Pumpkin toss a smash hit

nyone planning to go smash pumpkins this Halloween has a chance to get it out of their system early. Pumpkins of all shapes and sizes will be launched 100 meters across the UA Mall at the third annual Tucson Pumpkin Toss on Sunday.

This year, 15 teams made up of high school students, middle school students and other contestants with a burning desire to build catapults and destroy pumpkins will be competing to win the pumpkin-launching event.

Bruce Bayly, a UA associate professor of mathematics and a co-organizer of the event, said the initial idea came to him when he was sifting through thoughts of what to do with pumpkins come October. The most obvious idea, of course, was to build large wooden catapults and launch the seasonal orange vegetable as far as it could go. A simple concept, but one that required some planning.

“There’s a lot of preparation and design beforehand,” Bayly said, adding that building the catapults requires some knowledge of math and physics. “The reason why I started is that, as a professor, I wanted to get more people interested in math and science to eventually build cool stuff and see how it works.”

The event will be monitored by a team of Raytheon engineers, who will inspect the catapults before their initial launches to make sure the triggers, structures and small

Raytheon Company is sponsoring the event in conjunction with The Physics Factory, the UA and the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement program.

This year, the pumpkin toss will host 15 teams and catapults, a bigger turnout than last year, said Brian Lapham, a founder of the contest and judge.

“I am basically a glorified traffic cop,” said Lapham, talking about his duty to make sure passersby and participants are safe from flying pumpkins.

Since returning teams have had an entire year to tweak their catapult designs, some are expected to launch pumpkins over 100 meters.

Other catapults will launch pumpkins about 10 to 30 meters, Lapham said.

“The biggest reaction we’ve received has been, ‘I want to do this, too,’” Lapham said. “If I had a nickel for every time someone said this, I would be rich.”

Leonard Vance, a co-organizer of the event, estimated that more than 100 pumpkins will be thrown across the Mall on Sunday — for a good cause.

“It’s all really about education and getting kids to learn, while having some … fun,” Vance said.

Contestants will begin moving their catapults onto the Mall early Sunday morning, where engineers and the organizers of the event will inspect the catapults for safety reasons.

catapults and talk to competitors. The toss itself will begin at 1 p.m. After the launches have been measured, judges will meet to calculate their scores and determine the champion of the competition.

The grand finale will involve demolishing a giant rolling castle with melons, pumpkins and other large and destructive vegetables.

Pumpkin remains will be collected from the field at the close of the event by Compost Cats,

an organization run by the Associated Students for the University of Arizona’s Students for Sustainability. The remains will serve as compost material for gardens around campus.

“The funnest part is just the enjoyment on everybody’s face when a successful shot is made,” Vance said.

Tucson’s LGBTQ-friendly hot spots

W

ith the UA’s Coming Out Week in full swing, it’s the perfect time to celebrate friends who have made the decision to come out.

This week is observed annually to raise awareness in the community and demonstrate a movement that has spread all over the world. Regardless of which team you play for, it’s time to celebrate, and here are the best places to do just that:

IBT’s — 616 N. Fourth Ave. Voted Tucson’s No. 1 Gay Bar, IBT’s is a well-known hotspot for the LGBTQ community. The bar is inconspicuous in appearance and so hidden that it’s almost impossible to see it unless you know what you’re looking for. Behind closed doors, IBT’s has blasting music and bright colors splashed everywhere, guaranteeing a good time.

The bar features different specials every night, ranging from drag shows to Taco Tuesdays, and offers reverse happy hour specials every Monday. The atmosphere in IBT’s demands dancing, making it the perfect place to celebrate this week’s occasion.

Brodie’s Tavern — 2449 N. Stone Ave. Brodie’s Tavern has been in Tucson for four years and prides itself on its friendly bartenders and great-tasting cocktails. It offers a variety of drinks while filling the bar with music from a

variety of DJs. With weekly specials, televisions, video games, dartboards and a pool table, as well as a pool outside that bar-goers can use on Sundays, Brodie’s is a little more laid-back and angled for a crowd that just wants to have fun.

New Moon — 915 W. Prince Road Formerly known as Howl at the Moon, this country-dance bar caters to the LGBTQ community with a friendly attitude and accepting atmosphere.

