I believe aging starts the moment you begin to acknowledge it exists… from the time you began checking for wrinkles, brown spots or any signs of getting older and you start to accept and express it Out Loud! That is the day you begin to age! What we think or say becomes a reality. It is why I have chosen to declare how much younger I am becoming, every waking day!

I believe youth and happiness lies within, as it is where God resides! I further believe that by connecting from within we can learn to silence our outer perception of what beauty is and no longer see age as something that needs to be reversed or corrected.

Age brings experience, wisdom and charisma, only created with time. Time you have on loan as a gift from God. Therefore , be grateful for whatever amount you have been given and stop worrying about how you look. Focus 12

your energy on God and make sure you are living the divine plan He has chosen for you. All that really matters is the time you put into the relationship you have with Him. If, in fact, you are stressing about aging and it is what led you to read this issue, maybe it’s time you close your eyes and open your heart. After all, is that not what faith is? God gave you life and all that you need to succeed and be happy - it all lies within. Perhaps it’s time to stop looking at what surrounds us or thinking of the mirror as our only reflection and instead start paying attention to our blessings. It is then when one feels honored for the given opportunity of life and knows that only through His word we can live to be forever young.

Don’t get caught up on exteriors when the interior is what counts. Close your eyes and open your heart- have faith!

The Importance of Turkey Vultures

Despite their reputation, turkey vultures, also known as buzzards, serve an important function in nature. Primarily scavengers, these mostly black feathered animals feed on carrion, which helps prevent the spread of disease. Turkey vultures have the largest range of any New World vulture extending from southern Canada (in the summer) to the tip of South America. Turkey vultures can be found in Arizona year round.

They often soar alone overhead in search of food using thermal currents to stay aloft. However, turkey vultures will perch as well as feed in large groups.

n September 1, 2007, the Anne Rita Monahan (ARM) Foundation was established namesake, a heroic ovarian cancer fighter, to “ARM” women in the fight against ovarian cancer. Anne later lost her battle on May 13, 2009, however her vision to educate women on the warning signs of ovarian cancer lives on with her Foundation and a group of volunteers called the Teal ARMy. The ARM Foundation’s focus is on increasing early detection and decreasing misdiagnosis. ARM focuses on two key areas: Provide research funding to support the development of a reliable screening test for ovarian cancer and educate the community about the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer to increase early detection.

Unlike other cancers, ovarian cancer is often very difficult to detect. Even during a woman’s annual exam, none of the tests performed would screen for ovarian cancer. Due to the lack of a reliable screening tool, most ovarian cancer diagnoses occur at stage 3 or 4, which makes it more difficult to cure.

The Teal ARMy, is working hard to raise awareness about the signs and symptoms of this deadly disease.

Dr. Heather Cunliffe, head of the Breast and Ovarian Cancer Research Unit at TGen, is leading the study and with enough support her team, can continue their research. Currently, proceeds raised by the ARM Foundation fund a research study at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) in Phoenix. The study at TGen focuses on collecting 100 patientmatched ovarian tumor and blood samples to establish a tissue and blood bio bank. This will study mechanisms of ovarian cancer behavior in hopes of finding biomarkers for earlier detection (when most curable), defining patients at high risk of treatment failure, development of novel therapeutic strategies to overcome drug resistance and reduced mortality. This will help to understand why ovarian cancer becomes resistant to therapies, develop better drug treatments to address the cancer’s early-stage drug resistance and aid in the development of a reliable screening tool.

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month and to honor Anne’s memory and all those fighting the cancer battle, the ARM Foundation will host its 5th Annual Tea for Teal on September 28, at the Doubletree Resort by Hilton in Scottsdale,

Guests at the Tea for Teal will have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction, raffle and hat contest. The traditional English Tea will treat guests to an assortment of finger sandwiches, fresh baked scones and petite desserts.

“ARM has donated more than $100,000 to TGen in the last four years,” president of the ARM Foundation, Jennifer Graves says. “With the proceeds from the Tea for Teal, we will get Dr. Cunliffe and her team at TGen that much closer to their goal of developing a more reliable early detection tool for ovarian cancer.”

This chef-powered event sets the stage for menus and dining trends for the fall and winter months and helps put Arizona on the map as a nationally known culinary destination. During Fall Arizona Restaurant Week, more than 200 Phoenix area and Tucson restaurants will offer specialty prix-fixe dinner menus for $30 and $40 per person, excluding beverages, tax and gratuity, unless otherwise noted. Free Tools to Access Medical Information in an Emergency

Sun Health recently launched two signature tools – Vial of Life and File of Life. Both resources, offered for free as a service to the community, are designed to enhance access to important medical information during an emergency. A popular tool used by local residents and emergency personnel for many years, Sun Health, in partnership with Banner Health, recently revitalized Vial of Life with a slightly larger pill bottle. For use at home, the vial/bottle contains an easy-to-complete medical form that contains important information such as prominent medical conditions, past surgeries, physician contact information and medications. Area residents are encouraged to complete the medical form, place it in the pill bottle and then put the bottle in their refrigerator. To help emergency personnel locate the pill bottle, residents are encouraged to post a bright orange window cling on their front window or front door, or on the front of their refrigerator. This orange cling alerts emergency professional to look for the vial in the refrigerator. File of Life puts that same potentially life-saving information in a portable device. The computer flash drive holds emergency medical information. U

terine cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women and may start as a less serious problem such as endometrial hyperplasia, which is an overgrowth of cells in the lining of the uterus.

