A UA professor said at a talk Wednesday evening that Israel must end its occupation of Palestine to resolve the ongoing conflict in the region. The UA Hillel Foundation hosted the talk, called “Israel, Hamas and the Palestinians; Conflict Resolution or Conflict Management.” The speaker was Asher Susser, professor of Israel studies. A joint event between the foundation and the Arizona Center for Judaic Studies, Susser’s talk presented his view on the best course of action for Israel in light of the most recent hostilities with Hamas. Susser said he believes that the only way to bring an end to the current hostilities is for Israel to end its occupation of Palestine. “There can be no longterm cessation of hostilities if the occupation continues,” Susser said. “So there must

Increased stipends, philanthropy events and project requests were part of the ASUA Senate’s agenda Wednesday evening at its weekly senate meeting. Pauline Lam, executive director of the Wildcat Events Board, began the meeting by discussing stipends. “I am requesting to increase the stipend for my directors because they do not receive as much as they should,” Lam said. “They are doing a lot for the student body and creating really big events for students to attend.” Lam expressed her concern that the Wildcat Events Board directors do as much work as the associates but do not receive equal

immediately prior to the debate. Ducey’s key point during the debate was his experience as a businessman and how he is looking to “jump start” the economy. DuVal said he is against any budget that cuts additional money from public education. “I am calling for us to begin funding our schools immediately,” DuVal said. The first issue debated was the budget deficit that Arizona faces. Resnik was particularly confrontational on this subject because both candidates laid out ideas, but neither offered specifics on where they were

Chase reinstalls flags after 75 years A historic moment will take place at the Chase Building, Tucson’s first skyscraper, today at 9 a.m. for the first time in 75 years. Flags for the Flagless, an organization that installs flags on unused or abandoned flagpoles, founded by Tucson police officers Charley Foley and his partner Bradley Clark, arranged the ceremony. Two American interment flags that draped the coffins of Tucson World War II veterans, Alvin E. Miller and Joseph C. Yanek, will be raised at the skyscraper. The flags were donated by the families of the veterans, Miller’s son and Yanek’s widow, in an effort to bring them back to life. Crystal McGuire, designated broker at the Danmarben Group, is directly involved in this morning’s ceremony. The Danmarben Group got involved with Flags for the Flagless after they requested to reinstall flags on the Chase Building. “They left a historic picture with my staff saying that they would love to put flags back up, so they initiated the conversation,”
DEMOCRATIC GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE Fred DuVal said he doesn’t want any more money taken from education. Republican gubernatorial candidate Doug Ducey’s platform is centered on jump-starting the economy.

Ortega also talked about a philanthropy event he called “Foam 5.” He said that the people running the event were on the UA Mall

Arizona gubernatorial candidates Republican Doug Ducey and Democrat Fred DuVal met last night to answer questions on, among other things, Arizona’s education system. The first gubernatorial debate of the election season was moderated by Brahm Resnik, a 12 News anchor and host of “Sunday Square Off.” Each candidate began his opening statement by fully supporting President Barack Obama on his stance on the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which had been relayed to the country
