Sea Lion Strandings

The recent spate of sea lion strandings since the start of 2015 is part of the ongoing unusual mortality event (UME) that began in 2013 according to NOAA. As of this printing, about 3000 sea lion pups that have washed ashore since January severely underweight and in need of immediate human intervention have been helped by zoos and rescue centers along the California coast. The reason for the strandings appears to be linked to the inability of nursing females to locate adequate prey such as sardines due to unusually warm ocean currents off California. It is believed the lack of nearby prey is increasing the time females remain away, which then drives immature and underweight pups to search for food sooner than normal.

Special Olympics Arizona People with intellectual disabilities are found everywhere, without regard to race, religion, political affiliation, culture, economics or social class. Their positive spirit, determination to succeed, and innate human decency make them powerful ambassadors for all people society routinely undervalues, generally ignores or even shuns.

At Special Olympics Arizona (SOAZ), the athletes are the heart of the movement. The athletes not only have the opportunity to develop physical fitness and become competitive athletes, but through support programs such as Athlete Leadership, Unified Sports and Healthy Athletes, they gain the knowledge and resources to live a healthy lifestyle and evolve as leaders and valued members of society.

The first SOAZ competition consisted of a one-day Track & Field event with 100 athletes and 20 volunteers. Today, SOAZ offers 22 sports, 170 programs in 6 regional areas, and five statewide competitions for the over 16,000 athletes and 12,700 volunteers on an annual basis.

Here is a sneak peak at some of the organization’s big summer initiatives:

Summer Games in May SOAZ athletes from across the state will gather in May to compete in the 2015 Summer Olympic Games at Raymond S. Kellis High School. Special Olympics Arizona Summer Games is the largest event on the calendar with more than 1,300 athletes competing in track & field, tennis, powerlifting, volleyball and kayaking events. The event, which will take place May 7 to 9, includes an Olympic-style opening ceremonies, torch run, parade of athletes and victory dance.

2015 Law Enforcement Torch Run in May The mission of the Arizona Law Enforcement Torch Run is to raise funds and awareness for SOAZ statewide. The Torch Run program began in 1981, when Wichita, Kansas Chief of Police Richard LaMunyon saw an urgent need to raise funds for and increase awareness of Special Olympics. The idea was simple: provide local law enforcement with opportunities to volunteer with Special Olympics in communities where the officers lived and worked.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is a series of intra-state/ intra-nation runs that take place in the spring and summer in the United States and around the world. Throughout the course of the Torch Run, participants collect contributions from individuals and businesses, asking to help raise support for incredible Special Olympics athletes.

The Torch Run is much more than just a run; it is a yearround campaign to raise awareness and funds for SOAZ. The Law Enforcement Torch Run puts on statewide events such as tip-a-cop, cop on top of doughnut shops, golf tournaments, polar plunges and inmate fundraising— just to name a few!

All the money raised for the Law Enforcement Torch Run goes directly to support Special Olympics athletes in Arizona and their supporting programs.

High Blood Pressure Dangers Feeling overworked? Try being a heart! When you are working – it’s working. When you are playing – it’s working. When you are sleeping – it’s working.

Your heart is under pressure to perform 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And if you are among the one in three adults in the United States living with high blood pressure, you run the risk of your heart “quitting” on you at any time – and you probably don’t even know it.

Virtually symptom-free, the American Heart Association (AHA) estimates that while more than 78 million people in the United States have high blood pressure, half don’t even know it. Uncontrolled and untreated high blood pressure can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure, erectile dysfunction, aneurysm, kidney failure, atherosclerosis (fatty buildup in the arteries), and even blindness.

May is High Blood Pressure Education Month. There is no better time to understand the risk factors that lead to high blood pressure and how to best combat this silent killer.

Blood Pressure Blood pressure is the force of blood on the walls of the blood vessels as blood flows through them. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), this pressure naturally rises and falls during the day, but when it is consistently too high, it is considered high blood pressure. The medical term is hypertension.

Blood pressure is usually expressed as a fraction, where the first number – called systolic pressure – measures the force in the arteries when the heart pumps, and the second number – diastolic pressure – measures the heart at rest.

Blood pressure measuring 120/80 is considered in the normal range.

Combating High Blood Pressure Among the easiest ways to reduce slightly elevated blood pressure or prehypertension:

· Lose weight · Add foods with potassium, magnesium, calcium, lean proteins and fiber to your diet · Limit foods with sodium, Trans fats and saturated fats to your diet · Limit alcohol consumption · Quitting smoking and avoiding secondhand smoke

If your blood pressure is closer to 120-139 systolic or 80-89 diastolic, you are considered to have prehypertension.

If your blood pressure is above 140 systolic or above 90 diastolic, you are considered to have high blood pressure.

If you develop high blood pressure, depending on the severity, the above tactics are recommended in combination with one or more prescribed medications, all of which should be done under a doctor’s care.

