Back-to-School Made Simple Local education store a staple in the Valley

Summer has flown by and it’s almost time for kids to go back to school. This time of year can often be stressful for teachers and parents, but thanks to one local business, it’s easy to get ready and excited for the upcoming school year.

Teaching & Learning Stuff has been a staple in the Valley since opening its doors in 1993. The stores provide customers with access to the best educational supplies, materials, products and more.

After teaching in the Valley for more than 10 years, Theresa Bundgaard was given the opportunity to purchase the business from her in-laws and stay in a field that she was passionate about. She changed the name from Teaching Stuff to Teaching & Learning Stuff to cater to more than just teachers.

“Over the years, we’ve become known as a ‘teacher store,’ but it’s way more than that,” says Bundgaard. “We cater to anyone who has a child in their life and enjoys seeing their child grow and learn.”

In addition, during the holidays, Teaching & Learning Stuff participates in the Angel Tree program, where they donate gifts to kids in need. The stores also facilitate back-to-school drives to help supply children, teachers, and schools with everything they need.

Teaching & Learning Stuff outfits teachers and parents with every possible tool they could want to make teaching enjoyable for kids. With two kids of her own, Bundgaard knows the importance of quality learning and how it should extend beyond the classroom.

Later this year, Teaching & Learning Stuff will launch a brand new service called “Build-A-Class-Kit,” where teachers create their classroom supply list online and parents can order the kit and have it delivered free of charge to their child’s classroom before the first day of school.

In addition to selling educational supplies and products, Teaching & Learning Stuff offers classroom management training at schools. The professional development in-service is taught by Bundgaard and covers three specific categories: crowd control, classroom community and paperwork. The affordable workshop is available for an entire campus to prepare for the upcoming school year.

“No more lugging your children’s supplies through the parking lot in the summer heat on meet the teacher night,” says Bundgaard. “It’s all about convenience.”

Albert Einstein once said that “education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.” Learning is meant to be fun and exciting, and that is exactly what Teaching & Learning Stuff is all about.

The first Teaching & Learning Stuff location opened in Glendale in 1993. Since then, Bundgaard and her team have opened two more locations in Phoenix and Mesa. This summer they opened their fourth location in the Flagstaff mall, providing learning materials to northern Arizona educators and families just in time for back to school.

Bundgaard continues to look for opportunities to grow the business.

Partnering with the community to deliver a range of health, education and social services With five locations in Arizona, Touchstone Health Services partners with individuals, families, schools and other service providers to deliver the optimal continuum of health, education and social services. The emphasis of these services is to support individuals and families so they can acquire the skills they need to lead productive and responsible lives.

“Touchstone offers various services to families with children from birth to 17 years old. These services are broken up into three different categories: birth to age 6; ages 7 to 17; and prevention,” explains Damien Johnson, Communications and Public Relations Coordinator for Touchstone.

One of the several services they provide in the birth to 6 years old programs is the Infant and Early Childhood Program (IECP). “Our team begins with a comprehensive developmental, history and trauma assessment to identify the appropriate interventions. The IECP program works with the Arizona Department of Child Safety to achieve permanency for the children being served. The team works closely with both the foster families to prevent foster home disruption and with the biological families when reunification is the goal,” Johnson says.

One of the many services provided to youth, particularly ages 11-17, is the Multisystemic Therapy (MST). MST is an intensive evidence-based family therapy program that has been proven effective in treating youth with serious acting out behaviors, says Johnson. MST helps empower parents and caregivers with skills and resources needed to independently address challenging behaviors. “Touchstone Health Services is the only organization in the state that provides MST,” Johnson adds.

Touchstone Health Services’ prevention team serves communities and schools with several grant-funded programs. One in particular is the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program (TPPP). TPPP is funded by the Office of Adolescent Health, Department of Health and Human Services, and addresses the growing need for awareness and education on teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

The TPPP goal is to reach more than 2,500 youth per year with an evidence-based teen pregnancy prevention curriculum.