'Looking back, Yvette Sweepe knows she should have been terrified. It was three years ago that she was doubled-over with excruciating abdominal pain. Sweepe was rushed by ambulance to Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center where Dr. Shana Wingo had been called to perform immediate surry. During the six-hour surgery, Dr. Wingo discovered that Sweepe had Stage 4 uterine cancer (cancer of womb).

Sweepe’s life was truly in danger that day. Nonetheless, while it was one of those highly emotional experiences where one vividly remembers every detail of what they see, hear and feel, she never felt terror.

“It was the calm and compassionate demeanor of Dr. Wingo that made me feel I would not die,” Sweepe says.

“She is the most compassionate woman on earth, and she broke everything down in a way I could understand.”

“Helping women like Yvette is why I do this!” Dr. Wingo exclaims with a smile on her face. Dr. Wingo explains that during medical school, she loved obstetrics and gynecology as well as all of the cute new babies and taking care of healthy women. However, she expressed how caring for women with multiple health problems was where she could make the biggest difference.

“Having somebody with you when you are in the most vulnerable position you have maybe ever been in your life is so profound, and the way they trust you with their life is the beauty of gynecologic oncology,” Dr. Wingo says.

Her specialty is one of the few where a physician follows the full spectrum of a patient’s care. The specialist meets the patient in the office, takes them to surgery and follows them into recovery and remission. Gynecologic oncology is a small specialty where very few people are accepted to fellowships each year. O ovarian cancer is not the most common gynecological cancer, but it is among the most lethal. It has long been considered a “silent” cancer because it can progress without notable symptoms.

A disease that strikes 22,000 U.S. women annually, the symptoms commonly associated with ovarian cancer include bloating, pain in the stomach or pelvic areas, difficulty eating, feeling full quickly, trouble urinating, or feeling urgency to use the bathroom. Changes in menstrual cycles, unexplained weight gain, back pain or fatigue can also be signs. Because some of these symptoms are vague or related to other problems, such as digestive issues, ovarian cancer may not immediately be suspected.

Studies show that having a gynecological oncologist caring for you during ovarian cancer, even if it requires travel outside of your community to get care from a specialist, greatly increases your chance of survival.

Dually Exceptional Student Helping Others

atricia Greenough is gifted. Her profound aptitude for learning and extraordinary academic success, particularly in math, leave no doubt about that. Yet, despite her keen intelligence, Greenough’s classroom experiences have been anything but breezy.

Greenough is considered "dually exceptional" – ahead of the class academically, but challenged by dyslexia, shortterm memory loss, auditory processing issues and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The 23-year-old Laveen resident was certain these learning disabilities would derail her from earning a college degree.

However, she recently proved anything is possible when she walked across the stage at Grand Canyon University to accept her Master’s degree.

“I set a personal goal to complete my Bachelor’s degree in three years and my Master’s in one,” Greenough says.

She has been on a fast track to get a college education because she has big plans. Already teaching math at Betty H. Fairfax High School, she has a passion for helping students just like her – gifted learners who struggle with disabilities, but who may slip through the cracks at most schools.

Reaching her education milestones were anything but easy. Growing up, she was at the top of her class in math, science and numerous other subject areas. In reading and English, however, she barely squeaked by, unable to make sense of letters that skipped and turned all over the page.

She was clever enough to find ways to keep her disability under wraps.

By the time Greenough reached high school, her difficulties were impossible to conceal. She bounced between her high school’s gifted and special education programs. Teachers and administrators tried to find the right method of educating a student so brilliant on one hand, and so challenged on the other.

Greenough understood, at a deeper level, what it meant to believe in her students, bringing her educational journey full circle.

“It’s an incredibly meaningful opportunity to serve these students. I never faced difficult personal circumstances, but I do understand what it means to struggle. It’s amazing how far a little belief and encouragement will go,” Greenough says.

On a handful of occasions, she has rooted out students much like her – gifted kids whose learning disabilities veil their powerful minds. With her signature zeal and commitment, Greenough is helping them navigate their own educational journeys.

“Every time I wanted to give up on myself, my parents and especially my GCU professors propped me up, so that I could realize my lifelong dream,” Greenough says.

Although her career is off to an incredible start, Greenough admits she is not quite finished pursuing her education. She is looking to begin her doctorate studies in curriculum design and development with the goal of writing curriculum for dually exceptional students. In the long term, her dream is to start her own school.

As part of her training at a Title 1 high school in Phoenix, Greenough worked with students from impoverished backgrounds. Just as her professors believed in her,

“In the meantime,” Greenough says, “I’m sharing the tricks I used to get through school to help my students learn math.”

Signs & Symptoms of Childhood Cancer

A

ccording to the Pediatric Oncology Resource Center, the odds of a child developing cancer before the age of 19 are roughly one in 330. However, parents still must watch for warning signs of childhood cancers. The following are some of the more common childhood cancers and their symptoms.

Leukemia Leukemia is the most common childhood cancer, accounting for approximately 35 percent of all childhood cancers. A cancer of the bone marrow, leukemia occurs when abnormal white blood cells divide out of control, eventually crowding out normal cells in the bloodstream.

Signs and symptoms include: • Lethargy, weakness, paleness, dizziness • Back, leg, and joint pain, headaches, trouble standing or walking • Easy bruising, unusual bleeding, frequent nose bleeds, bleeding gums, or petechiae (red pinpoints on the skin) • Repeated, frequent infections • Fever that lasts for several days • Loss of appetite and weight loss • Swollen lymph nodes, bloated or tender stomach, swollen liver or spleen • Night sweats • Irritability Many of these symptoms mimic those of the flu. Oftentimes, parents of children with leukemia note that their children were unusually tired in the weeks before their diagnosis.

