any of us live in the Valley of the Sun for exactly that, the sun and for the number of days we can be outdoors and enjoy it. But it’s important to remember the havoc this exposure can wreak on our skin. While avoiding skin cancer is the primary reason for discussing SPF protection, the sun is equally destructive to collagen and premature photo-aging. Some think only to apply sun screens when heading to the beach or spending long hours of fun in the sun. But daily application of SPF is required to protect your skin from cancer and photo-aging every day. UVA rays for instance are responsible for photo-aging, penetrating deeper into the skin than its counterpart, and UVA penetrates through glass. That’s right your commute to and from work is actually very harmful to your skin. UVB is more responsible for the carcinogenic effects on the skin and causing sun burn. Regular application of sunscreen to all exposed body parts will offer you 93%-97% more protection daily. SPF clothing is also available to cover exposed areas during drive time or during longer exposure times.

Common complaints about wearing sun screen are that they can feel greasy, oily, or may irritate skin or eyes. This prevents many people from complying with daily use or repeat application. These symptoms are usually due to the multi-vowel chemical
agents used in manufacturing. Chemical sun screen agents such as Aminobenzoic Acid or Benzophenones are chemical absorbers of UVA/UVB and offer only partial protection. Other ingredients offer a physical block from the UV rays. These are seen on active ingredient labels as Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide. They are responsible for the white or opaque coverage many are familiar with and don’t like. However, new technology has micronized the particles to be more cosmetically acceptable. Most medical grade skin care lines offer many sunscreens that contain one or both of these ingredients. And with many application options such as creams, gels, powders, sprays, and pads. When it comes to which SPF number to purchase it seems one must have a science degree. The FDA will not allow any sun screen manufacturer to label SPF higher than 50 SPF. This is because the curve of protection drops off after 30 SPF and anything higher is just confusion to the consumer. They must also label whether the product is protective against, sunburn, cancer, photo-aging or all three. So this spring while enjoying the outdoors remember to chose an SPF of at least 30, apply often (every 80 minutes), and apply an adequate amount (a shot glass full). Way Out West Coalition Creating a safer, unified drug-free valley
onfucius once said, “The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” President Abraham Lincoln put it another way. “I am a slow walker, but I never walk back,” and then there is Nelson Mandela’s thoughts about keeping on task, on continuing to work hard to solve a problem. “It always seems impossible until it's done,” Mandela wrote. These brilliant men, all at different times in history, illustrated in their own words how important it is to maintain a vigilance to correct an issue. One such organization in the West Valley is working to do the same. The Way Out West Coalition (WoW) is a grass roots, community-based coalition presenting a parent-targeted message with a special focus on reducing substance use such as underage drinking, marijuana and prescription drugs, targeted at Buckeye youth grades 8-12.
“Approximately 82 percent of youth in Buckeye report having had a drink by the time they graduate high school and that doesn’t include other substance use,” Leslie Bloom, CEO of DrugFreeAz.org says. “The need for substance prevention on all levels is needed and WoW has extraordinary support from the community.” The WoW Coalition was started in 2007, after the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, Arizona Affiliate (now DrugFreeAZ.org) was invited to provide prevention services and begin to lay a foundation for a new coalition. A year later, the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, Arizona Affiliate (PDFA) and Youth Evaluation and Treatment Centers (YETC), providers of prevention services applied for and received grant monies to form the “WoW.” The coalition is made up of community members and leaders that are committed to change.
“The first coalition meeting was held in January of 2009 and WoW immediately began to work toward implementation of environmental prevention strategies to reduce underage drinking in the in the town of Buckeye,” Ed Eddingfield, WoW project manager says. “Today, the organization partners with businesses each month to get the message out about substance prevention through various initiatives.” Some of those initiatives include:
Sticker Shock Campaign. The Peer Leadership Program partners with community youth to go door-to-door to retailers asking them to place the stickers, which read “Those who host lose the most: Prevent, don’t provide, alcohol to anyone under 21,” in their place of business to encourage parents and adults not to provide alcohol to minors and display posters and table tents to create awareness.
Safety Events. WoW partners with safety organizations in Buckeye to raise awareness not only to youth, but also to parents and adults in the community about the dangers of substance use. WoW receives support from other sectors, as well. “WoW’s strength comes from the diversity of its members from all sectors of our community, from business, health care, law enforcement, and education to parents and community members and leaders,” Eddingfield says. 14

