The Sue Walk Burnett Student Media Center is the perfect example of what the University of Arkansas strives to accomplish. I have spent my entire college career within the student media center: first as a reporter for The Arkansas Traveler, then as a news and lifestyles editor, and now as the editor-in-chief of Hill Magazine. Aside from those roles, I have had the pleasure of working alongside broadcast journalists, advertising agents and disc jockeys, all of whom are competent and capable in their fields.

The mission statement of the U of A is to “build a better world by providing transformational opportunities and skills, promoting an inclusive and diverse culture, nurturing creativity and solving problems through research and discovery, all in service to Arkansas.” I would argue student media brings out those qualities in its students better than anything else could.

Because each of the outlets works in a professional capacity, the students involved are called to a higher level of understanding of their craft and are far better prepared for the demands of the very competitive job market awaiting.

I started in student media as an anxious freshman who had to psych herself up for an hour before interviewing a graduate student. A year later, and I was chasing a political candidate down Dickson Street, trying to catch up to a parade for an interview.

The demand for excellence from the student media center brought out my capacity for excellence and encouraged me to have confidence in my capabilities.

Confidence became a requirement. I had to have it or I would fail.

Thanks to the opportunities provided by the student media center, I have met some of the most interesting people and expanded my understanding of what diversity really means. I have had to be creative with every unique problem that came up, and I definitely have had to do a lot of research.

Even though working tirelessly has been one of the hardest experiences of my life, I would not trade it for anything. This has been one of the greatest transformative experiences of my life. I only hope that it can continue to be as great for the students who follow in my footsteps.

Designs to Inspire Community Design Center Garners Awards

The winning project — the Greers Ferry Water Garden in Arkansas — is a conceptual design created by the U of A Community Design Center in collaboration with Marlon Black Architects and the Ecological Design Group. It is next to the Greers Ferry Dam at Heber Springs.

These are the 11th and 12th Community Design Center projects to receive American Architecture Awards.

The center is an outreach program of Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design.

“We are pleased that these combined landscape and architectural complexes — both for the state of Arkansas — are receiving recognition,” said Steve Luoni, director of the Community Design Center. “They serve important public interests for the state.”

Luoni is also a Distinguished Professor

and the Steven L. Anderson Chair in Architecture and Urban Studies in the Fay Jones School. Blackwell is a Distinguished Professor and the E. Fay Jones Chair in Architecture in the school.

Greers Ferry Water Garden at Greers Ferry Dam in Heber Springs updates and completes a plan conceived in the 1960s

by Edward Durell Stone, a native of Arkansas and an internationally renowned mid-century architect.

Present-day designers updated Stone’s ornamental landscape to support a natural fish hatchery, wetlands, edible landscapes, an improved riparian system, irrigated vertical gardens, wet meadows and a pond ecosystem to showcase niche plant communities and wildlife.

Water from the dam is circulated throughout the site in micro-loops, enhancing nutrient exchange, metabolic cycles and life in this whole-system watershed approach.

“We refreshed Stone’s design with greater emphasis on ecological considerations, including a place-based expression of the Ozark landscape toward a more contemporary visitor-centered approach,” Luoni said.

The garden combines botanical features with facilities for both the performing arts and installation sites for large-scale public art.

This design has received numerous design awards since its completion in 2017. The project received funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the state of Arkansas and the Entergy Foundation.

Honors Collaboration Bringing Solace to Cancer Patients

Patients facing a tough diagnosis at Fort Worth’s Moncrief Cancer Institute are being comforted by imaginative paper sculptures exploring themes of rebirth, memory, pain and hope.

“Efflorescence,” curated by Alexis Meldrum, B.A.’17, and featuring the work of Emily Chase, B.F.A.’13, grew out of a chance encounter at Living Arts of Tulsa, where Honors College staff, along with Meldrum, attended a gallery opening of Chase’s work.

Meldrum studied art history at the U of A and minored in marketing. She was immediately drawn to Chase’s intricately carved paper scenes and garments and, when Meldrum was chosen as guest curator for the Moncrief gallery, Chase was the first artist who came to mind. “Her work is just so uplifting and exciting to visit again and again,” Meldrum explained. Perfect for a space where many patients and visitors return again and again for tests and treatments.

“Efflorescence” is a remarkable collection of 19 artworks, ranging from cut paper scenes and lightboxes to paper clothing, including a piece titled “Everyday Dress,” constructed from disposable hospital gowns and enlaced with rose thorns. This garment is the first artwork to ever be displayed in the Moncrief Cancer Institute’s lobby.

This dress was born from Chase’s own experience with long-term illness — the ill effects of a concussion after a car accident — and her subsequent time spent in medical care and recovery. Like the majority of the pieces in this collection, Chase says, “It’s about growth and regrowth — it prompts you to think about the experience of being in the body: it can be euphoric, but also very painful, difficult and fracturing.”

In an interview with Meldrum, Chase said the pieces work well at the Moncrief because they emphasize “how we grow and change despite, and often because of, adversity.”

“A lot of my work deals with themes of recovery, growth through difficulty and outgrowing old selves. My hope is that my work can help people in this difficult place feel a little less alone,” Chase said.

These themes are perhaps best represented in the work “Slow Growth (Bloom),” a tattered, loosely woven white dress, pierced and lifted up by flowers growing from within. “This piece was the jumping-off point for the title,” Meldrum said. “The visual metaphor of flowering emphasizes a state of growth: change can be hard, but it’s a natural part of being human.”

“Emily’s work is full of all kinds of details, metaphors and layers of meaning; I wanted visitors to see something new every

time they walked through the gallery,” she added.

Chase, who had been studying painting at the U of A, discovered paper as a medium during an Honors Collegefunded study-abroad trip to Italy.

“In a museum shop, I saw a book of paper garments by Belgian artist Isabelle de Borchgrave. I couldn’t fit it in my suitcase, but I ordered it as soon as I got back to Arkansas.” She came back determined to work with paper for her honors thesis, and produced three exquisitely crafted, life-sized paper gowns inspired by Grimms’ fairy tales. These pieces and other works in paper earned her the Windgate Fellowship Award and Tulsa Artist

Fellowship, which have supported travel, study and artistic exploration.

Given this chain of events, Chase said, “My Honors College experience changed my life in a very literal and intense way.”

Meldrum is equally grateful for her time at the U of A: “I loved Fayetteville, and having Crystal Bridges right up the road inspired me to choose Arkansas. I was able to hit the ground running and get involved in their programming my freshman year.” Meldrum later became the first paid curatorial intern at the museum and assisted curatorial staff with the artist archives and accompanying interpretive exhibition on Buckminster Fuller’s Fly’s Eye Dome.

Meldrum, who recently completed a master’s degree in art history at TCU, relished the opportunity to curate the solo exhibition. For the first time, every visitor to the exhibition will get a catalog about the work featuring an essay by Meldrum and an interview with Jashley Boatwright, an art therapist and TCU professor.

Meldrum tackled this and every other detail with enthusiasm, from contacting Chase to marketing the exhibit, overseeing programming and installing the show. She

even transported the work from Tulsa to Dallas in her Toyota Highlander.