With TVs, food, dancing, pool and darts, New Moon promises an explosion of expression with a country-Western flavor.

New Moon offers different specials weekly and is hosting the official Pride After Party on Saturday, beginning at 10 p.m.

The entry fee is $5.

Venture-N — 1239 N. Sixth Ave. Established as one of the oldest bars in Tucson, Venture-N

‘Gravity’ a must-see on the big screen ALEX GUYTON

“G

ravity” is one of the most visually stunning films in recent memory — to just say “this year” would be a disservice. Movies like “Gravity” are what the big screen is made for.

The film sets the stage with biomedical engineer Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) on a space shuttle mission for the last servicing of the Hubble Space Telescope. This is Stone’s first space shuttle mission — and Kowalski’s last. During the final spacewalk on the Hubble, mission control tells them that debris is headed in their direction. Kowalski and Stone are not able to get back inside the shuttle before the colossal chunks of debris come streaking in.

The shuttle is destroyed, and the two must try to find a way back to Earth.

The plot is a stark one, boiled down to the most basic elements of conflict. This is succinctly stated in an opening-credits screen that ends with the concise statement: “Life in space is impossible.” Stone and Kowalski must survive against a variety of elemental threats, including oxygen depletion, being crushed by gargantuan debris and being incinerated by the atmosphere.

This classic story of man versus nature is situated in the perfect setting: the bleakness of space.

There is not a single other living soul out there in the void, and Stone and Kowalski can’t last long.

The visuals and sounds are the cornerstones of the film, and director Alfonso Cuarón (“Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” “Children of Men”) maintains an element of reality by having no sound in space. For example, when the space shuttle is bombarded and erupts in a cascade of smithereens, one would expect concussive sound, but there is no cacophony of explosions or grating of metal colliding with metal. Apart from the soundtrack and the distressed talking between the characters over their comm systems, the scene plays out in complete silence.

This adherence to realism juxtaposes the film’s visuals and audio in a way that turns the brain on end.

Finally, because there are only two actors maximum on the screen at any time, a sense of infinite loneliness permeates the film. Being suspended in space, thousands of miles away from Earth, is a chilling reality. Although there is plenty of action, the quiet, still moments are some of the most memorable.

For example, one of the most the profound images in the film is an astronaut drifting out into space, completely untethered. A human

helplessly floating away into dark oblivion is a deeply disconcerting thing to behold, and it will stay with audiences long after they leave the theater.

Bullock carries most of the load in the movie, and does so in an extremely convincing fashion. Stone starts off unsure of herself and her surroundings, but gradually gains more and more confidence. Bullock relays the incredible terror of being helpless in space so well that the audience can fully feel it. Her performance runs the gamut of possible emotions, and barely ever missteps. For a film to rely solely on one performance, and for that performance to successfully see the film to its very end, is quite the feat. Clooney also contributes, providing a charismatic, assured and confident performance that contrasts well with Stone’s initially hesitant nature.

So while it may seem almost sinful to shell out cash to see corporate cinema while a local film festival is in full swing, “Gravity” quite simply shouldn’t be missed.

As part of the UA’s “Coming Out Week,” international human rights activist and LGBTQ rights speaker Stuart Milk will be giving a speech as part of a brown bag lunch session. Milk is best known for his role as founder and president of the Harvey Milk Foundation — an organization dedicated to his uncle, Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in California.

Join Stuart Milk as he shares his insight on being president of the foundation, gay rights, politics and the difference the Harvey Milk Foundation has made for LGBTQ individuals.

Saturday Discovery Nights at Biosphere 2, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

As part of its Discovery Nights series, UA Biosphere 2 will be open for extended hours for three consecutive Saturdays. During these hours, the facility will hold family-friendly stargazing sessions and hands-on science activities. For the first time in 20 years, research facilities inside the Biosphere will have guided nighttime tours. No RSVP or registration is needed.

The price of activities and tours is included in the price of admission, $20 for adults.

Tucson Meet Yourself returns for 40th year

ucson resident Katie Naveunxay remembers the days she spent performing as a child at El Presidio Park as free, wild and full of tradition.

