elcome to our Aging Gracefully Issue. Life is too short and precious, unfortunately many people live as if they don’t seem to know this, until an unexpected illness or event occurs

—and although it is never too late to be a good steward and show gratitude – special moments and opportunities can be missed! The Bible teaches that old age is a blessing from God.

Proverbs 9:10-11 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.

Proverbs 3: 13,15-16 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.

Philippians 3:20-21 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

1 Kings 3:14 And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days.

Psalm 103:5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.

Joel 1:2-3 Hear this, ye old men, and give ear, all ye inhabitants of the land. Hath this been in your days, or even in the days of your fathers? Tell ye your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation.

2 Corinthians 4:16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. Until next time,

fferin a messa e and supporti e community to those li in ith mental health challen es Queen Creek resident Colby McMahon has come up with an entirely unique approach to the stigma that often faces people that live with mental health challenges and depression. He is also in a unique position to do so because he has also struggled with those issues in the past. Taking a proactive approach, he has put forth a positive spin to support those living with mental illness and helping to raise awareness. McMahon has struggled with severe anxiety and depression. “I’ve always had anxiety, even as a young kid, and I was hyper and had ADHD,” McMahon explains. “I was seeing a psychiatrist and he diagnosed me with major depressive disorder.” He says that the psychiatrist treated him with medication, but it made matters worse. “My senior year in high school I had my first panic attack and it was the worst thing that had ever happened,” says McMahon. After that, he was not able to drive and wasn’t able to eat much. He adds that this time in his life was after his father and grandfather had passed away and he was on a bad path that included taking drugs and alcohol to suppress his emotions. The future though is looking up for McMahon and he is optimistic. “Looking back, it was a blessing in disguise His depression has gotten better and, although he still and now I’m doing so much more with my life,” he says. stresses out about potentially getting additional panic attacks, he is coping well. He now chooses not to take traditional psychiatric medication and has found relief seeing the naturopaths at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine. McMahon most recently studied at Grand Canyon University and just obtained his real estate license in efforts to help fund the remainder of his college education. After doing quite a bit of research, McMahon wanted to channel positive energy into the area of mental health. “I started Soothe Apparel last year and I want to pursue that because it’s my passion and I deal with mental health issues on a daily basis,” McMahon says. “I want to be able to help other people and connect with other people dealing with that as well.” r

HEART OF THE COMMUNITY

By Janelle Tapphorn

The Johnjay and Rich #LoveUp Foundation Helping children in Arizona’s foster care find hope and forever families With more than 14,000 children in Arizona’s foster care system and a large number of children nearing age 18 who will soon be aging out of the system with nowhere to turn, the Johnjay and Rich #LoveUp Foundation is dedicated to chipping away at the rising need one child at a time. Foster care is a temporary living situation for children when they are removed from their biological parents’ care due to abuse, neglect, unsafe living environment, death of biological parents or voluntary placement. The Johnjay and Rich #LoveUp Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded by nationally syndicated radio personalities Johnjay Van Es and Rich Berra in response to the growing gap between displaced children in foster care and forever families. #LoveUp Foundation works closely with the Arizona Department of Child Safety (ADCS) and other foster organizations in the community like Arizona Friends of Foster to help displaced children secure a path to a healthier, more successful future achieving permanent family connections. By spreading the word, #LoveUp Foundation hopes more families will consider fostering and adoption. Berra says, “It is our responsibility as a community to help support children in foster care. That’s what #LoveUp is all about.” Kristin Hower, executive director of Johnjay and Rich #LoveUp Foundation, explains, “Because of our founders’ far and wide reaching voices on 104.7 KISS FM in Phoenix and 17 additional markets nationwide, we are able to more easily promote our mission of helping the neediest children in our community, especially those in our state’s foster care system. Our vision is that every child in foster care finds a loving forever home full of love and opportunity.”

September 2018 | azhealthandliving.com

Through private and corporate donations and sponsorships, community grants and proceeds from the sale of #LoveUp T-shirts, the foundation has raised thousands of dollars to support foster organizations in ways that go above and beyond their typical capabilities. Impactful #LoveUp Foundation programs include: • Foster Care Events: #LoveUp Foundation believes every child should know what it’s like to go to a baseball game, visit a working farm, attend the State Fair or go to a movie on opening night. Each year the foundation spreads hope by creating memorable experiences for foster children. • Children’s Heart Gallery: In 2014, the #LoveUp Foundation was chosen by ADCS to help maintain the Children’s Heart Gallery (CHG)—an online photographic and biographic portal and mobile photographic exhibit that showcases children in the foster care system who are available for adoption and in need of a forever home. Six times a year, the foundation invites foster children to receive haircuts, new clothes and a professional photography session for their inclusion in the Heart Gallery; www.childrensheartgallery.org. “We are incredibly grateful to our listeners and sponsors who have embraced the #LoveUp movement,” Van Es comments. Photos Courtesy of #LoveUp Foundation

The #LoveUp Foundation is compassionately engaged in changing lives with many exciting upcoming events including: • Children’s Heart Gallery photoshoot events in Phoenix and Tucson this fall. • “Shop and Sole,” a partnership between Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall and #LoveUp to collect 1,000 pairs of shoes during September. • #LoveUp at Arizona State Fair: The second annual event to send hundreds of foster children to the fair in October.