“Luckily Emily’s work is pretty light,” Meldrum said. But still, “fitting everything in was kind of like Tetris.”

Now that “Efflorescence” is installed and open to the public, Meldrum has accepted a Semmes Foundation Internship in Curatorial Studies at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio. Chase is busying herself with holiday projects, including designing the holiday pin for the Philbrook Museum in Tulsa. Her work “Hope Chest,” two 20-foot-by-20foot paper quilts, has been on display at the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa since November.

Though the two are involved in their own projects now, Meldrum is thinking ahead to future collaborations. “I’m really interested in the theme of memory in Emily’s work, and her creations as vessels of memory. I’m excited about the possibility of doing a show with multiple artists that would explore this one theme.”

“Efflorescence” will be on view in the second-floor gallery space of the Moncrief Cancer Institute in Fort Worth, Texas, through February 14, 2020.

Filling a Need Grant to Fund Doctoral Scholars in Special Education Transition

The University of Arkansas and University of Oklahoma have partnered to fulfill a need with a unique program called Razorback-Sooner Scholars: Leaders for Transition.

Leaders for Transition will provide a funded doctoral experience for 10 students at the two universities who want to be special education assistant professors interested in transition services for youth with disabilities and their families.

The universities were awarded a $2.4 million grant from the Office of Special Education Programs of the U.S. Department of Education to fund the program.

The program will recruit, train, support,and prepare leaders at higher education institutions who in turn will prepare future special educators in evidence-based transition practices. Those special education teachers will then help students with high-need disabilities — for example, those who have intellectual disabilities or autism spectrum disorder — to flourish as they move into adulthood.

at the University of Oklahoma, are program leads. U of A faculty members Peggy Schaefer Whitby and Tom Smith will also be involved in supporting the transition program.

“There is a shortage of university professors knowledgeable in transition education,” Williams-Diehm said. “This grant and partnership will help the next generation of professors, and thus preservice educators, have this knowledge. It is very exciting.

“At the University of Arkansas, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to extend our efforts from the funded Teaming for Transition master’s program to continue to build leaders in the field of special education transition services,” she added.

“People who have a passion for special education and that age group, middle school through high school, should apply for this on campus-funded Ph.D. opportunity.”

Razorback-Sooner Scholars will receive free tuition and fees, an annual stipend for up to four years, travel support, space to work on campus, a new laptop computer and mentoring from leaders in the field.

Scholar applications are due by Feb. 1, 2020, for fall 2020 admission.

Path to Success Adams Honored for Mentorship and Scholarship

Paul Adams, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry, was named a Minority Access National Role Model in October.

Adams was recommended for nomination by professor Wes Stites, former chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, who noted that Adams was an obvious candidate for such an award because of his tremendous scholarship and extensive mentorship.

Since his arrival to the University of Arkansas, Adams has excelled as an adviser and mentor for over 70 graduate, undergraduate, and honors students, many of whom came from historically underrepresented or low-income communities.

Adams has served as principal investigator of a National Science Foundation grant that funded the Path to Graduation program, which recruits talented high school students from underrepresented populations to help them thrive and succeed at the university. Forty percent of these students became honors students, and 100% of them graduated.

Adams, who also teaches in the U of A’s interdisciplinary cellular and molecular biology program, earned a B.S. in biochemistry from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and a doctorate in biophysical chemistry from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

Adams’ research and scholarly activities have garnered more than $3 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Arkansas Biosciences Institute, the Arkansas Science and Technology

Authority, and the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Foundation.

The many honors and awards he has received include: the Dr. Nudie L. Williams Outstanding Faculty Award for Diversity from the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, the Case Western Reserve University African American Alumni Association Rising Star Award (2012), the Presidential Award for Excellence in STEM Research and Mentoring from the National Organization of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) (2013), and the Northwest Arkansas Democratic Black Caucus Lifetime Achievement Award for service to the field of education and the community (2015).

The nomination of Adams stated: “He has shined as a true, dedicated, and enthusiastic role model committed to and providing opportunities for students from underprivileged backgrounds to become future scientific leaders in science, technology, engineering and math.”

The Woods Beckon New Residence Hall Uses Structural Timber

The new Adohi Hall at the University of Arkansas opened this fall, and the first students have settled into their rooms.

Adohi Hall is on the south end of campus along Stadium Drive, just east of Bud Walton Arena and south of Pomfret Hall. It includes three buildings, and the projected construction cost is $79.6 million.

The two residential buildings on Stadium Drive are five stories each and provide approximately 200,000 square feet of living space and 708 beds, including room for five 12 / ARKANSAS / WINTER 2019

Living Learning Communities.

A third building, dubbed “The Cabin,� joins the two residential buildings and provides a common area for gathering.

Adohi is the only residence hall project in the United States to use cross-laminated timber and the first multistory advanced-timber structure in Arkansas. This construction material creates much less waste than materials like concrete or steel.

A few finishing touches are underway on the building,

including exterior landscape work and a new parking lot being built across the street.

Moving In Hundreds of students moved into the facility this August.

New residents and their families were greeted by University Housing staff, who helped them carry belongings from their cars to their new rooms.

“The volunteers were friendly and eager to help,” said Becky Antes, the mother of a freshman moving into Adohi Hall.

“I feel so good about leaving my daughter here,” Antes said. “I never lived in a dorm in college, so I wasn’t sure what to expect.”

Madelyn Holiman, a freshman music business major from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, was nervous in the weeks leading up to move-in, “but [my] room

is gorgeous, and the whole housing is incredible,” she said.

Creative Community Holiman chose to live in Adohi because of the music Living Learning Communities. She plays trumpet for the university’s marching band and is excited about the unique community.

Students in the communities live alongside others who share their interests.

These communities also provide unique access to faculty members and a variety of events and study groups.

“Although it is not a requirement, many students living in Adohi are pursuing majors in art, music or architecture,” said Mary Peacock, creative community coordinator for University Housing.

The Creative Community space is located on the first floor of the southernmost building, Adohi South.

The creative community is open to residents living in the hall and designed to enhance their academic experience by giving them access to tools and training in the creative arts.

The space features: • Music practice rooms • Movement studio • Graphic design studio • Indoor and outdoor performance areas • Recording studio and green room

• Maker space with 3-D printer and software, laser cutter, sewing machines, soldering equipment and other crafting tools • Paint room that allows the exhaust from the paint fumes to be extracted.

Adohi Hall is the first new residence hall to open on campus since Founders Hall in 2013. The Maples neighborhood, including Maple Hill East, Maple Hill South and Maple Hill West, were constructed in two phases between 2007 and 2008.

Why Adohi?

Adohi is a Cherokee word that means “woods” or “forest.”

It was chosen as the name of the new hall because of the use of timber in the design and to honor and remember the native people who passed near the area during the Trail of Tears period.

There is a marker south of the hall that recognizes the passage of those native people as they traveled to Oklahoma.

U of A officials consulted with the Cherokee Nation Speaker Bureau to ensure the word’s meaning was used appropriately before using the word “Adohi.”

