Relief is right here in the West Valley Dr. Kukurin was named a Top Chiropractor by the Consumers Research Council of America. He is listed in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare. With over 20 years of experience using acupuncture, chiropracticand science based nutritional therapies, the results produced by our methods have been featured on local TV newscasts, published in scientific journals, indexed in the National Library of Medicine and have been presented Knee Pain at medical conferences at Johns Hopkins and the Peripheral Nerve Society.

Diabetic Neuropathy, Peripheral Neuropathy Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, Plantar Fasciitis If you are suffering from lower back, buttocks and or leg pain or your feet or legs are cramping, numb or burning especially at night, you almost certainly have a condition which involves the nerves of the legs. The largest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve (pictured in red to the right), starts in the lower back, runs through the muscles of the buttocks and down to the tip of the toes. If this nerve gets irritated, you can experience really terrible pain anywhere along the course of the nerve. You may also experience burning, numbness and odd sensations in your muscles. Irritation of this nerve may produce severe cramping or crawling sensations in your muscles. Of course, your back and leg pain can be caused by a pinched nerve in your lower back. This can be from a vertebra that is out of place, it can be caused by a slipped disc or it can be caused by spinal stenosis or any combination of these problems. Each of these conditions, bad discs, spinal stenosis or displaced vertebrae have very different treatments. Knowing exactly why you have your back and leg troubles is absolutely essential for effective care.

Headaches, Vertigo, TMJ, Migraines, Sinus Headache Neck and Shoulder Pain, Pinched Nerves, Tennis Elbow and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Spinal Stenosis, Sciatica, Lower Back, Hip and Leg Pain

So how do you find results? The answer is called Integrative Neurology. Neurology is the study of the nerves. This allows us to diagnose tough nerve conditions like spinal stenosis, disc problems and neuropathy. What happens next truly separates our integrative neurology approach from anything else available to help correct lower back, hip, leg and foot problems. We have pioneered techniques to decompress nerves, but also use a number of natural substances that have been shown in recent scientific studies to help nerves re-grow and repair. There are no current drugs that can do this. But that’s not all. We combine special electrical stimulation techniques with acupuncture. A combination that has been shown to correct abnormal nerve function and promote nerve repair. There simply is no better or more comprehensive system for diagnosing and correcting the cause of spinal stenosis, neuropathy and other conditions that cause lower back, hip and leg pain and numbness. Together We Can Make a Difference...

“Go Green, Go God!” Welcome, to our April Issue. This month events worldwide will be celebrated in honor of Earth Day. For those looking to make a difference in the world – the biggest contribution one can give – is to honor God! Here are a few Bible verses to encourage you to “Go Green, Go God!”

Matthew 6:26-30 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

Genesis 2:15 And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. Deuteronomy 22:6 If a bird's nest chance to be before thee in the way in any tree, or on the ground, whether they be young ones, or eggs, and the dam sitting upon the young, or upon the eggs, thou shalt not take the dam with the young:

Deuteronomy 11:12 A land which the Lord thy God careth for: the eyes of the Lord thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year.

Jeremiah 12:4 How long shall the land mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? the beasts are consumed, and the birds; because they said, He shall not see our last end.

Isaiah 51:6 Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.

Jeremiah 2:7 And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land, and made mine heritage an abomination.

Deuteronomy 20:19 When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by forcing an axe against them: for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man's life) to employ them in the siege:

Revelation 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

Jeremiah 32:17 Ah Lord God! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:

Proverbs 27:18 Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured.

Numbers 35:33 So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are: for blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it.

Psalm 24:1 The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. Until next time,

God Bless You for Your Support! Here to serve,

For local students, a field trip with Audubon Arizona’s River Pathways program can be the sort of eye-opening experience that changes lives forever. Thanks to funding from sponsors like the APS Foundation, the River Pathways program has been inspiring a love of nature in urban youth and fostering a new generation of conservation leaders for eight years. This Audubon Arizona program takes a multi-faceted approach to conservation education. Through collaboration with the Bureau of Land Management and the Phoenix Union High School District (PUHSD), River Pathways delivers a custom-built classroom curriculum, followed by guided trips to the Agua Fria and Tonto National Parks. Each year, this unique program gives hundreds of underserved youth a chance to escape the concrete jungle and experience a new world. “The candid moments are what get me,” says River Pathways manager Steven Prager. He recalls a moment the night before a bird survey, when a 16-year-old student looked up at the sky and her eyes grew like blooming flowers. “She said ‘I’ve never seen stars before. I didn’t know that’s what the night sky looked like.’” The unique field trips provide practical experiences that build off the award-winning five-module curriculum. These classroom materials introduce students to Arizona’s riparian habitats and wildlife as well as local conservation issues, such as surveying techniques and the impact changing monsoons have on local birds.

“It’s taking an ambiguous concept and showing them someone working in the field, collecting real world data that actually affects management on the ground,” says Prager. “You can’t do that in a classroom.” Students from PUHSD high schools work alongside field biologists from both Audubon and the Bureau of Land Management to gather valuable habitat data on the yellow-billed cuckoo, a striking dove-sized bird with a beak colored like fresh honey. Their numbers have dwindled with the ongoing drought, which has slashed the number of insects that sustain them. “I don’t know if you can even call it a drought anymore,” says Prager. “It’s the new normal, and it’s an issue.” “People have become increasingly disconnected from nature while having an increasing impact on nature,” Prager says. The disconnect is showing as older generations retire, leaving important conservation positions vacant without an inspired younger generation to fill them. River Pathways has found a possible solution. Students who show an interest on field trips are invited on longer excursions, from which a group of interns are selected. It’s a great way for students to gain hands-on experience while still in high school, something that makes River Pathways unique from other conservation outreach programs, which usually target college students. For many, knowing about careers in conservation can completely change their post-graduation trajectory.

“You get groups that are very interested in learning about birds, learning about plants,” says Morgan Moore, communications coordinator for Audubon, “and that’s how you meet kids like Dan.” Dan Hite personifies what River Pathways is trying to do. What started in a high school classroom took him to riparian areas all around the state, and eventually into a full-time job with Audubon. “Audubon is giving students like me a chance at a career, and it all starts with a trip to the river,” says Hite.

High school students aren’t the only ones having fun. here’s a new conservation project every month, where volunteers can participate in anything from a river cleanup to helping relocate burrowing owls that have been displaced by urban construction. River Pathways is always looking for interested volunteers, young and old, to join in the effort to keep Arizona beautiful and healthy for not only wildlife, but for future generations. ringing people together to help the environment “ hat’s what Audubon does best,” says Moore.

