Dear Editor,

I am replying to a comment in the Arlesey News Magazine September 2021 about Dog fouling from Iain Black.

I am a dog walker and I always let my dog use the grass, it is then picked up in a poo bag which I put under him as he does it, if I am not quick enough, it is still picked up. I would not use the gutter for fear of getting us both run over with the speed of the traffic down there.

It is also bad enough when the kids ride their bikes on the paths when going to School, as hardly any of them have bells on their bikes. They should be on the road!

Everyone is welcome

Last month we opened our doors and designed a new bar for everyone to enjoy.

We have revamped our main bar with new furniture, more tv screens and made the bar service area completely open plan to make it modern and spacious. If you haven’t already been down to visit, come along and enjoy a drink in our family welcoming atmosphere. Everything you remember about the club….forget it..this is a new era!

Interview with David Kitson - Arlesey Town Football Club Chairman

Two months ago former Premier League footballer Dave Kitson returned to the club where he started his career, this time as the new Chairman of Arlesey Town F.C.

‘It has been a very busy two months’ says Kitson, speaking from his home in Reading. ‘We were fortunate to sell a piece of land at the front of the club and the committee wanted a safe pair of hands to ensure that the proceeds were spent as effectively as possible’. That piece of land will, in time, accommodate seven new bungalows, but it is the redevelopment of the club itself that is really getting the fans excited.

‘It really will be a state of the art facility, unlike anything in the surrounding area, a premier match day Chairman Dave Kitson experience for the entire family’, says Kitson, who rattles off a number of changes the club is making to its main bar. There will be four brand new 8k TV’s, one of which, a giant 85” plasma, will show every live football match screened by Sky and BT Sport this season in surround sound. The bar itself is unrecognisable, gone is the outdated mahogany, and in its place a white granite bar top with new rainbow taps serving ten different beers in front of a newly painted brick wall lit up with blue LED lights.

Every single piece of furniture has been replaced with brand new tables and seating, and there is now a ‘cosy area’ with sofas and coffee tables where families can relax with magazines, papers and board games. ‘It is essential that we appeal to every single person in our community,’ says Kitson, ‘after all, this is their football club, it belongs to the community.’ Kitson is at pains to point out that both he and the committee just happen to be the people looking after the club, but it has no owner as such, no benefactor. Every committee member, including Kitson, is a volunteer.

‘This year the club is celebrating its 130th anniversary, an incredible achievement in itself, but we must make sure that we take the correct decisions today to ensure that we are here in another 130 years.’ And Kitson has a trick up his sleeve to ensure that happens.

‘Free half season tickets,’ says Kitson, who started his career with the blues as a fresh faced 19 year old before being sold to Cambridge United in 2001. ‘We are working as hard as we possibly can to deliver an incredible space that the whole community can enjoy, but we are aware that some preconceptions may still exist as to what people expect a local football club to look like on the inside. That is why I have sanctioned the printing and distribution of 2,700 free half season tickets, one for every household in Arlesey.’ * It’s a bold move, but it’s also a clever way of enticing families that would perhaps otherwise look elsewhere for their entertainment. ‘I have to get people in to see the new bar and experience what we stand for, I am convinced that if people from the community come here just once, it will change their whole perspective, and they will begin to come here regularly. We are an all-inclusive, family friendly community football club, everybody is welcome.’

The free half season ticket means that every household in Arlesey will be able to watch Arlesey Town league games for free up until 26th December.

With the competition for football spectators fiercer than ever, Kitson knew he had to do something different for the club to prosper. 'We have a finite amount of people that we can market ourselves to. We are not Manchester United, we don’t have an entire globe full of potential fans to aim for. There are 2,700 homes in Arlesey as it stands today, that’s it, it is absolutely vital that we try to engage with every single one of them while getting the message across that this is their club, their local football team. Mental Health Matters with Jo Loach Uncertainty.

There has been much uncertainty surrounding this pandemic and we still know exactly how things will unravel as we move forwards.

As humans, we don’t tend to manage uncertainty well. We like to know what is going on, what we can expect moving forwards and to have a sense of control. The pandemic tends to scupper these which may evoke stress, anxiety and low mood. What we can do to proactively look after our mental and emotional health in the face of ongoing uncertainty is to sustain good self care habits. We often know what we need but don’t always do it. For example, maintaining good sleep routines, a healthy diet, drinking water, having times of rest as well as engaging in enjoyable/creative/playful pursuits, talking to friends, exercising and spending time in nature.

However, no matter how much we attempt to be preventative with our health, sometimes, too much goes on for too long resulting in a diminished ability for daily functioning.

