H

e began as an idea bounced around by two UA students over a few beers half a century ago.

Now he’s a university icon, a YouTube flip cup winner and has 3,000 Facebook friends. He’s on billboards, T-shirts and in video games.

Coinciding with Homecoming, Wilbur Wildcat’s 50th birthday is this Saturday.

“Wilbur has really become part of the institution, and I’m really proud of him,” said 71-year-old John Paquette, who created Wilbur with his then-roommate Richard Heller, now deceased, in 1959.“We were just happy we pulled it off. When you’re that age, you’re immortal and nobody’s thinking 50 years into the future.”

••• Disneyland opened in Anaheim, Calif., in 1955, creating a mascot baby boom on the West Coast. The University of Oregon’s mascot is Donald Duck, and it is believed that artist Bert Anthony originally drew Arizona State University’s Sparky the Sun Devil in the image of Walt Disney, after being fired by Disney.

Being from the Bay Area, Paquette and Heller modeled their first Wilbur on the University of California’s mascot, Oski the Bear, who was“born”in 1941.

Juniors at the time, Paquette and Heller had a costume created at a shop on Sixth Street with about $100 provided by the UA administration. The first Wilbur costume resembled a skinny version of Oski with an American Flag patch on his left shoulder.

In the 1970s, Wilbur went through another renaissance when he became a ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’ sporting his sixshooter and papier-mâche head. This look was short-lived though and was replaced with furry Wilbur in the ’80s.

In the 1980s, Wilbur joined the team and began wearing Wildcat jerseys. Prior to this, Wilbur went through multiple faces in his evolution as the furry wildcat and the rhinestone cowboy.

“I think the introduction of Wilma was a big thing because a lot of mascots are alone,”said James Rozzoni, who was Wilbur from 2005-07.“It’s great playing off of another mascot. It’s double the fun.

“You become great friends because you both love Arizona, you love sports, you love being goofy and having furry fun,” added Rozzoni, who is now a lieutenant in the United States Air Force.“That’s awesome right there. The tradition is great.”

As popular as she became, Wilma’s creation was an accident.

Her costume was originally donated by the Spirit Committee to replace an old Wilbur costume. But the costume, which resembled a leopard or a cheetah, had a more feminine look, and Kurt Gerster, who was Wilbur from 1985-86, refused to wear it.

Thus another Wilbur costume was ordered, and Wilma was born. During Wilma’s first date with Wilbur, she lost her head — literally.

At halftime during a UA-Washington basketball game, Wilma made her entrance. During a dance, Wilbur dipped her with such enthusiasm that her head fell off and rolled away, revealing that the first-ever Wilma wasn’t a female at all, but a student named Franc Brodar.

The first original bobcat was purchased for $9.91 by the Arizona freshman football team in 1915. He was named“Rufus Arizona,”after UA President Rufus B.Von KleinSmid. Live mascots were used on

The bobcats are said to have been kept in a den below Arizona Stadium where one apparently died.

“You can see his bones in the dirt. It’s kind of gross, but it just adds to the tradition,”said Foxcroft, who is currently going to school in Las Vegas to become a physical therapist.“It’s dirty. It’s the armpit of Arizona Stadium, actually. But that’s what a Wildcat’s den is. It’s dirty and unkempt.

But we’re OK with it.”

The den is now used as a changing station for the current Wilbur. When former Wilburs return, they traditionally visit the den and sign the wall, a ritual started by Bill Waynick, who was Wilbur from 1988-92.

“The den wall is such a huge collage,” Rozzoni said.“You really lose yourself in it. It’s like hieroglyphics.You look at it and you’re like,‘Oh, there’s that Wilbur from back then.’ If they ever tear down that stadium, they’re going to pull that out and put it in the Eddie Lynch Hall of Champions in a glass case.”

••• Wilbur is a part of many campus traditions, which will continue to evolve for as long as the UA exists. And it all started with an idea from a couple of students over a few beers.

Since moving back to northern California, Paquette doesn’t see many UA athletic events. But when the Wildcats are on TV, or they make their way to the Bay Area to play Stanford or Cal, Paquette is watching with his wife, Joy, by his side, 50 years back in time.

“I always look for Wilbur, and I’ll tell Joy, ‘There’s Wilbur! There’s Wilbur!’”Paquette said.“There’s my son, my firstborn.”

We may not be Yale, but the UA has had its share of famous — or infamous — graduates. Here’s some of the more notable people who tramped across the same Mall and nodded off through the same early-morning classes as you, once upon a time.

Annika Sörenstam. Often called the best female golfer ever, Sörenstam attended the UA from 1990 to 1992. Sörenstam, now 39, retired last December, the same month she gave the 139th Commencement address at the UA. Bob Dole. The retired Kansas senator and 1996 Republican candidate for president, best remembered for his unsettling habit of referring to himself in the third person (“You’re going to see the real Bob Dole from now on”), attended the UA from 1948 to 1951.

UA spills on beer policy

Geraldo Rivera. Long before commencing his noisy career as a journalist, the New York-born Rivera played varsity lacrosse as a goalie at the UA. David Foster Wallace. Author of the famously long and difficult novel “Infinite Jest” — part of which takes place on the UA campus — as well as a host of tongue-twistingly verbose, insightful essays.

Wallace, who died in 2008, received a master of fine arts degree in creative writing in 1987.

Kate Walsh. While it would have been amusingly ironic to report that she studied medicine, the “Grey’s Anatomy” actress studied theatre arts at the UA in the ’80s.

Jerry Bruckheimer. The multimillionaire producer got a degree in psychology with a minor in algebra. That’s right, the guy who made “Black Hawk Down,”“Armageddon” and “Beverly Hills Cop” got a minor in algebra. So if you can’t pass it, there’s no excuse.

Kourtney Kardashian . The TV personality and socialite (it feels wrong to call her an “actress”),best known for her part in two reality shows, got her degree in theatre arts from the UA. Nicole Richie. Yes, that Nicole Richie. The actress best known for being friends with Paris Hilton (who’s best known for being friends with Nicole Richie) attended the UA for two years, studying art and media.

A few people you might have assumed were alumni, but aren’t: John McCain. Arizona’s most-famous contemporary politician attended the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis.

Lute Olson. The legendary basketball coach got his degree from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minn.

Robert Shelton. The president of the UA has degrees from Stanford University and the University of California, San Diego.

By Michelle Cohen ARIZONA DAILY WILDCAT If you’re planning on drinking beer during Homecoming this weekend, there are a few rules you need to know.

Most importantly: If you want to drink beer, you need to go to one of six beer stations run by the Arizona Alumni Association , organizers said. “(The rule’s) more stringent than what it used to be,” said Alumni Association president Christopher Vlahos .

“Student organizations could no longer be in charge of selling their own alcohol. Alcohol will still be sold on campus but you have to buy it from the Alumni Association.”

The policy was changed after the State Liquor Board said the high amount of underage drinking was unacceptable, Vlahos said.

University of Arizona Police Department Sgt. Juan Alvarez said that, because of the new policy, underage drinking hasn’t been a problem at events like homecoming.

“It hasn’t been a problem because generally they designate an area on the Mall for people,”Alvarez said.“If they want to drink they have to present ID and get a band, so it’s controlled in that respect other than normal tailgate procedures.

If you’re planning on buying beer, here’s what you need to know: — Bringing alcohol into the event isn’t allowed.

— Beer tickets, or tabs, can be purchased at the event at six beer stations marked with red balloons between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

— Each beer ticket costs $4.

— You will need to show a valid driver’s license to get a hand-stamp and a wristband.

— You are only allowed one beer at a time and two beers during the first two hours.

— Two additional beers are allowed after 11 a.m.

— The last beers will be served at 1:15 p.m.

— Refunds aren’t available for unused tickets.

Couple donates $10 million E-mail Alumni grant Arizona Athletics funds to help build football facilities

An El Paso, Texas, couple announced today that they have donated $10 million to the UA athletics department and its facilities improvement plan, the largest single gift ever given to Arizona Athletics, said Athletic

Director Jim Livengood.

The donation from Jeff and Sharon Stevens, both Arizona alumni, will be primarily spent toward the football team’s northern end-zone improvement plan, which has an estimated cost of $85 million.

“There’s an old saying …‘Extraordinary people do extraordinary things,’”

Livengood said at a press conference yesterday.“That’s exactly why we’re here today. It’s a commitment, a belief and confidence in the future of our program.”

A campus technology spokesperson said that the problem which triggered the longest-ever WebMail outage earlier this week has been isolated and temporarily solved.

“Things seem to be a lot more stable now,” University Information Technology Services Senior Director Limell Lawson said.

The problem, Lawson said, was with the “front-end servers,” the computers that manage WebMail log-in and other services. The servers, never meant to handle the high volume of users they currently manage, crashed unexpectedly early Monday, she said.

Although the outage occurred concurrently with the opening of CatMail, the new student e-mail system operated by Google, Lawson said the new system was only one of many things to push WebMail to the breaking point.

Nevertheless, UITS officials shut down the CatMail migration after only 36 hours to ensure that the WebMail crash was not related to it. The delay caused no major problems for the migration and will not result in a pushback of the final date to transfer to CatMail, Dec. 19, Lawson said.