“The Cherokee Nation has a long and storied history in Arkansas, where our

ancestors once settled around Fort Smith as old settlers, and thousands walked through what is now Fayetteville on the Northern Route of the Trail of Tears in 1838-39. Today, we have 13,000 of our tribal citizens living in the state of Arkansas, and we also have 5,000 students on college scholarships with many of those earning degrees at U of A,” former Principal Chief Bill John Baker said.

“What a great honor to have this new, beautiful residence hall incorporate our Cherokee history and contributions by naming it Adohi Hall,” he said.

The university opened its first naturalsurface trail on campus this year on the wooded slope known as Oak Ridge, just south of McIlroy Avenue and the Walton College of Business.

The U of A collaborated with Progressive Trail Design and the Walton Family Foundation to establish the new natural-surface trail, part of what will become a system of trails on campus.

Across the winter and spring of 2019,

informal paths were reclaimed and replaced with a sustainable trail system that enhances the safety and aesthetics of the Oak Ridge.

The updated system of paths includes decomposed granite trails, gateway mountain bike trails, cedar steps and flagstone trailheads. Each natural surface provides a unique experience while fulfilling the design considerations of that area. The finished product is durable, lowimpact, scenic and fun for users.

Eric Boles, director of the U of A Office for Sustainability said the trail’s proximity to campus, residents and schools makes it perfect for both recreation and transportation.

“I’m glad to see this scenic hillside receive an enhancement that will improve the experience of all users,” Boles said.

“Whether you’re walking to class, going for a jog, or rolling a mountain bike towards Mount Kessler, you’ll enjoy the reimagined Oak Ridge.”

Two more natural-surface trails are planned to be completed on the U of A campus over the next couple of years. The work is supported with a grant from the Walton Family Foundation along with U of A matching resources for site work and land allocation.

Fayetteville and Northwest Arkansas have become a mecca for mountain bikers.

Fayetteville has built more than 20 miles of soft-surface trails, and the region adds more than 100 miles.

On the Job Degree Online Program Allows Licensed Nurses to Continue Studies

When the University of Arkansas launched an online program this year for licensed practical nurses who wanted to complete their bachelor’s degree in nursing, 46 students enrolled.

They live in communities across the state and beyond.

They bring diverse backgrounds and a variety of experiences to the online classroom environment. The one commonality, though, is that they need flexibility of working while also taking classes.

Students learn key nursing concepts to address health care needs in diverse settings, including hospitals, schools and clinical offices. The required clinicals can be taken in the student’s geographical area, so travel to campus is not necessary.

Crystal Johnson, who lives in Little Rock, appreciates the flexibility. She currently works pro re nata, working shifts at assisted living centers, nursing homes and clinics.

Johnson wants to earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the U of A to secure an inpatient unit job and eventually a nurse manager position.

“My ultimate goal is to work in academia as an associate professor,” she said. “U of A is the top school in Arkansas. So when the program was announced, I was ecstatic not only because the program is online but because the program is through U of A. So I just had to jump on the opportunity and apply.”

The online program is also reaching nurses outside of Arkansas.

Devin Shuck, who lives in Idaho with his wife and three daughters, has been in the medical industry for about five years, starting out as a certified nursing assistant. In 2018, he earned an L.P.N. degree through North Idaho College and now works in correctional medicine.

“It is my desire to further my education to better serve the patient population that is placed in my care and to have a positive effect in their care and individually,” he said.

“This program will allow me to continue to work while I complete my education goals to further my career. The biggest blessing that this program has to offer for me is that I will be able to continue to raise my family in our beautiful area while going to school.”

Susan Patton, director of the Eleanor Mann School of Nursing, said the bachelor’s degree in nursing will help practitioners face the challenges of an aging population, a dynamic healthcare environment and a pending nursing shortage.

“The B.S.N. degree is becoming the new standard for registered nurses,” she said.

“Our B.S.N. programs are comprehensive and offer knowledge that can be applied in all health care settings such as critical care, primary care, public health and mental health.”

All That Jazz A New Music Concentration

Jordan Strickland, a senior in music education, started a hip hop, R&B, funk and jazz band in 2017 called Honey Collective. They played gigs, went on tour and recorded an EP. “After that, I just wanted to continue performing,” he said.

This fall, the Department of Music began offering a new concentration in jazz studies for its Bachelor of Music degree. Strickland jumped on the new concentration.

“The jazz studies concentration would give me the opportunity to perform and play and write music,” he said. “I love creating music in general.”

The new degree program features courses specifically designed for jazz-focused musicians in improvisation, history, analysis and pedagogy. The new degree is housed in a formalized Jazz Area within the Department of Music.

“It’s a great moment for this department,” said Jake Hertzog, a senior instructor of guitar. “The addition of a jazz degree creates all sorts of opportunities for students not only in jazz, but to build on that jazz and classical foundation for all sorts of careers in music.”

“The Department of Music has offered jazz for decades,” said Ronda Mains, chair of the department.

“We have wonderful jazz musicians on our faculty and have always supported the jazz community in Northwest Arkansas.”

Two long-time U of A music faculty, Jim Greeson and Gerry Sloan, established space for jazz education and ensembles during their tenure. Now both retired, Greeson and Sloan’s legacies have continued through a variety of jazz performance opportunities on campus.

Mains said, “Building on that foundation, we have hired a number of talented faculty members who can take our jazz offerings to the next level and offer our students a more complete experience in jazz studies.”

The new jazz program includes eight faculty members who are acclaimed performers and scholars representing many areas of jazz and contemporary music.

Hertzog said he’s “particularly excited” about the faculty who have been hired more recently to round out the new degree program. “They have different kinds of backgrounds and experiences and so are able to cover a lot of ground,” he said. “The diversity of what we can offer means we can offer students more options.”

As for why the department has decided to offer a jazz concentration now, Hertzog said, “It’s about critical mass. … The idea of this has been in somebody’s brain, but it took time” to develop the program. He said they needed to “strategically target” hiring new faculty with jazz backgrounds, then they could bring together the curriculum. Previously, he said, “we had a jazz musician here, a jazz specialist there. But once we had enough people, we could make a degree plan where they can make that a focus.”

He said one of the goals of the new concentration is “to help our students be prepared for the 21st century music industry, especially as it relates to jazz.”

To that end, the jazz concentration includes both new and established ensembles, such as jazz combos, the World Music Ensemble, the Latin American Music Ensemble, and the U of A Jazz Orchestra. Additional performance groups such as the Arkansas Soul Band and the Songwriters Ensemble provide popular music opportunities within the program as well.

Hertzog said another goal of the program is to boost jazz in Northwest Arkansas and the surrounding region.

“We want to engage the community in ways that are new and exciting,” he said.

The department has several events scheduled to do just that. Events and information can be found at jazz.uark.edu.

They have spent the summer and fall making their way around the building, repairing and repainting the 144-year-old woodwork that trims the mansard roof of the university’s first permanent academic building.

Most of the wood trim is still in great shape, hardened by the years. But, small spots where water condenses after a heavy rain or where a minor seep dampens

the wood over and again for years can soften it and start rot. The north side of the building, in particular, has less opportunity to dry out because it never sees the sun.

So the carpenters went in search of these soft and rotted spots, pushing fingers into mushy little holes, cleaning them out, and replacing the damaged spots with new wood or a durable filler. Behind them, painters followed, adding thick coats of white to the entire surface of the woodwork under the soffits and overhangs up to the tip top of the North Tower.

