Inspiring positive life choices Every day in every school, our children and teens face a test, one that will have a major effect on their future.

Failure can have devastating results. However, it’s not a test of academics. It’s not a matter of math, history or science. It’s a matter of healthy vs. unhealthy choices. It’s a matter of life and death.

News headlines often tell of the results of these tests. We read about school violence, drug overdoses and suicide.

We learn about young lives that have been cut far too short by one bad decision. We look at the devastation and ask, “What can we do about it?”

Fifteen years ago, a Scottsdale couple, Debbie and Steve Moak, asked that same question. They had been dealing with their own son’s substance abuse issues, a problem that had blindsided them. As a loving, involved family with a child who was a scholar, athlete and student leader, they were shocked to realize that even they weren’t immune to the repercussions of negative youth behavior.

After helping their son overcome his struggles, they felt like their job wasn’t done. Debbie and Steve decided they were going to use the knowledge they had gained through their experience to better equip other families to avoid the same problems.

The Moaks joined forces with their son’s psychologist, Dr. Mark Rohde, to create the nonprofit organization notMYkid. With prevention as the focus, rather than intervention, they designed a unique “peer-to-peer” approach to provide both parents and their kids with firsthand, real-world knowledge and the courage necessary to prevent negative youth behaviors and inspire positive life choices. notMYkid maintains the same approach today, and has now grown to serve schools, community groups, and places of worship all over Arizona. In order to better equip families to prevent negative youth behaviors, notMYkid now presents on six topics: Substance Abuse, Bullying, Internet Safety, Body Image, Unhealthy Relationships, and a combination topic of Depression/ Self-Injury/Suicide.

The Amplif(i) program (designed for 5th-12th grade students) has Young adult Peer Educators who have overcome destructive behaviors and are now living healthy, productive lives share their personal stories. Along with their personal story, the Peer Educators teach the students 14

a variety of healthy coping mechanisms and communication tools, and provide them with behavioral health resources.

Students surveyed after the presentations have said they were inspired, encouraged, informed, and better prepared to face life’s challenges that come their way.

Parent and Faculty workshops are taught by educators that are comprised of behavioral health professionals, law enforcement officers and other relevant professionals.

Parent and Faculty presentations include the latest information on warning signs, related studies and statistics, prevention techniques, and the best ways to begin healthy and consistent dialogue with children and teens. Each onehour presentation contains information and tools that have the potential to save lives.

“Parents today are looking for anything that can help keep their children safe from harm,” says notMYkid CEO Aimee Runyon. “notMYkid’s parent education classes equip parents with the skills necessary to implement a successful family prevention plan and ensure the safety of their kids.”

During the 2014-15 school year, the organization hosted presentations in 336 schools and community groups throughout Arizona. notMYkid now reaches over 100,000 students, parents, and faculty members annually with its message of “Positive Life Choices.”

Hyenas are often misunderstood and feared. Their portrayal in pop culture probably perpetuates their reputation as a dark, loathsome animals. But, nothing is farther from the truth.

Hyenas, like the baby-striped female on display at Wildlife World's baby animal nursery serve an invaluable role in Nature.

Once found throughout northern Africa, the Middle East and much of western Asia, the striped hyena is now only found in small isolated populations due to misguided efforts to eradicate the "pest." As scavengers and hunters, hyenas help ensure that weak and sick animals are removed from wild populations of gazelles, antelope and other prey animals. In doing so, they also provide feeding opportunities for other species of animals.

Striped hyenas are smaller and form smaller social groups than the spotted species on display at the Wildlife World Safari Park.

Underage Drinking a Sobering Issue in Arizona COPE Coalition works to curb teen drinking in Maryvale It’s officially summer. And as most teens are texting friends, finding ways to stay cool and working summer jobs, it’s also time for the annual spike in underage drinking. In fact, more teens take their first sip of alcohol during the summer months than any other time of year according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

But in Maryvale, the COPE Coalition, operated by health care organization Terros, is taking action to put an end to underage drinking in the west Phoenix community.

Throughout Arizona, nearly a quarter of a million underage youths drink alcohol every year, and one in five reports having had their first drink before 13 years old, according to the National Underage Drinking Enforcement Training Center.

“Some parents think it’s harmless fun for their teen to occasionally drink alcohol,” says Torre Valentine, Terros prevention manager. “But underage drinking is anything but harmless.”

Studies show adolescents who begin drinking alcohol before the age of 15 are five times more likely to develop alcohol dependence or abuse later in life than their peers who wait until the legal age of 21 to take their first sip.

“The COPE Coalition hosts programs throughout the year to teach teenagers the dangers of underage drinking,” says Elizabeth Arendt, Terros community development coordinator. “One of the highlights of our summer is the Quinceañera Sin Alcohol Program.”

The 2015 Quinceañera program began in June and will culminate in a coming of age party for the participants in September. Beautiful ball gowns, hair styling, makeup and other necessities for the big day are all donated by area merchants.

Quinceañeras are a rite of passage for young girls in the Latino community. But for many young women, the event also is celebrated with heavy drinking among friends and family members in attendance.

“I wanted to be a Quinceañera Sin Alcohol participant to show other teens that they don’t need alcohol to have fun at a party,” says 2013 participant Marlene Ayala.

