It’s going to be an exciting time in Mansfield in 2019. The momentum our city has seen over the last few years will continue. We can look forward to the completion of new infrastructure in Historic Downtown Mansfield that will transform Main Street into a pedestrian-friendly destination. The next phase of The Shops at Broad is expected to open in late 2019 bringing new retail and restaurants to our residents and to visitors. Just recently the developer announced that Belk, TJ Maxx, James Avery, 54th Street Bar & Grill, MOD Pizza, My Eye Lab and Starbucks will join the already-opened Academy Sports + Outdoors and At Home and already announced Flix Brewhouse. And there’s more to be announced. Stay tuned!
We continue to see people move into Mansfield as the southern portion of our city is transformed from open fields to neighborhoods with families making memories. The start of the New Year is a perfect to reminisce and to look forward. Mansfield has such a rich history. It’s exciting to see the bright future that is ahead of us. Happy New Year!

THE FUTURE OF SURGERY IS NOW. 12
eet a team of visionaries that have consistently pioneered the latest in robotic and other next-generation surgeries. Now they’re bringing minimally-invasive surgery to a whole new level for thousands of patients throughout Mansfield, Arlington, Grand Prairie, Midlothian, Cedar Hill, Fort Worth, and surrounding communities.
Drs. Gary Alexander, MD, FACS, CPE, Jeremy Parcells, MD, FACS, Joshua Trussell, MD, FACS, CPE and Andrew Standerwick, MD, FACS have consistently led the way with the latest, least-invasive surgical procedures which offer their patients better outcomes, shorter recovery times, less scarring, less risk of infection, and much less trauma to areas surrounding the surgery site. In their ongoing commitment to advance the art and science of surgery, they’re bringing even more innovative procedures to Mansfield. TRAUMA AND EMERGENCY CARE When a patient requires emergency surgery, it’s imperative they receive the care and attention they need as quickly as possible by someone qualified to provide it. Because the unexpected can happen this team has brought a designated Level 3 trauma center closer to home in Mansfield. They believe that prompt, expert care is vital to getting you back to regular life. Additionally, because they under-

Gastric Balloon Weight Loss System
A more delicate approach to procedures
Less movement and handling of body tissues
Smaller incisions and less pain and blood loss
Significantly decreased complications and scarring
Shorter recovery periods and hospital stays
Better clinical outcomes
Millions of Americans suffer from reflux disease. Also, known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), it can often be treated with over-the-counter medications and lifestyle changes. But surgery is sometimes the best option for permanent relief. Surgical Associates has helped hundreds of patients suffering with GERD, heartburn, or any other type of reflux condition with minimally-invasive surgical procedures including:
With Drs. Gary Alexander, Jeremy Parcells, Joshua Trussell, and Andrew Standerwick’s commitment to the future of minimally-invasive surgical, they will continue to innovate, bringing the latest, least-invasive, most up-to-date care to their friends and neighbors in Mansfield and the surrounding communities.
Millions of adults suffer from one type of hernia or another. But far from being minor issues, big hernias can spell big trouble. This surgical team is at the forefront of abdominal wall reconstruction and minimally-invasive da Vinci Robotic surgery for hernias. The robot-assisted surgery allows them to repair hernias through a series of tiny incisions, rather than a large open incision. While the surgeon remains in control, the technology provides a 3D HD view inside the body, enhancing vision, precision, and control and improving surgical outcomes. For their patient, this has meant greatly reduced downtime—from the traditional 7 to 20 days to an astounding two to three days—with infection rates of close to zero. BARIATRICS WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY Obesity is the number one health concern in the US today impacting self-esteem, relationships, quality of life, and increases the risk of obesity-related illnesses. One solution is bariatric surgery which assists in weight loss by restricting the amount of food the stomach can hold, resulting in less absorption of calories. When local healthcare facilities were searching for highly-qualified surgeons to perform bariatric procedures in Tarrant County, they approached this innovating team. Since that time, they’ve performed hundreds of successful bariatric surgeries including:
In order to determine if you’re a candidate for bariatric surgery, they will conduct a thorough evaluation to better the chances of a successful outcome and ensure you’re mentally, emotionally, and physically prepared for life after surgery. Their multidisciplinary approach includes this surgical evaluation, as well as medical, psychological, and nutritional evaluation and follow-up after surgery.

ERICA SAILS, MD ABOUT DR. SAILS: • Medical Degree from University of Illinois at Chicago • Residency through Hinsdale Family Medicine Residency Program • Board Certified, American Board of Family Medicine • Now Accepting New Patients Dr. Erica Sails of Sails Family Medicine believes in the basics. “Proper rest, diet, exercise, fresh air, water, self-control, sunshine, and trusting God are all essential to staying healthy and becoming the best we can be,” she said. At her family medicine practice, Dr. Sails spends her days educating, motivating, and empowering her patients to achieve optimal health. “I enjoy partnering with my patients to set smart goals to help prevent—and in some cases reverse—the progress of lifestyle disease.” It’s what God has called her to do and what He solidified in her, while she undertook urban missionary work in inner-city Chicago. “My time in Chicago, combined with my faith in God, truly changed my life,” she said. “It gave me a unique perspective on medicine and myself—both as a physician and a servant to man—working as an extension of the healing hands of Christ.” Dr. Sails sees each patient as a life God has allowed her to impact. “I’ve learned the importance of listening, especially to unspoken words and body language; to recognize the real needs that are often more than just physical. Listening helps me be more compassionate and effective—both in the mission field and in medicine.” Her holistic approach to health—addressing the physical needs by understanding the mental, social, and spiritual needs of each patient—sets her apart. Dr. Sails shared with us an example of this approach in action. In her practice she had a patient who was neglecting her diabetes and hypertension medicine. Once she gained her trust, Dr. Sails discovered the patient feared for her life, at the hands of a drug-addicted daughter who—among other things—was selling her medicine, to fund her drug habit. Dr. Sails helped the patient get out of this dangerous situation, find a
place to stay, and obtain the social services she needed. Once the patient was in a place where she could manage her medicine and money, and feel safe, Dr. Sails and the patient could partner to address her diabetes and hypertension and her health improved tremendously. This is just one of many patients who has received another chance at a healthy life thanks to a doctor willing to meet them where they were and extend the grace of God. Dr. Sails is an active member of Arlington Seventh Day Adventist church where she’s involved in outreach, leads life groups, and is the former health ministry’s leader. She and her family also support Revive Community Service.

DYSFUNCTION (OR HOLY CRAP) ONE WOMAN’S REDEMPTION STORY BY LI SA JE NK I NS- M OORE
When I first met Judy Kennedy, I would have never guessed the confident, attractive, articulate woman was a true trophy of God’s grace. I had the privilege of hearing her testimony a few weeks later—from a traumatic childhood to tumultuous teen years, God rescued her and anointed her for full time ministry. As she often states, “What the enemy meant for my harm, God used for my good.” Now, Judy is releasing her life story in a book entitled, Holy Crap. Here’s a preview of her story: Having been raised in a home with six children and a severely alcoholic father, I experienced extreme dysfunction in a family. Many nights we feared his arrival, and often my mom would sneak my siblings and me out a back window and take us to a run-down motel for the night. That life experience has given me the ability to work with and minister to children of alcoholics and victims of domestic violence. At the age of 14 I was raped, abused, and tormented by a young man who was my “first date.” His abuse continued for more than six months. Shortly thereafter, I was connected with a “counselor” in a church who was supposed to help me through that traumatic experience. Instead he began to groom me to have a relationship with him. Though he was married, he controlled every aspect of my life—sexually, mentally, and physically and abused me both inside and outside of the church. This went on for over five years until in desperation, I went to the pastor [my pastor] for help. Rather than help, the pastor admitted that he knew all along what had been transpiring and offered no sympathy or reprimand to the offender. While these life experiences were devastating, God
has used them to open doors to help others. I speak at schools and conferences, teaching young women to respect themselves and to recognize abusive boys/men and avoid risky behavior. I speak into the lives of pastors and staff members regarding safe guarding their churches against child predators. A few years later I met and married the love of my life and we had our first child, Zac. He passed away at only 14 months with a heart condition. God walked me through that very challenging season of grief and inspired me to write a small book to help young mothers who experience the loss of a child. Now, Zac’s story is placed in “Angel Packets” to go home with mothers at Children’s Hospital when they have to deal with death. The enemy’s plan was to take me out. God’s plan is to use my life to minister to broken people. The pain I’ve experienced has awakened a determination to spend the rest of my life making my enemy regret he ever messed with me! Judy is the co-pastor of Mustang Creek Community Church in Forney, Texas. She and her husband, Robert, and their grown daughters, Stacy and Kaylee, minister full time in the church, in their community, and beyond. The sincere devotion they have to follow Christ and live Biblical values in not only inspiring, but it is making a difference. Judy is a trophy of God’s grace, and with her husband, has produced a righteous legacy. God’s redeeming love and restorative abilities never cease to amaze me. To connect with Judy Kennedy, email her at Judy@mustangcreek.org. Look for her new book, Holy Crap, on-line at Trilogy. tv and also at Amazon.com.

Today! Not tomorrow (or the day after that, or the day after that) By Mimi Greenwood Knight
“ONLY PUT OFF UNTIL TOMORROW WHAT YOU ARE WILLING TO DIE HAVING LEFT UNDONE.” - PABLO PICASSO
WHY WE PROCRASTINATE According to a Harvard Business Review article, the tasks on which we procrastinate tend to fall into a few usual categories. • Boring • Frustrating • Difficult • Ambiguous • Unstructured • Not intrinsically rewarding • Lacking in personal meaning
How ironic is it that I’ve been putting off writing this article on procrastination? Okay, not really (editor’s note: good) but I am writing it now to avoid writing something more pressing, making me the quintessential procrastinator. While many people associate procrastination with laziness, there’s a distinct difference. Procrastination is choosing to do something else instead of the task you know you should be doing. For instance, I wouldn’t dream of plowing through a season of TV on a work day, but I sure will clean my house, get caught up on laundry, and cook dinner at 10:00 AM to postpone doing the things I should be doing. And while those are all positive things, avoiding tasks we should prioritize can make us feel guilty, ashamed, demotivated, and disillusioned. Ultimately, it can make us less productive—jeopardizing our long-term goals.
PROCRASTINATION AND YOUR HEALTH
With that in mind, here are a few tactics that help me procrastinate less. •
Experts agree that procrastination can negatively affect your health.
First, forgive yourself for past procrastination. Studies show that self-forgiveness helps you feel more positive about yourself, which reduces the likelihood of procrastinating in the future. Begin with the task you least want to do. Get it out of the way as early as possible. Then you can spend the rest of the day concentrating on work you find more enjoyable while feeling the satisfaction of having the bad one out of the way. If you work on deadline, like I do, let those assigning your work know that you are in fact a deadbeat who should ALWAYS be given a deadline (even if they just make one up). Begin with the end in mind. Few things make me feel better than getting to the end of the day knowing I’ve accomplished what I set out to do. Try to remember how that feels and work toward that feeling.

Promise yourself a reward for completing a difficult task on time. A decadent dessert, a visit to your favorite coffee house, and even a little retail therapy can work as a carrot on a stick to get or keep you motivated.
Ask someone to hold you accountable. When my workload is heavy, I tell my 16-year-old son how much I plan to write while he’s at school. The little taskmaster takes his responsibility seriously too, asking for proof of what I’ve written each evening. Online tools such as Procraster can also help.
Minimize distractions. Social media is a major productivity killer. So is television and even the radio. Make your work space a distraction-free zone.

LITTLE KNOWN FACTS Leonardo da Vinci was a perfectionist and a procrastinator, so while his legacy includes hundreds of drawings and sketches, he only left behind thirty paintings—many of them unfinished.
This might be a good time to mention that some of the greatest artists, writers, composers, and political leaders in history have been hopeless procrastinators. So, there’s something to be said for being a slacker—at least some of the time. january 2019

360 Family and Implant Dentistry is a progressive general dental office offering a variety of dental services including dental implants and a full menu of cosmetic dentistry options. In their mission to provide the Grand Prairie community with comprehensive dentistry, they tailor care to each individual patient, focusing on learning their needs and earning their trust by providing consistent treatment options and fees. MEET DR. GONZALES
Dr. Christopher Gonzales is a student of life—and of his chosen field of dentistry. Passionate about discovering the latest opportunities and evolving dental materials, he chose to further his studies with a focus on prosthodontics, the dental specialty primarily concerned with the restoration and replacement of lost or damaged teeth. Sometimes called the “architects of the smile,” prosthodontists train in all the elements of a beautiful, functional, and natural-looking smile—not just teeth, but gums, lips, and facial features. “When someone seeks my help, I want to know I’m doing all I can, personally and professionally; using all my available faculties to help them,” he said. “My work in the prosthodontic field allows me to look for new and better technologies for my patients that are less invasive and more convenient. I’ve enjoyed learning how to create the dental restorations I deliver.” MEET DR. NGUYEN
Ticole is one of those rare people who settled on her career path early in life. “When I was in 10th grade, I knew I wanted to pursue dentistry,” she
said. “I participated in summer dental programs at Baylor Dental School. After I graduated, I worked at a corporate dental office for a while and was blessed to work with an amazing and wonderful senior dentist who became my mentor and encouraged me to open my own office. Dr. Nguyen understands not everyone has a positive opinion of going to the dentist. But she’s all about changing that. “I didn’t have very good dental experiences growing up, so I went into dentistry to make things different for my patients,” she said. “Fear of the dentist and the dental office is a very real thing. I’ve had many fillings and crowns, so I’m empathetic with my patients. I understand that, and I’m dedicated to changing it.” Drs. Gonzales and Nguyen are now accepting new patients.
“MY WORK IN THE PROSTHODONTIC FIELD ALLOWS ME TO LOOK FOR NEW AND BETTER TECHNOLOGIES FOR MY PATIENTS THAT ARE LESS INVASIVE AND MORE CONVENIENT. I’VE ENJOYED LEARNING HOW TO CREATE THE DENTAL RESTORATIONS I DELIVER.” “FEAR OF THE DENTIST AND THE DENTAL OFFICE IS A VERY REAL THING. I’VE HAD MANY FILLINGS AND CROWNS, SO I’M EMPATHETIC WITH MY PATIENTS. I UNDERSTAND THAT, AND I’M DEDICATED TO CHANGING IT.”

