TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made : marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” ~ Psalm 139:14 Welcome to our Holiday issue. As we approach the end of another year, let us be grateful for all the blessings that surround us. Forget about the “what if,” “could have had” or “could have been”. God knows where He is taking us every step of the way – all we have to do is follow. This upcoming year, try something new—stop making “resolutions” and instead give “restitution” to God, praise and thank Him in advance for all the blessings coming your way. The world around us is constantly changing and although we have to submit to change to produce desired results, we can still hold grounded to what we know is right by God. Yes, we may improve in efficiency with new technology and expand our vision about what is to come, but in the process, we must not lose our values and traditions to teach our children, grandchildren and their children’s grandchildren (our future generation) — how to live healthier lives! Healthier Lives: The condition of being sound in body, mind —And Spirit! With this said, I want to take the time to thank God, you – our readers, our advertisers, contributors and our team, who I see as partners and as family, supporting our mission for a healthier Arizona. “O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it 12

altogether. Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high , I cannot attain unto it.” ~ Psalm 139: 1-7 O Come All Ye Faithful Joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem. Come and behold Him, Born the King of Angels; O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord. O Sing, choirs of angels, Sing in exultation, Sing all that hear in heaven God's holy word. Give to our Father glory in the Highest; O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord. All Hail! Lord, we greet Thee, Born this happy morning, O Jesus! for evermore be Thy name adored. Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing; O come, let us adore Him,O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord. Until next time,

Wishing you and your family blessed Holidays,God Bless You!

Health Insurance Express Helps Navigate the Affordable Care Act

W

ith the Affordable Care Act’s unveiling of the health insurance marketplace in October, many valley residents are questioning how they will be affected by the major health changes and mandates. Residents are scrambling to make the deadline of December 15, to purchase healthcare for plans beginning January 1, 2014. Rest assured, Health Insurance Express, Inc., launched its company with the sole purpose of helping valley residents and businesses navigate the Affordable Care Act. The Affordable Care Act mandates that every U.S. citizen must have health insurance coverage by March 1, 2014. The Health Insurance Marketplace, which includes all of the public plans mandated by the Affordable Care Act, became active on October 1. Health Insurance Express is designed to help all individuals and business owners become savvy health care shoppers and to take control of their health through transparency and education. The President of Health Insurance Express, Alan Leafman, a 27-year health insurance veteran, expects there will be

a continued flood of questions regarding the Affordable Care Act as the deadline for purchasing health care quickly approaches. He is aware that there is possibly more confusion about selecting a health insurance plan. He urges Valley residents to become educated and consult a professional broker about the different plans before making a health insurance purchase. “We want to simplify the process of shopping for healthcare and help people not only understand the changes, but also choose a plan that is truly best for them,” Leafman says. “There are five different types of plans available on the Marketplace, with monthly rates for single coverage starting from $200 to $400 depending on your age, but it isn’t as cut and dry as it may seem. It is important to find a plan that is right for you, including what your health needs are, what your income is, what subsidies may be available to you, and how diligent you are when it comes to your preventative healthcare. If you are eligible for a subsidy, your rate could be half or less the actual charge.” Health Insurance Express is a valley health insurance ‘superstore’ that sells more than 100 different types of health insurance plans from the nation’s leading insurance carriers.

South American Tapir Found throughout the Amazonian rainforest is the South American tapir. A distant cousin to the horse and rhinoceros, due to the odd number of toes on their rear feet. The tapir has a distinctive prehensile snout used to forage for plants and leaves in and around sources of water. There are three subspecies of tapir found in South America and one from Asia. Each species is listed as threatened due to poaching and habitat loss. The striking white stripes and spots that serve as camouflage on newborn tapirs will eventually fade as they grow to nearly full size. Adults mature into a uniform dark brown and use their comfort in water to help avoid predators such as jaguars. HEART OF THE COMMUNITY

SUPPORT LOCAL

By Lori Romano

Community Bridges, Inc.

Providing Quality Mental Health Services “It’s no secret that millions of Americans struggle with mental health issues. Nearly one in four adults will be affected by a mental illness at some point in their lives,” Frank Scarpati says, President and CEO of Community Bridges Inc. CBI is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for everyone in the communities they serve. Since 1982, Scarpati and his team at CBI have made it their mission to provide hope to adults struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues. CBI has more than 28 programs offered in 14 cities and towns throughout Ariz. CBI has the capacity to provide a wealth of clinical programs, homeless outreach, support for women and children, supportive housing and prevention programs to more than 55,000 individuals each year. What sets CBI apart from other programs is the focus on recovery through whole health. Instead of just providing front-line substance abuse or mental health treatment, the CBI team addresses the overall health of individuals, which is much more effective in helping them achieve long-term success in their recoveries. “For far too long, a disconnected system of care has resulted in disengaged patients who were far less likely to get help, stay involved and be well long-term,” Scarpati

16

December 2013 | azhealthandliving.com

says. “Our focus on complete wellness is saving lives and has become a driving force for fundamental change, not only in Arizona but nationwide.” In addition to providing high quality substance abuse and mental health treatment through lifesaving interventions, CBI is also an invaluable resource to the community as a whole. Outreach efforts and ongoing initiatives provide education to Ariz. youth, parents, educators and families about drug and alcohol abuse, prevention and healthy alternatives. Many community leaders, hospitals, physicians and public safety officials look to CBI for help on strengthening their efforts as well.

Serving more than 25,000 youth and adults each year, the CBI Prevention and Community Education programs offer hundreds of workshops. Topics include suicide prevention, emerging drug trends, local resource information and signs/symptoms of drug use. In addition, programs like Next Step and Circle of Hope lend additional support to youth and families. Next Step provides a six-week education and diversion program for youth who have been suspended from school for drugs or alcohol. Circle of Hope provides support for families living in homeless and transitional shelters. CBI also offers 24/7 Access Point and Transition Point behavioral health facilities, which are located in both the East and West Valleys. These facilities are designed to provide access to triage, assessments, interventions, shortterm residential services, inpatient treatment, crisis services, and even routine behavioral health care any time of the day or night. The goal? To make sure that all people in need of mental health services are able to find access to quality care and prevent them from falling through the cracks.

“We are the front door of the behavioral and mental health system here in Arizona,” Scarpati explains. “To keep our communities safe, healthy and secure, we must continually strive to educate, inspire and assist citizens, law enforcement, community leaders and others through ongoing communication, involvement and personal connections.” Behavioral and mental health challenges will continue to affect thousands in Ariz. each year. However, the good news is – there is hope. CBI will be there, continuing to promote the message that recovery works and recovery is possible, while providing the tools and support people need to change the course of their lives.

INSPIRATIONAL HOMETOWN DOCS

NEVER LOSE FAITH

By Lori Romano

A Clearer Vision

S

Dr. Gerald Walman keeps life in focus

ome of Dr. Gerald Walman’s fondest childhood memories are the routine visits to the family eye doctor in his hometown of Toronto. “I was fascinated with all the neat toys that were in his office,” Dr. Walman recalls. “I remember how gentle and happy he was. He really seemed to enjoy his work.” Combining a keen interest in technology with his growing fascination for the eye care field, Dr. Walman entered medical school and realized how modern eye technology could perfect and preserve eyesight. He was accepted into an Ophthalmology program in Toronto, going on to specialize in ophthalmic surgery. “As physicians, we make choices in our training to either be a doctor that knows a little about everything, or one that knows everything about one thing. My comfort level has always been the latter,” Walman says. “Eye surgery gives me the unique opportunity to bring better vision to my patients with an extremely high percentage success rate. My staff and I never tire of the excited responses of our patients the day after their cataract surgeries or Lasik procedures. We get to brighten their worlds!” “Eye care is critically important to maximize our trip through life,” Dr. Walman says. “We have technologies to pick up various diseases in their early stages, but routine eye exams are still important, even in the absence of obvious vision problems.” With a flair for personalized care, the Walman Eye Centers’ staff also uses some of the newest and most sophisticated technologies not always found in other practices. “Since my background is mostly in Canada, I was fortunate enough to gain experience in Laser Vision Correction using advanced technologies not yet available in the U.S. because they had not yet gained FDA approval,” Walman explains. “When these technologies were approved by the FDA, I’d already gained a huge amount of experience, and have brought these technologies to my patients in Arizona.” These technologies include Intacs for Keratoconus, Lasik, specialized multifocal implants, Toric implants, Laser Eyelid Blepharoplasty and Refractive Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery. In addition, Dr. Walman has contributed his own technological advances that have since become popular treatments in his practice and around the world. “Early in my career, I had an interest in designing a novel style of an intraocular lens implant that functioned better to restore vision after cataract surgery,” Dr. Walman says. “I designed an implant that fit well because of the flexibility 20 December 2013 | azhealthandliving.com