The Drug-Free Communities Support Program, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), in collaboration with COPE Coalition, have been sponsoring the alcohol-free event since 2009.

Prior to the Quinceañera Sin Alcohol event, the young women and their parents participate in eight weeks of classes. In addition to discouraging underage drinking, the classes are designed to improve communication between teens and their parents and teach about self-esteem, dating violence, teen pregnancy and the roles of fathers, among other important issues.

“Preventing underage drinking starts at home,” Arendt says. “That’s why we require the parents of Quinceañera participants to attend all eight classes with their daughters and focus so much on communication between parents and teens.”

A few tips for parents to help reduce underage alcohol use are: 1. Be a role model. If you choose to drink, drink responsibly.

2. Talk about the dangers of drinking. Have open conversations about the effects of alcohol throughout your child’s life.

3. Be actively involved in your child’s life. A close, supportive relationship with your child will make him or her more likely to delay drinking.

4. Know your child’s friends. Good friends support good choices.

5. Supervise all parties to ensure there is no alcohol. Create an environment that teaches your children they don’t need alcohol to have fun.

Arthritis in Children Aches and pains are a widely accepted side effect of aging.

Over time, bones can become more brittle and cushioning tissues between joints can deteriorate. But while arthritis and pain are often associated with the elderly, young people, including children can experience arthritis as well.

According to the Arthritis Foundation, juvenile arthritis or JA, comes in many forms and affects nearly 300,000 children. JA is an umbrella term used to classify a variety of diseases affecting the joints and musculoskeletal systems in children. Juvenile lupus, juvenile idiopathic arthritis (also known as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis), juvenile dermatomyositis, and Kawasaki disease are just a few of the conditions that fall under the JA umbrella.

Unlike adults, who may develop arthritis from years of wear and tear on the body, kids with JA can often trace their condition to genetics. JA also is an autoimmune disease in which the body's natural immune system ends up attacking its own cells by mistake when something goes awry. With arthritis, the attack can result in pain, inflammation and fever.

Juvenile arthritis can cause persistent joint pain, swelling and stiffness. The Mayo Clinic says that some children with arthritis also develop serious complications, such as growth problems or eye inflammation, and JA may affect the skin and gastrointestinal tract.

Arthritis is typically a lifelong condition. Although flareups may last a few days or weeks, those with arthritis can usually expect their symptoms to persist throughout their lives. This can be especially challenging for children who are not mature enough to understand their condition.

Furthermore, JA can be easily overlooked by doctors who are not used to seeing young patients with arthritis.

Parents who learn to recognize the symptoms of JA may be able to identify the condition before their children's doctors, and that early detection can help kids better cope with the discomfort and pain caused by their condition.

Stiffness: Children with JA may be particularly stiff in the morning.

Pain: Kids who complain of pain right after waking up rather than after a day of physical activity may be exhibiting signs of JA. Pain may dissipate as children begin moving.

Swelling: Redness and swelling around the joints is an indication of inflammation. This swelling may come and go or persist for several days.

Fever: Sudden fevers not linked to any respiratory or stomach ailments may be indicators of JA.

Fatigue: JA can cause children to be more tired than usual. Fatigue also can affect eating and sleeping patterns.

If a pediatrician suspects JA, he or she likely will recommend a visit to a pediatric rheumatologist, who will then take a complete health history to determine the type of symptoms present and the length of time those symptoms have been present. Laboratory work, x-rays and other imaging tests will rule out other conditions, but no test can definitively say if a child is or is not suffering from JA. There is no cure for arthritis. The goal of treatment is to reduce pain and inflammation and improve quality of life.

A combination of medications, physical therapy, and healthy eating are usually prescribed to ease symptoms.

Medications may be anti-inflammatory drugs as well as biologics, which put the disease into remission and prevent the body's immune system from attacking the body further. Several different treatment plans may be tried until the right combination is found.

Weight management and healthy eating can help a child with JA prevent further joint damage as he or she ages.

Physical activity, including low-impact exercises that take the stress off knees or hips, also are good for the joints, and can improve strength and flexibility.

Add Health Screenings to Back-toSchool Checklist As summer vacation winds down, thoughts turn from jaunts to the beach to readying for a new school year. Todo lists include many of the typical tasks that precede going back to the classroom, including shopping for new clothes, purchasing school supplies and finishing summer reading assignments. Another essential requirement parents must find time for is completing their children's health screenings and immunizations so youngsters can return to school.

Health screenings may include, but may not be limited to, routine physical exams, eye exams and dental cleanings.

Each school district may have its own set of health requirements that must be met in order for children to attend school.

Many schools require that children are up-to-date with all immunizations before they can begin a new school year.

While the issue of vaccinations has inspired debate in recent years, parents should recognize that many schools will only exempt students from receiving certain vaccinations due to religious reasons. Students who have specific learning disabilities or

medical conditions that require classroom modification

All parents may want to ask doctors to provide copies of medical and immunization records so that schools will have the most recent copies on file.

Parents should schedule eye examinations well in advance of the first day of school so they have ample time to fill new prescriptions for youngsters before school begins.