A Pair of Endangered Jaguar Cubs is on Display at Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium's Baby Animal Nursery Jaguars are the largest variety of feline found in the New World and third in size behind lions and tigers. Males can grow to about 200 pounds and are known to have the strongest bite of any feline species. Their stocky build enables them to climb with ease in their preferred rainforest habitat enabling them to stalk and ambush prey animals. Housing Angels Save your home from foreclosure
here are thousands of homes in the Valley with a set foreclosure date, according to recent statistics. One company that is making a difference in today’s real estate landscape is
the Housing Angels program. The Housing Angels program is groups of “angel” investors that help homeowners avoid foreclosure by purchasing the home via a short sale. Then, homeowners can lease their home from the investors with the option of purchasing their home again. Oftentimes the new rental price is less than the previous mortgage. If program participants are not allowed to stay in their home, they will be placed in a comparable home. Several homeowners have gone through the program and successfully bought back their homes. One Valley couple that has benefited from this program is Lisa Londene and Keith Turley. According to Housing Angels, after going through the program, they saved more than $1,000 a month in mortgage payments and more than $288,000 overall. “Our gratitude cannot be expressed enough to the awesome team at Housing Angels,” Londene says. “They were truly Godsend to us; thank you just doesn't seem to be big enough.” Real estate expert, David Dziedzic, founded Housing Angels in 2010. It was inspired by his personal experience. “Being underwater and facing foreclosure is a terrible experience; I know, I've been there,” Dziedzic says. “That is why I started Housing Angels. We have helped over 1,500 homeowners in the Valley avoid foreclosure and stay in their homes. It has been a lot of work, but well worth it.” 16

Mickey Ollson is conserving nature for future generations
ickey Ollson is on a mission to preserve wildlife and wild places. “It’s very important to the human race and the quality of life for future generations,” Ollson says, who does his part daily as the founder and director of Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park.
During the mid-1960s, Ollson began raising exotic birds on a 5-acre plot of land in the West Valley near the present zoo site. In the early 70s, he decided to trade some of his birds for mammals. When Ollson was given the opportunity to obtain some camels and zebras, he decided to purchase the 50-acre site (the present zoo site) and breed animals for zoos that needed his expertise. Before Ollson founded Wildlife World more than 30 years ago he was an educator—and the goal of educating the next generation about wildlife and the natural world is close to his heart. Although the zoo, aquarium and now safari park has grown—there are more than 600 species, many of them endangered, on 80 developed acres—the fact that the popular attraction helps to educate Arizona kids is one of his highest points of pride. “We must continue to preach the conservation ethic,” he explains. “The fact that 80,000 school children from across the state come to Wildlife World every year to learn more about wildlife and wild places stands out. Seeing the animals and their habitats up close is different than reading about them in a textbook or seeing them on a screen. I started out as an educator and now we’re helping to educate students from across the state.” In addition to the education element, with Ollson at the helm, Wildlife World has given back immensely to several community and environmental causes. “Over the past two decades, Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium has contributed tens of thousands of dollars as well as thousands more as in-kind support and staff expertise to dozens of local, national and international organizations working on problems ranging from providing 20

assistance to at-risk families here in Arizona to habitat restoration and wildlife conservation all over the globe,” according to Wildlife World. What is the secret to Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium and now recently opened 15-acre Safari Park’s success? Not one to take credit himself, Ollson says that the zoo’s success is thanks to the community that has supported it, including long-time staff and nearly 400,000 visitors a year from across the globe. He notes that, in addition to education, the zoo also helps to propagate many species that are near extinction. “We’re also proud to serve as a recreational
attraction in the West Valley,” Ollson says. “When we first started planning the zoo more than 30 years ago there wasn’t a lot out here [in the West Valley]. We are proud to have filled that void.” Change is another secret to Wildlife World’s success. If you have not visited in the last year or two, you know that if do they will have some new animals or new exhibit building. “We’ve got that reputation among our visitors that there’s always something new,” Ollson says.

“Dedicated to serving, as one human being to another” For Dr. Andrew Buresh, medicine has always been in his blood – but it took one night to truly seal it in his heart and soul. After growing up in Nebraska, Dr. Buresh, tired of blizzards, attended the University of Arizona for his undergraduate degree, where he graduated with honors, magna cum laude, receiving a double B.S. in Biochemistry and Latin. During college, he was named Outstanding Graduating Senior in the College of Humanities and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Following graduation, Dr. Buresh attended the University Of Nebraska College Of Medicine on scholarship, graduating with distinction and completed his residency at the University of Arizona and fellowship at the Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson. During his final year of his fellowship, Dr. Buresh served as Chief Fellow, participating in research in the field of myelodysplasia. He has written several articles on the subject, co-authored two book chapters, and has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Life was moving along nicely for Dr. Buresh during his Fellowship. Then, in 2002, his turning point, where he went from wanting to be a good doctor to wanting to affect change, occurred. “My wife and I were expecting our second child. While waiting for the new arrival, I was working away during fellowship and moonlighting as a hospitalist and ER physician. However, in her 21st week, my wife lost the baby,” Dr. Buresh says. “As I sat watching my wife in that hospital bed in the middle of the night, our doctor came in and took the time to not just explain the loss, but to feel it with us and generally be there for us in our greatest time of need.” At that moment, Dr. Buresh knew the rest of his life was meant to be dedicated to serving people – and patients – not just as a medical expert, but also as one human being to another. “Until then, I was seeing patients but may not have really seen them. From that day on, my eyes were open – open to the need to treat patients and their families the way I would want to be treated myself or my family to be treated,” Dr. Buresh says. He worked diligently until 2009, when he was able to make 22

