"I did my research online for the practices in Arizona that offer varicose vein removal. I knew I wanted the EVLT treatment and wanted the procedure done by a Physician, not a cosmetic place. I narrowed it down to three Physicians and chose Dr. Sharma for his experience. I could not be more pleased with my experience at Arizona Vein & Laser Institute. Dr. Sharma is a wonderful physician. As he is performing the procedure, he explains what he is doing and is so concerned about making you feel comfortable. As for his staff, I cannot say enough good words. One thing I have learned in my lifetime is that your employees are only as good as you are. Dr. Sharma, you have a wonderful staff which says alot about you as an employer. I spent many office visits with them and every time they were pleasant, caring and professional. I was impressed by the way they worked as a team with Dr. Sharma. Thank you so much!" Joy A.

"I had called your office on a Monday morning to see if I could be fit in for an appointment as soon as possible because of a complication I had over the weekend. Being a new patient and never being seen at your office before it didn't matter because the woman who answered was not only kind, friendly and sypmathetic of my situation, but she was able to fit me in that very same afternoon. I have to say how incredibly impressed I was with the entire staff at this office but even more so with Dr. Sharma and Dr. Hecht. Their bedside manners are second to none. Thank you!" Scott Schrimp

Lift, Tighten and Tone Your Skin this Summer! We can all agree sagging skin is a sure sign of aging, especially when it’s concentrated around the jaw line, neck and eyes. Now there is a new generation skin-tightening device leading the way in the fight against sagging jowls, turkey necks, and tired eyes. is a non-surgical treatment designed to lift, tighten and firm the skin of the face and neck. It is drastically different in its tightening and lifting ability because it not only tightens skin, but also the deep muscular layers underneath. The same foundational layers typically addressed in a surgical face-lift.

Before

drives sound waves into skin and deeper support structures that tighten existing collagen, and stimulate more collagen growth over the next three to six months. This is the first non-surgical device to combine focused ultrasound energy that visualizes the area to be treated then accurately delivers pinpoint energy to multiple structural layers of collagen. is the first ultrasound technology to receive FDA approval for a non-surgical brow, jowl and neck lift. It is used on areas of the face and neck that address sagging of the cheek, jawline, marionette lines, chin as well as brows and eyelids. Single areas may be treated or full face and neck for a more complete lift. A visible lift is commonly seen immediately following the procedure, with optimal results occurring over three to six months. There are no pre or post treatment restrictions. No down time, surgery, incisions, injections or scars and it’s done in thirty to sixty minutes. Technology is providing amazing ways to stay safely looking young!

Together We Can Make a Difference...

“My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”~Psalm 73:26 Welcome to our May Issue! This month women worldwide will be celebrated for their roles in many lives. Many passages in the Bible reveal the role that God designed for women. These passages reveal many virtues of a woman committed to building a Godly legacy for her family. Here are a few bible verses to encourage you to fulfill God’s will. Proverbs 14:1 The wise woman builds her house, But the foolish pulls it down with her hands. 1 Timothy 2:9-10 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. Proverbs 31:30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Proverbs 31:20-21 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. Proverbs 31:26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. Matthew 6:33-34 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Proverbs 31:28 Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her:

Ephesians 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” Proverbs 11:16 A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong men retain riches. Psalm 128:1-2 Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways. For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee. Deuteronomy 4:9 Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. And teach them to your children and your grandchildren, Philippians 2:14-15 Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, Colossians 3:24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. Proverbs 31:25 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. Until next time, Wishing you a Happy Mother's Day!

Zerorez of Phoenix

Eco-friendly cleaning company puts family and community first “Certainly we are a business, but we are always fathers first – fathers who employ dozens of other parents across the Valley,” says Casey Ashdown, who founded Zerorez of Phoenix in his garage in 2004. “The idea of family permeates throughout everything we do.” With their children always top of mind, Ashdown and his business partner, Nathan Perrins, have grown Zerorez of Phoenix into one of the most successful cleaning businesses in Arizona while remaining firmly focused on making their kids – and families – proud. “We’re a very different kind of cleaning company and we are proud of that,” says Ashdown, who first got into the idea of launching Zerorez in the Valley from his brother, who worked for a Zerorez franchise in another state. “Unlike traditional carpet cleaning companies that use a method of hot water extraction using soaps, detergents and harsh chemicals, we saw firsthand how Zerorez and its ‘Empowered Water,’ was a better solution for cleaning,” he explains. According to Ashdown, in addition to the environmental benefits, the process also means no harsh smells and customers can walk on their carpet or tile shortly after cleaning without worry. When they first began, he couldn’t believe no one had launched the concept in Arizona and jumped at the chance, bringing in his brother-in-law in as a partner and to assist with marketing. Together, the brothers-in-law set out to bring the concept to reality, offering carpet cleaning as well as tile and grout cleaning; upholstery cleaning; area rug cleaning; pet odor treatment; hard surfaces cleaning and even mattress cleaning services across Greater Phoenix. “Thankfully, this idea of Empowered Water really resonated with our customers. After launching our facility in the Southeast Valley we were so proud to expand north two years ago,” says Ashdown, adding that the company also services customers in the West Valley. Zerorez’s growth under the direction of Ashdown and Perrins over the past decade-plus has not been just swift, but responsible, in another nod to making their children and families proud. “As we grew, we didn’t want to just add bodies to our business – and we didn’t just want to provide service to communities then be done with them until next time,” 14 May 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

says Perrins. “So, we made a conscious effort to find ways to give back, not to mention ways for our rapidly expanding team to work together for the greater good.” One of the most effective programs they put into place is the Rezoteer Volunteer Program. “The Rezoteer Volunteer Program provides our Zerorez staff and their family members a way to get involved with volunteer projects in their local communities and to share in the benefits of giving back alongside their co-workers,” says Perrins. “In just the past couple of months our team has donated more than 120 hours to local causes and charities in need including Sunshine Acres, Save the Family, Gilbert Parks and Recreation and Feed My Starving Children.” Oftentimes, adds Perrins, they find ways for employees to bring their own families along to volunteer as well. Ashdown and Perrins also developed the Zero 2 Hero Program, which helps to raise critical funds for organizations serving children throughout the Valley. “March was a big one for Zero 2 Hero. Throughout the month, a portion of our cleaning fees benefited the Phoenix Children’s Hospital [PCH], raising $5,000, which we donated in April,” says Ashdown. “Altogether, we’ve been able to collect a more than $25,000 for PCH over the past five years, with all the funds being used to directly impact research and care for the children at the hospital.” For Ashdown and the Zerorez team, this cause is especially personal. Visit the Javelinas at the Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park! By Kristy Morcom

Javelinas are not like the typical pig you see on a farm, this native creature is much slenderer and weighs between 40-60 pounds. Javelinas have been known to run as fast as 35 miles per hour. This is impressive as they have just three toes on each hind foot! The majority of their diet consists of insects, roots and fruits; however, their favorite snack is prickly pear cactus and agave. At Wildlife World our Javelina can be seen in Adventure Land, along with our 100-plus new animals from North, South and Central America that now call Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park their new home. Stepping Stones of Hope A local nonprofit provides a fun, safe place for grieving kids

Finding a place where you are understood is part of life’s journey for any child. However, this can be especially difficult for children who have experienced the loss of a loved one. Helping a grieving child is never easy, but there are many things a surviving parent or family member can do to help. Research shows that close to one in 20 children will have a parent die before they graduate high school. This means even more children will experience the death of someone they love dearly, such as a sibling, grandparent, family member, close friend or caregiver. Experts advise to answer younger kids’ questions honestly and give teens some space to grieve independently. While those are good and helpful tips, one of the best ways to help grieving kids and teens is for them to spend time with kids like them—kids who have also experienced the death of someone close to them. “What we do isn’t therapy,” explains Stepping Stones of Hope Board President Diane Raden. “Not everyone who grieves needs therapy, but you do need something. What we do is make a profound difference in the lives of these kids and families by offering them a safe place to meet others who are also grieving. We help dispel many misconceptions about grief and provide tools to help them learn to cope and successfully continue on their life’s journey no matter what their age may be.”