“This prevention program services the Maryvale community of Phoenix and the cities of Tolleson and Avondale,” Johnson says. “TPPP also facilitates the Community Alliance for Resources and Education (CARE) Coalition. The CARE Coalition’s purpose is to improve adolescent health in the West Valley, engage in a comprehensive community awareness campaign, and offer an evidence-based parenting program to serve parents of teenagers.”

This year the organization extended the evidence-based therapy Multisystemic Therapy for Problem Sexual Behaviors (MST-PSB) in its Tucson clinic. This therapy was clinically adapted from the MST model to address youth from ages 10 through 17 who have problematic sexual behaviors. MSTPSB relies heavily on family therapy as a mechanism of change for the youth and family.

“Another service offered through Touchstone that we would like to highlight is our Family-Centered Autism Program (FCAP). FCAP provides integrated services to youth who are on the autism spectrum and to their family members. We utilize evidence-based interventions such as

Applied Behavioral Analysis, Positive Behavioral Support and Pivotal Response Therapy to assist the child and family to improve behavior and family functioning,” Johnson notes.

Touchstone Health Services Prevention Program was recently awarded monies from The Arizona Parents Commission on Drug Education and Prevention Grant Program. This program will target youth (ages 10-19) and adults caring for youth in Southwest Phoenix, which includes Avondale, Tolleson and Goodyear.

The organization also provides a yearly Childhood Trauma Conference for professionals within the industry to receive continuing education and discuss current topics and trends with dozens of guest speakers.

“Touchstone Health Services gives back to the community through various events hosted by our prevention programs,” Johnson says. “Touchstone ensures the most appropriate and up-to-date services are provided to the community members in need.”

UHCCF Seeks Grant Applications from Local Families

The UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation (UHCCF), a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that helps families pay for children’s medical expenses not covered, or not fully covered, by a commercial health insurance plan, is seeking grant applications from Arizona families. Qualifying families can receive up to $5,000 per grant to help pay for medical services and equipment such as physical, occupational and speech therapy, counseling services, surgeries, prescriptions, wheelchairs, orthotics, eyeglasses and hearing aids. Children must be 16 years of age or younger, meet economic guidelines, reside in the United States and have any commercial health insurance plan. Managing Pre-diabetes or Diabetes Diabetes and its precursor is a major problem, both in the United States and across the globe. In 2015, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed that nearly 50 percent of adults living in the United States have diabetes or prediabetes, a condition marked by higher than normal blood glucose levels that are not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization reports that the global prevalence of diabetes figures to rise from 8 percent in 2011 to 10 percent by 2030.

Preventing diabetes should be a priority for men, women and children, but management must take precedence for the millions of people who have already been diagnosed with prediabetes or diabetes. According to the American Heart Association, making healthy food choices is an essential step in preventing or managing diabetes. Making those choices can be difficult for those people who have never before paid much attention to their diets, but the AHA offers the following advice to people dealing with pre-diabetes or diabetes.

Limit foods that may worsen your condition. Some foods, including fiber-rich whole grains and fish like salmon that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, can help people with pre-diabetes or diabetes. But many more foods must be limited, if not largely ignored. Limit your consumption of sweets and added sugars, which can be found in soda, candy, cakes and jellies. It's also good to limit your sodium intake and resist fatty meats like beef and pork.

Document your eating habits. The AHA recommends that people with pre-diabetes or diabetes maintain a food log to see how certain foods affect their blood glucose levels. Within 60 to 90 minutes of eating, check your blood glucose levels to see how your body reacts to the foods you eat. As your food log becomes more extensive, you will begin to see which foods match up well with your body and which foods you may want to avoid.

with pre-diabetes or diabetes do not have the luxury of straying from healthy diets. Plan your meals in advance so your eating schedule is not erratic and your diet includes the right foods, and not just the most convenient foods. Bring lunch and a healthy snack to work with you each day rather than relying on fast food or other potentially unhealthy options in the vicinity of your office.

Embrace alternative ingredients. Upon being diagnosed with pre-diabetes or diabetes, many people assume they must abandon their favorite foods. But that's not necessarily true. Many dishes can be prepared with alternative ingredients that are diabetes-friendly.

A pre-diabetes or diabetes diagnosis requires change, but these conditions can be managed without negatively affecting patients' quality of life.