Still, she said, “We would have liked to leave that window.”

For the time being, backup servers have been activated to enable WebMail to operate until the disabled ones can be repaired.

Doctors believe certain cancer patients can safely go untreated

By Jennifer Koehmstedt ARIZONA DAILY WILDCAT Prostate cancer patients may be receiving unnecessary treatment for tumors that would have never progressed, a recent study conducted by John Hopkins University reports.

The study gave cancer patients with small tumors the option of prostate removal or “active surveillance,” in which doctors monitored tumor growth without resorting to surgery. The study found that of the men who chose active surveillance, only 20 to 30 percent of their tumors progressed.

Screening tests for prostate cancer detect not only potenitally lethal but also benign tumors that would cause no problem if undetected, as stated in the article entitled “Rethinking Screening for Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer,”published in The Journal of the American Medical Association.

The Prostate Specific Antigen test, the method for testing prostate cancer, is responsible for many cases of unnecessary cancer treatment, said Dr. Peter Lance of the Arizona Cancer Center.

The use of active surveillance instead of surgery is not a new idea, Lance said.

“There’s nothing new or particularly original about the John Hopkins study. This is a discussion that’s been going on for a number of years. There is an approach called Watchful Waiting,”he said.

Though this has long been an option, Lance says that many men still opt for surgery.

“There are other men who have an abnormal (Prostate Specific Antigen) test and get a prostate biopsy which suggests that they may have some cancer in their prostate glands, and they decide to get rid of that cancer even though that cancer perhaps isn’t going to do them any harm.

So, they undergo surgery because they don’t like the idea of any cancer being left

Police hunt assault suspect

By Will Ferguson ARIZONA DAILY WILDCAT University of Arizona Police Department officers are searching for a man in connection with an attempted assault on a female student early Sunday morning.

The student was walking alone close to Arizona-Sonora Residence Hall around 12:55 a.m. when a man approached her and grabbed the student around the waist, according to a campus alert issued by the UAPD. The student fought back and hit the suspect with her left fist, who released her and then attempted to grab the student’s purse, the alert said.

The student ran away from the man and into Arizona-Sonora, the alert said.

The man is described as being approximately 5-foot-10 and 190 pounds, wearing a khaki-colored hooded sweatshirt. Anyone with information on the suspect is encouraged to contact UAPD.

By Tim McDonnell ARIZONA DAILY WILDCAT The dim yellow sodium lamps lining the UA Mall have lit up countless tailgates, soccer games and vendors. But last night the lamps illuminated something never before seen on campus: hundreds of cheering students in their underwear.

In what organizers called an overwhelming success, the first-ever Undie Run took off on the Mall, with official estimates placing the number of barely-clad runners at more than 300.

“This is more than I thought would be here, no lie. And we got more coming,” organizer Jamal Boddie, a journalism senior, said before the event.

The run, Boddie said, was meant to bring students together to kick off Homecoming Weekend and raise clothing donations for local charity.

The course followed a path from the Campbell Avenue end of the Mall, past Old Main, down University Avenue to Euclid Avenue, and back again.

As students stretched to warm up, many could barely contain their excitement.

“It’s one of the most epic things ever,” said material sciences freshman Brian Akpan .

While most students said they felt comfortable showing skin, the main concern among many seemed to be the physical exertion required for the fast-paced run.

“I’m nervous because I’m a slow runner,” said psychology freshman Tia Sutton .

Bystanders watched in amazement as the crowd made its way across campus.

University of Arizona Police Department bicycle officers on the scene said there were no incidents but declined to comment further.

Twenty minutes later, the run was over and the crowd dispersed, leaving behind several overflowing boxes of donated clothes and the groundwork for what Boddie said he hopes will become a long-time campus tradition.

“From the looks of it, we gotta do it again next year,” he said.

Man dressed as Breathalyzer cited for drunk driving OXFORD, Ohio — An Ohio man dressed as a Breathalyzer test for Halloween found himself blowing into one after police stopped him for allegedly driving the wrong way without headlights on a one-way street. Oxford police said they stopped 20-year-old James P. Miller on

Halloween night and found beer in his front seat and in the trunk.

BOSTON — The winner of the reality TV show “Big Brother 9”is headed to federal court for a detention hearing on a drug charge.

Adam Jasinski, of Delray Beach, Fla., is charged with attempting to sell 2,000 oxycodone pills. He is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Boston on Friday.

Jasinski was arrested in North Reading on Oct. 17 after he allegedly showed a government witness Adam Jasinski two plastic bags filled with oxycodone, a prescription painkiller that can cause dependance.

Jasinski won $500,000 on “Big Brother 9” in April 2008. In an affidavit, a federal drug agent said the 31-year-old Jasinski told him he had been using his winnings on the CBS reality show to buy thousands of oxycodone pills and resell them along the East Coast.

Maine voters reject gay marriage law

Equality took it on the chin Tuesday. Voters in Maine repealed a state law that would have allowed same-sex couples to wed. This defeat for marriage equality cuts particularly deep as The New York Times has referred to the New England area as “more accepting of same-sex marriage than any other region of the country.” It also comes on the heels of California’s voter-approved ban on same-sex marriages in May. Only five states have legalized same-sex marriage. The Maine election sends the message to advocates of marriage equality that they will continue to face an uphill battle in convincing the U.S. that same-sex couples are entitled to the same rights as everyone else.

Arizona passed a gay marriage ban in 2008.

Straight people, odds are good that someone you know and care about is gay. You have at least one friend, relative or co-worker who is gay. If that’s the case, this election, and every election with similar results, should make you angry. There are people you know who, through no fault of their own, have fewer rights than you do. They aren’t allowed, by the law, to live the lives they would choose. And that’s not right. Nobody should want that for anyone.

It will be hard, but we can change the tone one conversation at a time.

People are people. By and large, they want the same things. If you believe that people should be able to spend their lives with those they love, regardless of gender, then say so. If challenged, stand firm. There is nothing harmful, deviant or subservise about love and commitment, nor in state recognition of that commitment. That needs to be said again and again until there is real change in this country.

And change can’t happen without straight allies who are willing to say what they know is right, in class, in coffee shops and in line at the supermarket.

As for the voters of Maine, for stalling the march of progress, they receive a fail.

Election results a setback for education

Tucson voters rejected proposition 401 budget override measures which would have provided more funding for the Tucson Unified School District. A school district election may seem far off from student-life at the UA, but the results represent a disturbing trend that all Arizonans should care about. Arizona voters have a developed a nasty habit of putting their pocketbooks before school books.

TUSD Superintendent Elizabeth Celania-Fagen told the Arizona Daily Star the district will now likely have to cut programs once considered“natural”to the K-12 experience. This means that children in Tucson may soon have to go without full-time counselors, librarians, art, music and P.E. Even more disturbing, Fagen openly admitted, “We’re to the point where we’re not providing the level of education that we think is just part of a free and appropriate education.”

Blame it on the economy, perhaps, that voters were skittish about the possibility of increased taxes, but education is an investment in a community’s future. Consider the example of the UA. How can the university recruit all-star faculty to a city where their children would be denied access to the basic staples of childhood education? What company would relocate to that kind of community? Not many.

And state universities themselves have also suffered punishing budget cuts at the hands of the Arizona State Legislature.

Administrators like Fagen and President Robert Shelton cannot fulfill their mission alone. They need support from the voters and elected officials of this state.

According to the UA Factbook, about 25,000 of the 35,000 on campus are Arizonans. They’re going to graduate, look for jobs and eventually start thinking about starting families. How does this state plan to keep them here if there is no future for their children? For failing to prioritize education, Tucson voters get a fail.

No excuse for WebMail failure

Most students and staff members didn’t need to read Tuesday’s Wildcat to learn about the WebMail outage, which was reported as the longest in its six years of use.

Major WebMail delays on Monday lasted for nearly 10 hours. Unfortunately, there were further delays on Tuesday

morning.

Technology has pervaded every aspect of modern life, and university e-mail accounts are crucial educational tools. Students use their UA e-mail address to contact professors and other students, e-mail and save documents, communicate with professional sources and a myriad of other functions. Students don’t always create a back-up plan in case their e-mail account is down for up to 10 hours at a time, and they shouldn’t have to.

Associate Director of the University Information Technology Services-Frontline Services Thomas Rees told the Wildcat that the major outage highlights the need for a new e-mail system, which the UA has just begun to adopt. This was not the first time students have experienced WebMail difficulties, especially this semester, so Wildcats can only hope that CatMail will be more competent and reliable. For the slow-moving fix, WebMail gets a fail.

Just wanted to send a quick thank you and kudos for Anna Swenson’s article on being average. I think it is a great insight you have. As a child who was always told I was special and smarter than most, I have struggled to not be let down when I am just average.

I learned very early on that trying to be better than everyone was more distancing than it was connecting. I am now very careful with my four year old in letting her know how loved and important she is, but not better or worse than anyone else. Here’s to a fruitful and “average” journalism career for you!