If this presents via prolonged or extreme anxiety, depression, sleeping issues, withdrawal from support or activity, emotional outbursts, obsessive thinking or an increase in destructive behaviours, it may be time to seek help. If so, the GP is always the first port of call. Whilst there are national shortages right now, it is important to persevere. If the waiting times for available resources are too long, going private is not the only option.

If you are able to do so, you can find suitably verified counsellors at https://www.counselling-directory.org.uk.

If not, a Google search will bring up the details of local counselling agencies. These are challenging times for our mental and emotional health so developing awareness of our response to uncertainty can help us to recognise what is helpful or otherwise and to seek help when needed.

Community Events

We are delighted to be able to hold our first event since COVID began so please get the date in your diary!

On Saturday November 27th we will be holding a Christmas Fair and turning on the Arlesey Christmas lights. The Christmas Fair will be in the Village Hall from 3pm to 6pm. We are really looking forward to welcoming back some of our regulars, including Arlesey Scouts and Tillie's teashop. If you would be interested in having a stall please get in touch.

We will also be organising the Arlesey Advent windows again this year, running from Dec 1st - 24th with a new window being revealed each evening. If you would like to do a window please get in touch with your preferred date and a name for your window. The theme this year is "A Christmas Scene". We'd also like to invite residents to decorate their front doors with a festive wreath during December - let's see how pretty we can make Arlesey for the Christmas season! Looking a little further ahead, we have already started planning events for 2022. The first will be our Party in the Park for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations. This will be on The 2020 Christmas tree in Arlesey the recreation ground on Saturday 4th June. We'd also like to run the Scarecrow Festival in the week running up to this date. The theme will be "A right Royal occasion". We're giving you plenty of notice to plan your entries!

We would also like to reinstate the Arlesey Summer Fete, and have this pencilled in for Saturday September 3rd. This is the biggest event in Arlesey and is an opportunity for the whole community to come together and enjoy themselves with stalls, rides, entertainment, food and drink and often some sunshine. The fete takes a huge amount of work, both in the planning stages and practically on the day.

Currently there are only 6 of us on the committee and in order for us to run the event next year we really need extra support to make the event possible. Please can we ask you to consider whether you are able to offer to help ?

The Brownies are back after the summer break and have welcomed some new friends.

This term we have visited Buzzworks to learn all about how we can help bees, we are building our Girlguiding skills by practicing first aid and will be getting sparkly for Guy Fawkes and Christmas!

Recipe of the Month- Sweet & Sour Pork Brought to you by Slimming World, Arlesey.

Serves 4 1 syn per serving. Ready in 40 minutes and suitable for Freezing

Ingredients Low calorie cooking spray 500g lean pork fillet, visible fat removed, cut into chunks 1 large onion, cut into chunks 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 2 carrots, peeled and cut into matchsticks 50g fresh bean sprouts, rinsed 200g sugar snap peas 150 prepared fresh pineapple, cut into chunks For the sauce 200ml boiling chicken stock 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 level tbsp cornflour 1 tbsp tomato puree 2 tbsp white wine vinegar 4 tbsp dark soy sauce Spray a non-stick wok or large frying pan with low calorie cooking spray and place over a high heat. Add the pork and stir-fry for 5-6 minutes or until lightly browned. Transfer the pork to a bowl with a slotted spoon, cover and keep warm. Put all the ingredients into the pan and stir-fry for 4-5 minutes. Return the pork to the pan and stir-fry for 5-6 minutes or until the meat is cooked. Mix all the sauce ingredients in a small bowl. Stir the sauce and the pineapple into the pork and vegetables and cook for 3-4 minutes. Serve hot with fragrant/jasmine rice-garnished with shredded spring onions.

Family announcements Michael Stone - Thankyou,

Sadly and unexpectedly Michael passed away in July and his funeral was in August. As a family we would like to thank everyone that has sent cards, flowers, gifts and kind messages. Our neighbours have been so understanding and supportive and we are really grateful for the time and space you have given us.

We were totally overwhelmed by the number of people that came to the crematorium to pay their last respects to Michael and apologise to those who were unable to be inside. We would especially like to thank Michael's football "lads" and work colleagues who celebrated Michael's love of Gillingham F.C .They wore ties and shirts bought especially for the day. Football was Michaels passion, and his friends and team mates from Stotfold Lions have been great. We would also like to acknowledge that many friends and relatives couldn't be there but watched the video link.