River Pathways provides opportunities for young people to learn and explore, and thanks to grants from the government and donors like APS, it’s free, so all students get a chance to experience the majesty of Arizona.

Waste NOT

Distributing excess perishable food to the hungry in Maricopa County through various agencies The issue of hunger impacts Maricopa County heavily on a daily basis. According to latest USDA Report, in Arizona, 24.2 percent of children under 18 are food insecure, the third highest rate in the country. Essentially, that means one in four children go to bed hungry every night. Answering the call to combat hunger statistics, nonprofit Waste NOT serves those grappling with hunger, acting as a conduit by picking up and redistributing excess perishable food that would otherwise be thrown away. Individuals and families living in Waste NOT’s primary and secondary delivery areas in Maricopa County have a 36 percent poverty level, and struggle daily to meet basic requirements for food, clothing and housing. With the organization’s comprehensive redistribution program, food is picked up then delivered the same day to partner agencies that get it to those that need it most. In 2017, an estimated 3.2 million pounds of food was rescued and redistributed by Waste NOT. Christina La Porte has been with Waste NOT since 2015, serving a term as board vice president, and has now served as board president since 2017. “Growing up as someone who didn’t personally deal with food insecurity but knowing a family that did, the mission of Waste NOT really spoke to me right away,” La Porte explains. “Once I became aware how prevalent the hunger issue was here in Arizona, it was a no-brainer that I needed to get involved.”

Waste NOT does not store or warehouse food. Rather, each morning at 6:30 a.m., a fleet of six refrigerated trucks sets out across the Valley picking up nearly 10,000 pounds of excess food from restaurants, catering companies, resorts, food purveyors and stores. The organization essentially acts as a food “middle man” delivering food to partnering agencies that get it to targeted sections of the community. “Our Valley is very spread out and access to food is not as easy to come by if you don’t have access to a car or the money to get food,” says La Porte. “It all starts with the poverty level we still have here. There is a phrase in the hunger community that we have called ‘hunger deserts’ here in the Valley. Those are places where we know people are struggling to get food.” There are currently more than 100 agencies partnered with Waste NOT that distribute food either through food boxes or direct meal service. Agencies include food banks, schools, transitional housing facilities, churches, nonprofits and others that directly work with those facing hunger. Partnering agencies throughout Maricopa County include UMOM New Day Centers, World Harvest Ministry, The Salvation Army, Veterans for Veterans and St. Mary’s Food Bank.

La Porte explains, “From an eco-friendly standpoint, 30-40 percent of the food produced in the U.S. goes into the trash. It’s staggering and we work to rescue that food.” Food that is usable and still in code is picked up by Waste NOT from nearly 200 places that donate excess food like Target, Costco, Trader Joe’s, Atlasta Catering, Einstein Bros. Bagels, Small Cakes and special event venues. “We get calls daily from places that have excess food they didn’t use, especially after large-scale events like the Super Bowl,” says La Porte. “It can be like a big game of Tetris. While our trucks have their set pick-up routes, we have to figure out how to fit all the pick-ups into our day so that food doesn’t get wasted.” The general rule is that if unused perishable food will feed at least 25 people, Waste NOT will make arrangements to go pick it up with one of its refrigerated trucks. “We do have very personal relationships with the people that we deliver to,” finishes La Porte. “We have to. There is nothing more personal than giving people food to eat. That’s a daily need and we get to know people on a personal level when we’re providing sustenance. People will even walk out to our truck when they see us pull up. They are waiting for that food.” She also says that drivers understand what

each organization needs as it is never a “one-size-fits-all” situation. The targeted population served by Waste NOT includes men, women and children that fall under the umbrella of being hungry, low-income or indigent. Recipients of Waste NOT’s food include people of nearly all ethnicities. Approximately 50 percent of food recipients are women and children.

“Best medical facility and staff in the Valley, hands down, in my opinion. Highly recommend them if you need help due to chronic pain.” – Nancy K. “

” – Cindy E. “I’ve been competing in strength athletics since the age of 15 and have been competing at a professional level for the last 5 years. It wasn’t until 2014 that I needed to seek treatment for a patella tendon tear that I received while competing at the Commerce World’s Strongest Man in China. I had only heard about PRP treatments and the great benefits that it could have on one’s injuries - that’s when I found Dr. Lundquist at Active Life Physical Medicine & Pain Center in Avondale, Arizona. To this day, I have received Orthovisc injections to both knees along with PRP. I have also received PRP treatments for muscle tears and other tendon tears that I’ve obtained while competing at World’s Strongest Man. I feel that without Dr. Lundquist knowledge in sports medicine and PRP that I would have had to have surgery. The PRP treatments have played a huge role in keeping me at an elite level. I have and will continue to refer other athletes for their injuries to Dr. Lundquist.” — Jerry Pritchett, 2x World Strongest Man Finalist

Side Effects of Snoring Include Higher Risk for Alzheimer's By MS

Snoring may seem like a pesky yet minor problem, but it can be much more serious than some people know. Although snoring is a common problem among all ages and genders, the National Sleep Foundation says that men are twice as likely to snore as women, and snoring can worsen with age. The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, the NSF says anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may also contribute to snoring. Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse. While many people may think snoring is a mere nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. Over time, apnea can be associated with high blood pressure and increased risks of heart attack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer's disease as well. A new study published in the journal Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders. Richard Osorio, M.D., a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12 years earlier on average than those who didn't report any sleep-related breathing issues. Mild cognitive impairment often precedes dementia related to Alzheimer's disease. Some researchers believe snoring and sleep apnea may contribute to a buildup of the toxic protein in the brain called beta-amyloid, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. azhealthandliving.com |

Handling Major Life Changes In the 1960s, researchers Thomas Holmes and Richard Rahe studied the potential link between stressful life events and illness. After examining the medical records of thousands of patients, Holmes and Rahe discovered that there was a strong correlation between the two, ultimately developing the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale. Holmes and Rahe found that the death of a spouse, divorce and imprisonment were among the most stressful life events. But a person need not be widowed, recently divorced or newly imprisoned to be dealing stress sparked by a major life change. In fact, Holmes and Rahe found that marriage and retirement, two things many people would consider positive changes, were among the 10 most stressful life events. Change can be both exciting and frightening. Men and women facing major life changes like moving, switching careers or retiring can take the following tips to heart to make such transitions go as smoothly as possible.