• Christmas Wish 2018: For the 17th year in a row, Johnjay and Rich will grant Christmas Wishes to needy and deserving families during December. Families can be nominated at www.loveupfoundation.org. By supporting the #LoveUp Foundation, you’re not only helping with the immediate needs of permanency for our most vulnerable, but also actively providing critical blocks of support to build a better community. The easiest way to support the Johnjay and Rich #LoveUp Foundation is to buy #LoveUp shirts at www.loveupshirt.org.

• #LoveUp at the Princess: The second annual “Christmas at the Princess” holiday party at the Scottsdale Fairmont Princess Resort for more than 500 children and guardians. • #LoveUp Christmas Toy Drive: In partnership with Banner Children’s Thunderbird, Hope Community Services and Glendale Chamber of Commerce, #LoveUp will begin in October to collect toys, with a goal of 8,000, for foster and needy children.

Signs & Symptoms Cancer claims the lives of millions of people across the globe every year. According to the World Health Organization, cancer was responsible for 8.8 million deaths worldwide in 2015, making it the second leading cause of death across the globe.

certain signs and symptoms that are often identified by women who have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. These symptoms include:

Though cancer is often fatal, it doesn't have to be. The WHO notes that cancer mortality can be reduced if cases are detected and treated early. When identified early, cancer is more likely to respond to effective treatment. In addition, the WHO notes that screening is a valuable asset in the fight against cancer, potentially identifying abnormalities suggestive of specific cancers in individuals who have not developed any symptoms. By including cancer screenings in their health care regimens, men and women who feel healthy may be able to catch cancer before it reaches its later stages and/or spreads to other parts of their bodies.

· Pelvic or abdominal pain

One of the characteristics of cancer that make it so formidable is it does not necessarily produce symptoms. For example, in the case of ovarian cancer, in which cancerous cells are found inside, near or on the outer layer of the ovaries, nonspecific symptoms, coupled with a lack of early detection tests, make it difficult to detect this disease that will affect one in 75 women during their lifetimes. In fact, the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition notes that only about 20 percent of ovarian cancers are caught in the early stages of the disease (stage I or II). The five-year survival rate in those instances is more than 90 percent. However, when ovarian cancer is first detected in stages III or higher, survival rates can be as low as 28 percent. Because there is no accurate screening test for ovarian cancer, the NOCC advises all women to undergo annual rectal and vaginal pelvic examinations. In addition, the NOCC recommends that women familiarize themselves with certain signs and 30

· Bloating

· Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly · Feeling the need to urinate urgently or often · Fatigue · Upset stomach or heartburn · Back pain · Pain during sex · Constipation or menstrual changes If these symptoms are new and persist for more than two weeks, the NOCC advises women to see their physicians as well as a gynecologic oncologist before surgery if cancer is suspected. It's important to note that the presence of any of the aforementioned symptoms does not necessarily mean a woman has ovarian cancer. Many of the symptoms may disappear if dietary changes are instituted or after exercise. Laxatives and rest also may cause symptoms to disappear. However, the persistence of any of these symptoms warrants an immediate consultation with a physician. More information about ovarian cancer is available at www.ovarian.org.

mind & body

CONNECT WITHIN

By Jackie Silver, founder and president of Aging Backwards, LLC

Is it Possible to Think Yourself Younger? Can what you think actually have an effect on your body? According to research, it can. That is the mind and body connection at work. Your psychological and emotional state affects the endocrine system. The hypothalamus, the emotional center of the brain, transforms emotions into physical response affecting appetite, body temperature, circulation and a host of other functions. It stands to reason that if you can control your emotions, you can control these physical responses.

Thoughts could age you Emotions (thoughts) control physical response. Your body is programmed to “fatten up” during the winter. Find a photo of yourself in which you really liked the look from the neck up. Then, cut out a beautiful bikini body that you admire from a magazine. Here is the key – putting your head on a tall, super skinny supermodel’s body may not be realistic. Specifically find a bikini body that resembles your body type very closely so that your goal would be attainable. Tape the photo of your head to the photo of the bikini body. Every time you go to the fridge, you will see that photo. The purpose is not to make you eat less. The purpose of having the photo there is to remind your unconscious brain “You look like that.” Maybe it will have the effect of curbing your appetite, unconsciously. It will not happen in a week and it does not 32

happen by “magic”. It will happen because you are consistent with your exercise program and eating a proper diet. Make it perfectly clear to your unconscious brain that you intend to look like the person in that composite photo.

Visualizing a younger version Visualize the inside of your body. Study charts of the human body so that you could get a better visual in your mind. All you have to do is search online “human body chart” images and it is like a free science course! Visualize your telomeres as long and tightly knit up at the ends. A telomere is a region of repetitive DNA at the end of a chromosome, which protects the end of the chromosome from deterioration. Scientists consider it an excellent marker of aging. The longer your telomeres are, the “younger” your cells. Telomeres were only recently discovered and understood by biological researcher Elizabeth Blackburn and colleagues, and play an important role in protecting your chromosomes from critical damage. You can use this visualization technique during your own meditation time to “influence” your telomeres. In case you are thinking that meditation cannot really benefit you, think again. In a study conducted by the University of California, researchers found that people who regularly meditated over a three-month period had more active telomerase, that enzyme that helps preserve telomeres.

