UA loses students to SB 1070 By Laura E. Donovan ARIZONA DAILY WILDCAT

Approximately half a dozen people will not be coming to the UA as planned as a result of Senate Bill 1070, which deals with Arizona’s immigration policies, said Jennifer Fitzenberger, director of external communications. This news comes about two weeks after Gov. Jan Brewer signed the bill into law.

“Families have e-mailed us on behalf of the students,” Fitzenberger said. UA President Robert Shelton wrote in an e-mail last week,“We have already begun to feel an impact from SB 1070.The families of a number of out-of-state students (to date all of them honors students) have told us that they are changing their plans and will be sending their children to universities in other states.” “This should sadden anyone who cares

about attracting the best and brightest students to Arizona,”Shelton wrote. Jessica Mejia, secretary and treasurer of Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán and a junior majoring in history and Mexican American studies, described SB 1070 as“scary.” “I think this will impact the university because we do get a lot of foreign exchange students coming here,” Mejia said. “I’ve been talking to students since

this was signed by Gov. Jan Brewer, and they’re worried about what this means on campus, if they’re going to be harassed on campus.” MEChA is a non-profit, student-run organization that focuses on Tucson youth and helping them get into college. As a member of MEChA, Mejia has heard a lot of negative feedback on the ENROLLMENT, page 5

Bill 1070 . UAgainst is organizing students from around campus to call on administration and campus police to condemn the law. A rally is being held Wednesday to encourage the UA community to denounce the bill and raise awareness about the bill’s ramifications.

UAgainst is trying to make the UA in effect a “sanctuary campus” akin to sanctuary cities like San Francisco. A sanctuary would be a place where the new law would not be enforced based on racial

The man accused of killing retired UA Professor Mac Hadley in 2006 was convicted of first-degree murder on Thursday. A Pima County jury convicted Marco Chavez, a 35-year-old man from Nogales. He could face the death penalty. Hadley was a professor in the department of cell biology and anatomy in the UA College of Medicine from 1968 to 1997. He continued research in the field until the time of his death. An intruder shot Hadley after he arrived home on Nov. 15, 2006. His car and several possessions were stolen and his house was set on fire. Hadley was 76 years old when he died. Victor Hruby, a regent’s professor emeritus in the department of chemistry and biochemistry, worked with Hadley for almost 40 years. The two became research partners in 1969 and continued hormone-related

Gossip sites allow for legal bullying By Jonathan Prince ARIZONA DAILY WILDCAT As students graduate from high school and enter a university setting, some step up cyber bullying from social networking websites to campus gossip blogs, like TheDirty.com. Brenda High, the founder of Bully Police USA, said, “Once kids get into college, we don’t really see so much of cyber-bullying anymore because they’ve finally matured so to speak. They’re beginning to realize it’s something really bad.” The growing popularity of gossip websites on college campuses proves High’s statement might not be entirely true. Some would claim cyber-bullying is still in full force across college

campuses nationwide. CampusGossip.com and TheDirty. com are two gossip websites that allow user-submitted photos and comments to be posted to sections of the websites. TheDirty.com informs viewers that posts, comments and pictures posted to the website may contain personal opinions, assumption, speculations or falsified information. Submitters to the website remain confidential and give their rights to the pictures to the website when they submit them. CampusGossip.com has recently added a new section to their website called “Raw.” This section allows GOSSIP, page 7