Embrace the positive. Change has its advantages and disadvantages, but once men and women have decided to make changes, they should shift their focus toward the positive aspects of changing instead of worrying about the potential negatives. For example, if moving, focus on the adventure of living somewhere new and the opportunities to explore new places and make new friends. Accept your decision. Many people spend ample time mulling the pros and cons of major decisions before ultimately deciding to make major changes. People who decide to change careers may have spent years trying to decide if such a change was the right move. Once they have come to a decision and started the process of changing, whether it's giving a boss two weeks' notice or putting a house on the market, men and women should accept their decision and rest easier knowing they exercised their due diligence before making a final decision. 32 April 2018| azhealthandliving.com

Commit to your decision. Fully committing to change can increase your chances of making a successful transition. If moving to a new place, look for opportunities to connect with neighbors and other members of your new community. Parents can be active in parent organizations at their children's schools, while professionals can make a concerted effort to connect with co-workers in an effort to build strong relationships that can help their transition go smoothly. Maintain existing relationships. Professionals who are moving on to new companies and adults moving to new communities don't have to give up their relationships with current co-workers, neighbors and friends. Maintain contact with valued friends, neighbors and co-workers through channels such as social media, email or even the telephone. These people have likely been valuable resources and friends for years, and there's no reason you cannot continue to look to them for support and provide a source of support for them should they make a major change in the years ahead. Change is rarely easy, but men and women can take several steps to make transitions go smoothly.

Become a More Positive Person By MS

Learned optimism can be beneficial, helping to minimize feelings of depression, reduce stress levels and possibly improve physical health. According to a controlled study by Martin Seligman, Ph.D., and Gregory Buchanan, Ph.D., incoming university freshmen who participated in a workshop on cognitive coping skills reported fewer adverse physical problems over time and retained their physical and mental health better than those who were not in a coping skills group. This isn't the first evidence that optimism can have profound benefits. In a retrospective study of 34 healthy Hall of Fame baseball players who were on teams between 1900 and 1950, the known optimists lived longer. Survival rates for optimistic cancer patients are higher than for those who are hopeless. Optimists are also better equipped to handle stress and manage incidents that would incite anxiety. a learning experience and set a new plan to tackle. Although there are people who seem to be eternally optimistic, optimism is not an inherited trait. Changing perceptions and teaching oneself to be more optimistic is possible. Being an optimist doesn't mean turning a blind eye to problems or expecting everything to be easy. Being optimistic means learning from situations and recognizing that obstacles are there for a purpose. People hoping to become more optimistic can employ the following strategies:

Stop and embrace a positive event. Take time to mull over something good that has happened and take credit for your involvement. Mentally categorize this feeling for later when you need an example of the way optimism makes you feel. Surround yourself with optimists. Hang out with people who have a sunny view on life rather than those who bring you down or commiserate. Believe you can and will succeed. When approaching something new, don't set yourself up for failure. Go into it with the vision that you will thrive. Even if you don't succeed as planned, you can use the opportunity as

Erase negative phrases from your vocabulary. Using the

terms "I can't" or "It's impossible" is a recipe for failure.

Avoid complaints. Complaining does little more than make the person complaining feel even worse and could bring down the people around you. It won't solve anything. If you must get your feelings out, write them in a book and then tuck that book away. Take care of your body. You certainly can't be positive if you aren't feeling 100 percent. A well-balanced diet, routine exercise, sufficient rest, and finding time to go outdoors and get some fresh air and sunshine can help keep a person on a positive path. Get involved. Spending too much time isolated and alone can eventually degrade anyone's feelings of well-being. Take the time to meet with people outside of your family and engage in different activities that take your mind off stressors. Practice positive affirmations. Tell yourself good things. Receiving praise is something that can instantly put a person in a good mood. azhealthandliving.com | April 2018

Eco-Friendly Suggestions for Expectant Parents Expecting parents want their babies to be born healthy and stay healthy throughout their lives. The environment into which children are born can go a long way toward determining the health of newborns. Before the news that a child is on the way arrives, men and women may give little thought to the products they use around their homes. But the moment expecting parents learn their families are about to get bigger is a great time to begin reexamining certain practices around their homes and instituting some changes where necessary.

Reconsider lawn care practices. While past studies examining a link between pesticide exposure and birth defects were less than definitive, researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara examined birth certificate records of more than half a million single births in the agricultural region of the San Joaquin Valley between 1997 and 2001. They found that babies born to mothers with high pesticide exposure levels suffered a host of birth defects, including low birth weight. While such defects were only identifiable in cases where women were exposed to extraordinarily high levels of pesticides, parents can still exercise caution and avoid using pesticides when caring for their lawns. Purchase solid wood furniture. Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are chemicals that enter the air as gases from some solid or liquids. The New York State Department of Health notes that short-term exposure to high levels of certain VOCs can cause headaches, dizziness, drowsiness and nausea, among other symptoms. Long-term exposure to VOC has been found to adversely affect the nervous systems of laboratory animals. When purchasing furniture for their children's nurseries, expecting parents should avoid buying pressed wood products, which may contain the VOC formaldehyde. Instead, look for solid wood furniture made with a lowemitting finish. Make children's food as they begin eating solids. Children begin eating solid foods such as fruit and vegetables 34 April 2018

even before they have teeth. Rather than buying baby food from the store, parents can purchase organic fruits and vegetables that were grown without the use of pesticides. Residue from pesticides may stick to foods such as apples, peaches and pears. Parents who buy and then prepare organic foods are doing all they can to ensure their babies are not exposed to pesticides through their diets. Expecting parents can take several steps to make their homes as eco-friendly as possible before the births of their children.

Children often aspire to emulate their parents. Young boys who see their fathers shaving might reach for dad's shaving cream, while young girls may find their way into mom's closet in an effort to dress up like their mothers. Kids' curiosity may be similarly piqued when they see their parents going green. Parents who reduce, reuse and recycle are setting positive examples for their kids, who may inquire about the ways they can follow suit. While going green might not seem like the most kid-friendly activity, there are myriad ways for parents to involve children in their efforts to live ecofriendly lifestyles.