Neuroblastoma Neuroblastoma is a rare childhood cancer of the nervous system. Roughly, one in 6,000 children will be diagnosed with neuroblastoma by the time they are five years old. A solid, malignant tumor that appears in the stomach or the spinal cord is often present at birth. Diagnosis is typically years later when kids begin to show some of the following symptoms: • Lump or mass in the abdomen, chest, neck, or pelvis • Loss of appetite, nausea, weight loss, stomach pain, constipation, difficulty urinating • Black eyes, a droopy eyelid, a pupil that does not constrict, vision problems • Pain in the chest, difficulty breathing, persistent cough • Pain or numbness in the lower extremities, limping, inability to stand, stumbling • Bone pain, fever, irritability, listlessness • Backaches, which is unusual in children The majority of neuroblastomas are found in the abdomen. Youngsters with a tumor in their abdomen may feel “full” and suffer from stomach pain, while a child with a tumor in their head or neck may have a noticeable mass and a droopy eyelid.

Wilms tumor Is a cancerous tumor on the kidney that accounts for 6-7 percent of childhood cancers, more common in children under the age of seven. It can spread

to other areas of the body, so early diagnosis and treatment is paramount.

Symptoms include: • Abdominal swelling/pain, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting • Constipation • Fever of unknown origin • Night sweats • Abnormal urine color or blood in the urine • Malaise The lump of the tumor is not always detectable. Diagnosis of Wilms tumor is not easy, as symptoms may be attributed to the flu.

Childhood cancers are uncommon, but parent’s observations are often the first step to a diagnosis. If any of the aforementioned symptoms last more than several days, parents should contact their child’s pediatricians.

Can Iron Alleviate Symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome? By MS

I

rritability, bloating, pain and depression are all side effects of premenstrual syndrome, or PMS. PMS can be a minor annoyance for some, but debilitating to others. Diet can play a role in the in the severity of PMS Symptoms. Women whose diets were full of plant-based iron were one-third less likely to develop symptoms of PMS than women who consumed less iron. Non-meat sources of iron include dried beans and green, leafy vegetables like spinach and kale. In addition, women who consumed 10 milligrams of zinc per day were found to have a lower risk of developing symptoms of PMS as well.

Researchers are not sure why iron and zinc play such a critical role in PMS symptom reduction, but some suggest that it has to do with serotonin production. Iron is involved in serotonin production, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood and appetite. Low serotonin levels play a role in clinical depression and have linked to PMS symptoms.

Women should know that supplementing a diet with high doses of zinc and iron is unadvisable, as these minerals could cause serious health problems if taken above the recommended levels. Zinc and iron obtained from natural food sources is recommended over oral supplements that supply zinc and iron.

Other natural remedies could help with PMS treatment and prevention. Increasing calcium and magnesium intake can help as both nutrients can relax muscles and alleviate cramping.

Although many women refrain from exercise when battling PMS, such activity actually may help ease symptoms. Aerobic or cardio exercise reduces stress, boosts circulation, releases endorphins and has been shown to reduce the uncomfortable symptoms of PMS. A well-balanced diet and exercise are two ways to be able to relieve symptoms of PMS. Keep in mind that severe PMS is not typical and any abnormal emotional or physical symptoms should be addressed by a gynecologist or family doctor. azhealthandliving.com |September 2013

an what you think actually have an effect on your body? According to research, it can. That is the mind and body connection at work. Your psychological and emotional state affects the endocrine system. The hypothalamus, the emotional center of the brain, transforms emotions into physical response affecting appetite, body temperature, circulation and a host of other functions. It stands to reason that if you can control your emotions, you can control these physical responses.

Thoughts could age you Emotions (thoughts) control physical response. Your body is programmed to “fatten up” during the winter. Find a photo of yourself in which you really liked the look from the neck up. Then, cut out a beautiful bikini body that you admire from a magazine.

Here is the key – putting your head on a tall, super skinny supermodel’s body may not be realistic.

Specifically find a bikini body that resembles your body type very closely so that your goal would be attainable. Tape the photo of your head to the photo of the bikini body. Every time you go to the fridge, you will see that photo. The purpose is not to make you eat less. The purpose of having the photo there is to remind your unconscious brain “You look like that.”

Maybe it will have the effect of curbing your appetite, unconsciously. It will not happen in a week and it does not 26

Visualizing a younger version Visualize the inside of your body. Study charts of the human body so that you could get a better visual in your mind. All you have to do is search online “human body chart” images and it is like a free science course! Visualize your telomeres as long and tightly knit up at the ends.

A telomere is a region of repetitive DNA at the end of a chromosome, which protects the end of the chromosome from deterioration. Scientists consider it an excellent marker of aging. The longer your telomeres are, the “younger” your cells.

Telomeres were only recently discovered and understood by biological researcher Elizabeth Blackburn and colleagues, and play an important role in protecting your chromosomes from critical damage.

You can use this visualization technique during your own meditation time to “influence” your telomeres. In case you are thinking that meditation cannot really benefit you, think again. In a study conducted by the University of California, researchers found that people who regularly meditated over a three-month period had more active telomerase, that enzyme that helps preserve telomeres.

Throughout history, we have created groups that allow us to grow lasting bonds. Many join tennis clubs, have teatime, or share gossip with friends.