4 Ways to Rebound from a Midlife Slump By “A Liberated Trucker Babe”, author Xandra ‘Sunny’ Moon

There are thousands of beautiful mothers, wives and exwives who feel like they have lost their sexuality. Here are six ways in which women 40 and older can rediscover their “inner babe” and get it back.

Embrace your sexuality. Older women have more

self-possession. They are not as callow and tend to have more character both in personality, and intrigue . Women 40 and older are also more forthright.

Education

and employment. Having your own income allows women the power to choose their relationships, and not remain stuck in one.

Remember your old social life. A big part of relocating your inner diva is remembering the good times you had as a teen and 20-something. In many ways, these things are like new again. Underappreciated mothers and wives tend to live primarily for others, but now it is time to reclaim those fun nights out with the girls and catch some time for yourself. Health, diet and exercise. Of course, feeling and looking attractive is important to you – so be healthy! Nothing is better at giving ladies that can-do attitude than a nice workout. Being selective about what you eat is as important as being selective about who you date. You want a partner and diet that will treat you right. If you are single and in your 40s, 50s, 60s or older, you can either wait around for the kids or grandkids to come by and visit, or you can get out there and regain the vitality and lust for life you used to have. azhealthandliving.com | September 2018

Always consider to whom you are telling the story, and think of yourself as “translating” the intent of the story onto a level this person can understand. You can tell a story differently at different developmental stages. Think about what you most want the child to remember. Start simply with what you know, and tell it in your own words. If you make a mistake say, "I forgot to tell you that…" and go on; children find that endearing. Another way to handle having left out a part is to say, "Now what Aunt Joan didn't know yet was that Uncle Bill had already bought the tickets." This presents the information you forgot as a dramatic element of the tale. Storytelling reinforces reading, too, and adds a rich oral language element, but it demonstrates something additional.

One powerfully positive element of storytelling is that it fosters a strong bond between parent and child. Through our stories, and the manner in which we choose to tell them, families and entire societies pass on what matters most to them. Children come to recognize that you are sharing your true self, not through a lecture but through a story. Your child may not retain into adulthood every single detail you taught him/her, but always will remember that, “Mom/Dad loved me enough to share what s/he thought really mattered the most.” If you are fortunate, there will come a day when you see your own child, now grown up, carry on this story tradition with his/her child. It all starts and ends with love –and a good story.

How to Talk About Weight with Your Children If your child is overweight, deciding to talk about this unhealthy lifestyle is only the first step. It can also be a huge challenge to have a productive, helpful discussion, especially if your child is unwilling to hear what you have to say. Here are eight suggestions for avoiding as much conflict as possible.

Put the focus squarely on health and off weight Whether by default or by design, each family has a health and wellness “culture”. This includes the types of food that are kept in the house, how heavily physical activity is emphasized, what sleep patterns are encouraged, how much health information is available and more. As a parent, you should emphasize each aspect of this health culture, not just your child’s weight. Remember, healthy weight follows good lifestyle behaviors, but good lifestyle behaviors typically do not follow weight loss diets.

Recognize that you spend too much time focusing on weight Most people do not realize how much they use weight as a yardstick to measure their overall quality of life as well as their worth. For example, how many times have you asked about a piece of clothing, “Does this make me look fat?” with the understanding that if the answer is ‘yes’ you have somehow failed? That is why, when broaching the subject of weight with your child, and in your own life, it is important to stop talking about weight and even, to some extent, appearance. Emphasize other characteristics. For example, talk about how an unhealthy lifestyle influences your child’s self-esteem and thus demeanor, as well as how they express himself or herself and the impression they make on other people.

Ask your child what would help Yes, you are the authority figure in this relationship, but it can be a mistake to assume that you know the best way to help your child become healthier. One of the problems with giving support from a position of experience is that you tend to think that your child’s situation is the same as yours; therefore, the things that worked for you will work for them. That is not 36 September 2018 | azhealthandliving.com

necessarily the case. Instead, it is always a great idea to ask what your child thinks the best course of action would be.

Focus on change, even if you run into resistance The purpose of any discussion about losing weight and living a healthier lifestyle is to bring about change. In other words, talking to your child about their weight angst for an hour might have some value because it allows them to vent, but try not to leave the discussion there. Try to take onestep forward, too, even if your child is resistant to change. An effective way to overcome resistance (or even cut the conversation short if things are getting heated) is to get a commitment to make just one change in the next week. That might be anything from drinking fewer sodas and more water to walking three days a week. Focusing on one simple change a week seems manageable (as opposed to dropping 30 pounds, which is overwhelming), and is a very constructive way to move the conversation forward without being too bogged down.

Observe how your child, and the

whole family, uses food Your discussion will be better received and more effective if you are well informed, so before instigating “the talk”, observe how your child uses food. For example, if you see that they eat in order to manage their emotions, you have gained an important piece of information about a very damaging habit. The truth is you are not always your best observer. If you can determine whether your child is using food as a drug to avoid discomfort or as a stress manager, you are one-step closer to attacking the root of the problem. You can explain to your child that this underlying eating “trigger”, not food itself, is what you will need to focus on managing.