Free the Books

University of Arkansas faculty have written three openly licensed textbooks that are now available in the Open Textbook Library.

• Open Technical Writing: An OpenAccess Text for Instruction in Technical and Professional Writing was written by Adam Rex Pope, assistant professor in the Department of English.

• University Physics I: Classical Mechanics was written by Julio Gea-Banacloche, professor in the Department of Physics.

• Astronomy for Educators was written

by Daniel E. Barth, clinical assistant professor of curriculum and instruction.

Each of these faculty members was awarded Open Educational Resources Course Materials Conversion Program funding from the Libraries and Global Campus to help them complete these textbooks. Elaine Thornton, open education and distance learning librarian, submitted the textbooks to the Open Textbook Library for inclusion.

“Each of these works, as well as an online textbook authored by Michael Thomsen, is available in the U of A’s institutional repository,” Thornton said. “Each textbook has been accessed by individuals from many states and several countries. One of the goals of the open education community is to share resources as broadly as possible. Having the textbooks listed in the Open Textbook Library takes sharing to another level by making our authors’ work visible to a larger population of educators and students.”

The Open Textbook Library currently lists 664 openly licensed textbooks. Over 400 of the listed textbooks have been

Reducing Rice’s Carbon Footprint A Collaboration Between Farmer and Professor

At the edge of Chris Isbell’s rice field, three miles south of Bayou Meto, the famous duck-hunting wetland, Ben Runkle tight-rope walks the narrowest of bridges, a oneby-12 plank spanning two cinderblock towers.

He’s proud of the bridge, designed and built it himself, so he and his students can reach the meteorological 22 / ARKANSAS / WINTER 2019

tower on the other side of the field’s drainage ditch. He’s wearing heavy-duty waterproof boots, hardly the right footwear for the slackline-like sortie, and his arms swing out to maintain balance; Runkle’s trying to get to the tower without falling or looking silly. He manages to avoid both.

The tower, 12 feet tall and supported by tripod sticks, measures everything — the basics, such as air temperature, rainfall, wind speed, and relative humidity, and the advanced, including soil nutrients and acidity, water vapor concentration, water evaporation rate, soil moisture and temperature, and, perhaps most importantly, carbon emissions in form of methane and carbon dioxide.

Runkle, assistant professor of biological and agricultural engineering, has been visiting Isbell Farms once a month, on average, for the past four years. Data gleaned from the tower help him quantify what Chris Isbell and his son Mark have known anecdotally for years, that their once unique but now internationally renowned method of growing rice is significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“We’re grateful for Ben,” says Mark Isbell, who started working on the farm when he was 13. In addition to putting the numbers behind their sustainable practices, Runkle “keeps us fresh,” Mark says. “He helps generate new ideas and connects us to a different sphere of influence.”

dense clay, an impermeable hardpan, as they call it, which functions like a pond liner. It holds the water in place longer than the permeable, sand-based fields closer to the Arkansas and White rivers. It is this impermeable, hardpan clay that makes this area of Arkansas famous for growing rice.

But the traditional method, at least in Arkansas, is fraught with problems. Like all plants, rice loves water, but farmers all over the world are learning their fields don’t need so much of it. In large part, this is due to the Isbells, who discovered that flooding paddies, primarily for weed control, was unsustainable.

In addition to contributing to the depletion of a precious resource, paddy farming comes with a high environmental impact. Worldwide, rice production accounts for roughly 10 percent of humans’ overall methane emissions. Because the soil is deprived of oxygen during flooding, microbes within it produce and emit methane, a more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, which is also emitted in high quantities with the traditional method because of the pumps that pull groundwater from aquifers for irrigation.

Worldwide Staple

Zero Grade

Rice is a staple food for more than 3 billion people worldwide, and Arkansas is the top American producer.

According to the Arkansas Farm Bureau, the state produces 200 million bushels a year, grown on more than a million acres. This equals roughly half of all rice grown in the United States, more than Texas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi and Missouri combined. In terms of caloric consumption, Isbell Farms alone feeds 78 million people per day, according to Chris Isbell’s calculations.

As soon as you exit Interstate 40 at Carlisle, 40 miles east of Little Rock and 15 miles north of the Isbells, you can see how most people grow it: irregular-shaped paddies separated by long squiggly levees, not more than few feet tall. From a crop duster, these levees look like lines on a topo map, which is exactly what they are. Even from ground level, the land only appears flat. (Foreigners swear it is, but Isbell, like everyone else in his family, can spot the subtlest grade.) Instead, on these fields where farmers use the traditional method, or paddies, the land is sloped, or on a grade, as they say down here. The levees serve as miniature dams; farmers use them to flood paddies, and the grade helps move water from one paddy to another.

This method wouldn’t work just anywhere. It’s possible because the soil down here is composed of a

On 3,000 acres, they grow long-grain, Sake, and other varieties of Japanese rice, including one grain, Koshihikari, which the Japanese thought could not be grown outside Japan.

Leroy, who died in 2014, was curious and ingenious.

“My dad never bought a piece of equipment that he didn’t modify somehow to serve us better,” Chris says. In addition to tinkering with and improving implements, Leroy also thought about systems and processes. He questioned conventions pursued for no reason other than tradition, especially when yields were low or resources waned.

Such as the 1970s, when the water table started to descend. Though few people noticed it, water was going to be a precious resource, much more expensive to irrigate.

To save money on pumping, the Isbells decided to try an experiment. Gradually, they started taking down the levees and leveling the land. This new method allowed water to nourish the plants but removed its herbicide function.

Leveling also meant the Isbells and their workers did not have to spend hours walking the levees with shovels, looking for and repairing the breaches that frequently occurred and drained water from paddies prematurely.

These measures succeeded, but the Isbells weren’t finished. Chris remembers the day in 1977 when they decided to go all the way. His father placed a matchstick under a two-by-four, and they watched water run down the board. Any grade, even one-tenth of an inch per 100 feet, caused water to move laterally. They wanted it to move vertically and in one direction, down.

Initially, to level the fields, they had to eye-ball it. This worked okay, but it was inexact. Then land-survey lasers became commercially available, and the guesswork was over. By 1977, Isbell Farms was the first-ever “zero grade” rice farm.

Word spread about the Arkansas rice farmers who’d jettisoned paddies and were still producing high-quality rice. Farmers, researchers and agriculture policymakers from many countries, including Uruguay, Japan, Russia and Panama, visited Isbell Farms to observe the method, and the Isbells traveled to Costa Rica and Panama to advise rice farmers, including the vice-president of Panama. In following years, upon invitation from the Japanese government, the Isbells traveled to Japan multiple times. (Chris and Judy Isbell have developed many meaningful and long-lasting friendships with Japanese farmers, including one who essentially lived on their farm for several months.) Today, the zero-grade method is practiced all over the world. As an example of its success, the U.S. Department of Agriculture pays rice farmers to level their fields.

“People thought we were crazy,” Chris says.