Tuition article an important story in the Wildcat

I am writing in response to the article “Fighting for in-state tuition,” which was published on Oct. 30, 2009. It is, in my opinion, clear that university tuition has become unreasonably high and this article is evidence that I am not alone. The simple fact that students feel like they have to become residents of Arizona just so they can afford to get an education is appalling. In today’s world, an education is essential to getting a decent job and living a financially-stable life. That being said, it is a wonder that the university and the government are making it so difficult for students to achieve the higher education necessary to accomplish those goals.

I am a member of the Arizona Students’ Association and it is our goal to advocate on behalf of all the students here in the state of Arizona. Part of that includes doing all that we can to ensure that anyone who wishes to acquire secondary education has the opportunity to do so, regardless of financial setbacks. Currently, there is a bill waiting to be presented to Congress called the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2009. If passed, this bill will grant $87 billion in federal financial aid for students. Needless to say, it will make a huge impact on the lives of thousands of students if it is passed. Students, if you are in need of financial aid, write to our congressman and explain to them how they can make a huge difference in your life.

If the university is making it so complicated to achieve instate tuition so much so that there are students who can’t afford a full load of classes, then it needs to reassess its purpose as a public institution. The primary focus of every university should be to educate those who wish to expand their minds and their opportunities.“Fighting for in-state tuition” is an important article because it shed some much needed light on an obstacle that thousands of students at the UA face. It is essential that this issue be publicized because it cannot be resolved if it is ignored. The UA is a wonderful university, and it is my belief that every eligible student deserves the opportunity to

study here, regardless of his or her financial situation.

Stolen newspaper reporting has destroyed Daily Wildcat’s name

I find the Arizona Daily Wildcat’s coverage about the “stolen papers case” to be wrong and nearly libelous.

I agree that whoever took the news committed a wrong, and did abridge the First Amendment. The Arizona Daily Wildcat and the university as a whole is completely justified in being angry at this.

It is a completely different manner, however, to continuously libel and otherwise make judgment against the fraternity, the fraternity members and the University of Arizona Police Department.

The fraternity and fraternity members have yet to be found guilty of a crime. If these fraternity members were instead arrested for doing something the Daily Wildcat was for, the paper would be claiming the fraternity members are “innocent until proven guilty.”

This can be seen with the recent chalker events. The Wildcat was all for defending the chalkers writing on buildings even though, by the rules, they were in the wrong.

To also accuse the UAPD of being negligent is a very strong charge. Where is your proof? How is the UAPD negligent in not pursuing a case that has little evidence to start with? The UAPD has stated that the evidence they had was only a piece of homework with names on it. What does the Wildcat want the UAPD to do? Enter into those students’ rooms and start searching for evidence? What about the rights of the fraternity members to no unreasonable search and seizures?

Is the Wildcat advocating infringing on one constitutional right to protect another?

Finally, has the Wildcat considered that the involvement of the newspaper and its reporters “playing detective” may have compromised additional evidence that the UAPD may have obtained?

Why is the Wildcat not asking law students and professors about the legalities of using contaminated evidence for prosecution?

In conclusion, I find the Daily Wildcat has severely damaged its reputation by not reporting the news fairly and honestly. I believe that the biased reporting of this event is self evident, and should cause concern to the readers of the Wildcat. If we cannot trust the Wildcat to have fair and honest assessments of the facts, what good is the newspaper other than a bulletin board for the next fad at the university? I guess the old quote is right, “Never pick a fight with people that buy ink by the barrel and paper by the ton.”

For those about to spend, we salute you Daniel Greenberg columnist

L

ast Tuesday, our community was dealt a terrible blow when Proposition 200 (for the numerical augmentation of the Tucson Police Department) was defeated.

True, one may argue that there are already plenty of officers in the department’s ranks. Some might also contend that the TPD should prioritize its duties so that officers focus on our safety rather than our sobriety. One TPD officer won’t arrest a cokehead and his posse for sucker-punching a student in his own backyard and breaking his jaw, but another officer will put a man in handcuffs and give him a red tag for having a gathering of three whole people. These arguments are not irrational, but they ignore the core issue of the proposition: supporting our boys in blue with more public funding, regardless of how inefficiently the government uses money.

This is more than just a cause worth fighting for, it is fulfillment of the purpose of government. Indeed, American legislatures on every level have taken on the altruistic duty of spending money to support some pseudo-important cause.

Support the police with more money, support the farmers with market-crushing subsidies, etc. Sure, by and large, said money doesn’t belong to legislators, but trust me, these guys are fighting the good fight. Oftentimes the money isn’t even there to be spent and must be borrowed, resulting in interest that must be paid and added to the list of causes worth spending money on — this just

makes the legislators that much more brave for spending the money.

Now, let me briefly explain how this works. First, you earn money from working. However, you’re not responsible enough to effectively spend some of this money. You may think you are, but you’re not. To help you, our legislators have taken on this burden. And trust me, boy, are these guys smart to be spending half of your money (slightly higher than the 5 percent income tax instituted during the Civil War on those with higher incomes).

Certainly, it may appear that legislators’ specialty is simply campaigning well, but in reality, they are experts in everything. That’s how they know how to spend your money so efficiently. House members and senators, the greatest of the legislators, may say some of the dumbest things imaginable and act completely inept, but they’re just faking it to be more relatable to the average American; in reality they are almost alien to the common man in their nighomniscience and über-benevolence.

I mean, legislators are giving away an unimaginable magnitude of currency to support groups that only coincidentally vote for them.

For example, unions that just happened to give hundreds of millions of dollars in campaign contributions to the Democratic Party (some almost went bankrupt) get lots of money from Democrats, especially when Democrats do things like pass Hulked-up“stimulus” bills.

The most valiant of Democrats such as Nancy Pelosi are also trying their hardest to expand their role in health care, even though it will probably create more problems than it solves, and regardless of how inefficient it may be. I mean, these folks don’t even care about the basic elements of health care improvement such as tort reform — that’s dedication right there. Git-r-done.

Now, we already know that such legislators are inconceivably generous, but just how generous are they? Under the Democratic

Party’s budget, 43 cents of every dollar Washington spends this year will have to be borrowed, and we’ll have to pay it back with interest over the rest of our lives. Over the next decade, net interest spending is set to jump from $173 billion to $774 billion. Wow. That’s a lot of money. The best part is that the“temporary”(read: stepping stone) spending snowballs, gaining momentum for less cuts and more splurging.

Unfortunately, some people don’t like all this awesome spendage. They’re called“conservatives,”and as opposed to Democrats who are known for their throbbing, big, tenderly-loving hearts, these conservatives have cold hearts, which are actually mandarineorange-sized, cast of iron, and tend to chill at a temperature of 3-8 degrees centigrade. At any rate, conservatives are more tight-fisted than open-handed with spending our money, and the problem is that sometimes Republicans kind of act like conservatives (i.e. the Republican health care bill, which spends about 7 percent of the opposing bill and actually would lower the cost of health care and decrease the number of uninsured). When this happens, spending doesn’t stop because it’s really hard to stop tossing greenbacks to boatloads of people who feel like they’re entitled to our money, but spending doesn’t get any higher.

More ominous is that if Americans start to realize that when they support fiscal conservatism and sky-high taxes plummet (such as by cutting taxes along with the Social Security Ponzi Scheme Act), Democrats may try to act conservatively. Then Democrats and Republicans might even compete to spend money more efficiently. I shudder at the thought.

UA’s got the antivirus

By Yael Schusterman Arizona Daily Wildcat While computer viruses hurt people’s computers, software to protect them hurts people’s wallets.

Rather then spending money on antivirus software, an alternative option is Sophos, an antivirus program the UA provides for faculty, staff and students through the university Web site.

Luis Romero, a systems engineering sophomore who works in the computer department in the UofA Bookstore, said the most popular antivirus software being purchased at the bookstore is Norton 2010 for $69.99.

He said some students are taking advantage of the free Sophos software, while others purchase Norton, depending on what they need to use it for.

Roughly three to four students a week buy the Norton software, Romero said.

According to the Web site, Sophos offers the ability to automatically update and maintain the software on many platforms by clicking a link to download it.

After installation is complete, the program will download the latest virus definitions, and then continue to update automatically through network connections to a server at University Information Technology Services.

Sophos has met platform equivalency, timely automated updates and a history of eradicating roughly 98 percent of viruses, Lawson said.

“I’m a huge fan of students getting involved,” Lawson said. “I’ve heard students grumble about Sophos, Norton and every other antivirus software, and I tell them to get involved, speak up and say they want something different.”

The UA Web site says that the contract will end with Sophos in March 2010.

Antivirus software will continue to be offered after the contract expires, Lawson said, although she was unsure whether it would be the same software.

“We don’t have a ton of students, based on statistics and the 24/7 service, that call in with Sophos problems,” she said. “My only way to reason that is that it generally it works. Otherwise we’d be getting constant complaints and support issues.”

Kate Rehkopf, assistant director of UITS, said according to the incident management system from Aug. 24 to Nov. 1, more than 11,000 incidents were resolved and only 53 were Sophos related.

David Wampler, a natural resources senior who works for the 24/7 technology support in the Martin Luther King Jr. building, said that about 20 to 25 percent of the problems the center deals with are virus related.