Dr. Walman

my design gave to the implant. I obtained a patent and worked with an established company to manufacture and distribute the design throughout the world, which gave me a unique opportunity to travel the globe and teach my fellow eye surgeons.” While his vision may be for better eye care on a global scale, Dr. Walman has not lost sight of the importance of serving the individuals in his own community. He has built Walman Eye Center into the kind of place he remembers from his childhood — a comfortable office where every patient is treated as an individual. “I hear about patient experiences elsewhere where they are treated like a number in an assembly line,” Dr. Walman says. “I consider our eyes too important; I enjoy getting up in the morning to go into the office or surgery center. I am fulfilled by the smiles from patients whose lives have been enhanced by our personalized and meticulous attention to their eyes.” Walman Eye Centers can now be found at three locations, Downtown Phoenix, the West Valley and Wickenburg. Dr. Walman and his colleagues, Dr. Anuradha Parturi and Mr. Christopher Marmo, are dedicated to providing quality eye care to folks throughout Ariz.

PREVENT

Knowledge

Important in the Fight Against

A

HIV/AIDS

ccording to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 25 million people have died from AIDS since the onset of the epidemic roughly 30 years ago.

Arizona Department of Health Services stats from 2011, estimate 11,000 people with HIV/AIDS living in the State of Ariz. According to the National Center for Disease Control, approximately 25 percent of those living with HIV do not know they have it. In Ariz., those numbers would equate to 4680 people that have not been diagnosed. Though great strides have been made concerning diagnosing and treating HIV/AIDS, many feel there is still a significant way to go before this deadly disease can be defeated finally. One of best ways to help in the fight against HIV/AIDS is to understand the disease. Knowledge can lead to prevention, which is more effective and grows a greater appreciation of what those battling the disease are facing every day.

What is HIV? HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. A virus that infects destroys and impairs the function of the immune system cells. Once a person is infected, the virus works to deteriorate the body's immune system, making it difficult for the body to fight infection and disease. The infections that result are known as "opportunistic infections," as they take advantage of an infected person's weakened immune system.

What is AIDS? AIDS also known as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, is used to describe the most advanced stages of HIV infection. When a person has AIDS, he or she is fighting any of more than 20 opportunistic infections or HIVrelated cancers.

How is HIV transmitted? The WHO notes that HIV can be transmitted in a number of ways. At the onset of the epidemic, HIV was 24

December 2013 | azhealthandliving.com

thought to be transmitted only through sexual intercourse, including oral sex, there are a number of additional ways the disease can be transmitted, including: • Transfusion of contaminated blood • Sharing of contaminated needles, syringes or other sharp instruments • Childbirth & Breast-feeding • Between a mother and baby during pregnancy

Who is most at risk of getting HIV Though no one is immune to HIV, some are at greater risk of HIV than others are. These people include: • Injection drug users who share needles • Infants born to mothers with HIV who did not receive HIV therapy during the pregnancy • Sexually active people who engage in unprotected sex, especially with partners who have additional high-risk behaviors and are HIV positive or have AIDS • Those who received blood transfusions or clotting products between 1977 and 1985, before screening for the HIV virus became standard practice

How long does it take before AIDS develops Once infected with HIV, those infected often want to know-how quickly AIDS will develop. That varies depending on the individual. If untreated, those infected with HIV will develop symptoms of HIV related illness within five to 10 years. However, the time between an HIV infection and an AIDS diagnosis can be over a decade.

Are there symptoms of HIV There are symptoms of HIV, but many people do not develop any symptoms upon being infected. However, within several days or weeks of exposure to HIV, some do experience a flu-like illness characterized by fever, headache, fatigue and enlarged lymph glands in the neck. Upon infection, symptoms might not appear or be very slow to develop, a period that can last as long as a decade. Though no symptoms appear, the virus will continue to multiply, infect and kill cells of the immune system. The virus can gradually kill CD4+ or T4 cells, which are the immune system's primary infection fighters. Once the immune system has been weakened, then the following symptoms might develop: • Persistent skin rashes or flaky skin • Short-term memory loss • Mouth, genital or anal sores resulting from herpes infections

• Persistent or frequent yeast infection • Frequent fevers and sweats • Weight loss • Lack of energy

If AIDS has developed, the affected might begin to experience cough and shortness of breath, seizures and lack of coordination, difficulty swallowing, forgetfulness, fever, vision loss, weight loss, and extreme fatigue. azhealthandliving.com |December 2013

How to Hone Your Intuition

ne key component of birthing one’s own dream life is harnessing your intuitive power. This ability to distinguish between ego-driven wants and higher self-wisdom is crucial so that you are making choices in alignment with your personal integrity. So, just how does one accomplish that? Here are a few suggestions.

identify what is driving us in each moment. Intuition is the awareness and acknowledgement of being connected to life deeply and meaningfully. The ego is a self-advocating force that caters to external standards and often gets in the way of higher self-awareness. Learning to recognize the differences between these two voices is a profound way to create more ease and lessen suffering.

Ego is not bad or wrong, but we do need to be able to distinguish its voice from that of our intuition. The ego is a necessary part of our self that

Recognize when ego and intuition are pulling you in different directions. The ego is a perpetually

hungry creature, never satisfied, whereas higher intuition has a contented nature that aligns with your personal integrity. Wisdom’s signals are palpable, but we have become so masterful at ignoring them that we do not recognize them when they occur. Both the ego’s plea and intuition’s nudging can be sensed in one’s body as distinctive body sensations. Listen inwardly for these sensations, for example, when someone is trying to sell you something questionable.

Be available for those intuitive moments in which you can witness yourself, objectively, on every level. Intuitive power gives us a profound ability to see

ourselves from a bird’s eye view on every level – sensually, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. These intuitive moments do not have to be random; you can cultivate your mind to be more on the lookout for sensations that are taking place in your body in each moment and especially in situations that require you to make a difficult decision or choice. Be aware of your body as it goes through its daily activities and at the same time, consider all levels of yourself when doing so. This higher awareness enables you to have all aspects of yourself peacefully coexist and work together for a more whole and happy life.

Five Ways to Stay Positive During the Holidays By Nassim Sana, counselor and certified life coach

For most, the holidays are the most important and engaging part of the year. As much as you look forward to them, you also tend to stress out this time of the year. Here are a few tips that will help you stay more positive during the holidays. Create your day, every morning. Take a few minutes to say to yourself what you are grateful for – smell the coffee, enjoy the sunrise and be open to the possibilities that you can create. Visualize how productive you want your day to be. Visualize and do not allow the little things to bring you down. Remember that mistakes happen – do not dwell on them. Recognize your mistakes and make more choices that are positive next time. At midday, check in with yourself. Make sure you are on track. The key is to have more balance in your day. Do not neglect self-care. At lunchtime eat and at break time take a break. Change the negative into the positive. If someone is bringing you down, remind yourself about the positive aspects of your day. There is always a positive aspect. Choose to live a life in action. The key is not to attach to the outcome and remember everything will turn out perfectly. Create a space of new possibilities for yourself. At the end of your day, check back in with yourself. Conduct a mini evaluation on productivity, staying on track, creating balance, not dwelling and giving gratitude. azhealthandliving.com |December 2013

MIND & BODY

FIND BALANCE

By Kim Obert of DrugFreeAz.org

Guide to Being a Good Role Model Set a good example during the holidays. With children being on winter break and away from school, it is important for parents to remember the influence their actions have on them.