But they didn’t understand how the Isbells worked. The zero-grade approach, as with so many other Isbell Farms’ innovations and best practices, came to them after much experimentation. Even before they started leveling, the Isbells had played around with flat areas — to this day, Chris maintains a four-acre experimental plot adjacent to his and Judy’s house — and noticed they’d probably work.

Sure, Leroy might have had crazy ideas, but that only lumped him in with every other innovator. And, because of their rich experience with rice, the Isbells’ innovations were always calculated risks.

Chris inherited his father’s curiosity, ingenuity and unconventionality, which he passed down to his son Mark. These qualities and others, including a kind of sensible fearlessness, have motivated them to try new ideas, their own and others’. Which explains Isbell Farms’ long tradition of collaborating with researchers and other innovators.

“We never say no to anyone,” Chris says. “Though sometimes we should have.”

A Mutually Beneficial Collaboration One person they’re glad they said yes to is Runkle.

The U of A researcher, who received a National Science Foundation Early Career Development award in 2018 to expand his research on sustainable rice production, opened new doors of opportunity for the Isbells. In addition to putting numbers behind their sustainable methods — that is, the specific amount of methane and carbon dioxide emissions from the Isbells’ operations, compared to those of conventional farms — Runkle helped shepherd Isbell Farms through a new and exciting venture.

In 2017, armed with data provided by Runkle, the Isbells, along with six other rice farms, sold the first-ever carbon offset credits for credibly measured benefits of their sustainable practices. Managed by Terra Global Capital on behalf of Microsoft, and established according to a strict protocol developed by the American Carbon Registry, these carbon credits financially reward farmers for voluntarily adopting conservation management practices and other measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

But the relationship between farmer and researcher is mutually beneficial. Back at the tower, Runkle hunkers behind a ridiculous cluster of wires leading to a data bank inside a weather-proofed plastic box. After switching out a data card, he pokes his head out of this tangled web and says what’s in it for him: “There’re just so many research questions out here.”

To Runkle, Leroy Isbell’s rice fields are one big laboratory. With assistance from the Early Career award and other funding sources, Runkle, one postdoctoral researcher and several students, graduate and undergraduate, use Isbell Farms and methods to investigate: • How irrigation strategies allow more microbial activity in unsaturated soils • How much water is used by the plants in transpiration, and how much evaporates from the surface • How large fields — those between 40 and 80 acres — have areas with greater or lower methane production due to differences in soil type and rice cover • How the offseason use of the fields as flooded duck habitat influences crop growth and greenhouse gas emissions the following year.

These questions, likely to beget others, will keep Runkle and his students busy at Isbell Farms for years to come.

Naming Honors Coach Nolan Richardson ✪ The University of Arkansas unveiled Nolan Richardson Court at Bud Walton Arena Oct. 20 during an exhibition game between the Razorback men’s basketball and UALR. “Today’s a climax,” coach Richardson said. “I didn’t go into coaching to have things named after me, but I’ve been very fortunate and very blessed. I’ve received so many awards, and I don’t deserve any of them. I think my players, my coaching staff, and, of course, the fans are the real winners.”

In Richardson’s 22 combined years as a head coach at the collegiate level — at Western Texas Junior College, the University of Tulsa and the University of Arkansas — he compiled a record of 508-206 (.711) and became the only head coach in college basketball history to win a National

Junior College Championship, NIT Championship and NCAA Championship. The latter came in 1994 during Richardson’s tenure at Arkansas when the Razorbacks defeated the Duke Blue Devils 76-72 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Richardson Court at Bud Walton Arena blends the classic and unmistakable look of the Arkansas Razorbacks, pays homage to the program’s unique relationship with the state, while paying tribute to its Hall of Fame and national championship winning namesake and his style of play.

The design combines elements of both the current and classic Razorback identity with the signature of the man who led Arkansas to unprecedented success in men’s basketball.

Nolan Richardson Court

Three-Point Arcs

In a tribute to Hall of Famer and former Arkansas head men’s basketball coach, the court features two customized logos in celebration of the naming of Nolan Richardson Court. The logos, measuring 6 feet high and 10 feet long, feature Coach Richardson’s original signature as well as a Slobbering Hog logo. One logo is located near the home bench on the north side of the court while the second logo is located opposite the visitor bench on the south side of the court near the TV Broadcast table.

Nolan Richardson Court includes a pair of three-point arcs with a 22-foot, 1.75-inch arc for men’s basketball and a 20-foot, 9-inch arc for women’s basketball. The area inside the women’s three-point arc, including the lane, is accented by a darker stained wood.

Slobbering Hog The Slobbering Hog Logo was previously at midcourt of Barnhill Arena and Bud Walton Arena and became synonymous with coach Richardson’s signature “40 Minutes of Hell” style of play during his 17-year tenure at the U of A. A Slobbering Hog is included in each of the Nolan Richardson Court logos.

Classic Razorback The Classic Razorback is the centerpiece of the new floor design. Measuring 10 feet, 3 inches tall and 23 feet, 9 inches long, the signature Razorback showcases Nolan Richardson Court at Bud Walton Arena in a way to make it clear to those watching on television throughout the nation and around the world that this is the U of A — the Home of the Razorbacks.

SEC Logos Both lanes include a cardinal Southeastern Conference logo measuring 4 feet, 6 inches high by 4 feet, 6 inches long. Arkansas joined the SEC in men’s and women’s basketball in the 1991-92 season, after previously competing in the Southwest Conference.

Bud Walton Arena Commemoration Located just below the basket in the lane on the west end of the court is a special on-court marking commemorating the first dunk in Bud Walton Arena.

The dunk was made on a temporary goal by the arena’s namesake, Bud Walton, as part of special groundbreaking ceremonies Oct. 23, 1991. The marking has been a part of every court since Bud Walton Arena opened in 1993.

Baselines Nolan Richardson Court features the wordmarks “Arkansas” on the west baseline and “Razorbacks” on the east baseline. The wordmarks are in the customized Razorback font.

Outline of the State of Arkansas The Razorbacks represent more than just the U of A — they represent an entire state.

Setting a Pace Razorback Stanley Kebenei Helps Break Two-Hour Barrier in Marathon

the screen in the tent. You look at the man, and he’s very straightforward. In his mind, you can tell, he’s saying, ‘Yeah, I’m going to make history today.’”

Then came Kebenei’s turn at pacing.

He ran out on the course as part of the eighth team of pacers, switching with another running team like a baton being handed off in a relay. Kebenei became one of the two leaders on the road during a crucial period for Kipchoge as he neared the 20-mile mark. Kebenei and four more pacers created a “V” to break the airstream for Kipchoge, who ran behind the point of the “V.” Behind him, two more runners stayed close to reduce any trailing negative air pressure.

After Kebenei finished his turn as a pacer, a commentator asked him whether he had doubts that Kipchoge would break the barrier. Kebenei said, “I am confident.

I believe in Eliud 100 percent.”

Occasionally during the last three miles, Kipchoge smiled. Each smile was his way of overcoming a momentary pain.

But his shoulders looked relaxed, his gait the same in mile 24 as in mile 1. In the last quarter mile, the final pace team peeled away from Kipchoge to let him finish on his own. He came across the line with a time of 1 hour, 59 minutes and 40 seconds. He had broken 2 hours with 20 seconds to spare.