When it comes to grief, Stepping Stones of Hope identifies a need and figures out a way to address it. In 1999 Camp Paz began serving grieving children and their families in a camp setting. Today, the nonprofit hosts more than seven camps annually and a grief support group once a month at its Phoenix office. From day programs to weekend camps, the organization aims to provide a variety of formats and programs to fit campers’ needs. Each camp is unique in its activities and focus, but every camp helps children and adults take another step forward in their healing journey. “At camp, kids actually have fun and laugh,” says Raden. “Believe it or not, camp is not gloomy and depressing. This happens to be the biggest misunderstanding about camp. Of course there are a few tears, sharing and remembering, but we point campers in a new direction and give them newfound hope.

Often the underlying symptoms are associated with prematurity, autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, congenital heart disease, cystic fibrosis, Down syndrome, developing children who are picky eaters, as well as a number of other feeding difficulties. United Cerebral Palsy of Central Arizona (UCP) is responding to the needs of these children by expanding its Feeding Clinic to downtown Phoenix. The innovative program will open at its newest location on Seventh Street and Roosevelt Road this month. The UCP Feeding Clinic is unique to other resources as it uses a coordinated team approach that is individualized and based on the needs of the child and family. UCP Feeding Clinics are currently accepting referrals for evaluations to be completed at its north Phoenix location and ongoing services can be provided at either location. Earning this prestigious award, which is celebrating is milestone 100th anniversary in 2016, is somewhat equivalent to becoming an Eagle Scout. While both achievements require developing and completing a service project, Girl Scouts must create a project that is sustainable and continues to give back to the community long after she moves on. Overall, the process usually takes 18 to 24 months and often involves seeking in-kind donations and recruiting volunteers. For many of these girls, this award is the culmination of more than 10 years in the Girl Scouts. Together, the 32 girls who have earned the Gold Award have given more than 2,500 volunteer hours to complete their Gold Award projects.

The Low Down on High Blood Pressure Be it at work or at play, we put pressure on ourselves to perform each and every day. But that is nothing compared to the pressure being put on our hearts. And, while we can take a vacation, meditate or exercise to alleviate the pressure in our daily lives, our heart has no such luxury. If you don’t take the time to understand your own blood pressure, you run the risk of developing a stroke, heart attack, heart failure, erectile dysfunction, aneurysm, kidney damage, atherosclerosis (fatty buildup in the arteries) and even vision loss. May – High Blood Pressure Education Month in the United States – is the perfect time to understand your own numbers, risk factors and proactive ways to help get your blood pressure under control.

What is blood pressure? Blood pressure is the force of blood on the walls of the blood vessels as blood flows through them. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), this pressure naturally rises and falls during the day, but when it is consistently too high, it is considered high blood pressure. The medical term is hypertension. Blood pressure measuring 120/80 is considered in the normal range. If your blood pressure is closer to 120-139 systolic or 80-89 diastolic, you are considered to have prehypertension. If your blood pressure is above 140 systolic or above 90 diastolic, you are considered to have high blood pressure, or hypertension.

explain why you need to know – and care – about your blood pressure numbers. Imagine your blood vessels are a balloon. Now take that balloon and fill it with air, which represents your blood flowing through the vessels. If you stop blowing, everything is fine. Think of this as a normal blood pressure reading. But if you continue to blow air into the balloon, the walls of the balloon will expand, getting thinner and weaker in the process. Think of this as hypertension – pushing your blood vessels to the limit. Eventually, if you continue to blow and create more pressure – that balloon will pop. Like the balloon, your heart and blood vessels can only take so much.

Why does blood pressure matter?

How can I combat high blood pressure?

Sometimes, numbers are just that – numbers on a page or screen.

While there are certain causes of high blood pressure – including race, heredity and age – that might be out of your control, there are several immediate steps you can take to lower your blood pressure.

For those of us who are more visual, let’s paint a picture to 26 May 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

Smoke alert: You know smoking is bad for you. But just how bad is it? In addition to being linked to 90% of all lung cancer cases nationwide and taking – on average – 10 years off of one’s life, every single cigarette smoked temporally raises one’s blood pressure and heart rate. Quit smoking. Quit today. Quit forever.

Pass the salt: An unhealthy diet, like with so many other diseases, plays a central role in the development of high blood pressure. High-fat foods can certainly contribute to one’s high blood pressure, but salty foods – or if you regularly add additional salt to your food – are especially dangerous. The American Heart Association reports that as much as 40% of high blood pressure can be directly linked back to heavy salt intake. The organization also notes that that in addition to raising one’s blood pressure, years of overindulging in salt and salty foods can physically break down the blood vessels themselves. Avoiding high-sodium foods including lunch meats, canned and pre-packaged meals and salted nuts is a great way to start limiting one’s salt intake. Another tip – remove the salt shaker from your kitchen table when eating at home. And when dining out, simply ask the server to remove it from the table to avoid temptation.

Hold the potatoes (the couch variety): Chances are high that your job forces you to sit a large portion of the day. And after work, you are tired! But, inactivity puts you on the fast track to a weak heart. Simply adding 30 to 60 minutes of cardiovascular activity – including brisk walking, aerobics, jogging, swimming or biking – to your regular schedule on most days of the week is the fastest and easiest way to lower high blood pressure. Our hearts beat approximately 100,000 times a day, and without your help, they may “quit” sooner than you’d like.

Effective Ways to Reduce Asthma Attacks Millions of people — 25.9 million in the United States alone — have asthma, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. Asthma has become increasingly prevalent in all sex, age and racial groups since the early 1980s. It is one of the most common and costly diseases, and still has no cure. Swelling of the airways occurs when a person has asthma. This can result in wheezing, coughing and tightness in the chest. For those who cannot find relief, asthma attacks can prove deadly. Although there is no way to prevent asthma, by following a plan, there are ways to lessen the frequency and severity of attacks. Most of these tips involve reducing contact with allergens that can trigger asthma attacks.

Home First, assess your house to identify and reduce common allergens. • Wash linens and clothing in hot water to kill off any dust mites. The water temperature should be at least 130 F.

• Avoid smoking areas outside of stores and office buildings.

• If pets trigger a reaction, keep companion animals off of furniture and beds where they can leave fur and dander behind. Limit the rooms in which pets can stay. There is some research that states children exposed to animals early in life may actually be less likely to develop allergies and asthma.

• Know the office cleaning schedule and work around those hours. In some instances, cleaning products and other chemicals can trigger attacks.

• Put allergy-proof covers on pillows. • Vacuum at least twice a week with a HEPA air filterenhanced vacuum cleaner. • Reduce humidity around the house, as it can lead to the prevalence of mold. Mold is a common asthma trigger. That means using a dehumidifier, keeping bathrooms clean and dry and repairing any leaks promptly. • Insist that people who smoke tobacco products do so outside of the house. Secondhand smoke has been shown to increase the development of asthma and other chronic respiratory illnesses, says the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.