‘Watchful waiting’ allows for holding off on surgery

in their body,”he said.

Unnecessary surgeries may be a product of Prostate Specific Antigen testing, but this should not discourage men from being screened, Lance said.

“It’s not appropriate to come out and say that men should not get a (Prostate Specific Antigen) test, but what is happening is that the whole approach to screening for prostate cancer is under review and it’s clear that previous claims about the benefits of PSA testing have

been exaggerated,” he said.

As early screenings for certain types of cancers become more common, researchers have found that for prostate cancer, many of the early cancers go nowhere, a recent article in the New York Times said.

Screenings may lead to overtreatment in prostate cancer patients, but these findings cannot be applied to all cancers, Lance said.

“I think that the message that needs to get out is that different cancers behave in very different

ways, so what I’ve just described for prostate cancer does not necessarily apply to breast cancer or colon cancer or uterine cancer or pancreas cancer,”he said.

Lance stressed that even if the tumors found are not life-threatening, screening and early detection are key to cancer treatment.

“Despite what the (New York Times) article says, depending on the type of cancer, in general, the earlier you can diagnose and treat cancer, the better the prognosis,” he said.

Friends point finger at marijuana fiend

University of Arizona Police Department officers were dispatched to the Arizona-Sonora Residence Hall on Oct. 30 at 12:15 a.m. in reference to a report of the odor of marijuana coming from one of the rooms.

Upon arrival, officers observed that the door to the room where the odor was allegedly coming from was open approximately 10 inches. As they approached the open door, the odor of marijuana became stronger. Officers knocked on the door and observed four people in the room. Officers separated the four occupants and questioned them about the odor of marijuana. One subject admitted that marijuana was in the room, but claimed that it was not his. Another occupant of the room told police that he knew who the marijuana belonged to, but refused to give police a name.

The man did point police to a backpack in the room. Officers searched the backpack and found two pipes, a marijuana cigarette, rolling papers, a rolling machine and a marijuana grinder. After police searched the bag, the man that pointed it out admitted that it belonged to a friend. The man gave police a name and officers were able to locate the backpack’s owner. According to police, the man admitted that the backpack belonged to him. He was cited on charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released on scene and the incident has been referred to the Dean of Students Office.

Who needs a pillow when you have vomit?

UAPD officers were dispatched to the Arizona-Sonora on Oct. 30 at 1:01 a.m. in reference to an intoxicated woman. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the woman, who was lying in a puddle of vomit on her room.

The woman was coming in and out of consciousness and was unable to answer any questions. Friends of the woman told police that the woman had been drinking at a house party and they were unsure exactly what or how much the woman had drank.

Tucson Fire Department officers arrived on scene and transported the woman to University Medical Center where she was treated for intoxication. Officers cited the woman on charges of minor in possession and she was released from UMC. The incident has been referred to the Dean of Students Office.

Trickin’? Watch out for cops!

UAPD officers were near the Park Student Union on Oct. 30 at 4:30 p.m. when they observed a male performing skateboard tricks.

As officers approached the man, he fled the area on foot. Police observed as he disappeared behind the north side of the building.

As they got closer, they were able to make contact with the man.

They asked him if he had ever been contacted for skateboarding on university property. The man replied that he had been contacted in the past and had a skateboard confiscated.

Based on the man’s admission and his previous contacts for the same activity, officers confiscated his skateboard. The skateboard was placed into police property for safekeeping and the man was warned against skateboarding on campus.

Yes, a driver’s license would be helpful

UAPD officers observed a green sedan traveling southbound on Park Avenue without headlights light on Oct. 30 at 6:17 p.m.. Police initiated a traffic stop near Park Avenue and Second Street and informed the driver of the reason for the stop.

The driver identified himself with an Arizona identification card but was unable to provide any proof of insurance. A records check revealed that man did not have a valid driver’s license.

Police cited him on charges of driving without a license, driving without headlights, failure to provide proof of registration and failure to provide proof of insurance. His vehicle was towed for a mandatory 30-day impound and he was released on scene.

Projectile vomiting not a great police impression

UAPD officers were on patrol in the area of Vine Avenue and First Street on Oct. 30 at 10:06 p.m. when they observed a man stumble in front of their marked vehicle and projectile vomit. Officers exited their vehicle and made contact with the man.

According to police, the man had watery, bloodshot eyes, the strong odor of intoxicants coming from his mouth as he spoke, and he was swaying back and forth and side to side as he was being questioned.

The man claimed that he had vomited because of “bad food from PSU.� He was cited on charges of minor in possession and released on scene.

Keystone culprit still at large

UAPD officers were on patrol in the area of the Arizona-Sonora on Oct. 30 at 11:44 p.m. when they observed a suspicious male loitering near the bike racks to the east of the building. According to police, the man had a backpack on that appeared to concealing a box-shaped object. Officers watched as the man noticed police observe him. He slowly proceeding to leave the bike rack area, eventually passing through some bushes and joining a crowd of people that were entering the residence hall.

When officers looked at the area where the man had been, they observed a 30-pack of Keystone Light sitting on the ground. The case of beer was missing two cans. Police continued to follow the man into the dorm and watched as he turned a corner towards some elevators.

Officers were unable to locate the man near the elevator area, but they discovered that he left his backpack on the ground. Inside the backpack, officers discovered a calculator with a last name printed on it.

Officers performed a computer search of all registered university students and discovered an Eller College student with the same last name that was printed on the calculator. According to Residence Life officials, a freshman with the same last name was a resident of the dorm. As of yet, no charges have been filed.

Class explores German-Jewish writers

Don’t worry, German 376 is for English speakers, too.

The class, German-Jewish Writers, explores the literary works throughout history by Jewish writers who identify as German.

“Americans think GermanJewish equals Holocaust,” said German studies professor Thomas Kovach, “but there was a good 150 years before that of work, and in fact there was no culture or society in the world where (Jews) felt more at home or committed to that culture as Germany.”

Students may think German writers don’t hit close to home, but they would be surprised to hear many big names who are discussed in this class.

“Marx, Kafka, Einstein, Freud — these are all German writers who shaped the modern world,” Kovach said.

Many Jewish people in Germany converted to Christianity, especially around the time of World War II, so this class focuses on examining the Jewish identity in Germany.

“Kafka, people are always intrigued by since one of the pieces he wrote was about an ape giving a report to an academy,” Kovach said. “One of the ways we can interpret that is it’s parallel to Jewish assimilation. We (Jews) can learn German, act German, but in the eyes of Germans we’re still alien creatures.”

The last three weeks of the class are devoted to modern German-Jewish writers, which is “mind-boggling” to many students.

“They’re surprised that there are still Jews in Germany and they are fastgrowing,” Kovach said. “It’s really inspiring, especially after the war, because they are so committed to getting word out that they are still in Germany, and they deserve to be acknowledged.”

As with any literaturebased class, there is no right answer, something Kovach said “can be frustrating for some students not well-versed in literature.”

Students read poetry, dramas, philosophies and other texts, and the class is mainly lecture.

“It’s difficult material, so it’s more lecture, but students are good at exchanging ideas and comments,” Kovach said. “We have informal debates which can lead to really stimulating discussions.”

Kovach also sometimes shows PBS video documentaries.

The class is graded heavily on attendance and participation, and the only assignments other than the readings are two papers, one at midterm and the other as a final.

“I find it interesting,” said Chelsea Shapouri, an undeclared sophomore. “I wouldn’t have picked these books without the class. And I really find the readings good, but I think this class would be better for people if it was their major, or if they had a lot of interest in the subject.”

Hillel reshapes dinner with Holocaust survivors

Jewish student leaders will continue their yearly tradition today of bringing Tucson-area Holocaust survivors to campus to talk about the Jewish experience over Shabbat dinner.

In what organizers call an effort to close the generational gap, Hillel has reevaluated and reconstructed their annual event,“Holocaust Shabbat: Dinner and Dialogue.”

Hillel has hosted this dinner for several years, said Laura Etter, director of engagement for UA’s Hillel branch, but this year will be different.

“For years we’ve done the Shabbat dinner where we bring the Holocaust survivors to the school, but it’s been very awkward,” said Adam Scott Bellos, a Near Eastern and Judaic studies senior and Hillel member.

“It’s very awkward to sit and eat dinner after hearing such horrific stories.”

Texan couple puts ‘Vision Arizona’ on road to becoming reality

facilities improvement plan, dubbed “Vision Arizona.” The architectural plans and budget must be approved in a January meeting with the Arizona Board of Regents.

The first phase of the athletics improvement plan will relocate the football offices, now in McKale Center, into the new north end-zone facility at Arizona Stadium. Moving the football team to their stadium will open space for later phases in the project, which will include expansions within McKale Center itself.

North end-zone changes will also include stadium lighting, an upgraded scoreboard and an improvement to the Jimenez Practice facility.

“I’ve been excited about this for weeks,” said football head coach Mike Stoops. “For our program to grow … this is a necessity in modern-day collegiate sports. It’s about building a

At the press conference, Jeff and Sharon Stevens addressed the media alongside Stoops, Livengood and Assistant Athletic Director and master’s student Erika Barnes.

