USDF Region 5 April 2019 Update Gosh what a winter it has been here in Colorado! I was lucky enough to see a few of you in California at the Adequan West Coast Dressage Festival and it was great seeing others down in Wellington, Florida when I went down for USEF meetings in March. It has been very snowy and wet in Colorado this winter and we will have green pastures this spring, but I have had very little turnout due to all the mud the last few months and my horses are a bit stir crazy at times. Lots of riding, hand walking and turnout in the indoor recently… That said, the show season is about to start in the northern part of our region and I would love it if the weather would cooperate for that as well!

I had the wonderful opportunity to travel south in March to Tucson, Arizona for the March Madness shows so my daughter had a chance to show a bit before the Colorado qualifier season starts and so that I could have an opportunity to show. The hospitality was excellent; the volunteers, management and officials were so friendly and it was a great chance to visit with other parts of our region and meet more USDF members.

Dressage is winding down a bit in the southern part of the US and gearing up in most of the rest of the country and there are plenty of clinics and educational events to choose from in Region 5. The Santa Fe Dressage group is hosting a great clinic in April with Bill Warren and Bill McMullin and the Pikes Peak Chapter of RMDS is hosting a clinic introducing the new tests with Janet Foy. Mark your calendars! If you are interested, there is more information on both on the Region 5 website. Please be sure to let me know if your barn, GMO, club, chapter or other groups are hosting events and we’ll get them in our monthly USDF GMO newsletter that contains great links to all the Regions and on the Region 5 website. We want to let our members know about as many dressage opportunities as we can. Tucson Dressage has a great symposium scheduled with Laura Graves as well for September!

The deadline for Participating Member Delegate nominations is April 15. Our region will have 5 PM delegates for the 2019 USDF Convention in Savanah, Georgia December 4-7. You can check the status of our delegate nominees by going to the link below. Please check your status to make sure your acceptance is there if you would like to be a PM delegate candidate. If you are not listed and you would like to be a PM delegate, please contact Eva Maria Adolphi at adolphi@burgoyne.com. Please do not commit to be a delegate unless you know you can attend. USDF Region 5 May 2019 Update We just finished a very productive set of USDF Executive Board meetings in Lexington, Kentucky. Lisa Gorretta did a great job leading her first set of in person meetings as President and lots of information was covered.

Sites were selected for the 2020 Regional Championships and will soon be released to the membership by USDF. The agenda kept us busy for over a day and a half but it’s great to see the progress that was made. I had the pleasure of starting the first morning off with a nice walk around the lake outside the Rolex Stadium, visiting a few of the cross country fence complexes that were set for the Land Rover 5*, and walking down around a few of the organizations that call the Kentucky Horse Park home. Sadly, it was raining on the second morning so we didn’t go for a walk.

There are many educational events around our Region so if you’re not spending a weekend with family or showing, consider supporting one of our well-organized and great educational opportunities sponsored by the local GMOs (Group Member Organizations) such as Arizona Dressage Association, Tucson Dressage Club, Utah Dressage Society, Rocky Mountain Dressage and so forth. Mark your calendars and head south September 28-29, 2019 for a wonderful symposium with Laura Graves. Check the Regional updates each month for other educational activities coming up.

Soon our potential candidates for the 2019 FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships will be finalized. As I write this in mid April, we have 4 declared Juniors and 2 declared Young Riders. We had hoped to have enough folks to field two full teams but it is a large endeavor and expense to take our teams to New York, so it might be a smaller year. It’s the experience of a lifetime for our Youth and if you would like to contribute or help with their fundraising efforts, please contact Joan Clay, our Region 5 Jr/YR FEI coordinator at jnclay@comcast.net or 970-420-0877. These young adults work very hard, as do their parents, trainers and friends and every little bit of support is greatly appreciated. The 2018 Flagstaff Show is the only show that created a loss of $ 1,800 for the 2018 recognized shows.

7. 1st VP - Recognized Shows Report– Kathy Smith Western Dressage in the Desert, the first event proved to be a Success ->23 rides.