Robotic Surgery Can Be Advantageous

Certain illnesses or injuries require surgery to correct the problem or prevent further damage. Surgery is not something many people would volunteer for, but it can be a necessity in certain instances.

Patients may have many questions when they learn that surgery is on the horizon. Robotic surgery in particular may raise patients' eyebrows. Robotic surgery is a relatively recent development. According to Dr. Johnny Serrano of Precision Surgery Inc., robotic surgery is an advanced form of minimally invasive or laparoscopic (small incision) surgery.

Compared to open surgeries, robotic surgery offers many benefits to patients, some of which include minimal scarring, reduced blood loss, faster recovery time, reduced risk of infection, reduced pain and discomfort, possibly shorter hospitalization and faster recovery time.

Robotic surgery works similarly to traditional surgery, but instead of the surgeon working manually, robotic arms take over. During robotic surgery, typically three robotic arms are inserted into the patient through small incisions.

One arm is a camera and the other two serve as the surgeon's "hands." In some instances, a fourth arm is used to clear away any obstructions. Surgeons will perform the procedure using a computer-controlled console.

Robotic surgery does not mean that a robot is taking the place of a surgeon. Rather, robotic surgery combines the skills and knowledge of surgeons with advancements in technology in an effort to improve surgical procedures.

Many surgeons prefer robotic surgery because of its precision and the superior visualization of the surgical field that the procedure provides. It's also easier to account for tremors in the hands, and the machinery enables greater maneuverability.

How robotic surgery works The surgeon will work from a computer console in the operating room, controlling the miniaturized instruments mounted on the robotic arms. He or she looks through a 3D camera attached to another robotic arm, which magnifies the surgical site. The surgeon's hand, wrist, and finger movements will be transmitted through the computer console to the instruments attached to the robot's arms.

The mimicked movements have the same range of motion as the surgeon, allowing for maximum control. While the surgeon is working, the surgical team will supervise the robot at the patient's bedside.

Men, women, and children can benefit from robotic surgery, which has become especially helpful for gynecologic conditions. Robotic surgery has been used in the treatment of cancers of the abdomen, as well as pelvic masses, fibroids, tumors and tubal ligations. Robotic surgery also can be used for pelvic reconstruction surgeries and to treat incontinence and organ prolapse.

Although the success rates of traditional surgery versus robotic surgery have been relatively similar, many people are now leaning toward robotic surgery because of its advantages - and seeking doctors and hospitals trained in robotic surgery. azhealthandliving.com |August 2016

Coffee & Colon Health Coffee compels many people to rise out of bed every morning. While individuals have many reasons to drink caffeinated beverages, the most notable is often the pep such beverages provide. But coffee, tea and other caffeinated beverages actually may provide additional benefits, including helping to fend off disease, including colorectal cancer.

The American Cancer Society estimates that, in the United States, more than 95,000 new cases of colon cancer and 39,000 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed in 2016.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in men and women. However, coffee may help reduce instances of colon cancer.

A study titled "Coffee Consumption and the Risk of Colorectal Cancer," which was published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, found that regular coffee consumption inversely correlates to colorectal cancer risk. Coffee has been identified as a protective agent against colorectal cancer, as several of its components affect the physiology of the colon and can make cancerous cells less likely to take root there.

The Journal of the National Cancer Institute also substantiates these claims. Frequent coffee consumption has been associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer in a number of case-control studies - for both men and women.

Drinking coffee may not only help keep cancer at bay, it may boost the survival rate from colon cancer, too.

Information from a study published in The Journal of Clinical Oncology stated that colon cancer patients who are heavy coffee drinkers have a far lower risk of dying or having their cancer return than those who do not drink coffee. Significant benefits start at two to three cups per day. People who consumed four cups of caffeinated coffee or more a day had half the rate of recurrence or death than non-coffee drinkers.

found that decreased colorectal risk was seen across all types of coffee, both caffeinated and decaffeinated.