“This is a commitment that we started discussing with Erika about a year ago,” said Jeff Stevens, the current director and president of Western Refining, Inc. located in El Paso, Texas. “We felt like it was the right time in our life to make this kind of commitment. We really looked at it not as a building to put your name on, but an investment in the university and the athletic department and the football program.”

generous donors to the university, (a lot) have been a lot of the same people over the years,” Jeff Stevens said. “It’s really our generation’s, our time, to step up and take over what these good people have done.”

The Stevens have also donated money to the University of Texas, El Paso’s athletic department, sharing $6 million with the school to help build a basketball practice facility.

Livengood insinuated that it was good timing to make such a monumental announcement prior to homecoming weekend, as he hopes it will provoke returning alumni to give back to their school.

“These are difficult times, we all know that,” he said. “To step forward right now and to make a gift of this magnitude for this program goes beyond any Wildcat spirit we can talk about.”

Football takes on WSU during Homecoming game

By Brian Kimball ARIZONA DAILY WILDCAT On paper, the No. 21 Arizona football team’s matchup with the Washington State Cougars is a total mismatch. But UA players and coaches will be the first to point out that games aren’t played on paper and the Wildcats (5-2, 3-1 Pacific 10 Conference) aren’t taking the struggling Cougars (1-7, 0-5 Pac-10) for granted.

“To me, they’re a Pac-10 team.

They haven’t had much success, but we certainly know what that’s like, as much as anybody,” said UA head coach Mike Stoops.“We’re not looking to miss a step. We’re looking to get out and play well, get in a rhythm on both sides of the ball and try to put a total effort together. It’s Homecoming, and we want to get out and play well.”

If the Wildcats play well enough to earn the win during Saturday afternoon’s game at Arizona Stadium, they will clinch bowl eligibility for the second consecutive season and for the third time in the last four years.

Arizona finished 6-6 in 2006 but didn’t go to a bowl game.

While a postseason game is an

achievement for any football program, in past years that could have been considered a dream season for Arizona. This year, the Wildcats are driven by more than qualifying for a bowl game.

“That’s not a thought this year, it has been in the past getting to that magical number six. I think the thought of the folks this year is just winning the next game,” said defensive coordinator Mark Stoops. “I think that’s really what we’re striving for is playing well. I think our defense grew up a little bit the last time we stepped on the field against UCLA and just challenged ourselves to be a little bit better. That’s what we’re trying to build on.”

Following a bye week for the Wildcats, the Cougars could serve as a good building block in Arizona’s season. Washington State has allowed an average of 37 points per game this season and given up an average 511 yards per contest, marks that rank 114th and 119th out of 120 Division I teams.

The offense hasn’t helped the team either as the Cougars average 15 points per game and 282.75 yards gained per game, ranking 116th and 114th, respectively.

But despite their statistics being among the lowest in the nation, Arizona doesn’t expect an easy game this weekend.

“Last year Washington State came in and put up 28 points, so I don’t see how anyone can try and look past that defensively at all,” said UA senior safety Cam Nelson.

“They have a young quarterback who’s pretty good, they have a returning running back, Dwight Tardy, he’s pretty good.

“In the Pac-10 you’ve always got to be ready. You never know what’s going to happen any game, just like Washington.” Nelson added.

“We felt like we were going to go in there and win that one and that’s what happens.”

Arizona knows from experience that any team can rise up — see last year’s 36-28 loss to a New Mexico team that finished the season with a 4-8 record — and coaches have been pounding that message home for the past two weeks.

“Don’t miss any steps, the season will take care of itself, and you can only go one game at a time,” Mike Stoops said. “All we can do this week is be 6-2 at the end of the week or be 5-3. That’s kind of where we’re at.”

ANALYSIS

Cougars limping into desert Stats not in Washington State’s favor

By Bobby Stover ARIZONA DAILY WILDCAT To fans who typically enjoy rooting for the underdog, Washington State must be irresistable.

Not only are the Cougars alone in the basement of the Pacific 10 Conference (1-7, 0-5 Pacific 10 Conference), but they are also alone at the bottom of nearly every statistical category. In fact, the only categories in which Washington State does not rank seventh or worse, are third-down percentage, fourth-down conversion percentage and opponent penalties per game.

However, the only other category this season in which the Cougars have been successful is red zone defense, which bodes well for WSU in their upcoming game against No. 21 Arizona, as the Wildcats have struggled in red-zone offense.

That advantage could be the Cougars’ only hope of subduing an explosive Wildcat team.

“This team understands where we’re at and that we have a lot of work to do,” said Washington State head coach Paul Wulff.“(Arizona’s) speed at their skill positions and the maturity they have as a team is going to make them a very tough opponent.

“But our group has a strong attitude, and we know that if we keep working hard, it’s just a matter of time before we start seeing results.”

One aspect of the Cougars’ game that Wulff stressed during his weekly Tuesday press conference was their improvement in offensive line play.

So far this year, the Cougars have

given up 40 sacks, 17 more than the next-worst Pac-10 team.

Last week against Notre Dame, Washington State allowed quarterback Jeff Tuel to be sacked five times, in addition to being knocked around on multiple other occasions. “(Tuel is) holding together pretty well both physically and mentally after getting hit quite a bit last week at Notre Dame,”Wulff said.“But he can’t take as much of the hitting like he did last week otherwise he won’t hold up.

So we need to do a much better job of protecting him.”

Wulff appeared convinced that should his team’s pass protection improve, the Cougars’ results offensively would improve as well.

He said that Tuel is talented at moving the ball down the field, and that giving him protection would showcase that fact.

However, whether they are attributable to the pass protection or not, Washington State’s offensive numbers have not compared with its opponents this year.

On the ground, the Cougars are averaging nearly three times fewer yards per game than their opponents.

Through the air, Tuel and his offense have seen somewhat better results, but they are still being outgained by nearly 90 yards per game.

The lack of offensive production has led to the Cougars being outscored by opponents by nearly three times as well.

But despite what the statistics may show, Wulff is confident that Washington State is only a few key repairs away from becoming a competitive football team.

Players to watch

Keola Antolin, RB — With starting running back Nic Grigsby unlikely to play with a shoulder injury, sophomore Keola Antolin could be the Wildcats’ workhorse this weekend.

With Washington State allowing 220 yards rushing per game, Antolin could have a career day on Saturday.

Brooks Reed, DE — Junior defensive end Brooks Reed was supposed to be an unstoppable force for the UA defense this season. So, far he’s been slowed by an ankle injury but is set to return to the field against the Cougars. Reed is eager to make an impact and he should on Saturday.

Delashaun Dean, WR — Another nicked up Wildcat who is anxious to produce this season is wide receiver Delashaun Dean. Hampered by a slew of injuries — hamstring, ankle and a concussion — Dean is as healthy as he has been all year. Look for the junior to make some big plays against the Cougars.

UA’s keys to the game

Play with energy — If a lethargic Wildcat team shows up to Arizona Stadium on Saturday, they could lose to Washington State.

Even with the Homecoming atmosphere it could be hard to get pumped up to play a team like the Cougars. If Arizona plays with the energy it did against UCLA this game could be a blowout.

Don’t do too much —It might be tempting for UA players to break a big run, throw a long TD pass or go all out for an interception, but trying to force a big play if it’s not there can lead to big plays for the other team. If the each Wildcat plays within themselves, they shouldn’t slip up against the Cougars.

Limit mistakes — The Wildcats dominated the Bruins two weeks ago but five turnovers kept UCLA in the game until the fourth quarter. Arizona’s had two weeks to work on ball security, and if the Wildcats keep the ball out of the hands of Washington State defenders the Cougars should have a long flight back to Pullman.

Football team’s offense boasts good ground game

“Our focus right now is getting consistent execution on both offense and defense,” Wulff said. “We need to start faster and the way we do that is to go out and execute the game plan. That means no missed blocking assignments or mistakes right off the bat.”

“For the most part I feel everyone is doing a good job, it’s just that one guy making a mistake every time,” he added. “If we get all eleven (players) on the same page this weekend then we’re going to start moving the ball down the field.”

Keys for Washington State:

1. Protect Tuel – The Cougars have given up 40 sacks this season. If Tuel is to move the ball on the stingy Arizona defense he will need time for plays to develop.

2. Play together – Too often a perfect play is spoiled by a single player’s mistake. If the Cougars can all get on the same page and execute both offensively and defensively, they have a chance at controlling the Wildcats.

3. Keep Arizona out –The Cougars’ red zone defense has proven effective throughout the season, while the Arizona offense has struggled near the goal line. Continuing the Wildcats’ red zone struggles will be crucial to Washington State’s success.

During the first few seasons of UA head coach Mike Stoops’ time in Tucson, his football team’s offense didn’t really have an identity. When Sonny Dykes arrived three years ago, the thought was that the Wildcats would transform into the “Air-Zona” offense, imitating the offensive scheme from the Texas Tech teams Dykes coached prior to joining Stoops’ staff.

