendly sustainability. Bamboo flooring has a chic, exotic look while needing little maintenance. And although it’s susceptible to scratches like traditional hardwood floors, bamboo can be refinished. Cork, taken from the bark of the cork oak tree, is considered easy to maintain with no wax. Other benefits include a cushioning effect under your feet, being sound-resistant, and having natural insulation properties. Reclaimed wood brings character and charm into your home along with a history that new and engineered wood just can’t match. Since there’s extra labor required to retrieve the wood, clean it, re-mill if needed, and remove nails that still may be embedded, it’s not the least expensive product, but it is one of the most environmentally friendly options available. Gone are the days of shiny, slippery tile floors. A wide array of styles and patterns are making tile more popular than ever. Mosaic tile, for example, comes in a variety of interesting shapes, including subway, small squares, chevron, and herringbone. Incredibly realistic wood-look tile is a durable alternative to wood f looring, and is especially practical in areas that can get wet like the kitchen,
bathroom, and mudroom or entry. Plus, many faux wood textures are anti-slip. If you adore traditional hardwood, dark and cooltoned f looring continues to pick up steam. As gorgeous as it looks, very dark hardwood can be challenging to keep clean and maintain. If you love the warmth of a dark floor, consider going a bit lighter with dark walnut or coffee brown to get the look you want with less hassle. When it comes to versatility and low maintenance, it’s tough to beat modern luxury vinyl flooring. Vinyl has made an impressive comeback and you can find almost any type of color, size, and style of luxury vinyl—even a hardwood look. Love the luxurious feel of carpet under your feet? Have no fear! Low-pile carpets are easier to clean, soft, and resistant to odor. If you have pets and kids and are concerned about carpet maintenance, not to worry. Several manufacturers offer an advanced pet proof carpet with a stain, spill, and soil resistance treatment. Whatever your lifestyle and flooring budget may be, find a trusted flooring provider with a good reputation who will work with you to understand your requirements, then recommend options that will meet your needs.

Spring is in the air and the phones are ringing at Baldi Gardens Landscape. On the other end of the line are dreams—dreams of landscapes transformed under the skillful eye and veteran hands of these local experts in gardening, lawn care, drainage systems, hardscapes, water features, and outdoor lighting. For two decades, Ricardo Baldi and his team have transformed the outdoor dreams of thousands of home owners and business owners into reality, through proper design, maintenance techniques, and exceptional customer service. Ricardo founded Baldi Gardens with one simple principle in mind: to provide unparalleled customer support and outstanding quality services. His efforts have been rewarded a thousand-fold. And over more than twenty years in the landscaping business, he’s has never lost his passion for horticulture or his thirst to learn more about it. It all began when Ricardo started gardening as a hobby. Although busy raising his family and working fulltime at Frito Lay, he started tackling gardening jobs for a handful of clients. As his skills and experience grew so did the demand for his landscaping and eventually, he left his secure job to grow his landscaping company. And Baldi Gardens Landscape was born. Over the past two decades, Ricardo and his crews have provided landscape design and installation, hardscaping, landscape maintenance, outdoor lighting, and state-ofthe-art drainage systems for families and
businesses across the Greater Arlington area. They understand that no two projects are the same, because no two families or businesses are the same. Ricardo has been joined by his son, Giuseppe, who shares his father’s philosophy of giving the customer more than they expect on every job, every time. The project videos and photographs at BaldiGardens.com speak of the satisfaction of clients all over this area who have enthusiastically recommended the team to their family, friends, neighbors, and have called upon the Baldi Garden team, each time they’ve relocated or embarked upon another landscape project. Over the years, the business has continued to see substantial growth and now employs over 15 dedicated, hardworking team members, many of whom have enjoyed five to 15 years with the company. “We’ve never stopped seeking more knowledge about what we do,” Giuseppe said. “We do weekly training with our teams to ensure they have the knowledge necessary to perform their work at the highest standard. We also encourage our employees to earn industry certifications and licenses.” Ricardo learned early on that, if he took care of his employees, they’d take care of his customers. And his Baldi Garden customers are the beneficiaries of all that experience, knowledge, innovation, and hard work. As their website says, “We don’t just sell landscaping with a guarantee, we sell outdoor solutions with peace of mind.”