T

he holidays can provide happiness and excitement as friends and family come together for celebration. While this is true for parents, the stress that comes with holiday parties, gift buying and time constraints can lead to poor decision-making that ultimately may impact the whole family. Whether you are planning or participating in a holiday gathering with friends or families, it is important to remember that your children are watching your every move and being a good role model is important. So, where do you start? First, make it a priority to talk with your kids about making healthy decisions. With freedom from homework and school responsibilities, kids find themselves with nothing to do. Unfortunately, this is when drugs and alcohol may surface, making it a crucial time for parents to initiate that conversation. As a parent, you are your child’s first role model. While talking with your children about healthy decisions around the holidays, your actions need to speak louder than your words. Here are a few tips to make sure your actions are loud and clear.

Just because the kids are on vacation does not mean it is time to relax on the rules. Store alcohol in

a safe place, keep an eye out for signs of drug use and drinking and remind your children of the consequences.

Do not drink excessively at holiday parties. If you

are hosting a party or family get-together, make sure that your guests have arranged for a sober driver and 28

December 2013 | azhealthandliving.com

that plenty of non-alcoholic refreshments are available.

Show your teen that holidays are about more than parties and gifts. Teach them that holidays are a time for being thankful and being surrounded by family.

Teens follow actions over words, so parents should also be aware of what they are showing and teaching their teens. The holidays are a good time to start healthy eating and good exercise habits, as a family. Go on hikes as a family, the weather is perfect for outdoor activities this time of year. Guiding your children to make healthy decisions around the holidays is certainly not the only thing parents need to remember to do. Parents should also be talking their teens about the rules and expectations to ensure there is no confusion. • Offer to host non-alcohol and drug-free gatherings. • When your teen is going to a party, call and ask who will be supervising and if alcohol will be served. If you are hosting the party, welcome calls from other parents to discuss the event. • Talk to your child about not using drugs or alcohol and how underage use can affect their health, future plans, relationships and safety. • Make it very clear you do not want your child to do drugs or drink alcohol and share what the consequences will be. Holidays are a time for celebrations and fun. Do not let this holiday end up in hardship.

How to Avoid Even One Alcoholic Drink By MS

Just one drink of alcohol can impair the senses to a degree and one seems to lead too easily to more. The trick for pulling off abstinence when others are drinking is to be resolute from the start by bringing or ordering, a tasty alternative. Here are a few pointers on how to turn down a drink effectively. Pour your own drinks. If anyone tries to persuade you differently, decline gracefully and simply resume the conversation. Enjoy the setting as much as everyone else does. Some will be drinking, some will not and no one needs to judge anyone else. If the party gets too rowdy for you, just leave quietly. If peer pressure persists, use a few deterrent tricks: * State a reason that no one can dispute, like health or driving. * Keep your non-alcohol drink topped up to avoid offers from a helpful host. * At a bar, order your beverage with lime, olives, cherries and a stir-stick to look like a mixed drink. * If someone puts a drink in your hand, accept it but do not drink it; find a way to discard it discreetly. * Ahead of time, tell the bartender your drink-of-choice and to omit the alcohol if anyone buys you something different. * Offer to be the designated driver. This keeps you resolute and keeps your friends from pressuring you. * If partying, recognize your responsibilities, even alcohol free. Use a buddy system to watch out for each other and remember: If you are present in an unlawful situation, you may be in just as much trouble as the heavy drinkers. azhealthandliving.com |December 2013

expert talk

Q. I have a parent with glaucoma; if my vision seems okay , do I have to worry about glaucoma? A. Glaucoma has traditionally been known as the “thief that takes your vision in the night”. The disease damages delicate nerve fibers around the optic nerve when the pressure in the eye is too high. This elevation of pressure is, in the majority of afflicted individuals, not something that produces symptoms in its early stages. If left untreated for a long enough period of time, compression of nerve fibers in the retina leads to loss of areas of visual field. In general, when this loss progresses to the point of being noticeable, we have already lost the battle to preserve sight and we can only treat with medications, laser or surgery to lower pressure to prevent future loss. The key to treatment is to have your pressure checked (glaucoma test) routinely by your ophthalmologist. If you have a family history, have diabetes or have had other inflammatory eye diseases in the past, then the statistics are a little higher that you may develop a glaucoma issue as well. We routinely recommend a glaucoma evaluation every year for individuals over age 40. If detected early and treated, the chances of preserving vision through eye drops or laser is excellent. If glaucoma does not respond to conservative measures, there are modern surgical procedures (such as shunts) that can also be utilized.

Q. What is new in treatment of spinal stenosis? A. If you have ever seen an old cast iron water pipe, you have seen a good example of what is happening in the spine in a patient suffering from spinal stenosis. In a spine with stenosis, arthritis acts like corrosion and causes the holes (called neuroforamen) to constrict, thus causing pressure upon the exiting nerves. This causes irritation to the nerves and even the spinal cord itself when stenosis occurs in the neck. The treatment for spinal stenosis is to decompress the nerves. However, what is the best way to decompress them? In our office, we use two specialized treatment techniques called Flexion-Distraction and Vertetrac systems to help decompress the nerves in patients suffering with spinal stenosis. These are exciting methods of treatment and have helped hundreds of our patients avoid surgery for their spinal stenosis. It is not enough to simply decompress the nerves in spinal stenosis, you have to keep the pressure off for long-term relief. To do this, we prescribe dynamic decompression exercises for the patient to do at home. These exercises are based on specific movements proven to further take pressure off the nerves in the lower back and down the legs. It takes some time for distraction and exercises to decompress spinal nerves.

A. Spider veins are a common problem among the young and old. Spider veins are small blue and red vessels visible within the skin, usually on the legs but sometimes present on the face and chest. There are many treatments available. Sclerotherapy is a treatment of diseased veins using a saline solution which is injected of spinal stenosis?into the veins, sometimes with the help of ultrasound. This solution irritates the vein valve and then closes them. This is not only done for cosmetic reasons, so your insurance may or may not pay for it depending upon the diagnosis and condition of the disease. Sclerotherapy is typically done only on the legs. IPL and laser treatments are used to treat spider veins on the face and chest. With these treatments there is typically little to no down time, but redness and discomfort may last for hours to days. Insurance will not pay for spider vein treatment, but the cost is usually minimal. Consult your primary care physician or vascular specialist to determine the best treatment plan for you.

Research suggests that in the long term, patients treated with conservative methods similar to those used in our office do just as well as those who have surgery to relieve the symptoms of spinal stenosis.

Q. Why does memory worsen with

Q. When is snoring more than just a

minor annoyance?

A. It is important to keep regular dental visits for the maintenance of healthy teeth and gums. Just like regular doctor’s visits to check up on how your body is doing, regular dental visits make sure your teeth and gums are being maintained for the long run. Everyone knows how important it is to brush and floss, but regular dental visits offer a more intensive cleaning and can spot any problem areas before they turn into bigger issues.

A. There have been many studies and theories as to why aging affects our memory. One theory is that aging may affect memory by changing the way the brain stores information and by making it harder to recall stored information. However, science still has not come up with the answer. Most people believe that their memories will get worse as they get older, however, this does not have to be your destiny. Memory is like a muscle - the more you use it, the better it gets.

A. Our country is sleep-deprived-desperate for restful nights, to awaken easily, and be functional throughout the day without needing a nap. The anxiety and stress of our busy world certainly make it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. But those dreams of being rested are even more difficult to achieve when nights are fraught with the tossing, turning, snoring, choking, or gasping for breath of oneself or a bed partner.

A regular checkup is not just about checking for cavities, your dentist or hygienist will also evaluate the health of your gums, and examine your mouth for any indications of oral cancer, diabetes or vitamin deficiencies. Do not be surprised if your dentist also examines your face, bite, saliva and movement of your lower jaw joints (TMJs). Of course this appointment should also include a cleaning and maybe a lesson or two about how to improve the health of your teeth and gums.

In the normal course of childhood, we are constantly learning and being challenged. Once employed, we are intensely engaged in learning and acquiring new skills and abilities. Once middle age comes about, we rarely engage in tasks in which we must focus our attention as closely as we did when we were younger. Such activities as reading the newspaper or practicing a profession of many years are mostly the replay of mastered skills, not learning, so the mental muscle starts to get flaccid.

cleaning every six months?

Special attention will be paid to any plaque and tartar because build-up can occur quickly if you are not keeping a good oral hygiene routine. Certain foods, beverages and tobacco can stain teeth and if it is not removed, then it can harden your teeth and cause irritated gum tissue that can lead to gum disease.

