"I did my research online for the practices in Arizona that offer varicose vein removal. I knew I wanted the EVLT treatment and wanted the procedure done by a Physician, not a cosmetic place. I narrowed it down to three Physicians and chose Dr. Sharma for his experience. I could not be more pleased with my experience at Arizona Vein & Laser Institute. Dr. Sharma is a wonderful physician. As he is performing the procedure, he explains what he is doing and is so concerned about making you feel comfortable. As for his staff, I cannot say enough good words. One thing I have learned in my lifetime is that your employees are only as good as you are. Dr. Sharma, you have a wonderful staff which says alot about you as an employer. I spent many office visits with them and every time they were pleasant, caring and professional. I was impressed by the way they worked as a team with Dr. Sharma. Thank you so much!" Joy A.

"I had called your office on a Monday morning to see if I could be fit in for an appointment as soon as possible because of a complication I had over the weekend. Being a new patient and never being seen at your office before it didn't matter because the woman who answered was not only kind, friendly and sypmathetic of my situation, but she was able to fit me in that very same afternoon. I have to say how incredibly impressed I was with the entire staff at this office but even more so with Dr. Sharma and Dr. Hecht. Their bedside manners are second to none. Thank you!" Scott Schrimp

It’s not in your head.

Bring more pleasure back into your life &

BECOME A MORE INTIMATE YOU!

T

he loss of sexual pleasure and enjoyment is not in your head. Pregnancy, childbirth, perimenopause, menopause, and the natural aging process all have an impact on the appearance, tightness, and lubrication of a woman’s vagina. These

changes can all diminish a woman’s pleasure and desire for sexual intimacy. Lack of sexual intimacy can have a detrimental effect on a woman’s well-being, overall happiness, and contentment in a relationship-by both partners! Don’t let discomfort hinder your pleasure at any age. Additional benefits of the procedure are visible plumpness and improved aesthetic appearance as well as treatment of urinary leakage or stress incontinence. What do you do? Now there’s a pain-free, risk-free, non-surgical solution that brings immediate relief with no side effects. It’s ThermiVa-a better alternative to invasive and risky vaginal surgery, which is painful and requires a long, sex-free recovery period-not exactly the first step you want to take in rebuilding intimacy and sexual satisfaction. What is ThermiVa? ThermiVa treatments are administered in a series of three appointments, spaced 4 weeks apart. Each one is only about 30 minutes and requires no downtime afterward, women are able to return to normal activities as soon as they walk out and many report having improved intimacy that night with both parties noticing a difference! ThermiVa delivers comfortable controlled heat, generated by radiofrequency through a small proble. This heat causes tissues to contract and restores tightness, while stimulating the production of collagen to increase moisture and lubrication. Both of which lead to an improved vaginal appearance and function leading to enhanced intimacy, confidence, and ultimately satisfaction. This regenerated pelvic floor strength is also what aids in issues of urinary stress incontinence.

After all, what other treatment has a 100% patient satisfaction rating?

Diabetic Neuropathy, Peripheral Neuropathy Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, Plantar Fasciitis If you are suffering from lower back, buttocks and or leg pain or your feet or legs are cramping, numb or burning especially at night, you almost certainly have a condition which involves the nerves of the legs. The largest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve (pictured in red to the right), starts in the lower back, runs through the muscles of the buttocks and down to the tip of the toes. If this nerve gets irritated, you can experience really terrible pain anywhere along the course of the nerve. You may also experience burning, numbness and odd sensations in your muscles. Irritation of this nerve may produce severe cramping or crawling sensations in your muscles. Of course, your back and leg pain can be caused by a pinched nerve in your lower back. This can be from a vertebra that is out of place, it can be caused by a slipped disc or it can be caused by spinal stenosis or any combination of these problems. Each of these conditions, bad discs, spinal stenosis or displaced vertebrae have very different treatments. Knowing exactly why you have your back and leg troubles is absolutely essential for effective care.

Headaches, Vertigo, TMJ, Migraines, Sinus Headache Neck and Shoulder Pain, Pinched Nerves, Tennis Elbow and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Spinal Stenosis, Sciatica, Lower Back, Hip and Leg Pain

So how do you find results? The answer is called Integrative Neurology. Neurology is the study of the nerves. This allows us to diagnose tough nerve conditions like spinal stenosis, disc problems and neuropathy. What happens next truly separates our integrative neurology approach from anything else available to help correct lower back, hip, leg and foot problems. We have pioneered techniques to decompress nerves, but also use a number of natural substances that have been shown in recent scientific studies to help nerves re-grow and repair. There are no current drugs that can do this. But that’s not all. We combine special electrical stimulation techniques with acupuncture. A combination that has been shown to correct abnormal nerve function and promote nerve repair. There simply is no better or more comprehensive system for diagnosing and correcting the cause of spinal stenosis, neuropathy and other conditions that cause lower back, hip and leg pain and numbness. “Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift. ~2 Corinthians 9:15 Welcome to our December issue. As the holiday season is upon us, and we find ourselves reflecting on the past year, we must not forget the reason this is one of the most celebrated seasons.

Luke 2:14

Here are a few Bible verses to help you keep your focus on the spirit of the season.

Philippians 2:8-10

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

Matthew 2:10

James 1:17

When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Isaiah 7:14

Luke 2:10-12 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

Luke 2:15-16 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

1 John 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 15:13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. Until next time, wishing you and yours blessed, healthy and safe holidays!

God Bless You for Your Support! Here to serve,

Pinspiration: A Real Life Pinterest DIY Studio The most “Pin-teresting” place you will ever see If you are anything like me, your Pinterest boards are filled with hundreds (thousands) of beautiful, trendy and super organized projects just waiting to be made. Until you realize you don’t have the time, the supplies or the space to make any of them. That is until you find Pinspiration. Phoenix is home to the world’s first DIY Pinterest-inspired maker space, Pinspiration. The muse and owner of Pinspiration, Brooke Roe, developed the art studio and wine bar as a solution to a real-life problem after spending countless hours on Do-It-Yourself (DIY) craft-focused websites such as Pinterest with few finished projects to show for her time. Pinspiration quickly become the go-to spot for hip, creative families and a world-class venue for planning truly memorable and entertaining events. The space is trendy and inspiring, complete with an abundance of arts and crafts supplies, a splatter room with a glow in the dark option, a VIP private party room, and a bar. “I was on Pinterest all the time and, after awhile, started becoming frustrated with all of the projects I had pinned and nothing to show for my time,” says Roe. “I started talking to friends and asked, ‘If there was a place you could go and it was easy for you, do you think you would make those projects?’ and everyone said ‘Yes! What a great idea!’” She began researching barriers to creativity and output and found that lack of space, the expense of tools and/or specialty equipment, fear of failure, difficulty acquiring supplies and the daunting idea of cleaning up prevented

people from acting on their ideas, even when they were deemed high-interest and personally meaningful. “Most people don’t want to travel to three different craft stores to find the perfect wood or accessories,” says Roe. “Add that to cleaning up the mess after you finally have time to do the project, it really came down to it being a matter of convenience. I created Pinspiration in order to remove all the common barriers to creativity and make it easy for everyone to unleash their inner artist and ‘try DIY.’” Pinspiration offers both open-ended and tutorial-let art experiences and workshops in a supportive, playful venue. Customers have access to a variety of high quality art supplies and tools. The Pinspiration staff provides the tools, materials and a clean, inviting and inspiring place to put it all together.