Outside, work and school You may have less control over allergens outside of the home, but there are still ways to cut down on attacks. 28 May 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

• Keep stress at a minimum because intense emotions can bring on asthma symptoms, according to Paul Ehrlich, M.D., coauthor of Asthma Allergies Children: A Parent’s Guide. • Check the air quality outdoors before venturing outside. Stay inside during ozone alerts or when the air is very humid or stagnant. • Seasonal allergies and asthma often go hand-in-hand. Check pollen, mold and ragweed counts. Stay indoors on peak days. • Be sure physical education teachers are aware that gym class may trigger asthma attacks in your children, and that they should look for apparent symptoms. In addition to these tips, a rescue inhaler can help quiet a potential attack. Keep medication available at all times. Plus, speak with a doctor about customizing an attack prevention plan even further. More information is available at www.aaaai.org.

Recognize the Risks to Drinking Water

By MS

As environmental issues continue to garner more attention across the globe, certain concerns that represent the public’s collective unease continue to emerge. Contamination of drinking water has long been a hot-button issue, and one that was once again being brought to the forefront in 2015. In 1993, the town of Hinkley, Calif., became national news when legal clerk Erin Brockovich investigated the apparent cluster of health illnesses in the community. She found there was a link between those illnesses and the local water supply and its high levels of hexavalent chromium — a carcinogen — which had purportedly been leaching into the water from a natural gas transmission compressor station since 1952. Contaminated water from cooling towers was stored between uses in unlined ponds, which allowed it to seep into surrounding groundwater. Contaminated drinking water is not exclusive to California. Water contamination can occur anywhere in the world. Recently, the subject has come into the limelight again, this time in Flint, Mich. Residents of Flint had been noticing strange health symptoms, including hair loss, rashes, abdominal pains, and even stunted growth. Upon further examination, it was discovered that residents of Flint were slowly being poisoned by lead, which may have been initiated when the city’s water supply was switched from Detroit’s water system over to the Flint River in 2014. The maximum concentration of lead allowed by law is 15 parts per billion (ppb). Tap water measured from Flint was nearly 400 ppb. According to the World Health Organization, the neurological and behavioral effects of exposure to excessive levels of lead are believed to be irreversible. Based on the news coming out of Flint, many people have expressed concern about what is hiding in their own water supplies. Nearly 286 million Americans get their tap water from a community water system, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, while others rely on well water. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that the United States has one of the safest public drinking water supplies in the world. Worldwide, things have begun to look up as well. In 2015, 91 percent of the world’s population had access to improved drinking water, says the WHO. That doesn’t mean individuals shouldn’t remain cautious. Contaminated water can transmit diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio. It also may be hiding potentially cancer-causing substances — both natural and manmade.

Those who want to be proactive in protecting their communities from contaminated water can follow these tips.

Get drinking water tested. Find a reputable local laboratory that specializes in testing drinking water. Start by calling the water authorities where you live or in surrounding towns, which may have a list of local, independents labs. The EPA may be able to help as well. Contact their safe drinking water hotline at 800.426.4791. Install a water filter. Water filters may be connected to the main water source in a home or attached to faucets. These devices can help filter out any other impurities that may be affecting the taste or quality of drinking water. Watch groundwater contamination. Be cautious about

what you release into the soil in and around your home, especially if you rely on well water. County health departments may test for nitrates and bacteria, but you may require more in-depth testing from an outside service if you suspect a problem.

Get connected with municipal alerts. Water-main breaks and other instances may require the shutting off and flushing of municipal water systems, which may introduce contaminants. Always follow suggested waterboil and cleaning guidelines issued in your area. By heeding these tips, residents can protect themselves against contaminated drinking water. azhealthandliving.com | May 2016

Body Dysmorphic Disorder A reality for many women

People from all walks of life may have something about their appearances that upsets them. While many people learn to embrace their bodies, some develop body image problems that can lead to depression and anxiety. Body dysmorphic disorder, or BDD, is a psychological condition that causes delusions about one’s outward appearance. While people with BDD may have delusions about any part of their bodies, many people with BDD have problems with parts of their face, their ears or the shape of their head. Preoccupation with these features can be so intense that it’s difficult for sufferers to see beyond their delusions. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, BDD may be triggered by a slight physical imperfection. But to those with the condition, the flaw is perceived to be prominent — causing severe emotional distress and difficulties in daily functioning. BDD is not exclusive to women as it affects nearly as many men as women. Research conducted by Butler Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, found that, among 188 subjects, BDD diagnosis was relatively equal among women and men (49 and 51 percent, respectively). Women with BDD were found to be more preoccupied with skin, weight and their hip size, while the men studied were concerned about thinning hair, body build and genital appearance. BDD usually develops in adolescence, according to the BDD Foundation. This is a time when people become more sensitive about their appearances. Recognizing the symptoms of BDD can help a person get help more quickly, which can potentially head off harmful behavior, including suicide attempts. The following are some of the more common symptoms of BDD, according to ADAA: • Camouflaging (with body position, clothing, makeup, hair, hats, etc.) • Comparing body parts to others’ appearance • Seeking surgery • Checking in a mirror • Avoiding mirrors • Skin picking 30 May 2016| azhealthandliving.com

• Grooming excessively • Exercising excessively • Changing clothes excessively Those with BDD also may experience symptoms similar to those experienced by people with obsessive-compulsive disorder or social anxiety disorder. In many instances, people with BDD may suffer from a combination of mental health disorders. There are some effective treatments for BDD. Such treatments include cognitive-behavioral therapy, or CBT, which teaches patients to recognize and change negative thinking patterns. Antidepressant medications may be prescribed as well. People who suspect they or a loved one is suffering from BDD should first visit their general practitioners. Social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists may also help people with BDD.

Six Myths Associated With Menopause

By MS

At some point in a woman’s life she will enter into a period called menopause. Unlike what the name might suggest, menstruation does not “pause” upon entering menopause. Rather, it ceases to occur from this point on, ending the fertile, reproductive time for females. The North American Menopause Society (NAMS) says menopause typically begins around age 51. It also may be induced through medical intervention at an earlier age. Women are encouraged to discuss menopause with their healthcare providers so they can better understand their bodies. That’s especially important since certain myths about menopause still prevail.

Myth #1: Menopause is a disease. Menopause is an

inevitable part of aging and a process that occurs naturally and spontaneously. Menopause affects each woman differently. While some women struggle with any number of symptoms, others may feel as if their lives have not changed much at all since entering menopause.

Myth #2: Menopause happens suddenly. Women do not

wake up one day and discover they have entered menopause. Doctors at the Menopause Center at Texas Children’s Hospital’s Pavilion for Women say that menopause is characterized by a subtle fluctuation of hormones that will gradually lead to menopause. Unless menopause results from a hysterectomy procedure or another medical intervention, it should happen slowly over the course of a few years. The period leading up to a last menstrual period is called perimenopause.

Myth #3: Perimenopause eliminates pregnancy risk. A

woman is not totally protected from an unplanned pregnancy until a year has passed since her most recent menstrual cycle. Even if periods are infrequent or unreliable, the NAMS advises that women choose another effective method of birth control if they do not want another pregnancy.