According to Dr. Stephen Gruber, the author of the study, coffee contains many elements that contribute to overall colorectal health, which may explain coffee's preventive properties. Caffeine and polyphenol can act as antioxidants, limiting the growth of potential colon cancer cells. Melanoidins generated during the roasting process have been thought to encourage colon mobility, and diterpenes may prevent cancer by enhancing the body's defense against oxidative damage.

Although data continues to suggest that coffee can help reduce colorectal cancer risk and survival rates, additional information is still needed before doctors can start recommending coffee consumption as a preventative measure.

How Music May Improve Health

While many people love music for its entertainment value, there is growing evidence that music can be good for overall health as well.

In a study titled, "The effect of music intervention in stress response to cardiac surgery in a randomized clinical trial," a team of Swedish researchers measured serum cortisol, heart rate, respiratory rate, mean arterial pressure, arterial oxygen tension, arterial oxygen saturation, and subjective pain and anxiety levels for patients who had undergone cardiothoracic surgery. Those who were allowed to listen to music during recuperation and bed rest had lower cortisol levels than those who rested without music.

According to Caring Voice Coalition, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of patients with chronic illnesses, music has also been shown to enhance memory and stimulate both sides of the brain, which may help individuals recover from stroke or those suffering from cognitive impairments.

Music also can have a positive impact on mood. Neuroscientists have discovered that listening to music heightens positive emotions through the reward centers of the brain. Music stimulates the production of dopamine, creating positive feelings as a result.

Some researchers think that music may help improve immune response, promoting faster recovery from illness. Undergraduate students at Wilkes University measured the levels of IgA - an important antibody for the immune system's first line of defense against disease - from saliva. Levels were measured before and after 30 minutes of exposure to various sounds, including music. Soothing music produced significantly greater increases in IgA than any of the other conditions.

Another way music has been linked to improved health is its ability to make physical activity seem less mundane. Listening to songs can distract one from the task at hand, pushing focus onto the music rather than the hard work being done. Although women make up 45 percent of the labor force and only 5 percent head Fortune 500 companies, women are making greater strides than ever before. For example, in 1998, just one woman led a Fortune 500 company, according to Pew Research Center.

Certain traits could help propel successful women to the top. Here's a look at some of the ways female professionals can overcome professional hurdles and make their mark.

Be passionate about what you do. Women who maintain passion about their careers are more likely to overcome any challenges and stand out in the workplace.

If your profession is not stoking any passion, explore alternate career opportunities.

Recognize your strengths. Today's professionals are less likely than their predecessors to stick with one company or line of work for their entire working lives. But just because you change jobs or career paths does not mean your past experience is useless. Successful women know what they do best, whether it's public speaking, writing or making sales pitches. Apply those strengths when looking for a new job or career.

Know when to ask for help. Even the most accomplished women have limitations. Asking for help when you need it can help you overcome those limitations. To be good at what you do, you first have to learn from others. Sometimes the smartest way to overcome an obstacle is having several hands on deck to provide a boost. Thinking that the work is better left to you alone could be a mistake. Enlist help when you need it and never hesitate to ask for another perspective.

Q. How do degenerative discs relate to neck and back pain?

A. General speaking, most of the neck and

low back pain are related to degenerative change of the spinal discs, which is usually considered part of the aging process. The degenerative change of spinal discs can affect the spine under three different phases.

In the first phase, the spinal disc loses water content due to restricted movement between two vertebral bones. When movement or range of motion decreases, decreased size or atrophy of the spinal disc may happen due to abnormal movement. This appears as a “thinning disc” seen on the MRI. Mild pain will often be felt around the middle and lower back in this phase.

In the second phase, the “thinning disc” continues to wear out if care is not provided in time. The disc is getting weaker and there is a potential that the inside contents of the disc—the gel like water content— might bulge out, which increase the pain intensity of the back with radiated sensations felt in legs and arms based on the affected areas (neck or low back).

In the third phase, if proper care is not given following second phase, the body starts the self protecting mechanism, meaning that bone spurs start to generate.

Indicators of Kids' Readiness for Kindergarten Kindergarten can be a pivotal time in a young child's life.

Although many kids attend preschool or receive guided learning at home, kindergarten marks students' first official foray into the classroom. This is an exciting time for kids and parents, and one that may be fraught with nerves. That is especially true for parents who are not quite sure if their children are ready to begin their academic careers.

