Spring is in the air! protect your skin in the sun

any of us live in the Valley of the Sun for exactly that, the sun and for the number of days we can be outdoors and enjoy it. But it’s important to remember the havoc this exposure can wreak on our skin. While avoiding skin cancer is the primary reason for discussing SPF protection, the sun is equally destructive to collagen and premature photo-aging. Some think only to apply sun screens when heading to the beach or spending long hours of fun in the sun. But daily application of SPF is required to protect your skin from cancer and photo-aging every day. UVA rays for instance are responsible for photo-aging, penetrating deeper into the skin than its counterpart, and UVA penetrates through glass. That’s right your commute to and from work is actually very harmful to your skin. UVB is more responsible for the carcinogenic effects on the skin and causing sun burn. Regular application of sunscreen to all exposed body parts will offer you 93%-97% more protection daily. SPF clothing is also available to cover exposed areas during drive time or during longer exposure times.

Common complaints about wearing sun screen are that they can feel greasy, oily, or may irritate skin or eyes. This prevents many people from complying with daily use or repeat application. These symptoms are usually due to the multi-vowel chemical agents

used in manufacturing. Chemical sun screen agents such as Aminobenzoic Acid or Benzophenones are chemical absorbers of UVA/UVB and offer only partial protection. Other ingredients offer a physical block from the UV rays. These are seen on active ingredient labels as Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide. They are responsible for the white or opaque coverage many are familiar with and don’t like. However, new technology has micronized the particles to be more cosmetically acceptable. Most medical grade skin care lines offer many sunscreens that contain one or both of these ingredients. As well as some, protect against harmful infrared rays or have DNA repair technology for anti-aging and photo damage. When it comes to which SPF number to purchase it seems one must have a science degree.The FDA will not allow any sun screen manufacturer to label SPF higher than 50 SPF. This is because the curve of protection drops off after 30 SPF and anything higher is just confusion to the consumer. They must also label whether the product is protective against, sunburn, cancer, photo-aging or all three. So this spring while enjoying the outdoors remember to chose an SPF of at least 30, apply often (every 80 minutes), and apply an adequate amount (a shot glass full). New salon delivers sustainability and luxury in modern hair salon Twenty-five-year-old Willow Mullin recently opened a new hair salon at Frank Lloyd Wright and Thompson Peak Parkway in Scottsdale called Willow Hair Design, and she’s committed to making it completely sustainable. “Scottsdale hasn’t seen anything like it,” she says. “We want to have zero impact on the environment and be carbon neutral, something pretty uncommon for the hair care industry.” Willow is in the third generation of a family of cosmetologists. Her education began at an early age after being exposed to (and inspired by) her mother’s natural talent behind the chair. Willow knew at a very young age that she wanted to follow in her mother’s footsteps by going into the hair care industry. She went on to make history as the first graduate of Paul Mitchell The SchoolChicago to fulfill Dean’s List requirements. Willow is now a Master Artisan, and a certified Davines Color and Cutting Educator. “I’ve always been extremely passionate about making others feel beautiful,” Mullin says. “It’s really important to me to create beautiful hair without diminishing any beauty from the environment.”

This modern salon uses a hanging blow-dryer system that limits energy use to only when the blow dryer is actively being used on a guest. Customers also shouldn’t expect to receive a bottled water upon their arrival but rather a glass of water. No 1980s aerosol hairsprays, either. That’s because Willow’s sustainability mission can be found throughout the salon, from the hair care products it carries and uses (Davines Italia products, a sustainable hair care company based in Parma, Italy) to the recycled paper products and eco-friendly cleaners it deploys. The Successful Sunrise Foundation A small organization with a big heart

The Successful Sunrise Foundation was established Feb. 14, 2015, and is appropriately dubbed “a small organization with a big heart.” The vision has been clear from the beginning: “Animals are rescued then trained to provide emotional support and therapy to children facing challenges, veterans suffering from PTSD [post-traumatic stress disorder] or any other form of disability, and women who have been sexually trafficked,” says founder Sharla Simmers. The inspiration behind the organization began because of Shayna, Simmers’ adopted daughter. During a difficult separation and eventual divorce, Shayna became aware of her adoption. It was a challenging time for the family, especially Shayna, but horse therapy helped her flourish. After witnessing the wonderful changes Shayna experienced, Simmers began mapping out a plan on how she could help underserved children benefit from horse therapy. She wanted other kids, regardless of circumstance, challenge, disability or socioeconomic status, to be able to be enriched by animal and equine therapy. Most of the animals at The Successful Sunrise Foundation Ranch are rescued from abuse, neglect, and abandonment, or donated by a family that can no longer care for their animal. In addition, the charity has a partnership with a Bureau of Land Management program where incarcerated inmates in Florence train wild horses that are then used by program participants. Only animals showing an interest in being working animals are trained; other animals happily live their lives grazing and playing on the ranch.

The foundation has also hosted the AASK [Aid to Adoption of Special Kids] foster care siblings program. When foster children are taken from an unfavorable situation, they are placed where there is availability, which often means separated from their siblings. Unfortunately, this could mean being placed in a group home or shelter. The ranch is now in partnership with the foster care sibling program by providing a place for siblings to be reunited. Although different activities try to be scheduled, the program has an open invitation to the ranch. Simmers says that she is especially excited to be working with AASK and the foster care siblings program because she adopted Shayna from AASK. Simmers added that she knew it would be a big financial commitment to open up the foundation and put close to $1 million of her personal money to purchase the ranch and fund the organization and its programs. The sustainability of the ranch is paramount and the business plan is to provide boarding, horseback riding lessons, hay rides, horse leasing, farm memberships, birthday parties, weddings, corporate and family events to offset costs; therefore the monies from contributors, sponsors and donors would 100 percent go toward the programs.