The best way to improve your memory is to take part in activities that require you to be highly focused. Learn new physical activities and take part in activities that demand concentration, and/or mastering new skills.

Stay on top of your daily oral hygiene routine and make sure to stick to a six month dental cleaning program.

To keep the mind alive requires learning something truly new with intense focus. Luckily, at Excel Brain Fitness Center, we make it easy since we have over 40 programs to stimulate and challenge your mind.

Millions are disturbed by either their own or their bed partner’s Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB)—caused by airway obstruction— throughout the night. SDB is a serious health problem, and initially appears as snoring. Although snoring is generally viewed as a minor annoyance, it can be the first sign of a problem with a range of severity. Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) is marked by a greater loss of airway patency than snoring. Those who suffer from UARS are generally young, female, and may also experience gastroesophageal reflux disorder, asthma, depression, and hormonal imbalances. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a serious and often life-threatening problem when sleepers stop breathing for 10 seconds or more (apnea), or breathe at a decreased rate and depth (hypopnea). Choking, gasping for breath, and long periods of time without breathing are all signs of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Snoring, UARS, and OSA are all serious conditions that should not be ignored. Not only do they affect sleep, they are detrimental to an individual’s health. –Dr. Croft Vistancia Orthodontics 623.566.0800 azhealthandliving.com | December 2013

Q. How do you treat knee pain in a teenager active in sports?

Q. Can the stresses of life affect vision?

Q. What is a Quick Recovery Face/Neck Lift?

A. Knee pain is not just commonly seen in

A. The answer is yes. One of the affects that stress can have on your eyes is something called blepharospams. Blepharospams are more widely known as eyelid twitching. These spasms cause the muscles of the eyelid to twitch uncontrollably. In most cases the twitching is not seen, but it is felt more by the individual experiencing the blepharospasm.

the elderly. Today, teenagers are active in sports and a common knee condition called “Osgood-Schlatter knee” develops in the active adolescent. It is also known as the “knobby knee.”

The frequency of “Osgood-Schlatter knee pain increases in teenagers active in sports such as football, soccer, track and field. Patients usually complain of pain between the shinbone and the kneecap. Pain gets worse with running, jumping climbing stairs. The knee pain is caused by stress on the kneecap tendon (patellar tendon) that connects the front thigh muscle to the top of the shinbone. During sports activity, repeated stress and over-contraction of the front thigh muscles pass through the kneecap tendon to the top of the shinbone. Between the ages of eight and 16, the top of the shinbone is not mature. The increased tension and stress from activity may lead to breakdown of the bony structure at the top of the shinbone. It may appear as a painful lump below the kneecap. The treatment of Osgood-Schlatter knee pain is management. A conservative approach, such as RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation) is used. Treatment of acupuncture and physical modality usually achieves a better outcome. For patients active in sports, using elastic tape (Kinesio tape used in OsgoodSchlatter knee pain) across the top of the shinbone could stabilize the weak bone and improve blood circulation of the painful area. – Dr. Jack Kukurin Chiropractic, Acupuncture & Nutrition Network 623.972.8400

Blepharospams usually last from a few hours to a few days without any treatment from a doctor. In extreme cases the twitching can go on for months and your doctor may recommend an injection of Botox to inhibit the muscle of the eyelid from twitching. Eyelid twitching is not just stress-related, it may also be caused by consumption of caffeine and lack of sleep. Another more serious condition that may be stress induced is a retinal condition called central serous retinopathy (CSR). CSR is a condition that can cause severe visual impairment. It is caused by a leakage of fluid from blood vessels under the retina. This fluid causes swelling in the central part of the retina which leads to very blurred and possibly distorted vision. While the visual impairment is usually significant, it is rarely permanent and can take up to six months to resolve with little to no intervention. In severe cases laser treatment may be necessary. Even though most individuals who have stress don’t have visual problems, just be aware that it is a possibility.

that I perform at Dermacare Cosmetic Surgery is a new, minimally-invasive surgical approach to the classical facelift.

This technique enables the procedure to be performed in-office and does not require general anesthesia. It has less risk and a shorter recovery period (10-14 days). This procedure is not to be confused with a “mini-lift” that only cinches up loose skin of the lower face. The dramatic, lasting result of this procedure is achieved by first lifting and tightening the underlying supporting tissues of both the lower face as well as the neck. Once the foundation has been lifted, the overlying skin can then be gently lifted to provide a naturally rejuvenated appearance. The results of the surgery are striking and often leave the patient looking years younger, but it will not leave you with an unnatural “pulled-back” look. While this procedure is safer than conventional facelift surgeries done in the past, there are risks associated with any surgery. Postoperative bleeding, swelling and visible scars are among the risks. Smoking cessation, blood pressure control and complying with pre/post-operative instructions significantly reduce these risks. It is important to choose an experienced surgeon who is Board Certified as a facial plastic surgeon. This board certification requires that a physician complete an additional 5 years of specialized surgical

Q. Can you treat pain using

essential oils?

A. Essential oil has quite a long history in

treating an array of disorders. As part of the growing popularity of natural medicine, essential oils have significant medical benefit. Essential oils are used daily in cleaning sprays, bug repellants and laundry products. Essential oils embody regenerating, oxygenating and immune–strengthening properties of plants. They help to relieve oxidative stress associated with inflammation that contributes to pain. Essential oils are lipid soluble and capable of penetrating cell membranes. They contain oxygen molecules to help transport nutrients into human cells. This helps aid in stimulating the immune system. Many essential oils are very powerful antioxidants. They inhibit free radicals and help in prevention of inflammation and oxidation in cells. Essential oils also have antibacterial, antimicrobial, anti-viral and anti-septic properties. There are specific oils to treat a variety of pain including chronic, bone (arthritic), inflammation and muscle/joint/tissue pain. Oils such as lavender, eucalyptus, frankincense and lemongrass help decrease inflammation that contributes to pain. Wintergreen, cypress, sandalwood and peppermint help to ease bone pain caused by acute injury (fracture), cancer, leukemia and osteoporosis. The future is very hopeful for essential oils according to the American Medical Association there is continued research on properties in essential oils used for curing diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s, Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease.

Q. Do men get Botox treatments?

Q. What is the stomach flu?

A. In the past few years there has been a significant increase in the number of men getting Botox and other cosmetic procedures. That’s right—it's not just the manicure and pedicure, but Botox that has redefined the “metrosexual.” And it’s not just the men that are accustomed to primping, the average Joe is joining the anti-aging crusade as well.

A. Also called the “24 hour bug” or the stomach flu, viral gastroenteritis often hits entire families during the summer. This group of viruses isn’t related to the flu that attacks the respiratory system, but the viruses can cause miserable fevers and body aches.

The thought of needles in the face can turn off any man, add to that the recession and there stands the two greatest deterrents for elective procedures: cost and pain. However, many baby boomers have found themselves seeking employment and quite frankly, they can’t afford to look their age. This is one of the many reasons men state for getting Botox. Along with competition in the workplace, encouragement from a female and not wanting to look grumpy or tired are other top factors for men choosing the elective procedure. The areas that tend to be most popular with men are the vertical lines between the brows and horizontal forehead lines. Some men have their crow’s feet treated as well. Many businessmen are also treating their excessive underarm sweating with Botox, which can reduce their dry cleaning bill. Men generally require higher dosing due to larger muscle mass, with prices ranging from $400-$600. The procedure takes only a few minutes and most men handle the tiny needle very well. The effects of looking youthful, rested and refreshed is what keeps both men and women continuing the treatment.

– Dr. Maltais Physician Skin Solutions at Arrowhead 602.843.4040

For those with the flu, symptoms can vary. Sometimes vomiting and nausea dominate, sometimes diarrhea and sometimes both. For some reason, most viral gastroenteritis seems to last only one to two days. However, the virus can continue to be contagious in the stool for weeks afterward. The rotavirus, against which infants are vaccinated, can often last for nine days and can cause fluid loss. There’s no specific treatment for the stomach flu, although doctors may give anti-nausea or anti-diarrheal medications. The most important complication of viral gastroenteritis is dehydration, which can often be life-threatening in children. Electrolyte solutions given by mouth (and kept down) are the best way to keep children hydrated, but some children may need to be rehydrated by IV in the emergency room or in the hospital. If your child has significant dehydration, the skin over their knuckles may lose turgor, remaining up after being pinched. They may have very dry mouths, and lose their energy and their ability to urinate and produce tears. If your child has these symptoms after a bout of diarrhea and/or vomiting, take them to see a physician right away. – Dr. Wen Sage Family Medicine 623.535.3857

BUSINESS TALK

Q. What should residents and travelers know about Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium during the holidays?