“This means a lot, not only for the continent of Africa, but the world at large,” said Kebenei. “Eliud will be the first human to run under 2 hours, and this is so inspiring, not only to runners all over the world, but to everybody, that no human is limited.”

In October, Razorback alumnus Stanley Kebenei ran pace as part of a team supporting his fellow Kenyan, the great runner Eliud Kipchoge, who hoped to run a marathon under 2 hours.

Kipchoge already held the world race record for the marathon, but the Nike and Ineos companies set a challenge for a runner to break the 2-hour mark. The run wouldn’t be under race conditions, so it wouldn’t qualify for the record books, but the challenge was intended to see how fast a human could run 26.2 miles.

Kebenei lettered at Arkansas from 2013 to 2015, becoming an eight-time AllAmerican and two-time NCAA runner-up in the steeplechase. This time, though, he wouldn’t be running for himself.

“It’s not about running,” Kebenei told a commentator at the run in Vienna, Austria. “It’s about inspiring everybody in the world that everything is possible and nothing is limited for you.”

The marathon run was conducted on a closed 6-mile circuit, and teams of seven runners ran pace for Kipchoge, keeping a pattern around him to reduce air and wind resistance. Nothing was guaranteed, though.

Kipchoge began to fall slightly off the pace near the mid-point. Two years earlier, he had tried to break the 2-hour mark in a similar run in Italy and had fallen off the needed pace, never to recover. This time, though, he slowly regained his speed.

While waiting for his turn as a pace runner, Kebenei watched Kipchoge’s run unfold from the pace team’s tent.

“It was really emotional,” Kebenei said afterward. “We looked at Eliud’s eyes on

Women’s Cross Country Team Wins First National Championship

For the first time in program history, head coach Lance Harter and the top-ranked women’s cross country team have captured the NCAA Cross Country title.

The Razorbacks won by six points, finishing with 96 after a third-place mark by Katie Izzo, followed closely

by Taylor Werner in fourth. Devin Clark (21st) and Carina Viljoen (28th) rounded out Arkansas All-America honorees, while Lauren Gregory completed Arkansas’ team score.

“This is the crowning achievement,” Harter said. “They just followed the race plan perfectly. This is always a treasure for a coach because most of the time they don’t listen, but they did at the regional meet and carried it to the national meet.

“I knew we were going to finish strong. Katie and Taylor are both just so tough, if someone is going to get by them, they have to be extra special. Devin and Carina have good leg speed, so once they have to start 30 / ARKANSAS / WINTER 2019

matching people, usually nine times out of 10 the result will be positive. The one that really did a fantastic job and sacrificed her redshirt season for this team was Lauren.

Once she said, ‘Hey we’re going to go for it,’ it just made everyone accountable.”

Four times an NCAA runner-up (’91, ’92, ’93, ’99), the Razorback team is a bridesmaid no more as the NCAA Cross Country Championship, the first in program history, caps a perfect season for Arkansas that saw the Razorbacks win every meet they competed in including an unprecedented seventh-straight SEC title, a ninth-straight regional title — posting a perfect score — and capturing the elusive NCAA cross country team title.

The title completes the puzzle for Arkansas, which became only the second program in NCAA history to win all six championships (men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s indoor, women’s indoor, men’s outdoor, and women’s outdoor) joining the University of Oregon.

It is the fifth overall women’s national championship, contributing to the track program’s 46 national titles overall.

“2019 will always be prominent in my household,” Harter said. “The track team did such a tremendous job to pull off the upset indoors, then wait until the mile relay to pull off the upset outdoors. We had two of the steps, now it was about taking the third. This is really special. I was really appreciative my peers. I think they knew this was going to be one of those years in my career that we could maybe scare some people and try to get back on the podium. And that’s what we always talk about — get on the podium, and it’ll sort itself out.”

It marked the first time since 1993 that Arkansas has had four All-Americans, which is awarded to the top 40 finishers in the national championship race. Taylor Werner became the 10th Razorback to earn at least two All-American honors in cross country over her career.

With the win, Arkansas is only the second NCAA women’s team to accomplish the three-season triple crown, joining the University of Texas women who did it in 1986 (the University of Oregon also did an academicyear sweep of cross country, indoor and outdoor in 2016/17).

Razorback Soccer Record-Setting Season

The No. 8 ranked Razorback Soccer team wrapped up its 2019 season with an SEC Championship, and a national seed in the NCAA Tournament, while setting numerous program firsts along the way.

On Sept. 15, Arkansas downed top-ranked North Carolina, 2-0, notching the program’s first back-toback wins against ranked opponents and becoming the first SEC team to beat the Tar Heels by two or more goals in history.

The Razorbacks went on to match a program high with eight SEC wins, clinching the program’s first overall title. Three Razorbacks were honored by the conference in its postseason awards with head coach Colby Hale being named the SEC Coach of the Year, junior Haley VanFossen named SEC Co-Defender of the Year and Anna Podojil picking up the SEC Freshman of the Year, all firsts for Arkansas.

In postseason play Arkansas made its way to the SEC title game for the fourth-straight year. Podojil, senior Stefani Doyle and senior goalkeeper Katie Lund were named to the SEC All-Tournament team.

Rising as high as No. 6 in both the United Soccer Coaches poll and the RPI late in the season, Arkansas earned a national three seed in the NCAA Tournament, the first in school history, and it’s fourth-straight appearance in the tournament.

In the NCAA Tournament, Arkansas put away three goals against North Texas to earn a shutout at Razorback Field, improving its home record to 18-12 in the past two seasons. The Razorbacks advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and ended its season with a 17-4-2 record.

Blair Center Receives $1 Million Campaign Gift in Memory of Namesake Alumnus Brian Wolff ✪ has committed a $1 million estate gift to the university in support of the Diane D. Blair Center of Southern Politics and Society in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences.

Wolff, a Pine Bluff native, was the first person in his family to graduate from college and said the impact and responsibility of that experience propelled him into his career in Washington, D.C. As a student, he studied under the center’s late namesake, Diane Blair, who became a mentor and inspiration to him.

“Diane highlighted unconscious bias and opened our eyes to it,” Wolff said. “When I thought about providing a gift to the university and what effect it would have, I thought about Diane and the body of work being done in the Blair Center.”

Fellow U of A alumnus and associate professor Angie Maxwell is director of the Blair Center, which supports and promotes the critical, interdisciplinary study of

the general politics, identity politics, and culture of the American South’s past and present. Maxwell also holds the university’s Diane Blair Endowed Professorship in Southern Studies.

“We’re still captivated by the complexity of the South and the entrenched beliefs of its people,” Wolff said. “There are broad misunderstandings and misconceptions about the South, and the work being done by Angie Maxwell and the Blair Center will stand the test of time. This gift will sustain that work into the future.”

Wolff holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Fulbright College and is on the Arkansas Alumni Association Board of Directors and the Arkansas Alumni Association campaign committee.

“I’ve always been proud of the university and value the importance of staying connected with the place and people that played such a major role in my life,” Wolff said. “I strive to be even more connected.”