While many school districts mandate that students must be at least 5 years old to begin kindergarten, age is not the only factor to consider when gauging kids' readiness for school.

Child-education experts note that there is no single factor that determines kids' readiness for school, but rather there is a host of factors that, when taken together, can help parents determine if their youngster is ready for the rigors of the classroom. The following are some factors parents can consider as they try to determine if their children are ready to enroll in kindergarten.

Separation anxiety: Does your child handle separation well, or is he or she prone to meltdowns each time you leave for even a short period? School requires kids to spend several hours away from home and away from their parents, and parents might need to take steps to increase youngsters' comfort levels away from home before school begins.

Follows instructions: Experts at BabyCenter.com advise that children who are able to listen to simple instructions and follow them will be more apt to thrive in classroom settings. They also will be more capable of keeping up with teachers and peers.

Self-sufficiency: Has your child exhibited signs that he or she can be self-reliant? This includes putting on his or her coat, dressing him or herself and being able to use the bathroom on his or her own. If not, then you might need to work on the child's self-sufficiency before school begins.

As a result, children should be able to recognize some letters and numbers before starting school. They do not necessarily have to enter school knowing them all or being able to read fluently, but the more familiar they are with language and mathematics the more likely they are to have a successful year in kindergarten.

How to Be Happier & Have More Meaningful Relationships The next time you’re out in a public place, whether at the grocery store, a baseball game or seeing a play, take a look around and note how many people have their noses buried in their smartphone. We think nothing of the ping from a text message, but the sound of a ringing phone is almost alarming these days. We’ve become programmed to communicate in short snippets, never fully sharing a story from beginning to end with all the details. In a world where we’re so overly connected with texting, email, blogs, Skype, Facebook, Twitter and more, it’s amazing how disconnected we really are as a society. We have so many forms of communication at our disposal, yet it’s exactly those mediums that often prevent us from having a real, meaningful conversation.

A recent New York Times article stated, “If you don’t regularly exercise your ability to connect face-to-face, you’ll eventually find yourself lacking some of the basic biological capacity to do so.” When we’re not having real life conversations with people, we are lacking key parts of a communication and aren’t able to pick up on things such as sensing a sense of approval or disapproval and it’s easy to misunderstand what is being communicated as a result of not hearing inflections in someone’s voice that let us know how the message is meant to be interpreted. We can all attest to misinterpreting a text message or email and wondering for days what the person really meant, but we don’t always ask to clear it up.

What Athletes Should Know About Shin Splints

Exercising more is a primary goal for many people, especially those interested in losing weight. Athletes also look to increase the time they spend exercising as new seasons draw near.

While additional exercise can benefit many people, those who frequently perform weight-bearing exercises or repetitive motions, such as running, dancing and jumping, may find themselves battling shin splints.

Also known as tibial stress syndrome, shin splints are a condition marked by pain in the shinbone, also known as the tibia. Shin splints are common among athletes and dancers who spend so much of their time on their feet. The Mayo Clinic says shin splints are caused by repetitive stress on the shinbone and connective tissues that attach muscles to the bone. Shin splints typically appear when there is a sudden increase in distance or intensity of a workout schedule.

Shin splints are characterized by tenderness, swelling, soreness, and/or pain along the inner part of the lower leg. While the pain may stop when the body stops exercising, eventually that pain can transform into continuous pain.

Many cases of shin splints can be alleviated through rest, icing and other self-care methods. Wearing proper footwear and modifying exercise routines can help ensure that shin splints are not a recurring problem.

Should shin splints not clear up on their own, or if over-thecounter pain relievers prove ineffective at managing pain, then athletes should contact their physicians. Whereas the competition in business has always been stiff, many trailblazers of yesteryear typically competed against only other locally owned businesses. But thanks to the Internet, businesses are now competing on a national, if not global, stage, making it harder than ever for businesspersons to draw attention to their products and services.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, roughly 66 percent of small businesses will survive their first two years. While that number should calm the nerves of entrepreneurs familiar with the widely circulated statistic that eight out of 10 small businesses fail, it's important to note that the five-year survival rate of establishments opened between 1994 and 2010 was just about 50 percent. A 50 percent chance to be in business five years after opening is certainly better than a 20 percent chance, but a 50/50 shot at being in business five years from now is unlikely to excite many prospective business owners.

