It’s not in your head.

Bring more pleasure back into your life &

BECOME A MORE INTIMATE YOU!

T

he loss of sexual pleasure and enjoyment is not in your head. Pregnancy, childbirth, perimenopause, menopause, and the natural aging process all have an impact on the appearance, tightness, and lubrication of a woman’s vagina. These

changes can all diminish a woman’s pleasure and desire for sexual intimacy. Lack of sexual intimacy can have a detrimental effect on a woman’s well-being, overall happiness, and contentment in a relationship-by both partners! Don’t let discomfort hinder your pleasure at any age. Additional benefits of the procedure are visible plumpness and improved aesthetic appearance as well as treatment of urinary leakage or stress incontinence.

What do you do? Now there’s a pain-free, risk-free, non-surgical solution that brings immediate relief with no side effects. It’s ThermiVa-a better alternative to invasive and risky vaginal surgery, which is painful and requires a long, sex-free recovery period-not exactly the first step you want to take in rebuilding intimacy and sexual satisfaction. What is ThermiVa? ThermiVa treatments are administered in a series of three appointments, spaced 4 weeks apart. Each one is only about 30 minutes and requires no downtime afterward, women are able to return to normal activities as soon as they walk out and many report having improved intimacy that night with both parties noticing a difference! ThermiVa delivers comfortable controlled heat, generated by radiofrequency through a small proble. This heat causes tissues to contract and restores tightness, while stimulating the production of collagen to increase moisture and lubrication. Both of which lead to an improved vaginal appearance and function leading to enhanced intimacy, confidence, and ultimately satisfaction. This regenerated pelvic floor strength is also what aids in issues of urinary stress incontinence.

After all, what other treatment has a 100% patient satisfaction rating?

Relief is right here in the West Valley Dr. Kukurin was named a Top Chiropractor by the Consumers Research Council of America. He is listed in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare. With over 20 years of experience using acupuncture, chiropracticand science based nutritional therapies, the results produced by our methods have been featured on local TV newscasts, published in scientific journals, indexed in the National Library of Medicine and have been presented Knee Pain at medical conferences at Johns Hopkins and the Peripheral Nerve Society.

Diabetic Neuropathy, Peripheral Neuropathy Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, Plantar Fasciitis If you are suffering from lower back, buttocks and or leg pain or your feet or legs are cramping, numb or burning especially at night, you almost certainly have a condition which involves the nerves of the legs. The largest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve (pictured in red to the right), starts in the lower back, runs through the muscles of the buttocks and down to the tip of the toes. If this nerve gets irritated, you can experience really terrible pain anywhere along the course of the nerve. You may also experience burning, numbness and odd sensations in your muscles. Irritation of this nerve may produce severe cramping or crawling sensations in your muscles. Of course, your back and leg pain can be caused by a pinched nerve in your lower back. This can be from a vertebra that is out of place, it can be caused by a slipped disc or it can be caused by spinal stenosis or any combination of these problems. Each of these conditions, bad discs, spinal stenosis or displaced vertebrae have very different treatments. Knowing exactly why you have your back and leg troubles is absolutely essential for effective care.

Headaches, Vertigo, TMJ, Migraines, Sinus Headache Neck and Shoulder Pain, Pinched Nerves, Tennis Elbow and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Spinal Stenosis, Sciatica, Lower Back, Hip and Leg Pain

So how do you find results? The answer is called Integrative Neurology. Neurology is the study of the nerves. This allows us to diagnose tough nerve conditions like spinal stenosis, disc problems and neuropathy. What happens next truly separates our integrative neurology approach from anything else available to help correct lower back, hip, leg and foot problems. We have pioneered techniques to decompress nerves, but also use a number of natural substances that have been shown in recent scientific studies to help nerves re-grow and repair. There are no current drugs that can do this. But that’s not all. We combine special electrical stimulation techniques with acupuncture. A combination that has been shown to correct abnormal nerve function and promote nerve repair. There simply is no better or more comprehensive system for diagnosing and correcting the cause of spinal stenosis, neuropathy and other conditions that cause lower back, hip and leg pain and numbness. To find out how we can help you or learn more about our award winning doctor and treatments, visit our website at www.kcpv.info or if you need help now, call us at You’ll be glad you did!

Najappan Chettiar loves to make good food for good people. Luckily, as the owner of Ruchi egetarian South Indian Cuisine, he gets to do what he loves daily as the restaurant serves up healthy meals for customers who come to their Chandler location from across the alley. Chettiar explains that, for 1 years, the restaurant was located in Scottsdale. Then, it relocated to Chandler about 3 years ago. e believes that Ruchi egetarian South Indian Cuisine is one of the state’s first exclusive vegetarian vegan restaurants. “I’ve been in the restaurant business more than 30 years and Ruchi is unique because we make vegetarian dishes, vegan dishes and can cater to any food allergy,” he says. “The food can be a little spicy but it’s all good for you.” For those who aren’t vegetarian or vegan, Chettiar says that they’ll still be able to find dishes that they love, too. For example, the restaurant uses beans and lentils in place of other proteins. e adds that the recipes are “home food” to him and come from thousands of years of South Indian traditional cuisine. “Ruchi is a word meaning taste in Sanskrit ,” he adds. “We’ve been lucky to have a lot of support from the vegan and vegetarian communities locally. People come from all over the alley to eat here.” While of course he stands behind everything on the menu, Chettiar does have some recommendations, especially for those who might be new to South Indian cuisine.

