Awesome Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) Expands to Five Chapters in VA, DC, and MD In October, Awesome Women Entrepreneurs (AWE), a DC-area networking group for women business owners, announced the launch of four new chapters in Fairfax, Vienna-Tysons, Washington, DC, and Bethesda-Chevy Chase. Open to women who own and operate their own businesses, either full- or part-time, the inaugural meetings for each chapter took place through the end of October to introduce AWE to potential members and inform them of the benefits of belonging to and participating in an established hyper-local networking organization that supports their business success. “We want AWE to become the tool that helps women entrepreneurs create, collaborate and grow businesses for long-term success,” says AWE Founder Karen Bate of Arlington, whose own company, KB Concepts P.R., is more than 10 years old. The brainchild of Bate and fellow entrepreneur Evelyn Powers, 20-year owner of Design Powers, Inc., AWE's original Arlington chapter now has more than 135 active members. Bate and Powers co-host the weekly AWE Show on WERA 96.7FM along with a companion podcast, interviewing successful women business owners and community leaders. The two were also recently featured on WUSA9 TV’s Great Day Washington about AWE’s burgeoning growth. “One of the reasons AWE has been so successful is that we purposely keep the chapters small and local, and limit the number of members within professional categories, which allows for greater business development opportunities,” notes Bate.

Arlington County Board Unanimously Approves Lease for New Phoenix Bikes Location The Arlington County Board recently approved a lease with homegrown nonprofit Phoenix Bikes for vacant retail space along Columbia Pike in the Arlington Mill Community & Senior Center. The Board authorized the five year lease with an initial annual rent of $8,928. The nonprofit will pay an estimated $170,000 for build-out. “This is a great location for Phoenix Bikes Bi ke S u m m i t and a great way for the County to fill vacant retail space at Arlington Mill,” said Arlington County Board Chair Jay Fisette. “Phoenix Bikes’ award-winning program of mentoring youth through bicycle repairs and sales will thrive in this high-visibility location on the west end of the Pike. We’re happy to have them.” Phoenix Bikes Executive Director Meg Rapelye, who serves as a co-chair of the Arlington Chamber's Community Action Committee, welcomed the Board’s action. “We are so grateful for Phoenix Bikes’ new home at Arlington Mill Community Center,” she said. “This move is the most significant event in Phoenix Bikes’ 10 years of existence and will dramatically increase our organization’s capacity to serve the community. We look forward to augmenting the afterschool and summer teen programming the Center currently provides and helping activate Columbia Pike’s West End.” MVIX
Kings Dominion Welcomes Guests With Mvix Digital Signage Kings Dominion, Virginia's premier amusement park, recently updated its Picnic Pavilion with digital signage powered by Mvix. Looking to update its aging reader boards, Kings Dominion wanted a visual communication solution that could display dynamic content, was easy to update, and could be remotely managed from the central office. The outdoor signage system also had to be weather resistant and readable in direct sunlight. The Chamber goes on to explain the proposed reduction in parking minimums furthers County goals for transportation and transit, and these changes should not be paired with excessive requirements in order to achieve reductions. Businesses should not have to absorb additional costs to advance other County goals while working to achieve this County priority. On October 20, Chamber sent a letter to Arlington County Board Chair Jay Fisette to express support for the Residential Parking Working Group's draft report and recommendations and urge the County to protect businesses from any additional costly burdens. In the letter, the Chamber shares its position that developers should have the ability to park their properties at the rate the market dictates, noting that by reducing minimums, developers will be able to make decisions about their buildings' parking levels based on market needs for their property, rather than fulfilling regulatory requirements.

The Arlington Chamber of Commerce’s brand-new Cards & Clubs networking event was a huge success, with a sold-out crowd of more than 100 Chamber members and business professionals from across the area. Making the Most of Your Website as a Marketing Tool A website can sit on a shelf gathering dust like a brochure, or it can serve your business as an effective marketing tool. Many small businesses do not take advantage of the numerous opportunities a website presents for generating leads, converting customers and gathering market research. During our September Small Business Roundtable, Tara Claeys of Design TLC discussed strategies for maximizing the impact of a website and how to take your website to the next level. Many small businesses do not take advantage of the opportunities a website presents for generating leads, converting customers, and gathering market research. Here are some steps for creating a website that works as an effective promotional tool to help your business accomplish its goals: • • • • • • •
Set a marketing budget: Direct mail is a tool of the past, whereas your website can be designed to keep someone’s attention. Prioritize Google and SEO: Using algorithms that make your website rise to the top of a list of search results should always be your goal. Keep your domain name short and simple. Consider creating your website through Squarespace or WordPress, as this allows you to easily update content. Keep the performance speed of your website high through your hosting. Adding large images to your site can slow it down. Make sure your website is mobile-friendly, as Google will not pick it up if it is not. Your website will need to be secure and SSL friendly. Google is making that a requirement in 2018.
Always remember that your website is not about you. Make sure that your design contains your branding, logo, colors, and quality photos and that it is consistent. For the ease and benefit of the user, your website should have speed, messaging, easy navigation, and be mobile-friendly. You always want lead generation and conversions, so make sure there is a call to action or an offer, an interactive component like a quiz, poll, or social media listing. Be sure to keep track of your online engagement with your audience through by using Google Analytics or a similar tool.

Arlington Economic Development (AED) has been honored with three separate Excellence in Economic Development Awards by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). The awards were presented at a ceremony during the September IEDC Annual Conference in Toronto. “On behalf of the IEDC board of directors and Excellence in Economic Development Awards Advisory Committee, congratulations to Arlington Economic Development. Not only did they work to provide a necessary service to their community; but also, their participation in the awards program sheds light on their stellar projects which other communities can now use as a benchmark,” said Michael Langley, 2017 IEDC Board Chair.

AED took Gold in the Special Project Website category for its “dciscalling.com,” a special recruitment oriented website. AED created dciscalling.com as an attraction and retention tool for Nestlé USA to move its headquarters from Glendale, California to Arlington, Virginia. “DC is Calling” was created as a resource for Nestlé USA employees to learn about the Washington, D.C. area as the company considered relocating across the country. AED was also honored with a Gold Award in the Special Purpose Print Promotion category for Startup Arlington, a collaborative initiative between Arlington and members of the business community designed to attract, educate and market to entrepreneurs outside of the Washington, D.C. region about the benefits of operating their business in Arlington. Startup Arlington provided one growing tech company the opportunity to experience the benefits of working and living in Arlington for three months, free of charge. The winning company’s work space, living space, and other amenities were provided by Arlington and its business partners. The 2017 competition received 129 applications from nine states and three countries. AED also partnered with Kiddar Capital to provide $25,000 in investment capital to the winner of Startup Arlington, which was GreenSight Agronomics, a big data company from Boston, Massachusetts. Finally, AED earned a Bronze Award in Regionalism and Cross-Border Collaboration for its Dongsheng – U.S. Entrepreneurship Competition. For the last two years, AED has served as the U.S. host site partner for the global Dongsheng Entrepreneurship Competition, which helps to foster entrepreneurial relations between the U.S. and China.