Myth #4: Menopause means gaining weight. Many women

gain weight after menopause, and hormonal changes can affect the body’s metabolism. However, weight gain can be controlled. A 2003 study from researchers at the Department of Epidemiology, Graduate School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh studied 535 premenopausal women who were followed throughout menopause. The study discovered that, after five years, women were able to

remain at or below their baseline weight by following a strict diet and exercising regularly. Women generally need to cut their calorie intake by 200 calories after reaching menopause to keep weight down.

Myth #5: All hormone replacement therapies are the same. NAMS says it is now believed that women who have had a hysterectomy can take estrogen alone, but those who still have a uterus need progestogen added to protect against endometrial cancer. Doctors can work with women to customize hormone replacement therapies to reduce risks.

Myth #6: Hot flashes are unavoidable. Hormonal shifts

trigger hot flashes in many menopausal women. However, hot flashes may vary in frequency and intensity depending on the individual. The first two or three years of menopause tend to be the worst for hot flashes. After those initial two or three years, hot flashes may lessen in intensity or become less frequent. Menopause can be a confusing time for women as it involves changes to the body women have not yet experienced. Women can combat that confusion by discussing their symptoms or concerns with their physicians. azhealthandliving.com | May 2016

Q. What is Cutera EXCEL V™ and how does it work for vein treatment? A. Excel V™ is a new laser system for

providing treatment of a variety of vascular and benign pigmented skin conditions, safely and effectively. Many skin conditions manifest in the form of broken or abnormal blood vessels in the skin, as is the case with rosacea, in which the facial blood vessels dilate excessively causing redness and flushing. Excel V™ treats vascular conditions by administering a unique high power green laser that is absorbed by the abnormal blood vessels in the skin. The laser heats the abnormal vessels causing the vein walls to collapse and seal shut. Over time, the vessels will no longer be visible. Several treatments may be necessary to achieve the desired result. The number of treatments depends on various parameters, including the size, thickness, and color of the vascular lesion. Superficial vascular lesions are usually easiest to treat; some patients might see significant improvement after just one treatment. Since individual results vary, ask your medical professional about your specific condition. After an initial consultation, your physician will determine if treatment with the Excel V™ is appropriate. Unlike other procedures, injections, or topical anesthesia are not required throughout the duration of the 15 – 30 minute procedure. Depending on the condition, the physician passes the Excel V™ hand piece over the affected areas of the skin until the abnormal vessels diminish. To minimize discomfort and protect the patient’s skin, the Excel V™ uses a proprietary cooling mechanism.

Q. What are my risks for developing Q. What eye diseases are a higher breast cancer?

A. One in eight women will be diagnosed

A. Diabetes related eye disease is a leading

A. If your child has any of the following

Cataracts are a clouding of the eye's lens. Cataracts develop at an earlier age in people with diabetes.

• Sleeps in an abnormal position • Snores • Sweats heavily during sleep • Is difficult to wake up • Has headaches • Is irritable • Falls asleep or daydreams in school • Wets the bed • Has been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

with breast cancer in their lifetime. Breast cancer is most common among women. It is the second leading cause of death among women, but is the most common cause of death among women worldwide. In the U.S., over 220 thousand women annually will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 40 thousand will die of the disease. Although rare amongst men, 2150 men will be diagnosed and 410 will die each year. There has been a gradual reduction in female cancer rates in women aged 50 and older. Perhaps secondary to a decline in prescribing hormone replacement therapy after menopause. Death rates have also seen a decline since 1990 due to better screening, early detection, increased awareness and improvements in treatment options.

cause of vision loss in Americans each year. Diabetic eye disease refers to a group of eye problems that diabetics may face as a complication of diabetes including cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

Glaucoma is typically caused from increased pressure in the eye that damages the optic nerve, causing vision loss. Diabetics are twice as likely to get glaucoma compared to other adults.

he/she could suffer from sleep-disordered breathing:

In children, sometimes the problem results from swollen tonsils and/or adenoids that block the airway. It can also be caused by dental problems because malocclusion (misalignment) of the teeth is believed to affect the positioning of the airway. Even swollen nasal passages could cause your child problems breathing during sleep. In these cases, it’s a good idea to talk to your child’s pediatrician, his dentist and an ear, nose and throat specialist.

Risk factors can be radiation exposure, high levels of the estrogen hormone, or a family history of breast cancer, especially if related to the BRCA2 gene.

The most common and potentially devastating to vision is diabetic retinopathy, which affects over 5 million adult Americans. Diabetic retinopathy is a condition in which the blood vessels in the retina become damaged. This damage is directly associated with high blood sugar. Damaged blood vessels leak fluid, blood and protein in the surrounding areas. This leakage may cause vision loss. Some studies indicate that 40-45 percent of people with diabetes have some form of diabetic retinopathy. Even with a diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy, many still have very good visual function because of the treatments that are available.

Breast cancer can exhibit the same symptoms among men and women, including a lump. Anyone who detects anything unusual about their breasts, male or female, should contact their physician immediately. Early detection of breast cancer increases treatment options and often reduces the risk of dying from breast cancer.

An eye examination is the only way to detect diabetic changes. Diabetics should have their eye examined a minimum of once a year. An optometrist or ophthalmologist performing a routine eye examination with dilation can diagnose any diabetic changes inside the eye and recommend treatment if indicated.

When our children have trouble sleeping, it affects their lives, their health and our relationships with them. Be on the lookout for the signs such as crabbiness, tiredness, headaches and other, as well as any possibility of ADHD. This could be a sleep-disordered breathing problem, or simply a problem sleeping. It deserves the attention of your child’s pediatrician, dentist, ENT and you.

If your child is sleeping poorly and it isn’t due to a sleep-disordered breathing problem, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends a relaxing setting at bedtime— low lights and quiet. Don’t substitute watching television or videos for personal interaction with your child before bedtime.

Q. What are the treatment options of fibromyalgia?

Q. How can I combat the signs of aging Q. I have a lot of prescribed dental work to do. Where do I start? with resurfacing laser technology?

A. Fibromyalgia or fibromyalgia syndrome

A. Regardless of age, having a beautiful complexion is something everyone strives for. However, over time, environmental factors can wreak havoc on our skin's complexion, creating wrinkles, age spots, scars and discoloration.

(FBS) is defined as “a chronic pain condition by multiple tender points of the body.” Pain starts from the muscles, tendons and ligaments, irritated by slight pressure. The common complaints of fibromyalgia patients include fatigue, widespread pain and trouble sleeping. According to research from the Mayo Clinic, the chance to develop fibromyalgia increases with age. Fibromyalgia is more likely occur in women. During office visits, patients usually report they are hurting everywhere on the body and are extremely tired. The laboratory tests and image tests often show normal results. The conventional treatment of fibromyalgia is emphasizing treating symptoms by using different medications and physical therapy such as specific stretching exercises combined with hot and cold therapy for pain and muscle relaxation. Alternative treatment such as acupuncture may be effective for fibromyalgia pain management. Research from the Mayo Clinic has shown that acupuncture significantly improved symptoms of this complicated condition. According to the principles of acupuncture and Asian medicine, fibromyalgia syndrome is viewed as a disease condition belongs to the category of Bi syndrome also known as obstructive pain syndrome. If certain energy pathways (meridians) in the body are affected due to invasion of the pathogenic factors such as heat, wind and cold, the flow of vital energy also known as Qi (chee) is blocked or disrupted, which weakens the body’s immune and self defense function. The blockage of Qi leads to the chronic pain symptom of the muscles, tendons and the joints. There is a famous Chinese Proverb: “free flow, no pain, no free flow: pain.” –Dr. Qiu Kukurin Chiropractic, Acupuncture & Nutrition Network 623.972.8400