In 2010, Dr. Buresh opened Desert Springs Cancer Care Center, both the first medical oncology practice located north of Loop 101 in Scottsdale and first green-built cancer facility in Arizona. Since it’s opening, Dr. Buresh has not only been able to assist patients in North Scottsdale, but also opened the doors for them to take part in critical medical trials, including one in process focused on Prostate Cancer patients. Active in the medical community, Dr. Buresh is a member of both the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology. Locally, he is a member of the Maricopa Medical Society as well. He has also been a staunch supporter of the American Cancer Society, dedicating the opening of his practice to the organization. As the practice celebrates its fourth anniversary this year, it also celebrates a new partnership as well. Desert Springs Cancer Care entered into a professional relationship with Arizona Center for Cancer Care in late 2013 in order to help Dr. Buresh hire additional specialists, invest in new treatment technologies, and share best practices with more than two dozen fellow experts across the Valley. Through the partnership, Dr. Buresh is able to call on any of his colleagues from more than 30 offices across the Valley at any time to collaborate on the best method of care. escribed as a big step forward for research and treatment of Parkinson’s disease, new research from Banner Sun Health Research Institute suggests that testing a portion of a person's saliva gland may be a way to diagnose the disease. When neurologists diagnose Parkinson's disease (PD) or other neurological diseases during life, there is always some inaccuracy and the actual diagnosis is never known for sure unless the patient has passed on, has an autopsy and the brain is examined by a neuropathologist. The accuracy of the clinical diagnosis improves over time, as the neurologist is able to observe the signs and symptoms as they change from year to year, as well as the response to the usual therapy with dopaminergic drugs. When a patient is followed for more than five years the accuracy of the clinical diagnosis is about 75-85 percent, but for patients with newly diagnosed PD, the accuracy is only about 65 percent. This is critical for clinical trials of early-stage disease, as candidate therapeutic agents may not work in that fraction of patients who do not actually have PD but have another cause of their parkinsonism, such as progressive supranuclear palsy. A salivary gland needle biopsy may aid in this dilemma, as the gland tissue often shows accumulation of an abnormally phosphorylated form of the protein alphasynuclein, which is the same microscopic abnormality seen in the brain. This is the first study demonstrating the value of testing a portion of the saliva gland to diagnose a living person with Parkinson’s disease. Making a diagnosis in living patients is a big step forward in our effort to understand and better treat patients. 26
“This procedure will provide a much more accurate diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease than what is now available,” Dr. Beach director of neuropathology at Banner Sun Health Research Institute says. “One of the greatest potential impacts of this finding is on clinical trials, as at the present time some patients entered into Parkinson’s clinical trials do not necessarily have Parkinson’s disease and this is a big impediment to testing new therapies.” “This study provides the first direct evidence for the use of submandibular gland biopsies as a diagnostic test for living patients with Parkinson’s disease,” study co-author Dr. Adler of the Mayo Clinic Arizona says. “This finding may be of great use when needing definitive proof of Parkinson’s disease, especially when considering performing invasive procedures such as deep brain stimulation surgery or gene therapy.” Parkinson's disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects movement. It develops gradually, sometimes starting with a barely noticeable tremor in just one hand. However, while tremor may be the most wellknown sign of Parkinson's disease, the disorder also commonly causes stiffness or slowing of movement. No tests exist to diagnose Parkinson's disease. “Currently diagnosis is made based on medical history, a review of signs and symptoms, a neurological and physical examination, and by ruling out other conditions. Yet up to 30 percent of patients may be misdiagnosed early in the disease,” Dr. Holly Shill director of Parkinson’s Research at Banner Sun Health Research Institute says. Although Parkinson's disease cannot be cured, medications may markedly improve symptoms. This study was funded by the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.

While what you eat plays a role in whether or not you have bad breath, other factors influence how your breath smells as well.