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN PICKING A NEIGHBORHOOD
uying a new home can be an over whelming and scar y t ask—but it doesn’t have to be. Selecting a new neighborhood to live and raise a family in can end up being one of the most fun and exciting decisions you get to make in your life. You also have a lot more power when it comes to making that decision than you might think. A new neighborhood opens up an endless amount of possibilities, new adventures, and friendships. One important factor for those who have children or are planning on having children in the near future is picking a neighborhood with quality schools. Even if you don’t have children—or
yours are already grown up and out of your house—a neighborhood in close proximity to schools is a hot commodity and will help increase the value of your home over time.
out the website WalkScore.com. You can find out the walk score rating of various neighborhoods, and get other useful information like crime and safety reports.
Another thing to consider when picking a new neighborhood is the walkability. Living a short drive from parks, shops, grocery stores, and restaurants is one thing, but having the additional benefit of being able to walk to these attractions provides a good source of exercise, and is good for the environment. Neighborhoods with sidewalks are great and help keep you off the road and away from automobiles. Being able to walk or ride your bike to a nearby park is also a great activity to enjoy with your children. If you want some help in determining if a neighborhood is good for walking, check
One final thing to consider when choosing a neighborhood is your commute. Nobody likes to be in their car longer than they have to, so mapping out how far away your new house is from your job could play a huge part in choosing if you want to live in a certain neighborhood. Take into consideration if you will need to get on any large freeways or busy roads during your drive. Finding a neighborhood that makes it easy to get to and from work will have you spending more time doing the things you love.
WHAT TO LOOK
FOR WHEN SELECTING A HOUSE
el ling your rea ltor t hat you want a home with four bedrooms as opposed to just three is a common r e q u e s t w h e n s e a r c hing for a new home to buy. But have you ever considered the placement of these bedrooms? When trying to decide between what home to purchase, consider the location of the four bedrooms. If you have young kids that need more attention, maybe you want your master bedroom to be on the same floor as your young child. Are your kids a little bit older and more independent? Then a house with bedrooms staggered on different floors could be the better option for you. Another thing to consider when making a decision on a new home is the size of the yard. For younger adults with children, having a large backyard might be very important. It allows you to have some peace and quiet in the house, while your kids get to run, jump, and play outside. When selecting a new home, consider if you will be able to watch your kids from the comfort of your kitchen or living room as they play in the backyard. Having a clear view of the yard from inside the house will mean you will be able to stay inside and take care of household chores and still be able to keep an eye on your kids. One final thing to consider when selecting a new home how move-in ready it is. Make sure you ask a lot of questions about the history of the home. When was it built? How many previous owners has it had? When was the roof last replaced? Getting your potential new home inspected and walking through it multiple times is a great way to know exactly what you are purchasing before you move in. Will the previous owners be leaving behind the appliances? Do you need to update cabinets or replace carpeting? Making sure you have a fully realized image of what your home will be like when you move in is important and will help you avoid feeling surprised by finding out something wasn’t what it seemed at first glance. march 2019
feature | NEW YEAR, NEW HOME
REASONS TO PURCHASE A NEW HOME s you get older, acquire more possessions, and possibly start a family, that first home may start to feel cramped. Extra space you once had begins to fill up with boxes and new members of the family. That in-home office becomes a bedroom and the coat closet is now filled with random junk. Purchasing a larger home with more space can help to alleviate this issue. But the opposite of this is true as well. Once your kids leave the nest, you may find yourself with too much house to manage. Why heat extra bedrooms when nobody sleeps in them? Why spend all day cleaning a 3,000 square foot home when it's just you and your spouse living there? Downsizing can be an extremely cost-effective solution as you get older. Plus, if you switch from a two-story home to a single story ranch, you will no longer need to make the trek up and down stairs all day! You will also have more free time and fewer maintenance costs with a smaller home. It may be hard to walk away from the home you children were raised in and all the memories you shared together, but a new home brings the chance to make new memories. W hen consider ing mov ing into a new home, another potential sign
that it may be to time to pack up your valuables and move them down the road is if the neighborhood you currently reside in starts to become less desirable. Like a home, a neighborhood can decline as well. Maybe the street you live on has had a string of recent break-ins. Maybe a local shopping center has just been built nearby and the traffic of cars and the noise of people have become unbearable at your current address. These could be good reasons to get out of your current neighborhood and find a new home that suits the lifestyle you deserve. One more good reason to consider a new home purchase is if you keep pumping money into things that need to be fixed, like a roof or a leaky basement. Older homes need more upkeep, and that could be less than exciting. So instead of fixing the roof or updating the siding on your home, it might be a good idea to start checking out other options on the market. You can probably find something that is move-in ready and was built more recently than your current home.