TAKE A FRESH LOOK, A LITTLE BIT AT A TIME By Lisa Jenkins-Moore
f you are like many, you rang in the New Year with renewed hope and aspiration to “do better than last year.” Perhaps food and fitness were on your list, or more family time. Maybe you wanted to watch less Netflix and read more books. You might have even had more serious goals like curbing an addiction. Regardless of the content, you may have aimed too high, missed right away, and trashed your goals completely!
you are not alone in your desire for change! 26
Alas, all is not lost. You are not alone in your desire for change, but most of us do not achieve the goals we set because we take the wrong approach. We’ve been taught to make resolutions and walk them out day by day for three weeks until they become a habitual part of our lives. Scientific research reveals, however, that the 21-day approach to forming a habit is a myth. It takes our brains much, much longer to create neural pathways that result in habitual behavior—that is, behavior that doesn’t require any forethought or effort, but is like second nature. Apparently, we do ourselves a disservice by setting lofty goals. Failure is inevitable because instead of triggering the “reward hormone” when we complete a task, we trigger feelings of guilt and self-loathing if we don’t execute accurately in the self-allotted time. So what’s the solution? Happy you asked! I stumbled upon a great book a few months that boasted
discover the joy of accomplishment! promising results. Mini Habits by Stephen Guise explains how our minds operate and why traditional goal setting techniques are flawed. He changed the entire course of his life by committing to just one push up per day. You see, life is busy. Daily demands often overshadow our desire to change for the better. Setting a goal to work out for 30 minutes a day and never actually doing it is detrimental to our self-esteem and actually hurts our will power. Setting the goal lower— like a few jumping jacks or running in place for five minutes—makes it doable, even on the most hectic of days. It sounds simple, but the effects can be profound. The changes that transpire in our brain can be highly beneficial and even life changing. Consider all the “bad habits” people have. Nobody woke up one day and said, “I think I’ll spend eight hours on my phone every day” or “I’ll become an alcoholic” or “I’ll collect things I don’t need.” No, every one of our addictions started with a single act. Likewise, good habits are developed slowly over time. They are best started by declaring small, achievable goals, those you can accomplish on even your craziest days. So, take a minute and rewind your resolutions. Shave them down a bit and discover the joy of accomplishment! Before you know it, the year will conclude and you’ll be so used to your habit you might just have forgotten it started in the smallest of ways.

Confirm that the dermatologist is focused on treating you rather than excessively promoting products or services that will not directly help your condition. The doctor should view you as a patient, not a consumer. You can also verify that appointments will never feel rushed. Your dermatologist should provide time to explain everything fully, including tests and treatments.
DERMATOLOGISTS DIAGNOSE AND TREAT OVER 3,000 CONDITIONS AND DISEASES OF THE SKIN, hair, nails, and mucous membranes.
A few of the health issues that can be improved with dermatologic care include acne, eczema, psoriasis, hair loss, rosacea, varicose veins, and signs of aging. There is also a key preventive role of these doctors through annual skin checks. Using professional strategies and equipment, dermatologists can find issues with the skin that may not be immediately apparent. The early detection and treatment of melanoma results in cure in a vast majority of cases.
“Choosing the right dermatology team is so imperative. A good dermatologist will look you over from head to toe, scanning your skin for potential cancers. Early detection is essential. For cosmetic procedures, it is very important to find a dermatologist who listens and understands your goals. Choose a team with experience and the expertise to carry out the procedures in a safe manner with exceptional outcomes.” DR. JEANNINE HOANG
UNITED DERMATOLOGY ASSOCIATES
While it is generally important to see a dermatologist, it is also critical to find one who is credible and can best meet your needs. Several considerations can help in your selection process. First, verify that the dermatologist is board certified. Board certification will ensure you that the doctor has completed a medical degree, an internship, and a residency approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. You also know that they have passed an exam by the American Osteopathic Board of Dermatology or American Board of Dermatology. Ask your general practitioner for a dermatologist referral. You can also get recommendations from other doctors or from loved ones. Call each doctor and set up an initial consultation, in which you can ask the doctor additional questions.
Ask the doctor about their experience treating your particular condition. If a dermatologist has subspecialty training in nail and hair disorders, or in skin cancer surgery, that tells you they have invaluable knowledge related to your diagnosis. Ask what their experience is with your disease. If you think you will require a type of treatment, ask how many times the dermatologist has provided that treatment. Check about modes of contact outside business hours. If you receive a treatment and start to have an adverse response, you will want to be able to reach the doctor right away. Rather than finding out that the person you chose to trust with your skin is unavailable after-hours, ask about evening and weekend contact upfront. Make sure you can connect. While criteria for professional relationships differs from personal ones, you still want to feel that you can communicate. As you ask the dermatologist questions in your initial appointment, be sure that they are answering you in plain language and are focused on your comfort. It is critical to visit a dermatologist if you have symptoms involving your skin, nails, mucous membranes, and hair. Routine skin checks are also vital so that you can act on melanoma immediately if it appears. By following the steps above to assess potential doctors, you can be sure you choose someone who is credible, has niche skills for your situation, and will treat your care as the first priority.

cutting-edge digital programmable hearing aids. These new generation devices are not only powerful, but so tiny they are barely perceptible. And they come with enhanced features such as the ability to pair them with your cell phone. The more hearing aid options an audiologist offers increases their ability to customize the technology to your needs and lifestyle.
In addition to routine diagnostic and hearing evaluations, today’s full-service audiologists provide comprehensive hearing healthcare. This typically includes hearing aid fittings, programming, and repairs, and services such as live speech mapping, tinnitus treatment options, cerumen removal, and more. Since you will likely see your audiologist on a regular basis, look for one with an office that is conveniently located from where you live or work.
When researching audiologists, remember their credentials can help you know you will be seen by a professional with extensive training who has demonstrated a commitment to maintaining the highest levels of professional competency. Someone who is board certified by the American Board of Audiology (ABA) has completed graduate study in audiology from a regionally accredited university, has earned a doctoral degree in audiology (AuD), has completed a minimum of 2,000 hours of mentored professional practice, and must engage in 60 hours of continuous learning to recertify every three years. Other credentials may include CCC-A, which signifies the audiologist holds a certificate of clinical competency in audiology, issued by the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA). Professionals awarded the CCC-A have completed a rigorous academic program and a supervised clinical experience and have passed a national examination. F-AAA delineates audiologists who are Fellows of the American Academy of Audiology.
Location is important, but finding an audiologist who meets your individual needs and is up-to-date on the latest innovations can be worth a drive. Amazing technological advancements have been made over the last few years in the field of audiology. With this in mind, it is paramount that you find an audiologist who is up-to-date on the latest advances in diagnostics and treatment options, including
Lastly, finding an audiologist with whom you feel comfortable and who educates you is an advantage. Success with hearing instruments depends on the relationship you have with your audiologist as much as it does the actual hearing device itself. Better hearing and easier communication are a journey. You want an audiologist who will work with you in partnership every step of the way.

some degree of hearing loss, according to the Hearing Loss Association of America. If you’re one of them, it can profoundly affect your ability to communicate and relate to others. Left untreated, it may lead to a host of problems, including feelings of isolation, negativism, stress, depression, and memory loss. It’s important to have your hearing checked regularly, even if you think your hearing is fine. And if you suspect a loved one suffers from hearing loss, urge him or her to see an audiologist for evaluation.
“Listening and interacting with untreated hearing loss requires a lot of effort. Trying to focus and remember details while keeping up with conversation that is muffled is exhausting, which makes everyday interaction difficult. Hearing loss can be managed, and the first step is a hearing evaluation with an audiologist. There is no good reason to delay.” DR. LISA B. FELL

A COSMETIC DENTIST
Depending on your needs and level of worry related to seeing the dentist, it can be a good idea to check what patient comforts the practice has. Options may include sedation, spa services, easy chairs, and headphones with serene music. Get before-and-after photographs of past patients who have received the same type of treatment from the dentist. Be sure that the results are impressive. Confirm that the pictures are of actual patients treated by the clinic. FAMILY, GENERAL, AND RESTORATIVE DENTISTS PROVIDE TREATMENT THAT IS NECESSARY FOR ORAL HEALTH , while the work performed
by cosmetic dentists is elective. Cosmetic dentists improve the appearance of your smile. This field of dentistry offers a range of strategies to boost your aesthetics. Cosmetic dentists can reshape teeth that have been worn down or are otherwise abnormal. They can straighten teeth that are crooked and restore ones that are damaged. They can replace teeth that are missing with dentures, bridges, crowns, and implants. Whitening is also a common practice. Visiting a cosmetic dentist can improve your appearance and serve as a great confidence booster.
“If you’ve been considering a smile makeover, be prepared to do a little homework before you find a cosmetic dentist. Cosmetic dentistry is like fine art. It requires time and skill. Take time to clearly explain your goals and listen to the dentist’s recommendations. If the dentist and staff make you feel comfortable and well cared for, you’re sure to have a great experience!” DR. SANDI HAMM
COSMETIC AND COMPREHENSIVE DENTISTRY
Before you get down to business, you have to determine the specific professional who will treat you. By being methodical and careful, you can validate credibility and make an informed choice. Check on the track record and qualifications of the dentist. You could get that information through their website or over the phone. You want to know how long the practice has been open. You also want to know that the dentist has training in cosmetic dentistry as a specialty. One prominent way dentists can indicate this training is through American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) accreditation. Verify that the practice has strong technologies to perform procedures, such as intraoral imaging, CAD/CAM restoration, caries detection devices, and lasers.
Get referrals. One simple way to connect with a strong cosmetic dentist is through referral from your current dentist. Your general dentist will be aware of your mouth health. Your primary dentist is not just helpful for a referral but could also advise you to see other specialists (such as orthodontists, endodontists, prosthodontists, periodontists, or oral maxillofacial surgeons) before you get cosmetic care. The dentist can also recommend a professional he or she trusts. However, if you want to go beyond your dentist for advice, you can ask coworkers, neighbors, or friends for any cosmetic dentist that they endorse. It is also possible that your dentist will let you know that their office performs the cosmetic treatment you want. Even if that is the case, you can also consult with a dentist focused exclusively on cosmetic care before you move forward. Do your own searching. You can look through databases run by local, state, or national organizations. The American Dental Association has a database organized by specialty. You can also check the record of your potential dentist with the state licensing body, the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE), which has key licensee information available online. There are many reasons that people visit cosmetic dentists. With the above information, you can conduct a thoughtful selection process that guides you toward someone you can trust with your smile.

DO YOU RESIST SMILING EVEN WHEN YOU’RE HAPPY, or cover your mouth when you laugh because you’re self-conscious about your teeth? You’re not alone. In fact, The American Board of Orthodontists reports that one in five orthodontic patients in the U.S. today are adults. And a showstopping smile is only part of the reason. Because overcrowded or misaligned teeth are harder to keep clean, having your teeth properly aligned by an orthodontist can help head off potentially life-threatening health conditions caused by bacteria entering the body from tooth decay and gum disease. It can also stave off TMJ and help your mouth, teeth, and jaw function properly.
The process of choosing an orthodontist is a vitally important process, as the individual you choose will be involved in the care of an essential area of your body—your mouth, jaw, and teeth—for an extended period. A good place to begin your search is by asking your general dentist or primary care physician for recommendations. You can also visit The American Board of Orthodontists’ website at AmericanBoardOrtho.com for a list of board-certified orthodontists in your area.

Once you’ve collected a few recommendations, take the time to interview potential orthodontists. Find out how many orthodontists work in the office. Would you see the same one each time? Undergo an initial exam and ask for their recommendations. Ask about the process. How long will the entire treatment take? How often will you need to visit the office and how long will each office visit last? Why are they recommending the treatment plan they’re recommending? Do they have 3D software to show you your end result before treatment is begun? Because you’ll be required to make multiple visits to the office, location is important, as are the traffic patterns and location of the office. You want an office that’s close to home or work, with easy access, so you can be in and out in a reasonable time. Find out how long an average wait time will be. Ask the orthodontist how long they’ve been practicing and how many other adults they’re treating. Now it’s time to talk money. Get a price on your treatment and be clear about what it covers. Will there be additional fees during the treatment? What follow-up care, such as retainers, will be required after the braces, and what are the expected cost of those? What insurance plans do they accept? You can even ask for referrals and call a few current patients. By properly vetting the orthodontist and paying close attention to the overall vibe of the office, friendliness and knowledge of the staff, and the doctor’s track record, you can find the right orthodontist and the right office to start you on your road to a beautiful and fully-functioning smile.

surgeon receives comprehensive training in procedures of the face, breast rejuvenation, and body contouring, plus non-surgical aesthetics.
MOST OF US HAVE SOMETHING ABOUT OUR PHYSICAL APPEARANCE WE’D CHANGE if we could. With the latest advancements in
cosmetic surgery, now is the time to do just that -- making subtle and natural-looking changes. Whether you desire complete body transformation with a mommy makeover or dream of facial rejuvenation, cosmetic surgery can be a positive, life-changing experience that boosts selfconfidence and may even advance your career. Choosing the right cosmetic surgeon is the key, so educate yourself on all available treatment options, and then select a cosmetic surgeon that’s right for you. You’ll be glad you did.
“Board certification from the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery demonstrates the highest standard in cosmetic surgery training, knowledge, and expertise. I love cosmetic surgery…and it shows.” MICHAEL L. THORNTON, DO, FACOS
First and foremost, schedule a consultation with a qualified, experienced, and “Board Certified” cosmetic surgeon. Being “Board Certified” means the surgeon has completed an approved surgical residency or cosmetic surgery fellowship-training program and passed rigorous written and oral examinations that test the surgeon’s knowledge, skill, and surgical competency necessary to provide safe patient care in cosmetic plastic surgery. Looking for someone specifically board certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS) provides assurance they’re accurately trained and experienced, focusing their practice strictly on cosmetic surgery. Diplomates of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery must complete an advanced 12-month fellowship exclusively in cosmetic surgery, where the
In addition, when interviewing potential cosmetic surgeons ask them: How did you train for this procedure? Did you have successful and reproducible results? How many surgeries have you performed? Furthermore, make sure you receive straightforward answers to your questions, as you should feel at ease and comfortable. Remember, you are going to be spending quite a bit of time with your cosmetic surgeon, so make sure you have a positive and encouraging connection. Now, look carefully at the before and after photos of previous patients. Be sure the photos represent actual clients versus stock photos used for marketing purposes. Additionally, pay close attention to patients who have similar qualities as you. Look for someone with a similar figure or facial structure, age, and body frame. Next, ask your cosmetic surgeon where they perform surgery and whether it is an “accredited” facility. This could be at a hospital, an outpatient surgery center, or a private office. For a facility to receive accreditation, it must adhere to strict standards in personnel, sanitation, emergency equipment, patient care, anesthesia, and inspections. Therefore, look for symbols of national accreditation including, AAAASF, AAAHC, or JCAHO, as a competent cosmetic surgeon will proudly discuss their accreditation as a symbol of excellence and patient safety. Lastly, you want to be sure you are being well treated by the office staff. Was the staff friendly and helpful during your visit? Did you receive supportive materials and office pamphlets during your consultation? Were the fees clearly stated on the quote in a non-confusing manner? Remember, you will be living with the results of your surgery for years. So, take time finding the cosmetic surgeon and staff that’s right for you.