“Life Without Limits”

UCP of Central Arizona expands resources for Valley families with disabilities When children and adults with disabilities need resources and support, they often turn to United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Central Arizona for its programs and services. Serving more than 3,500 families each year, UCP is committed to creating possibilities and nurturing opportunities for children and adults with disabilities, according to the organization. UCP provides speech, occupational, feeding and physical therapies, independent living services, inclusive and integrated educational based programs, innovative social opportunities, and research. In addition, UCP offers support to families as they face the daily challenges of raising a child or caring for an adult with a disability. UCP’s work changes lives each and every day, according to the nonprofit. One prominent reason they are able to provide innovative and ground breaking programs is thanks to their partnership with Circle K Stores of Arizona, cites a UCP spokesperson. Circle K Stores of Arizona has been a champion to UCP for more than 30 years, raising tens of millions of dollars for the organization. Through year-round, ongoing fundraising efforts at local stores and events throughout the state, the 2016 fundraising total was $5,704,370.25. The funds donated support UCP’s mission to help children and adults with disabilities, including cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism, sensory processing disorder, genetic disorders, torticollis, birth defects, effects of in-utero drug or alcohol exposure, head injuries, developmental delays along with other diagnoses that affect development.

“The UCP family is inspired and in awe of the generosity of Circle K’s leadership, its employees, customers and vendor partners. With Circle K’s unwavering support, UCP has been able to help thousands of children, adults and families receive the essential services they desperately need to live a life without limits,” says Armando Contreras, CEO of UCP of Central Arizona. “Circle K actively promotes a corporate culture that is deeply rooted in social responsibility, and without the dedication of Circle K, many in our community would be forced to go without the essential services they need to grow and thrive.” Donations were collected every day at Circle K’s throughout Arizona as employees asked customers to donate their extra change at the register to benefit families and children with disabilities. In addition to in-store efforts, Circle K’s Desert Klassic golf tournament helped raise a record of $850,000 for UCP of Central Arizona’s mission. Circle K also partnered with UCP of Central Arizona this year to open a new UCP Downtown location, including paying the lease until May 2017. Circle K’s unwavering support has helped UCP continue to be a leader in Arizona for serving those with disabilities, according to UCP. With a growing number of individuals and families

seeking and needing essential services in the Central Phoenix and East Valley regions of the county, this new location provides an ideal opportunity for UCP to outreach even further. “For over three decades, Circle K, our vendor partners and loyal customers have been committed and beyond proud to be a part of the miracles that happen every day at UCP of Central Arizona,” says Paul Rodriguez, vice president of the Arizona Division of Circle K. “Circle K is proud of our contributions and our commitment to the communities where we live and work. On November 1, Taylor was formally announced as the CEO of leading wealth management firm KeatsConnelly in Phoenix. With nearly $7 million in revenues, KeatsConnelly is the largest cross-border wealth management firm in North America that specializes in helping Canadians and Americans realize their dreams of a cross-border lifestyle. “Not bad for that once-small town girl,” Taylor says with a smile. “As you can imagine, given my own history and story, I have a passion for helping to ensure other girls and woman feel empowered to take control of their lives, especially in the areas of education and career.” This passion led Taylor to Soroptimist International of Phoenix in 2010. “The heart of the Soroptimist mission is improving the lives of women and girls through social and economic empowerment. Soroptimist International of Phoenix (SI) focuses its efforts on projects to assist women and children in the local Phoenix metropolitan area and globally through programs administered by Soroptimist International of the Americas,” says Taylor. According to Taylor, their membership representation ranges from presidents and other key executives of private companies to local, state and federal court judges, top local, state and federal governmental administrative staff, heads of civic and social service organizations, attorneys and accountants, to retired professionals. “Through our service projects, we generate thousands per year to support women and children in need via scholarships, grants and hands-on volunteering,” says Taylor, who just completed service as president of the organization and is well into her year as the immediate past president. 18 December 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

A major point of pride for Taylor over the past year has been the WISE program, wherein their team awards scholarships to high school girls in Arizona, Mexico and even Haiti, most recently awarding more than a dozen in these regions. “We have several fundraising events that help us to award these scholarships and to fun other projects, including a very special one in December – our fourth Annual Soroptimist Holiday Lights Tour,” she says. Set for December 15, the tour is hosted on the Real London Bus, which will be decorated and feature holiday music, sing-a-longs and even hot cocoa, and departs from Tempe Marketplace promptly at 6 p.m. Tickets start at just $25, with discounts available for children. Tips to Prevent & Treat Cold Sores This Winter As temperatures begin to plummet, outbreaks of cold sores may increase. Although cold weather is not entirely to blame for the colds and flu symptoms that seem to be more common from November through March, cold sores do seem to be linked to the temperatures outdoors.

Cold sore season An increase in cold sores is possible because the winter season tends to reactivate the HSV-1 virus responsible for the sores, according to Abreva. Exposure to cold temperatures as well as drastic temperature shifts, like moving from the cold outdoors into a warm house, can be traumatic enough to trigger a cold sore outbreak. Several different factors contribute to why cold sores are more likely to surface in the winter than during other times of the year. Harsh, winter winds can dry out the lips and make them more hospitable to the virus that causes cold sores. Dry, warm air in heated homes can encourage the virus to spread and break out more often. In addition, less vitamin D in the body and an immune system weakened by winter can increase a person's risk of developing a cold sore. Other notable cold sore triggers can be elevated in the winter. Planning for holiday celebrations can elevate stress, which is a trigger for HSV-1 outbreaks. The longer a person is feeling stressed, the more likely he or she will develop a cold sore. Illnesses, such as colds, flu and bacterial infections that seem to pop up when the weather is cold also can trigger cold sores. When the body is busy fighting one invader, it is more vulnerable from attacks by other bacteria and viruses. Inflammation in the body, like that which accompanies chronic arthritis, may overproduce the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol can suppress the immune system and trigger a cold sore attack. Those with arthritis and other inflammation issues may find winter weather exacerbates their symptoms. Some people may counteract dark days of winter by visiting tanning salons and exposing themselves to artificial UV rays. This can irritate tissues around the mouth and also lead to a cold sore outbreak. 30 December 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

What are cold sores? Cold sores are not merely pimples that spring up in and around the mouth. They're actually a type of herpes known as the herpes simplex virus-1, or HSV-1. This is a mild form of herpes that is a cousin to the more dangerous HSV-2. According to the National Institutes of Health, HSV-1 infects more than half of the United States population by the time they reach their 20s. The Mayo Clinic Says about 90 percent of adults worldwide - even those who have never experienced symptoms of an infection - test positive for the virus that causes cold sores. Cold sores, also called fever blisters, are fluid-filled lesions that occur on and around the lips. Cold sores are contagious and can be spread through close personal contact. There is no cure for HSV-1 infections, and blisters may appear sporadically. Cold sores are most contagious when they have fluid present, but infection also can occur when blisters are not visible. Once the herpes virus is contracted, it remains in the body forever.