Time and stress can make the signs of aging more prevalent, especially on the face and neck. Options to improve our skin’s appearance have become attainable through modern skin resurfacing laser treatments, which can help by removing the damaged outer layers of the skin. For those who are seeking a solution to aging skin, laser resurfacing treatments can help unveil the healthy, glowing skin underneath by encouraging new healthy skin cell growth hiding under layers of damaged skin. Medical aesthetic clinics offer a variety of options to those who are seeking a longterm solution to the signs of aging skin. Laser resurfacing treatments are highly concentrated beams of light that work to improve the texture, tone and appearance of the skin. Treatments can minimize fine lines and wrinkles, treat brown spots, and reduce redness and discoloration. These treatments can also encourage collagen production and tighten the skin leaving the signs of aging a thing of the past. Depending on the severity of your needs, cosmetic procedures such as ablative lasers and non-ablative lasers can also be used to assist with removing and reducing the signs of aging. Visit with your doctor to learn more about treatment options to determine the best laser resurfacing applications for your skin.

A. When your dentist prescribes treatment, such as a filling or crown on multiple teeth, it can be overwhelming. You’ll want to work with an office that can help you prioritize your treatment. Those that are the most critical would be scheduled first. Those things that can wait would follow. The office should also be keeping close track of your insurance benefits to know when you have maximized your benefits. Some things, if able, will need to be put off until the next calendar year to utilize your benefits. Q. What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a “deep” cleaning? A. In order to insure optimal gum health your hygienist will check for pockets in your gums. We call it probing. Any number greater than 3 mm cannot be reached with a toothbrush or floss. In order to remove tartar build up, an instrument is used to go below the gum line. This procedure is called scaling and root planing or “SRP.” Once these pockets are cleaned and the bacteria is eliminated you will need to maintain your gum health. Your future cleanings are then considered “periodontal maintenance” rather than a regular “prophy.” Insurance will now classify you under the “periodontal maintenance” category due to the fact you have bone loss. You cannot receive a regular prophy any longer. The cleaning may feel the same but there is extra effort in maintaining the health of your gums and avoiding further bone loss.

Q. What is tinnitus and is there treatment? Q. Is there any one facial procedure that will address all of my skin concerns A. Some of us respond differently than A. Tinnitus refers to an individual's perception of a sound when there is no external sound with noticeable results?

Q. What is pharmacogenetics?

others to the same medications or vitamins that we take, or we may experience different side effects from drugs. The way we respond can be due to the genes we have inherited. Most drugs are broken down (metabolized) in the body by various enzymes. In some cases, an active drug is made inactive (or less active) through metabolism. In other cases, an inactive (or less active) drug is made more active through metabolism. The challenge in drug therapy is to make sure that the active form of a drug stays around long enough to do its job. However, some people have variable enzyme action so that they may metabolize the drug too quickly or too slowly or not at all — meaning that the drug may not produce its intended effect or it may remain in a person's system too long and may lead to side effects.

Pharmacogenetics is the study of genetic variability that causes individual responses to medications. By analyzing the genes that produce the specific drug targets or enzymes that metabolize a medication or are associated with immune response, a doctor may decide to raise or lower the dose or even change to a different drug. One very interesting example of pharmacogenetics is with folate (aka vitamin B-9). Some people have a genetic mutation in the MTHFR enzyme that does not allow methylation of folate thereby rendering it active in the body. So taking Lmethyl folate instead of regular folate will likely bypass this problem. Folate is important in serotonin (depression symptoms), cardiovascular health, cancer prevention, prenatal health and much more.

Q. What is one of the most rare animals Q. My Medicare Advantage plan has you have at Wildlife World Zoo? a 4 star rating, what does that mean? A. At Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & A. Star ratings are determined by CMS (Medicare) Safari Park we have more than 6,000 animals and more than 800 species. However, one of our most rare animals at Wildlife World is the Pileated Gibbon. Currently, there are only two public institutions in the country, including Wildlife World, that have this species of gibbon.

This rare and beautiful monkey is found in parts of Eastern Thailand, Western Cambodia, and Laos. All species of gibbon are endangered and their unfortunate decline in numbers is due to habitat loss, hunting, and illegal pet trade. Male Pileated Gibbons are black and white and females are a silvery grey; both have shaggy, dense fur and a ring of shaggy white hair around their head. These monkeys spend their days lounging and gracefully exploring the treetops in search for leaves, fruit, shoots and insects. With a total of 12 Pileated Gibbons in the U.S., our efforts of increasing the pileated population are paying off. The recent birth of a pileated gibbon here at Wildlife World has increased the pileated population by 9 percent! Visitors can come out and see our very social Pileated family, which resides next to our endangered White Handed Gibbon family.

One of the many ways Medicare gathers criteria to determine a star rating is from the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey. The overall rating combines scores the plan receives for “quality of care.” Although there are several topics monitored and reviewed, they mainly fall into five general categories: Keeping members healthy: Includes providing screenings, tests, vaccines and check-ups to maintain or improve a member’s health. Managing chronic (long-term) conditions: This includes how often members with different conditions have access to tests and treatments that help them manage their condition. Member experience: This category determines the member’s overall satisfaction with the plan. Member complaints: Medicare monitors how often a complaint is filed and what kind of problem the member experienced. Customer service: This includes but is not limited to how well and how timely the plan handles member appeals.

Due to their high intelligence and social Because of the many measures and criteria behavior, monkeys continue to entertain and CMS monitors, members are provided the ability to review a plan’s performance on an inspire people of all ages. annual basis. The 411 on Mother’s Day Flowers Mother’s Day is an annual holiday that honors motherhood and provides an opportunity for men, women and children to show their mothers how much they appreciate them. The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908 when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived. While Mother’s Day traditions have changed since Jarvis first proposed the holiday, many people feel it’s customary to give mothers gifts on Mother’s Day. Flowers make for popular Mother’s Day gifts, and well wishers who want to give the special women in their lives flowers this year can consider a host of varieties.

Carnations: Carnations are popular Mother’s Day flowers, perhaps because they are available in a number of colors. That means it’s highly likely sons, daughters, husbands and others gifting moms this Mother’s Day can find some carnations in Mom’s favorite color. Ask your florist about what each carnation color symbolizes, as each has its own unique meaning. Pink carnations, for example, are believed to symbolize a mother’s love. Roses: Few mothers can resist roses, making them one of the more popular flowers come Mother’s Day. Roses are symbolic of love and make the perfect floral gift for mothers who like traditional flowers. If you want to spice things up, order a bouquet made up of roses of various colors. 44 May 2016

Daffodils: Yellow is synonymous with spring, and daffodils can highlight the season in which Mother’s Day takes place while also providing a cheerful look that’s perfect for Mother’s Day floral bouquets. Daffodils can be given on their own or added to mixed bouquets. Daffodils also last quite a while when cared for correctly, giving moms more than just a few days to enjoy their bouquets. Freesia: Like daffodils, freesia are long-lasting, meaning mothers will still be enjoying them long after Mother’s Day has come and gone. The inviting fragrance of freesia makes bouquets of these flowers popular choices for Mother’s Day gifts. Freesia also come in many colors, proving Mother’s Day gift givers a greater chance of finding flowers their mothers will love.