Q. This holiday season what is a good “gift of health" to give to my friends and loved ones?

Q. I always want to help in some way during the holidays, but never know where to start, any ideas?

A. Wildlife World is open every day of the year, including all holidays. When your guests have had their fill of holiday festivities, consider a visit to Ariz.’s largest collection of wild and exotic animals.

A. Wheatgrass! Since most of us struggle to consume the recommended amounts of vegetables in our diets, particularly green leafy vegetables, wheatgrass is a great healthy gift option.

One of the hallmarks of Wildlife World is to create a family friendly experience that brings animals and visitors closer together with innovative habitats and displays. Dragon World features giant reptiles. The baby animal nursery showcases a jaguar cub and a baby South American tapir, both considered threatened species in the wild.

What better gift to give than nutritional essentials to help reduce your risk of disease. Up to 99 percent of the calcium we eat is deposited in our bones and teeth. To be properly absorbed other trace minerals such as boron, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, silicon, strontium and zinc are necessary for absorption to its full potential – And Wheatgrass contains all these minerals!s!

A. With so many needs in the community, it is sometimes difficult to choose a favorite charity. It is especially important during the holiday season to find ways to give back, whether it is with a monetary donation or a gift of time.

Our newest aquarium building features a critically endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle. The main exhibit is a 40 x 10 foot, 40,000 gallon Amazon River Monsters display, which is also home to sharks, rays, the only penguins in Ariz. and about 150 other aquatic species. We also launched the only marine mammal exhibit in Ariz. where a pair of California Sea Lions has settled in nicely. Daily, visitors can hand feed lory parrots apple slices. The giraffe feeding station is where visitors can look eye-to-eye and feed the world’s tallest land mammal. Always popular are the turaco bird feeding, tide pool and stingray touch tanks and the children’s petting zoo. It is important to reconnect with nature whenever and wherever possible. Help build support for wildlife and habitat conservation. Take some time this holiday season to enjoy a fun day at Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium. – Dr. Grey Stafford Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium wildlifeworld.com

According to Living Foods, wheatgrass provides twice the amount of vitamin A as a comparable serving of carrots. Wheatgrass is one of the richest plant sources of vitamin A, which is important for maintaining healthy vision. In wheatgrass, the combination of vitamins and antibacterial agents helps the body rid itself of harmful bacteria for a healthy intestinal/digestive system. Your friends and family can experience all these nutritional benefits with this super food –Wheatgrass with roots and leaves combined! Benefits for healthy skin, extra energy, mental clarity and nutrients that cleanse/feed/detoxify our cells, tissues, organs and create an environment for overall good health. Your health is wealth.

Our favorite charity year-round is the local food bank. We encourage everyone to think of the food banks during the holiday season. While they are always in need of food donations, consider a cash gift as a way to give back this year. Food banks can make dollars stretch much farther and cash donations allow them to purchase the items most needed. The holidays are also a great time to give the gift of time as a volunteer. Skilled care centers, assisted living facilities and senior centers are just a few places where there are folks who would enjoy a friendly visitor. Some of their activity departments use volunteers to help with planned activities as well. Whatever your choice for giving back, take time to count your blessings and share with others less fortunate this holiday season. We wish all of you a happy holiday and happy New Year from all of us at Sun Cities CareGivers.

Q. Does it pay to advertise my business? A. No matter how wonderful your service or product is, if you don't advertise, nobody will know. The goal of advertising should be to cost effectively reach the largest audience possible to attract new patients/customers. If done correctly, advertising can be a wonderful investment; if done poorly, advertising can become financially draining. Here are four tips to start a successful advertising plan: 1.. Go after your target audience; in the right places! No product or service will appeal to everyone. Do research to understand who your audience is and determine what they read, watch and listen to. Find your market and be everything you can be to that audience. 2.. Highlight your competitive advantage; what makes you unique? Find your competitive edge. Too many ads highlight all the features and services and fail to sell their specific benefits. Unless you highlight these benefits, how can you deliver value to potential patients/customers? 3.. Establish your image. You have a car full of hungry kids and there are only two places to stop for lunch; you recognize the McDonald’s arches but you have never heard of the other place. Where will you stop? Image counts; don’t lose a chance to make an impression. 4. You have to spend money to make money. Advertising is not the place to cut corners. Doing so affects the bottom line. Successful advertising may cost some money, but that is because it works. – Great Central Sun Media Group 602.335.0771

Q. Are there any side effects to long-term, un-treated hearing loss? A. There are side effects to living with hearing loss. These problems can compound over time and become even more difficult to correct. Early detection is very important. Some of the problems associated with longterm hearing loss are acoustic atrophy and dementia. Acoustic atrophy comes from living without hearing certain sounds for long periods of time. Your brain can lose its ability to interpret certain sounds that are not presented to it on a regular basis. This can affect the ability to understand specific speech sounds and a person’s overall ability to communicate. It can also create a problem known as recruitment. This is an issue where someone experiences discomfort with loud sounds sooner than they should due to the absence of that sound over time. Recruitment is something that can be overcome through appropriate instrumentation and counseling. There are several aural rehabilitation programs available There are several studies that show a direct link between untreated hearing loss and dementia. This is an issue that would need to be discussed with your medical doctor in order to obtain all of the facts. In many cases, screening for hearing loss will cost you little to nothing out of pocket and can significantly increase your chances of a successful fitting of instruments. Contact your local hearing healthcare professional today and schedule a test.

WHY ADVERTISE WITH The Right Target Audience It is the most important factor, which makes a world of difference and will move your business from market penetration, to market domination.

Results

"The ultimate reason to advertise and your choice of where to advertise is return on investment. A cheap ad campaign that produces few results ends up being an expensive ad campaign. With this in mind, we track our ROI in all advertising that we do. The WVH&L campaign by far has produced the best return on investment of any advertising vehicle we tried. 11 Winter Beauty Tips

W

inter brings with it many things, including chilly nights and the propensity for irritating beauty issues. Cold dry air outside and warm dry air inside can result in moisture loss from both the hair and skin. Not only can this be uncomfortable, but it can be unsightly as well.

The primary beauty concern for most each winter is dryness. Winter is the season for dry skin and chapped lips since lower temperatures and lower humidity result in drier air, both indoor and outdoor. Forced-air heating sources also contribute to the problem, especially if they are not equipped with some sort of humidity adding device. Dry skin becomes itchy and turns into a nuisance. Dry air can also contribute to dry hair. Dry hair tends to be flyaway and prone to static. Your entire body actually may be susceptible to static-related shocks as you traverse carpeting or pull on charged clothing. The low humidity adds to the separation of electrons and protons in the materials surrounding a person, which contributes to extra static electricity. The imbalance of these microscopic particles becomes evident when you touch something metal and a shock occurs. Revamping a health and beauty regimen for winter comfort takes just a little effort. Here are eleven tips that will benefit you and your appearance all season long.

Add moisture to your environment. This is one of the single best ways to combat winter skin and hair issues. Purchase a humidifier that will put moisture to the air. Even boiling some water on the stove and allowing the steam to seep into the air can alleviate a dry home.

Apply skin moisturizers. Dry skin that is consistently scratched could become irritated or even infected if bacteria gets into skin. Moisturizers applied all over the body can help the skin retain moisture and alleviate the itchiness. Creams with menthol could provide a cooling effect that also tames itchiness. Watch out for products that contain alcohol, which could eventually dry out the skin. 44 December 2013 | azhealthandliving.com

Experiment with your home's thermostat. Find an indoor temperature that is most comfortable for your dry skin conditions.

Avoid hot showers. They can strip the skin and

hair of moisture. Try showering in lukewarm water instead, and slather on a moisturizing body lotion afterward.