Certain lifestyle habits strongly influence an individual's breath. People who do not brush or floss daily, for instance, are far more likely to have bad breath. That is because food particles remain in the teeth after eating, promoting the growth of bacteria between teeth, on the tongue and around the gums. That bacterial growth results in bad breath. Another factor that contributes to bad breath is smoking or chewing tobacco. Tobacco-based products are very detrimental to a person's oral hygiene, causing bad breath, but potentially contributing to gum irritation, stained teeth and a reduced ability to taste foods as well.
Individual health Bad breath is not always a reflection of a person's diet or lifestyle choices. Sometimes bad breath might be indicative of a larger issue such as gum disease. As plaque builds up on the teeth, the resulting bacteria cause toxins to form in the mouth. Those toxins irritate the gums. While gum irritation is often painful enough, allowing it to go untreated
Stop smoking. Smokers or people who chew tobacco can greatly reduce their risk for bad breath by quitting. While that is easier said than done, it is as close to a guarantee to reducing bad breath as smokers will find.
Stay hydrated. Dry mouth often results in bad breath, so staying hydrated by drinking lots of water can reduce bad breath. Also, chewing sugarless gum can stimulate the production of saliva, helping to keep the mouth moist in the process. Visit the dentist. Many people fear the dentist's chair, but visiting the dentist at least twice a year can greatly reduce the risk of bad breath. A dentist can give a thorough cleaning and will be able to monitor and detect the common problems that contribute to bad breath, such as gum disease or dry mouth.

How to Prevent Job Stress from Ruining Your Life
study conducted by the Hay Group found that half of employees believe their current workload is unsustainable. As a result, 33 percent of people start thinking about work the moment they wake up and 75 percent think about it until they go to sleep at night. For many the concept of a real life outside of work is like a unicorn—it might exist, but you have not seen it.
Whether you are spending too much time at the office or taking your stress out on your family, allowing your job take over your life is a slippery slope of misery. Research shows that workers who experience such conflict are less healthy, less happy, and more likely to engage in passive coping behaviors like overeating, drinking or drugs. Here are three tips to end the madness.
Stop wasting time at work. More hours at work do
not always make us more productive. Think about a typical day in the office. You arrive, fire up your computer, and answer email. Then maybe you wander down the hall to the coffee machine and leisurely pour a cup of coffee. You run into your friends and discuss last night’s football game. You wander back to your office, start a task and then you are interrupted by a member of your team—and on it goes. By the time you leave at 7 p.m, you might have had only five to six productive hours. Do you ever wonder if there is a better way? To be done in less time, use the One Less Thing Principle. For every work activity, ask yourself, ‘Can this activity be focused so less time is spent completing it or delegated to another person–be stopped?’ 28

Harness the power of power breaks. Being tethered to your email 24/7 is not a good idea. One study examined the effect of uninterrupted work on our ability to focus. The researchers asked two groups of students to complete a 40-minute task that required concentration. One group simply completed the task. The other group was asked to stop the task and memorize a set of numbers at three points while they completed it. The results were striking. Even though the second group spent less time on the task, they performed better. Viewing the numbers served as a “power break”: something that let them briefly turn their attention from the task to something else. Similarly, power breaks from work help us perform better. Certainly, it is not easy to take a three-week vacation and lock your phone in the hotel safe. However, at a minimum, carve out evenings and weekends to escape your “technology tether.” Perhaps you cannot unplug every evening—then aim for three evenings per week. If you have to work on a Saturday, do not work Sunday. Find what works for you.
Get moving. There is a great deal of evidence that exercise reduces stress—in particular, high-intensity workouts have proven effective in reducing anxiety. Recent research suggests that exercise actually decreases work-family conflict. In a study of 476 workers, Russell Clayton and his colleagues found that people who exercised regularly had less conflict between work and home.

Child abusers can look like upstanding members of society. They can be your very nice neighbor, a trusted professional, or the person at the grocery store. Here are suggestions for recognizing and reporting suspected child abuse.
Do not be afraid to be wrong. You do not need to have hard evidence or proof of child abuse or neglect to report your concerns. If you are wrong, social workers and investigators will soon discover that and close the case. It might be uncomfortable for the alleged abuser and he or she may get angry. However, you can report anonymously, and it is far better to risk someone taking offense or social workers finding no evidence of abuse than for a child to suffer because no one speaks up.
Actions often speak volumes. Does a young child
cringe, raise an arm defensively or try to hide when her mother turns to her? These behaviors can be the reflexive response of a child who is frequently hit. Do you know a child who has become withdrawn, had a persistent loss of appetite, or started doing poorly in school? Changes in behavior may signal a variety of emotional problems, including abuse and neglect. What about witnessing an adult lose their patience with a child at a store or other public place in a manner that seems over-the-top? If it appears to be an emergency, call 911. Otherwise, try to defuse the situation. You might smile at the parent and say something like, â€˜It can be so hard to bring kids shopping. I remember it well.â€™ Scolding or criticizing will only make the situation worse, but attention and understanding words may calm the person.â€?