While the exact cause of high blood pressure is unknown, the AHA reports the following potential risk factors to developing the condition:

How to Recognize Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is an oft-unpleasant condition that can cause pain and tenderness throughout the body. While fibromyalgia can affect anyone, the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases notes that between 80 and 90 percent of those diagnosed with fibromyalgia are women.

While there is no consensus among medical professionals as to the cause of fibromyalgia, there are several recognized symptoms. Women who learn to recognize these symptoms may be quicker to seek treatment, which can include a combination of medication and physical therapy and possibly additional treatments depending on the plan designed by a woman's physician.

Pain Widespread pain is the most common symptom of fibromyalgia. The pain may begin as a dull ache, but it also may be sharp or throbbing. Pain resulting from fibromyalgia will be felt in muscles, tendons and ligaments around the joints. Pain can be intermittent and affect different parts of the body at different times.

Difficulty sleeping

Tenderness throughout the body is another common symptom of fibromyalgia. Tender points may be found on the back of the head, the area between the shoulders, the front of the neck, the top of the chest, the tops and sides of the hips, the inside areas of the knees, and the outside areas of the elbows. When these areas hurt upon being touched that may be indicative of fibromyalgia.

The painful nature of fibromyalgia can make it difficult for some women to fall asleep. Women who do manage to fall asleep may find that their sleep is no longer restorative or as restful as it once was. The NFA notes that researchers found individuals with fibromyalgia experience specific and distinctive abnormalities during stage 4 sleep, which is when individuals enjoy their deepest periods of sleep.

Researchers found that fibromyalgia sufferers were frequently interrupted by bursts of awake-like brain activity during their deepest stages of sleep, limiting the amount of time they spend in deep sleep and thereby affecting their energy levels.

Headaches

Irritable bowel syndrome

A study in the medical journal Clinical Rheumatology found that roughly half of people with fibromyalgia experience headaches. These headaches may stem from pain or tender points that develop in the upper back and neck. But because headaches can be linked to so many conditions, women experiencing chronic headaches, including migraines, should discuss those headaches with their physicians.

Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, can cause bloating, constipation, diarrhea and stomach cramps. The link between IBS and fibromyalgia remains a mystery, but women with fibromyalgia are more likely to suffer from IBS than women without fibromyalgia.

The Difference Between Celiac Disease & Gluten Intolerance Many people are familiar with the gluten-free movement, even if they don't tailor their diets around gluten-free foods. What began as a relatively unknown dietary restriction among people diagnosed with a certain intestinal disease has branched out to include many other people who avoid gluten for various health reasons.

A sensitivity to or intolerance of gluten is not the same as suffering from celiac disease, a condition that requires people to refrain from eating gluten. Understanding the differences between the disease and the decision to avoid gluten can make it easier to understand the various effects gluten has on the body.

What is gluten?

Gluten is a protein composite found primarily in wheat and other grains, such as barley, rye and spelt. The stored proteins of corn and rice are sometimes called glutens, but their compositions differ from true gluten.

Gluten often is found naturally in foods and is an important source of protein. Gluten also may be added to foods to supplement their protein content.

Gluten gives dough its elasticity and helps breads rise and keep their shape. Gluten usually gives baked goods a chewy texture. Baking will make gluten molecules come together, which stabilizes the shape of the final product.

Gluten also may be used as a stabilizing agent in other foods, like sauces and ice cream.

Celiac disease Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder linked to the consumption of gluten. The Celiac Disease Foundation says the disease affects one in 100 people across the globe.

When those with celiac disease eat foods that contain gluten, their bodies see the protein as a foreign invader. As a result, the body mounts an immune system response and ends up attacking itself in the area of the small intestine, which is responsible for nutrient absorption. When the small intestine is damaged severely, it is unable to extract vitamins and minerals from food, leading to various health problems, including malnutrition.

In many cases, celiac disease is hereditary. A person with a first-degree relative, meaning a parent, child or sibling, with celiac disease has a one in 10 risk of developing celiac himself or herself, according to the CDF. In some instances, all it takes is one instance of consuming gluten to trigger an immune system reaction that continues for life.

There is no cure for celiac disease, and those diagnosed with the disease must avoid gluten to prevent serious health problems. Left untreated, celiac disease can lead to anemia, infertility, neurological conditions and intestinal cancers.

Gluten sensitivity When consuming gluten, a person with gluten sensitivity or intolerance does not experience symptoms as severely as one who has celiac disease does. For example, those with sensitivity do not experience small intestine damage or develop the autoantibodies found in the tissue of those with celiac disease.

A research team led by celiac expert Dr. Alessio Fasano discovered that gluten sensitivity is associated with an immune response that is very different from the response seen in celiac disease patients. According to the study, which included a four-month gluten challenge, individuals with gluten sensitivity showed no signs of intestinal damage or increased permeability, but they did exhibit an increase in an innate immunity marker. This is different from the immune response seen in celiac disease, which is noted by an increase in an adaptive immune marker.

