Arizona in September is still hot. Remember, you’re in the desert. But which one? Located in America’s Southwest Region, the Grand Canyon State boasts four unique deserts within its borders. Sonoran Desert The Sonoran Desert covers southwestern Arizona, including the cities of Phoenix, Tucson, and Yuma. Maintaining warm temperatures year round, it’s one of the hottest deserts of the US. Despite the sparse amounts of precipitation during the year, the desert is home to a diverse population of flora and fauna because it has two rainy seasons a year. The Sonoran Desert is the only place in the world where the saguaro cactus (top photo) grows in the wild.
HERE COMES SANTA
Mojave Desert Northwestern Arizona contains part of the Mojave Desert, which is at a higher altitude than the Sonoran Desert. The boundaries of the Mojave Desert can be determined by the presence of the Yucca palm, which is endemic to the desert. Unlike the Sonoran Desert, the Mojave Desert has few trees, both in number and diversity. Painted Desert The Painted Desert (bottom photo) is a broad area of badlands located on the Colorado Plateau in Northern Arizona. It stretches from north of Cameron, near the Grand Canyon, to just beyond the Petrified Forest. It derives its name from the colored sediments and bentonite clay seen from its Chinle rock formation, left exposed by erosion. In the southern portion, the remains of a Triassic period coniferous forest have fossilized over millions of years. Chihuahuan Desert A small portion of southeastern Arizona is part of the Chihuahuan Desert. Because of its higher elevation in comparison to the Sonoran Desert, it tends to have milder temperatures during the summer. If you wish to explore the deserts, remember these five important tips. 1) Bring plenty of water. 2) Hike early. 3) Never hike alone. 4) Wear sunscreen and protective clothing. 5) Let someone know your plans and when you expect to return. The Prescott Area Artists’ Studio Tour is an annual celebration of the arts and the artists in the Prescott Quad-City area. Use the information available on the web site, www.nps.gov/grca/, to help plan your visit. Once you arrive in the park, read The Guide and talk with the rangers for up-to-the-minute information. Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night. The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently. Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March. Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a worryfree way to explore the developed areas of the rim. 70
The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway suitable for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon. Rangers present programs—walks, talks, and evening presentations—throughout the year. All activities are free. Check in The Guide for programs during your stay. VISITOR CENTERS The National Park Service staffs several visitor centers on the South Rim. All are open every day of the year; hours vary seasonally. Grand Canyon Visitor Center Located near Mather Point The largest visitor center on the South Rim is a good stop for an introduction to Grand Canyon and for assistance in planning your visit.