Do not be judgmental One thing is for sure – nobody is perfect. Another thing is for sure – if you attack someone with words, they will stop listening to you. Considering those two truths, you should avoid blaming your child at all costs. The fact is, we live in a fat culture, and the majority of Americans are overweight. In many ways, your child’s struggle is not their fault. However, it is their and your responsibility to do something about it. The focus should always be on how you can help your child move forward from here, expressed as lovingly as possible.

Walk the walk In the end, your example is the best way to change your child’s health behaviors. Teens, in particular, are sensitive to hypocrisy. So if you are not ready to make any and all of the changes that you are asking of your child, do not instigate the weight discussion in the first place. If you cannot walk the walk, then your actions will simply be encouraging your children to continue with unhealthy habits that will have a major negative impact on their lives.

If you really cannot get through Sometimes, despite their best efforts, parents just cannot get a positive response from their children. If this happens in your family, someone needs to have the weight discussion with your child. Getting professional help is always a good idea, but there may be others such as relatives, friends, or teachers who might get a more receptive response. If all else fails. Well, all else cannot be allowed to fail. Your child’s life is too important. azhealthandliving.com |September 2018

Comprehensive programs to improve balance and walking must include rehabilitation of the information coming from the feet, the eyes and portions of the brain itself. We call these different "channels of balance" and to rehabilitate one without considering the others is often inadequate. In addition to specific exercises for the inner ear, exercises that help restore sensation from the feet, vision exercises or more accurately eyemovement exercises, and specific cerebellar training offer the best hope for restoring balance and steadiness in patients suffering from vertigo and other balance disorders. . If previous varicose vein treatment has been ineffective, a phlebectomy procedure may be the best course of action. To be sure, your doctor will perform a vascular ultrasound to determine whether the vein in question is a good candidate for the vein-stripping procedure. If the vein is found to be unresponsive, your doctor will recommend the phlebectomy surgery to manually remove the varicose vein from your leg. This vein removal surgery can be relatively simple, depending on the size and location of the vein, as well as the type of phlebectomy procedure that is required. Your vascular surgeon will perform your phlebectomy procedure by applying local anesthesia, making a series of small cuts along the surface of your leg, and then carefully pulling the vein out through these tiny incisions using a special tool. Most phlebectomy patients find the procedure minimally invasive, with only minor discomfort compared to the pain caused by their varicose veins. Q. How much recovery time can I expect after my phlebectomy surgery? A. The amount of downtime a patient will need following phlebectomy depends largely on the type of vein removal required. Since there are several types of phlebectomy, recovery time can range from virtually nonexistent to a bit more extensive. Ambulatory phlebectomy is an outpatient procedure performed right in your vascular surgeon s office that removes superficial veins from the surface of the skin on your leg. Ambulatory phlebectomy requires no stitches and minimal local anesthesia, and the patient is able to walk as soon as the procedure is completed. On the other hand, microphlebectomy, a more extensive phlebectomy procedure involving veins that were too large to respond to sclerotherapy or laser treatments, may require several days of recovery including wrapping the legs with elastic bandages.

Q. Why do I need a colonoscopy? A. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the U.S. amongst men and women, and the second leading cause of cancer related death overall. One in 20 Americans will suffer colorectal cancer that is about 5 percent of the National population. In this week, alone 19 people will lose their fight with colon cancer in Arizona. It is estimated that over 50 thousand deaths will occur from colorectal cancer this year. That is a staggering amount when you consider how highly treatable and curable the disease is in its early stages.

Q. Our family is very active – how Q. What is obstructive sleep apnea? can we protect our eyes and vision A. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is from potential damage? characterized by complete airway A. We wear sunscreen to protect our skin, obstruction. It often is found, but not yet we may not realize that ultraviolet (UV) light can also damage the eyes, most frequently from exposure that occurs prior to age 20. Always wear polarized sunglasses with a minimum confirmed UV400 rating, especially near water. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can result in photokeratitis (the equivalent of a sunburned eyeball), as well as retinal damage or cataracts. For more active sports like baseball and soccer, you may want to use protective eyewear to prevent injuries.

Risks include anyone over the age of 40 at which point the risk of the disease doubles every 10 years. Ninety percent of all colorectal cancers will occur over the age of 50. Men are twice more likely to get the disease over women. People with firstdegree relatives (parents/sibling/offspring) who have colon cancer have 2-3 time increased risk of developing the disease.

Wear goggles to help protect the eyes from irritants in water, such as chlorine, salt, or bacteria. If eyes are red after swimming, use over-the-counter, preservative-free artificial tears. If your eyes still feel irritated after a couple of hours, see your doctor. Never wear contact lenses in the water—bacteria and other organisms can work their way under contacts and can lead to sight-threatening conditions like corneal ulcers.

Symptoms can include rectal bleeding or a change in bowel habits such as diarrhea or constipation. Unfortunately, many polyps and cancers will fail to produce any symptoms at all.