For appetizers, he recommends the Iddly, which is steamed rice and lentil patties. Dosai (described as “light and low in calories crepes from rice and lentil”) is a popular choice as well. e recommends the Sada Dosai or the Masala Dosai, which is where the crepes are filled with potatoes and onions. When it comes to curries, he recommends the Paneer utter Masala, which is served with tomatoes and onions in a silky sauce. Also, the Pullavs (rice specialties served with pachadi) are popular for first timers as well. A great house specialty is Gobi Manchurian, which is cauliflower marinated in flour and saut ed with garlic, ginger, chili and soy sauce. For those who are interested in trying a bit of everything, the lunchtime buffet is popular. “The buffet is really popular, especially for people coming for their first time,” Chettiar says. “Of course, dinner time is perfect as well.” Served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the buffet is fresh and filled with the restaurant’s most requested dishes. You can order from the regular menu during those times, too. Chettiar notes that Ruchi does a lot of catering to local businesses and groups and is a family restaurant with his family helping out in the kitchen and on the floor when they can. One other unique factor is that the eatery is open on most holidays, so if you’re looking for a unique place to dine on Thanksgiving or Christmas, they’ll be ready to serve you.

Today, the practice now boasts 52 physicians, more than Chettiar says that their location in Chandler is including currently 200 employees and 20 partner offices alleywide, their only location and he’s happy to have so much support several in the West alley cities of Peoria, Avondale, from the Surprise local community, both vegetarians and nonGlendale, and Wickenburg. vegetarians alike. “We are a cancer center without walls whose services stretch into every inch of this community, offering the West alley with the best doctors, best treatment technologies and best research in the country,” Dr. Reed says. “Cancer is a disease of survivors and we want to keep it that way.”

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness of diabetes and the impact it has on millions of Americans. Locally, there are approximately 532, 00 people in Arizona with diabetes and ten percent of those are type 1 diabetes (T1D) patients. Most people have heard about type 2 diabetes, a metabolic disorder in which a person’s body still produces insulin but is unable to use it effectively. Type 1 diabetes is different. It’s an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone people need to get energy from food. T1D strikes both children and adults at any age and suddenly. Its onset has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. Though T1D’s causes are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers play a role. There is currently nothing you can do to prevent it, and at present, there is no cure. That’s the motivation and vision for DRF. A world without type 1 diabetes. DRF is the leading global organization funding T1D research. This organization has a local chapter that works hard year-round to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, treat and prevent T1D. DRF recently united forces to create the Arizona Chapter to serve the entire state and provide resources and support to all ages and stages of those living with T1D. The Arizona Chapter is now a combination of the Desert Southwest Chapter and Southern Arizona ranch with offices in Phoenix and Tucson.

Throughout the year, the Arizona Chapter holds two galas including the Promise all Gala this month, two walks, more than six outreach events, a weekend camp for kids, and participates in two national ride events. All the proceeds from these signature events go towards funding research, advocating for government support of research and new therapies, ensuring new therapies come to market, and connecting and engaging the T1D community. DRF Arizona Chapter also offers programs to help those in the community. One essential program is the DRF ag of ope. It is provided to children diagnosed with T1D within the past three months. It is filled with useful resources for both the child who has been diagnosed with T1D and their caregivers. These resources include Rufus, the bear with T1D, a blood glucose meter, a carbohydrate-counting tool, books, videos and more. “We continue to find special ways to help those with T1D in our community,” says DRF Arizona Chapter xecutive Director Paula oca- ommarito. “It’s all because of the outpouring of support from our community and generous sponsors throughout the year that DRF is able to continue to raise vital funds and educate people on what it’s like to live with this disease.” Living with T1D is a constant balancing act. People with T1D must regularly monitor their blood-sugar level, inject or continually infuse insulin through a pump, and carefully balance their insulin doses with eating and daily activities throughout the day and night.

16

azhealthandliving.com

P

R

While people with T1D rely on insulin therapy to control their blood sugar, insulin is not a cure nor does it prevent the possibility of the disease’s serious side effects. ven with intensive disease management, a significant portion of their day is still spent with high or low blood-sugar levels, placing people with T1D at risk for devastating complications such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and amputation. T1D is a serious and stressful disease to manage. Treatment options are improving all the time, and people with T1D are able to lead normal, productive and inspiring lives. DRF is driving research to improve the technology people with T1D use to monitor blood-sugar levels and deliver the proper

doses of insulin, as well as research that will ultimately deliver a cure. Today, there are approximately 1.25 million Americans living with T1D and 5 million are expected to have the disease by 2050. DRF Arizona hopes to “turn type one into type none. For more information on the DRF Arizona Chapter, its events and programs, or to donate to fund a cure, visit www.jdrf.org arizona.