AT SOME TIME IN OUR LIVES, MOST OF US WILL REQUIRE THE SERVICES OF AN ATTORNEY . When you do, it’s important to comparison
shop, just as you would for any other professional. Your state, country, and town should offer a wide range of lawyers to choose from. Selecting the right one can make the difference between a pleasant experience with a satisfying outcome and an exasperating experience you’ll be second-guessing for years to come. Vetting and locating an experienced and qualified lawyer who specializes in the type of law you need can be the beginning of a mutuallybeneficial professional relationship.
As with any other business, good wordof-mouth is the best advertising money CAN’T buy. Ask your family, friends, and anyone whose judgement you value for names of lawyer, who’ve done well—or poorly—for them. Because lawyers are often highly specialized, to try get recommendations from people who’ve hired an attorney for similar reasons. Peruse the internet. There are a variety of websites that offer listings of attorneys by state and/or specialty. Make sure lawyers you’re considering regularly practice the type of law you need. If you need a criminal defense lawyer, for instance, you don’t want someone who mainly has experience in something like estate law, even if they’re an old family friend. But because many lawyers at least know of each other, that family friend is a great person to ask about anyone else you may be considering.
Once you have a short list of potential attorneys, meet with a few. Don’t be shy when it comes to asking about fees. There are generally two types of billing for legal services: hourly or percentage. If you’re hiring a lawyer to handle routine legal work (like completing a house sale or putting an estate through probate), expect to pay hourly. You should also expect to pay hourly for a criminal defense lawyer. If you’re suing someone, you can often arrange contingency legal fees, which means your lawyer will take some percentage of any settlement you receive. If you’re paying hourly, expect to pay some portion of your expected fee up front as a retainer. Ask for an itemized statement detailing the things you can expect a lawyer to do and negotiate an appropriate retainer accordingly. While you’re at the office, ask to meet any paralegals, legal assistants, or other non-lawyers who’ll be working on your case. These fine folks handle much of the grunt work and legwork involved in any case—and using them can save you money. When you’re setting up your schedule with a potential lawyer, ask what work the firm’s paralegals and legal assistants will be completing and how these savings will be passed along to you in your bill. Lastly, before hiring any lawyer, contact the law disciplinary agency in your state to confirm that the lawyer is in good standing as a member of the bar. If there is disciplinary action being taken against him or her, offer them a chance to explain. Take your time to select a lawyer with the experience, legal skills, and personal qualities that will best serve your needs, now and in the future.

DID YOU KNOW THAT A CHILD’S FIRST TRIP TO THE DENTIST SHOULD BE SCHEDULED WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR? The general guideline is
that a child be seen at the appearance of the first tooth, shortly thereafter, or at a minimum by the first birthday. In most cases, the first appointment with a pediatric dentist is preventative. Parents need to understand the importance of proper oral hygiene for their little one and learn the best ways to teach their child the importance of brushing and flossing. Additionally, a pediatric dentist can offer recommendations on foods and drinks as well as daily maintenance to give your child the best start.
“A pediatric dentist is a specialist dedicated to the oral health of children. They are trained in dealing with behavior through different approaches, from early
You should first gather some recommendations from friends and family, and talk to your child’s pediatrician. Research local pediatric dentists online, and make sure you find dentists that have proper training and certification. Many dental practices offer family care, and may take infants and children as well. Some families opt for a dentist who can handle the entire family in order to make appointments more convenient, though this depends on your unique situation.

According to Colgate, “All kids should visit a dentist by their first birthday. Finding a good pediatric dentist may mean the difference between a pleasant, successful first experience and an experience that may not be that great. It is important to find a dentist that takes good care of your child’s teeth while making the visit enjoyable.”
Another important consideration in choosing a pediatric dentist is the atmosphere. Unfortunately, some children are anxious about a dentist visit. Toys, video games, and movies can help ease their anxiety or at least provide a distraction to lessen the uncertainty. Some offices have animal or movie themed rooms, headsets and overhead movies, kid friendly music, and other ways to curb the nerves. Decide what your child will most enjoy and put that on your list of must haves when selecting your dentist. Of course, bedside manner is extremely important, especially to a child. While pediatric dentists are trained specifically to meet a child’s needs, personalities will differ, so make sure the one you choose will be one that connects with your child. Some practices have integrated procedures to assist children with disabilities and those with special needs. If your child needs additional care, make sure the dentist you are reviewing understands that and find out how he handles each patient. Read online reviews from several sources and take time with your decision. If insurance comes into play, find out who and what is covered. A trip to the dentist can be a pleasant experience, and one of the advantages of starting your child early is to get him or her accustomed to the office, the environment, the dentist, the equipment, and the procedures—many of which they’ll encounter later in life as well. The more exposure your child has in the beginning, the easier subsequent visits will be. Give your child a healthy start and schedule a visit before their first birthday.

THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO SUFFER FROM CHRONIC PAIN The
number of people who suffer from chronic pain in Texas and throughout the United States is incredible—100 million nationwide. That means 1 in 3 Americans currently have this condition. Unfortunately, pain often goes untreated. Neglecting to relieve it can poorly impact the immune system. If the pain results from tissue damage, it will heal more slowly if the pain is not mitigated. Pain that is unaddressed can also make it more difficult for us to cope with stress, chemotherapy, and surgery. As with any healthcare field, the quality of care you receive will differ from one pain management provider to the next. However, knowing how to evaluate clinics will lead you to a team you can trust.
“Your pain doctor should take time to hear your story, evaluate you completely, review with you all the available imaging, and explain your diagnosis and the plan in words that you understand. They should work with you to develop a multi-disciplinary treatment plan that is customized to you, to achieve your individual goal.” DR. JASON BUTLER
ARLINGTON PAIN & THERAPY
Your doctor should be board-certified and have received specialized training in pain management. Check if the clinic’s doctors are members of organizations such as the Texas Pain Society, American Academy of Pain Medicine, or Society for Pain Practice Management.
If a clinic runs a pain support group, that is a good sign. These groups can be helpful for referrals, but also for emotional support, since that part of pain is so significant. In fact, pain experts believe so strongly about the emotional aspect that the definition of pain from the International Association for the Study of Pain calls it “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience.” Find out about the therapies that are offered through the clinic, which may be diverse, given that today’s standard approach to pain management is multidisciplinary—combining various medical, conventional, and alternative specialties into the approach. Clinics that are primarily focused on narcotic pain relief should receive extra attention, since these medications have many side-effects and can lead to addiction. Pharmaceutical drugs can also have negative interactions with other medications you may already be taking. If your doctor does prescribe medication, it should be in combination with physical therapy, rehabilitation, massage therapy, chiropractic, mental healthcare, and/or other modalities.
Another straightforward way to find a high-quality clinic is by getting a referral from your general physician or specialist. You may also be able to get a strong recommendation from a hospital or general health clinic in your area. A pain support group could provide a referral as well, as could friends or family.
The selection of a chronic pain clinic continues through the initial appointment. You should feel comfortable with the doctor. They should not be focused on the pain but on you. Understand the treatment plan. The doctors should be able to customize a plan that is directed toward meeting your objectives. They should communicate with you throughout the process and track your recovery closely.
Check online reviews. Ask the clinic if you can speak with current or past patients about the care they received at the clinic. Some clinics are niche-focused on specific types of pain. Be sure your doctor has expertise with your specific condition.
Chronic pain is a common health issue, and addressing it is critical to immediate and long-term health. Selecting the right pain management center is challenging, but step-by-step assessment upfront can lead you to a healthcare relationship you can trust.

A PLASTIC SURGEON
BY L A C E Y K U P F E R W U L F
IF YOU’RE SELF-CONSCIOUS ABOUT PART OF YOUR APPEARANCE, If
childbirth or breastfeeding have left your body feeling a little less youthful, or if you’re just looking for something akin to body contouring or liposuction to deal with stubborn fat that can’t be taken care of with other options, your best course of action may be to seek out a qualified plastic surgeon. Finding the right one might take a little bit of research, but it will serve as the most important step in a process that ideally leaves you feeling more comfortable and confident in your own skin.
Make sure the plastic surgeon you choose is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This is truly a “must do” item on your to-do list for your safety. To become board certified, a doctor must complete three to five years of training in general surgery and a minimum of two to three years of training in plastic surgery and take written and oral tests. Check the American Board of Medical Specialties’ website or the ABPS’s website to see if a plastic surgeon is board certified. Also, ask if the plastic surgeon has hospital privileges. Even if your procedure will happen at an out-patient clinic, hospitals run background checks. It gives you added peace of mind about the caliber of doctor you’re choosing and the safety protocols in place. Recommendations and word of mouth are always excellent ways to find
services. Ask your friends and family, your doctors, or others you trust for plastic surgeon referrals. These days, many patients also look to online reviews or social media as their primary source of information about plastic surgeons. Just take what you read with a smidgeon of skepticism and criticism, especially from anonymous posters. Some plastic surgeons specialize in particular procedures. When choosing a plastic surgeon, try to find one that focuses on the type of procedure you want. It should at least be in their “top three.” Basically, the plastic surgeon should have performed this type of procedure once or more per week, preferably for five years or more. That way, you can know you’re in qualified hands. Treat the first consultation with a plastic surgeon like a job interview. Come prepared with questions about the procedure, recovery time, costs and fees, and the plastic surgeon’s specialties. During the consultation, pay attention to important details, such as the cleanliness of the office, and the plastic surgeon’s bedside manner and attentiveness to your questions and concerns. Perhaps most important, pay attention to your gut feelings. Ask to review before and after photos, and make sure the after photos are several months post-procedure. Don’t rush into a decision. Take your time to talk to multiple plastic surgeons to ensure you’re choosing the right one for you and the procedure you want. Even after you choose a plastic surgeon, it is best to take the time to make sure you and the plastic surgeon are on the same page about your needs.

COUGHS AND COLDS, CUTS AND SCRAPES, SINUS INFECTIONS, SKIN RASHES, SPRAINS AND STRAINS—LIFE HAPPENS , and you can’t
predict when you will need medical care. And doesn’t it seem that your child always gets sick on a Friday night after his or her pediatrician’s office has closed for the weekend? Luckily, urgent care centers—which diagnose and treat illness or injuries that do not appear to be life threatening— provide easy access to healthcare for the times when your primary care physician’s office isn’t open, or when you can’t get in to see him or her with an immediate appointment.
“When choosing an urgent care facility, find out how long it’s been in operation and how long the providers have been practicing there. Longevity means they are familiar with you and your family. Also, a facility that has two providers per shift allows them to spend more time with you and offers the patients more choices, such as a male or female provider.” DR. JEFFREY FISHER
It might seem obvious, but a convenient location is important. Select a few urgent care clinics closest to where you live and then check them out. Start with their hours. Are they open seven days a week? How late are they open? Unlike 24/7/365 freestanding emergency rooms, urgent care clinics tend to close in the early evening. Also understand what type of healthcare professional you will be seen by

Just like primary care practices, not all urgent care centers are alike. Do some homework up front before you need one and are compelled to just rush to the nearest clinic. during your appointment. While many urgent care facilities have a family medicine physician on staff, others are staffed with physician assistants or nurse practitioners. Lots of people are comfortable being seen by a nurse practitioner or a physician assistant, but if you prefer a medical doctor, find an urgent care clinic which has a physician on site. For most of us, cost is a factor, and there are a few unique considerations when it comes to urgent care facilities. Some urgent care clinics bill as ERs, which can drive your out-of-pocket costs up. Ask the urgent care clinic in advance if it bills as an urgent care facility or as an ER. Get the name of the person who tells you and make note, so you can use it in the unlikely case you get a surprise bill. You should also determine what type of diagnostic testing an urgent care clinic conducts on-site. Do they have X-ray equipment? Do they draw blood and perform tests? Some urgent care centers have trained phlebotomists available to take a blood sample and test for things such as complete blood counts, therapeutic blood levels, and full lab panels. Do they take urine samples and perform urinalysis? Are EKGs available? Once you have narrowed down your choices, stop by each clinic and get to know them before you need them. Does the office appear clean and wellkept? Does the staff seem friendly and helpful? Is there plenty of parking? When all your must-have and many of your “nice to have” boxes are checked off, then you’ve found your urgent care clinic of choice.

“THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKING, AND THAT’S JUST WHAT THEY’LL DO,” unless the feet inside are suffering—then the
boots either stay in the closet or move slowly in short strides. Painful, uncomfortable, irritated feet are problematic and require immediate attention. In some cases, minor foot pain can be addressed by a primary care physician. Other times, a foot specialist, known as a podiatrist, is required. While selecting a podiatrist may initially seem straightforward, many specialties and sub-specialties exist. In most cases, your primary care physician will assess your need and steer you in the right direction, but it doesn’t hurt to be well informed during the process.
“Finding the right podiatry team is so vitally important. A good podiatrist will look you over from head to toe, determining how your feet affect your whole body. Correcting your gait at the foundation (feet) prevents knee, hip, and back pain. For surgical procedures, it is very important to find a foot and ankle surgeon who listens and understands your goals. Choose a team with experience and the expertise to carry out the procedures in a safe manner with an exceptional outcome.” DAN BHAKTA, DPM, FACFAS
According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, “Feet are complex anatomical structures, all-in-one stabilizers, shock absorbers, and propulsion engines that are instrumental to overall health and well-being.” Since feet require the care of specialists specifically trained to treat them, you should make sure you look for a highly-qualified Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM). DPMs have completed years of study and training of the foot and ankle through podiatric medical school and training via residency. In choosing a podiatrist, understand there are those who focus on sports injuries, age related degeneration, conditions affected by diabetes, work injuries, and others. Is your issue something minor in need of a short-term solution, or will your condition require repeat visits or perhaps even physical therapy?
Foot and ankle problems can stem from a variety of root causes such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and vein disease. Make sure to understand what’s actually happening with your feet and ankles, and find a specialist who understands the cause and doesn’t just treat the symptom. Other issues include arthritis, injuries, skin disorders, nerve damage, muscle and tendon issues, toe or toe nail problems, and joint conditions. Ask questions and do your best to get a full picture of your particular affliction. Don’t hesitate to do your own research. Once you’ve narrowed down your options for a podiatrist that fits your needs, look at online reviews and check the American Podiatric Medical Association website (APMA.org) for more information. Your feet need to last a lifetime, so preventative care is important as well. Choose properly fitting shoes and avoid those that don’t offer stability and comfort. If pedicures are among your must-haves, select a place that is known for its cleanliness, one that uses disposable liners in the foot wash. If you have children, be aware their feet can grow a half size in just a few short months, so frequently check their shoe fit. Don’t wear closed toe, tight-fitting shoes without socks and make sure to keep shoes clean and properly aired. Your feet are your foundation, and while it may be easy to overlook them, make it a priority to include routine care and maintenance before they demand it! And if you find yourself in need of a podiatrist, many great resources are available to help in your selection. Use the tips above to get started and you’ll be on your way to successful treatment.

their Find-A-Dentist tool found at FindADentist.ADA.org. Personal comfort is also extremely important. One of the best ways to determine that is to schedule a consultation appointment with the dentists under consideration, and the ADA recommends visiting more than one dentist. Try to determine if you would feel comfortable asking questions and describing symptoms. Would you feel comfortable asking for pain medication, expressing your fears and anxieties, or discussing a procedure?
PRACTICING GOOD DENTAL HEALTH is not only essential to
maintaining a healthy mouth, but is an important element in your overall health and wellbeing. The complications that can grow out of a lack of dental care can extend far beyond gingivitis. There is a proven link between gum disease and heart disease, and almost all systemic diseases have an oral component, including oral cancer, diabetes, and kidney disease. Seeing a dentist regularly is the only sure way to identify and treat dental problems. Hopefully, the following suggestions will help you find the dentist that’s right for you.
A good way to start is to ask for recommendations. Ask family, friends, and co-workers what they like about their dentist. And you might consider asking your physician for a referral.
“Look for someone who has been practicing for many years with plenty of continued education. The office needs to be inviting and comfortable. The service in all aspects has to be excellent, and if there are challenges, they need to be addressed and resolved accordingly. It is only the service that separates any office in any industry!” DR. STEVEN THOMAS
COSMETIC & RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY
If you have dental insurance, be familiar with your benefits as your choice of a dentist could be determined by your plan. For example, dental HMOs limit your choice to a dentist who’s a member of their network. If yours is a PPO plan, visiting a network dentist can make a significant difference in your copayment levels. Location and office hours are also important. Choose a dentist close to your home or work. This will make it easier to schedule appointments and to arrive on time. The American Dental Association (ADA) provides a quick and easy way to locate dentists readily accessible to you by using
What about professional qualifications? The office staff should be able to tell you about the dentist’s training and experience, and if they seem uncomfortable answering your questions, or you’re uncomfortable with their answers, consider finding another dentist. In addition to the dentist, look at the office staff. Were they friendly and accommodating? And what about the overall condition of the office? Many of us believe that restaurant restrooms tell a lot about the condition of the kitchen. Much the same may be said about a dental office. If the surroundings are clean and modern and the magazines current, chances are much the same can be said about the cleanliness and care of the dental equipment. Emergency care is another consideration. What happens if you have a dental emergency either during regular office hours or at night or on weekends? Ideally, a dentist should not refer you to an emergency room. Instead, you should be able to contact your dentist—or a suitable substitute— by calling an answering service, cell phone, or pager. As with any other medical specialist, you need to spend time carefully choosing your dentist. Making this choice may at first seem like an easy task, but dental care is a very personal service, and you want a relationship that will last for years to come.

YOU’RE PROBABLY HEARING THE TERM “MED SPA” MORE AND MORE,
but what makes a med spa unique? A med spa is basically a hybrid between a medical clinic and a day spa (“medical spa”), typically operating under the supervision of a doctor or medical director and treating conditions on your body and face such as laser hair removal, tattoo removal, photo facials, body contouring, permanent fat reduction treatments, injections like Botox and dermal fillers, chemical peels, skin tightening, and rejuvenation. Non-surgical day spa procedures are less invasive than plastic surgery, and don’t involve the same level of complexity. But it’s still important to thoroughly vet potential med spas to ensure your treatment is performed safely and in a manner that delivers the results you desire.
Look for a med spa with extensive experience performing the specific treatment you want. You can gather names of potential spas online, or from friends and local publications. Once you have some promising candidates, browse online reviews. Keep in mind there will always be complainers. Look for an overall pattern of satisfaction from the clients, especially those who’ve had the same procedure you are looking for. Go ahead and book an initial consultation at a few locations and make a list of pros and cons. At each facility, inquire who will be performing your procedure and how much experience they have with that particular treatment. How long have they been doing it and how many do they perform each month? What are their credentials? You want your procedure performed by someone with the proper training, licensing,
Ask questions about your procedure and what you can expect. Discuss your desired goals from the treatment. Ask for a tour of the facility and assess the cleanliness. Ask about the technology used for your procedure. Take the opportunity to talk to as many staff members as possible. Do they seem knowledgeable and professional? You want to feel comfortable with the entire practice, not just the person performing your procedure. Med spa treatments and technology change rapidly. You want a facility with the latest technology and a commitment to continuing education. Take notes on their technology, so you can do some research to see if they’re using the most up-to-date, least invasive technologies available. Ask how many treatments it should take to see the results you want. Of course, individuals will differ. Some clients may see results after one treatment while need several sessions for the results they desire. They should be able to give you an average expected treatment period though, and shouldn’t pressure you into having additional services you don’t want. If you’re feeling pressured to sign up for treatments you don’t think you need, seek a second opinion. The best way to find the ideal med spa is to identify what your issues are and see which med spas offer those treatments in your area. Then investigate the above points to see who stacks up and where you feel more comfortable and welcome. At the end of the day, trust your instinct to choose the med spa that will be best for you.

AN INSURANCE AGENT
BY M E R E D I T H K N I G H T
keep an eye out for reviews and educational content.
IF YOU’RE IN THE MARKET FOR AN INSURANCE AGENT, you may be tempted to shop by price. But there are other variables to consider. In fact, price may not even be at the top of the list. Lower pricing could mean inferior coverage, which is all well and good until you experience a loss that isn’t covered. Begin by deciding whether you want to work with an insurance broker (someone who represents a variety of insurance companies) or a captive insurance agent (someone who represents a single insurance company). The next variable is what type of insurance you need, since agents may specialize.
“Careful consideration needs to be applied when selecting your insurance. What coverage do you need for your protection? Understand what is covered in the policy contract so you don’t have a huge unexpected out of pocket expense on a claim. Is there a professional who will educate and review options and be there in your time of need? The consequences can be huge.” AL CLARK
You want to find an experienced agent. Look for someone with credentials such as CIC (Certified Insurance Counselor), CISR (Certified Insurance Service Representative), CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter), ARM (Associate in Risk Management) and CRM (Customer Relationship Management), which tells you they’ve put in time completing continuing education. You can also inquire about how many years of experience they have. Ask any agent you’re considering for client references and call a few. Ask them which companies they represent and why they chose those companies. Do some sleuthing online to determine whether agents you’re considering are involved in any lawsuits. Read online reviews and look for articles they may have written or in which they’ve been quoted. Visit their social media and
Once you’ve narrowed your search, ask the agents you’re still considering to give you a quote on the insurance you need. How thoroughly do they explain your coverage and why prices may vary, if they provide more than one quote? How did they determine what coverage you need? Do they communicate in a way you can understand and thoroughly answer all your questions? Can you save money by bundling coverage? Keep in mind that there are different types of carriers, and coverages can vary dramatically. Your agent should work to ensure you have the coverage you need, even if that means paying a little more, and should be able to help you understand all the moving parts. There are some other things to consider, like how conveniently located an agent’s office is and whether they’re licensed in other states, if there’s a possibility you’ll relocate or expand your business interests into other states. Ultimately what separates a good agent from a great agent is customer service. Ask potential agents how often they plan to check in with you throughout the year to inquire about changes that might affect your policy. How will they update you on important regulations, new laws, changes with your carrier, and anything else that might affect you as the end customer? Your agent should be reachable at all times, because when the unexpected happens that’s when you’ll need them most. Once you choose an agent, plan to stay active with your insurance coverages. Doing a little legwork now should help you land an insurance agent you can trust to provide you with the best coverage for your individual needs, and your changing needs for years to come.

VASCULAR SPECIALISTS ARE SPECIFICALLY TRAINED TO DIAGNOSE
and treat vascular conditions such as varicose veins, aortic aneurysms, carotid artery disease, deep vein thrombosis, and peripheral artery disease (PAD). Of course, any time you choose a doctor to trust, the decision is important. But when dealing with the health of your veins, finding a vascular specialist who’s knowledgeable, confident, skilled, and capable is vital to your future health. While you can see your primary care doctor for vein-related issues, a vascular and vein specialist is someone who’s dedicated their life to specifically treating venous health concerns and will know much more about venous insufficiency than a general practitioner.
Once you decide you want to take your condition to a vein specialist, you might go a step further and search for a specialized vascular surgeon, who is a specialist with the knowledge to diagnose your specific problem and the understanding of the optimum treatment available to correct it. While there are now many viable, non-invasive treatment options, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. The doctor you choose should be committed to taking adequate time and conducting extensive testing to develop the best treatment plan for your unique venous insufficiency.
“This is a very common medical condition that is easily treatable and is covered by most insurance companies including Medicare and Tricare." DR. ERIC EIDSON
Begin by asking your primary care physician for referrals. You can also ask family and friends about experiences they’ve had with local vein specialists. Then check that your insurance covers the specialist they recommend. Read |
After that, it’ll be time to visit some clinics. Because treatment can be stressful, look for an office that’s comfortable, with a staff that makes you feel welcome and at home. Ask how they’ll analyze your condition. What diagnostic equipment will they use and why? How will they determine the best treatment for your unique case? The specialist should take the proper time to run tests and discuss your symptoms with you at length. Look for a specialist who’s committed to exploring all non-invasive options before discussing surgery. Except in rare cases, vein stripping has become a thing of the past. Newer treatments are minimally invasive with little pain, reduced stress, and minimal recovery time. Some of the non-invasive treatments a specialist might recommend are endovenous laser treatment, ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy, spider vein sclerotherapy, and veinlite sclerotherapy. Unlike older methods of treatment, these procedures involve minimal discomfort and don’t require long hospital stays. They address venous problems without leaving scarring, so patients aren’t trading in one visible condition for another. And patients are usually back on their feet and enjoying life the same day. Seeing a specialist about your venous health concerns should be a productive, comfortable process that ends in the best results possible for you. Take the proper time now to find a specialist who’ll deliver the venous treatment you need and deserve.

THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION reports that
more than 600,000 people die of heart disease in the United States annually, accounting for a whopping 25 percent of all U.S. deaths. When it comes to matters of the heart, choosing the right cardiologist—a doctor with special training and skill in finding, treating, and preventing diseases of the heart and blood vessels—is paramount. You and your cardiologist may tackle some important issues that impact your quality of life and longevity. He or she will not only diagnose and treat any pertinent conditions, but educate you on preventive measures, including diet and lifestyle changes.
“When choosing a cardiologist you should look for a board certified, fellowship trained physician with a convenient location and who is quick to respond to your questions. A cardiologist who listens to their patients and practices with the American College of Cardiology guidelines will benefit not only the patient but will also help with trying to control the rising cost of healthcare.” DR. LEVI A. RICE, JR. CARDIOLOGY PARTNERS
Start with some fundamentals such as location and accessibility when looking for a cardiologist. It’s easier to keep appointments if you don’t have to drive a long distance to get to your cardiologist. And you want a doctor who is accessible. If you must wait months for an appointment, you may have trouble getting subsequent timely appointments and therefore timely diagnostic testing and treatment. While location and accessibility are important, they shouldn’t be your only consideration. There are several subspecialties within cardiology. If you know the nature of your medical issue, it’s wise to search for a heart doctor who is experienced with your specific condition. If you haven’t been diagnosed with a condition that requires a subspecialist, start with a general cardiologist. They treat a wide range of issues that affect the heart and blood
You also need a doctor who matches your communication style and who educates you about your condition and preventive measures. You and your cardiologist should be a team with the same end goal—good heart health. During an initial consultation, ask questions, take notes, and be sure you understand the answers. Then ask yourself if you felt comfortable with the doctor and if so, why. If not, move on and see another doctor for consultation. Keep in mind, however, that a good bedside manner doesn’t automatically translate to the doctor being current in his or her knowledge. In addition, look for a cardiologist that is at the forefront of his or her specialty. The science of cardiovascular medicine is continually improving. You want a cardiologist who is familiar with these changes firsthand—one that is a part of advancing the field. Digging deeper, you may want to consider a cardiologist’s experience. Ask the doctors you’re considering how many times they’ve performed a particular procedure or their experience with a certain technology of condition. Lastly, being a board certified cardiologist means the doctor has not only studied this specialty but has also passed rigorous testing. If board certification is important to you, look for the letters FACC after the doctor’s name, which means Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (ACC). Cardiologists elected as fellows have demonstrated their commitment to the highest standards of patient care, according to the ACC. Finding the right cardiologist for yourself is an asset that’s worth your search.