When the heat drives us indoors, reduce eye stress to avoid dry, irritated eyes by minimizing exposure to phones, tablets, and computer screens. A condition known as Computer Vision Syndrome can cause eyestrain or headaches. Make sure screens are a forearm’s length away, and use the 20-20-20 rule to allow eyes to relax and reset: Every 20 minutes, look at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

Early detection is key for most colorectal cancers start as polyps. These small polyps are detectable via colonoscopy and highly treatable at this stage for they allow for removal before transforming into cancer. There are over a million colorectal cancer survivors in the U.S. If everyone 50 years or older had a colonoscopy screening, as many as 80 percent of cancer deaths could be prevented.

limited to, older, overweight men, but also affects significant percentages of women and children as well. If someone in your family has OSA, you will be more likely also to have it.

The serious and life-threatening problems start when sleepers begin experiencing apneas, where breathing stops and hypopneas, where breathing is shallow due to an obstruction. Breathing is usually blocked in the back of the throat because: The tongue and muscles relax during sleep. The lower jaw falls back toward the throat. The airway becomes blocked. A typical sequence of OSA occurs when a person stops snoring and is silent for seconds, or minutes. The body’s oxygen level drops and the blood pressure rises. This causes the sleeper to wake briefly and begin breathing. Once asleep again, the muscles relax and the airway becomes blocked, cutting off the airway again. This cycle can occur hundreds of times per night. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common form of sleep apnea. It ranges in severity from mild to moderate, to severe. Other forms of sleep apnea include central and mixed sleep apnea.

Q. What treatment options are available Q. What is 3D Mammography and who is the best candidate? for severely sun damaged skin? . The Hetter eel is powerful skin treatment A. 3D Mammography, also known as digital that provides a dramatic change to wrinkly, aged skin and severe sun damaged skin. This procedure is performed by a plastic surgeon and will make a lifelong improvement in the tone and texture of your skin. Whether treating mild to moderate or the most severe skin damage, the dramatic improvement in your skin from this procedure is unmistakable.

breast tomosynthesis, can be performed at the same time and on the same unit as a traditional 2D mammogram. There is very little difference in the experience or time expended for the patient. While the breast is compressed for the standard 2D image, a second set of images is obtained by taking multiple images at different angles to create a 3D image of the breast.

The aged appearance of the skin is a result of time, gravity, sun exposure and other environmental factors. The combination of these factors causes progressive thinning of the skin due to the loss of collagen, microscarring from repetitive facial movement and irregular pigmentation including bronzing, age spots, pre-cancers, or chronically red, irritated areas. For many years, plastic surgeons have been frustrated with the search for rejuvenation procedures to correct aging effects of facial skin. While facelift surgery provides the answer for structural laxity, the tone and texture damage of the skin is not addressed. The Hetter eel penetrates the deep structures of the skin and will improve advanced skin damage.

It is important to remember that 2D digital mammography remains the gold standard for breast screening. While many women may benefit from 3D mammography, we believe that women with dense, complicated breast tissue or patients at increased risk for developing breast cancer may benefit the most from this technology.

As technology improves, laser therapy certainly has a place for rejuvenation of the aging face. These options are attractive because of the shorter recovery time. However, to achieve the most dramatic results for advanced skin damage with a lasting benefit, the Hetter A personalized approach determined by a eel is the best option. healthcare provider should be taken with each patient to ensure the most beneficial exam with the least amount of radiation.

Breast density can be determined by a mammogram. Women with dense breasts have less fatty tissue with typically more fibrous and glandular tissue present. The appearance on a mammogram of a dense breast is more solid and opaque. This can make it more difficult to detect subtle abnormalities. The radiologist who analyzes your mammogram will determine the ratio of non-dense tissue to dense tissue and assign a level of breast density. This will be included in your report. There are four classifications; which range from almost all fatty tissue to extremely dense tissue with very little fat.

There are many different theories why we get bunions but in the end, the physical attributes of most bunions are the same. Most bunions are caused by a muscle imbalance and, to a certain degree, extra bone growth over the big toe joint. As the muscles become imbalanced, the foot becomes misaligned and can lead to a bunion.

There are many things that can be done for a bunion. Wearing good shoes with the appropriate width in the toe box can help. Also, wearing good arch supports or custom orthotics can help as well. Threads give you an instant improvement with the mechanical lift and a long-term benefit of collagen creation. The newest generation of threads, such as PDO and Silhouette Instalift, are both dissolvable over time, thus minimizing complications of "old threadlifts. PDO Thread (Polydioxanone) is a suture material that has been around for almost 30 years and will dissolve completely in four to six months. The material is broken down by the body stimulating new healthy collagen. PDO threads are inserted with needles in a matter of minutes. This may come as a surprise to many of you just as being aware that more advanced eye care treatment may be provided to your animal companion. Certain species, such as dogs, are more prone to genetic cataracts than humans. Others, such as horses, may be affected with auto-immune inflammation or uveitis within the eye. Many species may be affected by glaucoma, whether primary and genetic in nature or secondary to another condition such as Valley Fever infection or a tumor. This month, I would like to highlight corneal ulcerations, also known as abrasions or scratches of the cornea. An uncomplicated superficial ulcer should heal in approximately one week. If an ulcer has not healed or worsened, then a look at the underlying cause and treatment plan must be revisited. Ulcers can be induced from trauma, such as an external scratch or secondary to cactus foreign body but there are many other types of ulcers. Some wounds may become infected with bacteria or fungus and then progress in depth. Ulcers may be caused from ectopic or abnormal eyelashes, dry eye, and entropion or rolling in of the eyelid margin. A degenerative, genetic ulcer is not uncommon in aging and diabetic dogs, especially Boxer dogs. If an ulcer hasn’t healed after a week of treatment, consider seeing a specialist as not only are ulcers painful but at worst may be eye and vision-threatening.