When starting out, small-business owners must find ways to make their presence felt in crowded marketplaces. In 2007, Theron founded the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP), a nonprofit that “invests in programs that educate and empower [African] youth to keep themselves safe from HIV/AIDS.” Recently, CTAOP partnered with the shoe brand TOMS to raise funds for their cause.

Real estate investors do their investing for various reasons. Some see a house as a place to hang their hats for years and years, while others look at properties as nothing more than investments.

Buying a home with the intent to fix it up and resell it is called a "fix and flip." In such situations, investors buy homes at below-market prices before refurbishing the homes with the goal of recouping their initial investment and then some when the homes are ultimately put back on the market.

Flipping has become popular for both expert remodelers and novice investors. RealtyTracÂŽ, the nation's leading source for comprehensive housing data, noted in its "Year-End and Q4 2015 U.S. Home Flipping" report that 5.5 percent of all single family home and condo sales during the year were flipped properties. This marked an increase from the same time the previous year.

Investing in a fixer-upper requires a leap of faith and a vision of what the home can look like in the future. Turning a real estate lemon into lemonade requires certain skills and a good measure of patience. The following are some guidelines to get anyone started.

Don't bite off more than you can chew. Make an honest assessment of your abilities and which renovations, if any, you can handle. If you are unskilled or inexperienced working with your hands, then it can be easy for an investment property to quickly become a money pit. Before purchasing a property, hire a trained home inspector to tour the home with you and point out all of the areas that will need renovation. With this list, begin getting estimates on how much money the work will entail. Determine if this fits with your budget or not. You do not want to invest so much that it exceeds what you could feasibly recoup when it comes time to sell.

Overlook cosmetic things when visiting properties.

Address areas with standing water. Standing water is

attractive to mosquitoes because it gives them a place to breed.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, studies have shown that female mosquitoes prefer to lay eggs in water that collects or is stored in man-made containers.

The CDC recommends that items that can collect water, including pet bowls, vases, birdbaths and pool covers, be emptied and scrubbed at least once per week. When items like pet bowls are not in use, turn them over to empty them and then keep them covered until they must be used again. Tightly seal any water storage containers to prevent mosquitoes from getting inside and laying eggs.

Simulate wind. Few people may think to bring window or

desk fans outside when entertaining, but simulating wind can deter mosquitoes from invading patios and decks. Mosquitoes fly slowly and often cannot make it through the simulated wind created by man-made fans. In addition, fans may blow away the very things, such as body odor that draw mosquitoes to humans in the first place.

Light citronella candles and/or torches. Citronella candles and tiki torches that burn citronella are effective mosquito deterrent as well. Such candles and torches give off smoke that confuses mosquitoes and masks the human scents that attract the bugs. Place torches around your patio but find somewhere other than the dining table to place citronella candles if you decide to use them, as some people find the candles aggravating or bothersome.

Plant mosquito-repellent plants. The right plants might help

you keep mosquitoes at bay as well. For example, catmint contains an oil called nepeta faassenii that can be used as an all-natural mosquito repellent. Closely related to catmint, catnip also can be an effective mosquito deterrent. How to Get & Keep Your Finances in Order In 2015, analysts with the Government Accountability Office found that the average American between the ages of 55 and 64 had accrued roughly $104,000 in retirement savings, a shockingly low figure that would make it very difficult for men and women nearing retirement to maintain their quality of life into their golden years.

While many people fear retiring with small nest eggs that fear has apparently not been enough to inspire men and women to commit to saving more money for their golden years. But retirement saving is essential, especially since life expectancies are rising. According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, global life expectancies at birth are expected to rise to 76 years by the mid-21st century. That's a far cry from the mid-20th century, when global life expectancy from birth was roughly 48 years.

