This Festival transports visitors to an European style fair filled with an agreeable rabble of knights, rogues, royalty and craftsmen, all roaming throughout a 30-acre village filled with delectable sights and sounds tantalizing the senses. All the Festival is a stage with a cast featuring more than 2,000 brightly costumed actors, dancers, mermaids, acrobats and musicians. The Renaissance Festival experience is meeting and interacting with a variety of colorful characters, shopping for unique arts and crafts, and taking in a selection of over 150 shows every event day. There is a great variety of food for feasting, and a bevy of beverages including Medieval Margaritas, Da Vinci Coladas, Dukes of Daiquiri, wine, honey mead, beers and ales, along with soft drinks and lemonade.

A popular attraction at the Festival are the live jousting tournaments held three times daily in the 5,000 seat arena, complete with knights on charging horses, clanging weapons and a great deal of braggadocio. PGA Tour golf returns to the Valley of the Sun for the 82nd playing of the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Presented by The Ak-Chin Indian Community, the tournament tees up January 30th through February 5th at TPC Scottsdale. Last year’s tournament shattered attendance records on Friday (160,415) and Saturday (201,003), pushing the weeklong attendance mark to 618,365 enthusiastic fans. A sea of golf buffs had a lot to be excited about, as fan-favorite, Rickie Fowler, took on eventual champion, Hideki Matsuyama, in a thrilling four-hole playoff for the title on Sunday just before sundown.

The 23rd Annual Sedona International Film Festival runs from February 18th through the 26th. Three-time Grammy Award winner Bruce Hornsby will open the 2017 Sedona International Film Festival with a performance on Saturday, Feb. 18 and five-time Grammy nominee Michael Feinstein will bring his Ira Gershwin Program and Great American Songbook to the Festival’s final weekend on Friday, Feb. 24.

The concerts are part of the festival’s nine-day celebration of the best independent cinema from around the world, which will feature nine incredible days of 160 films, including narrative features, documentaries, shorts, foreign films, Academy Award-nominees and specialty films. Established among the nation’s most sought-after independent film festivals by filmmakers and audience members, the Sedona International Film Festival brings more than 10,000 film lovers to Sedona’s world-famous red rocks.

hree-time Grammy Award winner Bruce Hornsby will open the 2017 Sedona International Film Festival with a performance on Saturday, Feb. 18 and five-time Grammy nominee Michael Feinstein will bring his Ira Gershwin Program and Great American Songbook to the Festival’s final weekend on Friday, Feb. 24. The concerts are part of the festival’s nine-day celebration of the best independent cinema from around the world, which will feature nine incredible days of 160 films, including narrative features, documentaries, shorts, foreign films, Academy Award-nominees and specialty films.

Established among the nation’s most sought-after independent film festivals by filmmakers and audience members, the Sedona International Film Festival brings more than 10,000 film lovers to Sedona’s world-famous red rocks.

Bruce Hornsby’s work displays a creative iconoclasm that’s been a constant in the artist’s two-and-a-half decade recording career. His commercial stock soared early on, when “The Way It Is”–the title track of his 1986 debut album–became one of the most popular songs on American radio.

Michael Feinstein has built a dazzling career over the last three decades bringing the music of the Great American songbook to the world. From recordings that have earned him five Grammy Award nominations to his Emmy nominated PBS-TV specials - his work as an educator and archivist define Feinstein as one of the most important musical forces of our time.

In addition to Hornsby and Feinstein, the 2017 Festival will feature a mid-week salute to Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Broadway. Terry Barber, a former member of the two-time Grammy Award winning group “Chanticleer”, sings songs that we all know and love from Broadway’s most famous shows, the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Use the information available on the web site, www.nps.gov/grca/, to help plan your visit. Once you arrive in the park, read The Guide and talk with the rangers for up-to-the-minute information.

Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night.

The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently.

Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March.

Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a worryfree way to explore the developed areas of the rim.

The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway suitable for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon.

Arizona is home to the only commercially-run amethyst mine in the U.S. Twenty miles north of Phoenix in the rugged Mazatzal Mountains of the Tonto National Forest, the Four Peaks Mine has been in operation since the early 1900s. And intriguingly, Spanish records reflect accounts of large shipments of amethyst from this Central Arizona lode in the 18th century.