Despite this, those with gluten sensitivity may still exhibit similar symptoms to celiac disease. These include intestinal pain, bloating, diarrhea and cramps. In addition, depression, skin rashes and irritability may occur.

People who suspect a gluten sensitivity or celiac disease should visit a doctor for a simple blood test. Gluten should be avoided only if advised by a doctor, and individuals should not self-diagnose and treat symptoms.

Factors that Make For Extraordinary Friendships Numerous scientific studies show that developing friendships is an essential ingredient to a healthy life.

But few people are intentionally trying to avoid heart disease or improve their blood pressure when they seek out, or stumble into, new friendships. Instead, they just want someone to hang out with, confide in, or trust in times of trouble.

Friends can start out from a variety of places, but still share the same incredible bond. Sometimes that bond can span a lifetime. Other times, the bond is just for a short period. Either way, friendships are a vital part of life.

Not all friendships are equal and, over the long haul, not all turn out the way people might like.

Having a mutually beneficial relationship is crucial. If only one person is willing to put in time and effort that friendship won’t work.

We tend to intuitively know who real friends are and which friendships are worth our time and energy.

Here are six factors that can lead to great friendships – three that bring people together and three that keep them together:

Similarity The phrase “birds of a feather flock together” has been around at least since the 16th century, and it’s no wonder it became such a well-worn cliché. It happens to be true.

We surround ourselves with people whose style, attitudes, personalities, likes, dislikes, and mannerisms are similar to ours. Those similarities help to build an instant bond. We feel comfortable around those people and easily slide into conversations about topics that interest both of us or schedule activities we both enjoy.

Intrigue Sometimes people are so fascinating that we can’t help but be drawn to them. We can build a great bond of friendship with someone when we are genuinely curious about his or her stories, lifestyle or backgrounds.

History Growing up together, or going through the same or similar experiences, can lead to a lasting connection between two people. Other people may not be able to have a good understanding of, or empathy for, a situation you went through. But this person understands you because they went through it, too. Sharing a past with someone definitely can create a special bond.

Positive influence A great friend will be someone who is a good influence and will support you and your goals. They should inspire you to live up to your highest potential so you can be your best self. The world has enough negativity. You don’t need that in a friend.

Your happiness True friends want to see you happy. The best kinds of friends are the ones who have your best interests at heart, even to a fault. They may tell you something you don’t want to hear at the risk of fracturing the friendship, just because they know it is in your best interest. At the same time, a true friend will never ask you to compromise or jeopardize any part of yourself in order to be their friend.

Loyalty A loyal friend will have your back no matter what. They will stand up for you and with you when the need arises.

They won’t speak ill of you to others and they don’t let others speak bad about you either. Loyalty is not an easy trait to find, but it’s essential to any really good relationship.

As years go by, I think most of us start to realize that it is no longer the quantity of friends that matter, but the quality. You just build a great bond with some people and you can call on each other in times of trouble. Good friends are hard to find, but impossible to forget.

When you deprive your ears from hearing, you are also depriving your brain from processing environmental sounds, speech and cognition. Your brain processes sound binaurally (from both sides), so not keeping both sides of the brain active can create cognitive load (straining to hear) and can lead to cognitive decline. By keeping all the areas of the brain functioning to their full potential, the risk of dementia decreases.

any other neck or back injury. Over the years, I learned that auto-accidents injuries are different. Published medical research supports my observations.

A study published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, followed a group of whiplash victims for 30 years. What they found was a little frightening; less than half of people involved in a motor vehicle accident fully recovered even after three decades. Stated another way this means that one of every two whiplash patients will have problems related to their accident for the rest of their life.

In research published in the Journal of Forensic and Legal Medicine, researchers report that it is common for whiplash victims to sustain brain, spinal cord and nerve injures leading to hypersensitivity of the pain pathways. Furthermore, these injuries often can't be visualized with routine diagnostic tests, so it is not surprising that current treatment helps less than 50 percent of whiplash patients. With traditional treatments, 1-in-two patients are at risk for lifelong, neurologically driven, pain hypersensitivity. Chiropractic neurology deals with the function of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. This allows us to pinpoint areas of the nervous system than may look normal on an MRI, but function poorly.

Q. What is the newest treatment option available for varicose veins, and will my insurance cover it?

A. Varicose veins are incompetent veins that appear under the skin and are usually blue in color. They can become enlarged due to pooling of blood. This occurs when the valves in the veins fail to keep the blood flowing in one direction that is toward the heart. This condition causes pain and swelling, night cramps, change in skin color and severe cases ulcers. Spider veins are small blue and red vessels visible within the skin, usually on legs but sometimes on face and chest.

The most modern and latest technology available at our center is Endovenous Laser Ablation Therapy (EVLT), an endovenous laser treatment performed in the office, under local anesthesia. EVLT is a minimally invasive method for treating varicose veins.

Will I have to miss work after the laser surgery?

A laser is used in a 45-minute procedure to close the incompetent vein. There is no down time with EVLT. You are encouraged to walk and get back with your normal activities.