Preventing cold sores A key way to prevent a cold sore outbreak is to avoid people who experience cold sores. Don't share utensils or food and avoid physical contact with the areas where a sore is present. If you have had cold sores before, look for ways to lower your stress levels, work to maintain a strong immune system, avoid harsh winter weather by wrapping your face in a scarf and keeping your lips moisturized to reduce your risk of another outbreak. In addition to prescription medication treatment for cold sores, supplementation with vitamin C, vitamin E and llysine may help.

Keep the Holiday Season Healthy, Safe & Secure

By MS

Just because it's Chanukah, Christmas or New Year's doesn't mean safety and security should not remain a top priority. The following guidelines can help families enjoy a holiday season that is healthy, safe and secure. Exercise caution when decorating. Decorations can be beautiful, but they also can be hazardous if not used properly. Overloading outlets is commonplace during the holiday season, but that can lead to home fires. Exercise caution around candles and other open flames. Pets may become tangled in wires or knock over glass ornaments.

Wash hands to prevent germs. The holidays also are about greeting friends and relatives, and embracing or kissing. Do not ruin the festivities by spreading germs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the holiday season is also flu season. The CDC recommends celebrants wash their hands with soap and clean running water for at least 20 seconds to remove germs. Keep track of curious children. Children are enamored with the sights and sounds of the holidays and may be more curious than ever during this time of year. The needles of holiday trees can cause painful cuts in the mouth and throat of a child who swallows them. Snow sprays may be harmful if the aerosol propellants are used improperly. Peanuts and popcorn used for decorating can pose potential choking hazards to young children. Be a smart host or hostess. Alcoholic beverages and holiday revelry sometimes go hand in hand. Responsible party hosts know when a guest has had too much and will arrange safe transportation home. Because kids imitate adults, many may drink the beverages they see adults drinking. Alcohol poisoning is a real risk for children, so pay attention to youngsters no matter how young they may be. Protect the home. Deter home burglars when traveling for the holidays by having neighbors keep a watchful eye on your house. Use motion-sensor lights, keep up the appearance that someone is home by having mail collected, and do not advertise any travel plans on social media. Investment in a home security system if need be. azhealthandliving.com |December 2016

CONNECT WITHIN

MIND, BODY & spirIT By Paula Renaye, a professional life coach and author of The Hardline Self Help Handbook, www.hardlineselfhelp.com

Five Tips to Surviving Holiday Gatherings For those of us from families built on Debbie Downer DNA, there’s only one direction a mood can go during holiday get-togethers and that’s down. Sure, the running negative commentary, bubble-bursting barbs, and rampant self-pity were funny coming from comedian Rachel Dratch on “Saturday Night Live’s” Debbie Downer sketches. But few of us can foresee our own Negative Nancys giving us a good belly laugh. Whether you’re the smiley face among frowners or a bit of a Depressing Dan yourself, there are tricks you can use to keep the table talk from getting lethal. You can take control simply by thinking about what you choose to say – or not say. If you hear yourself criticizing, judging, or complaining, you’re part of the problem. Happy, self-respecting people don’t find it necessary to dump on others to make themselves feel good. If someone else is the problem, simply don’t give them the ammunition they need. Instead, try these tactics:

Do not say anything negative. Period. And no onedowning! One-downing is the opposite of one-upping. It’s the art of coming up with something worse when someone else talks about their problem. No matter what negative thing anyone says, or how much you agree with it or don't, resist the urge to respond with a negative. Instead ….

Dodge, distract, and detour. Turn things around with a question – a positive one. If you need to, make a “happy list” of questions before you go, so you’ll have some at the ready. And remember, there's no law that says you have to answer a question just because someone asked it. With negative people, it’s best if you …

Do not talk about yourself. The only reason negative people care about what you’re up to is because they want something to ridicule, brag or gossip about to make themselves look or feel good. Don’t go there. Whether you just filed bankruptcy or won a Nobel Prize, keep it to yourself. No good can come of it. None. And why do you need to chatter like a chipmunk about yourself anyway? Might want to think on that one, too. Better to find some praise for someone else than to expect someone to praise you. 32 December 2016| azhealthandliving.com

Do not share your woes. Even if you’re in a tough place and could really use a shoulder to cry on, don’t start laying your woes on a Negative Nell. Even in a weak moment, when you’ve had a terrible day, talking about it with a negative person is a bad idea. You might get a microsecond of sympathy, but that’s only so they can launch into telling you how much worse they have it. So, no talking about yourself unless you want to be the talk of the party, the family, and the town.

Do your homework and become like Teflon. Think of the times people said things that made you feel bad or made you feel the need to defend or explain yourself. If you want to avoid going down that trail again, start hacking away at the jungle of your own emotions. Get over needing anyone's approval or blessing. If you are still waiting for negative relatives to validate you, you’re in for a long wait. Don't set yourself up to be miserable. Get over it and go prepared.

How to Overcome Excuses in 2017 By Dan Waldschmidt, author of Edgy Conversations: How Ordinary People Achieve Outrageous Success, www.EdgyConversations.com

Great people throughout history often fail, quite miserably, before finally reaching their goals. Van Gogh sold only one painting during his lifetime; Winston Churchill lost every public election until becoming prime minister at age 62; Henry Ford went bankrupt five times; Albert Einstein was a terrible student and was expelled from school; Sigmund Freud was booed from a stage. Ideas, brilliance, genius – they all mean nothing without the guts, passion and tenacity necessary to make your dream a reality. But often, people fall back on excuses and give up on trying to reach their goals. Most of us have dreams, and many of us have big ones, but few of us actually see them through. Here are six tricks for jumping off the excuse train and forge the path to your goals.

your destiny right now. Why would you doubt that? Stop whining. Go conquer.