Avoid electric hair dryers. This can compound dry, frizzy or unruly hair. It may be unwise to step outdoors on a cold day with wet hair, so allow hair to air dry whenever possible.

Avoid licking dry lips. This exacerbates the situation. Instead, use a moisturizing lip balm sparingly. Even rubbing a little olive oil over the lips can help moisturize and prevent cracking.

Choose non-foaming cleansers. When washing face or body, non-foaming cleansers do not strip away essential moisture from the lipid barrier of the skin. Apply an SPF product daily.

Do this before heading outdoors. Ultraviolet rays are still present during the winter, albeit in less concentration.

Avoid frosty eye shadows. In the winter, they tend to make, most people look washed out, especially when the glow of summer skin has waned. Similarly, avoid overdoing bronzer during the winter months, which can make the skin look artificially orange.

Revamp hair color. Bring out golden hues during the winter months to look vivacious. Avoid highlights that are white or ashy. Do not go more than two shades lighter or darker in any direction for a whole-head coloring.

Avoid hat head. Hat head occurs when damp hair has been allowed to dry under a hat, which then causes flattening and denting. Allow hair to dry completely before donning a hat. Consider parting your hair the opposite way before putting on the hat for volume when the hat is removed and hair falls naturally back in place. azhealthandliving.com | December 2013

Foods that Help Fight Fatigue

T

he longer hours of darkness synonymous with winter can promote feelings of lethargy and fatigue. People who leave the house in the early morning darkness, only to return home when the sun has set, often find themselves feeling tired. However, changing your diet to include foods that provide energy may be just what you need to counter such fatigue. Energy levels are often affected by what we eat. If you choose foods that result in an afternoon lump, it could be time to make some changes. They key is to select menu items that will provide a gradual stream of energy through the day, eliminating those highs and lows that can lead to dips in energy. Here are some smart food choices to fight fatigue.

Oatmeal. This fiber-rich food provides a quick boost

of energy from carbohydrates without the sugar crash that is common with many breakfast cereals. The fiber in oatmeal will feed the beneficial bacteria in your digestive tract, helping to keep the digestion system healthy. This means you can easily absorb the nutrients in oatmeal and avoid constipation.

Pumpkin seeds. Researchers at the United States

Agricultural Research Service found that people with magnesium deficiencies required more oxygen uptake during physical activity, which then brought on fatigue. Snacking on magnesium-rich foods will provide the body with the recommended daily allowance. Aim for 310 mg of magnesium for women and 400 mg for men.

Yogurt. The soft texture of yogurt makes it easily

digestible by the body, providing a quick source of energy. However, unlike other foods, yogurt has a good ratio of protein to carbohydrates, making it a longlasting energy source. Yogurt also contains a bevy of healthy probiotics that promotehealthy bacteria in the digestive tract while eliminating harmful bacteria. Recent research from the University of Toronto suggests that probiotics can help ease symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome, among other conditions. This makes yogurt a good meal or snack to enjoy any time of the day.

Whole grains. Choose complex carbohydrates,

which can be found in whole grains, instead of refined carbs. The body digests and releases complex carbohydrates slowly, moderating blood sugar levels and keeping your mood stable. This helps the body maintain adequate energy levels.

46

December 2013 | azhealthandliving.com

Spinach. Fatigue may be a sign of an iron deficiency,

which is a common cause of anemia. Red blood cells use iron to carry oxygen to cells. Without adequate iron, the red blood cells cannot do their job well and mental and physical fatigue may ensue. Spinach is an excellent source of iron, magnesium and vitamin C.

Walnuts. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, walnuts can

alleviate symptoms of fatigue. Astudy published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that alphalinolenic acid found in walnuts can boost energy and relive depression symptoms.

Dark chocolate. Occasionally you may crave

something a little sweet for a pick-me up. Rather than selecting just any candy bar or snack, opt for something smart. Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants and polyphenols. The chocolate helps boost the brain chemical serotonin, which can alleviate feelings of fatigue. Winter doldrums do not have to get you down. Selecting an array of healthy foods that provide maximum energy and mood-boosting properties can help to banish fatigue.

Put a Stop to the Battle of the Holiday Bulge By MS

P

arties, family gatherings and festive foods dominate the holiday season. Overindulgence in rich foods and drink during the holiday season, compounded by cold weather that can make it difficult to exercise, often leads to weight gain by the end of the holiday season. However, focusing on diet and exercise during the holiday season can help you avoid unwanted weight gain and provide more energy as the season progresses. Here are five ways to sail through the season without gaining weight.

Don't scrimp and sacrifice all of the time. The body

is a powerful machine, but it does not always work the way that we want it to. According to nutritional experts, rather than metabolizing food on a daily basis, the body is geared to work over longer periods. That means you can balance out a high-calorie day by eating less food and/or lighter fare on the days before and after those days when you anticipate overeating.

Fill up before you go out. If you are worried about

Moderation is the best approach to diet during the holiday season. Fill up your plate with the right mix of foods.

Do not deny yourself when faced with a big holiday dinner. Rather, fill the plate with a good mix of foods. Devote much of your plate to roasted vegetables and whole grains. Take only small portions of high-fat foods like candied yams or bread stuffing. You will still satisfy your craving, but you will not be overdoing it.

Exercise every day. It can be easy to push exercise aside when you are busy with holiday tasks. Soon your metabolism may slow down in response to your body's suddenly more sedentary lifestyle, leading to weight gain.

high-calorie foods and drinks that are often served at parties or holiday gatherings, eat before going to the event. Hunger may cause you to overeat and fill up on the wrong kinds of foods. Instead, eat a low-calorie snack that is high in protein and high in fiber before leaving the house. Eating beforehand may help you avoid the chips and dips.

Aim for some sort of daily exercise, whether you decide park further away from stores at the mall or take the stairs instead of the escalator. Do not relegate exercise to a New Year's resolution. Inactivity will only mean you have to work harder in the future to shed those unwanted pounds you packed on during the holiday season.

Get plenty of sunshine when possible. Lack of sunlight can attribute to winter blues, which may lead some people to rely on comfort foods. Such foods are typically rich in carbohydrates, fats and sugars. Spending time outdoors in the sun each day can improve your mood and get you off the couch.

Weight gain may be another part of the holiday season for many men and women. However, individuals concerned about adding extra pounds can stop the pattern of gaining weight during the holiday season by making smart choices throughout the season. azhealthandliving.com |December 2013

FAMILY, KIDS & RELATIONSHIPS

BE PRESENT

By the Arizona Commission for the Deaf, the Hard of Hearing and Arizona Relay Service

Noisy Toys that Make the Naughty List! Parents Protect Your Children's Hearing. In 2012, the Sight and Hearing Association (SHA) stated that 19 of the 24 most popular toys tested were more than 100 dB!

T

he holidays are a wonderful and fun time to go shopping. While you are out buying presents for your family members, especially children, it is important to read the warning labels for ageappropriate toys, small parts and other things that may be harmful. This also includes the noise level that a toy registers.

Why is this important? Noise is the number one cause of hearing loss. In fact, by first grade, less than 1 percent of all children have hearing loss but by the time they are teenagers 20 percent of all children have some sort of hearing loss. A few factors can be attributed to this rapidly changing number. According to the Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing (ACDHH), 85 decibels (dB) is the maximum volume a child should be exposed to for no more than eight hours. Decibels are a unit of measurement to gauge volume and decibel volume is measured in several industries including construction and engineering to ensure hearing safety. Sounds more than 100 dB can damage hearing in less than 15 minutes of exposure. In 2012, the Sight and Hearing Association (SHA) stated that 19 of the 24 most popular toys tested were more than 100 dB.

Topping the list Toy Story Talking Figure Buzz Lightyear - 111

dB near the ear, 81.6 at arm’s length.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Leonardo’s Electronic Sword - 109.2 dB near the ear, 81.6 at arm’s length. 52

December 2013 | azhealthandliving.com

Dora the Explorer/Dora’s Desert Friends - 108.2 dB near the ear, 80.4 at arm’s length.

Barbie Little Learner Laptop – 108 dB near the ear, 83.8 at arm’s length.

1Sk Sesame Street Let’s Rock Grover Microphone -107.3 dB near the ear, 79.3 at arm’s length.