Steuart Walton Leads Campaign Arkansas in Final Year Campaign Arkansas, the capital campaign aimed at advancing academic opportunity at the University of Arkansas, is continuing its positive momentum in its final year.

The campaign, which began July 1, 2012, includes a goal of raising $1.25 billion by its conclusion June 30, 2020.

Steuart L. Walton will lead Campaign Arkansas as chair this year as the campaign reaches its conclusion.

He is an entrepreneur, founder, and chairman of Game Composites, co-founder of the Runway Group, and sits on the Walmart Board of Directors.

“Steuart brings a fresh perspective to the campaign and will fuel the momentum of the final year and beyond,” said Chancellor Joe Steinmetz. “He has a history of

bringing innovative ideas and projects to Arkansas, and I look forward to working with him to move the university forward in new and meaningful ways.”

Walton joins a distinguished group of prior campaign co-chairs including Boyce Billingsley, Marilyn Bogle, and Johnelle Hunt, who served together as the initial Campaign Arkansas co-chairs. Other former co-chairs serving with Walton on the campaign’s executive committee include Bill Dillard II, Doug and Shelley McMillon, Reynie Rutledge, and Bob and Sandra Connor.

Walton’s uncle, Rob Walton; and father, Jim Walton, both served as chairs of the Campaign for the TwentyFirst Century in 1998-1999 and 2002-2003, respectively.

“It’s an honor to lead the university through its final year of Campaign Arkansas,” Walton said. “For 150 years, the university has been a key player in the state’s business community, and as we look toward the future, I’m excited about how this campaign will transform and strengthen the university, this region and state.”

Meet Your 2019-2020 Chancellor’s Society Co-Chairs: Erik and Brandy Tuft Erik and Brandy Tuft of Rogers met on the University of Arkansas campus as students and both graduated from the Sam M. Walton College of Business. The couple resides in Rogers, where Brandy is a managing director of assurance services with Ernst & Young and Erik is a retirement plan adviser with Arvest Wealth Management.

The Tufts have a passion for education and believe that the more educated someone is, the better he or she can impact the world around them. They have given generously to the U of A, supporting students through a scholarship in the Walton College and an Advance Arkansas endowment.

The Chancellor’s Society is the most prestigious annual giving group, celebrating benefactors who have reached a cumulative giving of $2,000 or more in a fiscal year.

This means that since the fall of 1990, chapters and societies have contributed to the Arkansas Alumni Association’s Scholarship Program in a big way. These awards, coupled with other scholarships offered by the association, have made a significant impact on students attending the U of A. Overall, the scholarship program has awarded 5,520 scholarships valued at $10.7 million.

The association is proud to help make a real difference in the lives of our students and support the next generation of Arkansas alumni.

One of my favorite ways to give back to, and engage with, my alma mater is participating in the U of A Annual Fund’s program, “All in for Arkansas.”

For the fifth year in a row, the University of Arkansas will be celebrating its birthday in a big way by hosting a day of giving April 1-2, 2020. All In for Arkansas is an 1,871-minute online fundraiser that unites the Razorback family around the world and rallies support for academic programs and studentsuccess initiatives across campus. In fact, in 2019, All In for Arkansas raised a record-breaking $465,123 from 1,420 gifts! All in for Arkansas provides supporters the option to donate to a wide variety of departments, scholarships, or causes that are near and dear to their hearts — including YOUR Arkansas Alumni Association.

On campus, students are encouraged to get involved by going All In for Arkansas, too! Because the annual day of giving lines up with the U of A’s birthday, the Student Alumni Association and Student Alumni Board collaborate with the Office of Annual Giving to host a huge birthday party for the university, complete with cake, games and Razorback spirit!

Last year, the association proudly raised $34,810 from 119 gifts. These donations were used to help fund scholarships and alumni engagement opportunities all across the country. It is our mission to “connect and serve the University of Arkansas family,” and thanks to those who participated in All In for Arkansas, we’ve been able to connect with more alumni, students and friends than ever before!

Funds raised over the past three years of All in for Arkansas have contributed to the association’s wellestablished scholarship program. Many of the scholarships available to students are established by alumni chapters throughout the United States. Since the very first chapter scholarship was awarded, chapters have awarded 1,255 scholarships totaling more than $1.2 million. Similarly,

75th Annual Alumni Awards Association Celebrates Outstanding Alumni, Faculty and Friends The Arkansas Alumni Association hosted its 75th annual Alumni Awards Celebration Nov. 1 at the Fayetteville Town Center. Brandy Cox Jackson, associate vice chancellor for alumni and executive director of the Arkansas Alumni Association, welcomed all and served as Mistress of Ceremonies. Award presentations were made by Provost Jim Coleman, Chancellor Joe Steinmetz, Brandy Cox Jackson, and Teena Gunter, president of the association’s national board of directors.

The alumni association hosted its third annual Homecoming Online Auction from Oct. 25 until Nov. 8. The online auction raised more than $17,000 for the alumni association scholarship program.

The Arkansas Alumni Association Scholarship Program awards Alumni Endowed Scholarships to two top freshman applicants each year. Samantha Giudice

and Ethan Hackworth were selected as the newest Endowed Scholars based on their academic achievements, demonstrated leadership, and community involvement.

Samantha Giudice What does a student from Bethel Heights do after spending their junior year of high school studying abroad in Taiwan? If you are Samantha Guidice, you become one of the newest Alumni Endowed Scholarship recipients.

The thought of studying abroad piqued Samantha’s interest early. After looking into several study-abroad options for high school students — and being accepted into two different programs — Samantha says her dad originally thought she was joking when she told her parents she wanted to complete her junior year of high school in Taiwan through the Rotary Club. She is grateful for her parents’ support and enjoyed turning 17 by eating pizza and having fun with international friends.

The youngest of three children and the only girl, Samantha has always been a go-getter. Growing up, Samantha says she tried every sport but chose to stick with competitive horseback riding. As a freshman at the University of Arkansas, she now divides her time between classes, a job, and rehabilitating a national show horse.

She says having to structure her own schedule and sharing a room have been two of her biggest adjustments so far since coming to campus. Samantha also misses studying with Bella, her favorite of the family’s seven dogs.

Samantha is a business major who admits that having spent her life so close to Fayetteville, attending the U of A was not her first choice. However, she also knew the Walton College of Business is nationally ranked and that if she chose to stay close to home, the U of A is the “best school in the state.” So, she applied and was accepted as an Honors College student and then was awarded 38 / ARKANSAS / WINTER 2019

one of the newest Alumni Endowed Scholars is helping Ethen fulfill his dream, even though his dream seems to be changing a bit and Ethan is exploring other majors within the university. No matter what his major or future career, Ethan remains a huge car buff.

Being the oldest of four siblings (Ethan is one minute older than his twin), he has always looked out for his brothers and put their needs ahead of his own. He is grateful for the loving home his grandmother, a retired teacher, provided but acknowledges that funding for college was not possible. Receiving the Alumni Endowed Scholarship has helped ease part of that burden for Ethan.

If you have the opportunity to talk with Ethan, you will find no self-pity going to college away from the familiarity of all he has known or for growing up without a father. In fact, you will find his personal drive comes from the lack of memories about his father — encouraging himself to build a strong foundation for his future family through a career that fuels his passion for giving to others. Halfway through his first semester, Ethan is enthusiastic about new experiences and hopes to study abroad. Wherever life takes him, Ethan will find ways to help impact others.