Women continue to form groups for communication, creating bonds and supporting one another to become more empowered.

Women are social beings. Generally, they do not like to be alone and isolate themselves. They nurture one another.

The need for community with other women is biological. It is in a woman’s DNA. They experience similar thoughts, emotions and go through similar physical changes. They are mothers, daughters, granddaughters, sisters and friends.

Q. The inside corner of my eyes are frequently red and irritated and I think I see a growth on the surface.

Should I be concerned?

A. The most common issue in this scenario is a growth on the eye that is called a pterygium. This growth starts on the conjunctiva (white of the eye) but often progresses centrally onto the cornea and can affect vision. The factors that worsen this progression are genetics, too much sun exposure, and dryness. These are all factors that are rampant in Arizona. Wearing sunglasses and using frequent artificial tears can help prevent progression, but once these growths have progressed, they need to be removed with a minor surgical procedure.

At our practice, our advanced treatment techniques involve removal and repair utilizing hi-tech, genetically engineered tissue applied with gentle tissue glue instead of stitches. You are able to return to reasonably normal activities on the first day or two after the procedure.

Eye drops are necessary for one to two months after the procedure to help prevent the possibility of recurrence.

Management of these issues at earlier stages will help significantly at preventing progression that can lead to serious blurring of vision. In order to prevent recurrence in the long term, it is important to get in the habit of protecting your eyes from the sun; a hat and sunglasses when out in the sun should be part of your daily routine.

Q. Is non-surgical spinal cord stimulation recommended for pain relief?

A. Often, when surgery fails and nerves are damaged, a spinal cord stimulator is recommended to patients for pain relief.

Spinal cord stimulators are similar to pacemakers used to keep the heart in rhythm.

Instead of connecting the device to your heart, the device is connected to the dorsal column of the spinal cord. When the dorsal columns are activated by the spinal cord stimulator, pain is reduced or eliminated.

Therefore, dorsal column stimulation can be a relief for folks suffering from chronic pain.

Unfortunately, to implant a stimulator requires surgery and all of the complications associated with it. Sometimes the device fails or scar tissue forms or other adverse events happen. Because it is a surgical procedure, it also is expensive.

Studies by researchers in Italy suggest that it may be possible to stimulate the dorsal columns of the spine and block pain without surgery and the potential complications of surgery. It is a unique type of electrical field shown to activate the dorsal columns of the spinal cord and block pain without surgery.

Another method of activating the dorsal columns of the spinal cord without surgery is to apply vibration to the body. Using special MRIs, researchers were able to document activation of the dorsal columns of the spinal cord in response to vibration.

Q. How are brown age spots removed?

A. There are many techniques and

treatments available to remove freckles and age spots, but what many people don’t realize is that brown spots can be removed in a few, quick treatments.

Photo facial treatments use IPL (intense pulsed light) to treat a wide variety of skin conditions, such as freckles, age spots, acne, broken capillaries, rosacea and some cases of melasma. A photo facial is similar to a laser treatment in that it uses light energy to target pigment and redness while leaving the remaining skin untouched. It causes no damage to the dermis or epidermis.

Once the treatment is complete, the spots will turn very dark and will fall off the face in about a week. As the skin cells naturally regenerate and fall off, the destroyed spots fall off as well.

The treatment takes about 15 minutes and feels similar to numerous rubber band snaps. The skin may be red and warm for a few hours. This treatment is suitable for lighter skin types and not recommended for darker skin. involve the eyelid. The most common external eye conditions are blepharitis, styes and chalazia. While they can affect vision in extreme cases, they mostly cause pain and irritation on the eyelid itself, and are usually easily treated.

Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelid around the eyelash follicle usually caused by an overgrowth of bacteria that normally reside on the skin. Blepharitis presents with red irritated eyelids with scales that stick to the base of the eyelash. Eyelids may be swollen, itch and burn. Treatment usually involves daily cleansing of the eyelids with mild soaps or special eyelid cleansers. In severe cases, antibiotic ointments may be helpful.

Styes are caused by bacterial infection in the small oil glands of the eyelid along the edge of the eyelid. Styes are soft, painful and tender. Most styes will grow for 3-4 days and then break open and drain. Styes are treated will hot compresses 3-6 times a day and usually heal in about a week. Once a stye breaks open, a topical antibiotic may be needed.

Minimally-invasive brow lift.

Typically, the most evident sign of brow aging is descent and hooding of the outer third of the eyebrow. This exaggerates the wrinkling of the upper eyelid skin. The lateral brow (outer portion) usually descends more than the medial brow because that portion of the brow has no direct attachments to the forehead muscles or skull.

This technique is used to lift the lateral portion of the eyebrow (up toward the temples). The procedure can be performed in-office and no IV sedation is required.

When combined with an eyelid lift (blepharoplasty), this technique is effective in preserving or restoring facial harmony.

Full brow lift.

Chalazia are firm lumps or cysts in the eyelid. Chalazia are different than styes in that they are usually not painful and are not caused by bacteria. Chalazia form when the oil gland of the eyelid becomes blocked.

Styes that don’t drain and heal can become chalazia. Chalazia are usually treated with hot compresses. If they don’t resolve, surgical removal may be necessary.

This surgery is more comprehensive. It is designed to address the entire forehead and improves eyebrow position, forehead wrinkles, wrinkles high on the bridge of the nose and frown lines. Light IV sedation is required for this procedure. In this procedure, the whole forehead is mobilized.