While Arizona does average more passing yards than rushing yards per game, it’s hardly an exclusive aerial attack. In fact, the Wildcats are one of the more balanced offense units in the nation. So how does Dykes decide which way to dissect opposing defenses each week?

“Whatever the easiest thing for us to do is. It changes from week to week and I think that’s what I like about our offense,” Dykes said. “If they’re giving us the run, we run it well enough to be able to run it and if they give us the pass, we throw it well enough to be able to throw it.”

That’s essentially coach-speak for, “We can move the ball through the air or the ground, it’s just depends what the situation calls for.”

The Wildcats’ stats don’t dispute that notion. Out of 120 Division I teams, the UA’s 30 points per game are good enough for the No. 37 mark BALANCE, page 14

But that doesn’t mean they haven’t been thinking about the dreaded road matches since Saturday when they last stepped on the court. “For us, it’s having good practice all week and then going up and stealing some at other people’s places,� said junior setter Paige Weber.

While the end of the week normally means back-to-back matches for Arizona volleyball, the preparation during the week is something that changes for each opponent faced. “We’ve been preparing all week. Normally we prepare the day before a match, but we’ve been preparing since Monday for Oregon,� head coach

Dave Rubio said. “The teams are so even across the board in the conference that every little advantage you can take or you can have could make the difference.�

Taking advantage of the little things is something the Wildcats will have to do if they plan to be successful this weekend. The Wildcats have historically had problems winning on the road in their ultra-competitive conference. Compounded by the fact that there is now at least some familiarity because Arizona has played each team in the Pac-10 at least once, this makes the away matches that much more difficult. “(In the) second round there’s less unknowns.

It really comes down to doing things on your side and execution on your side of the floor,� Rubio said. “There aren’t going to be too many drastic V-BALL, page 14

A platoon of big men isn’t something head coach Sean Miller has in his top hat, and after the Wildcats’ 92-76 thrashing of Augustana College, one of his main concerns was, ta-da, rebounding. “The main things coach said in the locker room was maturity, defense and rebounding,� senior Nic Wise said after the game. “(Augustana is) about the same size as us tonight, and we ended up beating them on the boards but barely. We’re going to play a lot bigger, tougher, stronger teams, more athletic.

We’re going to have to box guys out and come up with defensive rebounds more often.�

Obviously, there was no question which team was more athletic as Arizona found ways to throw down alley-oop passes and jump into passing lanes throughout the night. On the other hand, Augusta didn’t even show their ability to touch the rim.

Those physical skills didn’t translate to success.

While Arizona held a 41-34 rebounding advantage — it could have been more uneven had the Wildcats not missed so many easy layups — its core rebounders often found themselves lost in finding a man to box out. On the same token, Arizona forced the Vikings into a poor shooting percentage, something that padded their rebounding numbers.

That fact was shown in the final offensive rebounding numbers, where the Vikings grabbed 13 to Arizona’s 11. They did so through technique and physicality rather than relying on

pure athleticism, giving the young Wildcat team a fine example of how much work lies ahead. “As scary as it is, to me,� Miller said,“they had their way on the offensive glass. It’s an area of concern for us.�

Who’ll do the dirty work?

Forward Jamelle Horne wasn’t one to misuse his athleticism against Augustana, soaring high for 10 boards in just 19 minutes of play. “Jamelle Horne is right now among our best players,� Miller said.“He played tonight like he’s practiced. He rebounds the ball better than anyone on our team.�

But Miller has yet to find another player to assist Horne on the glass.

Freshman 6-foot-10-inch center Kyryl Natyazhko had six rebounds in 19 minutes, but sometimes found smaller players outworking him. He and fellow freshman forward Derrick Williams, who grabbed four boards in 13 minutes before leaving with an ankle sprain, are works-in-progress in that department.

Learning to play hard 100 percent of the possessions is something the entire team is still learning.

That’s not to say the big men have to do the brunt of the rebounding themselves. Miller hopes they find help from some of the wings. “We want them to go after the ball,� Miller said. “You know, Solomon Hill and Kevin Parrom in particular, we really need those two guys to rebound not only on offense but on defense. “They’re versatile, they’re athletic and they can do it,� he added. “We clearly need them to do it.�

Sophomore transfer stands out in Wildcat debut

For Arizona, junior college transfer Brooke Jackson was the most impressive of the new additions for head coach Niya Butts in the Wildcats’ 75-60 exhibition game win over Ft. Lewis College in McKale Center last night.

The sophomore guard started off the game, and the season, by hitting a three just 13 seconds in. She registered her first doubledouble as a Wildcat. “Brooke Jackson did a wonderful job. She had 17 (points) and 11 (rebounds) in her first outing and you can’t beat that,� Butts said. “Especially from the perimeter from her position. She’s just going in there working for rebounds and making basketball plays.�

Jackson had seven points at the half and added 10 more in the second half to lead in Wildcat scoring. It wasn’t just her stats that made her play impressive. Jackson was constantly on the court, scrambling for the loose ball and grabbing the rebounds that no one else could seem to find. “It was so much fun being able to play together as a whole team,� Jackson said. “We have had a couple injuries so far and haven’t really had a chance to play together as a family unit so tonight was awesome.�

Junior Ify Ibekwe continued to perform at her usual level, recording a double-double with 14 rebounds and 11 points in just 24 minutes.

The exhibition game gave Butts the opportunity to implement her new quick-paced style of offense. The players responded, scoring 14 fastbreak points.

The Wildcats used an uptempo style of play in the first five minutes of the game to take a 10-0 lead in less than two minutes. Arizona would keep the Ft. Lewis Skyhawks, a Division II team, at bay until the Skyhawks went on an 18-9 run

that took the next eight minutes off the clock.

The Wildcats began to play slower, and Ft. Lewis caused a number of turnovers to keep up with the Wildcats. Several missed shots and sloppy play slowed down Arizona’s offense.

The Wildcats walked into the locker room down by 33-31, but would respond coming out of the half. They tied the game quickly at 33 points apiece before once again falling behind as much as six points. “We fought back in the second half and came out and played the way we want to play. We calmed down a little bit and picked up our defense,� Butts said. “I was really proud of the way we fought back. I thought we had a really balanced attack.�

Arizona had a scare midway through the second half. Ibekwe tweaked her right ankle while fighting for the rebound in the post. She would return two minutes later, and her effect was felt immediately. Though limping slightly, she blocked two shots on two consecutive Ft. Lewis possessions, giving way to senior Ashley Frazier and the rest of the Wildcat guards.

The combination of hustle and quick shots bailed the Wildcats out of their scoring drought.

With 11:44 left in the game, Arizona went on a 16-0 run, stalling the Skyhawks point total at 49 for seven minutes.

After building a comfortable lead, the Wildcats closed out the half by continuing its fast-tempo offense. The hustle and quick passes allowed all five Arizona starters, including transfer Soana Lucet and freshman Davellyn Whyte to hit double figures. “I was really excited to see people step up and score,� Butts said.“We have a lot of different pieces that we have to this puzzle.�

The Wildcats will take on Grand Canyon University on Sunday at 1 p.m. for their second and final exhibition game at home before heading across the country to participate in the Iona College Tip-Off Tournament in New Rochelle, N.Y.

Soccer faces final two

After a year of turmoil, the team winds down its season

This weekend, all five seniors will have a chance to leave a lasting impression as they take on Oregon at Mulcahy Stadium at 7 p.m. and Oregon State on Sunday at 11 a.m. on senior day. Senior day marks not just the last home game but the final game in their collegiate career.

“It’s sad but at the same time it’s exciting to play in front of our fans for one last time,”said senior midfielder Jasmine Namdar.“We just want play hard and try to end it all on a positive note.”

Redshirt senior Devon Wharf, is the only Arizona soccer senior who will leave with postseason experience.Though the seniors didn’t win as many games as they would have liked, once they hang their cleats up this weekend, they will be the senior class with the most wins against ASU since the inception of the team.

“I wish we could’ve had a better

record to go along with it, but for two straight years, we’re the best team in the state of Arizona,”Wharf said.

After years of being ASU’s punching bag, the Wildcats have turned the tide and made this the most successful senior class against the Sun Devils. None of the previous players from the soccer program’s 15year history has had the success against ASU like this group of seniors.

Despite losing more games than winning, every senior has a memory that will stick with them for the rest of their lives.

For Analisa Marquez, a Tucson native, just being able to make it for four years after joining the team as walk-on is gratifying enough.

“I’m proud to make it all four years. A lot of people had doubts about how well I would do here,” Marquez said. “I had to prove myself day in, day out. I came through some tough times my freshman and sophomore year. It’s been a great experience to make it this far as a walk-on.”

Busch cites large senior class as key to returning to NCAA prominence

By Mike Schmitz Arizona Daily Wildcat The UA swimming and diving teams will take their first steps towards returning to national championship prowess today at 2 p.m. as they host their first event of the season, a dual meet featuring Wisconsin and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Both the men’s and women’s teams won national championships two seasons ago, but couldn’t reproduce that success last season. The women’s team finished third at the NCAA championships last season while the men’s team posted a sixth place finish.