But, with growth comes cost, and budget is quickly running extremely low. The foundation needs the help of the community to continue to keep their doors open, animals fed and programs going. The Successful Sunrise Foundation’s policy is never to turn a child, veteran, woman or animal away.

“It is the foundation’s hope that all who come here have a place where they can call home…a place to heal, find love, support, encouragement, empowerment and peace,” Simmers says. “Every child, veteran and animal deserve a chance; let us not turn our backs to our children and veterans. Let us give them a voice and bring them peace and joy.”

Understanding your risk Studies have shown moderate alcohol consumption can reduce a person's risk of developing certain diseases, including diabetes and coronary artery disease. Though the health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption might be widely known, the link between cancer and alcohol consumption does not garner as much attention. While many people consume alcohol without ever getting cancer that does not mean their risk isn't increasing. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, drinking too much alcohol weakens the immune system, making the body a much easier target for disease, including cancer. And these effects are immediate. Drinking a lot on just a single occasion makes it hard for the body to fight infection for up to 24 hours after consumption. The NIAAA also reports that drinking too much alcohol increases a person's risk of developing certain cancers, including cancers of the mouth, esophagus, throat, liver, and breast. In addition, the American Cancer Society notes that alcohol consumption may also increase a person's risk of developing cancer of the pancreas. That's because alcohol causes the pancreas to produce toxic substances that can eventually lead to pancreatitis, an inflammation and swelling of the blood vessels in the pancreas that can prevent proper digestion. The reasons alcohol raises the risk of developing cancer can vary depending on the type of cancer. For example, heavy alcohol use can damage the liver, potentially causing inflammation that can increase the risk of developing liver cancer. In addition, a woman who consumes just a few drinks per week might be unknowingly increasing her risk of developing breast cancer, as alcohol can affect estrogen levels in the body. When examining the link between alcohol consumption and cancer it's important to note that the type of drink consumed is not the most important factor to consider. That's because ethanol is the type of alcohol found in alcoholic drinks, and the standard size drinks — 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor — contain the same amount of ethanol. So more so than the type of drink that's consumed, it's the amount of the drink consumed over time that can increase a person's risk of developing cancer. Men and women who want to cut down on their alcohol consumption, and likely reduce their risk of developing cancer, can consider the following tips:

peanuts or pretzels might make a perfect complement to a glass of beer, their salt content will only make you more thirsty, increasing the chance that you will drink more than is healthy.

Do more than just drink when going out. If you're

going out for a night on the town, be sure drinking isn't the focal point of the night. Do something other than drink, whether it's dancing, playing pool or throwing darts, to slow down your drinking. The more preoccupied you are with another activity, the less likely you are to over consume.

Don't relieve stress with a drink. Alcohol should not be used as a means to relieve stress, as alcohol's physical effects on your body will only exacerbate the effects of stress. Relieve stress in more positive ways, whether through exercise or another activity that has a calming effect.

Keep track of your drinking habits. Monitoring your drinking habits can give you a better picture of how much alcohol you consume on a regular basis. Knowing how much you're consuming and the potentially dangerous side effects of overconsumption can be a motivating factor to cut back.

Go Green to Reduce Lung Cancer Risk Lung cancer affects millions of people across the globe. The second most common cancer in both men and women, lung cancer accounts for roughly 13 percent of all new cancers, according to the American Cancer Society. As deadly as lung cancer can be, men, women and children can take steps to greatly reduce their risk of developing the disease. Lung cancer can affect both smokers and nonsmokers, which is why anyone can employ some healthy — and ecofriendly — tips for keeping lung cancer at bay. Grow fresh garlic. Researchers have linked consuming raw garlic to lowering one’s risk for lung cancer. A study from the Jiangsu Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention in China found that frequent consumption of raw garlic cut the risk of lung cancer by 44 percent among lung cancer patients and healthy adults who did not smoke over a period of seven years. The benefits are linked to allicin, which is released once raw garlic is smashed or diced. It can reduce inflammation and cell damage caused by free radicals. Transition to all-natural cleaning products. Limit exposure to carcinogenic chemicals that may be hiding in common household items. Look for products comprised of all-natural ingredients and those that will not harm the environment or personal health. Get a radon test. Radon is an odorless, tasteless gas that occurs when uranium breaks down naturally in the soil. Homes that are built over natural deposits can have high levels of indoor radon, which can contribute to lung cancer risk. Drink more green tea. The antioxidants in green tea may inhibit tumor growth. Data presented to the American Association of Cancer Research in 2010 by Taiwanese researcher I-Hsin Lin revealed that smokers and nonsmokers who didn’t drink green tea had more than five times a greater risk of developing lung cancer than those who drank at least one cup of green tea daily. Walk or bike more often. Leaving the car at home and opting for body-powered means of transportation is good for the planet and your personal health. Being physically active not only helps prevent lung cancer, but also it can improve survival and quality of life for those who already have the disease, says a 2007 study presented at the American Association for Cancer Research’s Sixth Annual International Conference on Cancer Prevention. azhealthandliving.com |April 2016