The muscles that produce the deep vertical wrinkles in the area between the eyebrows, (“the angry 11’s”) are partially removed.

The result is a dramatic improvement and provides a freshened, revitalized look with a natural appearance.

During puberty there is an increase in sex hormones and this can result in an increase in the blood flow to the gums. This may cause the gums to become more sensitive, swollen or turn red and feel tender. During pregnancy a woman may experience similar symptoms or increased gingivitis (known as pregnancy gingivitis) starting in the second or third month of pregnancy.

During this time, some women may notice swelling, bleeding, redness or tenderness in the gum tissue.

Women who are menopausal or postmenopausal may experience changes in their mouths as well. They may notice discomfort in the mouth, including dry mouth, pain and burning sensations in the gum tissue and altered taste, especially salty, peppery or sour. In addition, menopausal gingivostomatitis affects a small percentage.

Gums that look dry or shiny, bleed easily and are often abnormally red can define this condition.

Q. What is the importance of greens in gene discovery?

A. Eating your greens may be even more important than previously thought.

There is a new discovery that an immune cell population, essential for intestinal health, could be controlled by leafy greens in your diet.

In a recent article published in the journal Nature Immunology, a research team discovered that the gene T-bet is essential for producing a population of critical immune cells and responds to signals in the food we eat.

Dr. Gabrielle Belz, a member of the research team said, "The study revealed T-bet is essential for generating a subset of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), which are a newly discovered cell type, that protect the body against infections entering through the digestive system."

In this study, it was discovered that Tbet is the key gene that instructs precursor cells to develop into ILCs, which it does in response to signals in the food we eat and to bacteria in the gut. Dr. Belz noted the ILCs to be essential for immune surveillance of the digestive system and this being the first time a gene has been identified responsible for the production of ILCs. The immune cells found in the lining of the digestive system protect the body from bad bacteria in the intestine. They are also believed to play an important role in controlling food allergies, inflammatory diseases and obesity, and may even prevent the development of bowel cancers.

A. Absolutely! The rotator cuff is made up of four muscles. Often when there is an injury to the shoulder one or more of those muscles will develop scar tissue or adhesions. Most often there will be inflammation and a loss of range of motion in the shoulder. It is quite a painful condition, and it can greatly impair daily activities. Typically, even with treatment, this type of injury can take weeks or even months to heal.

eople want to look their best. The good news is that there are now effective, minimally invasive, low downtime approaches that reduce, or even eliminate, the appearance of sun-damaged and aging skin.

Achieving beautiful, healthy skin is a process, not an event.

It is accomplished by working from the outside in and the inside out. The link between nutrition and the quality of your skin is also ‘written all over your face’.

Work from the outside in

Work from the inside out No matter what your skin type, healthy eating is an essential component of a good skin care regimen. For some people, eating the wrong foods can actually cause problems.

Here are a few corrective and preventive steps you can take to achieve a more youthful look.

All skin types. Protect your face from the sun. Use a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB light, and wear a wide-brimmed hat.

Older skin. Exfoliant creams remove dead skin cells that do not slough off as readily as when you were young.

Prescription creams have been shown to reduce wrinkles and liver spots due to sun exposure.

Forehead wrinkles. Injected Botox, a brand of botulinum toxin, partially immobilizes the muscles that form expression lines for skin smoothing, although some deep expression lines may not go away.

Sun damage and acne scars. Lasers can resurface facial skin by stripping away the outermost layers. Some “non-ablative” lasers also stimulate collagen formation, which helps smooth wrinkles.

A natural defense system. Foods rich in antioxidants seem to have a protective effect on the skin. Antioxidant-rich foods include carrots and other yellow and orange fruits and vegetables, spinach and other green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, blueberries, peas, beans and nuts. Women who consumed more linoleic acid, found in nuts and seeds, had a lower incidence of dry skin.

Curbing acne flare-ups. Individuals should avoid dairy products, especially cow’s milk, processed foods high in white flour, such as white bread, white rice and sugary foods and beverages such as candy bars and soda. Foods that cause ‘spikes’ in blood sugar levels can also trigger hormone production, which in turn can boost oil production.

Psoriasis, rashes and other skin conditions. Certain foods can cause hives and other reactions. Individual sensitivities vary, but common culprits are gluten, dairy, eggs and additives. People with psoriasis may see improvement by eating a low-glycemic load, Mediterranean-style diet.

Your skin responds not only to what you put in and on your body, it also reflects your overall mental and physical health.

Taking corrective and preventive measures that reduce sun-damage, increase exercise, promote healthy eating and decrease stress will help you look your best.

DIY Tricks to Replicate Spa Treatments

Summer fun, unfortunately, can give your skin and hair a beating. Below are some DIY tips to whip your skin, hair and hands back in shape.

For a clean, shiny and touchable face •Prepare pot of boiling water with several bags of chamomile tea, allowing tea to steep.

•Place face over steam from pot and cover head with towel to trap steam.

•Place cucumbers or well-squeezed, icy chamomile tea bags on eyes to reduce puffiness.

•Dab off excess moisture. Apply scrub cream in gentle circular and upward motion to face, neck and chest. Place emphasis on beard and neck to help lift ingrown facial hair.

•Rinse thoroughly with warm, moist washcloth. Apply witch hazel, rose, or lavender water with spray or cotton pad.

•Apply moisture lotion/cream in upward massage strokes placing slight pressure on temples and under forehead bridge line to release tension.

For softer and shinier hair with improved scalp circulation •Mix lemon juice and warm green tea. Apply mixture to scalp with brush or applicator. Pour remaining amount throughout hair.