Avoid the need to blame others for anything. Mean, small-minded people are cranky and eager to point out others’ mistakes. They hope that by causing others to feel inadequate, everyone will forget about how woefully off the mark their own performance is. Don’t blame anyone, for any reason, ever. It’s a bad habit.

Ask yourself, “What can I do better next time?” And then do it next time. If you spend a decade or two earnestly trying to be better, that’s exactly what will happen. The next best thing to doing something amazing is not doing something stupid. So learn from your mistakes and use the lessons to dominate.

Stop working on things that just don’t matter. Not everything needs to be done in place of sleep. If you work for a boss, then you owe them solid time. You can’t cut that out. You can, however, cut out television time, meetings and anything else that gets in the way of achieving your goals. Replace entertainment with activity toward your goal.

Proactively take time to do things that fuel your passion. Exercise is a great example. Living in the moment requires you to live at peak performance. A huge part of mental fitness is physical fitness. A sparring or running partner is a great way to refresh physical competition. Physical activity accelerates mental motivation.

Refuse to let yourself wallow in self-doubt. You’re alive to succeed. Stop comparing your current problems to your last 18 failures. They are not the same. You are not the same. Here’s something to remember: Your entire life has been a training ground for you to capture

Apologize to yourself and those around you for having a bad attitude. Do this once or twice and you’ll snap out of your funk pretty fast. When you start genuinely apologizing for being a bad influence on those around you, you learn to stop whining and start winning. azhealthandliving.com | December 2016

In these studies patients obtained better pain relief from acupuncture treatment than from the injection. Acupuncture thus works through the body’s built-in pain suppressing machinery. Q. How can prolotherapy and platelet rich plasma (PRP) aid in musculoskeletal healing? A. Patients always want to be told by their doctor that something is all right and leave A. Prolotherapy (short for “proliferation Q. Could the lump I have ever give me a problem?

it alone. The truth is that a lump could turn into a bigger problem.

A sebaceous cyst is a sac like structure just under the skin that contains a cheese like material called sebum. These cysts can be infected easily and without warning, which can then lead to cellulitis, a serious skin infection that can spread quickly. In a diabetic for example, this simple infection could be disastrous. A sebaceous cyst will never go away without surgical removal of the sac. A cyst can be drained, but the sac will remain and can fill up again, and become infected. Once a sebaceous cyst is removed, it will never come back. A lipoma is a benign soft tissue tumor made up of body fat. They are the most common of soft tissue tumors, and can occur on any skin surface area. As lipomas increase in size though, there have been cases in which malignant (cancerous) transformation has occurred. Approximately 1 percent of the population has a lipoma, and they can occur at any age but most often in age ranges of 40-60 years old. The possibility of a lipoma undergoing a malignant change to a liposarcoma is why most tumors should be removed. The definitive characteristics of a lump are not fully known until it is removed and examined under a microscope.

therapy”) is a non-surgical course of injections that stimulates the body’s own natural healing mechanisms to repair injured or weakened musculoskeletal tissue and joints. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) uses a patient’s own blood platelets to speed healing beyond basic dextrose-based prolotherapy. Combining prolotherapy or PRP injections with osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) helps to optimize a successful outcome for a multitude of musculoskeletal problems including osteoarthritis, repetitive stress injuries, muscle strains, tendon sprains, or ligament tears in any joint of the body or spine. The combined therapies can significantly accelerate the healing process of injured structures. Prolotherapy/PRP are beneficial for patients with injured tendons, ligaments, muscle or joints weakened by trauma or osteoarthritis, and they can help repair and strengthen hypermobile and painful tissue damage from strains or sprains. They are very effective for both acute injuries and chronic conditions. These therapies are optimal for patients who follow a sensible diet and exercise regimen. Patients should always consult a physician prior to undergoing any treatments. Patients with poor digestion, dietary or immune system issues, poor nutrition, or chronic hormonal or allergic problems should address these deficiencies prior to embarking on prolotherapy/PRP treatments. Q. What are some sleep-related conditions that I should know about? A. Our country is sleep-deprived—desperate for restful nights, to awaken easily, and be functional throughout the day without needing a nap. The anxiety and stress of our busy world certainly make it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. But those dreams of being rested are even more difficult to achieve when nights are fraught with the tossing, turning, snoring, choking, or gasping for breath of oneself or a bed partner. Millions are disturbed by either their own or their bed partner’s sleep-disordered breathing, caused by airway obstruction— throughout the night. Sleep-disordered breathing is a serious health problem and initially appears as snoring. Although snoring is generally viewed in the United States as a minor annoyance, it can be the first sign of a problem with a range of severity. Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome is marked by a greater loss of airway patency than snoring. Those who suffer from upper airway resistance syndrome are generally young, female, and may also experience gastroesophageal reflux disorder, asthma, depression and hormonal imbalances. Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a serious and often life-threatening problem when sleepers stop breathing for 10 seconds or more (apnea), or breathe at a decreased rate and depth (hypopnea). Choking, gasping for breath, and long periods without breathing are all signs of obstructive sleep apnea.

Q. What are porcelain veneers? A. Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin shells of

tooth-colored material that are designed to be placed over the surface of each tooth. Each custom-made shell is bonded to the front of the teeth, which completely changes their appearance, color, shape, size or length. Porcelain veneers are designed to resist stains better than other types of veneers and appear more natural because they better mimic the way light naturally reflects off the surface of teeth. Veneers will usually last between 8 to 10 years before they will need to be replaced. Porcelain veneers allow us the ability to transform your smile into one you can be proud of for years. Advanced technology in the field of cosmetic dentistry has allowed us the ability to give patients white, straight, and natural looking teeth without the use of braces or surgery. Am I a candidate for porcelain veneers? Veneers can be used to fix a multitude of cosmetic issues. Issues such as those below can be reversed very quickly and with no surgery or braces. • Worn enamel • Wear and tear • Genetics • Uneven teeth • Permanent stains - such as those caused by antibiotics administered in childhood • Teeth that are dissimilar in color or contour Patients of all types may qualify for porcelain veneers. However, those who smoke or who have weak teeth will not qualify. Additionally, those who have periodontal disease, decay, missing teeth, or who need major orthodontic work may require additional treatments before having veneers placed.

Q. What can be done for oily skin and large pores? A. Laser Genesis at Dermacare Cosmetic

Surgery is a non-invasive facial laser treatment that provides great results with no downtime. One of the most rewarding changes that can be made to the skin with this tried and true technology is reducing oil output and shrinking pores. The unique wavelengths and controlled depth of the laser target overactive oil glands within your skin. This laser also stimulates collagen production and plumping of the skin that you see around the pores. It won’t make your pores disappear but, as a result of less oil pooling within the pores on your skin, your skin will be firmer and you’ll see a dramatic change. As a standalone treatment, Laser Genesis can help improve your skin’s overall texture and appearance. Laser Genesis can be combined with other treatments for clearing acne, reducing redness, clearing up sun damage, and improving texture. It is also known for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and even improving the tone of your skin. Laser Genesis is good for nearly all skin types, but a complimentary consultation is required for safety. At Dermacare Cosmetic Surgery, you’ll receive a comprehensive consultation with a skin professional for any treatment or procedure. These consultations are to ensure that you are receiving the best care, achieving the optimal results and choosing the right treatments for your personal skin type.