AN ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON
WHEN YOU DECIDE YOU ARE READY TO SEE AN ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON,
you might experience both relief and anxiety. You know that you’re about to take a healing step toward recovery, but might not be sure how to select the right doctor. Choosing a qualified doctor to perform your surgery is one of the first and most critical steps on your path to wellness. The right surgeon will ensure you have a successful procedure and recovery and will help put you at ease every step of the way. But there are a few ways to make sure you’re making the best choice when it comes to an orthopedic surgeon.
As you begin your search, it’s always smart to ask your primary care doctor for referrals. You can also ask for recommendations from family members, friends, and other healthcare professionals. Once you have some names, spend some time on Healthgrades.com researching each surgeon’s credentials and experience. This free service is well worth the time you invest learning more about your potential doctor. Is the surgeon board certified? A certified doctor has the necessary training, skills, and experience to provide the best orthopedic care. Does the doctor have a history of malpractice claims or disciplinary actions? These are all important considerations when choosing a doctor who could potentially perform surgery on you. Think you’ve found a qualified candidate that you feel comfortable entrusting with your surgery? Schedule an appointment to interview the doctor.
When you go in, take a direct approach with your questions. Don’t shy away from asking what you really want to know. Find out how this particular orthopedic surgeon might take a different approach from another doctor. An experienced surgeon will be able to address any of your questions and concerns. Although you may wish to schedule your surgery quickly, don’t rush the process. It’s critical that you feel fully informed and find a surgeon you trust. While experience, credentials, and reputation remain critical elements in choosing an orthopedic surgeon, you should also consider how well you work with the doctor. Do you find it easy to communicate with him or her? Does the surgeon genuinely listen to your concerns and explain things in a manner that’s easy to understand? You may be working with this professional for years to come, so it’s important you feel comfortable for there to be a successful outcome. If you don’t feel like it’s a good fit, that’s okay. Continue your search. If possible, aim to find a doctor who is relatively close to your home or workplace. This makes it easier to get to any pre- or post-surgery appointments without the added hassle of a long commute. You should also confirm if your orthopedic surgeon is on your insurance provider’s list. You can call your insurance company directly or research on the company’s website to double check. When you or a loved one require surgery or another medical procedure, you only want the best. Through referrals and proper research, you can seek out a highly skilled orthopedic surgeon you can trust to deliver the best possible care.
A CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON
IF YOU’VE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE, LUNG CANCER, OR ESOPHAGEAL CANCER, you’re probably feeling
overwhelmed right now. Take a deep breath. The next step is to find the right cardiothoracic surgeon to partner with your cardiologist, oncologist, or pulmonologist and coordinate your care. A cardiothoracic surgeon specializes in surgical procedures of the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other organs in the chest. Choosing the best one for you and your family can make a critical difference in your overall health and recovery.
“A good surgeon should offer advanced treatment to their patients and do so in a way that minimizes pain, risks, and recovery time. You should experience improved quality of life. With that in mind, find a surgeon who will work closely with you and your physician to tailor a treatment program designed specifically for you.” DARIEN BRADFORD
Before meeting with potential surgeons, it's helpful if you ask your cardiologist, oncologist or pulmonologist
MD, CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON
Your cardiologist, oncologist, or pulmonologist will likely offer you a short list of cardiothoracic surgeons whose work they respect and with whom they work well. When narrowing down your choices, education is the first thing to consider. A cardiothoracic surgeon is a doctor was has completed an additional two to three-year residency program in cardiothoracic surgery, after traditional medical school. Additionally, you can look for someone who is fellowship trained, giving them additional experience in their field or who is board certified which tells you they’ve voluntarily devoted extra hours and performed extra research to obtain board-certification. They also submit to continuing education and peer review to maintain that certification.

what questions you might ask, based on the specifics of your case. Some questions you might be prepared to ask are: What can I do to best prepare for surgery? How long should I expect to be in the hospital following my surgery? What should I expect as far as recovery time, and what limitations should I be prepared for during recovery? Any potential surgeon should complete a thorough exam to confirm your doctor’s findings and help you to feel comfortable about the upcoming procedure. They should take the time to answers your questions fully and ask enough questions themselves to understand your unique condition. The right surgeon will not only provide clear solutions for your medical problem, but will explain those solutions in language you understand and will make sure you’re comfortable with your choices regarding surgery. You should also feel comfortable with his staff. If you have a preference as far as hospital, make sure any potential surgeon holds privileges there. Look for a surgeon who treats you like an individual and makes you feel at ease; one with the expertise, experience, and empathy you want, who thoroughly explains your options, outcomes, and recovery period. If you’re having trouble deciding between qualified candidates, let your referring doctor be the tie-breaker. As you ponder the prospect of a major surgery, it's comforting to know you’re in the most experienced hands possible, and that the surgeon truly care about you and your health. Knowing you’ve found the right, best qualified surgeon will ease some of your anxiety which medical experts agree can have a direct, positive effect on your recovery.

A PET BOARDER
CHOOSING SOMEONE TO CARE FOR YOUR BELOVED PET IN YOUR ABSENCE IS A VERY IMPORTANT DECISION. Whether you plan to
be gone for a couple of days or for an extended period of time, it’s important that you feel confident and your pet will be safe and comfortable with your choice. Picking the right place for pet boarding will help both you and your beloved pet sleep easy during your absence.
“Never leave your dog or cat any place where they won’t let you see exactly where he or she will stay. Owners should take their pet into the kennel when dropping off. This helps your pet realize that it’s OK. When picking up, do the same thing. If they won’t let you go into the kennel—go someplace else.” DON PRAEGER
COUNTRY ACRES KENNELS
There are multiple options available, ranging from your local veterinary hospital, where you take your pet when they are sick, to boutique-style facilities such as very expensive pet resorts that can cost upwards of $50 to $100 per night. Other choices might be the neighborhood kid or the in-home sitter. Both of these have many inherent problems, some obvious and some not so obvious. However, the choice that the majority of pet owners make is a proper well established boarding kennel that has been around for a while. A real kennel is located on acreage, has plenty of green grass for dogs to run and play and has multiple different types of accommodations, both indoor and outdoor. These kennels have millions of dollars invested in facilities and staff and can be depended on to be there. As with any important service, a good place to start is with personal recommendations from friends and family.
Once you compare your options and decide on a handful of potential caretakers, formulate your list of questions. Do they offer services to both cats and dogs, and are they housed separately? Do they board sick and contagious pets that could make your pet sick? Are additional services or amenities available such as grooming, bathing, and behavioral training? Is medical documentation required, including vaccinations? Is the provider or facility up to date on any necessary kennel licenses or certifications? Is there any way to check in on your pet while you are away, through a smartphone app for example? Or better, can you have a friend or relative visit? Remember to consider the characteristics of your individual pet. Is your pet energetic? If yes, then ensuring they will have plenty of opportunities to interact with other animals as well as get adequate exercise will be important for you to consider. Do you have an older pet? If so, then boarding at a veterinary facility with access to medical care might be an important factor. If bringing your pet with you is an option, you can also research service providers in the area where you will be traveling so you can visit them. These options may help to reduce the risk for stress-related complications such as food protest among others. Finally, remember to allocate some time to visit the facility in person. You should look for any boarding facility to maintain a clean, temperate, and spacious business with plenty of space for dogs to run and play. A friendly and engaged staff who cares about animals should be evident. No matter what you choose, remember that no amount of research will take the place of your gut instinct, so if you see red flags, heed them. In the end, choosing a pet provider you feel confident about can help ensure your pet enjoys their own “staycation” during your absence, and it will help to mitigate the feelings that come with leaving your furry friend behind.

or the more common and modern laparoscopic approach. In the latter, the surgeon makes small incisions, rather than a large incision, and inserts a small camera and tiny instruments into the openings to perform the surgery. Laparoscopic surgery tends to be less painful and has a shorter recovery time and potentially fewer complications.
TODAY, 7 IN 10 AMERICANS ARE EITHER OVERWEIGHT or obese For
many, traditional methods of losing weight—improved diet and more exercise—simply don’t work. If that’s true for you, perhaps bariatric surgery is a logical option. You should consider yourself a candidate for bariatric surgery if you have a BMI (body mass index) over 40 or you have a BMI of 35 with a serious health problem directly related to obesity such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, or sleep apnea.
The first step in bariatric surgery is choosing the surgeon who will be by your side during this life-changing experience, and there are several things to consider when choosing the one who’s right for you.
“Other qualifications to
Insurance deserves serious attention. Many insurance companies will provide a list of surgeons that they cover in your area. Or, a company may stipulate that the surgeon have specific qualifications and certifications in order to cover the surgery.
look for include fellowship in the ASMBS, the primary organization for ongoing education, and legislative support for obesity issues on a national level.” DR. DAVID DYSLIN
Beyond insurance, another vital consideration is the type of surgery that the surgeon performs. Two of the more common types are the sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass surgery. The surgeon can perform each of these operations using either the traditional open-incision laparotomy technique
You need to consider a surgeon’s qualifications. Is the surgeon board-certified by either the American Board of Surgery or the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery? Certification by either indicates that the bariatric surgeon has completed a training program and met certain predefined standards. It also ensures they have passed both oral and written exams. Recertification is required every 10 years. Beyond board certification, it’s helpful to know how many surgeries the bariatric specialist has performed as there is a direct relationship between the number of surgeries and the risk of complications. It’s not unusual to expect that the more surgeries the doctor has performed, the fewer number of patients will experience complications, owing to the doctor’s increased familiarity with the procedure. This is certainly one of the most important factors to consider when choosing your bariatric surgeon. You also need to ask about the support services available following surgery. Follow-up care is extremely important, and the center should support such things as psychological counseling, physical therapy, and nutrition guidance to help manage your new dietary regiment and eating habits. Finally, while there are many things to consider in choosing your bariatric surgeon, there is also one important question to ask yourself: Do you like him or her? You should be able to build a relaxed rapport with the surgeon, and if you don’t feel comfortable asking questions, they’re probably not the surgeon for you, whatever their qualifications. Trust your instincts, and if you feel uncomfortable, keep looking.

Be skeptical of anyone who wants you to pay for the entire job before they begin. The industry standard is to get a deposit for one-third of the total. Always use a credit card or check for the paper trail. Wait to cut the final check until the roof repair has been completed.
THERE ARE MANY REASONS WHY IT IS WISE TO HIRE A PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTOR TO FIX YOUR ROOF. You can get a warranty on any
work performed, so that the roofer accepts responsibility if anything goes wrong. You will get access to a broader range of roofing materials than are available at home improvement stores. You will save time by having a professional perform the job rather than fitting it into your own schedule. You can save money in some cases, based on volume pricing of materials. Finally, you protect your safety.
Once you decide to hire a pro, selecting the specific contractor can be challenging. However, following key consumer advice can guide the process. You will get a better sense of a fair price and better sense of quality markers as you talk to multiple contractors. You may pay a bit higher for a firm based on how you feel about a company. Make sure contractors you’re considering don’t have unresolved complaints with the local Home Builders Association or Better Business Bureau. Get recommendations from claims adjusters, insurance agents, colleagues, or neighbors. Check for insurance. The company you use should have liability insurance and worker’s compensation. Ask them for their insurance certificates. Call the insurance company to confirm the legitimacy of the certificates.
Look over samples of the contractor’s work. Any reputable roofer should have a portfolio. These samples will give you a sense of the expertise or focus certain contractors have. The level of sophistication within a portfolio will help to showcase breadth of skill. The best-case scenario is that you can get a few addresses and go look at the outcomes in person, possibly even talking to the homeowners. Watch out for scams, especially related to hail damage or immediately following a series of storms. Roofing scammers or “storm chasers” often attract people by leaving fliers on doorknobs or through door-to-door sales. Either way, the people involved will talk about how many people in the area do not know that their roofs were damaged but that insurance carriers are providing compensation. Generally there is not roof damage unless the hail diameter is quite large—over an inch in diameter—and it is usually not substantial unless they are at least golf-ball size. The BBB noted that damage from a hailstorm will be inconsistent across your roof, so some individuals will take advantage of that randomness and misrepresent your roof damage. Hiring a roofer can be tricky, so you need to make sure you are trusting someone with the necessary experience, credibility, and skill to perform the job. By talking with multiple contractors, knowing what you should expect from credible firms, and being aware of scams, you can increase your chance of satisfaction with the roofer you select.

A HAIR SALON
You just saved yourself the heartache and hassle of a bad haircut. WHETHER YOU’RE LOOKING FOR AN IMAGE-TRANSFORMING HAIRCUT OR A QUICK TRIM around the ears, you need a hair salon you
can trust. When you find a great salon, you’ll also find a great hair stylist who knows how to listen well, make expert recommendations, and put you completely at ease. Whatever your personal style, there’s a salon to fit, from ultra-luxurious places serving champagne to no-frills salons where you can stop in for a quick cut. If you’re new to the area or if you just want a change, read on for ways to find the best hair salon for you.
Just like you would research running shoes or kitchen appliances before you make a purchase, it’s crucial to research hair salons. You can’t return a bad haircut, so make sure you investigate properly. Get online and search for hair salons that specialize in your needs and preferences. Do you want an expert on curly hair? Need a phenomenal colorist? Searching for a specialist in extensions? Do you want a spalike atmosphere or a family-friendly spot you can bring the kids? Look for local hair salons that offer what you’re seeking. Don’t overlook the power of word of mouth. Ask your friends, co-workers, and neighbors about their favorite salon or hair stylist. You might discover a hidden gem right in your neighborhood. If you know someone with a hair style you love, ask him or her who created the look. If they love their hairdresser, they can refer you. And if they don’t?
In your search for hair salons, it’s also helpful to check local publications and browse the online scheduling websites that area hairstylists use to book appointments. Websites such as StyleSeat, Vagaro, and Schedulicity can offer a goldmine of information. You can discover nearby stylists and read reviews, compare pricing, and explore portfolios that showcase colors, cuts, and styles. The best part is that you can browse from the comfort of home whenever it’s convenient, allowing you to make sure the hair salon and stylist fit your budget and specifications. If you think you’ve found a winner, book a consultation. Many hair salons and stylists offer free consultations, giving you a chance to decide if a new salon is right for you. When you go in for a consultation, you can chat with the stylist about what you’re looking for and get a feel for the overall salon. Take a look around. Is the salon modern, clean, and well-kept? Is there a steady stream of other customers? Does it offer the kind of environment you’re seeking? If you feel like you connect well with the stylists and you like the overall atmosphere, you likely discovered your new hair salon. There’s nothing like the confidence boost of a great haircut. Expert hair stylists know how to trim, shape, and layer with precision. Use the advice above to discover your ideal hair salon, and you’ll be on your way to looking and feeling your best in 2019.