It will be up to Arizona’s elite seniors to avenge their disappointing 2008-09 campaign and get back to the top of the NCAA. “This is a very unique position that we’re in this year because we have the largest senior classes in all of the years that I’ve been at Arizona,” said 21-year head coach Frank Busch. “I really believe this: as the senior class goes, these teams will go.”

The men’s team will welcome back a strong group of seniors in Jack Brown, Jean Basson and Jordan Smith. Brown

is coming off of a U.S. National Team nomination for his accomplishments this summer, and Basson is looking to defend his Pac-10 and NCAA individual titles in the 500-yard freestyle.

That trio, along with a solid core of sophomores, will look to make another NCAA championship run this season.

“I think the senior class sets the tone that the rest of the team follows,” Brown said.“I think it’s a trickle-down effect. When the senior class is focused and works hard, I think everyone looks and kind of jumps on board.”

Unlike the men’s squad, the women’s group lost several AllAmericans to graduation, including 50-yard freestyle sensation Lara Jackson. But with some solid new group of freshman and transfers, along with a good core of returning seniors, this group has high hopes.

“It was a huge learning experience for us last year,”said senior Ana Agy.“I think the whole senior class this year is really excited to lead the team to try to attempt another NCAA championship.”

Icecats finally take to the Tucson ice

Based on their attitude at the end of practice, you would never know the Arizona Icecats have lost five of their seven games. The excitement, the optimism and the confidence among the team members doesn’t resemble those of an underperforming club.

“You know we’re two and five, but it’s not indicative of the type of team we have,” said senior co-captain Zach Cherney. “You’re definitely going to see much higher quality hockey.”

The Icecats finally get to play in their own barn in front of thousands of fans for the first time this season as they take on Eastern Washington (4-1) tonight and tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.

“The reason people come to play at the University of Arizona is because of the Madhouse on Main Street (Tucson Convention Center),” said head coach Leo Golembiewski. “It’s always nice to be home.”

While the few Icecat veterans are certainly glad to be home, the majority of the excitement comes from the first-year Icecats who have never played at a venue like the Tucson Convention Center in front of 4,000-6,000 fans.

“I can’t put into words how excited I am for this game,” said freshman forward Brian Slugocki.

“From what the older kids have been telling me about the fans, the whole atmosphere, I’m unbelievably excited.”

Ten to 15 Icecats expect to make their career Tucson Convention Center debuts tonight, and every one of them is equally amped. The majority of the new players have never competed in front of more than a couple of thousand fans, making tonight’s home opener that much more special.

“I’m really pumped,” said freshman forward Chad Wade. “I’ve been thinking about it for the past two weeks.”

For a team that struggled with focus and effort at times in Las Vegas two weeks ago, a pair of games in front of their die-hard fans might be the perfect remedy for the Icecats.

“I think the fan base is a really big thing,” he

said.“It just lifts you up a lot more when you have that many people behind you.”

The Icecats fans will be able to see a healthy hockey team tonight, something Golembiewski says he hasn’t even seen yet this season. Golembiewski expects to run four solid lines against the very competitive Eastern Washington squad.

Starting freshman goaltender Dave Herman, who missed the final game against UNLV due to a knee injury, has been practicing all week and is expected to play.

The Icecats will finally have a full complement, and it couldn’t come at a better time. The Icecats need a win in the worst way, and playing in front of their loyal fans at the Tucson Convention Center will undoubtedly help their cause.

“If you can’t get up for these games, you shouldn’t be playing,”said junior co-captain Jordan Schupan.

“We need to start getting some sweeps.”

as smoothly as one might expect from a team coming off two national championships, the Wildcats are excited to get back in the water this afternoon and see what they can do.

“I want to see how my team comes together in the very first competition,” Busch said.“I want to see what their personality is.”

While Busch doesn’t exactly know what he will see in today’s meet, he is quite confident that this group will be back in the national championship discussion by season’s end.

“Both of these teams will be in the thick of things for the national title,” Busch said. “Once you win something, you want to win it again.”

By Michael Fitzsimmons ARIZONA DAILY WILDCAT Improvement remains the theme for the Arizona women’s tennis as they send three players to compete in the Southwest Collegiate Invite in Albuquerque, N.M. , this weekend.

“With the fall season, the key word is improvement,” said assistant coach Ryan Stotland . “We’re looking to build upon what we’ve done so far. So that come January, we’ll be ready.”

In competition for the Wildcats this weekend will be senior Ariane Masschelein , sophomore Sarah Landsman and freshman Elizabeth Hammond .

“Every tournament we want to get better,” Masschelein said. “We work hard during the week in practice and try to use what we learn in

matches to get ready for the spring because that’s what matters.”

Hammond, who made her Arizona debut at the last tournament, added that the weekend provides her with an opportunity to prove herself against talented competition. She also noted the importance of trying to not do too much, as coaches stress improving over winning during the fall.

“For me, it’s about keeping a positive attitude and just doing what I can without having too high of expectations,” Hammond said.

The tournament begins at 9 a.m. today and will conclude on Sunday.

“We were excited to be able to add this tournament to our fall schedule,” said head coach Vicky Maes . “We feel that we need more match-play in preparation for our spring season, and this gives us that opportunity.”

in the country. Arizona is No. 27 in rushing offense (118 yards per game) and No. 29 in passing offense (257 yards per game), which translates to the 14th ranked offense in the nation.

And even after Oregon’s 47-20 throttling of USC last weekend — a game the Ducks racked up 613 yards on the Trojans — the Wildcats lead the Pacific 10 Conference in total offense averaging 445 yards a game.

With Arizona having a high-powered, dualthreat offense, starting center Colin Baxter said it makes games easier on players because it keeps the defense on its heels.

“I think being able to do one opens the other up and I think we do a good job of taking what teams give us,” Baxter said. “If a team is letting us try and run the ball and putting eight in coverage and nobody in the box then we can run the ball. If they try and pack the box we’ll pass the ball.”

Against Stanford, Arizona passed the ball. A lot.

Foles completed 40-of-51 passes for 415 yards and three scores during Arizona’s 4338 win against the Cardinal on Oct. 17. During the Wildcats’ next game, Foles had an off night — he suffered from flu-like symptoms and was responsible for four turnovers — and the ground game picked it up. Led by sophomore Keola Antolin’s second-half performance and a bevy of wide receiver run plays, Arizona pounded out 209 yards and two touchdowns on 46 attempts.

A big reason for the offense’s success is the offensive line. Arizona has only allowed four sacks during the season, the fourthbest mark in the nation. The unit has improved as the season progressed, and is able to open big running lanes or provide good pass protection.

“It’s fun to watch them. What makes the line so excited is when guys break a big run or we get a big throw down field, because they know it starts up front with them,” Foles said. “We try to tell them all the time, ‘It starts up front with y’all,’ and they do a

great job of it and it excites everybody when we run or pass the ball well.”

But UA players and coaches know that the early-season success doesn’t mean anything. While national rankings and good statistics look nice for the moment, it looks better if the Wildcats can remain at that level throughout the entire season.

With a difficult schedule during the rest of the five-game slate to close the season — Saturday’s home game against Washington State, at No. 23 Cal, home against No. 7 Oregon, at ASU and at No. 12 USC — the No. 21 Wildcats will have pick their game up to stay ahead of the pack.

“We’ve just got to continue to keep getting better and keep improving and these guys understand it,” said offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh. “We’ve preach to them about doing their job every single play and that’s what’s happened.

“You never worry about the score,”he added. “You worry about doing your job, all 11 guys, and things will work themselves out.”

Overcoming inconsistencies on road

Arizona is spending more time on individually studying teams, their players and even their rotations. With time running out to make their case for the postseason, knowledge is power for the Wildcats.

“It gives us a look at what kind of offense they’re going to run. It helps us be more familiar with the rotation so that we’re not surprised going into it,”said senior middle blocker Jacy Norton.“We can actually change what we need to in order to play to their level and make sure we can actually play our game.”

Weber agreed, saying that the more times you see a team, the easier it is to get to know their style and what kinds of sets they like to run. If the defense can anticipate the action on

the opponent’s side of the net, Arizona will be able to shift the momentum in the match.

When they were in the familiar McKale Center, the Wildcats defeated both Oregon schools. Away from their safe confines, however, Arizona will have to prove that they can get the job done on the road.

The No. 14 Ducks welcome the Wildcats to Eugene, Ore., coming off a win against state rival Oregon State. Oregon has defended its court well, only dropping one game at home this season.

“They’re very smooth. They’re going to come at you from all different positions,” Rubio said of Oregon’s team. “No one (person) really that is outstanding, but

they’re really good.”

While Oregon is a balanced team across the board, Oregon State’s senior outside hitter Rachel Rourke has been a standout for the Beavers. She broke the Oregon State’s all-time career kills record with a careerhigh performance of 36 kills in the Beaver’s match against Oregon.

In terms of stability, Oregon State has been up and down. The Wildcats will look to steal a victory in Corvallis, Ore., as the Beavers have only won one game at home.

“They’ve suffered some inconsistencies throughout their matches,” Rubio said.

“We’ll see if we can put them in that position to be inconsistent.”