Parents of adolescents or students on the verge of adolescence may want to address the subject of bodily changes before the school year begins anew. Address changes that can be expected, including the start of menstruation for girls. Explaining Sensory Processing Disorder Educators and parents must now be more cognizant about the various needs of their students and children. The lines between certain learning disabilities and conditions are not always easy to decipher, and this is especially true with a condition known as sensory processing disorder.

Sensory processing disorder, sometimes-referred to as sensory integration dysfunction, involves the way the nervous system receives messages from the senses and transforms them into appropriate motor functions and behavioral responses. When a child has SPD, his or her sensory signals are not organized into appropriate responses. This can present challenges when performing everyday tasks, says the Sensory Processing Disorder Foundation. Clumsiness with regard to motor skills, behavioral problems, difficulties in school and anxiety are just some of the conditions that may result from SPD if no treatment is sought.

A person with SPD may find clothing, physical contact, or some sort of sensory input, like light or sound, to be uncomfortable, while another may under respond to certain stimulation, such as not reacting quickly enough to pain. Others with SPD may not have adequate motor skills, leading them to consistently fall or trip. Some people with SPD overly seek out stimulation and sensation to a point where they are often misdiagnosed with ADHD. Identifying and understanding SPD is essential; as such, an understanding can mean the difference between getting the right treatment or being misdiagnosed. Some people with SPD are medicated for other issues, when SPD really is the cause of their problems.

SPD is most common in children, although it can occur in adults. The exact cause of the condition, and other neurodevelopmental disorders, has not been entirely identified. Doctors believe SPD is often inherited and SPD causes are ingrained in DNA. Prenatal and birth complications also have been implicated, and environmental factors may be involved. However, researchers believe SPD is the result of factors that are both genetic and environmental.

An accurate diagnosis of SPD means that most children will be treated with some form of occupational therapy.

Listening therapy and other therapies may be combined.

Therapy may take place in a sensory-rich location that is challenging but fun. Additional support may be needed in the classroom for school-aged children. Because kids with SPD have brains that are wired differently, they may require different approaches to learn their lessons. The disorder does not make them any less intelligent; it just means lessons need to be tailored to meet their needs.

The best course of action is to ask a doctor to conduct tests to determine if a child has SPD. Research shows that families who work together with educators, therapists and other family members have the highest levels of success with regard to making life easier for someone with sensory processing disorder. A child may not exhibit all signs of SPD, but the list can be a good starting point for conversations with a doctor.

Tips for a Healthy School Year

Students are most likely to get sick when school starts because being at school put children's immune systems to the test, offers The Mayo Clinic. Young children who are in close proximity to others in large groups tend to spread organisms like bacteria and viruses that cause illness.

Breaking the cycle can take some work, but it's possible to make this a healthy school year.

Encourage handwashing. Handwashing habits are

essential for school-aged children and should be taught as soon as possible. Children should wash their hands after they use the bathroom and before they eat. If they've been playing outside or have interacted with children who are sick, handwashing can help remove some of the germs lingering on their hands.

Stop (some) sharing. Sharing develops good manners and can foster new friendships. But children should be discouraged from sharing food, drinks and other personal items. Once the item has been placed in a child's mouth, it should not be shared.

Take a sick day. When kids get sick, keep them at home.

Schools may have guidelines indicating when it is acceptable for children to return to school, and it's important that parents adhere to those guidelines so illnesses cannot spread around the school.

Promote adequate sleep and nutrition. While adults

may need between seven and nine hours of sleep a night, children often require more. The National Sleep Foundation recommends eight to 13 hours of sleep a night for schoolaged children. Begin adjusting sleep schedules during the latter part of summer vacation so that children can readjust to their regular sleep schedules.

Parents also should feed kids nutritious diets consisting of a variety of foods. Avoid high-calorie junk foods, reserving such items only as special treats every so often.

Donate cleaning supplies. Some schools may be

underfunded and may not have enough supplies to keep all of the classrooms and surfaces clean. Parents can help by donating cleaning wipes and sprays so that students and teachers can thrive in clean, healthy environments. azhealthandliving.com |July 2015

Seven Steps to the Development of Your Inner Elegance: 1. Mindfulness: In order to find and express your inner elegance, you first have to envision yourself as an elegant person. To start this change, you have to begin thinking of yourself in the way in which you wish to be perceived.

Once you start this thought process, everything else will fall into place.

2. Grace: When you think about displaying an inner elegance, gracefulness is one of qualities to express this.

When you are graceful, you move slowly, have a positive but quiet confidence about your aura and you think and speak with poise, charm, dignity and beauty. You are deliberate in who you are without being pushy.

3. Self-Control: Do not have tantrums or play emotional games. You do not need to manipulate to get what you want. Being in control and owning who you are is what draws love and opportunities to you. When you show you have self-control and are emotionally intelligent, you are viewed as smart and smart is sexy.

Character-Building Techniques for Parents with Teens Parents today contend not only with yesterday’s worries – drug abuse, bullying, teenage sex and with delinquency – but new challenges. The digital age has introduced adult predators and other online hazards, and body altering decorating such as tattoos and piercings are popular temptations.

The teenage years are unlike any other in a person’s life – it’s a unique in-between period from childhood to adulthood, and it’s helpful to remember that problems during this time are actually normal. But teens still require guidance, encouragement, and good ideas to see them through to adulthood.

