Marshall Scholar to tackle global water crisis

Katie Sue Pascavis is one of 40 students selected nationwide and will pursue a Master of Philosophy in engineering for sustainable development at Cambridge and a Master of Science in water, sanitation and health engineering at the University of Leeds.

The MacArthur Foundation named ASU’s Amber Wutich, an anthropologist, a 2023 MacArthur “genius” Fellow based on her research to understand the impact of water scarcity on communities.

Herberger Institute Professor Liz Lerman honored as 2023 Guggenheim Fellow

Herberger Professor — and legendary choreographer, artist and author — Liz Lerman was selected as a 2023 Guggenheim Fellow. The annual award honors scientists, writers, scholars and artists across 48 fields who are selected by a rigorous application and peer review process.

Regents Professor Michelene “Micki” Chi won the 2023 Yidan Prize for Education Research, an international honor for helping give teachers a stronger understanding of how students learn.

40-year ASU BIOS study charts warmer, saltier, more acidic oceans that threaten human, environmental health

ASU-led NASA mission to Psyche

The Psyche spacecraft launched Oct. 13, beginning a six-year journey to a metal-rich asteroid that could provide clues into the formation of planets. It’s the first ASU-led deep-space NASA mission. In 2023, 527 students from around the country participated in the undergraduate student programs related to the mission; 573 lifelong learners enrolled in related online courses.

Starbucks to partner with ASU on programming for its new sustainability learning and innovation lab in Costa Rica.

The study, published in Frontiers in Marine Science by the ASU Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences, is the first seasonal temperature record of its kind from anywhere in the world. It provides important data for scientists and policymakers grappling with the effects of climate change.

Turning the tide on our coral reefs, ASU establishes ‘Āko‘ako‘a, a new collaborative effort to seed renewed connection between human, coral communities in Hawaii ASU is creating a $25 million community-based partnership. ‘Āko‘ako‘a means “to assemble” and “coral” and will fuse science programs with the leadership and cultural knowledge of Hawaii’s community partners.

AI is a growing presence in our lives and has great potential for good — but people working with these systems may have low trust in them. A research team at ASU’s Center for Accelerating Operational Efficiency is testing a tool that could help government and industry identify and develop trustworthy AI technology.

Clean heat for manufacturing

The U.S. Department of Energy selected ASU to establish a new Clean Energy Manufacturing Innovation Institute devoted to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from industrial process heating. The industrial sector currently accounts for more than 30% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, and fossil fuel-driven process heating is the most significant contributor.

Health and medicine

ASU Health launches

To tackle the state’s urgent health care needs, now and into the future, ASU is launching a new medical school, creating two other new schools, expanding its alliance with Mayo Clinic and others, and more. ASU Health will transform how health care is designed, delivered and measured while also producing new physicians, nurses, technologists, scientists — all the groups that need to be focused on Arizona’s health.

A program created by the ASU REACH institute and funded by the National Institute of Mental Health was demonstrated to reduce by 50% the incidence of major depression suffered by youths who become young adults after experiencing the death of a parent.

Largest grant in ASU history for X-ray laser

The National Science Foundation is awarding ASU $90.8 million in funding — the largest NSF research award in the university’s history — to support a fiveyear project to build the world’s first compact X-ray free electron laser, or CXFEL. It will allow scientists to observe biology’s molecular processes in detail — important for understanding health and advancing renewable energy research, quantum technologies and semiconductor research.

California Arizona

Growing our service to California

In 2022–23, ASU enrolled 22,700 Californians as undergraduate and graduate students at in-person campuses and online. In 2023, ASU expanded its footprint in Los Angeles, adding the ASU California Center Grand building, home to ASU FIDM, the university’s fashion program within the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. And ASU welcomed a new independent affiliate college, California College of ASU, offering liberal arts degrees in filmmaking, digital media and fashion.

The ASU California Center anchors an emerging education district in downtown LA, bringing together multiple universities to meet community need and increase access to education.

ASU Local has expanded to offer students at Long Beach City College a degree pathway to a fouryear degree program on their home campus. With a presence in Los Angeles, ASU Local partners with 116 California community colleges to make degree completion seamless. “

Partnerships with local schools to address teacher shortage

A team-teaching model addressing the biggest challenges in education ramped up to more schools across Arizona and the nation. Early data shows the new model results in higher reading levels and better algebra competency.

More nurses for Arizona

The Arizona Department of Health Services awarded the university with a $5.5M grant to support a 104-nurse cohort that started in 2023. This builds on the university’s five pathways to nursing degrees with options for students to learn in their home communities such as Lake Havasu, where possible.

Delivering reliable internet access

Sun Corridor Network, the Digital Equity Institute and ASU partnered to advance broadband access throughout Maricopa County.

ASU West Valley campus, a centerpiece of the fastgrowing West Valley, expanded to over 125 degree programs

ASU refined the campus name as part of its larger work with cities and towns as part of West Valley Forward. ASU also announced ambitious plans for expansion to keep up with the region’s rapid growth, breaking ground on new residential and academic buildings and welcoming three new schools to campus in 2023:

• School of Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, part of the W. P. Carey School of Business

• School of Integrated Forensics, part of the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences

Sun Devil Athletics

• #1 in the Pac-12, Sun Devil Athletics scored the highest average multiyear Academic Progress Rate from 2018–22 for the second year in a row.

• Léon Marchand set NCAA record times, beat Michael Phelps’ world record and led Men’s Swimming to second-place NCAA title.

• Triathlon won its seventh straight national team championship title.

• Turner Washington won the discus to close his career, his fifth NCAA title.

• Women’s Tennis posted its first undefeated home season.

• Sun Devils had a record number (11) of CSC Academic All-Americans.

• Men’s Track and Field placed fifth at the NCAA Outdoor championships.

Preserving Arizona’s water

Working with industrial, municipal, agricultural, tribal and international partners, the Arizona Water Innovation Initiative, launched in 2023, will deploy new approaches and technology for water conservation, desalination, infrastructure and reuse.

A new method for removing forever chemicals developed; PFAS contaminate the drinking water of more than 60% of the country’s population.

New $50M clean hydrogen facility

A Clean-Seas and ASU project moved forward. It will bring a clean hydrogen facility — the first of its kind — to Arizona, which will use plastic destined for the landfill to create the hydrogen.

$70M to help reduce industrial fossil fuels

The U.S. Department of Energy selected ASU to establish a new Clean Energy Manufacturing Innovation Institute devoted to reducing greenhouse gas emissions emitted during industrial processes.

ASU to launch medical school

The new school is part of a comprehensive new effort to help improve health outcomes across Arizona. Helping improve the health of all Arizonans requires innovation in education. The Anatomage Table, shown on the cover, is a technologically advanced 3D anatomy visualization system, helps students master medical knowledge and skills more quickly.