Five Simple Tips to Get Dinner on the Table By MS

The challenge working parents face in maintaining work-life balance is often compared to a juggling act. Finding time together, especially on weeknights when family schedules tend to be hectic, is no small task. But finding time together, particularly at the dinner table, can pay a host of dividends. According to the Family Dinner Project, studies have linked regular family dinners with higher grade-point averages and self-esteem in children, as well as lower rates of obesity and eating disorders in both children and adolescents. Cook, writer, activist and mother of two Katie Workman knows full well how difficult it can be to make nightly dinners together part of a family’s routine. Workman, whose latest book, Dinner Solved! (Workman Publishing), provides 100 family-friendly recipes and variations to ensure that everyone at the table is happy, relishes the opportunity to help others make family dinners a fun part of their nightly routines. To help even the busiest moms and dads find time for family dinners, Workman offers the following tips so parents can produce weeknight meals the whole family can enjoy.

Less is more. Don’t make yourself crazy trying to master a recipe with an endless ingredient list on a Wednesday night. Weeknight meals don’t have to be perfect or exotic. Even the simplest recipes can make for delicious meals. Change it up. Skip those time-consuming, last minute

trips to the grocery store for missing ingredients by replacing them with something similar that you already have on hand.

Get a head start on prep work. Whenever possible,

reduce the stress of weeknight meals by doing some of your meal prep long before dinnertime. Chop veggies for the week on Sunday nights or take a few minutes each morning to gather ingredients for that night’s meal.

Make it a family affair. Make weeknight meals more fun by involving the whole family. Parents can let the kids peel carrots or measure rice or perform other age-appropriate activities. Nightly family dinners help families build stronger bonds and weeknight meals need not be lavish undertakings. azhealthandliving.com | May 2016

Prolong the Life of Your Hair Color Men and women have been coloring their hair for centuries, experimenting with different materials and chemical combinations to achieve their desired looks. In the mid-1800s, chemists began to work with non-natural dyes for the textile industry. At least one of the chemicals used in a dye derived from coal tar formed a color when exposed to air. This molecule, called para-phenylenediamine, or PPD, eventually would go on to form the foundation for many permanent hair dyes. Both men and women color their hair, but women tend to be more avid colorists. Many women stick to a strict schedule of color maintenance, returning to the salon every four to six weeks for touch-ups. At an average cost of between $50 and $80 for a single-process permanent color, the price of keeping color looking fresh and vibrant can add up. It’s understandable that women would be interested in prolonging the life of their color to help stretch out their budgets. Explore the different ways to extend the life of hair color and enjoy healthier-looking locks.

Understand the difference between products. Hair color can come in different formulations. Semi- and demipermanent colors deposit color without lightening and will wash out gradually after a certain number of shampoos. Permanent hair colors use a combination of components to open up the hair cuticle so that natural hair color can be lightened and color deposited as well. Someone unsure of a color may want to try a semi-permanent formulation and then look to the permanent equivalent when satisfied so that the color will last longer.

don’t add color but help seal the cuticle so that existing color will not fade away. The Good Housekeeping Research Institute tested nine brands, including 24 products, and found most of the products, such as color shampoos, helped dyes last longer than regular shampoos.

down the thermostat in the shower. Hot water can cause the hair shaft to expand and lead to more dissolution of hair color molecules. Washing and rinsing with cool water can lock in the color longer.

Skip the sulfates. Sulfates are detergents used in shampoos that produce those lush suds many people equate with cleanliness. Sulfates can strip dyes from the hair and lead to premature fading. Use a color-extending product. Color-extending products

Head back to the salon. Some salons offer free or inexpensive glossing treatments. This 10-minute service can extend the life of your hair color. By following some easy hair care tips anyone can keep their color lasting longer. Clients should speak with their stylists if they need more direction and advice about hair color.

Keep Skin Healthy by Knowing Sunscreen Facts By MS

The best way to care for skin is to be smart about sun exposure. Although sunscreen is an enormous help, it is not foolproof. Sunburns and skin damage can occur even when using sunscreen, and user error accounts for much of that damage. To get the best results from any sunscreen product, consumers can educate themselves about proper application and avoid certain information inaccuracies.

Myth: I only need sunscreen on sunny days. The sun

can prove harmful even on cloudy days. You may not be safe indoors, either, particularly if you spend a good deal of time next to an open window. Window glass will only block certain types of UV light, making sunburn possible even if you are indoors or riding in a car. It's a good habit to apply sunscreen daily regardless of if you will be out in the sun.

Myth: Spray sunscreens are as effective as the rest.

Spray products may not deliver enough sunscreen to the skin because droplets are dispersed unevenly. Furthermore, the propellants used in spray sunscreens could be harmful if inhaled. Opt for sunscreens that are applied by hand and can be adequately coated over all areas of the skin.

Myth: Sunscreen does not need to be reapplied, especially if it's water-resistant. The Food and Drug

Administration recently prohibited the use of the term "waterproof" because consumers falsely believed their sunscreen products would not wash off. Water-resistant sunscreens will be effective for a certain number of minutes before they need to be reapplied, usually between 40 to 90 minutes. If you have been sweating profusely or have been in the pool or ocean for a while, play it safe and reapply often.

Myth: A little drop of sunscreen is all that's needed.

The average person needs about an ounce of lotion to cover his or her entire body. Think about the size of a shot glass and use that amount.

Myth: Spending more money on SPF 50 will get me superior protection. The rate of protection from SPF 30

to SPF 50 is marginal. SPF 30 (when applied correctly) can protect against 97 percent of UVB rays. That's adequate for many people. It's most important to choose a sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays. azhealthandliving.com | May 2016

Stay Safe When Exercising While Pregnant Exercise plays a vital role in long-term health. When combined with a healthy diet, exercise can help men, women and children lower their risk for injury and potentially debilitating diseases like diabetes and heart disease. Exercise can even pay dividends for women who are pregnant. Though women should always consult their physicians when designing exercise regimens while pregnant, the benefits to breaking a sweat while expecting can be significant. According to the Mayo Clinic, exercising while pregnant can help women alleviate some of the aches and pains associated with pregnancy. Many pregnant women feel pain in their backs and ankles, but exercise can ease or even prevent such pains, improving women's mood and helping them sleep better. Exercising while pregnant also helps women keep weight off, making it easier for them to return to their normal weight after giving birth. There are numerous benefits of exercising while pregnant, but it's still important that women not overdo it, as it can put both them and their unborn children at risk.

Make a daily effort. The American Congress of

Obstetricians and Gynecologists advises that pregnant women should strive for an eventual goal of moderateintensity exercise for at least 20 to 30 minutes per day on most or all days of the week. This exercise schedule should be adjusted as necessary should any complications arise, and women should make those adjustments after discussing the complications with their physicians. The ACOG notes that pregnant women who were sedentary before getting pregnant should follow a more gradual progression of exercise, slowly building up their exercise tolerance just as they would if they were not pregnant but wanted to become more physically active.

Choose safe activities. While it's important for pregnant women to remain physically active, certain exercises are safer than others. Safe exercises for women with uncomplicated pregnancies who regularly consult with their obstetricians include walking, swimming, stationary cycling, yoga and modified Pilates. Contact sports, including basketball, and activities that carry a high risk of falling, such as downhill skiing, gymnastics and off-road cycling, should be avoided. The ACOG also recommends that pregnant women avoid hot yoga or hot Pilates.

