M
onument Valley in northeastern Arizona is one of the most iconic geologic formations in the southwest and has been featured in many forms of media since the 1930s. Director John Ford used the location for a number of his best-known films, and thus, in the words of critic Keith Phipps, “its five square miles have defined what decades of moviegoers think of when they imagine the American West.”
Monument Valley is a region of the Colorado Plateau characterized by a cluster of vast sandstone buttes, the largest reaching 1,000 ft above the valley floor. The area is part of the Colorado Plateau. The elevation of the valley floor ranges from 5,000 to 6,000 feet above sea level. The floor is largely siltstone of the Cutler Group, or sand derived from it, deposited by the meandering rivers that carved the valley. The valley’s vivid red color comes from iron oxide exposed in the weathered siltstone. The darker, blue-gray rocks in the valley get their color from manganese oxide. The buttes are clearly stratified, with three principal layers. The lowest layer is the Organ Rock Shale, the middle is de Chelly Sandstone, and the top layer is the Moenkopi Formation capped by Shinarump Conglomerate. The valley includes large stone structures including the famed “Eye of the Sun”. The Mittens (top photo) buttes are among the most recognizable formations. Other formations such as the Three Sisters, Elephant Butte, and the Thumb are accessible via a A 17-mile scenic drive. The area features many trails, and guided and unguided hikes abound. While in the area, be sute to check out Antelope Canyon - one of the most colorful slot canyons in the US. Monument Valley is approximately 300 miles from Phoenix. Kayenta is a good starting point - take I-17 north to Flagstaff, I-40 to US 89 north, and then US 160 east to Kayenta. Tuba City also makes a nice home base, while Chinle is the closest community to Canyon de Chelly. Remember, the area surrounding Monumnet Valley is sparsely populated. Towns dot the landscape, but are far apart. Cell service is questionable - so be sure to bring plently of water, food, flashlight and emergency supplies just in case. AZ

Nature has provided Arizona with some of the most stunning vistas in the world. Visiting outdoor adventurers should add Canyon De Chelly (pronounced “shay”) to their must-see list. Canyon de Chelly National Monument was authorized in 1931 by President Herbert Hoover in large measure to preserve the important archeological resources that span more than 4,000 years of human occupation. The monument encompasses approximately 84,000 acres of lands located entirely on the Navajo Nation with roughly 40 families residing within the park boundaries.
HERE COMES SANTA
Millions of years of land uplifts and stream cutting created the colorful sheer cliff walls of Canyon de Chelly. Natural water sources and rich soil provided a variety of resources, including plants and animals that have sustained families for thousands of years. The Ancient Puebloans found the canyons an ideal place to plant crops and raise families. The first settlers built pit houses that were then replaced with more sophisticated homes as more families migrated to the area. More homes were built in alcoves to take advantage of the sunlight and natural protection. People thrived until the mid1300’s when the Puebloans left the canyons for better farmlands. Descendants of the Puebloans, the Hopi migrated into the canyons to plant fields of corn and orchards of peaches. Although the Hopi left this area to permanently settle on the mesa tops to the west, the Hopi still hold on to many of their traditions that are evident from their homes and kivas. Related to the Athabaskan people of Northern Canada and Alaska, the Navajo settled the Southwest between the four sacred mountains. The Navajo, or Dine’ as they call themselves, continue to raise families and plant crops just as the “Ancient Ones” had. The farms, livestock and hogans of the Dine’ are visible from the canyon rims. The Visitor Center is 3 miles (4.8 km) from Route 191 in Chinle, AZ. From Flagstaff, AZ, take I-40 East then Hwy 191 North. From Gallup, NM, take Hwy 264 West then Hwy 191 North. Visitors will also find several food options from concessions with quick, simple meals and tasty treats to the newly opened sit-down restaurant. This themed restaurant features soaring canyon walls and ancient ruins that allow diners to immerse themselves in the true spirit of the Southwest. There is also the Bears Den Gift Shop which offers unique gifts and souvenirs.

Soar It: Fort Bearizona is also the location of several amazing animal shows. Use the information available on the web site, www.nps.gov/grca/, to help plan your visit. Once you arrive in the park, read The Guide and talk with the rangers for up-to-the-minute information. Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night. The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently. Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March. Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a worryfree way to explore the developed areas of the rim. 70
The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway suitable for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon. Rangers present programs—walks, talks, and evening presentations—throughout the year. All activities are free. Check in The Guide for programs during your stay. VISITOR CENTERS The National Park Service staffs several visitor centers on the South Rim. All are open every day of the year; hours vary seasonally. Grand Canyon Visitor Center Located near Mather Point The largest visitor center on the South Rim is a good stop for an introduction to Grand Canyon and for assistance in planning your visit.