Donate clothing and toys. Children outgrow their clothing pretty quickly. Rather than discarding items kids can no longer wear, parents can take tots along to donation centers or thrift stores to show them how their clothes can be reused. Use this as an opportunity to teach kids how donating or recycling old items cuts down on the need to use natural resources to create new items. Bike to school. Stay-at-home parents, telecommuters or those who have time to escort their children to and from school can bike to school with their children. Teach them how biking in lieu of driving helps to conserve fuel and how such conservation benefits the planet. Visit the library. Young children who love to read can borrow books from the library rather than asking mom and dad to purchase their own copies at the bookstore. Explain how borrowing cuts down on the need for paper, which helps preserve forests and reduce waste. Spend more time in the great outdoors. Many parents want their children to spend more time outdoors and less time on the couch playing video games or watching television. Parents can make an effort to spend more time outdoors with their children engaging in fun activities like hiking, camping or fishing. Such excursions can instill a love and appreciation for nature in youngsters, and that love can compel them to a lifetime of protecting the planet and conserving its resources. azhealthandliving.com |

Eco-Friendly Outdoor Activities Months spent indoors avoiding the harsh weather outside makes winter a difficult season for people who love the great outdoors. While skiing, snowboarding and other winter sports make it possible to get some fresh air even when that air is frigid, many people find it difficult to consistently get outside when temperatures drop. That difficulty no doubt contributes to the popularity of spring, a season widely seen as a time of rebirth and rejuvenation. Time spent in the great outdoors is often its own reward. But taking measures to be eco-friendly while spending time outside can make such leisure time even more rewarding. People who want to get out and be eco-friendly at the same time can try the following activities.

Cycling: Cycling is a fun activity that's also great exercise and incredibly eco-friendly. While it's certainly an enjoyable leisure activity, cycling also can provide a great alternative to more popular modes of transportation like driving. According to Bay Area Bike to Work Day, a movement dedicated to promoting cycling as a means of commuting to and from work, drivers of small vehicles (those that get 35 miles per gallon of gas) who commute 10 miles per day, five days a week can expect to consume 68 gallons of gas in a typical year during their commutes. During those commutes, their vehicles will produce 0.7 tons of CO2. SUV drivers will consume nearly double that amount of fuel while their vehicles produce nearly three times as much CO2 emissions. Cycling to work won't consume any fuel or produce any emissions, and cyclists won't be forced to sit idly in rush hour traffic. Hiking: Hiking is another eco-friendly outdoor activity that can pay dividends for both the planet and the people who call it home. Lawmakers in towns and cities with thriving hiking communities may be encouraged to support legislation that preserves hiking trails and parks and prevent potentially harmful construction from taking place. And individuals can reap a number of benefits from hiking through the great outdoors. A study published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology found that outdoor exercise such as hiking can decrease feelings of tension, confusion, anger and depression. In addition, hiking provides a great fullbody workout that might appeal to people who have grown tired of more traditional gym-based fitness regimens.

Fishing: Fishing devotees tend to be wildly devoted to their craft, but one need not be an expert angler to enjoy fishing 36 April 2018 | azhealthandliving.com

and help the planet. According to the Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries, fishing supports wildlife and fisheries management. The DGIF notes that anglers help to set seasons and creel limits, ensuring that wildlife populations remain stable and even flourish. Many anglers also find fishing is a great form of stress relief that provides a peaceful escape from the daily grind.

Running/walking: In lieu of running or walking on a treadmill indoors, men and women can get outside and do their jogging or walking in the great outdoors. While treadmills are not necessarily big energy consumers, running or walking outdoors consumes no energy and provides a great opportunity to spend time outside, especially for professionals who spend most of their days in office buildings. The great outdoors comes calling for many people when temperatures begin to climb. Answering that call can be a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and improve your mood.

Make Mealtime More Eco-Friendly By MS

As environmentalists and eco-friendly ordinary Joes no doubt already know, there are myriad ways to go green. Even mealtime at home can be made considerably eco-friendlier with relatively little effort.

Stop hand-washing dishes. Men and women who dread having to hand wash their dishes after a nice meal have an ally in science. A study from researchers in Europe found that people who hand washed place settings for 12 people used as much as 27 gallons of water, while washing the same amount of place settings in a dishwasher required just 4 gallons of water. So instead of standing over a sink and washing dishes by hand each night, men and women can simply load up the dishwasher, making sure only to run it when it's full so even less water is wasted. Avoid the stove when possible. Empty nesters, couples without children or single men and women who want to save energy come mealtime can use toaster ovens in lieu of traditional stoves when preparing small meals. According to EnergyStarÂŽ, toaster ovens consume between one-third to one-half the amount of energy as conventional electric ovens when cooking small meals, making them a far ecofriendlier option for men and women accustomed who typically cook small meals for one or two people. Shop with reusable shopping bags. Cooks know that great meals begin at the grocery store, so there's no reason why eco-friendly cooking cannot begin there as well. Estimates suggest that as many as 100 billion plastic bags are used in the United States alone each year. Environment Massachusetts reports that such bags are used for an average of 12 minutes, even though their life expectancy is as high as 1,000 years. By relying on reusable cloth shopping bags instead of single-use plastic bags, shoppers can dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of cooking their own meals. azhealthandliving.com | April 2018

Have you noticed tiny veins spreading out across one or both of your legs Have they gotten larger, bluer, and more painful over time Well, these are called varicose veins and they could be more dangerous than they actually look. If you’ve been putting off varicose vein treatment, here are a few tips you should know. Varicose Veins Are Not Just a Cosmetic Concern aricose veins occur when the valves inside of the veins are damaged and or weakened. These valves have a ob to do, and that is to move blood to the heart. nce they weaken, the blood can back up and pool in the vein. These pools can create painful swelling and aching legs and even more serious side effects. When blood doesn’t flow properly, clots can and may develop. Typically, these clots may not life-threatening at the moment, but they may be an underlying sign of a more serious problem down the road. These veins may look ugly and cause painful swelling, but you shouldn’t brush them off as a cosmetic issue. Consider varicose vein treatment to save your future health. They Can Affect Anyone Anyone can develop varicose veins, but it tends to be very common in women. ore and more men are also becoming at risk too. or example, if your occupation requires you to stand for long periods of time such as bartending or nursing you might be more susceptible to developing these painful and ugly veins. individuals meeting specific criteria for vision

Q. Is temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) related to sleep-disordered breathing?

A. A hernia occurs when an abdominal organ loss that cannot be corrected with glasses, A. Temporomandibular joint disorder or other tissue has abnormally protruded through the abdominal wall cavity. They may cause little to no pain at first. A hernia can be in your groin, on your abdomen, or associated with a previous scar. A bulge or hernia that is associated with redness, nausea, or severe pain can mean a strangulated hernia. A strangulated hernia is always a dangerous condition in which the blood supply to the hernia and to its contents is cut off. It must be addressed immediately before sepsis sets in, which can lead to death. A hernia will not go away on its own and will not get better. Delaying treatment can only increase your risk for strangulation and increase your risk for complications. A strangulated hernia will require a traditional open surgery, a 3-5 day hospital stay, as well as a prolonged recovery time. Laparoscopic surgery is best instituted early on, where healing, recovery, and postoperative pain are all significantly improved over traditional open surgery. A laparoscopic procedure allows for smaller incisions, quicker recovery, less pain and no hospital stay. Typically, the procedure can be done through three micro incisions in less than an hour.

contact lenses or surgery. It can be defined by either the level of central vision or peripheral vision, as measured with a visual field test using the patient’s best visual correction with glasses or contacts. Legal blindness applies if vision in the better eye is worse than 20/100 or if less than 20 degrees of visual field remains.