A ROAD TRIP TALE OF TRAVEL AND FRIENDSHIP BY A U D R E Y ASHE
e should sign our names on it,” I heard Toni declare as I chewed thoughtfully, reaching for the crackers, cheese, and fig spread. “Anybody have a sharpie?”
The sun had begun to set, casting pink and orange hues over Carhenge, and I couldn’t help but think “these really are the days of our lives” as I hopped off a half-buried truck to squeeze my initials between the thousands that came before mine. I’m talking about Carhenge in Alliance, Nebraska, a fun tourist trap slash art installation that offers a curious recreation of Stonehenge using broken down autos. Truth be told, I found it the perfect ending to my first long road trip with friends. Thankfully, our destination had not been Alliance, Nebraska. It was merely a pitstop on our way home from Colorado. As with many things in life, our adventure started on a whim. My stepfather had a week-long timeshare getaway available and I figured it wouldn’t hurt to look. A free place to stay and a summer trip, yes please! The place that ultimately caught my eye was Vail, Colorado. As a nature lover I’d always wanted to hike the Rockies, and it was a perfect time to go to Vail with the cool, dry weather. I called Toni and Craig, two friends with a penchant for adventure who love nothing more than good company and some laughs. The thing is, as a somewhat unorganized college grad navigating the week with two other less-organized people, our trip was to be a learning process rife with shenanigans. It didn’t take long to realize that driving my aging SUV—a vehicle with broken air conditioning—for three days through the American Midwest in summer wasn’t the most pleasant thing in the world. And with no auxiliary audio port, we had to get creative to stave off road hypnosis as the sea of cornstalks sent us into a trance. We got our mileage out of the same six CD mixes I made in high school, but to get a better feel of the Midwestern states we were passing through we eventually decided that whoever was riding shotgun would look up and read aloud local Craigslist personal ads. What will always stick with me is the surprising number of vampires in Iowa seeking companionship with those of their own kind. Vail, Colorado, which is packed during ski season, was all but a ghost town during our late summer visit. It wasn’t long before we started to feel like honorary locals. The girl at the coffee shop across the street was eager to hear of our daily escapades

