Hyperthermia Treatment:
Lessons Learned from a Summer on the Border

This presentation will focus on hyperthermia treatment in the extreme conditions of the Arizona-Mexico border region. Drawing on real-life experiences, this presentation will address specific incidents, emphasizing the dangers faced by migrants due to prolonged heat exposure and dehydration, exacerbated by the harsh desert environment.

About AEMS As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, AEMS is a community-based, volunteer organization dedicated to improving emergency medical services (EMS) and trauma care for the Central Arizona Region (which includes Maricopa, Pinal, and Gila counties).
Our Mission AEMS shall facilitate continuous improvement of the diverse components of Emergency Medical Services for the Central Arizona Region, through an inclusive, collaborative, patient-focused, and comprehensive approach, to meet the changing needs of the System and the community.
Collaboration This word best depicts what AEMS represents. Since 1975, AEMS has been bringing together physicians, nurses, EMTs, paramedics, and hospital administrators, and other healthcare professionals to ensure that emergency medical care is delivered in a coordinated manner, and moreover, that it is meeting the needs of the public. The support of these professionals, working together inclusively, harmoniously, and productively to support the AEMS’ mission, remains an integral part of our success.
Central Arizona Region Agent On behalf of the State of Arizona, Arizona Department of Health Services, AEMS serves as the Regional Emergency Medical Services Coordinating System for the Central Arizona Region.
Education • Prevention • Training Education, prevention, and training activities are a cornerstone function of AEMS. The EMS Odyssey serves as AEMS’ major, annual educational event which attracts over 200 participants. The Functional Group meeting process involve 50+ volunteer members and provides education six times yearly through presentations of Topical Focus (current issues discussion), Agency/Hospital Profile and Program Sharing (Central Arizona Region information sharing); and Lunch N Learn (knowledge based learning).
Planning • Community Outreach & Resources • Advocacy Planning is an intrinsic part of AEMS mission. It is a necessary tool to implement all of AEMS’ activities from the Functional Group process to the Board level. Through a collaborative process with the Central Arizona Region EMS and trauma professionals, community outreach and resource coordination are a natural focus and outcome of AEMS’ activities. Advocacy is crucial to our mission as well as for our service to the State of Arizona. AEMS is charged with working together and advocating for the best practices of EMS and trauma care for the Central Arizona Region and statewide.

Individuals who directly contribute to the AEMS organization are recognized with Service Awards. AEMS also sponsors the Aces of Hearts Awards which are peer nominated and acknowledges the good work and service of those EMS and trauma professionals who serve the Central Arizona Region. Our Heart to Heart Awards are presented to citizens involved with lifesaving events.
Management As a non-profit organization, AEMS is managed by an active and involved Board of Governors and Executive Committee. The Executive Director, AEMS’ only paid staff, works in conjunction with the Board and Executive Committee to manage, coordinate, and implement the overall operations of the organization.