While counselors cannot file a report for you, they can answer your questions, provide information about resources, and discuss the situation that has drawn your concern. Making Behavioral Changes That Last
e all have certain behaviors and habits we want to change—and we really can change behavior, problem is, most people try to do it through sheer willpower alone, and that will not work. Without a more comprehensive strategy in place, you are just setting yourself up for failure. If you are serious about changing unhealthy aspects of your life, whether you are looking to overcome an addiction, lose weight or break destructive relationship patterns, you must first understand that real change takes a lot more than willpower or wishful thinking.
There are five tried-and-true keys to behavior change, steps that can help you get on track—and stay there. It is entirely possible to create a better you. You simply have to be willing to commit to these five steps. Lifestyle change is not a one-step fix—it is a constant process. If you are ready to do what it takes to make your change last, then read on to learn the five basic keys to behavior change.
Stoke your motivation. Most of us are in the habit of beating ourselves up if we lack motivation. Somehow, we think we have failed if we just cannot muster the energy to go to the gym or to pay the stack of bills that is accumulated—But guess what: That is normal. Motivation is not static; it ebbs and flows just like the tide. Have you ever noticed how you are super-motivated at the outset of a personal change effort, but a week later you have run out of steam? The key is to develop ways of keeping motivation at the forefront of your mind enough of the time to make a difference. Motivation is about emotion and passion—in other words, why you want to do something. They set goals—‘I want to lose a few pounds’—but have nothing in place to drive that behavior. Why do you want to lose a few pounds? It is the why that is going to influence your actions. You might say, ‘I do not want to have a stroke when I am 60 like my 30 April 2014 | azhealthandliving.com
dad did,’ or, ‘I want to live long enough to see my grandchildren graduate from college.’ Coming up with a mantra that captures your why and visualizing both what you don’t want (you eating junk food and having a heart attack) and what you do want (you exercising and enjoying an outing with your family). Yes, it is OK to be negative! In most instances, it is a fear of loss and negative consequences that kick-starts motivation the hardest.
Find a way to self-monitor. A great deal of human behavior is done on autopilot—so if you want something to change, you will have to pay attention to your own behavior and experience. Otherwise, by the time you realize you are going in the wrong direction it will be too late. Yes, the concept is simple (in theory, anyway): Vigilance is associated with success. The more you are aware of what you are doing, the more you can control it.
Most people write down their behavior patterns, but you might just as effectively talk into a recorder. Not only does keeping a record help you pay attention to what you’re doing, it allows for subsequent analysis that will help you understand what prompts your behavior, and any patterns it might fall into. Since many people tend to self-monitor with diligence in the beginning but gradually become more and more lax, record every instance of a successful or unsuccessful behavior in the first week. Thereafter, pick one day a week for self-monitoring.
Hone your self-control skills. While willpower goes
only so far without good habits to bolster it, it is still an important part of the lifestyle change equation. Selfcontrol is a critical skill when changing a behavior and the good news is that it can be developed. In fact, the improvement of self-control is a particular skill. There are two broad approaches to managing temptation. The first is avoidance, but let us face it—that is not alway possible. A better strategy is to confront your temptation and develop
a controlled way to deal with it. As mentioned before, visualization is a valuable tool because it allows you to ‘practice’ your self-control without being exposed to reallife dangers and pitfalls. Essentially, on a daily basis you need to imagine yourself successfully resisting difficult situations. The ultimate self-control is being able to throw away or discard the things that are enabling your unhealthy behavior, such as a favorite junk food, alcohol, cigarettes and so on. When you feel that you are ready, you might even want to seek out a situation in which you will be tempted and “stare down the beast,” so to speak. For example, you might go shopping with friends and challenge yourself to spend only $50. If temptation occurs when you are not seeking it out, remember that there is no shame in resisting by any legal method you can. Walk away. Leave the building. Go to the restroom. Make an important phone call!
Identify and manage “backsliding” red flags. You
may have noticed, your moods, outlooks and attitudes tend to change almost constantly—and they play an important part in the decisions we make and the way we behave. Many people are more prone to make unhealthy decisions, give in to temptation, or otherwise “backslide” when they are tired, stressed or angry, to name a few common weak spots. The fact is, others have a huge influence over our behavior, and since no one lives in a vacuum, you will have to factor in other people when going after your resolution-keeping goals. It is important to realize that no matter what your preconceived opinions or decisions might be, your behavior will change to reflect that of the people you spend time around. Q. Over the past 10 to 20 years, my eyelids have become baggier. Can this be easily treated? A. It is very common that gravity, over many decades, shows its effects in increased drooping and bagginess of eyelids, both upper and lower. Can a puff of air in your ear stop migraine headaches?
A. Sounds crazy, I know, however, a clinical trial conducted by my colleague Dr. David Sullivan of Mechanicsburg suggests pressurizing the ear canal with air can eliminate the pain from migraine.
I had the opportunity to study the technique known as the Sullivan Insufflation Method in his office. The results of his procedure were quite remarkable. His research is ongoing, but the positive outcomes so far with headache patients are dramatic. The technique involves gently blowing air against the eardrum (insufflation) using a device called a pneumatic otoscope. Ear, nose and throat doctors commonly perform this technique as a diagnostic procedure for ear conditions. Dr. Sullivan found that ear insufflation, when performed during a migraine can reduce or completely abort the attack. I personally witnessed the effectiveness of the technique on patients with headache and with trigeminal neuralgia as well. The exact mechanism by which ear insufflation reduces pain is still under study, but the method appears to modulate a large nerve center in the head known as the Trigeminal Ganglion. It has been known for years that patients suffering with migraine headache have abnormal function in this nerve center. With Dr. Sullivan’s insufflation treatment, it may be possible to modulate abnormal activity in the Trigeminal Ganglion in migraine and other types of head-pain patients by simply switching off the pain with a puff of air. The technique is safe, simple and virtually painless; I had it done on myself. Eye strain. Eye strain results from the eyes overworking the focusing muscle. Headaches from eyestrain usually cause a brow ache to aching behind the eye. Other associated symptoms are fluctuating vision and an inability to focus at close range. Migraine. Migraine headaches are vascular in nature but can be centered around the eyes. They are often preceded by an aura of shimmering lights in the peripheral vision. A particular type of migraine called an ophthalmic migraine will cause the aura of light with noassociated headaches. With a classic migraine there is often extreme sensitivity to light. Other causes of headache can be related pathologic conditions of the eyes like glaucoma. In glaucoma the pressure in the eye rises to a level that can cause a headache and damage to the optic nerve. Headaches are frequent in a particular type of glaucoma called narrowed angle glaucoma. If you think your eyes may be the cause of your headaches an evaluation by your eye doctor may help you in managing your headaches or rule out the eyes as a cause.