EXCEL & ACHIEVE

CAREER, BUSINESS & FINANCE By Holly Caplan, workplace issues expert, career coach and author, www.hollycaplan.com

Should I Stay or Should I Go? Three signs you should keep your job and three signs you shouldn’t

Growing up I was taught by my parents to get a job and keep a job. Period. It was ingrained in me that once I graduated college, I needed to land at a good company and stay there. The big reward would be retirement at 40 years with a fancy company pen and pension. This was my mindset for years. It’s what was expected of me, and it is what I aspired to do. Ultimately though, the longest I held out at one company was 14 years, thank you very much. I was on a roller coaster with highs of success and excitement to lows of frustration and disappointment. Yet, with dogged determination and loyalty I stuck out it. I was supposed to, right? Wrong. By staying, I denied myself the opportunity for even more growth and opportunities. Staying was comfortable (even in the hardest times), but it wasn’t always productive. Even though all of this is in my rearview mirror now, wish I would have known years before how to assess if I should stay or go. I needed some type of guideline to know when it was time to depart. It would have given me confidence in making the big decision and the courage to pull the rip cord to create change for myself. Here are three statistics that will give you an indication of how employees view their current companies and jobs: 71 percent of workers said they are looking to change employers. 37 percent of engaged employees are looking for jobs or watching for opportunities, as are 56 percent of not engaged and 73 percent of actively disengaged employees. 47 percent of people actively looking for new positions say company culture is the main reason. So, if you are feeling like you need a job change, you are not alone. Here are three signs that maybe it is time to take the leap, and three signs that you should tough it out a bit longer:

Three Signs you should quit your job: 48 September 2018 | azhealthandliving.com

Deficit in Development If you notice that your company isn’t doing anything to develop, train or promote you, it is a sign that it may be time to go. This is twofold. First, it shows they have little interest in your future and how you contribute to the organization. Second, your professional growth can be hindered if the company does not actively develop or promote. This deficit can create frustration on the employee’s behalf and it shows that the company is not invested in their people.

Getting Out of Bed We all go through periods where our jobs are miserable, or we are just flat bored. Getting out of bed can feel like a chore itself. If you are not mentally engaged in what you are doing for a living, don’t wait too long to make a change. Staying in a role you find completely uninspiring will do a

Leadership change is coming When you see that the people above you are moving on or moving out, hold tight. This could mean a positive change for you. Their movement makes room for perhaps your advancement, a role change or maybe even just a better work culture. This type of transition can yield professional growth, so watch what happens and then figure out what this can mean for you!

Look for a job while you have one It has been said again and again, it is best to look for a new job while you have a job. Even if you know you want to quit, stick with your current position (barring horrible circumstances) while you are on the new job search. Clearly by doing this, you are maintaining your current income, while at the same time you appear more marketable and desirable to your potential employer. In today’s environment, there is a lot more freedom of choice based on social acceptance of job hops, which can work in your favor. If you find you are in disengaged or perhaps indifferent, don’t waste any more time. Assess your current professional situation and don’t be afraid to ask yourself if you should stay or if you should go.

A Guide to Safely Removing Fallen Leaves Raking leaves is a chore many people immediately associate with autumn. Even though raking seems like a simple activity, it's still possible to be injured while removing leaves from the yard. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center advises that pain from outdoor leaf chores can range from strained back muscles to twisted knees. Blisters on the hands and sunburn are other potential side effects. Many people do not realize that raking is a thorough cardiovascular workout. Individuals at risk for cardiovascular disease or those who have recovered from surgery may not be well enough to rake leaves. Here's how to make autumn leaf removal more of a breeze when the job is done safely.

Pay attention when using a leaf blower Be cautious not to point an operational blower in the direction of people or pets, as debris can be blown about and cause injury.

Stretch out before raking leaves Warm up muscles beforehand so they are less likely to cramp. UPMC experts suggest taking a short walk before raking to stimulate circulation.

Here's how to make autumn leaf removal more of a breeze when the job is done safely.

50 September 2018 | azhealthandliving.com

Use proper raking form Much like snow shoveling, one should emphasize proper posture when raking, with legs slightly bent and weight distributed evenly. Hold the rake handle close to the body and keep one hand near the top of the rake for better leverage.

Use the proper gear A leaf rake fans out like a triangle and comes in various widths. Choose a lightweight material that can be easily maneuvered. A metal rake is for stones and dirt and shouldn't be used for leaves. To get between bushes, a smaller version of a leaf rake, called a shrub rake, should be used.

Wear protective gear When raking or leaf blowing, protect your eyes against debris. You also may want to use a mask to prevent inhalation of leaf mold and other particulates. Gloves can protect hands from blisters.

Follow manufacturers' directions Read the instructions for powered leaf blowers, and never modify the device in an unauthorized way.

Use a tarp and lift wisely Rake leaves onto a tarp that can be dragged to a garbage pail or to the curb for municipal pick up. For those who must lift bags of leaves, do so by bending at the knees, not from the waist.