Michael was a happy , loving young man and his life was just starting for him. He had just moved into his own home with his partner Lisa and lovely son Benjamin (2years). Michael will be missed by us all, but especially Lisa, Benjamin, his sisters Laura and Helen and of course us, his Mum and Dad. Thankyou all again, Janet and David

Pix Brook Academy

Welcome to our October news...

The start of term is an amazing time to be in school. I have just taken a moment to look back over my thoughts at this time in the previous two years. On both occasions I was talking about the new building and challenges associated with opening a new school. We now start our third year; the school has grown from less that 60 pupils to over 400 and this September we welcomed over 180 pupils into Y5. The school is “alive” and full of energy and enthusiasm.

It is also a new year where we are all hoping that the pandemic is starting to recede in terms of its impact. These last two years have been disrupted beyond all imagination and to have navigated this period while staring a new school has on occasion presented some challenges.

We have been fortunate at Pix Brook to have had the full support of our community and children who have shown themselves to be resilient and flexible. I must also mention the staff team at the school who have responded to every challenge stoically.

This year is exciting! Already we have put together our extra-curricular programme, the range of sports making use of our superb facilities will really enhance the pupil experience. Staff have also offered their time after school to teach public speaking, drama, German, chess, choir, and a range of other opportunities. Being able to attend these clubs is something that pupils have really missed and it is fantastic that they can now be back on.

Perhaps the most gratifying element to working in a school is seeing the relationship between the members of the school develop. We now have our first group of secondary age pupils in school. These young people are already very different from the new Y5’s they were when they joined in 2019.

We now have a common experience and their ever-increasing maturity makes for the most interesting and surprising conversations.

Young people are full of life and thoughts and as we work together it is amazing to see them grow. This is something I know all of us at PBA are looking forward to seeing.

Etonbury Academy

We hope you have all had a healthy and well deserved Summer break.

It’s great to have the children back in school, welcome our new Year 5s into ETA Juniors, Year 7s into the Secondary School, and a number of new students across the upper years.

Over the Summer further improvements have been made on the site with refurbished toilets, more water fountains, new changing rooms and painting all around.

Supported by our parents and staff, we were delighted to be able to get the majority of our students covid tested in school prior to them starting back on their first day. We are enormously grateful for this support which enabled all our children to go straight to their new Form group, meet their Form Tutor and fellow Tutees, giving them the best, and most normal, start to their school year.

Our Year 7s have made a brilliant start to the Secondary School, many of whom had attended the Summer School during August. During the Summer School they had opportunities to explore the main school and navigate themselves to areas and subjects without the challenge of getting to lessons on time! They cooked, explored sciences, played games and wore constant smiles throughout their week. Many thanks to Mr Baga, Assistant Principal, who gave up his holiday to give them this great start.

The Year 5 children are settling in well to ETA Juniors, enjoying the facilities and open spaces. They are particularly enjoying their roast dinners, homemade curries and of course the fish and chip Fridays. Many have been excited to join in conversations with our catering contractor’s in-house Chef to help develop the menu even further. It’s really exciting to also see so many signing up to the residential adventure trip going out this term.

We have a new puppy (Labrador called Simmy) We have had him for four weeks but he seems unable to settle at night time. We have followed the advice given to us by the breeder however he still seems to need us constantly - do you have any advice for us or can you tell us how long we can expect this to go on for?

Hi, thank you for your question; I'm sure it is one that resonates with lots of us who have had or had puppies.

I remember my first puppy being like this, and it felt like it would never end, but rest assured that this period does pass!

Firstly, I would recommend that Simmy has his own safe place to go to, both in the day and at night times.

This is a spot where he is left alone by family members and other animals if you have any. It needs to be inviting and comfy. A soft familiar blanket and a cuddly toy will all help. This area could be a crate, or a hidey hole under the stairs. If this isn't possible then provide a lovely bed with the toys in and make sure it's left in the same place.

Simmy should be given treats when he goes to this place and he shouldn't be put there as a punishment.

The next thing to do is practice leaving Simmy in his safe place for a few minutes at a time. Encourage him in with treats, then when he is settled, provide him with a chew, snuffle mat or a frozen Kong, and let him lick at it. When he's distracted walk away. DO NOT make a fuss of him before walking away, this only makes the separation worse! Gradually lengthen the amount of time that you spend away, from a few minutes to an hour, and reward Simmy when you come back if he is settled. However if he is jumping and whining only pet him when he has calmed, so you are reinforcing the positive behaviour.

If you do all this in the day, its essentially the same process at night. In the time before bedtime he needs to learn to settle, and remmebr do not make a big thing of leaving! So maybe a treat, into bed, cuddles, then sit in same room whilst Simmi is in his cage, then when setled walk away.