Ethan Hackworth Heber Springs Life in a small town means that your friendships are so strong that you become a family. This is how Ethan Hackworth describes growing up in Heber Springs.

Ethan and his three brothers were raised by their grandmother, and he credits her with much of his success through high school.

While he enjoyed running cross country and track and playing percussion in the band, Ethan says what he remembers most is the support and encouragement he received from home, his teachers, and the community.

It was through the support of his Boy Scout leaders that Ethan learned many skills and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. His Eagle project — designing, constructing, and placing bat houses around the community — is something he enjoyed with his twin brother.

While in high school, Ethan looked toward his future and dreamed of following in his late grandfather’s footsteps as an architect and a Razorback. His goal was always to attend the University of Arkansas. Being named

Homecoming 2019 Etched in Stone

The 97th Homecoming Celebrations kicked off a week of longstanding tradition and school spirit on the U of A campus Oct. 28. This year’s theme was “Etched in Stone.”

The Homecoming Team was excited to see this foster an environment of collaboration, unity, and inclusion.

Homecoming week was a time where all Razorbacks participated and showed their love for our great university.

Homecoming kicked off with philanthropy. The Jane B. Gearhart Full Circle Food Pantry hosted a Pack the Pantry event to stock the food pantry. The entire campus community was involved. This resulted in the Jane B. Gearhart Full Circle Food Pantry bringing in 20,252 pounds of food! This will help support our campus community.

The university was covered in red and white as Greek Houses, Housing, and Student Organizations decorated campus in celebration of Razorback spirit.

The week culminated in a busy Friday. The Class of 2018 Senior Walk was dedicated with many of the most recent graduates returning to see their names etched in stone. The longest-standing tradition in Homecoming — the Parade — was a success as student organizations

and community members danced down Dickson on their way to the Chi Omega Greek Theatre. The Homecoming Pep Rally was filled to the brim with Razorback fans as students prepared for the game Saturday.

The evening concluded with the annual National Pan-Hellenic Council’s Homecoming Step Show. This was a great event that supported our historically African American fraternities and sororities as they competed in step and dance. The ballroom was packed with more than 700 tickets sold. The Kappa Kappa chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. received first place, followed by the Kappa Upsilon chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. Third place was the Phi Theta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. Homecoming is more than just a football game. It is a celebration of our school, the far-reaching effects that graduates have had all over the world, and alumni returning to an institution that helped form them into the people they are today. We are already looking forward to next year’s Homecoming and continuing to build the tradition and legacy of your Home on The Hill.

Great Trains and Grand Canyons Razorbacks on Tour

The Arkansas Alumni Association hosted a group of 19 travelers on the Great Trains and Grand Canyons alumni tour in September. The fantastic, five-night journey featured the incredible Grand Canyon and all of its surrounding adventures such as a city tour of Sedona, riding the Pink Jeeps, and a luxurious ride on the Verde

1889 • The state legislature considers banning women from attending the Arkansas Industrial University, and one legislator says Fayetteville and the university are too immoral for female education.

1899 • The Bachelor of Philosophy degree is offered for the first time.

1909 • Under coach Hugo Bezdek, the university’s football team goes undefeated for the first time.

• International students officially become a part of the student body for the first time as part of the newly passed Fulbright Act, legislation introduced by Sen. J. William Fulbright, an alumnus and former president of the university.

• A statewide drive is conducted by Women’s 4-H to fund construction of a house at the northwest corner of Lindell and Douglas streets.

1959 • “Hunkering down,” a campus craze that started at the U of A after a chair shortage at a fraternity house, takes on new life when pictures of students are featured in LIFE magazine.

• Construction begins on Brough Commons and Carlson Terrace apartments.

• The YMCA erects a hut on campus to serve Army students who are training at the university.

• KUA, a closed-circuit radio station on campus, receives a favorable response from students.

• Octagon, an organization composed of eight outstanding senior women, is founded by Martha Reid, dean of women. Membership includes one woman from each of the six sororities, one from Carnall Hall, and one from Fayetteville.

1939 • Stuart P. Cromer is named dean of the Medical School.

• Russ Morgan and his orchestra perform on campus during a 50-cent dance at the Fieldhouse.

1949

• Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, better known as the Fijis, begins using part of Carnall Hall for a chapter house, staying until 1977.

• The Student Senate agrees to sponsor a television program on KGTO-TV once a week. The show will include talent presentations, student government projects, panel discussions, and other aspects of campus life.

1979 • Ten percent of the 1,500 engineering graduates this year are women.

• Virgil W. Adkisson is named the second dean of the Graduate School.

• Willie Nelson gives a concert at Barnhill Arena.

• Alumnus Sidney McMath is elected governor of Arkansas, the youngest in the state’s history up to that point.

• Country music giants George Strait and Charlie Daniels perform at Barnhill Arena for 6,500 fans.

1989

1999 • Robert B. Moberly is named the ninth dean of the School of Law. • After renovation, the Arkansas Union reopens with Burger King, Chickfil-A, a convenience store, a coffee house, and a 24-hour computer lab.

2009 • The School of Architecture is named in honor of its alumnus and the first dean of the school, architect Fay Jones.

• Martin Luther King III speaks at the Fayetteville Town Center as part of the university’s Distinguished Lecture Series.

About 200 WPA workers, who had been admitted free, stood up and cheered loudly. Initially called Bailey Stadium in honor of Arkansas Gov. Carl Bailey, the name was changed to Razorback Stadium when Homer Adkins beat Bailey in the next election.

John N. “Jack” Marr ✪+

John Nelson “Jack” Marr passed away October 29, 2019. He was a professor of psychology at the University of Arkansas for 30 years, starting in 1966. His specialties included learning theories, childhood, and cognitivebehavioral psychology.

In 1976, Marr was selected by the U of A as one of 12 faculty to speak during the United States Bicentennial. He also provided consultative services to the U of A men’s basketball team in 1987. His efforts were concentrated on improving the players’ free throw shooting percentages through the use of relaxation techniques, and he received a letter from then-coach Nolan Richardson expressing his thanks and crediting Marr with the team’s improvements.

Marr was a veteran of the Korean War. He received his Ph.D. in psychology in 1961 from Michigan State University. Marr was an assistant professor at Xavier University in Cincinnati before he was recruited by and hired at the U of A. Marr published five books and over 40 research articles.

He retired from the university with Professor Emeritus status and became the director of the Behavior Therapy and Counseling Clinic in Fayetteville. He held a clinical psychological practice there until his retirement in 2013.

Marr served as president of the Arkansas Psychological Association, president of the American Association of University Professors at the U of A, and chair of the board of the Fayetteville Humane Society.

In 1975, Marr was awarded the Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award for Teaching and Research by the Arkansas Alumni Association. He was an annual member of the alumni association.

Marr is survived by his wife of 64 years, Josephine “Jo” Marr ★+ B.S.E.’80; his son, Brian Marr; his daughter, Amy Wilbourn B.A.’85, J.D.’03; and four grandchildren.