A universally admired trait, spanning all cultures, religion and philosophy, is compassion. A truly compassionate teen will inevitably have a host of other positive qualities, including patience, understanding, sensitivity, tolerance, intuition and more. Parents can encourage compassion in the following ways:

Model it: Compassion is largely learned, so be aware of how you act around your children. How did you respond to the request for money from that panhandler on the street? What comment did you make behind his back, in the presence of your kid? What did you say about that idiot driver who just cut you off in traffic? Your teens are watching and listening.

Notice it: Point out examples of compassion that occur around you. It comes in many forms. Relevant to our daily lives are the people who quietly, and without recognition, help others in need, including volunteers of all types. Make a game of identifying instances of compassionate deeds you’ve witnessed.

Teach it: Compassion has to be taught, so be prepared to provide direct instruction on how your teen needs to think and act in order to develop that quality. One important component is empathy. If your teens can’t see things from another’s perspective, it is difficult for them to appreciate what that person is going through.

Skills Adolescents Need for Successful & Satisfying Life Teenagers spend a good chunk of their learning time immersed in such subjects as algebra, history, biology and geography.

But the march toward a successful and satisfying adulthood involves more than the ability to add numbers or read and analyze complex material.

Equally vital are skills that help young people develop character and give them the courage and fortitude to deal with the many challenges life will throw at them.

During the physical, emotional, and intellectual explosions of the adolescent years, it’s critical that teenagers develop a belief in their own ability to succeed.

People who truly believe they can perform well are more likely to view difficult tasks as something to be mastered rather than something to be avoided.

Skills and values that help lead adolescents to a more satisfying life can range from respecting their parents to understanding that making mistakes is part of life. Here are just five of the many skills that can make a difference.

Learn to listen. The willingness to listen is a direct reflection of how much we value each other, and being listened to reduces stress. Nothing teaches young people more about how to become good listeners than having a mentor or other adult who consistently and intently listens to them. The ability to listen with intention and compassion creates and enhances qualities like curiosity, empathy and altruism.

Understand and manage stress. It’s essential that young people understand the role stress plays in their lives and the difference between healthy and unhealthy outlets for handling that stress. Healthy outlets for stress include exercise, talking, creative pursuits, and venting anger through words and exercise in safe environments. Unhealthy outlets include withdrawing and bottling up feelings, overeating or restricting food, violent behavior, relying on passive activities like TV and video games, alcohol and drug use, premature sexual activity and blaming others.

Embrace anger. Young people (and perhaps adults as well) who want to achieve success often try to keep a lid on negative emotions. For inner-city students that instinct is especially understandable because acting on angry impulses raises the risk of getting hurt in the neighborhood or can be a threat to fragile relationships at home. Yet, young people find relief when they are given permission to appropriately vent their anger and frustration. They consistently feel better when their mentors help them talk about rather than swallow their frustrations.

Reject the victim mentality. Many young people struggle at times with feeling like victims. That especially can be the case for those growing up in poverty. In truth, they often are victimized. They may live in a dangerous neighborhood with highly stressed and single parent families, and every day they are confronted with the harsh realities of poverty. The challenge is for young people to separate their experience of literally being a victim from the tendency to develop a victim mentality. They can’t control the former, but they can control the latter.

Value humor. Adolescents are turned off by sarcasm from adults, but they have a great appreciation for humor.

If a mentor and a student can start poking fun at each other, the friendly teasing can lead to a closer and more trusting relationship. Learning to laugh at oneself is an important skill for us all.

The results of another study of Stochastic Vestibular Stimulation, published in the journal Brain Stimulation demonstrated improved balance and movement in Parkinson’s patients. In this therapy, random stimulation of the inner ear (the vestibular system) helped improve balance and also showed some ability to improve bradykinesia and slowed movement. Cueing and vestibular stimulation are simple techniques that can be applied during rehabilitation.

Q. What are the newest arrivals to Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park?

A. It has been more than a decade since Arizona's only penguins successfully reared a chick. Currently, a young adult pair is raising not one but two! The aquarium at Wildlife World has been home to endangered Blackfooted penguins for many years; however, until recently most of the one dozen adults on display were too young and inexperienced for parenthood. All that has changed with the hatching of two chicks. Like many other species of birds, penguins usually stagger the laying of (two) eggs over several days to better insure at least one chick survives.

How to Keep Connected Kids Safe The popularity of mobile devices and smartphones has produced more tech-savvy kids. Based on a 2013 survey by Scratch Wireless, nearly one in five kids use a mobile device every day. Other children regularly go online through tablets, laptops and home PCs. Connectivity is ever more in reach - and often outside of the watchful eyes of parents and other caregivers.

Although statistics vary, Symantec, maker of Norton Internet Security software, estimates that at least 20 percent of kids will receive harassing, hateful or insulting messages via the Internet. That's not the only hazard of browsing the Internet. According to the Journal of Adolescent Health, 65 percent of online sex offenders use social networking sites to gain home and school information about their victims and 82 percent of online sex crimes against minors originate from online social information.

The Internet also can put children in touch with ageinappropriate media content and pornographic or racy imagery. Mobile devices can provide a distraction for teenagers, which can be dangerous when used while they are driving.