(TMD) related to sleep-disordered breathing?
Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) can be very painful and is often accompanied by headaches, toothaches and more bizarre symptoms. sleep-disordered breathing symptoms can both overlap and mimic those of sleep-disordered breathing. Many dentists consider temporomandibular joint problems to be somewhat of a gray area because the conditions associated with its complex task of permitting the movement of the jaw without friction is sometimes difficult to define and even more complicated to treat. Some dentists believe that sleep-disordered breathing is partly the existence of a temporomandibular joint problem and partly the manifestation of a sleepdisordered breathing problem. The simplest way to understand the connection: the bruxism (teeth grinding) or jaw shifting associated with sleep-disordered breathing (occurring when sleeping patients are unconsciously trying to find the best possible positioning of their airway) may inflame the temporomandibular joint or exacerbate a problem with the joint that was pre-existing. Headaches, a clicking jaw, malocclusion (misalignment of teeth) and condyle and disc displacement are all associated with sleep-disordered breathing . However, these symptoms often occur in patients with sleep-disordered breathing as well. Q. How can tinnitus be treated? A. Tinnitus is a condition that is described
as whistling and hissing in the ear and is often accompanied by hearing loss. According to the American Tinnitus Association, about 40 to 50 million Americans experience some degree of tinnitus in their life. A common cause of tinnitus is a long history of loud noise exposure. However, tinnitus can be a secondary result from some ear disorders, neck/head injury, side effect of medication, cardiovascular disorders, and certain rare and serious conditions such as a tumor. Acupuncture usually provides relief of tinnitus symptoms. Some tinnitus cases showed results of decreased level of ear ringing and patients responded well to treatment. As the case of tinnitus varies from person to person, it is important to give a proper evaluation of the causes of the tinnitus before acupuncture treatment. Evaluation by collecting patient history, proper neurological test, combined with traditional pulse palpation and tongue evaluation are necessary to locate the “root cause” of the tinnitus. According to principle of Traditional Chinese Medicine, tinnitus occurs due to liver Yin deficiency, weakness of kidney Qi and triple burner (a term to describe the energy pathway pass through the level of the body) In other words, the energetic level of kidney and liver is a significant factor. Certain foods, alcohol, chemicals, climate changes, emotion, activity and stress may easily trigger the symptoms. f your child stays dry during the day but wets at night, the situation is likely to be confusing and frustrating for everyone involved. You may wonder if you are doing something wrong. It turns out that conventional wisdom is not always so wise when it comes to bedwetting. Here are few myths and tips on your journey to dry nights.
You have to wait for your child to outgrow bedwetting. There are safe, effective techniques to help your child stop wetting the bed, so there is no need to wait what might be years for the problem to go away on its own. Most bedwetting children have mental or physical problems. Only three in a hundred children who urinate while sleeping have a physical or urologic cause for it. Likewise, psychological problems rarely cause bedwetting.
If a child is a sound sleeper, a bedwetting alarm will not work for her. It is true that bedwetting children are less likely to be woken by external stimuli than their parents are and that is OK! Initially, the alarm is meant to prompt Mom or Dad to accompany their child to the bathroom.
Unlike conventional alarm clocks, bedwetting alarms do not ring at a pre-set time. A moisture sensor triggers the alarm, which wakes you and your child. At this point, you can make sure that your child gets up and goes to the bathroom. After a few weeks of associating the alarm with the need to urinate, your child’s brain will begin to understand the feeling of a full bladder, and will wake up.