“Legal blindness” is a legal term and does not always reflect functional vision. Most people with legal blindness have some level of remaining vision; however, many do struggle with activities like reading, seeing signs and faces, or navigating from place to place. Those with difficulty seeing to perform daily activities should seek evaluation with a low vision optometrist to determine if low vision devices or training can improve their quality of life. (TMD) can be very painful and is often accompanied by headaches, toothaches and more bizarre symptoms. Sleep-disordered breathing symptoms can both overlap and mimic those of sleep-disordered breathing. Many dentists consider temporomandibular joint problems to be somewhat of a gray area because the conditions associated with its complex task of permitting the movement of the jaw without friction is sometimes difficult to define and even more complicated to treat.

Some dentists believe that sleep-disordered breathing is partly the existence of a temporomandibular joint problem and partly the manifestation of a sleep-disordered breathing problem. The simplest way to understand the connection: the bruxism (teeth grinding) or jaw shifting associated with sleep-disordered breathing (occurring when sleeping patients are unconsciously trying to find the best possible positioning of their airway) may inflame the temporomandibular joint or exacerbate a problem with the joint that was pre-existing. Headaches, a clicking jaw, malocclusion (misalignment of teeth), and condyle and disc displacement are all associated with sleep-disordered breathing. However, these symptoms often occur in patients with sleepdisordered breathing as well. Research in the journal Sleep determined in 1993 that nocturnal headaches may be caused by temporomandibular joint disorder, or triggered by sleep-disordered breathing - “with very similar clinical manifestations but very different therapeutic implications.” If you have temporomandibular joint disorder, I suggest you ask your dentist to screen you for sleep-disordered breathing.

variety of disease and injury. However, each exam accomplishes this by very different technologies. Often times, people get these two confused because the equipment looks similar. CT is the acronym used by most healthcare professionals, referring to computerized tomography. You may have heard of another term, ‘CAT scan’ (computed axial tomography) for this exam. Series of x-rays are used together to produce cross-sectional images by moving a table through a donut-shaped gantry. These images are reconstructed in several planes and create 3D images. CT can perform a scan of most of the body in only one breath hold. CT evaluates organs, blood vessels and bones. Radiopaque contrast may be used intravenously to highlight certain structures.

Alternately, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) uses a powerful magnet and radiofrequency pulses to produce very detailed images. Different pulse sequences are utilized to delineate soft tissue structures such as organs, the brain, spinal cord, muscles and ligaments. Due to certain risk factors, patients are screened for MRI compatibly. Recent technological advances have made MRI much faster and the architecture of the bore larger, to allow for more patient comfort. A gadolinium-based contrast may be used, depending on the exam and diagnosis. Referring doctors will weigh the pros and cons of each modality, and determine which is most appropriate for your diagnosis.

What is kyphoplasty and am I a Can you tell me more about dry candidate? eye? Sometimes as we age, our bones become thin, resulting in osteoporosis. When this happens, the vertebral bodies that make up the spinal column become fragile and weak. ompression fractures can result from this, causing increased pain and debilitation. In addition, these fractures create a forward curvature in your mid back area that pushes you to lean forward, changing your center of gravity. A procedure available that can help correct this, and almost instantly reduce the pain you are experiencing if the compression fracture is new, is yphoplasty. yphoplasty is an innovative way to improve pain from the compression fracture and promotes restoration of the vertebral body. This is now available to be done in the outpatient setting, if your physician feels that you are a good candidate. nder -ray guidance, the compression fractures are identified, and through a needle, a balloon is inflated and medical grade cement is placed. Once the cement has solidified, often the pain will be reduced and function and mobility will be restored. This is a fairly low-risk procedure that can help dramatically improve your quality of life. In addition to treating osteoporotic compression fractures, it can be utilized for traumatic compression fractures. A physician knowledgeable in this area can discuss with you if you are a candidate or not.

What is a Threadlift?

Dry eye, officially known as keratocon unctivitis sicca (ker-uh-toe-kununk-tih- -tis SI -uh), is one of the most common and debilitating chronic ocular health conditions. There are two broad categories of dry eye when the body isn’t producing enough tears (aqueous deficient dry eye) and when the body is producing enough tears, but it isn’t able to maintain the tears on the eyes for a long enough period of time (evaporative dry eye).

Threadlifts are a quick in-office procedure that will redistribute a person’s facial volume and skin back to a more youthful appearance. Threads can be used on the face, neck or body to increase collagen and improve appearance. Threads give you an instant improvement with the mechanical lift and a long-term benefit of collagen creation. The newest generation of threads, such as PDO and Silhouette Instalift, are both dissolvable over time, thus minimizing complications of “old threadlifts.”

oth condition types are exacerbated by living in the Arizona desert climate. Dry eye can be due to age-related physiological changes, a side effect of medications, or in con unction with contact lens use. Symptoms vary widely and can range from transient blurred vision or light sensitivity to significant ocular discomfort and eye pain. Sometimes dry mouth may also be present. This most often occurs in postmenopausal women and may indicate a condition called S ogren’s syndrome.

PDO Thread (Polydioxanone) is a suture material that has been around for almost 30 years and will dissolve completely in four to six months. The material is broken down by the body, stimulating new healthy collagen. PDO threads are inserted with needles in a matter of minutes. There is no incision or anchoring necessary, making it a fast and easy in-office procedure with no down time. Different types of threads allow for the actual lifting of skin or sutures are placed in a crosshatch fashion to tighten and smooth.