While parents worry about their kids going online, smartphones enable families to stay readily in touch, and many students turn to the Internet for school assignments.

Parents who want to protect their youngsters from less reputable online elements can take certain measures to reduce the risk that their kids will come across questionable people and/or content when surfing the Internet.

Set up parental controls Parental and security controls are built into most devices that connect to the Internet. Parents can customize the settings, limiting what kids can and can't do on each particular device. Websites with questionable or adult content can be blocked, and location services or chatting may be turned off. Security settings also enable parents to set up passwords so that purchases can be prevented or that certain applications require entry of a password before they can be accessed.

Keep personal information to a minimum Whenever children and even adults create new online accounts or profiles, they should limit the amount of 44

personal information they provide. Try not to set up usernames that include full first and last names. Avoid any mention of birthdays, addresses, phone numbers and names of schools. Vague profiles protect user information and make it more difficult for online predators to target people.

Turn off geolocation services Many mobile apps use something called geolocation to automatically share a person's location with others. Other apps may require location information for maps or to provide directions or recommendations for businesses in the area. In addition, some photos taken with geolocation services activated may be geotagged, meaning the digital image is imprinted with a code that can tell others where it was taken. Location services can identify where a child is and put this information in the hands of people trolling for personal information online.

Use hotspots cautiously Wi-Fi hotspots provide free Internet connectivity when customers are at restaurants, parks or other areas with WiFi service available. Hotspots can be particularly attractive to kids with limited data plans. However, hotspots are less secure than home Internet connections, and Wi-Fi hotspot users are vulnerable to cyber criminals. Kids should never share personal information, account numbers, or other intimate details when using a hotspot.

Avoid compromising photos The "selfie" craze invites people from all over to post pictures of themselves on social media sites. While it can be fun to share images over the Internet, availability of photos can lead to trouble. Photos could give others clues to where kids go to school, work or live. Images posted while on vacation may alert others that someone is not home.

Compromising or suggestive photos can harm a child's reputation or even lead to exploitation. Stress to children that they should only take photos they would be willing to share with their parents and that they should keep posted photos to a minimum. Exercise caution whenever posting images, and rely on security measures to limit who can view those images.

Be on alert for malware A program or app may contain malware that steals information behind the scenes. Only download content that can be verified as valid. Free offers and email messages that advertise software for download or Web links should be avoided.

Don't interact with online strangers The Web puts many people who live all-around the world in instant contact with one another. Children should never send information or interact on a personal level with someone they do not know. Parents should stress the importance of avoiding strangers online just like they do when teaching kids to avoid strangers in public.

The Internet has changed the way parents must safeguard their children from dangers in the world. Practicing common sense and employing safety measures and software can limit kids’ vulnerability to the dangers that lurk online.

Teen Heroin Use on the Rise No parent wants to imagine his or her child engaging in recreational drug use, but suburban areas are experiencing a noticeable uptick in heroin usage among teenagers.

Once deemed a "city drug," heroin is now infiltrating suburban hamlets, where more and more children are experimenting with this potentially deadly drug.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, initiations to heroin have increased 80 percent among 12- to 17-year-olds since 2002. What's more, young people are dying from heroin in greater numbers than in years past. In 1999, 198 Americans between the ages of 15 and 24 died from a heroin overdose. That figure will rise to about 510 by 2099.

Parents may wonder why teens are turning to heroin.

Officials suspect the cost of the drug and its addictive properties are behind the increase. Some feel that prescription drug abuse has fueled the rise in heroin addiction, as adolescents who first experimented with prescription pain pills to get high are now switching to heroin, which is cheaper and more accessible.

Crackdowns on prescriptions for oxycodone and other similar opioid-driven pain pills have driven up the street price of these drugs. Prescription pain pills can cost anywhere from $20 to $60 each or $1 per milligram, figures that quickly add up among addicts who need more and more of the drug to achieve the same high. By contrast, 1 gram of heroin can cost around $50. Some heroin can cost between $3 and $10 per bag. Addicts can buy heroin for roughly 10 percent of the cost of prescription drugs while experiencing a similar or even more intense high.

In scores of interviews with former heroin addicts, NBC News reported that nearly all reported getting addicted in the same way. They started with prescription drugs they purchased from friends, and when they became too addicted to afford the number of pills they needed to get high, they switched to heroin because it was more affordable.

But this isn't the only way teens are getting addicted to heroin. Drug traffickers are specifically marketing heroin to suburban teens, using popular brand logos on small drug packets and giving away free samples of heroin to kids, only to return and sell it once those same kids become hooked.

Heroin can be snorted, smoked or injected, but many teenagers begin by snorting or smoking the drug. After that, many move on to injecting heroin because this is said to produce a more potent high. Heroin begins to affect the body's central nervous system almost immediately. A feeling of euphoria will come over users, and they can feel heavy in the arms or legs. After the initial rush, an alternating state of wakefulness and then drowsiness, sometimes referred to as "on the nod," occurs. Heroin can also dull pain, and some users rely on heroin to selfmedicate with heroin.

Because heroin suppresses the central nervous system, various functions of the body begin to slow down, including pulse and breathing rates. Overdosing on heroin can quickly result in death if a person is not revived.