A BIOIDENTICAL HORMONE CENTER
IF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SYMPTOMS OF DIMINISHED HORMONES,
there’s one thought that may come to mind—how much you miss them! Starting as early as age 30, hormone levels begin to drop in both men and women. The symptoms can be devastating—chronic insomnia, fatigue, anxiety, low libido, difficulty concentrating, hair loss, and weight gain—just to name a few in a long list. Wouldn’t it be great to reverse your internal clock? Hormone replacement therapy may be the answer, and many people choose “natural” bioidentical hormones. Derived from plant sources, they are considered to be molecularly identical to the hormones your body produces.
Although aging is the major culprit, hormonal imbalances are also frequently due to physical, environmental, or medical stresses. While it may be tempting to try one of the many do-ityourself home remedies that promise miraculous results, it’s a dangerous proposition that you would probably do best to avoid. Instead, choose a hormone replacement center that is under the direct supervision of a physician, or a private practice physician who is experienced in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). Hormones are a complex cocktail of chemical messengers in the body created in the endocrine glands and secreted directly into the blood stream to be transported to tissues or organs. Once you have narrowed down centers or doctors to see for a consultation,
BY A N N E T T E B R O O KS
make a list of questions to bring with you. It will help you remember exactly what you should ask, and jotting down the answers will help ensure that you make the best comparison among providers before you make your final selection. For example, ask where the physician completed his or her hormone training and the duration of the training. A weekend course is different than more extensive training. Also ask how long he or she has been treating patients with hormone deficiencies. The more experience the better. Hormonal balancing is not always an exact science, and no two patients are the same, as hormone levels vary between people. As you compare, look for BHRT providers who offer customized treatments based on your individual symptoms and hormone levels. A quality center will look at your health history and perform a medical exam, as well as blood, saliva, and/or urine testing to determine your current hormone levels. These tests allow providers to tailor a program specific to you instead of using a onesize-fits-all approach. They should also rule out any diseases or serious underlying conditions that can mimic the same symptoms as hormonal deficiencies. Treatment without testing should give you caution. Another consideration is the BHRT delivery methods offered. BHRT doses may be administered via patches, pills, gels or creams, sublingual tablets, injections, and small, time-released pellets placed in the fatty tissue under the skin. Recently, pellets have become very popular with high patient satisfaction because they are designed to consistently release steady, physiologic doses of hormones around the clock, which helps you experience stable hormone levels. A generation ago, men and women had no alternative but to live with feeling tired, run down, unsexy, and worn out due to hormonal deficiency. Not today. BHRT has helped countless people feel younger, healthier, and more full of life.

SELECTING A PRIVATE SCHOOL IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST DECISIONS YOU WILL MAKE AS A PARENT. Few other decisions will have a
greater impact on their future happiness and success and on forming the person your child will become than what school they go to. Many parents send their children to a private school to receive more individual attention and to be in an environment that offers and reinforces academic rigor. Special needs are another consideration, as well as religious teaching, programs that further develop a child’s talents, and an environment that supports the development of emotional and interpersonal social skills.
“Education doesn’t happen in a classroom, under the instruction of a stranger, 5 days a week. Education begins in the home, it’s shaped by our environments, and it’s supported by a community of teachers. Education happens everywhere; our farms, our shops, our pulpits. Teachers are everywhere; grandparents, neighbors, pastors, and friends.” CHRIS HARPER
Next, create a collection of important criteria such as single-sex versus coed, distance from home or work, class size, budget, religious teachings, available extracurricular activities, and others— and develop a list of potential schools to compare. This will help you narrow your selection down to a handful of the best prospects. Before you schedule school tours, prepare a list of questions to ask.
DEAN OF ADVANCEMENT, GRACE PREP
With so much at stake, it’s wise to adopt a well-thought-out approach to school selection. But before you begin identifying and analyzing prospects, consider your child’s needs. Think about the kind of student your child is and what type of environment he or she will most likely succeed in. It’s also important to recognize that the school which might have best served you may not necessarily be the right choice for your child.
For example, ask about the school philosophy and vision, class sizes and student-to-teacher ratios, co-curricular activities, and how technology is integrated into the classroom and curriculum. Inquire about teacher qualifications and the professional development opportunities that are available to them. If a college preparatory education is important to you, ask about college matriculations, available AP classes, and even travel-abroad programs. Additionally, be sure to ask what type of student the school is looking for. If their answer doesn’t fit your child, he or she may not thrive or feel comfortable at that school. Once you have a short list of schools and a set of questions, you’re ready to begin touring. The school visit is a chance to establish what your wishes and expectations are of the school, and what the school’s expectations are of their students. A school may look good on paper, but there’s nothing like experiencing the environment and programs first hand. When visiting a school with your child, carefully observe the students, teachers, and parents. Look into the classrooms to see if the students appear engaged. Are they talking with one another, or is the teacher sitting behind the desk while the kids work? Can you envision your child being successful at this school? Does it feel right? And don’t forget to check out the culture of the parking lot. What are the other parents like? Do they seem open and welcoming? Ultimately, the final decision comes down to both you and your child. In the end, as a parent, it’s important to listen to your children and trust their instincts as well as your own.

THE SWELTERING DAYS OF SUMMER ARE A DISTANT MEMORY, and especially in our neck of the woods it’s getting to be time to think about comfortable outdoor living. The pool may be closed, but the grills are about to heat up, and patio seating and deck dining becomes more appealing. Nothing is quite as inviting as a sweet patio set up or a freshly built deck to accommodate outdoor entertainment or even late night star gazing. Being outdoors is not only fun, it’s necessary for our health. The EPA says indoor air pollutants can be 2 to 5 times greater than outdoor pollutants and in some case, exponentially worse!
Many of us would probably like to spend more time outside, but we just haven’t gotten around to updating or transforming that muddy backyard or rickety old deck. Say you’re now ready to get started on an outdoor project and know you can’t handle it yourself—where do you start? How do you choose the right patio and deck company to fit your needs? Outdoor living spaces have grown in popularity over the years, and so have the number of companies offering to create them. With so many professionals to choose from, it’s important to do thorough research. You might start with referrals from people you know, online reviews, or both. Look to local pros if possible, as you can often save money if they don’t have to travel a long distance.
Select a handful of companies whose work you like (not every contractor will have the same vision) with a solid track record and good reviews. From there, schedule them to come to your home, offer ideas, and give you an estimate. Most companies offer free estimates and it pays to comparison shop. Be prepared with ideas and pictures of outdoor spaces you like, as well as realistic expectations on cost. Consider what size deck or patio you desire, the levels, the materials you prefer, and any additional features you may want. Railings, lighting, and unique designs will add to the base cost. As the professional evaluates your space, ask for their opinion. Someone with extensive experience will have ideas you haven’t considered. If budget is your main concern, be upfront about it. Having a company bid for a fully loaded project when you have a limited and locked budget will be a waste of time for both of you. Ask questions during the estimate. How many decks and patios have you built? May I see photos of your previous work? Who pulls the permits and marks the utility lines? What kinds of materials do you have available and where do they come from? What kind of insurance do you carry? What is the work and payment schedule? You may have more questions but these are a good place to start. If you have done your homework and are fully engaged with the contractor during the estimate, you are far more likely to acquire the finished result you envisioned.

IT’S A SWEET REALITY OF PARENTHOOD: You’re only as happy as
your children. Their happiness is essential when it comes to choosing the right preschool. This isn’t just a place where your child spends a few hours each week—it’s where they receive their educational start, and where they grow, learn, and develop in their most formative years. As parents, it’s crucial to select a preschool your child looks forward to attending each day, and one that provides your child a safe, nurturing and educational environment. There are a few ways you can make sure you’re picking a good school where your child can thrive.
“When choosing a preschool, health and safety are always a parent’s first concern. When touring ask yourself if the school seems well maintained. How does it make you feel when you walk in? Does the preschool provide a warm and stimulating environment that fosters early learning and development? A high quality educational preschool can position your child for academic and social success for years to come.” LYNNE GROFF, LMSW
OWNER, PRIMROSE SCHOOL OF N.E. GREEN OAKS
First, you’ll want to develop a short list of preschools that meet your family’s needs and align with your parenting approach and expectations. Look for schools located close to your home that offer hours that work with your schedule. Also research after-hours options, tuition, class size, and staff-child ratio. Many preschools have established application and admission procedures, so find out about these timelines before going in for a tour. Once you have a few preschools in mind, make an appointment to visit with directors and teachers. It’s important to see the school firsthand and get a feel for the environment and the curriculum. Take a moment to observe what’s happening in different classrooms. Do the teachers exude warmth and kindness when interacting with kids? Also find out about teachers’
educational background and experience. It’s important that your child’s teacher understands how children grow and develop and can create developmentally appropriate curriculum. Teachers and staff should be certified in early childhood education, but should also be CPR-certified and know how to administer first-aid in case of an emergency. Depending on your preschooler’s age, he or she might not be able to give you the full scoop on their school day. While older kids can tell you all about their favorite teachers or things they like or dislike about school, younger kids often can’t clearly express themselves yet. This makes evaluating a preschool all the more important. You want to make sure you’re entrusting your child to loving adults who will properly care for and educate your kids. Find out how discipline is handled and how good behavior is rewarded, and ask if visiting the school during a normal school day is possible so you can see how things work for yourself. Before enrolling your child, also consider how your child’s day will be structured. Are there plenty of opportunities for active play? Do kids receive table time and daily exposure to fine motor activities? When it comes to napping, will you need to supply a nap mat or pillow? Don’t forget to ask about potty training. Some schools require children to be fully potty trained, while others provide assistance as your child moves out of diapers. When choosing the right preschool, it’s imperative that parents do their research. The right school will set your children up for success and keep them safe and happy.

FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO GET IN SHAPE and enjoy variety in their
workouts, gyms and health clubs provide a multitude of choices for calorie-busting sweat sessions. These fitness facilities offer members several ways to get their hearts racing, whether they hop on the treadmill or rowing machine for a solo workout or they join in a group cycling, kickboxing, or Pilates class. There’s certainly no shortage of gyms or health clubs in our area, so how do you decide which one to join? Before you lace up your shoes, follow these pointers for picking the best one for you.
Whether you’re a health club maven or you’re new to the gym scene, the first step to choosing a new fitness facility is to pick one you’ll actually attend. It’s all about location. If you’re going to invest in a membership or buy a pack of classes, the gym must be accessible and convenient. Choose one close to your home or one that you can easily access on your way to or from work. Ideally, your new gym should be 5 or 10 minutes away. Be sure to check the hours, as well. If the gym isn’t open when it’s convenient, it’s all too easy to find an excuse not to go. When you have narrowed down a few gyms close to your home or workplace, the next step is to consider size. Do you like the energy and activity of a large health club? Or would you feel more comfortable working out in a smaller, more intimate gym? Women
who prefer exercising in the company of other women can also explore female-only gyms. Each facility offers its own culture, atmosphere, and offerings, so take some time to investigate the health clubs that interest you. If the first gym you visit doesn’t align with your expectations or desires, move on to the next one. It’s also a good idea to research the classes your potential gym offers. Have you always wanted to try Zumba? Do you like the social aspect of working out with other people? Many gym goers find it motivating and enjoyable to work out in a class atmosphere. If this sounds like you or if you’d like to try a group class, see if your gym offers classes in Pilates, yoga, cycling, or aerobics. Sometimes classes are included in the cost of membership, allowing you to try different activities without spending additional money. Classes also provide a way to socialize and meet new people. If you’re looking for a new workout buddy or someone to hold you accountable, make sure the gym you choose offers classes you would like to take. If you’re committed to losing weight or getting in shape this year, make it easy to stick to your resolutions. By choosing a gym that’s best suited for you, you’ll make working out rewarding and fun. When you enjoy what you’re doing, you’re more likely to stick with it long-term and reap the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

When contacting potential landscapers, one of the first questions you’ll want to ask is whether a firm is licensed and insured for the type of work that you’re requesting. Ask about their training, any certificates or degrees they hold, as well as their membership in professional landscape associations. Before you hire anyone, ask for a copy of their insurance binder and license. LUSH OR SKIMPY, VERDANT OR DREARY, YOUR LANDSCAPING OFFERS THE FIRST IMPRESSION OF YOUR HOME. If your yard doesn’t
compliment your house—or your lifestyle—installing new landscaping or making improvements to existing features can be a major financial investment. But it can also increase your home’s value and your family’s outdoor enjoyment. Choosing a landscaping company to help make it happen can be challenging, especially if you don’t yet know what you want. But the right firm will know what plants, trees, and hardscaping are appropriate and how to help it all flourish for years to come.
Begin by considering your goal for your property. Most contractors specialize in certain areas, whether hardscape or plantscape, decking, patios, driveways, fences, retaining walls or lawns, Japanese gardens, edible gardens, and others.
“When it comes to landscaping, you get what you pay for. If you are looking for the cheapest solution, you may end up with an unprofessional, unqualified landscaper. Having a budget in mind can help contractors to develop a solution for you that fits your needs and doesn’t give you sticker shock.” RICARDO BALDI
The American Society of Landscape Architects Firm Finder at ASLA.org can help you determine who in your area specializes in what you want. You might also ask friends and neighbors who they recommend, especially if they’ve done the type of project that interests you. Keep your eyes open for newly installed landscaping as you drive around town. Often, the landscape company will post a sign in the yard they have just completed advertising their phone number and website. Local nurseries may also recommend reputable contractors.
Contractors generally will meet with you at least once free of charge to discuss your project and many give free estimates. Try to find three or four contractors to come for an initial consultation to discuss your needs and explain their services. Ask them to bring a portfolio of photos of past landscape projects and prepare a list of questions in advance to ask each potential firm. Remember, contractors who’ve been in business for decades have experience and reputation behind them, while new contractors may have fresh ideas and may charge less. Find out the contractor’s experience level with the type of project you have in mind. The more specialized your project, the more important it will be. Ask for a final budget and timeline in writing (at least a good ballpark). Ask about permits for decks and fences, sheds, gazebos, and pools. Their familiarity with these details is a good sign of how experienced they are. Ask about warranties for defects in craftsmanship and improper installation of decks, patios, and irrigation systems. Ask whether they offer continuing maintenance of your landscaping (although this isn’t a deal breaker). And call a few former clients. Ultimately, you’re looking for the lowest-priced, best-qualified candidate with solid references, professional integrity, and an artistic eye. Good luck!