“Best medical facility and staff in the Valley, hands down, in my opinion. Highly recommend them if you need help due to chronic pain.” – Nancy K. “

” – Cindy E. “I’ve been competing in strength athletics since the age of 15 and have been competing at a professional level for the last 5 years. It wasn’t until 2014 that I needed to seek treatment for a patella tendon tear that I received while competing at the Commerce World’s Strongest Man in China. I had only heard about PRP treatments and the great benefits that it could have on one’s injuries - that’s when I found Dr. Lundquist at Active Life Physical Medicine & Pain Center in Avondale, Arizona. To this day, I have received Orthovisc injections to both knees along with PRP. I have also received PRP treatments for muscle tears and other tendon tears that I’ve obtained while competing at World’s Strongest Man. I feel that without Dr. Lundquist knowledge in sports medicine and PRP that I would have had to have surgery. The PRP treatments have played a huge role in keeping me at an elite level. I have and will continue to refer other athletes for their injuries to Dr. Lundquist.” — Jerry Pritchett, 2x World Strongest Man Finalist

Recently, AfricanAmericansAgainstAlzheimer’s, an UsAgainstAlzheimer’s network, held a sold out performance of the national award-winning play, Forget Me Not, at the erberger Theater. The play takes the audience into the life of an American American family facing Alzheimer’s disease and shows the disease’s impact on relationships between family members, friends, and people in the community. The play was followed by a discussion with a panel of Alzheimer’s experts who answered questions about medical and social services available in the Phoenix area and shared how researchers are working to find ways to prevent and treat Alzheimer’s. Signs Excessive Sweating is Serious vs. Situational As women go about their daily lives at work, home and in social circles, there’s a common but hidden scourge: excessive sweating. In fact, a national survey conducted by the International Hyperhidrosis Society (IHhS)—the scholars of sweat—shows multiple millions suffer from extreme, uncomfortable, embarrassing, debilitating and emotionally devastating sweating. This type of sweating is a serious medical condition known as hyperhidrosis and nearly 367 million people of all ages struggle with it on their hands, feet, face, underarms or body. Hyperhidrosis can be devastating. While many women attempt to hide their sweating problems and suffer in silence, the impacts are often hard to cover up. Dramatic sweating in the presence of peers at work, or in extracurricular or social environments, can cause severe embarrassment, stress, anxiety and other emotional issues. Even when women are alone, hyperhidrosis often takes a heavy toll— adversely impacting one’s productivity in a myriad of ways, both personally and professionally. Women with hyperhidrosis struggle with disproportionate and random sweating that may drench clothing and footwear, damage technology tools, make exercising and playing sports impossible, promote hiding and isolation behaviors, degrade self-esteem, and even prompt bullying at work and elsewhere. The holistic effect on life—workplace, marital, social and otherwise—is thus profound. In fact, research published in Archives of Dermatological Research indicates that the majority of those with excessive sweating confirm the condition has negative impacts on their social life and well-being as well as their emotional and mental health. Given its extreme impacts, some do seek medical attention. It seems women are more proactive in their attempts to medically rectify the issue amid a Science Daily report that “females are far more likely to discuss their [hyperhidrosis] condition with a health care professional.” Lisa J Pieretti, Executive Director of IHhS, notes, “The pressures of dealing with a ‘sweating problem’ around peers can be catastrophic to self-esteem and more. Too often, people become anxious about going to work, socializing with friends, or being out in public in general. But when those with hyperhidrosis receive support, understanding and appropriate treatment, their lives can be dramatically changed.” To that point, IHhS co-founder Dr. David Pariser urges that, while hyperhidrosis is the No. 1 dermatological disease in 30 November 2017 | azhealthandliving.com

terms of negatively affecting a person's quality-of-life, it’s also No. 1 in having the most positive impact when treated. “When hyperhidrosis is caught early, a person’s life can be transformed for the better in a multitude of ways," he says. With that in mind, the first step toward providing solutions for those women who sweat excessively is to bust some common myths and misconceptions with facts from the experts at the IHhS, including these:

Myth: Sweaty people are nervous or have hygiene issues. Truth: The average person has 2 to 4 million sweat glands. Sweat is essential to human survival and serves as the body’s coolant, protecting it from overheating. People with hyperhidrosis (which causes overactive sweat glands) sweat excessively regardless of mood, weather or activity level—often producing 4 or 5 times more sweat than is considered “normal.”

Myth: If you’re sweating a lot during exercise, it means you’re out of shape. Truth: If you find yourself sweating a lot during exercise,

don’t blame it on being out of shape. Research shows that physically fit people actually sweat more and start sweating sooner during exercise that those who are less fit. Why? Because when you achieve greater physical fitness, you can exercise at a higher level, which generates more heat, which causes you to sweat more. Another factor is how acclimated you are to

your environment for instance, if you’re used to training in hot weather, your body will sweat more and sooner during exercise because it’s become effective at knowing when sweat needs to “kick in” and start cooling you down. If, however, you sweat excessively and uncontrollably (significantly more than what seems “normal” as a reaction to exercise or heat), you may actually have hyperhidrosis.

p Night sweats can be serious and they aren’t just something that affects menopausal women. According to Dr. Dee Anna Glaser, President and Founding Member of the International yperhidrosis Society as well as Professor and ice Chairman of the Department of Dermatology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, night sweats can be significant and shouldn’t be disregarded no matter your age or gender. Drenching night sweats, she says, or any changes in your pattern of sweating should to be evaluated by a physician. Medical conditions with sweating symptoms can include serious infections, cancer, low blood sugar, hormone disorders (not simply the hormonal changes of menopause), and neurologic conditions. Medications may also cause night sweats. It’s important to talk to your doctor about night sweating, especially if the night sweats are accompanied by a fever or other symptoms such as unexplained weight loss. Maybe menopause is the culprit, but certainly new night sweating should be discussed with your physician. One thing you don’t need to worry about hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). The medical condition hyperhidrosis causes excessive sweating when awake, not asleep.