Naveunxay began as a young dancer in the festival in 1990, and will return as a food vendor this weekend with the 40th annual Tucson Meet Yourself, passing the traditions she learned as a child on to her own family.

For her, Tucson Meet Yourself is more than a festival — it’s a way of life.

“It brings us together,” Naveunxay said.

“All of our family and extended family, we are there together and we come back because we love this event. We want other people to learn about it.”

Tucson Meet Yourself, according to its website, is a folklife festival that focuses on traditions rooted in a group’s identity, customs and cultural impact. The festival gives cultural groups throughout Tucson an opportunity to showcase their heritage and share their food, dance and artistry with the entire community.

“It’s not like all other festivals,” said Maribel Alvarez, program director. “It’s actually an educational event about cultural diversity, and of course, it’s in a festive mode.

“The real core of it is an educational

mission to bring awareness about the richness of cultural diversity and dignity that these cultures have in their expressive artistic forms,” Alvarez added.

Each year, the three-day festival draws more than 100,000 people, attracting guests with its various food vendors and performers. This year, the festival is set to celebrate 40 years with 143 performing groups and about 55 food vendors, Alvarez said.

The performing artists will showcase their traditions and customs in segmented sections. The festival will feature music from all over the world as well, including European, Country and Western, Latin, Middle Eastern, Pan African, Caribbean, South American, Mariachi and Asian Pacific Rim styles of music, said Musical and Performance Director Richard Noel.

“A lot of times I meet individuals who don’t have any knowledge about people’s cultures or people’s traditions,” Noel said. “Sometimes we take it for granted and we view these people wrong, but when I can appreciate some of the folklife tradition in the neighborhood I live in, it’s a boost for the economy and you truly appreciate what people do and you can support it more.”

Jamaican, Turkish and Russian selections, among others. The wide variety of food allows the community to experience different cultural traditions without leaving Tucson, said Food Vendor Coordinator Alma Kennedy.

“We are a melting pot of different cultures from different countries; everybody’s represented,” Kennedy said. “We share all of our traditions; we pass it on to our kids. We share our culture and our traditions so we can … share our history.”

For some, the event’s significance lies in the opportunity to showcase one’s culture the way they want it to be presented.

“It’s an affirmation of the dignity of every culture,” Alvarez said. “Every culture has their

oung filmmakers Jason Sikorsky, Keith Wagner and Dae Hyun Song have learned that it’s not the story you have to tell, but how you tell it. With stories that are both interconnected and distinctly unique, the three UA film students will showcase their work at this year’s ninth annual Tucson Film and Music Festival.

The festival, which aims to spotlight the work of local filmmakers and artists, will kick off Friday and is scheduled to run through Sunday.

Sikorsky, a May 2013 UA film and television graduate, volunteered at the festival two years ago and noticed that the music video screenings garnered the biggest audiences.

“I realized I was very passionate about music videos,” Sikorsky said.

“Ever since I was a kid, I’d always watch music videos, and I was like, ‘Hey, why don’t I just shoot a music video?’”

The festival will present Sikorsky’s music video for

“Taste of Disarray,” a song

by Hawaiian alternative rock band Ignite the Red, which has opened for The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.

The video revolves around a boy and a girl searching for each other in a post-apocalyptic world.

While the length of a song might not sound like much time, Sikorsky said he’s more comfortable with shorter pieces.

“I like the idea of packing a punch in three to five minutes,” he said. “If you can make a great video in three to five minutes and hold your attention … and just have a really great video to show, I feel like, in some ways, it’s more effective because it’s more memorable.”

Wagner, a film and television senior, found his way into the festival after working with Michael Toubassi, the festival director and head of programming, as an assistant editor and intern at Toubassi’s production company, Upstairs Film.

The festival will screen a short documentary that Wagner made last year.

“Transitions” is the story of Dylan Barr,

Wagner’s best friend and a star triathlete during high school, whose mother was severely injured and whose father was killed in a motorcycle accident last year.

“To keep his dad’s memory alive, he participated in this one race that really was a culmination of their relationship and really carried on his father’s spirit,” Wagner said.

Filming for the documentary was done intermittently, with multiple production details needing Wagner’s attention. But for Wagner, who wants to be an assistant director, this was a welcome challenge.