•Allow mixture to remain on scalp for a few minutes to cleanse scalp and hair follicles.

•Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Apply a combination of two parts fresh avocado and two parts yogurt. Massage into hair in circular motion to relax the scalp and stimulate hair growth.

•Gently massage temples and base of scalp line. Place plastic shower cap on hair and wrap in warm towel for 10 minutes or until towel cools off.

Myths About Body Fat

ody fat is often considered the enemy for those looking to get fit. People will try many types of diets and exercise in an effort to rid their bodies of excess fat. Part of what makes fat so confounding is the misconceptions surrounding this natural component of anatomy. By separating the myths from the facts, adults might find their efforts to banish body fat much more successful.

Myth #1: Body fat is only under the skin’s surface While body fat near the surface of the skin (subcutaneous fat) may be most noticeable, it is actually accumulated throughout the body. Organs can accumulate fat (visceral fat) and wrap around the heart and muscle. Visceral fat can be toxic and unhealthy. When people begin to exercise, they burn away this visceral fat and the results are often noticeable shortly after an exercise regimen begins.

Myth #2: Muscle turns to fat without exercise Muscle and fat are two separate entities, and one cannot become the other. People will gain weight after they stop exercising because fat will begin to accumulate more readily because it is not being burned. Fat may mask muscles; however, muscles will not turn to fat. Upon returning to regular exercise, a person can regain their physique.

Myth #3: Body fat develops from eating fatty foods Fat in food will not necessarily turn to fat on the body. Fat is formed from excess calories. When the body takes in more calories than it uses for energy, that excess is stored as fat reserves.

Myth #4: Starving will burn fat Depriving the body of calories may initially force it to burn stored body fat. However, if the calorie restriction is so marked, the body may actually go into “starvation mode” where it breaks down fats more slowly. When food is reintroduced, the body may store more fat in anticipation of future deprivation. This can cause a person to gain more body fat than if they had just adhered to a moderate diet.

Myth #5: Body fat can be lost from just one area Fat will not diminish in just one spot from targeted exercise.

The body burns fat evenly so that one portion is not depleted more than another, resulting in an area of the body that is not naturally insulated by fat. A diet and exercise plan will produce gradual shedding of body fat all over the body. Yet, the appearance of diminished fat may be visible in particular areas more so than others.

Myth #6: Fat modulates body temperature New information suggests that it is muscle that helps regulate body temperature, although not entirely understood why.

Muscle protein called scarlopin is believed to help regulate body temperature as well as muscle contractions.

Myth #7: Fat weighs less than muscle Muscle and fat weigh the same. A pound of bricks will weigh the same as a pound of cotton. Muscle is more dense than fat, so if a person is exercising and building muscle while shedding fat, they may not notice a big change in weight.

Why Do We Need Fiber?

any food products boast added fiber on their packaging. This is in response to the public’s growing desire to consume foods with high levels of dietary fiber. Medical professionals claim it is an essential element to a healthy diet. Despite that, many consumers remain in the dark about the role fiber plays in the body.

About fiber Fiber will pass through the human digestive system virtually unchanged from when it was consumed and without being broken down into nutrients. Fiber is classified into two types – insoluble fiber, which will not dissolve in water, and soluble fiber, which can be dissolved. Insoluble fiber is typically found in whole grain products, dark leafy vegetables, green beans, wheat bran, corn bran, seeds, nuts, and skins of fruits and vegetables. Soluble fiber comes from foods like oats, nuts, fruits, and dried beans.

Fiber and digestion The Harvard School of Medical Health advises people should get between 20 to 30 grams of fiber each day, though many people do not consume that much. Fiber adds bulk in the digestive system, which helps soften stool and flush out the intestines. It assists in making bowel movements more frequent, preventing constipation. A diet high in fiber helps reduce the risk of hemorrhoids and diverticular disease.

Fiber and weight loss Fiber, particularly soluble fiber that can be slowly digested, will prolong the digestive process helping to keep the stomach fuller longer. This can help a person eat healthy portions. Fiber-rich foods are also less calorie-dense, which means you can eat more and feel full. Increasing fiber consumption may help adults looking to lose weight.

Fiber and blood sugar The slow absorption of carbohydrates also regulates the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream. This can prevent sugar spikes that may be dangerous to those with diabetes.

It also may be able to help reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Fiber and cholesterol Soluble fiber has been shown to help lower blood cholesterol concentrations by decreasing the absorption of cholesterol and bile acids in the small intestines. When less bile acid is absorbed, the body must use stored cholesterol to make more, lowering blood cholesterol as a result.

How to increase fiber consumption While many products include added fiber, here are some of the best ways to increase the number of grams of fiber consumed daily.

Eat more bran. Bran has the highest fiber content of any food at about 25 to 45 percent.

Consume whole fruit instead of juice. Whole fruits have more fiber and fewer calories than juices. Eating fruit can help you to feel fuller longer.

Pass on refined flours. Opt for whole grains whenever eating bread, cereal and baked goods. Try to aim for grains that have at least three grams of fiber per serving.

Increase your consumption of beans. Beans are relatively inexpensive, filling and tasty. Plus, they pack a great deal of fiber, protein and other important nutrients.

How to Talk About Weight with Your Children

f your child is overweight, deciding to talk about this unhealthy lifestyle is only the first step. It can also be a huge challenge to have a productive, helpful discussion, especially if your child is unwilling to hear what you have to say.