In Brief Campers find skull near Green Valley

GREEN VALEY – Campers made a spooky discovery on Halloween night near Green Valley, about 30 miles south of Tucson.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Office said a group of campers found a“bleached white” human skull about 6 p.m. Saturday.

No other bones were found. Deputies said they think the skull had been out in the desert for some time and most likely belonged to an illegal immigrant.

Because of the rough terrain requiring a four-wheel-drive vehicle, a search and rescue team had to return the next day in the daylight to locate the skull.

The Border Patrol has found more than 200 bodies of suspected illegal immigrants in the Tucson Sector Since October 2008.

Man accused of posing as Yuma high school student

YUMA — Authorities say a Yuma man has been arrested for forgery and sexual conduct with a minor after allegedly posing as a high school student.

Police say 22-year-old Anthony M. Avalos was fraudulently attending Yuma’s Kofa High School and Vista Alternative School intermittently since September 2008.

The criminal investigation began Wednesday after officials at Kofa High brought it to the attention of the school’s resource officer.

Police say Avalos was interviewed and arrested for forgery and sexual conduct with a minor. Details of the charges were not immediately released Thursday.

Iraqi held in Ariz. honor killing on suicide watch

PHOENIX— A court hearing in Phoenix for an Iraqi immigrant accused of killing his daughter because she had become too Westernized has been delayed because he is on a suicide watch.

Court officials say the Maricopa County sheriff’s office didn’t take Faleh Hassan Almaleki to his arraignment Thursday because of his status.

Almaleki was charged with two counts of aggravated assault after police in the Phoenix suburb of Peoria say he ran down his daughter and her boyfriend’s mother with his Jeep on Oct. 20. Police say those charges will be upgraded since the daughter, Noor Faleh Almaleki, died Monday.

The other woman is expected to survive.

Almaleki fled the country after the attack but was stopped at London’s airport and sent back to the U.S.

Neo-Nazis to march against illegal immigration

PHOENIX — The leader of a group of neo-Nazis has announced a planned march for this weekend at the Arizona State Capitol in Phoenix.

National Socialist Movement Commander Jeff Schoep said his group will be protesting against illegal immigration while showing support for the American worker.

Schoep acknowledges his group is a white civil rights organization concerned primarily with white people.

But, he said the group also supports “all legal citizens, all people who are here legally.”

Anti-Defamation League spokesman Bill Strauss said illegal immigration is just a cover for the National Socialist Movement.

Strauss said the best thing people can do is ignore neo-Nazis.

Cargo plane lands in Show Low after bird strike

PHOENIX — A cargo plane managed to land safely Wednesday after a bird or birds slammed into the plane’s windshield.

Federal officials said the impact

shattered the plane’s wind screen, causing minor facial injuries and a bruised shoulder to the pilot and splattering bird blood across the inside of the aircraft.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said the pilot, identified as Roger Wutke, was the only person onboard the Ameriflight Beechcraft C99. The impact was so violent it knocked the glasses and headset off Wutke.

A spokesman for Ameriflight cargo said Wutke was taken to a Show Lowarea hospital where he received eight stitches to his face.

Wednesday’s incident marks the second plane hit by birds. Monday, a Delta Air Lines passenger jet on a flight to Salt Lake City was forced to return to Phoenix after it struck a flock of birds.

Smuggler gets jail term for harboring infant

PHOENIX — A Mexican citizen has been sentenced to more than two years in jail for holding hostage a baby that had been illegally smuggled into Arizona.

Federal prosecutors say 25-year-old Tolentino Castillo-Flores was given a 30-month jail term Monday. He pleaded guilty in August to harboring illegal immigrants for profit.

Authorities say the 4-month-old child was smuggled across the U.S. border and Castillo-Flores demanded payment from the baby’s father last April.

They say Castillo-Flores organized the operation, directed the codefendants to harbor the infant and negotiated an exchange of money for the baby’s release. He was arrested in May by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

The infant was unharmed and returned to the family. Information about the family was not disclosed by authorities.

Ana Agy is a business economics senior and a member of the UA swim team originally from Park City, Utah. She was nominated for Homecoming Court by Arizona Athletics and said,“I think I would be a great queen because I have gotten to know various groups on campus through Eller, athletics and the Honors College.”Her favorite activity during her college experience was the NCAA Championships in 2008 because Ana Agy UA had never won a national championship, she said.

This Homecoming marks Wilbur’s 50th birthday and if she could give him any gift it would be a surprise birthday party for him on top of“A”Mountain.

Morgan Ingram is a marketing senior from Tucson, Ariz. She was nominated for Homecoming Queen by Chain Gang Junior Honorary. She believes she has a good chance at winning and said,“I think Homecoming Week is an exciting time — I’m diverse and I bring a lot to the table. I’m not a part of Greek Life so I’m kind of the black horse in the race.” Her favorite UA activity during her time at the university has been going to Morgan football games. If she could give Wilbur any present for Ingram his birthday, she would give him“a cool new outfit. He’s been rockin’ that hat for a long time; it’s time to jazz up his outfit,”she said.

Shiloh Miller has been cheering for the university for three years, and is a marketing senior. She is originally form El Paso, Texas, and has been nominated for the 2009 homecoming court by the Alpha Phi sorority.

Miller said, “I would be a good Homecoming Queen because I love U of A so much, and Wilbur too.”Her favorite activity has been being a part of the cheer team — “it’s my favorite,” she said. For Wilbur’s birthday, she said she would give him, “a kiss on the cheek because he is such a stud.”

Gillean Osterday is a nutritional sciences senior from Phoenix, She was nominated for homecoming queen by Chain Gang Junior Honorary. She said, “I think Homecoming Queen should be someone involved on campus and I’ve been very involved in many things throughout the years.”Her favorite experience at the university has been being a part of the Chain Gang Junior Honorary because “the people involved formed Gillean the best friendship,” she said. “I know I’ll continue to Osterday talk to them for the rest of my life,” she added. Ashley Tate is a communications senior from Peoria, Ariz. The Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority nominated her for homecoming queen. “I feel like everyone is pretty overqualified, but I simply love U of A. I am their No. 1 fan,”she said. Throughout her time at the UA, she has mostly loved being a part of the Pom Line.“I love dancing and attending all the football games,” she said. If she could give Wilbur a present for his birthday Ashley Tate it would be to guarantee 100 percent that the football team would make it to a“good”bowl game.

Jack Brown is a psychology senior and a member of the UA swim team. He is originally from Atlanta, and has been nominated for Homecoming Court by Arizona Athletics.“Being a part of the swim team has been my favorite activity because I came to the university for that. It’s been the most important thing in my life and my team is my family,”he said. He thinks he would be a great candidate for Homecoming King because,“I think Jack Brown I represent the university in a more direct way than others because when I compete I wear the logo and name on my cap, and compete for our team.”“My present to Wilbur would be to take him up to ASU’s mountain and paint it red and blue. We’d have a lot of fun vandalizing it and showing off the UA spirit.”

David Dickson

David Dickson is a finance senior and been nominated for the title of homecoming king by the Pi Beta Phi sorority. He is from Phoenix, and said,“I would make a

good Homecoming King because I love U of A … I have had a great time during my four years here and I think I would represent our school well.”

His favorite activity has been going to all the football games, he said.“The highlights were definitely rushing the field multiple times, and also going to the Vegas Bowl game,” he said. To help Wilbur celebrate his 50th birthday, he would give him a trip to the Rose Bowl, he said.

Patrick Hryshko is a pre-physiology senior from Gilbert, Ariz. He was nominated by Chain Gang Junior Honorary. Throughout his time at the UA his favorite activity has been spending time with the residents in his residence hall; he is a residence assistant for Babcock Residence Hall. He feels he is a great candidate for Homecoming King and said,“I feel that I embody the Wildcat spirit and Patrick have the ability to connect with anyone on campus.” He Hryshko also said that if he could get Wilbur a birthday present, he would give him a gold watch to symbolize 50 years or make him an awesome birthday dinner and cake.

Tomas Navarro is a senior from Yuma, Ariz. He was nominated by the UA Hispanic Alumni Club for Homecoming King. He is an agricultural economics major who said his favorite pastime on campus has been being a part of the Mariachis of Arizona.“I got to play at Hispanic heritage football games and got to celebrate my heritage,”he said. Playing at those games later guaranteed him an invitation to play at the halftime show of a CardiTomas Navarro nals game. He thinks being homecoming king is a terribly hard job because“you have to embody all of the students … I am very diverse and although I haven’t met all the students I think I am able to capture U of A’s diversity.”His 50th birthday present to Wilbur would be“a mini Wilbur.”He said,“There are already a Wilma and Wilbur so now they need a little one of them.”

Jason Tranel is a business senior, specializing in management information systems. He was nominated for the 2009 Homecoming Court by the College Republicans on campus. Tranel is originally from Pueblo, Colo., and thinks he would make for a fantastic Homecoming King.“I represent the student body the best because I’ve been active in many diversified clubs and have had various leadership roles,” he said. His favorite campus activity has been playing intramural sports Jason at the UA, especially soccer. For Wilbur’s birthday, Tranel Tranel said,“I would give him‘A’Mountain.”