His mentors said his hard work is evident.

“He seems to thrive in that role as somebody who can really handle the logistical, organizational and managerial side of the process,” said Jacob Bricca, Wagner’s editing professor.

Wagner said he and his team strived to make the best possible film. It was never simply a class project, but something they had a professional and emotional stake in.

“Every decision in the film, everything that went into it, I can confidently say that me and my coproducer and director of photography and editor made with some sort of emotional connection,” he said. “Everything was there for a reason.”

Song, a film and television senior, will also have a piece showing at the festival: a documentary that focuses on astrophotography called “Into the Black.”

The Tucson Film and Music Festival will mark the 10th festival to feature Song’s film. He wasn’t initially receptive to making a documentary, but his professor said she’s glad he did. “[He] dove into the project single-mindedly and ended up with a wonderful short film,” said Beverly Seckinger, Song’s film and television production professor.

Originally enrolled in the Eller College of Management, Song said his vision of film and television has changed since switching schools.

“I was this guy who was trying to stay in the media industry and just make money,” he said.

“When I actually got into BFA, I realized this is a serious business. This is not about making money.

This is about making art and being who you are and finding your vision.”

Toubassi said the UA filmmaking community has always been heavily involved in the annual festival. The collaboration is good for both parties, he added.

“We love alumni, U of A alumni and student filmmakers from university,” Toubassi said. “We like to support and screen their work as much as we can. This year, we were fortunate to have several.”

Sikorsky’s “Taste of Disarray” and Song’s “Into the Black” will screen in the Short Doc Mix at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at Century El Con 20.

Local rock band The Swigs will be one of several acts playing at 2nd Saturdays Downtown this weekend, at the Scott Avenue Stage from 9:30 to 10:30 p.m.

The rock trio includes Henderson on guitar and vocals, Eric Snyder on bass and harmonica and Mike Troupe on drums and backup vocals. The Swigs came together in 2010 during Spillapalooza, a nonprofit concert benefitting the Center for Biological Diversity’s Gulf Disaster Fund.

“It’s been smooth sailing ever since I got those guys in the band,” Henderson said. “I can’t imagine another lineup.”

Henderson said the group enjoys playing live because of the diversity of the audience and often improvises to play along with the atmosphere, making each show different from the last. As a three-piece, he added, there is a kind of intimacy between the

band members and the crowd that makes for fun live shows.

“Trios are really cool, because you sort of get ESP going on,” he said. “When you’re comfortable with the musicians, you start to really play music.”

With its heavy ’70s influence, Henderson said The Swigs’ style is unique to Tucson’s music scene. The genre also gives the band some leeway when it comes to live shows, so each member has room to play around during a set.

“We are kind of a throwback to an earlier age when it was about writing songs with hooks and riffs, and on top of that be able to improvise and play games in the band,” he said. “I don’t think we fit into some file category. We have a very distinct sound; you can tell it’s us.”

Although Henderson admitted that the focus has shifted away from live music in the digital age, he said he believes that the demand to see live music is still high, and that it will stay that way.

“No matter how digitally obsessed we are, we like being connected,” he said.

“People still are hungry for that live, human interaction. We strive to provide that, and to add a little bit of joy in the bargain.”

Let it Come Down was the band’s first album, followed by Johnson Family Values, released in late 2011. The albums are vinylonly release and are sold at the shows and in local record stores. Henderson said that releasing the records only on vinyl was part of an effort to make people listen to the record as a unit instead of as a handful of shuffled songs.

“We’re in a digital age where people think of music as shuffling around on your iPod,” he said. “When I was growing up, you sat down and you actively listened.”

Henderson said that the trio puts a great amount of effort into making sure its lyrics have a deeper meaning, rather than just being catchy.

“We really focus on the songwriting craft, making sure that the song works and that we’re making a statement,” he said. “We’re not a jam band; we’re very song-oriented.”

The trio has been working on putting the final touches on its latest album, Purl.

Henderson said the album name refers to an archaic form of beer that was made without hops, along with the effects of a ripple in water.

“We … have been slowly promoting it, and they aren’t in a hurry to put it out,” Henderson said, “but the songs are done.