a breath of
FRESH AIR and the bartenders at the pubs shared the history of the town and a few ghost stories. After a particularly long evening at such a pub, we decided to walk to the nearby grocery store to save money instead of going to a restaurant. Being rather unorganized as previously mentioned, we awoke the next morning to find we had purchased an array of food that didn’t quite match up. Bottles of dressing with no salad, a single onion, loaves of bread, and frozen pizzas— despite there being no oven in the condo. We soon discovered the joy of grilled pizza. Throughout my stay I soaked in Colorado’s many wonders. While we were not that far from civilization on the trails, it still felt as if the world had stopped and all that existed was the quiet beauty of nature. The hushed whispers of wind over the brush, the songs of birds and chattering of small animals, and most strikingly, the dense lushness of untampered land that seemed to breathe life itself enveloped me. Aspen trees huddled over us, the pattern of their bark like watchful eyes keeping us company on our long treks into their inner sanctum. The nearby hiking destination of Beaver Lake Trail will always be an important and personally memorable spot. We originally planned to hike up the trail to rest at what residents described as a peaceful lakeside oasis. Although we had to admit defeat after making it only halfway, the siren song of mental and physical triumph called, and in the spirit of adventure I rallied my friends to try again the next day. The second time around we persevered through the rocky final stretch and were rewarded with a view of Beaver Lake accompanied by friendly wildlife so used to hikers they walked right up to us to socialize. It’s possible that this trip was nothing more than some college graduates hitting the road, but the memories I ended up with will follow me for the rest of my life. It was a breath of fresh air and strengthened a bond I shared with close friends. We learned that not all adventures have to be grandiose and result in a fantastic destination. Sometimes merely getting away can help to bring you some peace at a certain point in your life. That’s what crossed my mind as I packed up the last of my Carhenge picnic from atop the rusted trunk and walked back to the car.

Beecoming a beekeeper BY MIMI GREENWOOD KNIGHT
WHEN I REACHED A CERTAIN AGE, I
remembered Ouiser Boudreaux from Steel Magnolias who said old southern women should “wear funny-looking hats and grow vegetables in the dirt.” I’ve never been able to pull off a hat, but I figured I might be able to coax a few vegetables from the ground. So, five years ago, I accepted my obligation as a southern lady, installed nine raised beds in my back yard, then made every mistake a novice gardener can make over the next five years. ¶ Season one, I sprayed a healthy crop with Dawn dishwashing liquid and water. The sun came out and scorched every leaf off every plant. Season two, I foraged cow pies from a neighbor’s pasture which had been sprayed with herbicide to discourage weeds only to discourage my vegetables from growing. Season three, I enticed my chickens to turn the beds for me all winter, then spent spring and summer unsuccessfully shooing them, as they happily uprooted everything I planted. I over-watered,
From bumbling gardener to buzzing queen of the back yard
over-fertilized, and over-crowded. At the end of the experiment, I’d scored a solid C- in gardening. ¶ Still, there was another southern lady adventure that intrigued me—beekeeping. What could be more timeless than charming a colony of bees into fertilizing your bountiful (someday) garden while proffering honey right in your own back yard? My research turned up too many benefits to list. ¶ There’s local honey to inoculate me against seasonal allergies, and beeswax for myriad DIY projects. Bees are independent, preferring to be left alone. I can do that. Honey bees are not aggressive and only sting if they’re provoked or to protect their hive. They’d get me out in the fresh air and I could do my part in saving the planet. The more I read, the more I was hooked on the idea. So, I got my hives, my suit, my bee tools, and finally my bees. That was a year ago, and I confess I’m still Nervous Nellie around my girls. My bee guru, Mr. Curtis, wears only jeans, a t-shirt, and tennis shoes

Are you taking that back to OUR hive? Are you having a good life here?” Some mornings, I sit beside the hives with my AM coffee, watching my girls come and go with their pollen-packed legs, and realize beekeepers have

been doing this for millennia. ¶ I recently had the joy of harvesting my honey and gifting it to friends. They looked at me with admiration—"my friend, the beekeeper!” Should I tell them I can’t grow a tomato to save my life? Would they realize the only thing I did right for my bees was leave them the heck alone? Nah, I’d rather let them savor their image of me as the consummate southern lady. Ouiser would be so proud.

