Sweet Caroline, Good times never seemed so good, I've been inclined, To believe they never would, But now I... ” (Neil Diamond)

We’ve been inclined, understandably, to resign ourselves to the “fact” that England would never again win a football championship. Many were too nervous to watch the Wembley final on the last day of July 2022. I struggled, but, it was so worth it. Commentators said that the team succeeded because they kept on working together, kept on believing, to work and work for what they knew was possible. This way of thinking shows the power of having faith in your team mates. Jesus Christ taught his disciples about having faith “as small as a mustard seed’ , and that faith can “move mountains” . In church we have to keep reminding ourselves to have faith in Jesus and in each other. Other volunteer organisations similarly have to hang on to the belief that what they are doing is going to help, and that they will be able to achieve their objectives together. In Church, we believe that God’s times are coming and are already here through acts of kindness, justice, inclusivity and welcome, but when things go wrong, or all our daily news is unresolved crisis after unresolved crisis, we can, like Neil Diamond, be “inclined to believe they never would” . So, when that long awaited victory came on 31-7-22, in a way that many did not foresee, through the magnificent women of English football, it gave us a better outlook for the future for other acts of belief and commitment and teamwork. Whether you are in church or another group that is trying to do something good in these challenging days, keep the faith and let those memories of July 31st 2022 inspire you!

The Well resumes in September (see the advert on page 7) and hopes to meet every Friday afternoon between 2-4pm at Arlesey Methodist Chapel and welcomes everyone. I know that the team include creative elements for you to look at or try out. Why not go along and enjoy some free refreshments and a friendly atmosphere?