Diabetic eye disease refers to a group of eye problems that diabetics may face as a complication of diabetes including cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

The most common and potentially devastating to vision is diabetic retinopathy, which affects over 5 million adult Americans.

Diabetic retinopathy is a condition in which the blood vessels in the retina become damaged. This damage is directly associated with high blood sugar. Damaged blood vessels leak fluid, blood and protein in the surrounding areas. This leakage may cause vision loss. Some studies indicate that 40-45 percent of people with diabetes have some form of diabetic retinopathy.

Even with a diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy, many still have very good visual function because of the treatments that are available.

An eye examination is the only way to detect diabetic changes. Diabetics should have their eye examined a minimum of once a year. An optometrist or ophthalmologist performing a routine eye examination with dilation can diagnose any diabetic changes inside the eye and recommend treatment if indicated.

When our children have trouble sleeping, it affects their lives, their health and our relationships with them. Be on the lookout for the signs such as crabbiness, tiredness, headaches and other, as well as any possibility of ADHD. Help Your Child Transition from a Crib to a Bed Much of a young child's life revolves around adapting to new situations. Even when a routine is established, things can change and new skills must be learned. From moving from bottle to cup, to giving up a pacifier, to no longer using diapers or training pants, young children must tackle many transitions.

One such transition is making the switch from sleeping in a crib to sleeping in a bed. A crib can be a safe, comforting place for a child. But over time, the crib may no longer be the right place for the child to rest and this can manifest itself in a number of ways. For instance, a child may attempt to climb over the railing edge. When such behavior persists, most parents consider switching to a toddler bed, or a twin-sized bed with safety railings.

Not every child has the same feelings about a "big boy or girl" bed. Some are excited about the prospect while others feel a bit frightened. There are certain things a parent can do to make the process go more smoothly for all involved.

Get talking

Repurpose a safety gate

Before buying the bed, start talking about it with your child. Talk about how the new bed will be comfortable and exciting and how your child is no longer a baby. Go to the store and look at all of the beds available. If your toddler has an older sibling, let the youngster try out his or her older sibling's bed.

Since your child will now have free reign to get out of bed when he or she desires, prevent middle-of-the-night roaming or leaving the house while you are sleeping; block the bedroom doorway with a gate. This will be for the child's protection and give you peace of mind.

Childproof the room

Choose the right time

Chances are your child already plays in his or her room, so it already may be full of safety features. To be on the super-safe side, however, give it another look and be sure all electrical outlets are sealed, top-heavy furniture is secured, and items that pose safety risks are removed.

It's best not to make a substantial change to your child's sleeping environment when there are other major events going on. Moving to a new home or welcoming a new baby into the house can be stressful. Wait until later to move to the bed.

Stick to the same pre-sleep routine Children are creatures of habit and like to know what is coming next. Therefore, stick to the same routine around bedtime so that all will feel familiar. This may include reading a story, brushing teeth, and putting on pajamas, straightening up the room, or singing a lullaby together.

Choose the transition type that works for your family Some parents choose to leave the crib up and slowly transition to the bed. For example, parents may let the child nap in the bed throughout the day and sleep in the crib at night. Still, some parents prefer the out-of-sight, out-of-mind method of taking apart the crib and making the bed the sole option for sleeping. Gauge your child's reaction to the bed and select the option that you think will work. And remember, if the crib is still safe and comfortable for your child, there is no rush in switching to a bed. Just like other milestones in a kid's life, this one is reached when the child is ready.

Parents should also avoid letting their children sleep in Mom and Dad's bed. This promotes a habit that will be hard to break down the line. Although the first few nights of the new bed may be hard for your child, with time he or she will grow comfortable with his or her new sleeping arrangements.

When times get tough, get tougher; stay true to who you are and don’t compromise your principles; be willing to walk away from something that’s causing you clear harm.

The perfect worker, wife and mother – these are ‘the big three’ roles that matter most to women, but you really want to make sure your children don’t get lost in this juggling. Your husband and your coworkers are adults; children, on the other hand, are vulnerable.

Here are a few suggestions for women concerned about their role as Mom.

Make sure children are engaged in their studies and extracurricular activities, such as sports, study groups, a job or other productive behavior. Talk to them about what they’re doing and what you’re doing.

Proactive efforts outside the home, like civic and humanitarian projects, are a great way of modeling behavior.

Returning from maternity leave can be challenging for any mother, but it can be especially difficult for first-time mothers, many of whom spend the vast majority of their maternity leaves with newborn babies in hand. While the challenge of returning from maternity leave can be considerable, working mothers can take steps to ensure the transition goes as smoothly as possible.

Find trustworthy child care. Start looking as soon as

possible, asking physicians, family members, friends and neighbors for recommendations. Insist on references from any potential caregivers, and don't hesitate to find a new care provider if your initial choice does not pan out.