Silhouette threads are an excellent option when a little more aggressive lift is necessary. The thread material is made of Poly-L-Lactic Acid, a biostimulator, which you may be familiar with as this is the same product of Sculptra Aesthetic. The threads have bi-directional cones for a greater “grab” of tissue. This allows for a stronger lift. if staying on your employer plan is the best decision or even if this option is available to you.

Twenty is an important number in this situation. If your employer has 20 or more employees, the group insurance will remain in the first payer position and you will have the option to remain on the plan after turning 65. In most cases you would want to initiate your Medicare Part A (Hospital) benefit while remaining on the employer plan. If you or a spouse has contributed into Medicare through payroll deductions for 40 quarters (10 years) there would be no cost associated with Part A. You could however delay enrolling in Part B (Medical) and postpone paying the monthly premium of $134 or more (determined by adjusted gross income) by staying on the employer plan. Other things to consider when making this decision are: How much will you contribute toward the monthly premium? Is there a deductible, co-insurance or copays you are responsible for? If a spouse is also covered will he or she lose these benefits if you opt out? These questions can be answered by contacting your HR department or benefits administrator. If an employer has less than 20 employees, Medicare would automatically be in the first payer position, you would then be required to enroll in Medicare A and B as well as Part D (prescription drug plan), eliminating a possible future penalty. Many small employer plans in a secondary payer position will cover very little or nothing at all once employees become eligible for Medicare.

How Drivers Can Make Road Trip Season More Eco-Friendly Many drivers anxiously await the arrival of spring when they can rev their engines and enjoy the burgeoning greenscapes synonymous with the season. Though the colors of fall foliage might be more closely associated with road trips, many drivers enjoy the first few warm days of spring when they get a chance to hit the open road with their windows down for the first time in months. Driving is not always the eco-friendliest activity. However, there are various ways to enjoy spring road trips without compromising the environment.

Do not idle your vehicle. When engines are running but cars are not moving, this is referred to as "idling." It's hard to blame drivers for idling their vehicles in winter when many motorists try to warm up their engines and their vehicles' interiors so their morning commutes are as comfortable as possible. Idling cars might not be moving, but they are still burning fuel, meaning drivers who routinely idle their vehicles are adversely affecting fuel efficiency. It's also important to note that idling is no longer necessary in modern vehicles. That's because the electronic fuel injection systems in today's cars require just a few seconds to get full oil pressure throughout the engine. Such systems were not present in older vehicles. Take it easy on the road. Road trips tend to be more enjoyable and are certainly safer when drivers take their time and don't rush to their destination. And driving slowly happens to be eco-friendlier as well. According to the online automotive resource Edmunds.com, gently gaining speed is much more fuel-efficient than accelerating quickly. Always obey speed limits and avoid quickly accelerating when stoplights turn green.

Empty the trunk. During winter, many drivers understandably carry some extra items in their trunk to account for inclement weather. Keeping ice scrapers, extra coolant or even a snow shovel in the trunk might make sense for drivers who live in regions that routinely encounter heavy snowfall. When spring arrives, drivers should remove any unnecessary items from their trunks. Such items will increase the weight of the vehicle, thereby reducing its fuel efficiency. Athletes and outdoors enthusiasts should also remove golf bags and sporting equipment from their trunks when taking trips where such items won't be needed.

Don't top off at the gas pump. Many drivers, especially 48 April 2018 | azhealthandliving.com

those on road trips who want to avoid extra tops at the filling station, top off their gas tanks when nozzles shut off automatically. Such a practice is harmful to the planet and may not be doing your vehicle any favors, either. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes gasoline needs some extra room in gas tanks to expand. Without that extra room, the gas may evaporate into the vehicle's vapor collection system, adversely affecting emissions and potentially damaging the vehicle. Motorists can employ several simple strategies to make spring road trip season eco-friendlier.

Resolve to Wear Clothes That Fit Many people struggle to find the right size clothing, shoes and undergarments. It's a situation that affects both men and women. Consider these facts: · Research by menswear retailer Jacamo found 22 percent of British men are wearing the wrong size clothes or shoes. · A recent international study done by Swiss lingerie company Triumph found that, of the 10,000 women polled, 64 percent are wearing the incorrect bra size. · The average shoe size is up about two sizes since the 1970s. Yet, at least one-third of men and half of women are buying the wrong size, according to Long Tall Sally, a U.K.based apparel and footwear retailer that gets almost half its sales from North America. Many people today purchase their clothing off the rack and never step inside a tailor's shop unless it is to have formal clothing adjusted for special occasions. People generally give little thought to taking out the measuring tape and getting a refresher on their measurements - despite changes in their body weights. Plus, many do not recheck their shoe sizes, likely because shoe stores are mostly self-service and the number of Brannock devices, or the standard foot measuring tool for the worlds footwear industry, are dwindling in retail centers. Bra measurements are even harder to come by, no doubt thanks in part to the nature of getting measured in such an intimate area of the body. But considering undergarments set the foundation for all clothing worn on top, this is one of the more important measurements to verify. Enlist the help of a friend or family member to make measurements go more smoothly. · Women can measure their bust around the center of the breasts and back.

· Sleeves are measured from the middle of the back of the neck over the top of the shoulder and down to the point where the sleeve will end. · Men should measure a collar around the base of their necks where a shirt collar would sit. · Hip size should be taken around the fullest part of the hips and buttocks when feet are placed together while standing. · Inseam is measured from the top of the inner thigh to the ankle.

· Chest measurements are taken as high up as possible on the widest part of the chest. For women, this will occur directly under the breasts.

· Measure shoe size while standing in stocking feet. Pay attention to shoe width as well.

· The waist is measured at the narrowest point width-wise, usually just above the navel.

Knowing body measurements can make clothes shopping easier and ensure people are wearing the right sizes.