Q. Warmer weather brings out the wet questions: “ Where can we hike through streams of water?” And “Where can we wet our whistle?” A. Hikers and drinkers might disagree on the phrasing of Ben Franklin’s observation that “In wine there is wisdom…In beer there is freedom… and in water there is bacteria!” With a hop, skip and a splash, you can be in a cool hiking paradise anywhere in Arizona. Just bring along your wet shoes. And save the imbibing for later. Northern Central Arizona’s wet hikes sometimes go unheralded. The headwaters of West Clear Creek are a moderate hike with multiple watery trails near Strawberry, but has deep waters. It is a bigger commitment than the others mentioned in this article but this is its prime season for a dip into West Clear Creek. Another spot has various levels of difficulty with an easy 3-mile hike along the creek. Lots of shade and petroglyphs and clear pools for wading await these trail hikers. But beware as this is a canyon with steep descents and can be dangerous if wet.(Be careful.) Take Hwy 7 through Strawberry, then left on Hwy 200, right on Forest Rd. 144, left on Forest Rd. 149, right on Forest Rd. 142, Left on 142 E. and the trail is at the end of the road. If you’re in Payson you can get your happy on during Happy Hour at the popular Fargo’s Steakhouse Monday through Friday 3-6 p.m. in a quiet booth or join the sociables at the bar in this restaurant with a definite ski chalet atmosphere in the pines (928) 474-7455. A side note: their martini list has bragging rights in the area. This place is always busy, so enjoy the scenery and the courtyard. Seven Springs is an easy daytrip north of Phoenix in Central Arizona just 20 miles north of Carefree located along the ankle-deep waters of Cave Creek,framed with giant Sycamore and Cottonwood trees offering respite to wildlife and hikers alike. There isn’t enough water here for swimming unless you’re an Arizona Chub fish. Take Cave Creek north 24 miles, with the last stretch as dirt road. An easy hike! Two landmark watering holes in the area I recommend include: the Tortilla Flats Superstition Saloon east of Phoenix where Weaver’s Needle hikers can kick the dust off their boots, straddle a saddle barstool and hoist a tall cool beer ordering up some ribs and even take in a gunfight on the weekends at this former 1904 stagecoach stop (480) 984-1776; and for the shiny-shoes cocktail crowd The Blue Martini Lounge an upscale enclave with live music nightly northeast of Phoenix enshrines its famed drink of the same name while a variety of bands reward fans of Country, Alternative, Top 40’s, R & B or Latin sounds nightly. On a hike in Southern Arizona you hear the rushing water from a hidden waterfall deep in a canyon. No it’s not the Seven Falls Trail in Sabino Canyon (probably the most popular hiking spot and swimming hole in the area)—it’s a hidden waterfall deep in Madera Canyon where birding is lush on the north face of the Coronado National Forest. To find it, take I-19 south from Tucson toward Nogales for 20 miles. Take exit 63 at Continental Road in Green Valley turning left. In one mile, turn right onto Whitehouse Canyon Road, then keep right for Madera Canyon Road. Park at the first entry station. And walk 200 feet down the Proctor Trail pave path to an unpaved trail to the right. Follow that to a stream of water and the hidden waterfall. Taps across the State worked overtime during Arizona Beer Week this Spring which gave me a chance to try some craft beer in Tucson. I’m a big fan of Tucson’s downtown vibe and Tap & Bottle (520) 344-8999 has some of the most knowledgeable and gracious staff with a well-curated list of some 20 taps and 1 cask. The demographic is kinda hipster and 30-40 something. They are always hosting clever events including a Beer Mile and Beer Brunch! No food here on a regular basis but food trucks everywhere. Chef Emily Peterson, owns Beer Geek Bakery. Her specialty is making flavorful treats, things like mini-pies, cookie sandwiches and citrus bars, using beer from the breweries in which she’s selling. RESCUE 4 EXHIBIT at Hall of Flame Museum
T
he Hall of Flame Fire Museum is hosting an exhibit of special interest - Rescue 4, a survivor of the disaster at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The New York City Fire Department owned 5 rescue trucks on 9/11. A company served each of the city’s five boroughs. Rescue 4 served the Borough of Queens. It had a normal crew of 6 firefighters. Rescue company firefighters were the elite of FDNY firefighters with many years of experience on the job and trained in every phase of firefighting, including SCUBA and boat rescue tactics, sophisticated electric and hydraulic tools used to rescue the victims of auto accidents, building and bridge collapses, ditch cave ins and rescues from multi story buildings, basements roof rescues. When the North and South towers of the World Trade Center were hit by air liners all five rescue companies, together with dozens of other fire companies, responded. Rescue 4 had eight firefighters aboard. It arrived at the South Tower. All eight firemen entered the tower and began evacuating victims. When the building collapsed all eight men were killed. Most of the firemen in Rescues 1, 2, 3, and 5 were also killed. Rescue 4 suffered the least damage in the collapse of the towers. Rescue 1 and 2 were destroyed. Rescue 3 and 5 were badly damaged but were eventually restored to duty. Rescue 4 was New York’s only rescue rig for several weeks. It was in front line service until 2011, when it, together with Rescue 5, were retired to a junk yard. At this point a group of firefighters from the Chicago area established a foundation and purchased both rigs. They restored both in the Chicago area and sent them on tour to many towns and cities in the United States Hall of Flame Museum to educate the public about the 9/11 tragedy. 6101 East Van Buren Street Rescue 4 arrived at the Hall of Flame in January of this year and will be on Phoenix, AZ 85008 display through July. It is a 1996 HME/Saulsbury heavy rescue truck. It serves to 602-275-3473 compliment the Hall of Flame’s exhibit on 9/11, which recognizes all 343 FDNY HallofFlame.org firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11. AZ