Bedwetting is nothing but a pesky problem that will eventually go away. You might not have thought about it, but bedwetting can impact your family financially and emotionally. For example, one or two extra loads of laundry can cost up to $700 a year! Furthermore, bedwetting can negatively affect your child’s self-esteem. Do not brush bedwetting off—it is worth the effort to overcome it now.
My child is alone in having this problem. In a class
of 25 8-year-olds, for example, at least one or two children besides your child are likely to wet the bed.
Bedwetting occurred because I left my child in disposable pants too long. Most children are day toilet trained between ages two and four, but daytime bladder control has no bearing on nighttime wetting. Using disposable pants at night can actually decrease parent frustration until a treatment program is in place.
Parents should restrict privileges or punish their children. It is crucial to realize that children do not wet their beds voluntarily. Bedwetting can be caused by a multitude of factors, including genetics, small functional bladder capacity, food sensitivities, high nighttime urine production, and even constipation—but a wet spot in the morning is not a result of your child being too lazy to get out of bed. Children very rarely wet their beds on purpose. In fact, most feel frustrated, embarrassed, and upset when they wake up to wet sheets. Punishing your child for not having a dry night will only compound these feelings and hurt his self-esteem.

Puberty will end bedwetting. While it is true that the
number of children who wet their beds decreases with age, 1 percent of 18-year-olds continue to deal with this issue. Since puberty does not cure bedwetting, there is no reason to wait for your child to reach the teen years before starting treatment.
Medication is a sure cure for bedwetting. Shortterm medications can work well in situations when a child has to be dry (for example, camps or sleepovers), but it rarely helps a child permanently overcome bedwetting. In fact, children who use alarms are nine times more likely to become dry and stay dry than those who rely on medication alone.

The Natural Resources Defense Council notes that today's energy-efficient refrigerators will use less than half the energy of models made as recently as 15 years ago.
Add more insulation. Adding more insulation to a home can reduce energy consumption in the winter, when the home will feel warmer and allow you to keep the thermostat at a more reasonable number.
Install high-efficiency water fixtures. Few people think about how much water they consume over the course of a typical day, but the figures might be eye opening to those who hope to adopt a more eco-friendly lifestyle. According to the United States Geological Survey's Water Science School, it is generally accepted that the average person uses between 80 and 100 gallons of water each day. Showers seem to be especially wasteful, as older showerheads might be using as much as 5 gallons per minute, or 50 gallons of water during a 10-minute shower. Today's high-efficiency low-flow showerheads can provide a strong shower stream while reducing water consumption. Such showerheads are also less taxing on your water heater, reducing your energy consumption as a result. Homeowners can also install high-efficiency toilets that use as little as 1.3 gallons of water per flush (compared to older models that consumed as many as 5 gallons per flush). The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that installing water-efficient fixtures and appliances would save more than 3 trillion gallons of water and more than $18 billion annually.

Despite such advancements, many professional environments are still consuming far more energy than is necessary, proving that there is still progress to be made with regard to how we use technology and protect the planet. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 30 percent of energy consumed by office buildings is used inefficiently, while the Energy Star program notes that 17 percent of greenhouse gas emissions come from commercial buildings' energy use. That leaves many opportunities for those who want to usher their offices into the eco-friendly era to make changes that will conserve energy.
Consider new lighting. Energy Star notes that lighting is
typically the most costly portion of many companies' monthly electric bills. However, flipping switches at the end of each day is not the only way business owners can cut their lighting costs. Many companies prefer to have lights on overnight for security purposes, but motion detection lighting systems are more ecofriendly and can pay for themselves over the long haul. Such systems will only turn on when movement is detected in the building. This saves owners the cost of illuminating empty offices overnight, but still enables them to protect buildings with lights in the case of break-ins.
Encourage workers to put their computers to sleep when not at their desks. Screen savers might be aesthetically appealing, but
that beauty comes at a steep price. Screen savers use the same amount of energy while you are away as the computer does while you are hard at work. The United States Department of Energy suggests that companies hoping to make their office environments more eco-friendly should encourage workers to put their computers to sleep when they will be away from their desks for 20 minutes or more. Stock prices can be volatile but you can minimize the volatility by owning stocks through diversified mutual funds. Investing on a regular basis allows you to take
advantage of the stock market downturns through dollar cost averaging.
Don’t follow the herd. The Great Panic of 2008 turned
out to be one of the greatest buying opportunities. Stock prices fell by more than 50 percent during this downturn and recovered to move on to new highs. Unfortunately, many investors sold their stocks during this period instead of buying as evidenced by the net redemptions of stock mutual funds, which totaled in the billions. This prompted legendary investor Warren Buffett to write in an op-ed article for the Wall Street Journal, "A simple rule dictates my buying: Be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful."

