NEW BEYOND DOWNTOWN FALL
Arizona Opera’s new “Beyond Downtown” program will bring operatic performances throughout Arizona in the fall and spring, reaching beyond the walls of the theaters in which the company typically performs.
Among the fall offerings is The Coyotes and the Rabbits by Héctor Armienta, produced in partnership with San Jose-based Ópera Cultura. This one-act bilingual opera, inspired by Mexican folklore and suitable for all ages, humorously explores themes of cunning and survival as it tells the tale of a clever rabbit outsmarting a hungry coyote.
Also featured will be The Tell-Tale Heart by Gregg Kallor. A chilling one-act opera based on Edgar Allen Poe’s classic short story, this program is a unique twist on the traditional haunted house experience. While the narrator descends into madness, delve into this psychological horror accompanied by a spine-tingling score and eerie atmosphere.
The final entry for Beyond Downtown fall is Opera Shots, in partnership with Chandler Opera Company. Through Opera Shots, performers bring opera to unexpected venues such as bars, restaurants, and shopping malls courtesy of lively pop-up performances for all to enjoy.

AT ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY

TUCSON | HOLSCLAW HALL
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA
THURS | APR 3, 2025 | 7 PM
We are thrilled to present celebrated tenor Stephen Costello in recitals to be performed in both Tempe and Tucson, at Arizona State University and The University of Arizona. Costello, who led the cast of The Metropolitan Opera’s production of La Bohème last season and who returns to The Met next year in the company’s premiere of Moby Dick, will be accompanied by pianist Anthony Manoli in a program that will include an enthralling mix of both songs and arias.
These recitals are an exciting expansion of the company’s long-standing partnership with the Tucson Desert Song Festival, which has made it possible to bring some of today’s most sought-after artists to perform in Arizona Opera’s birth city. New this year, Arizona Opera brings this series to Arizona State University (ASU) in collaboration with ASU’s School of Music, Dance and Theatre.
Part of the Tucson Desert Song Festival.
STEPHEN COSTELLO has been hailed as ‘a prodigiously gifted singer whose voice makes an immediate impact’ (Associated Press). The Philadelphia-born tenor quickly established a reputation as a ‘first-class talent’ (Opera News) after coming to national attention in 2007, when, aged 26, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut on the company’s season-opening night. Two years later, Costello won the prestigious Richard Tucker Award, and he has since appeared at many of the world’s most important opera houses and music festivals, including the Royal Opera House, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Wiener Staatsoper, Opéra national de Paris, Deutsche Staatsoper, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Semperoper Dresden, Bayerische Staatsoper, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Hamburgische Staatsoper, San Francisco Opera, Washington National Opera, Bolshoi Theatre Moscow, Arena di Verona, Salzburger Festspiele, Bregenzer Festspiele, and Glyndebourne Festival. As Opera News noted in a recent ‘Spotlight’ double-page spread, ‘the all-American tenor’ is now ‘at the top of his game’.
AIDA
Music by Giuseppe Verdi, Libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni
Verdi’s Epic Tale of Forbidden Love Comes to Life as You’ve Never Experienced It Before
The splendor of Egypt comes to life through this visually arresting, projection-based concert production of Verdi’s Aida in its first Arizona Opera performances in over a decade. Featuring some of the most breathtaking music in the operatic repertoire, Aida tells the story of forbidden love amidst political intrigue and war. As the looming shadow of war envelops the sands of Egypt, Princess Aida confronts the challenges posed by a web of love, loyalty, and betrayal.