Anxiety, Weight Release, If Simmi barks in the night some people would recommend leaving him, but very young Depression, Fears & Phobias, dogs do need to go out to the toilet at 2-3am. If this is the case go to him, allow him to Smoking Cessation, Hypnobirthing do his business, then follow the same calm routine before going back to bed. If he Hypno-Gastric Band Therapy..... whines once you put him back then you do need to leave him as this is then barking for attention. I would also recommend buying an appeasing pheremone collar or plug-in for Make positive changes to your life in the Simmi. Planning news Planning News Update..

Central Beds Local Plan Approved. The Local Plan has finally completed all the stages of consultation and been approved by the Government Inspectors, and formally adopted by Central Beds Council. In the end if seemed like the Inspectors had no interest in logical arguments or debate – no doubt under pressure from government to just get it through. There is still a long way to go before anything actually happens with the extension to the East of Arlesey development, so let’s hope that the original Country Park concept can be salvaged. There is also an opportunity for a degree of rationalization of the amenities to be provided by the Arlesey Cross development and the Local Plan extension.

Planning Appeal – Land West of High Street. The current Arlesey Masterplan Arlesey Cross Phase 1 plan includes several sites between the High Street and the railway, which are privately owned. Eventually it is hoped these would all be linked by a new access road, but those that can be accessed directly from the High Street are already being submitted. One of these sites is roughly opposite the WI Hall, where two houses are marked for demolition to create a new access road. Planning application CBC/20/02789 for 115 houses was refused by Central Beds, but has now been submitted as an appeal to the Secretary of State. The relevant documents can be found under the original planning application reference, in a separate “Legal” folder. The impact of construction traffic trying to negotiate the congested town centre would of course be a nightmare, but is impossible to demonstrate this on paper, and can only be understood by observing the current situation.

This issue will also be relevant to the Local Plan “Arlesey east extension”, as the site promoters have already stated their intention to build the first few Phases using the High Street/Hitchin Road for access “as it has spare capacity”.

Arlesey Cross – Phase 1 Development. There are indications that Telereal Trilium are preparing to submit an application for the first Phase of the Arlesey Cross (East) development (approx. 160 dwellings). This part of the site would be accessed from a new road off Stotfold Road, just before the 30 mph limit starts, and is therefore not dependent on the “Relief Road” which will ultimately connect the site.

It is likely that such an application would be approved (if it is consistent with the outline plans already approved CBC/17/01158). Stotfold’s event of the year…..

We are all now eagerly anticipating the Working Steam Weekend at Stotfold Mill on 9th/10th October which promises to be one of Bedfordshire’s major attractions for this year. With so many annual events cancelled we are very pleased that we are able to offer this great family day out whilst ensuring that anti-covid measures are in place to safeguard our visitors.

Amongst the attractions, the key features will be many steam traction engines of varying sizes from the Saunders collection and enthusiasts from further afield. The display of static engines will include some driving a circular saw large enough to cut whole tree trunks into planks, stone crushers and other forms of powered machinery.

Most unusual is the opportunity to tour the lanes around the area in a steam driven bus. A probable highlight will be the steam engine driven threshing machine extracting grain from sheaves of the heritage wheat crop that has been grown on the field and harvested by the cutting and binding methods of a bygone era. Further displays of farming methods from earlier years will be demonstrations of ploughing by both steam engines and vintage tractors.

The Mill, of course, will be open providing the opportunity to see milling of grain in action to produce our fine award-winning stoneground flour, which will be available to purchase along with the ever-popular porridge oats.

For those enthusiastic to get ahead with their Christmas shopping, the craft tent has extended the number and variety of stalls so there should be plenty of opportunity to buy some unusual and attractive presents. Remember that the press is already suggesting that we could be facing shortages in many supply areas before the festive season! To ensure everyone can enjoy a whole day out at the event there children can enjoy fairground rides and there is full provision of food outlets as well as the bar marquee offering draft ales and ciders.

Advanced tickets for the Working Steam Weekend can be purchased with a 20% discount from our website www.stotfold.com.

The weekend is preceded on Friday by Live at the Mill. Starting at 7.00pm this an evening of live music for rock and pop fans in the beer marquee, featuring the popular groups allergy and Delorean.

There has been heavy demand for tickets but they might still be available on our website.

Our final children's event for the year is Halloween Spooktacular in the Nature Reserve 3:00 - 5:00. Sunday 31st October. See our website.

If you do not manage to join us over the weekend, remember that your last chance to stock up on flour and our winter warming porridge oats will be when we open on Sunday 24th October from 12.30 until 5.00pm.