What can be misleading is the distance at which the decibels are measured. Most children are not keeping toys at arm’s length; they use them closer and most often right next to their ears. Along with watching, the decibel levels of the toys children play with, parents should also monitor them when playing video games, watching TV or listening to music. There should be time and volume limits that the children are exposed. Noise reducing or volume limiting headphones are a good investment. It is important to remember that if you can hear the music beyond the ear buds it is too loud. According to the American Speech Language Hearing Association, you should also examine toys you already have at home. Remove the batteries or discard the toys if they are too noisy and pose a potential danger. An alternative measure could be to place tape over the speakers on noisy toys. Children should be regularly screened for hearing loss, something that is not routinely done by doctors during a yearly checkup. By detecting the early onset of hearing loss, appropriate measures can be taken to prevent further damage.

The Biggest Danger Behind the Wheel

illions of car trips are taken each year, and though only a small percentage involve people driving under the influence, even one impaired driver can cause a great deal of trouble on the roadways. Drunk, drugged and distracted driving is responsible for thousands of fatalities and accidents each year -- with distracted driving now leading the pack as one of the biggest contributors to vehicular fatalities. Mothers Against Drunk Driving notes that someone is killed in a drunk driving crash every 53 minutes in the U.S., while every 90 seconds someone is injured because of a drunk driver. Though driving under the influence poses a threat to everyone on the road, drunk driving is no longer the biggest risk behind the wheel. Distracted driving is a growing problem, one spurred on by the increase of technological gadgets that take drivers' attention away from the road. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says driving a vehicle while texting is six times more dangerous than driving while intoxicated. The agency reports that texting while driving has now replaced drinking while driving as the leading cause of accidents and deaths of teenage drivers. However, it's not a problem only reserved for youngsters. People of all ages admit to texting while behind the wheel of a car. According to a Harvard Center

By MS

for Risk Analysis study, texting in cars and trucks causes more than 3, 000 deaths and 330,000 injuries per year. To illustrate just how dangerous texting while driving can be in relation to driving while intoxicated, Car and Driver Magazine performed an experiment. During the test, cars were set up with a red light to alert drivers when to brake. The magazine tested how long it would take to hit the brakes when sober, when legally impaired at a BAC level of 0.08, when reading an email, and when sending a text. The results were surprising. Sober, focused drivers took an average of 0.54 seconds to brake. Legally drunk drivers required four additional feet to stop. An additional 36 feet was necessary when reading an email and an additional 70 feet was needed when sending a text. Drivers who text, are more likely to drift in and out of lanes. A study by the Transport Research Laboratory in London found that reaction times for texting drivers were 35 percent worse than those who did not. Although the proportion of alcohol-related traffic crashes has dropped considerably in recent years, the number of accidents and fatalities attributed to causes other than impaired driving has increased. A survey by Nationwide Insurance found that 80 percent of drivers support some type of mobile phone or texting use restrictions while driving.

PLAN & SAVE

By: Rick Rodgers, CFP and author of The New Three-Legged Stool

Tax Planning Strategies There are many free or low- cost resources available to help guide you through the process of starting a nonprofit, both online and at the library. Working at another nonprofit organization or volunteering your time can prove an invaluable experience to men and women hoping to one day start their own nonprofit organization.

U

nlike last year, tax planning for 2013 is not hampered by uncertainties over a looming fiscal cliff. Unfortunately, there is always some uncertainty and a few expiring provisions to warrant special attention by taxpayers.

what their income taxes will look like, it’s time to evaluate which techniques will help the most.

Managing income taxes at year-end involves techniques designed to address three issues:

Adjust your elective deferral plans at work.

Accelerating or deferring income. If a taxpayer

expects to be in the same or a lower tax bracket next year, it's best to defer as much income as possible until after the year-end.

Accelerating or deferring deductions. If a taxpayer's overall tax rate is the same in both years, accelerating deductions achieves tax savings this year rather than waiting for those tax savings to materialize next year.

Take advantage of tax provisions scheduled to expire at the end of 2013. There are several temporary tax provisions, which can only be used this year. Tax planning begins by projecting income and deductions for the year to determine your tax bracket and income thresholds that trigger higher and/or additional taxes, or limits the effectiveness of deductions. One of the impacts of the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (ATRA12) is the reintroduction of the Pease limitation, which can greatly limit itemized deductions. Once a taxpayer knows 54

December 2013 | azhealthandliving.com

Strategies to accelerate or defer income Taxpayers who participate in 401(k), 403(b), most 457 plans, or in the Thrift Savings Plan can defer up to $17,500 this year. Taxpayers age 50 and older can defer up to $23,000.

Harvest capital gains or losses. Long-term capital gains are taxed at 0 percent for taxpayers in the 15 percent bracket. Capital losses can be used to offset capital gains and reduce other income up to $3,000.

Use the IRA. Taxpayers age 59 1/2 and older can

accelerate IRA distributions in 2013. Contributions may be deductible depending on income level and if you are covered by a retirement plan through work. Taxpayers under age 59 1/2 can convert traditional IRAs to Roth IRAs to accelerate income.

Health care assistance: People with health savings accounts – available with some high-deductible health insurance policies – can save up to $3,250 tax-deferred for an individual and $6,450 for a family. Those who are 55 and older can save an additional $1,000. Flex spending contribution limits are capped at $2,500 this year.

Strategies to accelerate or defer deductions Medical expenses. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) raises the income threshold this year to 10 percent of adjusted gross income for taxpayers under age 65. The threshold remains at 7.5 percent for those 65 and older. Taxpayers may need to prepare or defer medical bills to lump expenses in a single year to get the deduction. Gifts to charities. Use a donor advised fund (DAF) to maximize the tax savings from charitable giving. A DAF makes gifting appreciated securities easier. The DAF can be funded in tax years when the deduction will have the most impact. Distribution to charities can be made at any time without tax consideration.

Qualified Charitable Distribution. This year only, taxpayers age 70 1/2 or older can choose to direct up to $100,000 of their IRA-required minimum distribution to charity. By doing so, the distribution does not show up as taxable income, which can lower taxation of Social Security benefits and help reduce other threshold levels to further minimize taxes. ATRA12 extended—but did not make permanent—several tax incentives for individuals. Taxpayers should consider whether they could benefit from these incentives this year and plan accordingly.

The following provisions are set to expire on Dec. 31 unless extended again State and local sales taxes deduction. Taxpayer can choose between deducting state and local income taxes or the sales taxes they have paid through the year.

Deduction for teacher expenses. Eligible educators can deduct up to $250 of any unreimbursed expenses. Deduction of mortgage insurance premiums. Payments of Private Mortgage Insurance premiums can be treated as deductible home mortgage interest in 2013.

Discharge of principal residence indebtedness. This can be excluded from gross income this year.

Qualified Charitable Distribution. Taxpayers can make tax-free charitable donations from their required IRA distributions. azhealthandliving.com | December 2013

Jennifer Lawrence Naturally Gifted

J

ennifer Lawrence is a powerhouse of talent who joined the film industry without any professional training in acting. The 23-year-old brings a sense of realism in the characters she portrays on the big screen. How does she do it?

“I don't invest any of my real emotions,” Lawrence shares with Yahoo! Shine. She does not take her characters' pain home with her either. Her reasoning behind the separation is, “If I'm thinking about me and my life to put fear across my face or make me cry, then I'm reacting as Jennifer, not as Ree,” [her character from Winter's Bone] Yahoo! Shine reports. Originally, from Kentucky, it was not much trouble for this young woman to leave her mark in Hollywood. She actually enjoys being in the limelight, except when she gets nervous. In a recent interview with David Letterman, Lawrence admitted her fear of walking on the red carpet. Other than that, she gels in the mold of “girl next door” perfectly. Lawrence is only a few films old, yet her unique style of acting has landed her prestigious acknowledgements with a fan base increasing at high speeds. Lawrence returned to the big screen with the second installment in the sci-fi adventure series 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire' in November. The last installation of the ‘Hunger Games’ franchise, ‘Mockingjay’, has been split up into two films, according to IBITimes. Lawrence and her co-stars, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutchison, have already started filming. For the upcoming holiday season, fans can expect to see Lawrence in an edgy avatar in her December release, ‘American Hustle’, a crime-thriller based in the ‘70s.