Q. Why do we age? A. Aging starts at the cellular level. Cells are the basic biological foundation within our bodies, and are at the center of any discussion related to the aging process. Your body has trillions of cells organized into different tissues that make up organs: such as your brain, heart, and skin. When cellular health is not properly maintained, all of these areas are increasingly affected as we age. Cell damage and death is the basis for understanding the aging process, though it is not the only factor. As we age, cell strength and vitality are naturally lost over time and they begin to degenerate and disappear at an accelerating rate. This has a tremendous impact on body fitness, physical appearance, and our overall notion of well-being. There are also physical factors: such as free radicals, inflammation, excess sugar, and stress that damage our cells and therefore, many experts believe, accelerate aging. Scientific research has shown that Mineral BioSciences®, Ioniplex™, has a stimulatory effect on cell metabolism, which improves energy production and cell performance overtime. Ioniplex has also been shown to restore the age-related decrease of the most important structural and functional components of cells. Ioniplex makes life better and allows you to enjoy your health, youth, and vigor. Ioniplex is available in the liquid dietary supplement Totala Cellular Health.

Q. Why should I advertise my business? A. No matter how wonderful your service or product is, if you don't advertise, nobody will know. The goal of advertising should be to cost effectively reach the largest audience possible to attract new patients/ customers. If done correctly, advertising can be a wonderful investment; if done poorly, advertising can become financially draining.

Here are four tips to start a successful advertising plan:

Q. Why is it important to alkalize your body? A. Alkalinity, referred to as pH, is the concentration of hydrogen ions in water, blood, etc. A pH of 7.0 on the scale is considered neutral, but a 7.4 pH is desirable for the human body. You get alkaline by eating raw foods, including fruits and vegetables. The acidic foods on the other hand are sugar, white flour, red meats, and processed foods. Stress can also cause your body to be acidic. The American diet is 80% acid and 20% alkaline; this is the opposite of a good diet. If you reverse those numbers you will be giving your body what it desires.

1. Go after your target audience; in the right places! No product or service will appeal to everyone. Do research to understand who your audience is and determine what they read, watch and listen to. Find your market and be everything you can be to that audience. Your blood pH must operate in a narrow 2. Highlight your competitive advantage; what makes you unique? Find your competitive edge. Too many ads highlight all the features and services and fail to sell their specific benefits. Unless you highlight these benefits, how can you deliver value to potential patients/customers? 3. Establish your image. You have a car full of hungry kids and there are only two places to stop for lunch; you recognize the McDonald’s arches but you have never heard of the other place. Where will you stop? Image counts; don’t lose a chance to make an impression. 4. You have to spend money to make money. Advertising is not the place to cut corners. Doing so affects the bottom line. Successful advertising may cost some money, but that is because it works.

range for good health. The complex biochemical processes taking place constantly is an attempt to keep blood pH as near perfect as possible. If your body is not getting an adequate mineral intake from the foods you eat, you will have problems balancing your pH system. When the body is overly acidic it will leach calcium from the bones or teeth, leading to osteoporosis and other health problems.

An easy way to get enough minerals to keep your body alkaline is by taking the only wheatgrass powder with the roots. Wheatgrass will assimilate into your bloodstream in about 20 minutes. All wheatgrass powders are not the same, be sure and get the only one that includes the roots.

Q. I always want to help in some way during the holidays, but never know where to start – any ideas? A. With so many needs in the community, it is sometimes difficult to choose a favorite charity. It is especially important during the holiday season to find ways to give back, whether it is with a monetary donation or a gift of time. Our favorite year-round charity is our local food bank and we encourage everyone to think of the food banks during the holiday season. While they are always in need of your food donations, consider a cash gift as a way to give back this year. They can make your dollars stretch much farther and your cash donations allow them to purchase the items they need the most. The holidays are also a great time to give the gift of your time as a volunteer. Skilled care centers, assisted living facilities and senior centers are just a few places where there are folks who would enjoy a friendly visitor, and some of their activities departments use volunteers to help with planned activities. Whatever your choice for giving back, do take time to count your blessings and share with others less fortunate this holiday season. Happy holidays and Happy New Year to all of you from all of us at Sun Cities CareGivers!

Q. Does Wildlife World have any baby Q. I know about Medicare’s Open animals in the winter? Enrollment Period but why should I A. Jaguars are the largest feline found in the New World and ranks third in size behind lions and tigers. Males can grow to about 200 pounds and are known to have the strongest bite of any feline species. Their stocky build helps them climb with ease in their preferred rainforest habitat, enabling them to stalk and ambush prey.

Even subtle changes to any of the above can greatly affect the performance of your health plan. Residing in Arizona provides many health plan options to those enrolled in Medicare. The majority of Medicare beneficiaries have chosen medical coverage in addition to Our male cub is named Inti after the ancient “traditional” Medicare.

Incan sun god and his fur is orange with black spots. His sister’s name is Killa, the moon goddess. A sizable fraction of the population, like Killa, is black with black spots.

Jaguars have an extensive range throughout Central and South America and were once found throughout the desert Southwest, including Arizona. Jaguars, an endangered species, face an uncertain future because of habitat loss and fragmentation. Many are killed as a result of increasing human-animal conflicts over space and resources.

One of those options is a Medicare Advantage plan and, although they all offer very comprehensive protection, they can also vary greatly from plan to plan and year to year. If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan you receive an “Annual Notice of Change” each October explaining any and/or all changes made to your benefits for the coming year. The Open Enrollment Period allows those with Medicare the opportunity to explore and learn about all options available to them for the coming year. Learn About Product Recalls for Safe Holiday Giving Shopping for the perfect gift and then hiding it under the tree adds to the excitement of the holiday season. Knowing the recipient will display a big smile when tearing away the wrapping paper makes gift givers feel good. Each year, certain gifts emerge as trendy crowd favorites. However, no matter how coveted a gift may be, it pays to investigate its reputation for safety and to find out if any product recalls have been instituted. The hoverboard craze of the 2015 holiday season provided a recent example of the need to investigate an item's reputation for safety. Thousands upon thousands of these devices flew off the shelves. Children across the country took their hoverboards for test runs early Christmas morning. Yet many hoverboards soon ignited while charging or in operation. Some even ignited while sitting idle. As of July 2016, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission indicated at least 60 reports of hoverboard fires totaling more than $2 million in property damage. Similar problems arose with certain Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phones in late 2016. The phone was recalled officially in the United States through Samsung, and the company launched exchange programs in other countries. Even replacement models continued to have problems, as some caught on fire in early October. Samsung ultimately told Note 7 owners to stop using the phones and return them before permanently discontinuing the product. Shortly thereafter, the U.S. CPSC officially issued a second recall. Those are just two instances of how products that might have made great holiday gifts posed safety issues. Consumers should learn how they can protect themselves and others from injury, even when giving holiday gifts. Searching for product recalls is one way to safeguard loved ones this holiday season. Reading product reviews from previous customers is another effective safety measure. 44 December 2016