Injection of adrenaline may be needed to counteract the effects of a heroin overdose. Unfortunately, since many people isolate themselves when using heroin, those who overdose often do not receive help in time.

Treatment for heroin addiction Heroin users can get hooked quite quickly. Parents of teenagers who are using the drug may be told that a combination of medical and psychological therapy can help their kids fight their addictions. Both approaches help to restore a degree of normalcy to brain function and behavior.

It can be difficult for families to recognize heroin addiction, and confronting addicts can be both difficult and heartbreaking. But intervention can help heroin addicts curtail their addiction before it quickly spirals out of control. Parents can seek more information from a drug treatment facility if they suspect their child has an addiction to heroin or another opiate.

How Parents Can Simplify Students to College Life College is the first taste of true independence many young students experience. Whereas mom and dad were always around to make sure kids were out the door on time and homework was done, that safety blanket is no longer there once kids move into their dorm rooms.

The transition to college life can be exciting. But while students typically welcome that transition with open arms, parents often worry about how their children will handle their suddenly more independent life. Parents who want to help their kids make as smooth a transition to college life as possible can take steps during their children's senior year of high school to help them adjust to their new surroundings and responsibilities more easily.

Let kids fly solo on school day mornings. A new college student have to make many adjustments upon moving into their dorms, and getting themselves out of bed each morning and off to class on time is one such change. Parents worried that their students will sleep in when mom and dad isn't around to remind them to wake up can start letting kids fly solo on school day mornings during their final year of high school. Let kids set their alarms, prepare their own breakfasts, and get out the door on time all on their own. By the time their first year of college arrives, kids will know how to handle their mornings by themselves.

Teach kids how to develop budgets. Another problem many first-year college students encounter is an inability to effectively manage their money. Whether you plan to give kids an allowance while they are in school or intend for them to work part-time for their spending money, use senior year of high school as an opportunity to show kids how to budget their money. If they don't have accounts already, open bank accounts in your youngster's name, and insist that he or she start paying for his or her expenses via these accounts. Resist the urge to give high school kids gas money or money for shopping trips if they have already spent their allowances so they can learn how to effectively manage money between paydays. In addition, teach kids about the right and wrong ways to use credit cards, including the importance of paying balances in full and on time.

Let kids handle more standard responsibilities.

Adults tend to take more mundane responsibilities like making doctor's appointments or grocery shopping for granted. But kids likely have no idea how to handle such tasks. Parents can encourage their high school seniors to make their own medical appointments. In addition, take kids along on grocery shopping trips, explaining how to find sale items and which foods to buy and which to avoid.

Nutrition is not always foremost on the minds of college freshmen, but those who understand the importance of healthy diets are more likely to buy nutritious meals than junk food.

Emphasize time management. Today's high schoolers are busier than ever before, so many may already be prepared for the juggling act that is college life. But college students have more free time than their high school counterparts, so parents can emphasize the importance of managing that free time wisely as opposed to spending it lounging on the couch or napping.

Understanding IEPs

Individualized education programs, or IEPs, are a term used to describe the goals educators and parents establish for children to ensure those youngsters' achieve academic success. Required under a federal law called the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), IEPs serve as legal documents that spell out kids' learning needs and the services the school will provide to meet those needs. IEPs also may include information on how progress will be measured and documented. Roughly, 13 percent of students in the United States participate in IEPs. IEPs can include a variety of information and education models. An IEP may include: · The child's present level of performance · Educational goals · What the school will provide to help the student reach goals · Modifications and accommodations the school will adhere to · Any accommodations that will be offered during standardized testing · Timelines of when progress will be measured Students must be evaluated to determine their IEP eligibility. Professionals may diagnose students with specific learning disabilities. Such a diagnosis is made outside the school and then discussed with school personnel. School counselors or psychologists may give children various tests and observe them in the classroom setting.

After an evaluation has been completed, the IEP team, including parents and school officials, will determine if a student qualifies for an IEP. Parents must consent to an IEP before it is implemented. Many students with ADHD, autism, hearing impairment, dyslexia, cognitive challenges, and developmental delays benefit from IEPs. It's important for parents to maintain frequent contact with teachers to ensure the IEP is being followed and to get periodic progress reports. Concerns may require another IEP meeting, and changes can be discussed during such meetings. IEPs are typically subject to annual reviews, and if the child isn't making progress, certain components of the IEP may be revised.

How to Help Kids find Extracurricular Activities Sports may be the first thing that comes to mind when many parents think of extracurricular activities for their children, but not all kids are cut out for or interested in competitive athletics. But just because a youngster may not be the next star quarterback or captain of the soccer team does not mean he or she can't find an extracurricular activity to be passionate about.

Parents know that schoolwork comes first, but extracurricular activities can be important to a child's development, serving as an avenue to meet new people and an opportunity to learn the importance of teamwork. The following are a handful of things parents should consider when trying to help their children find the right extracurricular activities.

Interests One of the easiest ways to help kids find an extracurricular activity they can be passionate about is to discuss their interests with them. Youngsters with a love of animals might enjoy volunteering at a local animal shelter or hospital, while those who love to write may find writing for the school newspaper is a great way to apply that passion in a practical setting. Even kids with a passion for video games might be interested in learning about computer graphics and what it takes to design games.

