A love for math and science, fostered by great faculty, now applied in aerospace
Natalie Figueroa, ’24 BS in physics, was in her first year at ASU in Barrett, The Honors College when her mentors encouraged her to become a fellow in Research Professor Ivan Ermanoski’s lab in the College of Global Futures working on a thermochemical reactor for hydrogen production. After a semester, she was hired as his research assistant because of the quality of her work. Her lab experience helped prepare her for a career in science and engineering.

“Ever since I was a kid, [growing up in Goodyear] I was like ASU was the place to go,” she says. As a first-generation student, she was unsure about how to become an engineer but says her professors helped her find her path.

Last fall, students and faculty from the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts presented cutting-edge projects at the MIXibition at the Media and Immersive eXperience (MIX) Center.
Jialong Xu, ’22 BA in communication and a graduate student in the Media Arts and Sciences program in the School of Arts, Media and Engineering, showcased a scuba diving experience game for the Apple Vision Pro. “It’s truly inspiring to see how this event fosters innovation and transforms creative visions into reality,” he says.
The college’s new master’s degree programs, MSD in design (experience design) and MS in media arts and sciences (extended reality technologies), prepare students for careers in digital gaming, extended and virtual realities, interactive environments, themed entertainment, and other forms of immersive storytelling.

Helping student veterans gain the upper hand in employment
A military futures expert told a group of student veterans that 77% of all jobs soon will be impacted or altered by AI and that their positions will change every two and a half years due to a variety of factors. However, there are steps they can take to “job proof” themselves.
“Your brand is your last name, and it means you should be able to give employers five reasons why they should hire you. These are the five values that you represent … that’s your brand,” said Mike Schindler, a U.S. Navy veteran, an award-winning author and speaker at the Pat Tillman Veterans Center’s Futures Night at ASU, which connects veterans with recruiters.