The Dangers of Zinc Deficiency & What You Can Do About It Zinc is an essential trace mineral that is intricately involved in hundreds of activities inside our cells. At the moment, research estimates that 100 to 300 different enzymes require zinc to accomplish their tasks. In many cases, zinc acts as a catalytic component for those enzymes, aiding the biochemical processes that help cells function regularly. Enzymes, and even hormones, hormone receptors and other proteins, also need zinc as a building block in their own chemical structures. Zinc helps enzymes and other molecules carry out cellular processes like DNA synthesis, cell division, gene expression, cell death and cell metabolism, making it vital to our normal growth and development and overall health. Not only does zinc help grow our bodies; it also helps protect it by supporting our immune cells, augmenting antioxidant activity, and facilitating healing of open wounds. In recent years, research has also found possible associations between zinc and normal learning and emotional functioning in our brains.

What are signs of zinc deficiency? Zinc’s specific roles in healthy bodies explain many of the symptoms that arise when zinc is deficient.

Stunted development A major result of zinc deficiency is slowed growth. Some signs are a loss of appetite and/or weight loss. Without zinc to support DNA synthesis and cell division, there is, in some sense, a lacking ability to sustain the cellular processes that ultimately lead to a growing body. Zinc deficiency is even felt in the brain, altering central nervous system development and less-tangible traits like behavior. Overall mental slowness can result. Also related to development - a severe absence of zinc for normal sex hormone production can lead to delayed sexual maturity in both males and females, seen as delayed menstruation in females and a lack of reproductive organ development and low sperm count in males.

Impaired immune function In research on children from developing countries, a strong association is found between low zinc status and increased susceptibility to pneumonia and infections that cause diarrhea. One theory for this link is that, like most 28 April 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

cells, immune cells need zinc to undergo cell division and propagate. Zinc deficiency may result in a smaller pool of first-line-of-defense immune cells that can attack infectious viruses and bacteria. Secondly, research has found zinc deficiency decreases the activity of macrophages, a specific subset of immune cells that activates other immune cells and can engulf and dispose of cellular waste, bacteria or even cancer cells.

Delayed wound healing Zinc is involved in numerous processes that enhance skin cell migration and the removal of old skin cells during wound repair. It also has some antioxidant activity when combined with the enzyme, superoxide dismutase (SOD), which can help fight against bacterial toxins and prevent tissue damage from inflammation. In individuals with low zinc levels, wounds take longer to heal and the risk for tissue cell death is increased.

Effects on prostate, eyes, taste and smell Some researchers caution that zinc deficiency can initiate prostate enlargement or even Prostate cancer because zinc is unavailable for normal DNA synthesis and cell division. In eyes, zinc plays a very important role in delivering vitamin A from the liver to the retina so that melanin, a protective pigment, can be produced. Without adequate zinc, the risk for poor night vision and cataracts can increase. Even an enzyme involved in our ability to taste and smell relies on zinc to be active. A loss of smell is a common first sign of chronic zinc deficiency.


High-risk groups With all the research surrounding zinc deficiencies, studies have also shown that symptoms can be corrected in part by zinc supplementation. Some reasons for zinc deficiencies in the U.S. are not so obvious, and even though you might consider your diet to be well balanced, you could still be at risk for consuming too little zinc. Here are some groups who are at higher risk: •Vegetarians Even though zinc is present in non-meat sources like beans, grains and seeds, zinc concentrations are comparatively lower than in meats. In addition, phytates - present in whole-grain breads, cereals and legumes - bind zinc and inhibit its intestinal absorption. Soaking beans, grains, and seeds in water for several hours before cooking may make their zinc more available. Research also shows that leavening seems to break down phytates, so leavened grain products like bread may be a better zinc source than unleavened products like crackers. • Older Adults As we age, our diets tend to become less diverse, which limits a portion of the nutrients we take in. Meat, with its more bioavailable zinc, is frequently left out of meals. A national health study found that 35-45 percent of adults aged 60 years or older do not consume enough zinc in their diets. Twenty-five percent of the subjects were still zinc deficient even after zinc supplements were taken into account. • Pregnant Women Because fetuses require high levels of zinc for rapid growth and development, pregnant women may be more susceptible to zinc deficiency. Also, prenatal vitamins tend to include iron and folate in their formulations, which can significantly decrease the bioavailability of zinc. Zinc deficiency in pregnant women increases the risks for maternal morbidity, preterm delivery, and babies who are smaller than normal for their gestational age. • Exclusively breastfed infants Breastfeeding tends to decrease zinc stores for mothers, but also, the zinc levels in breast milk are not high enough for infants past a certain age. Breast milk provides about 2 mg of zinc per day, enough for babies only in the first 4-6 months of life. Once the baby reaches 7-12 months, they will require 3 mg of zinc per day, at which time, ageappropriate foods and/or formulas are recommended.