Longer life expectancies mean men and women will have to find ways to make their money last throughout their retirement. The earlier adults figure out how to keep their finances in order, the more money they will have when the time comes to retire. The following are a handful of strategies men and women can employ to rein in their finances in the hopes of saving more for retirement.

Review your finances at least once per month.

Hectic schedules or fear of the financial unknown makes it easy for adults to ignore their finances for long stretches of time. But adults should review their financial situation at least once per month, examining how they are spending their money and if there are any ways to cut costs and redirect dollars going out into their retirement accounts.

Redirecting as little as $100 per month into a retirement account can add up to a substantial amount of money over time.

Pay monthly bills immediately. Many adults receive monthly bills for utilities, rent/mortgage, phone and television/Internet. If you have the money in your account, pay these bills the moment you receive them. Doing so is a great way to avoid overspending on other items, such as dining out or shopping trips, and then finding yourself scrambling to pay bills come their due dates. Once all the monthly bills have been paid and you have deposited money into your savings/retirement accounts, then you can spend any leftover money on nights out on the town or new clothes if you feel the need.

Buy only what you can afford. It sounds simple, but many adults would have far more in their retirement accounts if they simply avoided buying items they cannot afford.

According to a 2015 Harris Poll conducted on behalf of NerdWallet, the average credit card debt per indebted American household in 2015 was $15,762.07. Adults who want to get their finances in order and start saving more for retirement should put the plastic away and only make purchases with cash or debit cards that take money directly out of their bank accounts once the card is swiped.

Downsize. Downsizing is another way to free up more money for retirement savings. Empty nesters can save money by downsizing to a smaller home or even an apartment.

Drivers who no longer need room for the whole family can downsize from SUVs or minivans to smaller, more fuelefficient vehicles. Adults also may be able to downsize their entertainment, switching from costly cable packages to basic plans or cutting the cord entirely and subscribing to more affordable streaming services.

Getting a grip on spending can help adults save more for retirement and ensure their golden years are not compromised by lack of funds.

Medication Mismanagement Can Be Prevented Medication management is an important issue for seniors and their families. Failure to manage medications properly can threaten the lives of seniors, highlighting the emphasis families must place on ensuring seniors take their medications in strict adherence to their physicians' instructions.

Polypharmacy, or the taking of multiple medications for different conditions, can be a potential health hazard for the thousands of seniors who must manage health conditions with prescription drugs. Harmful drug interactions are a result of the confusion that can arise when seniors take multiple medications at the same time. The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists estimates that more than 34 percent of senior citizens are prescribed medications by more than 1 physician and 72 percent use medications they were prescribed more than six months prior. Many people also have begun "pharmacy shopping" to save money.

According to a study published in 2010 in American Nurse Today, 44 percent of men and 57 percent of women older than age 65 take five or more medications per week, with some taking as many as 10.

Medication confusion is one risk, but older adults also metabolize medications differently than young people. As a result, they may be more susceptible to overdose or other ill effects. Families looking to help seniors effectively manage their medications should consider the following tips.

Keep a running list of medications. Maintain a list of all medications being taken, noting both prescription and over-the-counter medications and any supplements and herbs.

Provide a copy to any new doctors you visit and any new pharmacies you patronize.

Use pill sorters. Medication sorters can keep medications organized and eliminate some of the personal error in medication management. Organizers have daily slots and may differentiate between nighttime and daytime medications.

Understand why each medication is being prescribed.

Ask your pharmacist and doctor to explain why each medication is prescribed. This information should be printed on the prescription label. Some drugs designed for one symptom may actually be used to treat other issues as well.

Ask for help. Some seniors may benefit from friendly reminders from a loved one regarding when to take certain medications, especially if they need to take multiple doses throughout the day. Cognitively impaired seniors may require the services of a visiting nurse or another caregiver.

Recognize that not all medications are right for seniors. The American Geriatrics Society maintains a list of medications that older adults should avoid or take with extreme caution. Some drugs pose a high risk of side effects or interactions, while others are less effective. Discuss alternatives with your physician if you are prescribed one of these medications.

Keep a medication diary. Record any side effects that occur and how the medications make you feel. Always bring up issues promptly with a doctor.

Proper medication management can help seniors avoid drug-related accidents or worse.