p xcessive sweating can contribute to a number of other problems way beyond the realm of wetness. motional problems such as depression, anxiety, embarrassment and isolation are common. Practical problems with gripping objects and using touch-screen technology are also a frequent issue. ut did you ever consider the effects sweating could have on sunburns, wrinkles and skin cancer risk? If you sweat excessively you’ll need to reapply your sunscreen more often because, you got it, you’re sweating it off and not getting its protective benefits for nearly as long.

p

p

Contrary to popular belief, research shows that hyperhidrosis does not go away or decrease with age. In fact, in one recent I hS study, 88 percent of respondents said their excessive sweating had gotten worse or stayed the same over time. This was consistent across all the different age groups, from youngsters to older adults. The extreme level of sweat production experienced with hyperhidrosis can disrupt all aspects of a woman’s life, from workplace performance, relationships, recreational activities and self-image to overall emotional well-being. ut it doesn’t have to be this way. There are helpful resources available to help people with hyperhidrosis to not just “know sweat,” but to also achieve a more comfortable, fruitful and happier life. azhealthandliving.com |

No one, regardless of age, is immune to random bouts of memory loss. While misplaced car keys or forgetting items on your grocery list are nothing to get worked up over, many men and women over 50 do start to worry about memory lapses, especially when they start to occur with more frequency than they might have just a few years ago. ut while memory loss might be quickly associated with aging, increased forgetfulness is not an inevitable side effect of getting older, a fact that those at or approaching retirement age should find comforting. When considering the relationship between memory and aging, it's important that men and women recognize the distinction between memory lapses and dementia, as the two are not one and the same. As a person ages, his or her hippocampus, the region of the brain involved in the formation and retrieval of memories, often deteriorates. This can affect how long it takes to learn and recall information. ut just because this process is slower does not mean it's a warning sign of dementia, which is the loss of certain mental functions, including memory. Though taking longer to recall information can be frustrating, many people still retain their ability to recall information. In addition, while dementia brought on by conditions such as Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease is untreatable, there are things men and women can do to strengthen their memories and reduce their momentary lapses in memory.

video game from Posit Science designed specifically to enhance the speed and accuracy of visual processing. The volunteers showed less decline in visual processing as well as in other tests that measured concentration, memory and the ability to shift quickly between tasks, and the benefits from the training games lasted as long as seven years after training.

p Games that test the mind have long been believed to benefit the brain, though some remain skeptical about the true impact of brain games. owever, a University of Iowa study funded by the National Institute on Aging found that brain games may in fact pay numerous and long-term dividends. In the study, 81 healthy volunteers over the age of 0 were divided into four groups. One group played computerized crossword puzzles, and three other groups played a brain training a heat handii ngcom

Many working professionals recognize that each day tends to have its mundane moments. The brain can grow accustomed to these moments, which tend to be a routine part of the day. ut altering your daily routine can jar the brain awake, forcing it to focus during those times that had become mundane but now present new challenges. Something as simple as alternating driving routes to work from day to day or preparing some new, yet healthy, breakfast each morning can help the brain stay alert and sharp.

Maintaining a social life as you age is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family. ut there's another reason to continue to be socially engaged. A 2008 study spearheaded by the clinical trials administrative director at Southern California Kaiser Permanente Medical Group and published in the American ournal of Public ealth found that older women who maintained large social networks were 2 percent less likely to develop dementia than women with smaller social networks. In addition, those who had daily contact with friends and family cut their risk of dementia by nearly half. The study also noted that regular social interaction can delay or possibly even prevent cognitive impairment.

While the idea of retiring poolside and watching the world go by might seem nice, such a scenario is not necessarily good for your brain. Numerous studies have shown the benefits that staying engaged in professional activities can have on brain health. The brain does not thrive if it's sitting on the sideline. Staying active in your career will continue to provide the challenges your brain needs to stay sharp and avoid memory loss and struggles with concentration. Men and women who want to leave office life behind can branch out on their own and work as consultants or put their years of experience to use by teaching at a nearby university or secondary school.

T-coils operate by receiving and selectively converting electromagnetic energy into sound which can be heard by the hearing aid user. These sound signals (microphone or direct audio input) are projected into the environment by a loop system. This process, known as near-field induction, is widely used in many big cities across the United States and in urope. Phoenix itself has many music venues, drama theaters and movie theaters equipped with loop systems. Loop systems consist of a loop wire that goes around the listening area or on a lanyard worn by the hearing aid user. Using hearing aid t-coils in conjunction with loop systems allows hearing aid users to hear voices and music much more clearly. Some important things to remember when considering t-coils and loop systems First you need to know if you have a t-coil inside your hearing aid and how to use it. It is a good idea to also contact the venue ahead of time and inquire if they have a loop hearing system installed. Ask the venue if you will need a lanyard worn receiver. Do not hesitate to contact your audiologist if you have questions about hearing aid t-coil compatibility or if you would like to obtain a hearing aid with a t-coil.