How much zinc do you need? Human zinc stores need to be partially replenished daily. These are the Institute of Medicine’s established Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) per day for

the average healthy individual: • 0-6 months: 2 mg • 7-12 months & 1-3 years: 3 mg • 4-8 years: 5 mg • 9-13 years: 8 mg • 14-18 years: 11 mg (males), 9 mg (females), 12 mg (pregnancy), 13 mg (lactation) • 19+ years: 11 mg (males), 8 mg (females), 11 mg (pregnancy), 12 mg (lactation)

Zinc food sources According to USDA National Nutrient Database listing zinc content for specific foods, oysters contain more zinc per serving than any other food. However, red meat and poultry are also great sources and provide the majority of zinc in the American diet. If you’re looking for non-meat foods that are high in zinc, beans, nuts, seeds, whole grains and oats, and fortified cereals are some good options. As mentioned previously, though, these sources have slightly limited zinc bioavailability compared to meats. For some unconventional natural sources of zinc, you can also try crab, wild rice and soybeans. Midterm elections yield disproportionately low participation among young voters at a time when each additional vote yields the greatest impact. Debt from wars and unadjusted retirement benefits is piled onto the shoulders of our future. Adults make the choices and kids get sent the unpaid portion of the bill with interest. It seems even informed, motivated youth often feel powerless to make a meaningful impact. If they were to believe they can drive broad positive change, they’d be more inclined to communicate their thoughts to decision makers and participate electorally. Here are four ways young people can get involved and affect positive gains:

Encourage your friends to vote. Yes vote yourself, but encourage friends to do so as well, to demonstrate your support in numbers. Whereas Obama inspired young people to vote in numbers not seen since the early 1970s, enthusiasm fell precipitously for midterm elections in 2010. Only 49 percent of young people, ages 18 to 29, were registered to vote in the 2010 midterm elections, 45 percent of whom said they weren’t interested. Twentyfour percent didn’t know how to register. Registering to vote is a straightforward process; you can learn more at your state’s elections office website or at rockthevote.org.

Volunteer for a candidate’s campaign. If this seems

overly ambitious, you may not be giving your political views enough credit. Review as many candidates as you can find online and support those with the courage, intelligence, and heart to identify and resolve problems, even if they have limited traction. If feeling particularly ambitious, expand your search to include those who have expressed an interest. you can feel enthusiastic about supporting. If you haven’t found anyone, keep looking.

Articulate your views to lawmakers in writing about a personally important issue. If promoting a

I accomplished most of those goals, and a key to those achievements was writing them down and placing the paper where, for four years, I could see it every night. By writing them down, I had made my goals clear and objective.

Lean toward a “we-centered” ego rather than a “me-centered” one. When I traded in my baseball uniform for surgical scrubs, I noticed the importance of stripping the many layers of the ego I once had. This is really important: Your ego doesn’t need to be visible to everyone – or even anyone but yourself. Being a top performer requires ego – it helps fuel selfconfidence and provides some of the motivation necessary to achieve. But it should not hinder the performance of your team: your coworkers, friends and family. Over time, by keeping your ego to yourself, it becomes easier to enact

Sleep-disordered breathing symptoms can both overlap and mimic those of sleep-disordered breathing. Many dentists consider temporomandibular joint problems to be somewhat of a gray area because the conditions associated with its complex task of permitting the movement of the jaw without friction is sometimes difficult to define and even more complicated to treat.

Some dentists believe that sleep-disordered breathing is partly the existence of a temporomandibular joint problem and partly the manifestation of a sleep-disordered breathing problem. The simplest way to understand the connection: the bruxism (teeth grinding) or jaw shifting associated with sleep-disordered breathing (occurring when sleeping patients are unconsciously trying to find the best possible positioning of their airway) may inflame the temporomandibular joint or exacerbate a problem with the joint that was pre-existing. Headaches, a clicking jaw, malocclusion (misalignment of teeth), and condyle and disc displacement are all associated with sleep-disordered breathing. However, these symptoms often occur in patients with sleepdisordered breathing as well. Research in the journal Sleep determined in 1993 that nocturnal headaches may be caused by temporomandibular joint disorder, or triggered by sleep-disordered breathing - “with very similar clinical manifestations but very different therapeutic implications.” If you have temporomandibular joint disorder, I suggest you ask your dentist to screen you for sleep-disordered breathing.

Q. How does exercise help low back pain? A. Exercise is an essential part of treatment

for low back pain. Generally speaking, low back pain is results of muscle strain, herniated disc or injury of the joint. Muscle and spinal discs are important to maintain stability of the spine. Spinal discs acts as a shock absorber between each vertebral bones of the spine. A herniated disc generates pressure and pinches the spinal nerves around and you will feel radicular pain around the lower back and leg areas. Gentle low back exercises are beneficial to build up strength of the low back and core muscles, prevent pain and improve flexibility. Low back exercises improve blood circulation through the body with the purpose of transporting nutrition and oxygen to the injured tissues. Healing could not occur without enough blood supply. Injured tissue such as the spinal discs do not get good blood supply and take time for recovery; in other words, the herniated disc needs a way to receive enough oxygen and nutrition for proper healing. The goal of exercise for patients with herniated discs is to effectively improve blood supply and assist the herniated disc back to its normal position. One exercise that I often guide patients to is to utilize the Swiss ball. This may include sitting on the Swiss ball with a straight and neutral posture, and gently bounce up and down for about two to three minutes during the therapy. Swiss ball exercise helps to mobilize the spinal discs and improve blood supply to bring more oxygen and nutrition. Exercises that benefit the low back help with improved flexibility of the muscles, reduced joint stiffness and buildup of low back and core strength.

A. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the U.S. amongst men and women, and the second leading cause of cancer related death overall. One in 20 Americans will suffer colorectal cancer that is about 5 percent of the National population. In this week, alone 19 people will lose their fight with colon cancer in Arizona. It is estimated that over 50 thousand deaths will occur from colorectal cancer this year. That is a staggering amount when you consider how highly treatable and curable the disease is in its early stages.

Have you heard of Blu-U in the treatment of persistent to moderate acne? A. There are many new studies that show how hearing loss can impact brain function. When the brain is deprived of sound, it can undergo reorganization. Prom Pointers & Safety Tips For high school students, excitement is in the air come the end of the school year. While graduation might be just over the horizon, prom is foremost on the minds of many students. Many schools celebrate prom with a dance and dinner on campus or at a rented venue. Prom is a chance for students to socialize and reminisce before graduating from high school. Prom can be a celebration of past friendships and a way to make new memories, but it should be remembered for all of the right reasons. By playing it safe, prom can be an experience students cherish for the rest of their lives. Both students and parents can take steps to ensure prom night is as safe as it is fun.

Be an involved parent. Involved parenting is the best way to make prom night safe. Parents should take an active role in understanding prom plans and set ground rules. Too often parents contribute to poor prom decisions, such as setting the tone for the night with toasts or encouraging potentially dangerous behavior by organizing hotel stays or large parties. Parents should have a detailed itinerary of their children’s prom night plans, including schedules, who will be accompanying kids to the prom and any post-prom activities. Request check-in calls or text messages and set a curfew.

Avoid scare tactics. In the weeks leading up to prom, school districts and police departments often stage mock automobile crashes to illustrate the dangers of distracted driving or driving while intoxicated. But studies have shown these tactics do not have long-term benefits. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ National Institutes of Health found that programs relying on scare tactics to prevent children and adolescents from engaging in certain behaviors are not only ineffective, but also may have adverse effects. Being open and honest with students and treating them like adults may be a more effective way to get through to them. Let them know you are available at all hours if they do not feel comfortable in a situation or need a ride home. 44 April 2016

Provide adult supervision. Responsible adults should supervise the prom and after-parties. Although it may not eliminate all opportunities for risky behavior, adequate supervision will serve as a deterrent. Encourage students to think before acting. Many students view prom as a deadline for certain perceived rites of passage. They may believe prom is the time to drink or try drugs for the first time or to go further intimately with a boyfriend or girlfriend. Parents should encourage kids to think before acting, letting them know that prom is not a night to throw caution to the wind and experiment.

Many cats and dogs peacefully coexist in their homes. Cats and dogs tend to have different body language but that should not be mistaken for opposition. Take, for example, a boisterous puppy who excitedly approaches visitors with its tail wagging to show friendliness. According to the animal experts at SlimDoggy.com, a resource for dog food, fitness and fun, cats interpret wagging tails as signs of anger or displeasure. Dogs like to sniff their “friends” and get to know them, and cats don’t favor this attention. When sniffed, cats may run off, unintentionally triggering dog's’ natural predatory instincts. Such an instance is a rough way for cats and dogs to begin a relationship, and it’s easy to see how such an introduction can lay a poor foundation for their relationship. Cats and dogs also have different social styles. While a cat may be content to be alone and approach visitors cautiously, dogs tend to be sociable and rush into situations if they think there is fun to be had. One way to foster a good relationship between cats and dogs is to control their initial introduction. If possible, separate the animals initially, giving cats a chance to warm up to their new situation. Upon introducing the two, it may be best to have the dog on a leash so that you can control its desire to lunge. Calmness is key; do not force the cat to come to the dog or vice versa. Reward calm behavior with treats. Repeat these steps until the pets appear to be used to each other. It’s important that pet owners recognize that, while cats and dogs may peacefully coexist in a home most of the time, their natural instincts may kick in every so often. Just separate the pets if they have a tiff. Going Solar is on the Rise Rising energy costs and a growing desire to live more ecofriendly lifestyles has spurred interest in solar panels to power our homes. Although solar panels have been around for quite some time, only recently have homes cloaked in panels aimed at capturing the rays of the sun begun to be so visible. The World Meteorological Organization reported that the solar industry saw a robust expansion of 41 percent in 2013, and that popularity continues to grow. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, in 2015 the solar industry grew 34 percent more than 2013 figures. Through the first half of the year, the solar industry supplied 40 percent of all new 2015 electric generating capacity - more than any other energy technology. Solar energy now has the cumulative electric capacity to power more than 4.6 million average American homes. According to Green Tech Media, American solar companies are now installing one solar system every four minutes. If the market continues to grow at this pace, through 2016 there will be a system installed every 20 seconds. These gains in the solar industry may have been spurred on by the Solar Investment Tax Credit, which the SEIA says has helped to lower the cost of solar energy by more than 73 percent.

How does solar energy work? Solar energy is turned into electric power through the photovoltaic (PV) cells located in the solar panels. The PV cells transform sunlight into direct electric current. An inverter built into the system converts the DC electricity into the alternating current (AC) that powers homes. The AC is sent to the home's electrical panel and used to power lights and other devices.

Low Maintenance Vegetable Gardening for a Bountiful Harvest Increase your harvest without increasing the size of your garden or workload. All you need is a bit of intensive planting along with some low maintenance techniques.