Wear sunscreen Protect skin from the sun. Even though temperatures are cooler in the fall, this does not mean the sun's rays are any less harmful. Also, take breaks to rehydrate frequently.

Use a secure ladder When removing leaves from gutters, be sure the ladder is sturdy and secure. Consider having a friend serve as a spotter, holding on to the ladder to offer greater security. Do not overextend to stretch for leaves. If at any time during leaf cleanup you feel sharp or dull, incessant pains, stop working. Listen to your body's signals and start the task anew the next day or when you feel better. azhealthandliving.com |

Successful actress and author Judy Greer, 43, has been active in Hollywood for decades on the small and big screens. She’s appeared in comedy series “Arrested Development,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “Californication,” and “Archer.” She’s also been in some big block buster films including the Ant-Man series, “Jurassic World,” and the “Planet of the Apes,” among others. In 2014, she authored her first autobiographical novel, “I Don't Know What You Know Me From: Confessions of a Co-Star.” Bullseye With Jesse Thorn puts Greer’s successful career succinctly: “When Judy Greer first got out of school she auditioned for leading parts and not getting them. So she shifted gears. She became a co-star. Turned out she became one of the most successful co-stars in Hollywood. It stands to reason. She’s a gifted actress, she’s funny, she’s beautiful, but she still looks like a real human being you might know in real life.” Her still-popular book touches on her experiences in Hollywood. “In her first book of essays, “I Don’t Know What You Know Me From,” Greer writes about everything you would hope to hear from your best friend: how a midnight shopping trip to Walgreens can cure all; what it’s like to wake up one day with stepchildren; and how she really feels about fans telling her that she’s prettier in person. Yes, it’s all here—from the hilarious moments to the intimate confessions,” according to the book’s official description. 52

"You've heard the phrase 'There are no small roles, just small actors?'" she wrote in an article published by The Wrap. "Well, I kind of disagree. There are small roles, but when you get a lot of them in a row, you can become a pretty successful actress, and that's what I've done." In addition to her acting and writing ventures, Greer collaborated with Yahoo! to present a web series called “Reluctantly Healthy.” “The idea for "Reluctantly Healthy" came from working with a health coach who helped me eat healthier and exercise,” she told Scholastic Parents. “She gave me tips about eating better when on the road — things that seemed like common sense — but that I didn’t know. So I thought others might want the opportunity to have access to such advice. I want to share what I’m learning with people.” Some of her favorite go-to health tips? “Whether you’re traveling or running hundreds of errands, pack food with you,” she told Scholastic Parents. “Keep snacks in a cooler, or pack them in a carry-on or overnight bag if you’re going to another city. I also love using frozen ingredients — like frozen veggies — because you don’t have to worry about wasting food or having it spoil. It’s nice to keep some food in your freezer that you can whip up into a healthy last-minute meal.” In an interview with The Wrap, Greer shared her down to earth view on herself. “I feel like I have a healthy self-esteem. I know I’m selfdeprecating, but I don’t necessarily know that it’s a bad thing. I mean, I’m definitely happy, and I’m definitely happy with my work. But yeah, that’s just not who I am. It could just be the Midwesterner in me – we’re just not like that. You know, when I’m out with other actors and they’re like, “Oh, did you see my work in such-and-such movie, it was really great,” I’m always shocked. Because I always feel like I can do better.” Fans can follow Greer’s candid, fun-loving attitude and career on social media. Save Your Face One Exercise at a Time Hundreds of billions of dollars are spent each year on anti-aging and anti-wrinkling treatments in an effort to improve one's appearance and mask potential signs of aging. Zion Market Research says the global anti-aging market was valued at $140.3 billion in 2015 and is expected to reach $216.52 billion in 2021. Although medical procedures and products sold at drug stores and by cosmetics retailers have their benefits, exercise also may provide some benefits, especially as it pertains to one's face and appearance. Just as it is possible to tone the body, one also can tone the muscles in the face to improve his or her appearance. Brands like Face Yoga and FaceXercise promote facial exercises that reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines without the need for more invasive procedures. Proponents of Face Yoga, which is a series of exercises performed most days of the week for about 20 minutes a day, say it will tone underlying muscles and help improve blood circulation. Fans attest that the movements also may encourage the production of collagen, which is the protein that keeps skin elastic and gives it its plump feeling. The face contains 57 muscles that can be worked gently to see results. A new Northwestern Medicine study published in JAMA Dermatology is the first scientific study to test the premise of facial exercise and its effects on appearance. The study found that a daily or alternate-day 30-minute facial exercise program sustained over 20 weeks improved the facial appearance of middle-aged women, resulting in a younger appearance with fuller upper and lower cheeks. The idea is that building muscle volume can counter the effects of age-related fat thinning and skin loosening in the face. Some people are skeptical of facial exercise, while others emphasize caution in regard to which exercises are chosen. 56

September 2018 | azhealthandliving.com

Some dermatologists warn that pulling the face in the wrong directions through exercise actually may speed up the process of wrinkling and premature aging, making face exercises a trend to avoid. People who are currently on the fence may want to focus on movements that will strengthen facial muscles. Doris Day, M.D., author of the book "Skinfluence," says to try a facial movement where you look like you're going to laugh or smile but don't actually follow through. This raises eyebrows and targets those muscles and the ones by the ears that pull the skin back. Adopting a neutral face at rest is helpful as it helps prevent wrinkled brow and lines from frowning. The jury is still out as to the efficacy of facial exercise for wrinkle reduction. Combining facial stretching with a healthy diet and use of sunscreen and resolving to stay hydrated might help reduce the appearance of aging.