Adjust your breast-feeding schedule. As the end of

maternity leave nears, mothers can adjust their breastfeeding schedules so babies grow accustomed to nursing during hours when their mothers will be home and not at the office.

Inquire about telecommuting. The idea of telecommuting might have been a topic better broached before you went on maternity leave, but it's never too late to inquire.

Telecommuting can make the transition back to work a little easier, and it can save you substantial amounts of money on child care as well.

Address any uncomfortable feelings. Returning from

maternity leave often stirs feelings of guilt or sadness. If you develop such feelings, speak openly about them with your significant other and/or speak to fellow working mothers who can often offer support and share their own stories about returning from maternity leave.

Cut back on your commitments. Before you became a

mother, you might have been the type of employee who was never afraid to take on a new project no matter how much was already on your plate. Now you may have to make adjustments. Avoid taking on any additional work as you get used to being a working mother. Strength Training Tips for Women Strength training might once have been the realm of hulking males aiming to build as much muscle as possible, but active adults now recognize that strength training is beneficial to men and women alike. In fact, strength training can be especially beneficial to women, helping them develop and maintain strong bones and thereby reducing their risk for osteoporosis, a medical condition that afflicts more women than men and is characterized by weak or brittle bones.

Though women over 50 are most susceptible to osteoporosis, women of all ages can benefit from strength training. Those who are unfamiliar with such exercise may be hesitant to dive right in for fear of injury or due to the sometimes-intimidating nature of strength training sections at fitness centers. The following tips should help women overcome any such fears as they adapt to fitness regimens that include regular strength training.

Work with a trainer initially. Strength training is great for the body, but women who have never before lifted a weight might want to employ the services of a personal trainer until they are comfortable enough to go it alone.

Personal trainers can ensure you are performing exercises correctly and not in a way that can cause injury. In addition, trainers can answer any questions you might have and help you establish strength-training goals.

Begin with light weights. When starting a strengthtraining regimen, use lighter weights, only increasing the weight once you are confident you have the motion of an exercise down pat and need a greater challenge. If you don't want to add too much weight, you can increase the number of reps so your workout stays challenging.

Expect some soreness, but take stock of any aches and pains. You should expect to feel some moderate soreness after your first few strength training sessions.

That soreness likely stems from your body never before engaging its muscles in the way strength training does. But any persistent aches and pains should be taken seriously.

It's important to take note of where the pain is coming from, which can indicate whether you are performing exercises correctly. For example, your shoulders should not be inflamed or aching during or after a biceps workout. If they are, your form is probably off and you should consult a trainer to help ensure your form is correct and you are not risking injury.

Work the entire body. Adequate strength training targets various muscles in the body, not just the arms.

Women should make sure their strength training regimens include exercises for their shoulders, back, chest, arms and legs. Focus on one or two muscle groups each workout.

Spice things up from time to time. Many people eventually grow bored with their strength training regimens. Women can spice up their regimens by adding repetitions and lowering weights every four to six weeks or routinely looking for new muscle-specific exercises to replace exercises that have grown boring. Strength training might be most often associated with men, but women can benefit from lifting weights in the immediate future and for years to come.

Menopause Diet What to eat & what to avoid

Health care professionals note that the foods women eat can affect how they feel during menopause. Some foods may reduce or eliminate troublesome symptoms, while others actually may make conditions worse.

Weight gain, hot flashes, lack of energy, and mood swings are some of the more widely known symptoms of menopause, which is the time when a woman's menstrual cycle permanently ceases due to the natural depletion of ovarian follicles and oocytes. Elevated follicle stimulating hormone, or FSH, and low estrogen levels are consistent with menopause and can cause any number of symptoms.

While hormone replacement therapy is one option, women may find that changing their diets is enough to make them feel better and may even help them reduce their risk for certain diseases and better manage some of the negative side effects of menopause.

Osteoporosis Menopausal women are at a greater risk for osteoporosis, a condition in which bones become weaker and more brittle.

Increasing one's intake of foods rich in calcium and vitamin D can help. Calcium-rich foods include low-fat yogurt, sardines, broccoli and firm tofu.

Weight gain It's possible to gain some weight during menopause. Data from the International Menopause Society and the Mayo Clinic point to decreases in metabolism as the source of menopausal weight gain. Women should cut back on fatty foods and trim any visible fats from the foods they cook.

Eating foods high in complex sources of fiber can help a person to feel full on less food.

Mood swings Hormone fluctuations may lead to mood swings and feelings of anxiety or depression. Improve mental wellbeing by increasing intake of foods rich in B vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids. Consuming whole grains, lentils, flaxseed and oily fish can help.

Risk for other diseases Women who are menopausal are at an elevated risk for breast cancer and even cardiovascular disease. The North American Menopause Society says such women should cut down on alcohol consumption, which can contribute to increased risk for both of these conditions. Women who have between two and five drinks per day are one and a half times as likely to get breast cancer as women who don't drink at all.