Invest some time upfront to prepare the garden soil. This will save you time throughout the growing season. Add several inches of organic matter and a slow release fertilizer into the top 8 to 12 inches of soil. The organic matter improves drainage in clay soils and increases moisture retention in sandy soils. The slow release fertilizer feeds the plants for several months, reducing the number of applications needed. You’ll have healthier plants that are better able to fend off pests and outcompete the weeds.

Match the plants with the right growing conditions.

Tomatoes, peppers and other vegetables that produce fruit need full sun. Leafy crops like lettuce are more tolerant of shade. Check plant tags and seed packets for planting details or download a free gardening app, like Homegrown with Bonnie Plants, for plant information, maintenance tips, weather reports and more.

Plant seeds and transplants in blocks with fewer pathways. Give each plant enough room to grow to its full size. Your rows will be closer together with just enough paths for weeding, watering and harvesting. You will be growing more plants and pulling fewer weeds with this strategy.

Interplant to further maximize your planting space. Plant short-season vegetables like lettuce and radishes in between properly spaced longer-season vegetables like broccoli and tomatoes. By the time the longer-season plants start filling the space, the shorter season plantings will be ready to harvest. You’ll be pulling radishes or cutting lettuce instead of weeds. Plus, you’ll harvest two crops from one row.

Plant successive crops throughout the growing season. Plant cool weather vegetables like spinach, radishes and lettuce in spring. Once these are harvested, replace with warm weather vegetables like beans, tomatoes or cucumbers. Finish off the season by filling any voids with a fall crop of cool weather vegetables. 48 April 2016

Go vertical to save space, reduce disease and make harvesting easier. Growing vine crops on supports lifts the fruit off the ground and increases the amount of light and airflow the plants receive, reducing the risk of disease. Plus, you’ll do less bending when it’s time to harvest.

Mulch the garden with pine straw/evergreen needles, shredded leaves, or other organic matter. These materials suppress the weeds, conserve moisture and add organic matter to the soil as they decompose. You’ll have fewer weeds to pull and not have to water as often.

Save time and water with the help of soaker hoses or drip irrigation. These systems apply the water directly to the soil where it is needed. Less water is lost to overspray, evaporation and runoff. They also reduce the risk and spread of disease by preventing water from settling on the leaves of the plants.

Give gifts that encourage activity. In lieu of toys that

promote sedentary lifestyles, give kids toys that encourage physical activity. Erect a basketball hoop in the driveway or go buy new bicycles for the whole family, resolving to go for a nightly ride together.

Restrict TV time. Establish house rules regarding how

many hours of television kids and adults can watch each day. Kids will follow their parents’ lead with regard to how much television they watch, so parents should be mindful of their own viewing habits, resisting the temptation to plop down on the couch for several hours each night. Don’t turn on the television at night until the whole family has engaged in some physical activity.

Five Tips For Improving a Kid’s Game There are many would-be athletes in their adolescence, but factors such as size and ability often pre-empt their efforts. I stand 5’10” tall and weigh in at 150 pounds – not exactly big by today’s basketball standards, even for a point guard. But what I lack in stature I more than makes up for in dedication, drive and love of the game. I was smaller in high school, which meant I really had to prove myself to earn the starting varsity position at point guard. I won the position and later was given the moniker “The Professor” for my uncanny ability to “school” opponents, whether while playing organized basketball or pickup streetball games. Basketball was always going to be part of my career, but you don’t have to be a professional street baller to make mastering an athletic skill worthwhile. Sports teach young people discipline and confidence, offer a form of expression, and keep kids in shape and out of trouble. Here are some tips on how to improve a kid’s basketball game:

Once the footwork for a move is understood, it becomes easier to practice and emulate the move. Things to help understand great footwork are watching great players play with a close eye, taking note of how they execute moves with their feet and watching footwork in slow motion on TiVo or a smartphone.

Get used to staying low. In basketball you want to protect the ball. Tall players are taught to keep the ball high and out of reach for smaller pickpocket defenders. If you stay low when making your move to the basket, this will maximize explosion and quickness, but it also makes stealing the ball much more difficult against defenders. Also, some of the best moves are made below the knees.

Train at the speed of the game. Don’t get stuck in practice. Your muscles won't be ready to take on full speed motions come game time if you don’t match your training with the actual speed of the game. Here, you may also want to combine other training techniques: stay low, get comfortable dribbling the ball while stationary (which your coach may not like during an actual game), and add the challenge of reduced friction with gloves and a slick wrap over the ball. Be a student of the game. Being a constant learner is key to becoming a great ballplayer. Always realizing that no matter what level you’re at there's always something new to learn to become a better player. Look at Michael Jordan – an athlete considered by many the best to ever play the game. He was still making massive strides in his skill set offensively and defensively into the mid-90s as his career was winding down. The same can be said of many of the NBA greats. That goes to show no matter what level you're at or where you rank among your teammates and peers there is always new things to be learned in order to improve your game.

