Capital Credit Refunds The Board of Directors of Arkansas Valley Electric Cooperative recently authorized the retirement and distribution of $3,076,928.12 in Capital Credit refunds to Cooperative members. These Capital Credit refunds represent portions of the patronage capital from 1997 and 2003. Cooperative members who received electric service during the calendar years of 1997 and 2003 are eligible to receive a Capital Credit refund. If the amount of the Capital Credit refund is less than $25.00, checks will not be sent out to inactive accounts and the amount will be paid at a later time. Active members whose patronage refund is less than $25.00 will receive a credit on their bill. Capital Credits represent the annual margins (profits) which were assigned to members who bought electricity from the Cooperative. Each member’s share of these margins is based on the amount of patronage derived from their consumption of electricity during that year. The Board of Directors of the Cooperative evaluates the financial condition of the Cooperative each year and analyzes the amount of required equity and liquidity needed prior to refunding Capital Credits. Capital is retained by the Cooperative rather than refunded immediately after the year in which the margins were earned. These reserves are used as working capital to build, upgrade and maintain the electric distribution system, and allow for emergency repairs following storms. These reserves reduce the need to borrow additional capital to fund future expenditures on the electric plant. There are many former members who are eligible to receive Capital Credit refunds from prior years but due to incorrect forwarding addresses these members may not receive refunds. The Cooperative urges everyone who discontinues electric service to leave a forwarding address so their future Capital Credits can be mailed at the appropriate time. If you or someone in your family knows of former Cooperative members who were receiving electricity in 1997 or 2003 but may not have received a check, please ask them to contact the Cooperative by calling 1-800-468-2176 and ask to speak to Capital Credits or by e-mail at cbowman@avecc.com.