Employ the buddy system. The buddy system can ensure someone is there to help should pregnant women experience any adverse side effects while exercising. Pregnant 48 May 2016

women should always use spotters when strength training, and should never go for walks or jogs without a partner. Women can go one step further by keeping their mobile phones with them at all times and including their obstetricians' contact information on their phones and among their favorites so anyone who needs to contact them can do so quickly.

Know the warning signs that something might be amiss. It's important that pregnant women learn to

recognize the warning signs to discontinue exercise while pregnant. Women should discontinue exercise immediately and consult their physicians if they experience any of the following symptoms: · Vaginal bleeding · Amniotic fluid leakage · Labored breathing before exertion · Dizziness · Headache · Chest pain · Muscle weakness affecting balance · Calf pain or swelling · Regular painful contractions More information about exercising while pregnant can be found at www.acog.org.

How to Help Pets Maintain Healthy Weights By MS

According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), in 2014, an estimated 53 percent of dogs and 58 percent of cats in the United States were overweight or obese. Being overweight or obese can shorten pets’ lives by increasing their risk for insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease, cancer, and osteoarthritis. The APOP estimates that unhealthy weights can shave up to 2.5 years off of pets’ lives.

Is my pet too heavy? Weighing yourself and then weighing yourself while holding the cat easily weigh cats. Subtract your weight, and then you will know how much the cat weighs. Dogs require larger scales, and this is something best handled at a veterinarian’s office. Wellness visits provide more opportunities to get accurate assessments of pets’ weights. Vets can conduct visual assessments to determine if pets are maintaining healthy weights while also sharing information about the ideal weight for your particular animal. Cats’ and dogs’ waists should be visible when viewed from above. If your pet seems thick in the middle, chances are he or she can stand to lose some weight.

Increasing Activity Exercise and healthy eating are the keys to getting cats and dogs to shed some pounds (animals suffering from illness may need to pursue other avenues to weight loss). Ask the vet how much your pet needs to lose and the role that diet can play in helping your pet to lose weight. Reduce caloric intake accordingly until pets reach the weight vets recommend. Exercise is another key to healthy weight loss. Dogs can go out for walks or engage in other aerobic activity. It can be more challenging to get cats to exercise. Toys that play into a feline’s predatory nature, such as things they have or she has to hunt or chase, may inspire cats to move more. Overweight pets need exercise and changes to their diets in order to lose weight and extend their life expectancies. Consult your veterinarian for advice on how to help pets shed pounds they can keep off for years to come. azhealthandliving.com | May 2016

EXCEL & ACHIEVE

Be Safe, Healthy & Happy in the Workplace While Pregnant Congratulations, you are pregnant. The next several months are certain to include many changes as you prepare for the arrival of your child. Whether you have been pregnant before or are about to become a mom for the first time, each experience is unique. And while dealing with the unexpected is part of being pregnant, pregnant women should expect their employers to treat them fairly as they continue to work. The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant. While pregnancy is a natural occurrence and one female bodies can accommodate, in some instances, work requirements may threaten the safety or the health of the fetus. Therefore, employers are under a duty to accommodate female workers who may need to modify their duties due to their pregnancies. This can be a collaborative discussion, with both the employer and employee coming to a solution that works best for them. It is the employer’s responsibility to accommodate pregnant employees by removing barriers that may limit those employees’ ability to do their jobs. Each instance should be looked at individually. Under the Family and Medical Leave Act, women in the United States are entitled to 12 weeks maternity leave. Women can choose to use a portion of that maternity leave even before their children are born if physical limitations are making it challenging for them to continue working. Women should put their health and the safety of their unborn children ahead of their responsibilities at work. In addition, women should not hesitate to speak with their employers about their comfort levels while pregnant. If an issue arises, speak with your boss, who deserves the benefit of the doubt. 50 May 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

In some instances, breastfeeding also is protected by law at job sites or at the office. It is best for women to familiarize themselves with breastfeeding policies ahead of time so they can make the proper accommodations. Pregnant women should discuss with their doctors which work activities are permissible and which should be avoided at particular times in the pregnancy. Every effort should be made to avoid toxic substances and pregnant women should not lift heavy items or engage in any potentially risky physical activity. For more information about workplace rights, visit the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission at www.eeoc.gov.

Practical Gifts for Recent Graduates By MS

Electronics: A new tablet, laptop or desktop computer may make a great gift. If the price tag is a little high, consider pooling resources with other family members or friends and give electronics as a joint gift.

Noise-cancelling headphones: A set of durable headphones to block out ambient noise may be helpful for graduates going on to college or postgraduate work. Grads entering the workforce can enjoy silence or music as they commute to their offices. These headphones also work well on flights, making them ideal gifts for new grads whose first jobs require a lot of travel.

Home luxuries: Outfit soon-to-be college freshmen with

some of the niceties of home. Upgrade dorm furniture with accent pillows or a more comfortable mattress. Put together a luxury gift basket with a high-quality robe, electric razor, spa shampoo, and other toiletries.

Travel tickets: Travelers often gain new perspectives and

inspiration when visiting a city, state or country for the first time. Travel is good for future entrepreneurs and may help a person stand out in a long list of job applicants. According to Forbes.com, travel can help cultivate relationships outside of one’s existing network and provide ideas from others outside of graduates’ existing personal and professional circles.

New wardrobe: Gift cards to retailers that specialize in

business attire often make welcome gifts for new grads. Some students may need to update their wardrobes so they can look more professional on interviews or at school networking functions.

Luggage: A new suitcase or travel bag is quite handy for

students studying abroad. Choose durable luggage that can handle the rigors of travel so cash-strapped new grads have something they can rely on for years to come.

Money: Money remains a one-size-fits-all gift that can be

put to many uses. Invest in a graduate’s future by buying stock in a stable company, contribute to a college savings account or help grads begin paying back their student loans. Practicality can come in handy when buying graduation gifts. The best gifts are often those that graduates can put to good use. azhealthandliving.com |May 2016

Olivia Wilde

The busy mom continues to shine in Hollywood This Mother’s Day, Hollywood powerhouse Olivia Wilde has a lot to celebrate. The popular actress, producer, model and activist is not only working on several high level projects but she’s also busy as a doting mom to her 2-year-old son Otis. And, as several media outlets confirm, she can’t seem to get enough of her favorite little boy. “I'm just everyday more grateful and realizing how I have completely won the life lottery,” Wilde told ET reporter Katie Krause at a recent charity event. "It's just so clear to me at every stage of his growth, and my own growth as a mother." In fact, it’s her role as a mother that has inspired the “Vinyl” actress to use her star power to bring attention to causes impacting underserved families. According to ET, Wilde was recently honored for her work with Save the Children, “where she serves as an artist ambassador for infant, child, and maternal health.” “It just makes me realize how lucky I am," she told the magazine. “Because of that luck, I have a responsibility to help other mothers...I wanted to be helpful in some way." In addition to motherhood and her charitable work, Wilde is known for her roles on both the big and small screens. She has starred in “House,” “Tron: Legacy,” “Cowboys & Aliens,” “Her,” “Rush,” and more. She also has a main role in the HBO drama “Vinyl,” which was just renewed for a second season. 52 May 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