2016 Best Actress A little over a month ago actress Brie Larson achieved an honor that most stars only dream about—she won the 2016 Academy Award for Best Actress. According to the Academy Award website, “Brie Larson is the 2016 Oscar winner for Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in the movie ‘Room.’ She had a busy year in 2015 also starring in ‘Trainwreck’ with Amy Schumer as well as the drama ‘Digging for Fire.’ Prior to that, she was known for her work in ‘21 Jump Street,’ ‘Short Term 12’ and ‘The Spectacular Now.’ This is the first Academy Award win for Brie Larson.” Dubbed this year’s “It Girl” by ABC News, Larson is anything but an overnight success as she’s been in the entertainment industry since childhood. Ironically, according to multiple media sources, Larson started out with the desire to be a singer. Instead, acting became her forte as she’s had multiple breakthrough roles. “Everyone wants a piece of the ‘new’ A-list starlet, but Larson is hardly new to the scene. How to Make Your Office More Eco-Friendly When adopting more eco-friendly lifestyles, it can be easy for men and women to overlook their offices. While drivers can drive in ways that conserve fuel and homeowners can take steps to reduce their energy consumption at home, few people may give as much thought to making their offices friendlier to the environment. But there are many environmentally friendly practices that business owners and their employees can adopt around the office.

Turn computers off at quitting time. Frequently turning computers on and off can produce small surges of energy each time the computer is turned on. But the United States Department of Energy notes that this energy surge pales in comparison to the energy consumed when computers are left on for long periods of time. When going home for the day or leaving your desk for more than 20 minutes, whether it’s during lunch hour or to attend a meeting, turn your monitor off. If you expect to be away from your computer for more than two hours, turn both the computer and the monitor off. Employers who make these suggestions to their employees may reduce their office energy consumption and save money along the way.

Recycle old equipment. Advancements in technology

now occur at a breakneck pace, so the equipment businesses use today may very well be obsolete tomorrow. Businesses that want to be more eco-friendly should recycle rather than discard old equipment. Simply throwing equipment away might even be illegal depending on where an office is located. Some electronics contain mercury, lead or arsenic, hazardous materials that can do significant damage to the environment when not properly disposed of. Some retailers, including the office supply chain Staples, accept old equipment for recycling at their stores at no charge to business owners. If equipment is still functional but somewhat outdated, look into donating it to local organizations in need.

Cut back on printing. Printing documents used to be

the most effective way to share them with coworkers and clients. But nowadays printing is one of the least efficient and least eco-friendly ways to share documents. Instead of printing documents to show coworkers, create PDFs and email the PDFs instead. Working from home is often seen as employee-friendly, but it also can benefit employers and the environment. When employees work from home, their employers need not purchase or lease as much office space, saving them substantial amounts of money. In addition, working from home cuts down on the number of commuters driving to work, decreasing fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. Employers who cannot allow employees to work from home full-time can still help the environment and their employees by allowing workers to work from home one or two days a week. Offices are not always eco-friendly, but there are several ways to make office life more efficient and environmentally friendly.


How Artificially Low Interest Rates Have Penalized Retirees

Retirees who depend on interest from savings to make it month to month haven’t had much to cheer about for several years. Interest rates were so low they might as well have been set at zero. Those low rates have been great for Wall Street, but not so great for retirees. Short term, Wall Street would prefer zero interest rates because it’s essentially free money to borrow, which allows for higher corporate earnings. Savers and retirees, on the other hand, have taken it on the chin. They can’t generate much of a return on their savings, and they may not be in a position to risk their money in the markets where a higher yield is possible. Interest rates, though, are about to get a boost. The Federal Reserve recently announced plans to hike its benchmark interest rate by about ¼ percentage point, the first increase in nearly a decade and a signal that the Federal Reserve is confident the U.S. economy has improved. But if you are a retiree who depends on interest income, don’t look for this to be a miracle fix. It’s an improvement, but savers aren’t going to see a large enough jump in interest to suddenly turn their finances – and retirements – completely around. You hear complaints from retirees about the interest rates and you can’t blame them. Many older people put their money into Treasury bonds or CDs, and live off that interest. They have been penalized the hardest over the last several years because the Fed decided to artificially keep rates low. That experience shows why it’s important for people to take an active role in their retirements. Here are three important points to keep in mind when planning for those golden years so you can thrive and not just try to survive:

Don’t let things just happen. Take control of all aspects of your life in retirement, from how you spend your time to how you manage your investments. The old

days of company pensions are gone for most people, so when you accept that the quality of your retirement is largely up to you and, if you act based on that idea, you are likely to have a happier and healthier retirement.

Focus on finances, not age. Traditionally, people think

of retiring at a certain age, such as 65, but that’s not the best way to plan. Instead, let finances be the deciding factor for when you are ready to retire. With that approach, you are more likely to have the savings necessary to sustain you for the rest of your life.

Don’t go it alone. Planning the right strategy for

Diet & Exercise Needs Change as Men & Women Age Maintaining a healthy weight is important at any age. But avoiding being overweight or obese can be particularly crucial for seniors, considering many illnesses are tied to body weight. Maintaining a healthy immune system also can require eating a balanced, nutritionally sound diet. The Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center at Durham Medical Center in Virginia says that people need to change how they eat for every decade they reach. Caloric intake should be reduced because individuals are generally moving around less, have less muscle and their metabolic rates decline. People who find that they are having trouble losing weight in their 50s and older may be basing weight-loss goals on calorie recommendations for younger people. One challenging thing about eating less overall is supplementing with more nutrient-rich foods. Older bodies still require similar amounts of protein, vitamins and minerals as younger ones, but older men and women must balance that need with their need to consume less calories. Consuming more fruits, vegetables and lean protein sources, including beans, and choosing whole grains over refined starchy foods can be the key. Watch what you drink, as well. Soft drinks and other sugary beverages may be packed with calories you don’t need. Choose unsweetened beverages and opt for water as much as possible. Protect yourself against dehydration, which can be harder to detect as you get older.