Sugary foods may provide a fast jolt of energy, but that boost often dwindles shortly thereafter. Look for carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables, as such carbs provide longer-lasting energy. Boosting iron intake also may provide more pep and may even boost metabolism.

While protein is used to build and repair muscle tissue and promote neurological function, it also can encourage fat loss, deliver essential nutrients and improve metabolic activity. Because protein can increase satiety better than some other foods, it also can be a good way to curb cravings and help cut out some extra calories.

Although protein is an important component of a nutritious diet, some women do not consume enough of it or even know what "enough protein" entails.

According to a recent survey by Luna, 50 percent of women ages 18 to 50 do not know if they're getting enough protein.

How much protein? How much protein a woman needs isn't an exact science. The Institute of Medicine and the United States Department of Agriculture recommends that all men and women over the age of 19 consume 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, but that number can be customized depending on how active a person is. Because high-protein foods also may be high in saturated fats, it's best to choose protein sources that include essential amino acids and are relatively low in saturated fat. Such sources include fish, roasted chicken and soybeans.

Muscle building properties. Many people consume protein to build muscle. By consuming adequate amounts of protein, women can retain lean muscle mass and keep their bodies strong. Physically active women may need more protein than women who are sedentary to help fuel the recovery of muscles after their workouts. Muscles actually are built outside of the gym.

During physical activity, muscle tissue is torn and broken down. Amino acids in protein will help repair muscle tissue to grow back stronger.

Fends off hunger pangs. Protein takes longer to break down in the body and digest compared to carbohydrates, which usually produce quick punches of energy. A longer digestion window means you can feel fuller for a longer amount of time and avoid excess calories. Slower digestion may also help stabilize energy levels.

Protein helps burn fat. According to BodyBuilding.com, protein has the highest thermic effect of food, or TEF, which is the amount of calories it takes your body to process and utilize a nutrient. This can mean your body actually uses a quarter to 35 percent of the caloric energy from consumed protein just to digest it. Those who eat more protein during the day may see faster weight loss. Furthermore, excess protein consumed will not cause women to bulk up, as the body will excrete whatever it does not use as fuel.

Protein supplements. Much of the protein a healthy body needs can be gotten through food. However, some women like protein shakes to replace a meal or provide extra fuel after a workout. Two of the most readily available protein powders include whey concentrate, a fast-absorbing pre- and post-workout protein source, and casein, a protein that can be used as a meal or right before bed because it can take five to seven hours to fully breakdown in the body.

Many mothers find that managing such hectic balancing acts leaves little time for physical fitness. But there are ways for working moms to stay physically fit even as they juggle their commitments to career and family.

Work out in the early morning. Working out in the early morning, when the kids are still asleep and the office has yet to open, is a great way for busy working mothers to get their daily exercise. Designate a room in your home where you can spend time each morning doing some light strength training before hitting the treadmill or elliptical machine.

Exercise with the kids. Working mothers looking to

find time for exercise can turn part of family time into a time to exercise with their children. Play in the yard with youngsters while dinner is cooking or go for nightly postmeal walks. Exercising with kids is a great way for mothers to get their daily exercise while also instilling a love of physical activity in their children.

Have a backup plan on hand. Working out at a gym

can be motivational, as many mothers want to make sure their monthly membership fees aren't going to waste. But there will inevitably be days when working mothers can't get to the gym. Prepare for such days by purchasing home workout DVDs you can play while the kids are doing their homework or after they have gone to bed.

Look for gyms with child care. Many gyms now offer

on-site child care to parents of young children who can't stay home alone while their folks are at the gym. Some gyms even offer fitness programs to youngsters, helping to ensure kids get the daily exercise they need as well.

Exercise during lunch breaks. If possible, squeeze in

Late last year, PEOPLE Magazine asked Blunt if “motherhood is all it’s cracked up to be?” “It is that and more,” she told the magazine. “I know that everybody says that.

“Blunt will play Zoe, one half of a married couple with John (played by John Krasinski) whose family life is turned upside down when they inherit a rundown circus and a mysterious box of Animal Crackers, which magically changes the person who eats them into animals,” cites Variety.com. The animated film is set to be released in 2016.

For fans who can’t wait that long, according to Variety.com and other entertainment sources, Blunt will be starring in a crime drama called Sicario this fall and The Huntsman next year. Both feature films are set for national release.

Five Tactics to Defy the Impossible in Business

In terms of growth in business ownership, women have been soaring past men, averaging increases 1.5 times the national average, according to the 2014 State of WomenOwned Businesses Report by American Express Open.

There are nearly 9.1 million women-owned businesses providing jobs for nearly 7.9 million people and generating more than $1.4 trillion, according to the report.

What is interesting is that these businesses match or exceed their peers in terms of numbers, employment and revenue – until they hit the $1 million mark.

At $1 million, they start lagging behind. Despite their bigger-than-average numbers, women’s businesses are still smaller than average.