THERE ARE FEW THINGS AS IMPORTANT AS HEALTH. Creating a healthy lifestyle that includes good nutrition, exercise, adequate water consumption, and a good night’s rest early in life goes a long way toward illness prevention later in life. Perhaps you will be blessed with a long and happy life without the need for an unexpected hospital visit. Nevertheless, hospitals provide all levels of care, from simple day procedures to emergency treatments, intensive care, and of course, the more desirable ones—labor and delivery. It’s likely that at some point in your life, you will need a good hospital, and knowing how to choose one is knowledge worth having.
In most cases, one chooses a doctor first and the doctor determines which hospital a patient attends because he or she has privileges in that facility. Some doctors, however, practice in many hospitals and in some situations you may choose the hospital instead of the doctor. If you reside in a decent sized city, you probably have several hospitals from which to choose. Some are known for cardiac care, while others have cancer specialization, neonatal units, or other specialties. Matching the hospital’s specialty with your particular need can be the first step. For general care, consider the hospital’s locale and convenience. Some hospitals may not provide everything you need, so call in advance and find out the specific policies, procedures, and treatments they offer. If you expect a
There are several main points to consider when selecting a hospital. Popular review resource Consumer Reports rates hospitals considering useful criteria that you might also pay attention to, such as patient experience, patient outcomes, hospital practices, safety, and avoiding adverse effects. You can investigate how local hospitals perform in these categories online, or call them up and ask some questions. Hospital ratings can help you form an idea about what’s in store. While investigating local hospitals is of critical importance, it never hurts to look at some nationally-recognized hospitals as models so you can better understand what highly regarded hospitals look like. What features, services, accolades, and achievements do they receive recognition for? Is the hospital you’re considering similarly decorated? Do they elicit knowing and confident comments from people who have visited them, or are there more hesitant comments than statements of praise? Depending on your particular condition, it’s possible that only certain hospitals are best equipped to deal with it. Find out which hospital has the best reputation for dealing with the issue you plan to have treated, and do your best to understand why, especially in comparison with other options. Though a hospital visit is not necessarily something one looks forward to, it is usually necessary at some point in life. Knowing what the hospitals in your area offer and how they rate overall can be advantageous to not only your experience, but your health. After all, a hospital is more than just a building— it’s the comfort that knowing you’ve got one selected already can provide.

THERE ARE MANY EXCELLENT REASONS TO RIDE A BIKE. Cycling is
muscle-building, fat-burning, heart-healthy, and can greatly reduce your carbon footprint. Getting places on a bike puts you in closer contact with your environment than being shut up in a vehicle. Research has shown that bicycling can improve your mood, relieve stress, increase energy, and reduce fatigue. There’s no cost for fuel and even bicycle maintenance costs are negligible. But just as you want to give thought to the best bike for your needs, you want to choose a cycling shop that’s the ideal fit for you as well.
“The proper bicycle fit is essential. Look for a specialist who learns about you, evaluates you in the riding position, and configures your bike to meet your cycling goals.”
Be savvy when reading online reviews. Unfortunately, human nature is such that we often take time to complain when we’re dissatisfied but never quite get around to offering a compliment, when things go well. Expect a few Debbie Downers but look for an overall happy consensus among reviewers.
FOUNDER, TREK BICYCLES OF ARLINGTON
A good cycling shop should offer a variety of bicycles for different purposes (ex. road bikes, mountain bikes, or hybrids to accommodate both terrains). It should offer maintenance and good quality replacement parts. The shop should have a good reputation in the local biking community and be easily accessible from your home and/or work. Ask around about their customer service and read some online reviews to see how customers are treated and what the turnaround time is on repairs or part orders.
Now, consider the folks working in the cycling shop. If you’re really into cycling, you’ll enjoy taking your bike to someone who’s likeminded, rather than just a person who answered a notice in the want ads. Shop employees should be friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to help. Visit a few shops and, in addition to scoping out the inventory, engage the employees in conversation. They should possess knowledge of the various types of bicycles and their purposes. The employee should inquire about your height and inseam, when determining the best bike for you and should be able to recommend appropriate parts to be added or modified according to your comfort requirements. They should feel comfortable making these recommendations, after asking you questions about the way you’ll be using your bike and under what conditions. A good cycling shop should also be able to customize parts for their customers. Lastly, consider the quality of bicycle components in inventory. If there’s a wide range of prices, shop employee should be able to explain to you why the more expensive options are worth the price. If you find that your bicycle is durable, and parts aren’t wearing too soon, you can rest assured you ‘ve found the right shop for your biking needs. Once you have the perfect cycling shop team in your corner, keep this in mind. The CDC recommends 30 minutes of moderate physical activity like bicycling five days a week to reduce your chance of dementia, depression, anxiety, diabetes, colon cancer, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis by 40 percent. So, keep calm and bike on!

When searching for HVAC companies, you want to ensure they have the necessary experience and expertise to get the job done right. It takes a balance of time in the industry and keeping up with innovations that will land you the perfect company to work with.
DO YOU NEED TO REPAIR OR REPLACE YOUR HEATING, VENTILATION, OR AIR CONDITIONING UNIT? When you’re in a pinch, it can be all
too easy to pick the first company you see. However, with the next 15 to 20 years of your comfort on the line, and your system’s continued reliability crucially important, you want to make sure you pick the right HVAC company to install the right gear. But how to know which one is the most qualified, affordable, and right for you? There are a few things you can focus on to make sure you’ll get the best bang for your buck.
Think of your HVAC system as an investment for your property, because that’s exactly what it is. It is one of the largest costs of owning a home. Start with people you trust. What HVAC companies have your friends and family members used before? Before starting necessary research online or talking directly to the companies, know what you most likely need and the maintenance history of your system, so companies can more accurately provide what you’re looking for. One of the best methods of research is to hear from those who have hired HVAC companies before. Receive referrals or references from companies and read online reviews. After research, pick three to five to contact and get estimates from.
Anyone performing HVAC work needs to be licensed with the Contractors State License Board. You can verify their license numbers through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Similarly, make sure they have liability insurance and worker’s comp. If an incident occurs on your property and the company does not have these insurance policies, you could be responsible. Ask lots of questions and voice your concerns. You should consider asking additional questions of potential HVAC companies before you sign on the dotted line. For example, what brands do they service? What brands of cooling and heating systems do they provide? If you are replacing your system, see if the company works with new, efficient brands and offers rebates. Do they offer service contracts? Many companies offer maintenance plans that help make sure your systems will run smoothly for years to come. Because there are many factors that go into an HVAC estimate, including the size of your house, the number of rooms, and the pre-existing ductwork, do not accept an estimate over the phone or deal with a company that tries to do so. Always get the estimate in writing, and ensure it’s itemized. Also, try to have as much of your communication with companies in writing to protect everyone involved. Make sure that the HVAC companies inspect your home thoroughly and that the estimate reflects their evaluation. Doing so will help you make sure your home is appropriately temperate for the years ahead.
KEEPING YOU COMFORTABLE, NO MATTER THE SEASON Serving North Texas for Over 50 Years You can rely on Comfort Experts for all of your HVAC needs. Our goal is to provide excellent AC repair service you can rely on so you can enjoy the comfort of your home.

WHETHER YOU’RE SHOPPING FOR A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER,
looking for someone to photograph your newborn or graduate, or hoping for a showstopping Christmas card, the person you choose to capture these milestones needs to have more than expensive equipment. They need to know how to get the most from that equipment. They need to be an artist with a creative way of looking at things. Then there’s the business end. You need a photographer with a reputation for meeting their deadlines and who has an easy rapport with subjects of all ages. The person you choose will be creating irreplaceable mementos, so choose carefully.
“Ask to see a whole portrait session or a complete wedding. More is not always better, favor quality over quantity. Any photographer should be able to pull a few great images out of a session, but can they consistently produce that quality of images across a whole job? Also, be sure to check out credentials that are earned. A new camera doesn’t make someone a professional—there is a reason why photographers who have been around for years are still around.” LANDON DAY
Whenever your time of life and whatever milestones you’re hoping to capture in photos, you probably have friends in the same circumstances. If you’re shopping for a wedding photographer, who do you know who has just gotten married? If you’re looking for someone to photograph your high school senior, who are their friends’ parents hiring? With photography, like many other professions, positive word of mouth is a great advertisement. Begin your photographer search by asking others whose opinion you respect who they used, whether they liked the results, and why. Ask to see the photos they ultimately selected and ask about the process. Did the photographer make their subject feel comfortable and draw out their genuine personality? Was there sticker shock or did they feel like the end product was worth the price they paid?
Once you’ve gathered a few names, check out each photographer’s online presence. Read some reviews to see whether good experiences are common. Perhaps the most important part is to view some portfolios. As you analyze different images ask yourself whether their style fits what you’re looking for and that everything looks exposed, framed, and focused correctly. Underexposure will leave overpowering darks and shadows with muted tones and no highlights to capture your attention. Overexposed images will have burnt-out white highlights where you should see detail. Do colors look unnaturally bright, overpowering the photo? Ideally, the portfolio will include examples taken in different lighting (studio light, natural light, dim light, with a flash, and without). Are images sharp or blurry? Does the photo look overly processed, or is it natural? And has the photographer appeared to capture the essence and personality of the subject? Does the photographer’s style appeal to you? Are these pictures you’d display in your home? Is their website dated or current? A professional photographer should have an updated and professional website. Schedule a meeting with your top choices and don’t be shy about discussing money, including both session fees and post-shoot display products. Get pricing information on both the shoot itself and any deliverables like digital images and prints? Are there package deals? Professional photographers will layout all costs upfront so that there are no surprises. The images that your photographer ultimately capture will allow you to relive this special time of life. Do your research now to find the professional photographer who’ll create photos you’ll be proud to display for years to come.

A WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM
BY L A C E Y K U P F E R W U L F
0.9 kilograms) a week is the typical recommendations. Look for programs that seem sustainable to you and that provides plenty of education.
WITH THE NEW YEAR FAST APPROACHING, YOU DECIDED TO WANT TO FINALLY START LOSING WEIGHT and start the new year off to
a healthy start. Now the question is where do you begin? With so many different weight loss programs out there in the market, how do you know which one is the best choice for you? When choosing a weight loss program, you want something that will that is simple enough to follow, that you think is sustainable for the long term, and is personalized to your personal goals. Here are some guidelines to help you narrow your options.
Safety first! It is recommended to talk to your physician before starting any weight loss program. Keep your physician informed about what program you are starting and make sure to ask questions. Beware of programs that promise rapid weight loss in a short period of time, as they are sometimes unsafe or not credible. Look for programs that have credentialed providers such as registered dietitians, certified fitness professionals and health coaches. Avoid programs that are too restrictive and impractical, or that discourages entire food categories, as they do not work long term, and many times these diets cause your body to lack important nutrients. It’s tempting to buy into promises of rapid and dramatic weight loss, but a slow and steady approach is easier to maintain and usually beats fast weight loss for the long term. A weight loss of 0.5 to 2 pounds (0.2 to
Look for flexibility. Many programs also have the flexibility of online communication versus in-person meetings with groups or consultants. Although this may be convenient, ensure you will get the most out of the program by checking that the program still offers educational support, social support, and a way to report and track your progress. Look for a program that incorporates more than nutrition and fitness. All effective programs will encourage a well-rounded approach to make a lifestyle change. Look for programs with a focus on nutrition, activity, and behavior modifications. Successful weight loss requires a long-term commitment to making healthy lifestyle changes in eating, exercise, and behavior. Behavior modification is vital, and could have the greatest impact on your long-term weight-loss efforts. Look for programs that hold you accountable. Studies have shown that accountability is an important factor in losing and maintaining healthy weight loss. Whether you report to a health coach, a friend, or write in a journal, an effective weight loss program will provide you with the necessary tools to track your food intake, physical activity, and progress over time. Weight loss is possible. Researching and analyzing programs before you start might help you avoid major failure and disappointment, but it still may require a little experimentation before you find the perfect program for you. After all, weight loss programs do not come with a “one size fits all” tag!

skills, and experience to provide the best quality of chiropractic care.
THE RIGHT CHIROPRACTOR CAN COMPLETELY TRANSFORM YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE. Through hands-on therapeutic manipulation,
a chiropractor can help alleviate pain and discomfort, improve your body function, and put you on the road to wellness. They can also educate you about improving your ergonomics and overall health. If you suffer from persistent back or neck pain, or if you deal with migraines, sciatica, or arthritis pain, you may wish for a chiropractor’s expert touch. However, choosing one isn’t as simple as doing a web search for nearby chiropractic clinics. Here’s how to ensure you select the best chiropractor for your needs.
“If there’s an interruption in the nervous system, the body can’t operate or function at full capacity, leading to malfunction and disease. The cause of this interruption is often a misalignment of the vertebrae in the spine. If the spine can be realigned, health and function could be restored.” DR. GEORGE BOBBITT
If you’re just beginning your search, start by asking your primary care physician, physical therapist, or spine specialist for recommendations. Is there a chiropractor they would recommend to their own family members? Is there someone they view as particularly competent or skilled? You can pose the same questions to your family and friends. Keep in mind, though, that everyone has a different opinion of what constitutes an excellent chiropractor. If multiple people recommend the same one, chances are good you have found a gem. The American Chiropractic Association is another good starting point. You can search on the organization’s website for chiropractors near you and highlight those who specialize in your condition. Be sure to research the chiropractor’s credentials to ensure the individual has the proper training,
When you feel like you have received some good recommendations and found some qualified professionals, set up a time to interview each chiropractor before making an appointment. Many chiropractors request an initial consultation to learn more about you and how they can help. Use this time to ask questions about the chiropractor’s background, clinic, and techniques. You should feel comfortable having a conversation and you should leave with a better understanding of the treatment the chiropractor can provide. After an initial consultation, many chiropractors will put together a treatment plan based on your specific needs, including the number of sessions required. If you feel like the doctor didn’t listen or fully answer your questions, it might be wise to interview another professional. As you’re researching and interviewing chiropractors, be sure to investigate whether they offer additional treatments such as cryotherapy, interferential electrical muscle stimulation, acupuncture, or nutritional counseling. Each clinic is different, so find out what kind of treatments are available that could make your road to recovery a little smoother and possibly shorter. Whatever treatments are available, it’s crucial that you establish a strong rapport with your new chiropractor. You must be able to trust them and feel comfortable with their guidance, especially if you are seeking a long-term treatment plan. About 22 million Americans visit chiropractors each year, according to WebMD, seeking relief from sometimes chronic pain. The right chiropractor can restore your quality of life and become your partner in spine, joint, and muscle health. Use the guide above to choose an ideal chiropractor for your needs and get back to living your best life.