Strength training also helps you develop stronger bones, which can help prevent fractures. In addition, as you gain muscle, your body will begin to burn calories more efficiently, making your time in and out of the gym more productive.

In addition to modifying food and beverage choices and reducing their calorie intake, seniors should continue to exercise. Healthy eating paired with moderate exercise remains one of the best combinations for healthy weight loss or weight maintenance.

Apart from diet and exercise, aging adults may need to consult with their doctors about nutritional supplements. Your body may produce less stomach acid as you get older, making it more difficult to absorb vitamins from food, including vitamin B12 and vitamin D. Aging skin is less able to transform sunlight into the vitamin, which can affect the body’s ability to absorb calcium. Deficiencies in vitamins D and B12 and calcium can result in a number of health conditions. Routine blood work can help pinpoint whether you are deficient in key nutrients.

The goal is to consume fewer calories and expend more energy. While cardiovascular exercises can be a good way to get the heart pumping and stimulate your metabolic rate, as you age you should perform strength-training and weight-bearing exercises as well. Muscle mass naturally diminishes with age, and according to the Mayo Clinic if you avoid strength exercises you can eventually lose muscle and increase the percentage of fat in your body. 60 April 2016

How Older Adults Can Reduce Their Risk of Falls

Falls are one of the biggest contributors to fatal and nonfatal injuries among seniors. Such accidents not only threaten safety, but they also can compromise a person’s independence. Falls can cause broken bones, impaired mobility and even death. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says every 13 seconds an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall. In addition, every 20 minutes an older adult dies from a fall. One-third of Americans age 65 and older falls each year. Falls do not have to be an accepted side effect of aging. With some balance training and other techniques, older men and women can avoid falls and the injuries that result. The National Council on Aging and its National Falls Prevention Resource Center has implemented fall-prevention programs. By following these guidelines, individuals can remain safe and upright.

Get a vision checkup. A decrease in visual ability and perception can increase risk of falls. Impaired vision can cause people to trip over items they can’t see, miss steps or bump into obstacles. Make sure your vision has been checked recently and you are using contact lenses or glasses as prescribed by an eye doctor.

Know your medication side effects. Ask your doctor about the medications you are taking and whether they can contribute to dizziness or decreased balance. Medicines that affect blood pressure can lead to lightheadedness as well. Your doctor may be able to substitute a medication with an alternative if your existing prescription is affecting your balance.

Begin a regimen of strength training. The National Institutes of Health suggests strength exercises to keep muscles strong. Strength training also can impact the strength of bones, as well as increase metabolism to keep weight and blood sugar in check.

Engage in specific balance exercises. Balance exercises can improve stability. Balancing on one foot while standing for a period of time is one such exercise. Stand up from a

seated position without using your hands, then shift your weight from the left to the right while standing on the respective leg on that side. A physical therapist can work with you to ensure you are using correct form in balance exercises.

Try Tai chi. Look for tai chi classes at a gym or senior center. Tai chi is a form of movement training that can help strengthen the body, improve balance and improve flexibility.

Be aware of posture. Try to maintain weight over the ankles. Do not lean too far forward or backward, which can cause you to topple over. Keep your feet in a wide stance while standing to improve stability.

Don’t make quick movements. Always stand up and sit down slowly. Jarring motions may affect equilibrium or blood pressure, leading to unsteadiness. Always consult with a doctor before beginning any balance exercises or if you suspect balance issues are stemming from an illness or condition. With practice and patience, older adults can remain independent and prevent falls. azhealthandliving.com | April 2016

But don’t let the disparity of technological upbringing fool you – today’s technology is changing the way retirees are living. Six out of 10 people who are 65 and older are active online, according to Pew Research Center. Online technology is so ubiquitous today, and gadgets are increasingly user-friendly that it’s no surprise more retirees are active online. There are multiple benefits to technology that positively affect finances during retirement. Here are a few ways in which retirees financially benefit from today’s technology:

Telecommuting in retirement. Just as the line for working hours and home life has blurred for most professionals today, so too has the line for pre- and postretirement. About 40 percent of baby boomers are planning to work during retirement, according to AARP. Technology has made telecommuting easier for everyone, especially retirees, who often prefer to be in retirement surroundings – the beach, their home and with their family – than under fluorescent lights in a suit. And, the Web allows ambitious seniors ways to update their skills, such as learning a new program. Depending on your unique circumstances, it may be advisable for you to work, at least part-time during retirement. Many retirees prefer to work, too. It keeps them active while yielding some extra cash.

Tech seems to keep seniors younger. Tablets, smartphones and computers are keeping seniors four to eight years younger, suggests a new study from the journal Intelligence. The cognitive ability of individuals age 50 and older from a decade ago compared to those of the same age today shows that an upward drift in mean cognitive abilities is similar across educational levels. The common differentiating factor is the increased use of technology. 62 April 2016

Online resources are virtually infinite, and retirees can easily learn more about finances – especially with increased free time. And, there are many tools enabling retirees to track how their portfolio is performing, and why it’s performing that way. Education in one’s own finances is so crucial for anyone, especially retirees. Online resources enable learning to be more self-directed, which better involves the individual.