Ways to Catch Up On Retirement Savings
he virtues of saving for retirement are extolled from the moment young men and women begin their professional careers. Such advice is sound, and though retirement is a long way off from the start of one's career, those professionals who heed these words of wisdom and start saving early are bound to benefit down the road. However, even the best advice can be ignored from time to time, and many people simply do not save enough for retirement. A 2013 survey from Fidelity Investments revealed just how much financial trouble the average American is likely to be in upon retirement. The survey asked more than 2,000 participants a range of questions on topics, including their health, retirement and saving habits, and found that the average baby boomer, which includes those born between 1946 and 1964, was on track to reach just 81 percent of their retirement income needs. Those needs include food, shelter and medical care. The study also found that 40 percent of participants across all generations were saving less than 6 percent of their salaries for retirement. That is especially troubling when considering 60

financial planners often advise men and women to save 10 to 15 percent of their salaries for retirement. Some simple arithmetic and an examination of assets, including retirement accounts and savings, can shed light on how rosy or bleak a person's retirement looks. Young professionals have time to make up for their indiscretions, but men and women over 50 who have not saved enough must get to work immediately to ensure their retirement years are comfortable. The following are a handful of ways men and women can catch up on retirement savings.
Start spending less. Men and women over 50 know that the sand in their earnings hourglass is running out, and those behind on retirement savings need to make the most of their earnings in the years ahead. That means cutting out any unnecessary expenses so that money can be used to save for retirement. Examine all of your monthly and annual expenses to find ways to trim some fat. You may want to downsize your vehicle to a less expensive and more fuel-efficient make and model. Golfers can cancel their country club memberships in favor of golfing
on more affordable public courses that do not charge hefty annual membership fees. Slashing spending will not be easy, but doing so is the first step toward catching up on your retirement savings.
Contribute more to your employer-sponsored retirement plan. If you have not been contributing the maximum amount to your employer-sponsored retirement plan, start doing so. This is especially beneficial if your employer matches your contributions. Contributing more to such plans should not drastically affect your take-home pay now if the plan is a pretax plan like a 401(k).
Make IRA catch-up contributions. The Internal Revenue Service allows men and women over the age of 50 to make annual catch-up contributions up to $5,500. These contributions must be made to a retirement plan via elective deferrals, and there are additional requirements as well. Though it is best to put as much money into tax-advantaged accounts, if you are already maxing out your contributions to such accounts, it is still good to sock away money into a traditional taxable savings account. It is unwise to expect your retirement accounts to fully fund your lifestyle in retirement, so you will need, or at least want, a substantial amount of money in savings. Postpone retirement. Though it is not ideal for men and women with a target retirement date in mind, postponing the day you call it quits is another way to catch up on retirement savings. In addition, Americans who work longer can increase their Social Security benefit because working longer should allow them to delay the day they start taking Social Security payments. Designed to promote physical and mental health, yoga has helped millions of people across the globe control their stress and improve their flexibility, and studies have shown that yoga is only growing in popularity. According to a study conducted by the Harris Interactive Service Bureau, roughly 20 million Americans practiced yoga in 2012, marking a 29 percent increase from just four years earlier. While some men and women over 50 may feel their time to take up yoga has passed, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, yoga can pay numerous dividends for the over 50 crowd.
Helps alleviate high blood pressure. High blood pressure is
a potentially dangerous condition that makes the heart work harder to pump blood to the body. High blood pressure contributes to a hardening of the arteries known as atherosclerosis, and can even contribute to the development of heart failure. A person's risk of developing high blood pressure increases with age. A normal blood pressure is 120 over 80, but people with high blood pressure often have blood pressure readings of 140/90 and above. Studies have shown that yoga can reduce the top number, referred to as the systolic blood pressure. In a study published in the Journal of Clinical Hypertension, researchers found that men and women who practiced yoga for six hours a week for 11 weeks reduced their systolic blood pressure by 33 points.
Helps maintain healthy weight. While yoga may not help
men and women shed weight as effectively as a more vigorous activity, it can help them maintain healthy weight. Many men and women over 50 find vigorous or strenuous physical activity too demanding, and might not be able to perform such activities with the frequency necessary to prevent weight gain. However, while yoga is physically demanding, those who practice yoga often find it takes a smaller toll on their bodies than more traditional strength training. Another way yoga can help to maintain a healthy weight is through its relation to stress. Yoga can also help to relieve stress, and lower stress levels reduce the likelihood that men and women will overeat, which is a common response to elevated stress levels.
Promotes strong bones. Osteoporosis is a medical condition
Though yoga might not have been popular when today's men and women over 50 were in their 20s and 30s, this does not mean they cannot take advantage of the numerous physical and mental benefits yoga has to offer.