Female CEOs tend to unconsciously start sabotaging their success just as they’re growing into greatness. Why? From the time we’re babies, society – often our own families, too – measure our worth based on how we measure up to their expectations. So we end up measuring our value on those same expectations, not the values that come from our true, authentic self. That sets up some real conflicts as we build successful businesses.

How to overcome that? To “defy impossible”? Here are a few tips:

Know your worth in dollars and cents Most women tend to accept the unspoken expectation that people will notice and reward us. That’s a mistake. If you over give or over work, you actually train your environment to expect you to give without compensation.

Start calculating the time, money and resources you bring (or save) your clients or company. Write it down. When you are ready to up your rates or ask for a raise, you will not be depending on goodwill. You will have hard data to back up your hard work.

Trust that you are more than enough Too often, we look outside of ourselves for validation.

Sometimes we think a degree or a title will give us the “right” to be paid top dollar. You are brilliant. Start noticing that when you show up, things get better, they get done and people soar. When you trust that you are enough, you stop backing down and you start standing for yourself — no credential needed.

Heal your heart Money is a heart condition. Think of money as energy.

Energy needs a conduit. Most women lead with our hearts.

Whenever you are harboring resentment, regret, anger, resignation or fear, you are blocking yourself from your seven-figure future. When our hearts are congested with negative energy, we block our wealth.

Nursing Home & Assisted-Living Expenses Can Decimate Retirement Savings People pondering their retirement years often conjure images of spending more time on a favorite pastime or traveling around the country or the world.

Health concerns can intrude on those idyllic scenes, though, not only affecting enjoyment of life but also punching a heavy dent in retirement savings.

As we age, usually our medical or long-term care expenses increase, sometimes depleting our assets to a level of crisis.

It’s important for retirees, and anyone planning for retirement, to become educated about what the pitfalls are and what they need to do to avoid losing their life savings.

Long-term care especially can burn a hole in savings accounts. In 2012, for example, nursing home care averaged $74,800 a year, according to a report by the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation.

Meanwhile, assisted living facilities averaged $39,500 per year, and home-health services averaged $21 per hour.

More than 10 million Americans need some sort of longterm care, the Kaiser report said. That number covers all ages, even children, but about half are people 65 and older.

Those older Americans had looked forward to enjoying their golden years. They should be able to have actual golden years instead of what can end up being scary years, both personally and financially.

Certainly, being able to maintain good health is a key factor in protecting savings and making retirement enjoyable and satisfying. But life doesn’t always work out that way. Fortunately, there are strategies seniors can use to lessen the impact of expenses brought on by long-term care needs. Some of those include:

VA benefits. Military veterans may be able to offset nursing home or assisted-living expenses through benefits provided by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. A veteran’s eligibility for long-term care services would be determined based on his or her need for ongoing treatment, personal care and assistance, as well as the availability of the service in the area where the person lives, according to the Department of Veteran Affairs.

Other factors, such as financial eligibility, a serviceconnected disability, insurance coverage, and/or ability to pay may also come into play.

Medicaid compliant SPIAs. A SPIA is a singlepremium immediate annuity. Typically, a SPIA is a contract with an insurance company where you pay the company a sum of money up front (the premium), and the company promises to pay you a certain amount of money periodically for the rest of your life.

A Medicaid compliant SPIA is a specially designed annuity that pays out over the person’s “life expectancy” and has other specific characteristics. A couple who put money in a Medicaid annuity are able to avoid having the income from that annuity count against the financial assistance a spouse receives for nursing home care.

Setting up a trust. Trusts can help shelter wealth from the look-back periods in Medicaid requirements and assist in qualifying for VA programs, among other advantages.

Safety Tips for Women Traveling Alone

Perhaps more than ever, women are willing to ditch their traveling companions and go solo when it comes time to hit the road and see the world.

A survey by Small Luxury Hotels of the World, for example, revealed that between 2011 and 2012 there was a 53 percent increase in the demand for rooms by women traveling alone. The London Daily Mail also reports that some hotels have taken steps to make their accommodations more appealing to women traveling on their own, with such features as women-only floors.

Still, despite the trend, many women may worry that such solitary excursions carry too many risks, making them a target for thieves, kidnappers and other criminals. It doesn’t have to be that way. There is no reason to let your fears keep you from the adventures you can experience.

Sure, there are risky places and bad types out there. But with the right precautions, women can travel solo with confidence, visiting the places and meeting the people they always dreamed of and returning home with wonderful stories and memories. Here are five tips for traveling boldly while staying safe.

Steer clear of the most dangerous locales. Simply

put, some places just aren’t worth the risk, so avoid “no go” neighborhoods, cities and countries. For example, if you feel compelled to go to the Middle East, visit Israel, which is the safest Middle Eastern country. Still, if the destination is truly important to you, go ahead and take the risk.

Connect with friendly contacts. Make yourself known not only to the U.S. embassy or consul, but also to people in your field.

Learn the language or at least useful phrases. Even

if it’s just a few keywords, speaking the language can come in handy if you need to seek assistance. Understanding what others are saying also can alert you to potential dangers.