When trying to find extracurricular activities for your children, resist the urge to write off any of their interests.

Instead, use those interests as jumping off points to further engage their passions.

Availability Parents know that school comes before extracurricular activities, but kids may not be so wise. Keep in mind kids' existing workloads when helping them find the right afterschool activities. Many organizations are especially flexible with teenage volunteers or employees, but parents still must keep a watchful eye to ensure kids do not overextend themselves. Kids who overcommit to extracurricular activities may end up feeling burnt out, which can have a negative impact on their schoolwork.

Encourage kids to find activities they care about, but emphasize that these activities should not become bigger priorities than schoolwork. Let kids know that they can get more involved during summer vacation, but make sure kids don't devote too much of their time to afterschool activities during the school year. How to Overcome Excuses & Commit to Working Out

Staying healthy requires a daily commitment. It is not always easy to get out of bed for those early-morning workouts or jump on the treadmill at the end of the night when you finally have some free time, but such efforts are a great way to maintain a healthy lifestyle into your golden years.

Many men and women know there are plenty of excuses to skip workouts. Overcoming such excuses can sometimes be difficult, but there are ways to ensure you stay on the right track toward a healthy lifestyle.

Excuse #1: I don't have enough time to exercise.

Shortage of time is a factor for many busy individuals.

The Department of Health and Human Services recommends the average person get at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity. Thirty minutes per day can easily be broken up into three, 10-minute sessions. Take the stairs, jog on your lunch hour, or do deep-seated squats while preparing dinner. It's easy to fit in daily exercise if you're willing to be creative.

Excuse #2: I'm too out of shape. Getting back into shape is a prime motivator for exercise. However, fear of being able to keep up or personal body image issues sometimes keep people from exercising. Excuse #3: Gyms are too expensive. You don't necessarily need a gym to get in shape, but the programs and guidance offered at health centers certainly make it easier. Gyms may have different price plans based on members' needs, and many gyms are willing to work with prospective members operating on tight budgets. Check with your health insurance provider, too, as you may be eligible for rebates or discounts if you make a predetermined number of visits in a given time span or use an in-network gym.

Exercise is beneficial for many reasons, and overcoming excuses to skip workouts is a great way to maintain long-term health.

Excuse #4: Working out is boring. Performing the same routine day in and day out can be monotonous.

That's why it is important to vary your exercises and try new things. If you're usually on the machines at the gym, try a group class instead. Enlist a friend to come along and it can make the workout more interesting.

Excuse #5: I'm too tired to work out. Routine exercise wakes up the senses and gives you energy, and daily workouts promote a more restful slumber. Over time, you may find that you feel more rested and energized.

Most parents know it’s important to teach their kids about money, but it’s easier said than done for today’s children, many of whom sport pricey smartphones, headphones, and other gadgets with no real understanding of the costs involved.

Many children have no inkling of the value of a dollar.

Technology has made it easy for kids to make purchases on their phones or tablets linked to mom’s credit card, but they don’t really know where the money comes from. It’s up to parents to teach kids about money before they enter the real world and the stakes are higher.

Here are seven tips for teaching children about money:

Teach by example. Parents who are careless with money

are more likely to raise children who share their attitudes about finances. However, kids whose parents are responsible with their spending will grow up understanding the value of a dollar.

Demonstrate the work-money connection. Many parents lavish their children with toys and expensive gifts with no strings attached, but kids who earn money through chores, save up for expensive purchases, and learn the concept of delayed gratification will be properly prepared when they enter the real world.

Don’t use money as a reward. Children should not feel entitled to money as a result of good behavior.

Grown-ups don’t earn $2 for eating all of their carrots or brushing their teeth. Parents should set basic expectations for children’s behavior – without any promise of payment – and provide money in exchange for chores and other work.

Develop early budgeting skills. As your kids acquire money from chores, birthdays and other gifts, help them budget upfront. Create three jars labeled Spend, Save and Give. Each time they receive money, they must choose how to allocate that money themselves. Help them stick to the plan when it comes to spending and saving to drill in the money management lesson.

Open a savings account. Parents can teach their children the basics of banking by helping them open savings accounts in their own names. Kids will learn important financial

lessons by watching their accounts grow or shrink depending on how they manage their money.

Encourage older teens to get a job. Teens are less likely to be cavalier with money when they understand what it takes to earn it. A job outside the home can teach teens responsibility, discipline and time management.

Try an object lesson. Parents can use a time-tested technique to teach their kids the concept of discipline, saving and interest. Give children one chocolate, candy or other treat and tell them they can eat it now, or wait a few hours to earn two treats. Studies show that kids who learn how to delay gratification experience greater happiness and success in life.

Changing How You Perceive the Role of Your Investment Advisor On the surface, when people think of an investment advisor, financial planner or retirement planner, what they think of is someone that’s going to assist them with making the selections of their stocks, bonds and mutual funds. As you transition into the retirement stage there are many other important areas of retirement that also need to be considered. Selecting the right retirement guide that will be able to help in all of these areas is crucial for you to have a fulfilling retirement.

As you transition into retirement (the portfolio distribution phase), it’s important that the advisor begin to take on a larger role when it comes to your financial well-being. In the distribution phase, the investment selection must be complemented by a strategy of when best to file for Social Security Benefits, a plan to minimize the amount of taxes that will be due, and a sustainable withdrawal strategy to ensure that your needs will be met for the remainder of your lifetime.

