There are many ways to escape the searing August temperatures in Arizona. Some choose their localing watering hole, while others search out their favorite swimming hole. But for many, the answer lies in one direction - up. In an effort to help you stay cool, here are the Grand Canyon State’s Top Ten Highest Mountain Peaks.

Humphreys Peak (top photo) in the Coconino National Forest is the highest summit in Arizona. Part of the San Francisco Peaks, it is a volcanic mountain range 9 miles north of Flagstaff. It soars to 12,633 feet, and is one of the most prominent summits in the United States outside of the Rocky Mountains. The mountain is high enough to maintain snow cover in summer, when temperatures may not exceed 40 °F.

HERE COMES SANTA

Simply referred to as “Agassiz”, Agassiz Peak is Mount Humphreys’ sister peak and one of the San Francisco Mountains’ “Big 4”, or the top five highest peaks in Arizona. Its elevation is 12,356 feet.

At 11,946 feet, Fremont Peak is also located in the San Francisco Mountains. This summit is positioned along the Doyle Saddle, where it is not very prominent. Aubineau Peak, the fourth highest summit in Arizona, tops out at 11,818 feet. This is a fairly steep peak, and the home of the 2005 avalanche.

Ree’s Peak is a much smaller peak than most of the summits in the San Francisco mountains at 11,444 feet. This peak lacks alpine tundra but is home to the famed bristlecone pine, some of the oldest trees on the earth (middle photo). Doyle Peak rises to 11,440 feet, and can be seen as the summit most on the right, if you’re looking at the San Francisco Mountains from Flagstaff. It is known for its continuous aspen belt.

Mount Baldy, located in Arizona’s White Mountains on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, is an eroded mountain peak whose summit is 11,391 feet. Named by locals, it lacks trees on the upper ridge, giving it a baldlike appearance.

Mount Baldy is home to a bristlecone pine forest, and some consider the White Mountains as a Rocky Mountains extension due to similar averages in elevation, tree species, animals, and weather.

At 11,348 feet, Mount Ord is part of the White Mountains, and is located in Apache County on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. Snow often stays on this mountain the longest during summer due to its high elevation and gentle north slope. Rising to 11,148 feet, Paradise Butte is found in the White Mountains near Mount Baldy and Mount Ord, near Sunrise Ski Park. In Apache County, Mount Thomas completes the list at 11,121 feet.

State parks provide destinations for camping adventures without the need for a RV or tent. Cozy camping cabins are currently available at four state parks: Roper Lake State Park in Safford, AZ, Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood, AZ, and new cabins at Lyman Lake State Park near St. Johns, AZ and Alamo Lake near Wenden, AZ. The new cabins at Lyman Lake feature two rooms, a full size bed in the front room and bunk beds in the 18

back room. Two-room cabins also line the lake at Roper Lake State Park, which offers a plethora of recreational opportunities, including swimming. Dual bunk beds add to the versatility of the two-room cabins at Alamo Lake State Park. Perfect for group fishing trips. One-room camping cabins available at Dead Horse Ranch State Park are tucked away from the other campgrounds and make an ideal getaway for couples and groups.

Cabins are equipped with electricity and air-conditioning/heating. A picnic table and charcoal grill are located right outside of the front door of each cabin, and restrooms and showers are within walking distance. Campers should come prepared with their own Arizona State Parks linens, sleeping bags and pillows as well as the necessary items to prepare and eat meals.

Use the information available on the web site, www.nps.gov/grca/, to help plan your visit. Once you arrive in the park, read The Guide and talk with the rangers for up-to-the-minute information.

Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night.

The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently.

Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March.

Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a worryfree way to explore the developed areas of the rim.

The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway suitable for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon.

Rangers present programs—walks, talks, and evening presentations—throughout the year. All activities are free. Check in The Guide for programs during your stay.

VISITOR CENTERS The National Park Service staffs several visitor centers on the South Rim. All are open every day of the year; hours vary seasonally.

Grand Canyon Visitor Center Located near Mather Point The largest visitor center on the South Rim is a good stop for an introduction to Grand Canyon and for assistance in planning your visit.

Q. Where is your closest urgent care center, my son stepped on a bug…maybe a scorpion?

A. Sources report that our resort is so friendly, its leading cause of injury is complications arising from receiving hearty hugs from the staff! But if you are unfortunate enough to spend any time in an emergency room like I have recently, you realize that scorpion stings, brown recluse spider and snake bites as well as sunburns are non-discriminating, inflicting their poison on locals and visitors alike.

“It’s not going to happen to me,” is the thinking of most travelers when it comes to thinking about vacation accidents. That’s probably what ran through the mind of a Mrs. America pageant contestant several years ago at a local resort when she was bitten by a rattlesnake! Although there are 13 species of rattlesnakes in Arizona, most are not poisonous and few deaths have resulted from their bites.

Keep the bite lower than the heart, don’t cut or ice the wound and call the Arizona Poison Control and Drug Information Center for further instructions on snake and scorpion bites or possible food poisoning as well: 800-222-1222.

The more common health “inconveniences” not involving a trip to the Emergency Room, that concierges are often adept at networking are dental and eye care emergencies as well as lost or misplaced prescriptions. Also see the concierge for sun smart tips. Now that the quenching rains of August and our monsoon season are upon us, the temperatures have dropped somewhat in the desert, but being sun smart when the mercury is still daunting to visitors from cooler climates is a key to staying healthy around the state. Throbbing headaches, dizziness, seeing white stars and experiencing nausea are dangerous signs of heat stroke. There are typically over 120 cases from May to October statewide. Regularly apply SPF 30 sunscreen. Wear your sunglasses unless you can’t wait to have cataracts. Avoid foods with too much salt (causing dehydration.) Seek out fruits and vegetable (which contain a lot of water.) Drink plenty of water, more so with increased physical activity. Seek shade to avoid burns and heat rash. Wear light layers and fabrics that breathe. (Locals wear large-brimmed hats and wraparound sunglasses.)

While the need for medical evacuation is relatively rare, the circumstances under which it’s needed are unexpected—a serious roadway accident, heart attack, hiking, horseback riding or wildlife incidents or simply the worsening of an illness can be transformed into a medical emergency. In these cases the U.S. Embassy or foreign embassies are not your Mom and Dad. They are present largely to help you with passport issues, or evacuate you in the event of war or natural disasters. Ask

for the Manager on Duty (MOD), hotel security or your concierge when in need of assistance in summoning emergency care.

In Central Arizona, more specifically in the greater Phoenix area, you don’t have to put a kibosh on your trip hunting for a hospital or urgent care facility when seeking medical attention. Just call on Dr. Steven Lipsky who makes hotel and resort calls 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily providing a wide range of services including lab tests, immunizations and treatment for pain and illnesses.