The Spring Celebration Show at Westworld was a great Success, 150 horses were present, 346 rides were executed.

It was suggested to broaden the Fall Fiesta Show and offer also Western Dressage as a separate show again, but offering classes on the same weekend. Details will be discussed during next show committee meeting and proposal will be presented to the board.

The paid position during shows need to be revised and more transparency in the Judges show costs is required. Official contracts need to be sent out to the Judges for Official and Schooling Shows.

8. 2nd VP – Schooling Shows Report - Michell Combs Thank you to Susan Skripac for running a very successful ADA Schooling Show at Bar A & Dale Creek in March.

Cynthia Ganem pointed out that Schooling Shows are ADA’s bread and butter, the board members agreed to provide more schooling show dates, also offer Western dressage classes and improve communication to the membership. A new show schedule to be published soon. A date for the Members Only Schooling show at Westworld has been secured-September 29, 2019.

Rules Committee – Betty Drake has resigned from serving on the board, but will continue working on the articles and the Bylaws for us until it is finished. She will not be attending the meetings, unless we need her to.

12. Volunteer Committee – Kathy S./Heather B. 13. Awards Committee Report – Maeike Zoet Maeike and Nicole were given a big thank you for again doing a fabulous job with the water presentation and with the great selection of prizes for the competitors.

14. Futurity Committee Report –Susan Skripac We had one entry for futurity. Maeike made arrangement for ribbon and cooler. Sadly, the Futurity competitor withdrew at the last minute. Michell Combs pointed out that ADA needs to advertise early and often for next year.

15. Schooling Shows Committee Report- Susan Skripac Michell Combs suggested to raise the L-Graduate’s fee. The current $175.00 fee was implemented in 2013 and has not changed since then. So, for whatever the Board’s recommendation may be, fall 2019 or spring 2020, she believes that 7 years later an increase is important. She also pointed out that USDF added a requirement for continuing education in order to maintain the L Graduate credentials. She will present the board with an official proposal later (and abstain from voting) but suggests for a 5+ hour judge day: L Graduate $175, L Graduate with distinction $200. USEF license $215 with permission not to exceed $350 without board approval if we hire R or S judge, for example, in the members only schooling day.

ADA would ask for a reduced fee if less than 5 hours. This may mean we need to slightly increase the non-member, class or office fee on the schooling show sign up form.

The idea was brought forward to expand the Fall Fiesta Show with an ADA members only schooling show on Friday. No motions at this time.

16. Education Committee Report – Sarah Lindsten. No report.

Cynthia Ganem motioned to award and accept the scholarship to Kara Finnegan – AA Michell Combs – AA, Cyndi Jackson – Open. Kathy Smith second the motion. Board accepted the motion. Ann Damiano will send out the communication to the recipients.

17. Fundraising Committee – Kay Lorenzen. No report. Thanks to Kay’s efforts the Spring Celebration Show had a successful outcome in regards to fundraising as every class in the show was sponsored. The board appreciates the support of our membership!

New Business: 18. Review licensed shows for the 2019/2020 season 19. Discuss educational programs for 2019/2020 and start publishing them to the membership.

20. Review all Board Members duties/assignment and clarify our Board Roster.

21. Call to Members – Members may be recognized by the Presiding Officer and may then address the Board regarding issues of concern to the Association. The Presiding Officer has the right to limit the amount of time that each Member must address the Board.

- Arthur Kottas on the Half Pass • Never let the horse put more weight on one shoulder than on the other.

• Any adjustment made during half-pass must be done with the inside leg and the outside rein.

• Make sure you are seated well in the axis of the horse with a little more weight on the inside seat bone.

• Makre sure the horse is bent from head to tail, but do not ask for too much bend.

• Act in an intermittent manner with your inside leg - don't clamp it on.

• Have the same contact on both reins, never abandon the outside rein. Putting more contact on the inside rein than the outside rein will restrain the movement.