Should You Get a Nose Job? Dr. Deepak Raj Dugar, www.scarlessnose.com

Young people love their nose jobs. In fact, rhinoplasty is far and away the No. 1 cosmetic-surgical procedure performed for patients who are ages 13 to 19, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Teenagers aren’t the only ones intrigued by the idea of changing the way their noses look, though. It’s also in the top five procedures for people of all ages. But that said, is a nose job right for everyone who wants one? Not necessarily. Here are a few considerations to take into account before deciding on a nose job:

Nasal maturity. Although young patients might want rhinoplasty, it’s important to wait until the nose is ready. You don’t want to have surgery and then the nose continues to grow later. Generally, when someone reaches about age 15, the nose cartilage and bones are mature. Emotional maturity. It’s important that the patient understands the implications of the surgery and understands the risk and purpose as well. If they do understand those things, then they are ready to move ahead with the surgery. But if they don’t have a good understanding, perhaps they should wait. Realistic expectations. Patients need to realize what can and can’t be done with a nose job, and what they should expect to see in the mirror when the surgery and the recovery time are over. When the patient thinks you are delivering one thing and the surgeon thinks he or she is delivering another, that’s when most problems happen. Body dysmorphia. About one in 50 people suffer from body dysmorphic disorder, a psychiatric condition that causes them to agonize constantly over real or perceived flaws with their bodies, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. Nearly everyone has such concerns at some time, but people with body dysmorphia can’t shake their negative feelings, and plastic surgeons need to counsel them. If someone’s problem with their appearance is strictly psychological, cosmetic surgery isn’t going to solve things and they sometimes end up getting repeat surgeries. azhealthandliving.com |

A Hollywood Hit Maker

Actress. Director. Producer. Business mogul. Elizabeth Banks, 44, is one of Hollywood’s top paid actresses while also being one of Tinseltown’s most sought after directors. But, her success isn’t an overnight phenomenon —it comes from years of hard work in the industry. “I was a frustrated actress,” Banks told The New York Times in December 2017. “I was bored.” “Now she is busy. Brownstone Productions, the 10-year-old company she started with her husband, Max Handelman, has development deals with nearly every major studio, and projects percolating for film and TV,” the article continues. “She’s a founder of WhoHaha, an online platform for female comedians. And she’s still performing, most recently playing herself as Larry David’s girlfriend on ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm.’ ...Brownstone developed and produced the ‘Pitch’ franchise.” As one of the industry’s top actresses, Banks has starred in the “Spider-Man” trilogy, the “Pitch Perfect” franchise (she directed “Pitch Perfect 2”), “Power Rangers,” “The LEGO Movie,” “The Hunger Game” series, and more. She also has starred on TV shows “30 Rock,” “Scrubs,” “Modern Family,” and more. “Cut to 2015, the banner year in which Banks achieved a kind of Hollywood trifecta,” cites a Vanity Fair article. “As an actress, she won extravagant praise for her role in the Brian Wilson biopic, ‘Love & Mercy’; she also took Effie Trinket out for a final spin in ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay—Part 2.’ As a 52

producer, Brownstone Productions signed a two-year, first-look contract with Universal and is also working on two projects with Lionsgate—‘Heist Society’ and ‘White Girl Problems’—as well as projects with other studios. And as both a producer and the director of ‘Pitch Perfect 2,’ Banks watched her movie, in its first weekend, not only out gross the domestic lifetime total of ‘Pitch Perfect’ but have the highest-grossing live-action filmmusical opening ever. Money talks, of course: ‘Pitch Perfect 2’ has made $287.1 million worldwide. The Vanity Fair article continues: “But more than that, the success of this sequel, which Brownstone developed from scratch, was proof that the first ‘Pitch Perfect’ was ‘not a one-off,’ says Banks. ‘When you do it twice, that’s meaningful. You actually knew what you were doing and there was design to what you did.’” Banks’ roots are fairly middle class and far away from the glitz and glamor of Hollywood. “She grew up with three siblings in working-class Pittsfield, Mass., where her father, a GE worker, was pink-slipped numerous times. At one point during her childhood, when her dad was working three shifts building transformers, the only time she saw him was when her mom, a bank clerk, would pile the kids in the car and drive to the plant so that the whole family could eat dinner together in the parking lot,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Her initiation into acting happened the normal way — she tried out for ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ in high school, got the part and ended up studying theater arts at Penn (graduating magna cum laude in 1996) and earning a master's at the American Conservatory Theater in 1998.” In addition to her fast paced career, Banks has been married to Max Handelman since 2003 and has two sons. Networking Tips for Working Professionals Networking plays an integral role in professional growth. Men and women who can nurture relationships within their fields are more likely to be in tune with what's going on in their professions, and a network of fellow professionals can help men and women advance their careers. But networking often falls by the wayside for today's busy professionals, many of whom simply can't find the time in their hectic schedules to foster relationships with professional colleagues. But the benefits of networking are numerous, and it behooves men and women to make an effort to build and maintain strong professional networks.

Recognize the benefits of networking. Networking not only benefits individuals but also the companies those individuals own or work for. While many people view networking as a means to one day finding a new job, networking is much more than that. When you foster a professional relationship, the other person in that relationship will be quick to think of you when they need a given service or are asked for a referral. That can benefit business owners' bottom lines, but even men and women who don't own a business can benefit, as their bosses will no doubt recognize the role they played in bringing in new business. Make networking a priority. Once professionals recognize that networking is about more than just building a web of contacts who can help them find their next job, they can begin to prioritize networking so it can help them in their existing jobs. Make an effort to keep in touch with current and previous clients and any other contacts made over the years. Something as simple as an email to catch up or an inquiry to see if there's anything fellow professionals need will help you stay on their minds, which can help you bring in new business or learn about new opportunities down the road. Maintaining and building a professional network does not always require a lot of work, as even seemingly small gestures can pay big dividends if men and women prioritize such efforts. 56 April 2018 | azhealthandliving.com

Revisit your network from time to time. A network is only beneficial if it remains current. Keep track of the professionals in your network so you know when and where to reach them should you need to do so. A professional networking site such as LinkedIn is a great way to stay on top of what your network is up to, and such a site also is a valuable tool when you want to update your network with any new information about yourself. Revisit your network a few times each year, updating with any new information so you aren't left scrambling for email addresses or phone numbers when the time comes to get back in touch with your contacts. Avoid networking only when you need something. You can likely name a few of your fellow professionals who only seem to contact you when they want something. You don't want to earn a similar reputation among your own contacts, so don't forget to make periodic contact with your colleagues even when you don't need anything. A simple email to catch up and to offer some unsolicited help if any is needed can be enough to prevent you from earning a reputation as a me-first contact and put you in a positive light that can benefit you throughout your career. Networking can easily be seen in a negative light. But professionals who network the right way will find that their efforts pay dividends for themselves, their companies and even their professional colleagues.

Go Green in Your Lawn & Garden This Spring Spring is a season of rejuvenation. As the cold days of winter drift away, spring blooms begin to sprout and grass regains its lush green look. Green is certainly a color that's synonymous with spring. Gardening enthusiasts can find a way to make spring even more green by embracing several eco-friendly gardening practices as they bring their lawns and gardens back to life in the months to come.