CARPE LUX SEIZE THE
OUR UNIQUE FORM OF REAL LIFE TIME SHIF TING GIVES US A CHANCE TO CHANGE OUR ROUTINES BY BRANDON DAIKER
aydreaming about how I could best use the extra hour of daylight each day that will be afforded to me by this month’s onset of Daylight Saving Time—which we will first enjoy on Sunday the 10th—has occupied me for well over an hour this morning, an hour I could have spent utilizing the current amount of daylight in… a way that I haven’t quite thought of yet. In a world fixated on the fictional and theoretical possibilities granted by time travel, our cultural tinkering with the clocks is about the closest we can come to hitting pause on the DVR for our daily lives. Even though we’re really just jumping
forward and back during the wee hours of the morning twice per year, opinion is mixed, generally, as to which particular quantum leap people enjoy more (when it’s about time to “fall back” people seem thrilled to get the extra hour of sleep, yet when it’s time to “spring forward” the extra hour of sunlight is the raison d’être). Originally kicked off in 1918 (Happy 101st birthday Daylight Saving Time!) as a wartime conservation effort to preserve gas and electricity used on lighting, DST came about at a time when people didn’t have the self-illuminating technological gadgetry we do now, and extra daylight meant more time for visible entertainment outside instead of staying
DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME inside wasting energy. In 2019, what it really means is that the world of the outdoors is more available to us once we get done with work than it is during the colder months, when it can sometimes be dark as you leave the house and dark again by the time you’re home. Outdoor projector users, fans of patio lights, lovers of the early evening moonlight serenade, and stargazers lament! This time of year is not for you. In exchange, there’s more time to enjoy a family picnic, go for an evening swim, or do some of that yard work and outdoor maintenance you’ve been putting off for the last month or two. Despite losing the hour, an informal poll of the office reveals that more of us are excited about
the impending change than not. Some report not getting tired as easily in the evening owing to the extra light, having more time to go for a well-lit jog, being more inclined to swing by the store or run some errands after work, and generally feeling like it’s finally time to start getting into the spring and summer spirit after a long, dark winter. This all sounds fine. But if like me you started this article unsure of what exactly you’re going to start doing to make this newfound hour of extra sunlight count each day, fear not—it isn’t too late. By my estimation, you’ve got about 55 minutes left. march 2019

KIDCREATE STUDIO IN MANSFIELD Creativity, Giggles, Grins, Inspiration, Mess-Making, Discovery, Confidence, Exploration, Fun BY MEREDITH KNIGHT
“Every child is an artist.” Pablo Picasso 920 U.S. Highway 287, Suite 300 Mansfield, Texas 76063 (682) 400-8383 KidCreateStudio.com email@example.com
Vanessa Cancel always had a passion for helping people achieve their goals, although that passion took different forms throughout her life. “In college I worked admissions, financial aid, and orientation programs on campus,” she said. “Then I worked in the restaurant industry coaching and teaching employees, from servers or dishwashers to general managers. As a parent I loved challenging my kids and supporting them on their journey.” Now as owner/operator of Kidcreate Studio in Mansfield she scratches that itch every day empowering and challenging kids to create and explore their own imagination. “Part of what we teach them is the planning and implementing that goes into completing a project,” Vanessa said. “It’s teamwork and time management. It’s creativity and finding oneself within a masterpiece, and I’m able to do what I love in helping young people achieve their best self.” Opening her own Kidcreate Studio enabled Vanessa to realize that elusive work/life balance so many women pursue. Kidcreate is a unique art studio— just for kids. They specialize in children’s art classes, camps, and art-themed birthday parties, for kids age 18 months to 12 years. “We’re filling a need for young children who love to be creative, messy, and explore but don’t get as much time to do that in school or at home,” Vanessa said. They also travel to schools and churches that aren’t mobile and able to go out on fieldtrips. “We have birthdays where everyone
goes home with an awesome gift and camps that help the kids feel proud and accomplished at the end of each day with amazing projects to show for it,” Vanessa said. “All our teaching assistants are students at the Early College High School in Mansfield. They’re all very intelligent, great students and awesome with kids.” You can schedule your child’s birthday party at Kidcreate, sign them up for one-time or weekly classes or summer art camp, or even have the mobile studio come to you. You can book a private class for your moms group, playgroup, scout troop, or homeschool group. Classes are broken into age groups, so the activities your child enjoys are always tailored toward their age level. Visit KidCreateStudio. com to browse the different types of classes and camps. When not busy at the studio, Vanessa does what she can for her community, including volunteering with the Big Brothers Big Sisters, working with special needs students in and out of the studio, and donating to local schools and shelters.