Fiduciary vs. Suitability When it comes to the investment selection, it’s very important to understand what type of advisor with whom you’re working. There are two different types of advisors that plan within two different sets of rules. There’s the investment advisor, who is held to a fiduciary standard, and then there is the registered representative, or an insurance professional, who is held to a suitability standard. Understanding what standards that they’re held to and how they’re compensated is part of the investment selection process that, as the consumer, you need to be aware of. The differences are crucial.

A fiduciary standard is a legal obligation where the advisor must act in the best interest of their client and puts the client’s best interest ahead of their own. It is the highest standard of care available under law. Fiduciary advisors can be regulated by the SEC or state regulators. An example to explain this standard is an advisor with two identical products that have different fees, who must recommend the one that is lower in cost. They can’t recommend the product that makes more money for them or their company. A fiduciary advisor is often paid by a quarterly fee that is calculated as a percentage of assets.

According to the FIRNA Industry Professionals manual, the suitability standard requires that a registered representative or insurance professional must have a reasonable basis to believe that a recommended transaction or investment strategy involving a security or securities is suitable for the customer. This is based primarily on financial objectives, current income level and age, in order to complete a commissionable sale of a financial product.

There is no requirement to find the best investment for you, only ones that are seemingly suitable for you. They offer a range of products for sale carried by the company he or she represents. The way that someone with a suitability standard gets paid is by commissions calculated as a percentage of money invested into the product.

Pointers for Adults Returning to School Today's seniors, particularly those who already have passed retirement age, may find themselves with many free hours to fill now that a job no longer accounts for most of their time. Returning to school may help seniors realize lifelong dreams of finishing a degree, exploring a hobby, getting educated to gain work in a new field, or just to fill some time in a productive way.

Information from the United States Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics finds the demand for continuing education is still growing. For those aged 35 and older, the center says adult enrollment should grow by at least another 7 percent through 2016.

It's possible to return to school at any age. Adults looking at continuing education possibilities can heed these easy tips to make stepping into a classroom again successful.

Get some help. Some time may have passed since you last toted textbooks or entered a classroom setting. Things have changed since you last were in school. Sit down with a guidance counselor or a career advisor and go over your schooling goals to plot out a degree map. This will help you determine which courses to take or what schools will best fit your needs.

Research schooling options. According to the National Survey of Students in Continuing Education, adult learners prefer post-secondary education that is affordable and close to home. Recognize that many schools now offer online learning, which may be ideal for you if you prefer to learn from the comfort of home.

Decide what is important to you in a school, and then narrow down your prospects.

Schedule a campus visit. Tour the campus to get a feel for the school environment. Visit with someone in student services or attend an event for adult learners so you will know what the admissions process entails.

Get financial assistance. Scholarships, grants and other financial aid are not just for young students. You may be eligible for financial help. Speak with a financial aid advisor to determine your eligibility for programs.

Decide enrollment status. Do you want to go to school full time or part time or do you want to take classes here and there? Knowing in advance will help you develop the right schedule.

Do You Have Insurance on Your Retirement Plan?

You have insurance on your home, your car, your health. How about your retirement plan?

People have homeowners insurance to protect against fires and floods. They buy insurance to replace their car if it gets wrecked and they buy health insurance to protect themselves from medical costs.

But for many people, their biggest material asset is their retirement portfolio.

Where’s your insurance?

Insure your retirement fund by taking steps to safeguard at least a portion of it. As you get closer to retiring, the amount you safeguard will be what you need to rely on for your retirement income.

If you leave your job, quickly roll your employersponsored 401(k) into an IRA

Then you look for your ‘play checks.’ That’s the money you don’t absolutely have to have, so you can still try to grow it, and take risks with it, in the market.

While 401(k)s are a great tool for saving, particularly if your employer is providing matching funds, if you were to die, the taxes your survivors would pay on your 401(k) would be much higher than on an IRA. That’s because they would have to inherit the money in a lump sum – that could easily take 35 percent right off the top. The lump-sum rule does not apply to IRAs. While your spouse would have the option to inherit your 401(k) as an IRA, your children would not. So, take advantage of your employer-sponsored 401(k), but if you leave the company, convert to an IRA or ROTH IRA. You can also begin transferring your 401(k) funds to an IRA at age 59½.

Here are a few tips for insuring your retirement plan:

For protection from future income tax rate increases, you should consider slowly converting your taxdeferred IRA funds into a ROTH IRA. Yes, you’ll have to pay the taxes now on the money you transfer, but that will guarantee that withdrawals in your retirement are not taxed – even as the money grows. If you plan to leave at least part of your IRA to your children, they’ll benefit from a fund that continues to grow tax-free.

Your retirement income should be derived from guaranteed sources, such as Social Security benefits and your pension plan. It’s the amount you need to pay the bills and do the other things you hope to do in retirement, so your retirement income needs to be a guaranteed source of income.

Annuities are long-term investment options through insurance companies that guarantee you payments over a certain rate of time, which could be the rest of your life or the life of your spouse or other survivor. Note: The guarantee is subject to the financial strength and claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company.