A recall is an action taken by a manufacturer or the government. Some recalls will ban the sale of an item, while others require the consumer to return the item for repair or replacement. The U.S. government recommends visiting these websites to find the latest safety recalls and information on items that may turn up on holiday wish lists. 路 Recalls.com posts government-initiated recalls from federal agencies. 路 Safercar.gov offers safety information on vehicles and car equipment, such as children's safety seats. 路 SaferProducts.gov enables consumers to report incidents and safety concerns with regard to consumer products. 路 Cpsc.gov/Recalls/ includes recalls published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The holidays should be a safe and happy time. To ensure the season stays safe and happy, consumers should familiarize themselves with any product recalls or published safety hazards before shopping for gifts.

Select Educational Gifts for Children By MS

While some shoppers may want to get kids the flashiest toy, others may prefer gifts that are both fun and mentally stimulating. Toy and game manufacturers continue to develop products that integrate logic, reasoning, language stimulation and motor skill development. Shoppers looking for fun, educational toys and games for the kids on their shopping lists have a host of items to choose from.

Building blocks: Blocks that enable children to design and construct are popular among youngsters of various ages.

STEM toys: STEM is an acronym for science, technology and math. Early introduction to STEM-related skills can pay dividends later in life, considering students who have an emphasis on STEM knowledge are highly coveted among employers. STEM toys may include robot-building kits, toys that help young learners test the boundaries of physics, apps that help kids learn computer programing, and even scientific experiment kits that illustrate cause and effect.

Sensory toys: Young children can benefit from toys that stimulate the senses. Items to consider include water toys, sands (including the newer kinetic varieties), play doughs, musical instruments and bubbles. Even food-related toys, such as those that encourage baking or cooking, will appeal to various senses and can help kids learn valuable skills.

Imaginative play toys: Imaginative play is an effective

way to stimulate creative thinking and may help children become better learners. The Creativity Institute, specializing in toys for creative play, says playing is important to children and the way they practice growing up. According to an article by Dr. Scott Kaufman that appeared in Psychology Today, Systematic research has increasingly demonstrated a series of clear benefits of children's engagement in pretend games from the ages of about two and one-half through ages six or seven. Dress-up toys, puppets, dolls, action figures and toys that mimic real-life activities are all examples of products that promote imaginative play. azhealthandliving.com |December 2016

When resolving to lose weight, men and women will encounter an abundance of information about dieting and weight loss. It's difficult to know who to believe and to determine which plans will be effective. Research published by Shape magazine says nearly one in three young people embark on a new diet each month, but 45 percent give up after one week, and about half abandon their goals within a month. Data released in the Daily Mail said that although one in seven (13 percent) women in the United Kingdom stick to a diet for 13 weeks or more, nearly one in five (19 percent) succumb to their favorite food cravings after a month. What's the magic formula for weight loss? Experts advise that there isn't any. Weight-loss strategies that require fad dieting or restrict certain foods may not produce long-term success. Rather, a lifestyle overhaul is often the most effective weight loss strategy.

Recognize that quick fixes do not work. Drastic weight loss approaches may produce immediate results, but such plans are not sustainable. Drastic plans include certain detoxes and cleanses; diets that eliminate all but a few foods; some prepackaged foods; and food-replacement strategies. Feelings of deprivation or boredom may make people following these diets unsuccessful in the long run. Losing weight means changing one's food and exercise plans over the long haul. Eat in regular intervals. Researchers at the National Weight Control Registry offer that spacing food evenly throughout the day is the key to successful, long-term weight loss. People who eat healthy food at regular intervals are better nourished, think more clearly and report fewer mood swings than those who eat erratically. Recognize that not all carbs are bad. People trying to lose weight often hear that they should increase protein consumption and drastically reduce their intake 46 December 2016

Weight-loss strategies that require fad dieting or restrict certain foods may not produce long-term success. Rather, a lifestyle overhaul is often the most effective weight loss strategy. of carbohydrates. While it's smart to reduce consumption of processed carbs and those that are made largely of white flour, there are some healthy carbohydrates, including beans, whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

Be flexible. As a person's body ages, his or her metabolism will change. Men and women should revisit their recommended caloric intake every few years. In addition, men and women can routinely revisit their exercise routines to determine the efficacy of those routines and alter their workouts to reflect the physical changes their bodies are going through as they age. A person's first step before dieting or attempting to lose weight should be to consult their physician, who can help men and women achieve their weight loss goals in a way that's healthy and easy to maintain for years to come.

How to Maximize Your Gym Workout & Membership By MS

Ringing in the New Year might be about toasting to good fortune and reminiscing with family and friends. But for many people, New Year’s Eve also may be spent thinking about New Year’s resolutions, many of which may focus on getting healthy and fit in the year ahead. Fitness resolutions are popular, and there are several ways to realize those resolutions and get the most out of your investment in a gym membership.

Get inside the door. The first step to realizing results is

to go to the gym. Statistics indicate that within a month or two of joining a gym, attendance numbers dwindle even though people continue to pay for memberships when they are not going to the gym. Schedule time at the gym as you would any other activity. If you need motivation to go, enlist a friend to join and get you to attend.

Do something you love. Start out with an activity you

enjoy doing, or experiment with different activities until you find one that you find enjoyable. You may be allowed to sample classes without paying for a different membership plan, or even just observe outside of the studio door to get a sense of what may interest you.

Work with a trainer. New members can rely on personal training sessions to familiarize themselves with a gym's equipment and the proper techniques to employ when using that equipment. Trainers also can play key supportive rolls in members' workouts, helping to keep clients motivated on those days when the enthusiasm is waning.