After many years of treating whiplash injuries, I have observed something interesting in the hundreds of patients I've treated. ven though a whiplash is considered a neck injury, a significant percentage of these patients develop widespread pain throughout their body. The development of widespread pain seems to be associated with whiplash injury more so than other types of neck trauma. Recently research published in the ournal o isa ilit Re a ilitation supports this observation. What the researchers found particularly for women involved in whiplash injuries, is that almost 0 percent of these patients develop widespread pain in body parts far removed from their neck, a full 50 percent develop regional pain surrounding their neck. These and other researchers believe that the whiplash trauma can affect the brain and spinal cord and cause increased sensitivity of the nerves that carry pain signals to the brain. This is postulated to be the cause of widespread or regional pain following a local trauma to the neck. Other researchers publishing in the can inavian ournal o Pain, using a special form of MRI, found that whiplash victims suffered from abnormalities in those parts of the brain associated with pain processing. They also report that a third of whiplash patients had abnormally high levels of CRP, an inflammatory marker, in their blood. The researchers conclude that patients suffering from whiplash need special care directed at restoring normal function of their brain.

aricose veins are incompetent veins that appear under the skin and are usually blue in color. They can become enlarged due to pooling of blood. This occurs when the valves in the veins fail to keep the blood flowing in one direction that is towards the heart. This condition causes pain and swelling, night cramps, change in skin color and severe cases ulcers. Spider veins are small blue and red vessels visible within the skin, usually on legs but sometimes on face and chest. The latest technology available for vein treatment at our center is called ndovenous Laser Ablation Therapy ( LT). A laser is used in a forty-five minute procedure to close the incompetent vein. This procedure is performed at our practice under local anesthetics.

emorrhoids are the result of excessive blood flow and larger diameter vessels that feed the normal arterial anal hemorrhoidal cushions. This can result in symptoms such as bleeding, pain, discomfort, swelling and prolapse (protruding of hemorrhoid tissue). emorrhoids will occur in 50 percent of the population by the age of 50. ighty-five percent of the population will experience hemorrhoid symptoms in their lifetime. Most definitive procedures being done involve some form of excisional therapy. Today a non-excisional definitive surgical treatment is available called Trans emorrhoidal Dearterialization (T D). T D uses ultrasound to locate the hemorrhoidal arteries so that they may be ligated. The surgeon will then repair any prolapsed tissue if present, again using only suture. No tissue is cut or excised. T D is performed as an outpatient surgery and most patients will return to normal activities within four days. T D eliminates the most dreaded complications of hemorrhoid surgery such as anal stenosis and anal sphincter damage, which can lead to incontinence (loss of bowel control). Since T D is excision-less, and uses only sutures for repair, a patient’s pain is much less, recuperation is faster and healing is much quicker. Stop feeling embarrassed and stop feeling afraid. Get the procedure you need and get your life back.

do not need shoes until they are walking well, around 15 months to two years. Instead, infants and toddlers should wear socks for added protection and warmth. Their first shoes should have soft, flexible soles so that they can push off the balls of the feet correctly. Most toddlers grow an average of a half shoe size every four months until age three, and then a half shoe size every six months. Look for shoes with wide or rounded toe boxes that allow lots of room for the toes. With older children, it becomes important to have more support. The soles should have some flexibility you should be able to bend the sole a little, but not in half. Children are more likely to have wide-width feet than adults, so make sure you have their feet measured at least once a year. If your children are regularly involved in athletics, be sure they wear the correct type of shoe for their sport (soccer, basketball, softball, etc.) so they will have better foot support for the specific movements to perform each activity. e in or ation containe in t is article is not inten e to e a su stitute or ro essional e ical a vice iagnosis care or treat ent. although an interesting study was done in Sweden in the mid-1 0s. The results, published in the Archives of erontolog an eriatrics were significant. Restless sleep, frequent awakening, difficulty getting to sleep again after waking up in the night, as well as tiredness at night, but with inability to get to sleep was found to be more common in both sexes if either parent had difficulty sleeping. Further, these problems were more common in respondents whose parents both had difficulty sleeping. Immediate relatives of patients with narcolepsy, hypersomnia, and insomnia have been found to have a higher frequency of these disorders as well. In other related research, no differences in lifestyle or sleeping conditions could be found in elderly patients who complained of sleep problems. This led the researchers of the Sweden study to suggest that heredity factors may be the answer. While we always have to take into account that surveys such as this one are not without fault (one has to allow for human error), the results of this research are intriguing. A. Your dentist will discuss your treatment options with you during your consultation. After it has been determined that you are a good candidate for Invisalign, he or she will create a 3-D image of your mouth using photos, impressions and x-rays. The dentist will then map out the route your teeth will take to their new, ideal position. ach aligner tray marks a new phase of this transition and is worn for roughly two weeks.

Invisalign aligners should be worn for most of the day, 20 to 22 hours, throughout your treatment. Overall treatment times vary depending upon the severity of your orthodontic condition. There are no diet restrictions with Invisalign because you can take the aligner trays out before eating. In fact, not only does this method make eating more enjoyable, it makes maintenance easier, too. When you need to brush or floss your teeth, you simply take out the aligner tray. Invisalign requires fewer visits to the dentist. While you will change your aligner tray every two weeks, you will only visit your cosmetic dentist every six weeks. Unlike metal braces, most people will not notice that you are wearing the aligner trays. They are nearly undetectable and completely removable. This is advantageous for times when you want to look your best, such as important events, meetings, or when taking photographs.

for more than 2,000 years in China. In the United States, it became popular during the 1 0s, and has become much more common and accessible during the last decade. In Arizona, the practice of veterinary acupuncture is restricted to licensed veterinarians. The lack of research explaining how acupuncture works can make some Westerntrained veterinarians initially hesitant. While there is a growing body of evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of acupuncture for pain and musculoskeletal injuries, there is not much published evidence to support its use for other conditions. owever, trained practitioners usually find their patients improving after acupuncture therapy, and most animals tolerate it extremely well. Although they may be nervous at first, acupuncture typically promotes a calming response. Combining astern and Western medicine gives us better results for our patients than either one alone, and, when our patients feel better, we feel better.