56 December 2013 | azhealthandliving.com

According to AskMiss.com, Lawrence wants to solve world hunger and thirst while inspiring others to do their part as well. The actress has partnered with organizations such as Feeding America, World Food Programme, The Thirst Project and many others to fulfill her social responsibility. Recently, Lawrence was selected to receive the Down Syndrome of Louisville's Friendship Award for her close relationship with childhood pal and neighbor Andy Strunk. A spokesperson for the organization tells Eonline.com, “Jennifer and Andy Strunk (a member of Down syndrome of Louisville) have been friends and neighbors since their middle school days. Jennifer and Andy enjoy a loyal friendship of mutual encouragement and enjoy each other's company and humor. They text and speak on the phone quite frequently. Their families stay in close contact and continue a friendship too.”

Lawrence’s sparkly personality shines through her acting career and charity work. However, in her early days Hollywood gurus wanted her to lose weight. “I was a little girl. I was hurt. It doesn't matter what accolades you get. I know it'll never happen to me again,” Lawrence shared in an interview with Harper’s Bazar UK edition.

Change Your Words. Change Your World. Sponsored by

So how does Lawrence maintain her svelte physique? Exercising, of course! “Training, training, training. There was a lot of running,” Lawrence told Closer Magazine. “I don't want little girls to be like, ‘Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I'm going to skip dinner,'” Lawrence shares with Closer Magazine of her character in the popular ‘Hunger Games’ franchise. “That's something I was really conscious of during training...I was trying to get my body to look fit and strong - not thin and underfed.” Kudos to Lawrence for being confident and setting a realistic example in the world of glitz and glamour.

STAY HEALTHY

aging well By Kathleen Richardson-Mauro and Jane M. Johnson, co-authors of Cashing Out of Your Business

Are You Prepared to Leave the Business You Built? Three Crucial Steps

M

ore small-business owners are selling their companies, with sales hitting a four-year high earlier this year in the U.S. Many CEOs are baby boomers approaching retirement age.

Here are few steps for small-business owners of any age to begin preparing mentally for their non-CEO future.

We are about to see a tsunami of ownership transitions and too many of these small-business owners are not taking steps early enough to plan for it.

You never know when you might receive an unsolicited purchase offer or what life events might rock your world. Most owners do not start thinking about transitioning out until some event gives them a jolt: a significant birthday; children graduating from college or starting their own families; illness or injury.

Most CEOs don’t realize they need to start planning years before they might be ready to sell or hand off their business. In addition, while a lot of that planning is to ensure they will have the money to meet their lifestyle goals, there are other equally important considerations. Small-business owners tend to pour their lives into their companies and it does not take long before their identity is entirely defined by their job. In order to achieve a successful after-life, they need to start laying the groundwork early for their emotional separation. 60

December 2013 | azhealthandliving.com

Start Now

Planning improves your chances for a successful outcome and gives you more control over the process. We sometimes do not realize just how much our life revolves around our business – or we do realize it and don’t want to think about it because the future looks scary. With planning, you can ensure you still have a social life, a sense of accomplishment, challenges, and the other intangibles that make us satisfied and gratified.

Identify what you want to get from your ownership transition You will have both financial and non-financial goals and objectives. Financial may include receiving enough money to live on for the rest of your life and creating a foundation to further a cause important to you. Nonfinancial may include regaining balance in your life and following a passion you gave up when you started your business. Consider goals in every area of life from health, to family, to social connections. This is about remembering your true passions. A time to determine what is most important to you and deciding what you want to do when you can spend less or no time with your business. This will re-energize you and provide you with direction as you figure out the best way to transition the ownership of your business. It will also enable you to minimize any chance for regrets.

BY GIVING JUST A FEW HOURS OF MY DAY

Identify your fears, concerns and other barriers that prevent you from planning Many owners fear what will come next and worry about losing their life’s purpose. Most wonder if they will have enough money to live the lifestyles they desire and about their employees’ futures. Take proactive action to address these concerns by having a family meeting. Discuss the future with your spouse and identify your actual financial needs. That will allow you to find solutions and work through them.

Ways to Maximize Your Money During Your Golden Years

mericans are living longer these days from an average 47 years in 1900 to more than 78 years as of 2010. By 2030, when the last of the baby boomers have turned 65, nearly one in five Americans will be at retirement age, according to the Pew Research Center’s population projections. Money will be a big problem for many of them, especially if boomers develop health problems that affect their ability to live independently. Life Care Funding created a financial solution for seniors that own a life insurance policy that converts the policy into a Long-Term Care Benefit Plan. It gives the policy owner the option to use their policy while still alive to help pay for their choice of senior care services. With 30 percent of the Medicaid population consuming 87 percent of Medicaid dollars on long-term care services, we can see that it is not going to be sustainable. More individuals will be forced to find their own resources to pay for those needs. That is why several States are embracing legislation requiring seniors to be notified that they can convert their life insurance policy for 30 to 60 percent of its death benefit value. The money can be put into an irrevocable fund designated specifically for any form of care they choose. Here are a few more tips on long-term care and other budgetary issues.

Senior discounts add up Restaurants, supermarkets, department stores, travel deals and other merchants give various senior discounts with minimum age requirements ranging from 55 to 62. Some of these places are worth making habits, with 15 percent off the bill at Applebee’s, 30 percent off at Banana Republic and 60 percent off at Food Lion on Mondays! Don’t be shy — you will have to ask for the discount at many of these places.

Long-term care is a matter of survival, use your best options The practice of converting a life insurance policy into a Life Care Benefit has been an accepted method of payment for private duty in-home care, assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care and hospice care for years. Instead of abandoning a policy when you can no longer afford the premiums, policy owners have the option 62

December 2013 | azhealthandliving.com

to take the present-day value of the policy while still alive and convert it into a Long-Term Care Benefit Plan. By converting the policy, you will remain in private pay longer, be able to choose the form of care and still be Medicaid-eligible when the benefit is spent down.

Your “last act” may be decades away, plan accordingly It makes sense to finally enjoy your money after a lifetime of savings, but be smart about it. Take time to organize your paperwork and create a master file that holds things such as insurance policies, investments, property, wills and trusts. Keep your financial picture in one place. Live smart today and hold off on that new car if you don’t need a new one. If your current car is paid off and you sit tight for an additional two years, you will save $7,200 on a new car with $300 monthly payments. Refinancing your home may also be a very good idea, since rates are still hovering around their all-time lows. Get at least three quotes, compare rates, terms and potential penalties to make sure you are getting the best deal. Also, live healthy and buy more fruits and vegetables. Stop buying junk food to lessen the chance you will need long-term care in the future.

Diabetic Neuropathy, Peripheral Neuropathy Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, Plantar Fasciitis If you are suffering from lower back, buttocks and or leg pain or your feet or legs are cramping, numb or burning especially at night, you almost certainly have a condition which involves the nerves of the legs. The largest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve (pictured in red to the right), starts in the lower back, runs through the muscles of the buttocks and down to the tip of the toes. If this nerve gets irritated, you can experience really terrible pain anywhere along the course of the nerve. You may also experience burning, numbness and odd sensations in your muscles. Irritation of this nerve may produce severe cramping or crawling sensations in your muscles.

What happens next truly separates our integrative neurology approach from anything else available to help correct lower back, hip, leg and foot problems. We have pioneered techniques to decompress nerves, but also use a number of natural substances that have been shown in recent scientific studies to help nerves re-grow and repair. There are no current drugs that can do this. But that’s not all. We combine special electrical stimulation techniques with acupuncture. A combination that has been shown to correct abnormal nerve function and promote nerve repair. There simply is no better or more comprehensive system for diagnosing and correcting the cause of spinal stenosis, neuropathy and other conditions that cause lower back, hip and leg pain and numbness.

Of course, your back and leg pain can be caused by a pinched nerve in your lower back. This can be from a vertebra that is out of place, it can be caused by a slipped disc or it can be caused by spinal stenosis or any combination of these problems. Each of these conditions, bad discs, spinal stenosis or displaced vertebrae have very different treatments. Knowing exactly why you have your back and leg To find out how we can help you or learn more about our award winning doctor troubles is absolutely essential for effective and treatments, visit our website at www.kcpv.info or if you need help now, call us at 623.547.4727.