Vary your workouts. Expanding your boundaries is a

great way to push your body and maximize your workout. According to Jacob Wilson, Ph.D., certified strength and conditioning specialist and associate editor of the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, by only doing cardio your metabolism will actually go down, making weight loss more difficult. Resistance training, however, builds muscle to increase your metabolic rate." Variety is the spice of life, and it's also essential to effective workouts. azhealthandliving.com | December 2016

DECORATE & IMPROVE

By MS

Simple Ways to Dress up Your Home for the Holidays The holiday season is rife with traditions that focus on fun and family. One such testament to the festive spirit of the holiday season is the many homes and businesses decorated with the lights and colors that have become synonymous with the season. Decorating for the holiday season can be time-consuming. While decking the halls may not consume as much time as holiday shopping and wrapping presents, according to data from a 2013 American Time Use Survey, interior and exterior decorating for the holidays may consume anywhere from 2.5 to 3 hours per session. Holiday decorating includes things as simple as setting up a menorah or as complex as stringing lights on the exterior of a home. Though elaborate displays can take hours to erect, time-crunched holiday celebrants can still create festive, welcoming displays.

Hang holiday wreaths. Holiday enthusiasts without much time to decorate can invest in a couple of holiday wreaths, which can be dressed up as much or as little as celebrants prefer. If you do not have the time to string lights on the house, wrap them around wreaths hung in windows or hang the wreaths on a home's main entrance. Celebrants who want to go a less traditional route can hang wreaths made of holly, citrus fruits, ribbons, or any other greenery instead of the more customary evergreen wreaths.

Decorate with ornaments. Ornaments are not exclusive to Christmas trees. Fill a vase or bowl with metallic ornaments and place it in a prominent location, such as a busy hallway or the foyer of your home. Hang ornaments on clear filament from the mantle or within the main window of the house, where they can reflect tree lights and add sparkle.

Simplify holiday decorating with some easy tips to make houses cozy and festive. Focus on the front door and entryway. Celebrants

who do not have the time to decorate their entire homes can create a warm, inviting space by decorating their front doors and entryways. EXCEL & ACHIEVE

CAREER, BUSINESS & FINANCE By Marsha Friedman, CEO of EMSI Public Relations and author of Celebritize Yourself: The Three Step Method to Increase Your Visibility and Explode Your Business

Tempted to Buy Social Media Followers? Why less is more

If you get spam emails, you’ve probably seen subject lines like this: “Buy followers for cheap!” “Look more legit – Twitter followers $2.99 per 1,000.” Boosting your following on social media for just a few bucks can be tempting. Popularity increases perceived value, so a large audience conveys clout and credibility. It’s also an endorsement of you and your message by other individuals, businesses, and entities using platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. But paying for those followers can have the opposite effect. Cheap “followers” are often dummy accounts, overseas users (many businesses pay low-wage workers overseas to create fake accounts), and inactive accounts. And there are plenty of free online tools that can quickly tell you how much of an account’s following is fake. If you’re a celebrity or politician that can make for embarrassing headlines. If you’re a business or individual trying to market yourself or build a brand, it can make you look downright untrustworthy. On the biggest platforms, the money spent on followers will ultimately be wasted. Twitter and Facebook now routinely delete fake and inactive accounts. Those 40,000 Facebook “likes” you bought can disappear in a matter of days. And the sudden drop in numbers will alert any real followers you have that you’ve been artificially bulking up. Fake followers also defeat the purpose of social media marketing: They’re not real people who are going to spread your message and who might eventually do business with you. Their only value is in making it appear that you’re popular. Until you’re not. Don’t succumb to the come-ons for cheap followers. Even if it’s just a dollar, it’s a dollar wasted – or worse. 50 December 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

If you’ve never bought followers, it’s likely you have a few fakes and inactive accounts following you anyway. That’s not your fault; they’re out there and most people have some! It’s a good idea to periodically do some housecleaning and get rid of the accounts that aren’t doing anything for you.

For Twitter, use free online tools to see what percentage of your followers are good accounts. We use fakers.statuspeople.com to see what percentage of followers on an account is genuine, inactive or fake. If 80 percent or more of your following is good, you don’t have to worry about appearing disreputable. And keep in mind, the tools that tell you how many fakes you have are neither foolproof nor entirely accurate.

Fake and inactive followers don’t do you any good. Engaging users – having them respond to, retweet, favorite and “like” your content – is what helps create future customers. Clean house by running your account through ManageFlitter.com. This app identifies which of your followers are fake, among other details, and allows you to easily remove them.

Review those who have liked your Facebook page. Businesses, brands, artists and others using Facebook to interact for promotional purposes use pages specifically designated by Facebook for that purpose. People simply “like” your business page rather than submit a friend request as they do with personal pages. The number of likes you have indicates the number of followers you have. Again, since the value of the platform is getting people to engage by sharing and “liking” your content, it’s better to have 500 engaged potential customers than 10,000 followers in India. Review who’s following you. Go through the list – you may recognize names of regular customers or people who often “like” or comment on your content. Check the user profiles of the ones you don’t know, or who look less than genuine, to decide if they’re real people. The list gives you the option to remove anyone with the click of a button. If you haven’t purchased followers, cleaning house once in a while shouldn’t be much of a chore. Your reward will be having a higher percentage of engaged users who will actually help spread your message to other potential customers or clients.

ENJOY LIFE

Rachel McAdams An Humble Hollywood Star

When “Dr. Strange” hit theaters last month it was an instant Box Office success. One of its stars is Canadian actress Rachel McAdams, who played Dr. Strange’s love interest. This role though is hardly McAdams’ first taste of success as the Academy Award nominated actress has been impressing audiences across the globe for years. A graduate of a theatre program at York University, McAdams got her start working in the Canadian television and film industry around 2001-2002. She made her big Hollywood debut however in 2004 with roles in “Mean Girls” and “The Notebook.” Other hits such as “Red Eye,” “The Family Stone,” “The Time Traveler’s Wife,” “The Vow” and more soon followed. Her role last year in “Spotlight” was her most acclaimed to date, earning her an Academy Award nomination. So, what inspired the Canadian star to pursue acting? “Shakespeare when I was 12,” she told Hello! Magazine. “It was something I was intimidated by but I had this amazing director who made it really accessible and that was it. I was hooked.” Interestingly enough, the humble hit maker actually didn’t set out to be a movie star. “I think it was sort of a vague idea in my mind when I was a kid, when you think, ‘What would that be like?’ ” she says about being a star to the Los Angeles Times. “But it wasn’t something I really meditated on or planned for in any way. I really thought I’d be doing theater in Canada. I’d grown up doing children’s theater there, and I always imagined myself being artistic director of a children’s theater company.” In spite of her obvious success, McAdams is one of Hollywood’s more private stars. In fact, she actually still resides part-time in Toronto, Canada. 52 December 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