Here are eight suggestions for avoiding as much conflict as possible.

Put the focus squarely on health and off weight Whether by default or by design, each family has a health and wellness “culture”. This includes the types of food that are kept in the house, how heavily physical activity is emphasized, what sleep patterns are encouraged, how much health information is available and more. As a parent, you should emphasize each aspect of this health culture, not just your child’s weight. Remember, healthy weight follows good lifestyle behaviors, but good lifestyle behaviors typically do not follow weight loss diets.

Recognize that you spend too much time focusing on weight Most people do not realize how much they use weight as a yardstick to measure their overall quality of life as well as their worth. For example, how many times have you asked about a piece of clothing, “Does this make me look fat?” with the understanding that if the answer is ‘yes’ you have somehow failed? That is why, when broaching the subject of weight with your child, and in your own life, it is important to stop talking about weight and even, to some extent, appearance.

Emphasize other characteristics. For example, talk about how an unhealthy lifestyle influences your child’s self-esteem and thus demeanor, as well as how they express himself or herself and the impression they make on other people.

Ask your child what would help Yes, you are the authority figure in this relationship, but it can be a mistake to assume that you know the best way to help your child become healthier. One of the problems with giving support from a position of experience is that you tend to think that your child’s situation is the same as yours; therefore, the things that worked for you will work for them. That is not 50

necessarily the case. Instead, it is always a great idea to ask what your child thinks the best course of action would be.

Focus on change, even if you run into resistance The purpose of any discussion about losing weight and living a healthier lifestyle is to bring about change. In other words, talking to your child about their weight angst for an hour might have some value because it allows them to vent, but try not to leave the discussion there. Try to take onestep forward, too, even if your child is resistant to change.

An effective way to overcome resistance (or even cut the conversation short if things are getting heated) is to get a commitment to make just one change in the next week.

That might be anything from drinking fewer sodas and more water to walking three days a week. Focusing on one simple change a week seems manageable (as opposed to dropping 30 pounds, which is overwhelming), and is a very constructive way to move the conversation forward without being too bogged down.

Observe how your child, and the whole family, uses food Your discussion will be better received and more effective if you are well informed, so before instigating “the talk”, observe how your child uses food. For example, if you see that they eat in order to manage their emotions, you have gained an important piece of information about a very damaging habit. The truth is you are not always your best observer. If you can determine whether your child is using food as a drug to avoid discomfort or as a stress manager, you are one-step closer to attacking the root of the problem.

You can explain to your child that this underlying eating “trigger”, not food itself, is what you will need to focus on managing.

Do not be judgmental One thing is for sure – nobody is perfect. Another thing is for sure – if you attack someone with words, they will stop listening to you. Considering those two truths, you should avoid blaming your child at all costs. The fact is, we live in a fat culture, and the majority of Americans are overweight. In many ways, your child’s struggle is not their fault. However, it is their and your responsibility to do something about it.

The focus should always be on how you can help your child move forward from here, expressed as lovingly as possible.

Walk the walk In the end, your example is the best way to change your child’s health behaviors. Teens, in particular, are sensitive to hypocrisy. So if you are not ready to make any and all of the changes that you are asking of your child, do not instigate the weight discussion in the first place. If you cannot walk the walk, then your actions will simply be encouraging your children to continue with unhealthy habits that will have a major negative impact on their lives.

If you really cannot get through Sometimes, despite their best efforts, parents just cannot get a positive response from their children. If this happens in your family, someone needs to have the weight discussion with your child. Getting professional help is always a good idea, but there may be others such as relatives, friends, or teachers who might get a more receptive response.

ementia has become the No. 1 cause of disability globally, according to the World Health Organization.

Stroke, which can also profoundly impair judgment and decision-making, stands at No. 2.

This year, 7.7 million new cases of dementia will be diagnosed and 15 million people will suffer a stroke. By the time dementia symptoms become apparent, their competence may already be affected. Strokes can be tragically sudden.

While many people carefully plan for retirement and what will become of their estate after death, too few provide for that middle ground – incapacity.

People should plan for incapacity, and if it never comes into play that is wonderful. Incapacity planning ensures you are able to speak for yourself in all decisions, from your medical care to financial affairs.

Here are three steps everyone should take, from the accounting, legal and financial perspectives.

Get Disability Insurance The likelihood of something happening that affects your ability to work is high, so you really should carry disability insurance.

How you pay for it can have different tax impacts. If you purchase it through your business, whether as owner or employee, you can take a tax deduction on 52

the premiums. However, that means any claims paid will be taxable. If you pay with post-tax dollars, any benefits are not taxable. The difference in saving taxes on $200 a month in premiums versus $5,000 a month in benefits is significant.

More new policies now are capped at 10 years of payments – not lifetime. So be sure you understand the terms.

Have legal documents that clearly state your wishes.

These include a durable power of attorney for financial affairs and an advanced health care directive for medical decisions. Name the people, the “agents”, who will be responsible for implementing those decisions, and draw up a document that delineates their responsibilities and powers. Choose people in whom you have a great deal of faith and trust. People need to remember they are going to be vulnerable. You do not want to pick someone if you have a quiver of doubt about them. One safeguard is to name an agent, and a second person to whom the agent must report. Just the idea that you have to report keeps people honest.

In some states, the government provides forms so people can prepare these documents themselves. You should at least consult with an attorney.

If you are the “non-financial” spouse, become familiar with the financial plan.

