On November 18, 1921, the first issue of the Aggie Herald rolled off the presses. The school which opened as the First District Agricultural School, one of four authorized in 1909, had Victor Cicero Kays as its head. But federally funded vocational education programs made these high schools obsolete. The First District reinvented itself as a junior college well before the state legislature in 1925 recognized it as The First District Agricultural and Mechanical College. Next in 1933 the legislature confirmed what the school already had been calling itself: Arkansas State College. Yet another transformation came in 1967: Arkansas State University. The first campus newspaper appeared at St. John’s College in Little Rock in 1871. This Masonic institution, founded before the Civil War, was the site for the execution of former student and Confederate spy David O. Dodd. The Land-Grant institution of higher education, first named Arkansas Industrial University, opened in 1872, becoming the University of Arkansas in 1899.