Understanding Your Skin’s Biology Can Help You Improve Its Look

By Ron Cummings, founder and CEO of Amino Genesis Skin Care

Most people have a vague idea of what’s good and bad for our skin, but since we don’t understand the biology involved, we either do nothing or the wrong things, says skin-care expert Ron Cummings. How many times do we find mixed reports on health? Are eggs good or bad for you? Too much sun is bad, but so is too little – there’s so much information overload, many people shrug off what they don’t fully comprehend. In addition to environmental factors, such as smoke and excessive sun exposure, there are two primary biological processes that age our skin: oxidization and glycation, he says. Despite antioxidants being all the rage in recent years, few people are aware of what occurs through glycation – the process antioxidants are intended to combat. Glycation happens when a sugar molecule bonds with a

Try to cut out most sugar. Americans average 150

pounds of sugar intake each year, according to the American Heart Association, and most eat and drink two to four times the amount they should. Sugar is a ubiquitous ingredient in the American diet and can be found in drinks and condiments. Sugar molecules – especially refined sugar, which is pure sucrose -- fuels glycation. In a European study, volunteers were asked to view photos of 602 people; those with the highest sugar intake were deemed to look the oldest. A high-sugar diet is also linked to diabetes.

which makes our skin look smooth and plump, is a protein that’s particularly vulnerable. Cell damage through glycation results in wrinkles, lines and discoloration. To maintain youth – and even reverse some of that damage – here are a few tips:

Monitor your alcohol intake. Alcohol causes skin to get puffy and flush with dilated blood vessels. Over time, even moderate intake can cause permanent spider veins on one’s face, chest, abdomen, arms and hands. Damaged vessels leak, which causes discoloration and puffiness. Alcohol worsens common skin diseases such as psoriasis and rosacea; causes dehydration, which makes skin sag; causes a deficiency in nutrients, and impairs immune systems. The moderate intake of red wine, however, may help skin because red grapes are filled with antioxidants.

Keep an eye out for anti-glycation products. Most topical products maintain the skin’s existing moisture by acting as a barrier. Other products utilize antioxidants to stabilize oxygen molecules that have lost electrons and cause damage to cell membranes when they take electrons from stable molecules. Products with newly discovered plant extracts address glycation by breaking the sugar molecule’s bond with collagen, allowing the protein to return to its original shape. azhealthandliving.com | September 2018

SENIOR LIVING

STAY HEALTHY

By MS

Different Generations can Learn and Benefit from One Another In the not-so-distant past, extended families frequently lived in close proximity to one another. Such families shared meals and experiences and essentially grew up together. Nowadays, families separate for various reasons, such as job opportunities and cost of living concerns. While there are advantages to spreading out, there are also some disadvantages, namely that grandparents and grandchildren may not see one another frequently enough. Even though people of different age groups may not entirely have the same interests, the interactions between generations can benefit both young people and their aging relatives.

Finding renewed vigor Senior living and active lifestyle communities provide invaluable care and amenities for seniors. While being around like-minded individuals can be handy, it's also limiting. Seniors who continue to age in place in mixed-age communities can extract joy from watching youthful children and young adults growing up, playing and socializing. Being around multiple generations also can spark interesting conversation, and all parties involved can learn something from one another.

Planning for the future Younger generations may not understand the concept of "hard times" or "doing without" like a person who has lived through various ups and downs. Passing along advice about economic cycles, saving for the future and maintaining stability is one area of expertise at which many seniors excel.

Practicing interpersonal skills All the technological savviness in the world cannot compensate for the power of strong interpersonal skills. Being able to address a group of people or speak one-on-one is essential in the workplace and in life. When younger generations speak to older adults, they may become stronger at verbal discourse and have greater perspective of different points of conversation. 62

Learning new technology Younger generations can impart knowledge of technological devices to older adults. People with skills are usually happy to share their knowledge. Even if seniors aren't ready to purchase tablets or smartphones, they may be excited to have their grandchildren teach them about the latest gadgets.

Providing sense of purpose Both seniors and younger generations can realize a greater sense of purpose when interacting with one another. That person may be the reason the other one greets the day with a smile. Visits from grandchildren can reduce the likelihood of isolation and depression in older adults. And younger generations can discover the benefits of personal social interaction rather than communicating exclusively through social media apps. Fostering intergenerational connections is a great way to broaden social circles, improve communication and learn new things.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, red lights called enemies, caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith and a driver named Jesus—you will make it to a place called success.” – Author Unknown

All Hannah’s parents should worry about is Hannah When Hannah’s bloodwork revealed cancer, her family was devastated. But because of our donors, her mom and dad can focus on being parents while she looks forward to her visits with the music therapist at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.® Families like Hannah’s will never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food—because we believe all they should worry about is helping their child live.