The use of plants as medicine is one of the only forms of healing that’s embraced by every culture and ethnicity, and has endured since ancient times and is still in use today in many areas of the world. What makes this all the more intriguing is that how and why plants work is still a mystery. Modern science cannot fully explain the healing nature of plants. In the late 1800s, upwards of 0 percent of the population knew how to use the medicinal plants growing in their backyards to treat common illnesses and injuries they had to, as this was virtually the only medicine’ available.

With the rise of what is now known as conventional medicine, shortly before World War One, herbalism slowly fell out of favor and became to be thought of as folk medicine. Rather than viewing nature as the source of healing, as had been done for centuries, people began to view drugs and other modern’ healing methods as superior. The U.S. spends more on health care than any other industrialized nation, while at the same time experiencing increasing rates of chronic disease. It has perhaps never been more evident that our disconnectedness from nature isn’t working.

There are great differences between the two and understanding those differences will help you make the right decision concerning your health care. To help explain, let’s start with the basics. Medicare is provided in two ways directly by the federal government or by private insurance companies who have been approved by the federal government. If you receive Medicare Parts A and directly from the government, it’s referred to as “Original” or “Traditional” Medicare. Under Original Medicare, you’ll receive services by those who “accept” Medicare. When services are rendered, your Medicare card is presented and the federal government pays for those services on a fee-for-service basis. owever, Original Medicare has deductibles and coinsurance costs that the beneficiary is responsible for paying. When purchased, a Medicare Supplement (also known as Medigap) will reduce or eliminate the out-of-pocket costs associated with Original Medicare. A Medicare Supplement will always be the second payer to Medicare. If your hospital and medical services are provided by a private insurance company, it is referred to as a Medicare Advantage plan. Many Advantage plans in Arizona require no monthly premium and have no deductibles to satisfy. Most plans include prescription drug coverage at no additional cost. ach plan determines co-pays and co-insurance amounts. And most Advantage plans require their members to receive services from a network of contracted doctors. motions run deep come the holiday season. oliday planning can be hectic, especially for blended families. Today's families are increasingly blended, meaning they're a combination of families due to divorce or death. ven though the holidays are meant to be joyous, navigating traditions and accommodating the unique needs of all involved - including cultural traditions, visitation schedules, rituals and religious beliefs - can be challenging. ut blended families need not fret as they attempt to negotiate Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa or New Years.

The first step to holiday planning is to keep in mind predetermined custody or visitation agreements. Although there can be hope for holiday flexibility and generosity, try to stick as close to existing arrangements as possible. Some families choose to divvy up particular holidays throughout the year in advance. Others may do it as plans get arranged. As long as the arrangement is fair to everyone, the choice is up to the families. The plans should be made known to all involved.

p The Stepfamily Association of America says that communication during the holiday season is vital, especially for children so they know what to expect. Writing down specific itineraries can help alleviate the stress of not knowing where they will be at a given time.

traditions that have been part of celebrations for years can contribute to feelings of anxiety for people accustomed to these annual traditions. Draw the focus away from how things used to be done and create new traditions that all can anticipate. ost a holiday movie night if this isn't the year to have the kids for Christmas. An annual outing to see a concert or show might be a new tradition the entire blended family can enjoy.

All members of the family should vocalize how they feel about particular aspects of the holidays so that no one is disgruntled. Do not expect others to be mind readers. Perhaps one person is focusing a significant amount of energy on trimming the tree when that isn't as important to others. Discussing expectations can make planning that much easier.

Putting too much emphasis on trying to make the holidays perfect can backfire. lended families must recognize that holiday celebrations will change. It can take time to find a new celebratory rhythm, and comparisons always will be made. It's acceptable to have mixed feelings about new traditions, but each member should go into the season with a positive attitude.

The holidays without everyone under the same roof enjoying

lended families may face additional challenges during the holidays. Working together, such families can restore joy to the season and create new traditions.

Dining out at restaurants can be an enjoyable activity and a break from kitchen duties at home. owever, parents of young children may avoid restaurants because of apprehension about the experience. Getting ready for the restaurant excursion can help families avoid some of the common pitfalls. Patience and planning can help dining out with the family go smoothly.

New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a baby sitter is unavailable or if you're not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible. First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby's feeding and sleeping schedule. abies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. ust in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breast-feed to keep your baby happy.

Active children can learn table manners and restaurant behavior early on through practice. These lessons can open children up to new food experiences and help them grow accustomed to social settings. Do not set your child up to fail by selecting a restaurant that is too fancy or quiet. Save those restaurants for when your company is adults only. A place that is used to noise (and moderate mess) is better. A restaurant that has interesting decor, such as an aquarium, can keep toddlers occupied. ut bring along some games, toys and other trinkets to keep their attention. Try playing games, such as counting the packets of sugar or finding people wearing red shirts. Avoid dining out with a tired child, and be prompt in selecting meals and eating. This is not a time to linger, as youngsters' attention spans and willingness to sit still tend to be minimal. e prepared to leave with a to-go box if a child proves unruly. azhealthandliving.com |

Diet and exercise go hand in hand, but diets are often associated with women while exercise regimens tend to be geared toward men. ut exercise is just as important for women as it is for men, which is why women must find the right balance between diet and exercise to achieve their weight-loss goals.