“McAdams has dated both Ryan Gosling and Michael Sheen, yet the public still knows very little about her private life. She has certainly been resolute in her refusal to move to Los Angeles; refreshingly, it seems her career isn’t the be-all and end-all,” according to an article in the Courier Mail. “I like staying in Toronto,” she told the Courier Mail. “It’s nice and quiet and it gives me a break from the business. It’s home.” Now, several years into her career, McAdams is well known for her work ethic and the fact that she is often selective with the roles she portrays. “It’s often out of my own insecurity,” McAdams admitted to the Los Angeles Times. “If I’m picky, it’s for that reason. I want to be able to bring my best to the table. So if I’m not connecting to something, then I’m not gonna hold up my end of the bargain, and that’s really embarrassing.” When selecting a role, many things come into play, she told Hello! Canada. “Oh, it sort of seems to change with every project, but I just always look for something that’s going to challenge me, some uncharted territory. A director who’s passionate, good storytelling — those are usually at the top of the list and then I go from there.” When she’s not on set, McAdams is known for giving back to a variety of causes, including: supporting environmental and immigration issues, and charities such as the READ Campaign, United Way, Alzheimer’s Association, and more. Currently, many media outlets are reporting that McAdams will star in a film called “Disobedience” next year and is rumored to have a survival drama film in the works as well. Still, don’t expect McAdams to become more open or even join social media anytime soon. According to The Globe and Mail: “Keeping her core private ‘makes me a better actor, I feel,”’ McAdams admits. “I need to have a normal life, so I can bring that back to my job.” “I gain incredible insight and compassion from doing my job – about people, about the world,” she says to The Globe and Mail. “I love that I get to have so many lives in one. Life is so short, but being an actor allows me to cram a lot into a brief period of time. I can never see myself getting bored with it.” azhealthandliving.com |December 2016

Warning Signs Your Parents Need Help at Home The holidays and their aftermath are the busiest time of year for long-term care admissions. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, families get together and many are seeing Mom and/or Dad for the first time in months. Some will discover that their parent’s health has declined and he or she should not be left to live on their own any longer. Warning signs that your parent may need to be evaluated for in-home nursing assistance, or a move to a more supportive setting, include: • Confusion or forgetfulness about taking medications • Unstable/unbalanced (at risk of falling) • Change in hygiene habits or personality Most families are not prepared for this; they don’t have a plan or resources, so the situation becomes traumatic and heart breaking for everyone. It doesn’t have to be that way. Every family should be talking about this now and exploring options.

Three tips to help families’ better plan: Remember, there are many levels of care available. From a few hours of in-home assistance each week to residential communities that provide daily assistance with meals, laundry, etc., to a nursing home that provides round-the-clock care, there are many options to consider. Finding ways to keep your loved one at home for as long as possible is the least disruptive – and least expensive – option. Avoid resorting to Medicaid if possible. Nursing-home care costs start at $5,000 to $8,000 a month, which is often beyond the means of people otherwise considered financially healthy. Many families turn to Medicaid to pay for nursing home care, but it comes with many restrictions, 60 December 2016

Every family should be talking about this now and exploring options. including choice of facilities. In a situation where one spouse is healthy and the other is not, the spouse living independently will also face restrictions on the amount of assets he or she can retain. Don’t simply stop paying on a life insurance policy to save money. Any life insurance policy can be converted into a protected Long-Term Care Benefit fund, which will pay for any level of care, from in-home to hospice. Policyholders typically receive 30 to 60 percent of the death benefit value when they convert the policy specifically to pay for long-term care. The benefit qualifies as a Medicaid spend-down, which means they’ll still be eligible for that program if the money runs out.

Preparing a Power of Attorney to Protect Loved Ones Life is full of the unexpected. But just because the future is unpredictable does not mean adults cannot prepare for what lies ahead. Estate planning is important, and establishing power of attorney can be essential for men and women looking to protect their financial resources and other assets.

What is power of attorney? A power of attorney, or POA, is a document that enables an individual to appoint a person or organization to manage his or her affairs should this individual become unable to do so. According to the National Caregivers Library, POA is granted to an "attorney-in-fact" or "agent" to give a person the legal authority to make decisions for an incapacitated "principal." The laws for creating a power of attorney vary depending on where a person lives, but there are some general similarities regardless of geography.

Why is power of attorney needed?

Power of attorney is a key document to have in an estate plan.

Many people believe their families will be able to step in if an event occurs that leaves them incapacitated and unable to make decisions for themselves. Unfortunately, this is not always true. If a person is not named as an agent or granted legal access to financial, medical and other pertinent information, family members' hands may be tied. In addition, the government may appoint someone to make certain decisions for an individual if no POA is named.

subtle legal differences. Durable power of attorney, for example, relates to all the appointments involved in general, special and health care powers of attorney being made "durable." This means the document will remain in effect or take effect if a person becomes mentally incompetent. Certain powers of attorney may fall within a certain time period.

Just about everyone can benefit from establishing an attorney-in-fact. Doing so does not mean men and women cannot live independently, but it will remove the legal barriers involved should a person no longer be physically or mentally capable of managing certain tasks.

An agent appointed through POA may be able to handle the following, or more, depending on the verbiage of the document:

Power of attorney varies Power of attorney is a broad term that covers various aspects of decision-making. According to the legal resource 'Lectric Law Library, the main types of POA include general power of attorney, health care power of attorney, durable power of attorney, and special power of attorney. Why Adult Coloring Should Be Your New Hobby By MS

Change Your Thoughts. Change Your Words. Change Your World. Coloring books are no longer just child's play. In recent years, adult coloring books have flown off the shelves at craft retailers and bookstores, turning what were once a niche hobby into a popular and lucrative trend.

Sponsored by

Studies show that coloring can have calming and therapeutic effects. In fact, researchers at Johns Hopkins University suggest coloring as an alternative to meditation. This form of art therapy can relax the mind and help a person learn more about oneself in the process. All types of coloring can stimulate a person's creative juices while simultaneously strengthening his or her mental wellbeing. Experts who study the impact coloring has on adults have found coloring involves both logic and creativity. This activates the areas of the cerebral cortex in the brain involved in vision and fine motor skills. The relaxation that coloring provides lowers the activity of the amygdala, the part of the brain that controls emotions. Participants who color can find tranquility quite easily. According to Marygrace Berberian, a certified art therapist and clinical assistant professor and Program Coordinator for the Graduate Art Therapy Program at New York University, Coloring definitely has therapeutic potential to reduce anxiety, create focus or bring about more mindfulness. Adults interested in coloring have a substantial catalog of adult coloring books at their disposal. Start with something relatively easily by coloring mandalas, or circles filled with other geometric shapes. Intricate designs are hallmarks of adult coloring books, including fine art and design-themed coloring books. Therefore, it's best to invest in a quality set of colored pencils for a greater level of precision. azhealthandliving.com | December 2016

There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, red lights called enemies, caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith and a driver named Jesus—you will make it to a place called success.” – Author Unknown

For with God nothing will be impossible. Luke 1:37