Dress wisely, pay attention to manners and spend money in moderation. Essentially, don’t draw unnecessary attention to yourself. For added protection against thieves, carry money and identification in a pouch under your shirt.

When is the Right Time to Leave 'Home'?

Few people like to admit their age is affecting them.

However, as we age, certain abilities become compromised, and it may no longer be practical for aging men and women to remain in their homes, or at least live there alone.

Comfortable living alone may be a signal to an older adult that he or she still has independence. Taking away a license or suggesting a move may cause feelings of animosity. But at some point in time, friends or family members of an aging man or woman might need to broach the topic of moving to an assisted living facility. Such a discussion can be difficult, but having some, evidence that a change is necessary may make the news easier to process. Sometimes the older adult may have already made the decision that a move is necessary, which will make the process even easier.

Moving should never be a knee-jerk reaction unless there is a sudden medical emergency that necessitates fast action.

Under normal circumstances, moving should be a gradual process that begins even before a parent, grandparent or other relative really needs to change residences. Here are some steps to keep in mind.

• Make sure to develop a strong relationship with your loved one. This relationship should be consistent and keep you in frequent contact so you can best assess his or her living situation.

• Talk things over with other siblings or relatives to see if others feel the same way you do. Perhaps they have a different point of view.

• If there are problems at home, make your case by pointing them out. Show the elder adult how day-to-day life has grown more difficult and how certain burdens may be lifted by changing living situations.

• Indicate that access to health care and a safe environment are some of the key benefits of moving to a senior community. Point out other benefits, such as companionship with similarly aged people, activities, transportation, and the presence of a maintenance staff to ensure nothing falls into disrepair.

• Do your research and have the names and amenities of different residences available to discuss. Request brochures from senior communities and offer to make trips to view the homes together with your senior relative.

• If the idea of a "home" is not what your loved one has in mind, discuss the options of moving in with a relative and if this would be a more comfortable situation.

• You may need a mediator or help with finding the right fit for a loved one. Consider hiring a geriatric care manager to help you organize your thoughts and priorities regarding a senior living transition. These individuals provide services that include helping families locate appropriate housing and care services for their loved ones.

Not every senior needs to leave home, but the topic should be broached if assistance with day-to-day activities is needed.

Preventing Osteoporosis Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones that occurs when a person loses too much bone, produces too little bone or both. When a person has osteoporosis, his or her bones become brittle and can easily break. While osteoporosis can affect anyone, women over the age of 50 are especially susceptible. In fact, the National Osteoporosis Foundation notes that a woman's risk of breaking a hip due to osteoporosis is equal to her risk of breast, ovarian and uterine cancers combined.

In spite of the potentially harmful effects of osteoporosis, studies indicate that only 12 percent of people with osteoporosis have had a bone mineral density, or BMD, screening, which is the most reliable diagnostic test for osteoporosis. A big part of that is likely because osteoporosis does not always produce any recognizable symptoms, meaning many people may have the disease without even knowing it. Many women are first diagnosed with osteoporosis or bone loss after suffering a fracture, but there are steps women can take to lower their risk of developing osteoporosis.

Get enough calcium and vitamin D. Calcium helps women develop strong, healthy bones, while vitamin D protects the bones and is necessary for absorbing calcium.

The human body cannot produce new calcium, so it's essential that women get the recommended amount of calcium from their diets. Women 51 and older are advised to get 1,200 milligrams of calcium daily, and foods like low- and nonfat milk, yogurt, and cheese are great sources of calcium. Women can get vitamin D from sunlight; certain foods, including fatty fish such as salmon and tuna; and vitamin D supplements.

Eat bone-healthy foods. The National Osteoporosis Foundation notes that recent research has found that blueberries, olive oil, soybeans and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids may promote bone health. Women also should know that even though certain foods may contain calcium that does not necessarily make them ideal for bone health.

Beans, for example, contain calcium, but they also are high in phylates, which can interfere with the body's ability to absorb calcium. Soaking beans in water for several hours before cooking them can reduce their levels of phylates.

Watch what you drink, too. It's not just foods that can contribute to osteoporosis. The beverages women drink also can affect their risk. Caffeine can decrease calcium absorption and contribute to bone loss, so drink beverages like coffee and caffeinated tea and soft drinks in moderation. Heavy alcohol consumption also can cause numerous negative side effects, not the least of which is bone loss, so women should only drink alcohol in moderation.

Update your fitness regimen. Women can strengthen their bones by including some high-impact weight-bearing exercises, which include dancing, hiking, jogging and jumping rope, in their fitness regimens. In addition, add some muscle-strengthening exercises, such as light weightlifting, to your routine. Yoga and Pilates also can make valuable additions to an exercise regimen, helping to improve balance and reduce the risk of falls, but women should discuss such exercises with their physicians before diving in, as some of the positions in yoga and Pilates may not be safe for older women at heightened risk of osteoporosis.