Cardiovascular exercise is important, but women need more iron in their weight-loss regimens, specifically the type of iron found on the weight bench. According to the National Center for ealth Statistics, roughly 21 percent of women strength train two or more times a week. Skipping strength-training exercises eliminates one of the fastest ways to see measurable weight loss. Two sessions per week of strength-training exercises can reduce overall body fat by around 3 percent in as little as 10 weeks. Such exercises can trim inches off your hips and waist, even if you aren't cutting calories from your diet. Muscle also helps burn calories even when you're not working out. A study in e ournal o trengt an on itioning Researc found that women who completed an hour-long workout that included strength training burned an extra 100 calories in the 2 hours following a workout than they in the 2 hours after a workout that did not include strength training. This post-workout calorie burn is commonly referred to as afterburn, and it increases exponentially when women lift more weight for less repetitions instead of lifting lighter weight for more repetitions.

It may be easy to find a problem area on your body and target that area with certain exercises (think crunches for belly fat). ut this is not the best course of action. It's better to work an array of muscles in an exercise session rather than focusing on one particular area. The following exercises can help women build lean muscle and stimulate the afterburn of a good workout.

p Pushups are the bane to many a woman's existence. owever, pushups and stationary pushups, called plank exercises, fire up core muscles in the back and stomach. They also promote shoulder and arm strength, eliminating the need for bicep curls and other arm exercises. If pushups are a heat handii ngcom

difficult for you, start out on your knees and work up to doing pushups on your toes. As you build strength, you will find it easier to do pushups and notice your arms have added muscle and tone. Lunges and squats target some of the largest muscles in your body, which are found in the legs and backside gluteus muscles. Lunges will also work the adductors and abductors of your inner and outer thighs. Not only do these exercises promote strength training in major muscle groups, they require balance provided by engaging core muscles in the abdomen. Your heart rate will increase when these larger muscles are being used at the same time, which means you're getting a cardiovascular workout at the same time as you strength train. Instead of spending 30 minutes on the elliptical machine at the gym, use a rowing machine. In addition to the cardiovascular benefits that rowing provides, you will be working the muscles of the arms, back, shoulders, legs and abdomen while you row. Rowing machines work more of the body than more traditional cardiovascular machines. y including strength-training exercises in a workout and choosing activities that work the maximum number of muscle groups at the same time, women will see a more profound weight loss in a shorter period.

Many people are aware of the importance of including fiber in the diet, but few people understand the importance of dietary fiber. Fiber is an essentially indigestible substance that is found mainly in the outer layers of plants. Fiber will pass through the human digestive system virtually unchanged from when it was consumed and without being broken down into nutrients. Fiber is classified into two types insoluble fiber, which will not dissolve in water, and soluble fiber, which can be dissolved. Insoluble fiber is typically found in whole grain products, dark leafy vegetables, green beans, wheat bran, corn bran, seeds, nuts, and skins of fruits and vegetables. Soluble fiber comes from foods like oats, nuts, fruits and dried beans. Fiber adds bulk in the digestive system, which helps soften stool and flush out the intestines. It assists in making bowel movements more frequent, preventing constipation. While fiber is often associated with improving regularity, that is not its only role. Fiber, particularly soluble fiber that can be slowly digested will prolong the digestive process, helping to keep the stomach fuller longer. Feeling full can help a person eat healthy portions. Fiber-rich foods are also less calorie-dense. This means you can eat more and feel fuller without consuming tons of calories. Increasing fiber consumption may help men and women looking to lose weight. The slow absorption of carbohydrates also regulates the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream. This can prevent sugar spikes that may be dangerous to those with diabetes. It also may be able to help reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, according to a study published in the New ngland ournal of Medicine in May 2000. Soluble fiber has been shown to help lower blood cholesterol concentrations by decreasing the absorption of cholesterol and bile acids in the small intestines. When less bile acid is absorbed, the body must use stored cholesterol to make more, lowering blood cholesterol as a result. azhealthandliving.com |

Last year, she impressed critics in her role in “Lion,” and, according to multiple sources, she has many projects in the works for 2018. Some of these include an animated film called “The Guardian rothers,” a role in “Aquaman,” and a re-make of “The Intouchables.” “There's the thing about Nicole Kidman she takes risks. Sometimes those risks pay off, sometimes they don't, but it's rare for a major A-list movie star to go places that might scare other actresses as often as she does. And it's been that way from the start,” cites an article in W magazine. “From playing a seductive villain in To Die For’ to her vanity-free portrayal of irginia Woolf, which got her an Academy Award, to even more recent work like The Paper oy,’ irth,’ Rabbit’ and Sofia Coppola's excellent The eguiled,’ Kidman gravitates to parts that challenge her, and there's something very refreshing and brave about that, which makes her a compelling presence on screen.” “This year alone has been a banner one for the actress, who was the unequivocal queen of the Cannes Film Festival, where four of her projects a heat handii ngcom