Wilde is also the co-founder of an ethically focused creative agency called Conscious Commerce and is the spokesperson for H&M's upcoming Conscious Exclusive collection, according to Mashable. “For me conscious just means 'with awareness,'" she told Mashable. “It's having some knowledge of whatever it is you’re dealing with. Now we are eating more consciously because we’re wondering where things are coming from. In terms of fashion, it's wondering how something was made, what was used to make it, who made it and what can I do to be less wasteful when I get rid of it. Consciousness is just living with a little bit more awareness.” Wilde dished to InStyle that it’s her role as a mom that pushes her to live an eco-friendly and conscious lifestyle. "I learned a lot from having a kid; when we're pregnant, suddenly everybody is very thoughtful about what they put on their skin, what we eat, or when we buy a mattress for a crib—it's now a given that you'd buy an organic one because you don't want flame retardant spray on the mattress," she revealed to InStyle. "But when it’s just about us, we're like 'Meh, it's just me, I don't mind sucking in fumes.' When it's for our child, the whole game changes." And, while Wilde recently shot down pregnancy rumors, she told PEOPLE that she is open to more children when the time is right. “I’m desperate for more [kids]!” Wilde told PEOPLE at a recent event. “I love my siblings so much and Jason [Sudeikis] has incredible siblings too. The more the merrier.” To keep up with Wilde, “like” her official page on Facebook at www.facebook.com/OliviaWilde or follow her on Twitter and Instagram at @oliviawilde. azhealthandliving.com |May 2016

How to Avoid Caregiver Burnout Caring for an aging or sick relative is not always so easy. In addition to the physical demands of caring for such loved ones, tending to sick people can take a mental toll, potentially contributing to a condition referred to as caregiver stress. Women are more likely than men to serve as caregivers to elderly or disabled adults. That increases their risk for caregiver stress, according to the Office on Women’s Health, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Mayo Clinic notes that caring for a loved one can strain even the most resilient person. It can be quite difficult to be a person’s sole caregiver and witness a loved one’s health deteriorate due to a debilitating illness. As the population ages, nearly 80 percent of the long-term care that takes place in the United States is overseen by people who are not healthcare professionals, including family members and loved ones. Caregiver stress can manifest itself in many different ways, including physical and emotional problems. The following are some ways to handle the stress of caring for a sick or elderly relative.

Investigate available resources. Explore all of the opportunities in your area that may relieve some of the burden of caring for your loved one. These may include inhome visiting care services, meal delivery, adult activity programs, and more.

Ask for help. Find out if responsibilities can be split among other family members, giving each person a chance to rest and recuperate.

Get physical. Physical activity in any form can help reduce stress and improve feelings of well being, offers the Alzheimer’s Association. Go for a walk, take an exercise class or ride a bicycle. Expect to feel more relaxed and less stressed after physical activity.

Speak with a therapist. Discuss your feelings with someone not directly related to your family or circle of friends. Caregivers may have feelings of anger, depression and anxiety, and may even be in denial about how much 60 May 2016

| azhealthandliving.com

care the person really needs. Talking about your feelings with a professional can put them into perspective.

Focus on things you can control. You may not be able to cure the illness or disability, but there are things in your control. Rather than dwelling on things beyond your control, try to improve the things you can control.

Try to have fun. It’s easy to make caregiving the only part of your life. However, you have to leave room for letting off steam. Don’t feel guilty about going out with friends or a spouse. Make time for yourself. Caregiver stress is a very real thing that negatively affects the health and well being of caregivers. Some simple coping methods can relieve some of that stress.

Moving is the best medicine. Keeping active and losing weight are just two of the ways that you can fight osteoarthritis pain. In fact, for every pound you lose, that’s four pounds less pressure on each knee. For information on managing pain, go to fightarthritispain.org.

How to Prepare a Home for Elderly Residents Upon reaching retirement age, new retirees may face decisions regarding their living arrangements. Some seniors may opt to stay put, while others may want to downsize their homes to save money and relieve themselves of the burdens of maintaining larger homes. But those are not the only situations seniors find themselves in. Some seniors realize they can no longer care for themselves without assistance. In such instances, seniors may opt for assisted living facilities or choose to move in with a relative, such as a grown son or daughter. While assisted living facilities are designed to meet the needs of the elderly, young men and women welcoming seniors into their homes may need to take on some home improvement projects to ensure their homes are as safe as possible for elderly residents.

Convert a room on the first floor into a bedroom. While this may not apply to all seniors, some men and women struggle with stairs as they age, and that can make it difficult for them to fully participate in a household. Homeowners with an extra room to spare can convert a room on the first floor of their homes into a bedroom so seniors won’t have to climb up and down stairs throughout the day. That ease of accessibility to the primary floor of the house encourages seniors to be active participants in a household. If possible, choose an area that is close to a first floor bathroom. Take steps to make bathrooms safer. The National Institute on Aging says that more than one in three seniors over age 65 fall each year, and 80 percent of those falls take place in the bathroom. Slippery tile floors can make it difficult for seniors to navigate bathrooms safely, and bathtubs and shower stalls present additional challenges. Install grab bars on bathroom walls and next to toilets to provide support. In addition, consider installing a shower chair or bench and removable shower nozzle in the shower or tub so seniors can sit down while they bathe and rinse without having to stand up on slippery surfaces. Make sure any mats around bathtubs and sinks are nonskid to reduce the risk of falls even further. Install an extra phone line or two. While kids and adults between the ages of 18 and 50 may never use the 62 May 2016

landlines in their homes, many seniors still rely on traditional telephones as their primary means of communicating with the outside world. Install extra landlines in your home, including in seniors’ bedrooms, so they can more readily access the phone should they fall and need to call for emergency help. Phones in seniors’ bedrooms may also provide some additional privacy to seniors who don’t want to carry on phone conversations in busy areas of the home, such as the kitchen or living room. Such lines may also reduce feelings of isolation.

Prioritize accessibility when storing items. When storing groceries, books, magazines, or other items seniors are likely to use, choose locations that are accessible to seniors. Avoid storing items on the top shelf of pantries, bookcases or entertainment centers, as seniors with limited mobility may not be able to reach them.

Caring for Grandchildren

By MS

A study of data from the Rand Corporation found that, of the 4 million children living with their grandparents in the United States, 2.5 million live in three-generation households. Nearly 1.5 million live in split-generation households or ones in which grandparents are raising their grandchildren. Research suggests that split-generation households are usually formed when parents are no longer able to take care of their children because of physical or mental illness, substance abuse or economic problems. Three-generation households, on the other hand, are generally formed because of problems parents encounter living independently, such as through separation or divorce or due to unemployment or economic need.

Change Your Thoughts. Change Your Words. Change Your World. Sponsored by

Raising grandkids can be overwhelming for elderly men and women, but the following are a few tips that can make the process easier.

Explore your feelings. When you acknowledge your feelings, you are on the right path to making things work and recognizing possible obstacles. Expect mixed feelings from others. Grandchildren and your own children also may be apprehensive about this new living situation. Encourage everyone to share their thoughts and come to a consensus on how things will be done. Expect it to take some time to establish a schedule, and don't be discouraged by any initial behavioral problems. Take care of yourself. Grandchildren, particularly young

ones, can have a lot of energy and may require constant attention. Caring for such lively youngsters can be taxing on grandparents, who must make their own health and nutrition a priority. Give yourself some time for recreation and rest. Have grandchildren help where they can. Don't feel you have to spend every moment entertaining them.

Ask for help when needed. Reach out to friends or community members if you are feeling overwhelmed. There are a number of resources available to you, and many organizations, including AARP, have their own tips for assisting three-generation households. azhealthandliving.com | May 2016