Create a compost pile. Composting is an eco-friendly way to enrich lawns and gardens. Composting helps to conserve water because compost promotes moisture retention in soil, reducing homeowners' need to water their lawns and gardens while also helping them to save money on their water bills. Composting also helps homeowners avoid the need to use potentially harmful chemical fertilizers because compost is a natural, slow release fertilizer. In addition, according to Canada's Green Action Centre, compostable materials make up 40 percent of residential waste. So, composting can dramatically reduce the amount of waste homeowners ultimately send to landfills. Replace gas-powered mowers with reel lawn mowers. Reel mowers may seem like relics from simpler times, but today's reel mowers, while just as eco-friendly as their predecessors, are unlike those of yesteryear. According to the Planet Natural Research Center, an online resource for organic gardeners, gas-powered engines emit more than 10 times the hydrocarbons per amount of gas burned than auto engines. But reel mowers are fuel-free and less expensive than gas-powered mowers. Planet Natural also notes that reel mowers snip grass like scissors, leaving finer trimmings that can serve as nourishing, weed-deterring mulch for yards.

Water at the right times of day. Homeowners who water their lawns and gardens at the right time of day can help the planet and reduce their energy bills. As spring gradually gives way to summer, temperatures typically rise. Watering during the coolest times of the day means less water will be lost to evaporation, ensuring water-needy soil will get all it needs to help lawns and gardens thrive. Early morning watering before the sun reaches its midday peak and/or evening watering as the sun is setting are typically great times to water lawns and gardens, rather than when temperatures are at their hottest. Use a rain barrel. Rain barrels provide another great way to 58 April 2018 | azhealthandliving.com

conserve water while tending to lawns and gardens. Rain barrels collect and store rainwater from roofs and downspouts, keeping water from washing into sewage systems where it can't be put to good use. Water collected in rain barrels can be used in various ways. Many homeowners can use water from rain barrels to water their lawns, gardens and houseplants, saving money on their water bills along the way. Spring gardening season provides a great opportunity for lawn and garden enthusiasts to embrace a variety of ecofriendly practices that can save them money and protect the planet.

Addicted Seniors a Serious Problem: Opioid use Among the Older Population The public is quickly learning that drug abuse goes beyond the illegal substances that are purchased on the street. Abuse of drugs extends to the prescription medications sitting in many medicine cabinets. While teenagers and young adults may be the first to be stereotyped as prescription drug abusers, seniors may have unwittingly become mixed up in one of the most misused prescription classes: opioid pain relievers. The problem of opioid abuse has been a growing issue for years. The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimates 2.1 million people in the United States suffer from substance abuse of opioid pain relievers. Older patients are increasingly and repeatedly prescribed opioids to address chronic pain from arthritis, cancer and other problems that become more apparent as people age. Data from U.S. Medicare recipients found that, in 2011, roughly 15 percent of seniors were prescribed an opioid after being discharged from the hospital. When followed up on three months later, 42 percent were still taking the medication. Fast forward to 2015, and almost one-third of all Medicare patients were prescribed opioid painkillers by their physicians, says AARP. The Canadian Institute for Health Information says adults between the ages of 45 and 64 and seniors age 65 and older had the highest rates of hospitalizations due to opioid poisoning over the past 10 years. AARP also indicates nearly 3 million Americans age 50 or older have started to take painkillers for reasons beyond what their doctors prescribed. Experts from the Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing warn that dependence on opioids can set in after just a few days. Discomfort and side effects can occur when the pills are stopped. Opioids can decrease pain at first, but many people find they can be less effective over time. As a result, patients need to take greater amounts. Although many people can take opioids in small doses for short periods of time without problems, many find themselves overcome by a troubling addiction. 62 April 2018

| azhealthandliving.com

Some doctors prefer not to use opioids as a first line of treatment for chronic pain. Another possible risk of opioids among seniors is that the medication can cause disorientation that may lead to falls and fractures. The senior care resource A Place for Mom also says that prescription narcotics may increase risk of respiratory arrest. What's more, an older body may not absorb and filter medicines as effectively as younger bodies can. This means that older adults might become addicted to or have side effects from a prescription drug at a lower dose. Seniors concerned about opioids can discuss other options with their doctors, such as nonopioid medications and alternative therapies for pain management, like massage or acupuncture. If opioids are prescribed, ask for the lowest dose and don't exceed the time frame for taking the medicine. Only take the pills when absolutely necessary, and never mix opioids with alcohol or other substances.

Sleep Loss Can Affect Memory in Seniors By MS

Poor sleep can leave people feeling groggy, disoriented, depressed, and not up for facing the day. And now there's new evidence that insomnia can contribute to memory loss and forgetfulness among the elderly. A study - the first of its kind - unveiled a new link between lack of sleep and memory loss. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley found that during sleep important brain waves are produced that play key roles in storing memories. These waves transfer the memories from the hippocampus to the prefrontal cortex, a portion of the brain where long-term information is stored. Sleep loss can cause the memories to remain in the hippocampus and not reach the long-term storage area, found researchers. This can contribute to forgetfulness and difficulty remembering simple details, such as names. Seniors are frequently plagued with deteriorated sleeping patterns that lead to shallow sleep and more awakenings, says those at the University of California. This can contribute to the prevention of memories being saved by the brain each evening. This is not the first-time sleep and brain health have been measured. A 2008 University of California, Los Angeles study discovered that people with sleep apnea showed tissue loss in brain regions that help store memories. WebMD says imaging and behavioral studies show the role sleep plays in learning and memory and that lack of sleep can impair a person's ability to focus and learn efficiently. Combine this with the necessity of sleep to make those brain wave connections for memories to be stored, and the importance of deep sleep is apparent.

the brain. This is corroborated by data published in the journal Neurology. Getting deep sleep is important for reducing these proteins.

Another study, published in the journal Brain, conducted by doctors at Washington University in St. Louis, linked poor sleep with early onset of dementia, especially Alzheimer's disease. Although poor sleep does not cause Alzheimer's, it may increase brain amyloid proteins believed to be intrinsic to the disease. When slow-wave deep sleep is disrupted, levels of amyloid can grow and clog

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recognizes the difficulties elderly people may have in regard to sleep. The quality of deep sleep among older adults is often 75 percent lower than it is in younger people. Doctors can be cognizant of how sleep impacts memory and the onset of dementias and discuss insomnia treatment options with their patients. azhealthandliving.com | April 2018

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, red lights called enemies, caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith and a driver named Jesus—you will make it to a place called success.” – Author Unknown