premiered,” continues the W magazine article. “ ut her biggest success, the one that penetrated her the most and connected on an almost visceral level with audiences was her performance as Celeste in O's mammoth hit ig Little Lies,’ which she brought to the screen with Reese Witherspoon because she and her peer group weren't getting the parts they deserved.” In “ ig Little Lies,” Kidman plays the victim of domestic violence who eventually leaves the situation and finds peace. She won an mmy for the role and has been in the news for speaking out against domestic violence. Kidman is known for making time for charity and bringing awareness to causes that she’s passionate about especially causes that impact women. It never occurred to me that I should be at a disadvantage because I was born a girl...The idea that women and men are equal is part of my DNA. I was raised by a strong feminist mother and a fully supportive father, she writes in an essay for Porter magazine. It is in this role that I come to fully understand the barriers that women around the world are facing. I have focused on lending my voice to women who are survivors of violence. The stories I have heard from them have shaken me to the core and changed me forever...More than ever, I am aware of the need to support and celebrate each other,” she continues. Kidman has been a Goodwill Ambassador for UNIC F for more than a decade and is a spokesperson for UNIF M. She has also partnered with a variety of nonprofits to bring awareness to multiple issues over the years, including family violence and Sydney Children’s ospital. Thanks in part to her company lossom Films, this year, she was named in the Top 10 Most Culturally Powerful People by Australian Financial Review Magazine. “(She's) optioning books for film and T series to be made by her production company lossom Films, retaining Australian writers... Supporting edgier filmmakers and creating the roles for women that she wished had existed at the start of her own career,” according to Australian Financial Review Magazine. In addition to her impactful career and charity work, Kidman has four children and has been married to country superstar Keith Urban for years. p Caregivers are unpaid individuals, typically a spouse, child, neighbor or friend, who assist with activities of daily living and medical tasks. These informal caregivers often fill in gaps between medical professionals or paid aides to meet the needs of incapacitated individuals. The National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP indicate that approximately 3.5 million caregivers have provided unpaid care to an adult or child in the last 12 months. Roughly 15. million adult family caregivers in the United States care for someone who has Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia, states the Alzheimer's Association. Though both men and women serve as caregivers, females are the largest segment of unpaid caregivers, handling some of the most difficult tasks, such as bathing and dressing. Many caregivers selflessly give back by providing assistance to a friend or family member, and view this type of service as a form of charitable giving. Others see it as simply being a good friend or family member. Although it can be rewarding to care for another person, caregiving also can be a stressful job that takes both a physical and emotional toll on caregivers. Caregiver stress is a very real side effect. It is important for caregivers to recognize that offering medical care and support can leave them vulnerable to a wide range of consequences. These can include anxiety, depression, fatigue, and even increased exposure to illness. It can be particularly sad to witness a loved one's health gradually deteriorate. The Office on Women's ealth says that anyone is susceptible to caregiver stress, but more women caregivers say they have stress and other health problems than male caregivers. Women who are caregivers of spouses are more likely to experience high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes than men. Depression is quite common among caregivers who spend a lot of time assisting those with various dementias because of the constant care such people require. To remain as healthy as possible, caregivers should take steps to recognize symptoms of caregiver stress and avoid burnout. ere are some signs to keep in mind Feelings of being overwhelmed Feeling alone or deserted by others | a heat handii ngcom

Social withdrawal from friends or activities that used to make you feel good xhaustion that makes it challenging to complete necessary tasks Sleeplessness or sleeping more than normal Lack of concentration that impacts daily tasks Overreaction to minor nuisances Cutting back on leisure activities Neglecting things at home or other people who are well An immune system that is run down, leading to constant illness The Alzheimer's Association says it is important for caregivers to find time for themselves apart from caregiving tasks. Respite care or relying on others to fill in can free up time for a caregiver to relax and recharge. It is also important to prevent caregiving from becoming a person's whole existence. Investing time in other things that provide meaning and purpose can help caregivers find balance. Also, focusing on the things that can be controlled and small victories can make a difference.

Seniors an ive Sa el S ccess ll

Seniors' eagerness to give makes them prime targets for charity fraud. Giving in retirement while avoiding fraudsters is challenging, but seniors who recognize their vulnerability can reduce their risk of falling victim to criminals. To ensure a donation will be spent in the way it was intended, seniors should thoroughly research organizations before becoming donors. One of the first places to start is Charity Navigator. A 501(c)(3) public charity, Charity Navigator has been steering the public in the right direction regarding charities since 2001. Their analysts research thousands of financial documents, rating charities on accountability, transparency and performance, among other criteria. Individuals also can research charities by getting recommendations from friends and family, as well as learning about organizations through the etter usiness ureau. Online rankings and scam alerts can help with decisionmaking as well. igh-quality charities do not need to p resort to pressure tactics to solicit funds. Similarly, individuals should not feel put upon to donate because of gifts received in the mail. Such gifts commonly include note pads and return address labels. Seniors should make donations based on how they feel about a particular charity and the difference they want to make. Some fraudulent charities like to piggyback on the success of reputable organizations. They may operate under names that sound similar to legitimate charities or create business logos that are nearly identical. People should not be fooled by these tactics.

p Donating to one charity should not result in a deluge of solicitations from others. Individuals should tell a charity they do not want their personal information shared. This also helps to reduce the risk of being contacted by bogus charities.