Typically, one spouse is in charge of the finances, and the other takes a back seat, or even no seat. The noninvolved person needs to understand how the finances are arranged and planned, and he or she needs to be very comfortable with the family’s advisors. This will prevent a nightmare during an already stressful time should the involved spouse suddenly become incapacitated.

Both spouses should attend meetings with the family’s advisors, even if one spouse does not fully understand or is not interested in all the details. If something happens, they will know who to call and what to do. They will avoid a nightmare. That is piece of mind.

It is important to have these provisions in place long before you think you will need them.

Getting the Most out of Social Security Benefits

T

oo many people end up getting less than what is due to them, from Social Security, when they retire because they do not know the rules and the real financial impacts.

There is a lot of talk about the future of Social Security, but you still have this benefit and if you are 50 or older, you should be planning to make the best use of it.

Below are important facts to keep in mind as you plan for how Social Security will factor in your retirement:

Be convinced to wait a few more years Many people are understandably eager to retire as early as possible, while others fear Social Security retirement benefits will suddenly vanish. Therefore, they want to get what they can as quickly as possible by age 62. However, if you are counting on those benefits as part of your income, you should wait until you are eligible for the full amount.

That is at age 66, if you were born between 1943 and 1954, and at age 67 if you were born in 1960 and later. If you are in the older group, retiring at 62 cuts your benefits by a quarter.

For the younger group it is nearly a third. Chances are, you will be better off mentally and physically if you wait anyway.

More importantly, many studies show that people live longer and are more vital the longer they remain employed.

The reductions in Social Security add up to a considerable sum The average retirement benefit in June of this year was $1,222.43, according to the Social Security Administration.

People born in the 1943-1954 group, who are eligible for that amount at age 66, will get just $916.82 a month, if they retire at 62. If they live to age 90, that is a total of $308,052.36. By waiting just four years, they will net an additional $44,007.48.

Waiting until age 70 can make you eligible for a bump in benefits of up to 8 percent a year, but there are no increases if you delay longer.

If divorced, were you married for at least 10 years?

If your married for a decade and are not currently remarried you may be eligible to receive benefits based on the former spouse’s work record. Some of the other requisites are that you must be age 62 or older, and the former spouse must be entitled to receive their own benefits. If the former spouse is eligible for a benefit, but has not yet applied for it, the divorced spouse can still receive a benefit. Additionally, two years must pass after the divorce.

Tips for Thriving Without a Partner or everyone – even people in an ideal relationship with a lifelong partner – there might be times when you are alone.

No, it is never easy to recover from the loss of a loving partner by your side, but you will. You will learn how to be very happy on your own. It is possible at any stage of life.

Those who have been divorced or separated from their spouse, or have not met that special someone yet also feel a sustained loss similar to a death. However, going solo can be an unexpected and fulfilling experience.

Below are important markers along your journey to finding happiness again:

Taking control Whether you are widowed or emerging from a breakup, you have to re-evaluate and assess where you are and take steps to move forward. If you were married and you have been off your game for a while, have neglected a stack of mail, been out of touch with friends, etc., start making progress one task at a time. If you have been left with papers and bills to handle, create a system, perhaps a digitized one to restore order. If your girlfriend or boyfriend left you, it is time to recognize and respect your self-worth. Consider getting into good physical shape with an improved diet and a schedule for training. You might even consider a professional reboot – anything that gets you focused on something constructive can help you move on. Remember, you are responsible for yourself. You have to take action.

Ease the throttle While it is essential to take proactive measures, it is not wise to try to do it all at once. In some areas, you should throttle back. Aim for achieving a regular sleep schedule – stress often affects one’s ability to sleep well, and current research is finding the heightened negative side effects of insufficient sleep. Also, take a break while awake, you will think more clearly, have more energy and be prepared for the next steps, whatever they may be. Take a deep breath and get outdoors.

Even a short walk is an excellent stress-reliever while providing moderate exercise. It is important to eat balanced meals, but you are human and that is not always possible. You 62

may be tempted to indulge in junk food, alcohol and other drugs while in emotional pain, but this ultimately makes life harder. Try to include different colored items on your plate, which is an easy way to eat well.

If you are grieving, know that eventually, you will feel better Grieving in the initial stages is terrible. You have to go through the experience of loss. Until then, expect to yo-yo between emotions. In time, you will get your health and strength back and find a reason to get out of bed each morning.

he idea of “DIY” is definitely in vogue, bringing an upswing in popularity of knitting and crocheting, and there is no sign interest will wane anytime soon.

Pinterest and Etsy are two of the hottest websites online today, and they are brimming with hand-knitted items, from socks and scarves to purses and anything that can be made from yarn.

The hand-knitted caps and sweaters that might have embarrassed you as kids are now a hip expression of artistry.

Young adults appreciate originality and craftsmanship, and they are an innovative bunch. They are doing amazing things with yarn.

Surprisingly, crocheting is even more popular than knitting.

It is ranked 3rd on the top 10 U.S. crafts list compiled by the Craft and Hobby Association, with 17.4 million devotees.

Knitting comes in at 9th place with 13 million needle fans.

What is interesting is people say they are drawn to yarn crafts because of the creativity according to a Craft Yarn Council survey of more than 5,000 knitters. Once they get into it, they say they realize it also helps with stress.

That is just one of the unexpected benefits of time spent knitting and crocheting. Here are four more benefits:

One of the beautiful aspects of yarn work is that you can do it alone or in a group. In fact, the opportunities to socialize seem to be driving the strong interest from young adults, who meet at coffee shops and office lunchrooms for a good stitch session, according to the yarn council.