THE BEST TIME TO CHOOSE A PLUMBER IS WHEN YOU DON’T NEED ONE. Rather than waiting until you’re knee-deep in water or
have no water at all, take the time now to vet local plumbers and find the one you’ll call when your time of need arrives. Though the decision may seem common, it’s best not to take it lightly. There’s little that can destroy your house more quickly than uncontrolled water, whether it comes from a faucet, water heater, dishwasher, sink, or washing machine. Find the wrong one, and you’re putting yourself at needless risk of destructive damage to your home or even more costly repairs in the future.
When it comes to deciding who you’re going to ring up in your time of need, you can definitely start off by asking around at your church, business, or around the neighborhood. Check local newspapers, magazines, and business listings, too. Once you have a list of recommended plumbers, contact them or visit their websites to find out about their licensure. The state of Texas requires working plumbers to hold a license. Any plumber you consider should also be insured and bonded, to protect both you and the plumber, in case of an injury or accident. Ask each plumber how long they’ve been in business. A larger company will likely have plumbers with years of experience, but you should still ask. It’s a good sign if the company has been in business for several years, because it often indicates a proven track record of quality work.
Although pricing shouldn’t be your first concern, you want a plumber who’s able to offer an accurate estimate, barring unforeseen problems, on any job you may need done. It’s a good practice, when the time comes to hire someone, to obtain at least three estimates. Remember that several variables go into the price, including the time that it takes to complete the installation or repair, the difficulty of the repairs, the quality or number of the fixtures, or any unique specialization required, including camera work or other removal of fixtures. Be wary of any estimate that’s considerably lower than the others. It could mean the plumber is cutting corners or plans to use inferior parts. Ask potential plumbers how they guarantee their work. Do they guarantee workmanship as well as the parts they use, and for how long? Many warranties cover the plumber’s work for up to one year. If the plumber refuses to guarantee his or her work, move on. Ask any plumber you’re considering for references. If they’ve been in business for any length of time, this shouldn’t be a problem. Talking with past customers is one of the best ways to accurately gauge the quality of the plumber’s work and how well they back up the work they do. If they can’t or won’t provide references, consider looking elsewhere. And of course, you can investigate their ratings and reviews online. Plumbing is an old craft, but an important one. There’s nothing more annoying than low water pressure, contaminated water, leaky fixtures, or slow-draining tubs. Finding the right plumber can be the key to keeping you happy and keeping your home safe.

Try to do things upside down or backwards, like hanging a clock upside down so your brain needs to work a little to understand the time. Learn a foreign language or work on expanding your vocabulary. Solve math problems in your head without using pencil and paper. Learn to play a musical instrument or study music.
We’ve all stumbled when reaching for a stray thought— a song we heard the other day, what we had for dinner, where we set the keys... and perhaps with increasing frequency as we get older. But research seems to show that performing regular, targeted brain exercises can increase the brain’s cognitive reserve and lessen the effects of age on our squishy gray matter. Next time you find yourself trying to remember something, see if you can remember to do some of these brain-building exercises instead!
Engage in activities that involve many senses, such as cooking and gardening.
THE POWER OF PETS! •
The brain and health benefits of pet ownership are numerous.
Interacting with a cat or dog increases dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin production in the brain.
Pets are also a natural ice breaker when socializing.
Folks who own a pet generally get more exercise.
Interacting with a pet helps lower blood pressure and relieve stress.
Learn a new skill that involves fine-motor skills, such as knitting, drawing, or painting. Learn new cooking techniques and styles. After returning home from visiting a new place, try to draw a map of the area from memory. Visualize the spelling of a word in your head, then try to think of other words that begin (or end) with the same two letters. Try learning computer programming, which is a good way to improve your problem solving ability while also obtaining a marketable skill. Take up a new sport that utilizes the mind and body, such as golf or basketball. Write down ideas and stray thoughts. Go somewhere new or try something unfamiliar and write about it.
Pet owners are less likely to develop depression.
Smiling and laughing at your pet triggers healthy nerve transmitters in your brain.
Petting an animal has been linked to a release of oxytocin, a hormone related to anxiety relief.
The routine that comes with owning a pet provides structure and a sense of purpose.

focus on: EYE BAGS
HAVE IT WAYS TO PERK UP YOUR PEEPERS BY LA RU E G I LLESP I E
Puffy bags that have set up camp under your eyes can be caused by thinning of the skin, lost elasticity, fluid retention, and the effect of gravity on the fatty deposits around your eye sockets (these deposits are actually there to help protect your eyes). what to do: If it’s just some puffiness from a hangover or lack of sleep, then try a cooling under-eye mask or frozen green tea bags placed over the eyes for a few minutes. If it’s due to allergies, take something for allergies. Skin tightening treatments and creams can help, too, even Preparation H. But if it’s a chronic eye bag issue, a cosmetic procedure called blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) might be in order. During this procedure, a plastic surgeon can reposition the fat so it lays flatter. focus on: FINE LINES OR CROW’S FEET Wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes are caused by a breakdown in collagen and elasticity due to aging, sun damage, and smoking, as well as repeated facial movements and dehydration.
Have you found yourself in front of a mirror lately tugging at your eyebrows or temples to find your younger-looking self? Do you like the way you look but wish that you could say goodbye to issues that make you look angry, exhausted, and older than you actually feel? If you’ve been keeping an eye out for ways to take care of some of these things, you need look no further.
what to do: “The best way that someone can smooth the skin around their eyes is to prevent lines and wrinkles from forming in the first place,” says Joel Schlessinger, MD, FAAD, FAACS. He suggests proper sun protection, adequate hydration, and a great moisturizer every day. “The next best way is to treat [the wrinkles] once they have formed.” |
For starters, Retin-A can definitely help with fine lines and crow’s feet, says Robert Grant, MD, Plastic Surgeon-in-Chief at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He also suggests a temporary liquid silicone application to keep the skin taut for a few hours. Beyond skin-tightening, collagen-boosting topicals, you can opt for wrinkle-relaxing injectables such as Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin. In-office procedures that smooth and tighten the skin around the eyes include Pelleve Skin Tightening and Ultherapy, said Schlessinger. For deeper lines, fillers such as Restylane Silk and Restalyne Lyft provide good results, though Schlessinger notes you should take care in choosing the injector, as skill is what counts. focus on: DARK CIRCLES Common causes of dark circles under your eyes include thinning of the skin that allows blood vessels to show through, genetics (thanks), or hyper-pigmentation. what to do: Try using a concealer with a yellowish hue that is a couple shades lighter than your skin, mix it with a touch of loose powder, and gently tap it in under your eye using your ring finger. If it’s hyper-pigmentation, lasers such as IPL or topicals with bleaching agents can work to lighten the darker-colored pigment. If it’s genetic and you’re dealing with thin, sagging skin, injectables such as Restylane, Juvederm, and Voluma XC can help. Again, practice caution when choosing an injector for super-sensitive areas around the eyes.

thought a one night stay added to a Santa Fe vacation would be fine, but it wasn’t nearly enough. The Taos community has a one-of-a-kind laid back vibe along with a storied, proud history, multiple cultures living side by side, and a heritage of colorful people. The area also offers a rich array of activities for outdoor enthusiasts—and you’ll find some of the best skiing and snowboarding around in nearby Taos Ski Valley. Nestled among pristine peaks, the resort is nirvana for skiers who love their powder light and dry, and those who adore steep white-knuckle terrain.

Getting there from Santa Fe via the High Road to the Taos Scenic Byway is part of the adventure. Although the drive time is about two and a half hours, you’ll want to give yourself a little extra time to stop and absorb the interesting scenery, take pictures, and check out tiny villages with inventive restaurants sprinkled along the way. Visit the High Road to Taos part of the things to do section at NewMexico.org to plan your drive from Santa Fe to Taos.

TAOS, NEW MEXICO,

Once in town, you’ll be drawn to Taos Plaza. Serving as the heartbeat of the community, the plaza is a gathering place where people enjoy the culture and meet with friends. Traditional celebrations and live performances are plentiful in the square, and you’ll find art galleries, museums, specialty shops, and restaurants all located within a five-block walking area. We discovered—practically by accident after strolling around town and checking out the shops—that Taos has a lively music scene despite its small size (population around 5,000). In fact, it draws top notch artists from around the region. We were there during one of the town’s live music events. The atmosphere was casual and convivial. People brought chairs, blankets, and picnic baskets to enjoy while relaxing and listening to the music. We skipped a picnic lunch, still full after a hearty breakfast at La Cueva Café, a cozy, unassuming spot that is popular with the locals. Huevos rancheros smothered in

green or red chili (or Christmas style) don’t get more authentic—or more delicious—than this. And the omelet Mexicano made with homemade chorizo was to die for. The total bill, including a couple of cups of coffee, was only around $20. Later that evening we mapped out our activities for the next three days while lounging by the wood-burning kiva fireplace in our adobe-style hotel room. Although the weather in June was in the low 80s during the day, it dropped down to the 40s at night, ideal for a cozy, crackling fire. Bright and early the next morning we set out to explore the great outdoors. Geographically, Taos, which is surrounded by the Carson National Forest, combines the high desert southwest with the resplendent Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The area boasts two wild and scenic rivers, the Rio Grande and the Rio Chama, and three developed recreation areas. We decided to hike along the moderate 4.9 mile Devisadero Peak Trail and were wowed by sweeping views of the valley below. After an active day we cleaned up and dined at family-owned Antonio’s The Taste of Mexico. The restaurant was tiny, but the menu and portions were not, and its five-star reviews are well-deserved. We especially enjoyed the steak street tacos and the guacamole prepared tableside. We spent much of our third day at Taos Pueblo, the only living Native American community designated both a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a National Historic Landmark. The multi-storied adobe buildings have been continuously inhabited for over 1,000 years. Not only is the Pueblo fascinating from a historical perspective, there’s a beauty and serenity that sets the place aside as something special. Our guided tour was interesting and informative, and left us in awe of the lifestyle and history of the Pueblo.
On our final full day in Taos we decided to try llama trekking with Wild Earth Llama Adventures. A family with three kids we met at our hotel highly recommended the “Take a Llama to Lunch” wilderness day hike, which accommodates people of all ages and fitness levels. It was as much fun as they described, and one of the highlights of our vacation. After an inspiring hike at a reasonable pace, our guides prepared a gourmet lunch. The ingredients were packed in by the llamas which are all rescues, and we learned their stories, their personalities, and how to interact with these fun, gentle animals. After the trek I relaxed with a deeply soothing therapeutic massage at Taos Sage Waters Spa. Llama trekking followed by a massage with some foot reflexology thrown in made for a perfect last day in Taos. So, with four days set aside to explore and experience Taos, was it enough this time? Surprisingly, it wasn’t. We didn’t get a chance to go horseback riding, to fly fish, to soar above the valley in a hot air balloon, or to take a hands-on cooking class at Cooking Studio Taos. And it wasn’t even ski season. Next time, Taos, next time.

Fellowship Academy is building on our already strong foundation as we upgrade the school’s programs in technology, writing, leadership, fine arts, and community service. “I really love our school –our families, our kids, and our faculty and staff,” says Dr. Marilyn Dardenne, Fellowship’s new Head of School. “We have a lot of fun at Fellowship; we work hard academically and we prioritize maintaining a strong sense of community. Together with our parents, we celebrate the accomplishments of our children. We enjoy the small day-to-day pleasures of educating and raising them in the way they should go, and we face challenges together. One of our strongest assets is our people – our faculty, staff, and coaches are dedicated role models and mentors for our students. 1 cup whole milk ½ teaspoon garlic powder ½ teaspoon fine salt, plus more for seasoning 6 (1 ounce) slices sharp cheddar cheese 6 English muffins
directions: When it comes to starting the New Year off on the right foot, you have to focus on the first meal of each day. Whether you prefer a grab-and-go smoothie, a big bowl of warm overnight oats, or a handheld egg sandwich, we’ve got some ideas that’ll keep you fueled and focused all morning long.
Preheat oven to 375˚F and spray a 9”x13” baking pan with cooking spray. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat, then add onion, season with salt and pepper, and cook until the onion is softened, about 4 minutes. Stir in sausage and cook until the meat is no longer pink, breaking up the sausage into small pieces as it cooks. Once the sausage is cooked, stir in spinach and tomatoes, cooking until the liquid has
evaporated, about 4 minutes. Remove sausage mixture from heat and spread in an even layer on the bottom of the greased pan. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, garlic powder, and salt. Once combined, pour the eggs over the sausage mixture in the pan, then bake until the eggs are puffed and edges are golden brown, about 25 to 30 minutes. Cool completely in the pan. While the eggs are cooling, toast the English muffins. Once the frittata mixture is cool, gently lift the sheet out of the pan onto a cutting board. Using a biscuit cutter, cut 6 rounds of eggs that are about the size of the English muffins. Layer the bottom halves of the English muffins with one round of frittata each. Top each with a slice of cheese and finish by adding the muffin tops. Wrap each sandwich in aluminum foil. Add sandwiches to a freezer bag or airtight container. Freeze for up to 1 month. To reheat, unwrap the sandwich and microwave on a microwavable plate. Microwave for 1 to 1½ minutes until the frittata is warmed through and cheese is melted.