It’s going to be another step forward artistically.”

Along with the group’s songwriting, improvisational capability and freedom to rock, Henderson said the group is professionally focused, which shows in its early-morning rehearsal schedule.

“You want to take what you’re doing seriously and believe in it,” Henderson said.

“I suppose we want to do it for an elevation of the human spirit, but you also have to have a sense of humor about yourself. And when you get it, you’re lucky.”

Gay NFL athlete shares experience JOEY PUTRELO Former NFL cornerback Wade Davis spoke on campus Wednesday night about his experience of opening up to family, friends and teammates about his homosexuality. He is one of five former NFL players to publicly come out.

Davis, 36, was signed by the Tennessee Titans in 2000 as an undrafted free agent and later played for the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Redskins. However, Davis never made an NFL 53-man roster and spent most of his professional football time as an NFL Europe League defensive back in Barcelona, Spain and Berlin.

The event was held in the Grand Ballroom of the Student Union Memorial Center.

Wildcat Events Board Speakers Director Kevin Mauerman and Co-Director of LGBTQ Student Affairs Chris Sogge introduced Davis.

“I want to set some ground rules,” Davis said after his opening statement. “First, there are no ground rules. Second, this is not a lecture, this is more of a conversation, so I promise we’re going to have some fun today.”

Davis began his life story by admitting he was a “mama’s boy.” He found football when he was 7, but after games would watch soap operas with his mother.

friends as a kid was called “smear the queer.” In the contest, the “queer” had to grab the ball and score while all of the other players tried tackling him.

Davis said that at the time, he had no idea what being queer meant.

“It was funny that the ‘queer’ was probably

the most courageous person,” Davis said, “but that’s what I learned at 7, what you did to ‘queer’ people — you smeared them.”

Davis said his first time being attracted to someone of the same sex was when he was a sophomore in high school.

“I remember sitting in class and a kid who

walked in — I was thinking, ‘Wow, he’s hot!’”

Davis said. “Then I said ‘Woah, woah, woah what was that?’ And I couldn’t stop looking at him.”

He said he told himself it was not an option to be gay because of his standing as a high school jock. In an attempt to feel better about himself, Davis bullied other students he viewed as different, wore oversized clothes and dated a girl.

Davis admitted he was jealous of those he picked on in high school because they had the courage to be themselves.

His first sexual encounter with another man was at Weber State in Utah. After going on a fishing trip with one of his classmates, they kissed in a car. Davis said he immediately requested to go home and never talked to his classmate again.

“He made it real for me,” Davis said. “I could no longer tell myself that I wasn’t gay because I kissed this guy and I enjoyed it.”

Once he became an NFL prospect, Davis said he desperately tried masking his homosexuality by dating a woman. However, when his offensive line coach at Weber State was asked by a scout from the St. Louis Rams if Davis was a “ladies man,” his response was, “No.”

Seeing Red & Blue: UA exhibition game returns EVAN ROSENFELD The Arizona men’s basketball program will hold its annual McDonald’s Red-Blue intrasquad scrimmage this Saturday at 3 p.m. This event is the official prelude to the 20132014 season, which begins Oct. 28 with an exhibition game against Augustana.

This marks the third consecutive year the event has sold out, and this year fans will also be able to watch online, with a webcast streaming live at Pac-12.com with commentary

by IMG Sports Network’s Brian Jeffries and Matt Muehlebach.

Head coach Sean Miller said that due to the intense demand for tickets to this year’s Red-Blue Game, he felt that a webcast of the event would be a nice gesture to the members of the program’s fan base who are unable to attend.

For this weekend’s festivities, a crowd of 14,545 Wildcat fans will be able to enter McKale Center at 1 p.m., and enjoy the DRC Wheelchair Basketball Exhibition, beginning at 1:45 p.m. with the dunk contest and a scrimmage following at 3 p.m.

The return of the basketball season also means the return of ZonaZoo, and players like junior forward Matt Korcheck are excited for the student section to go wild.

“Keep it coming — [the Zoo has] always done a great job,” Korcheck said. “They bring a lot of enthusiasm to every game, and it makes it that much easier to come out with strong energy.”

Wildcats’ defense disappoints

I

t was a night game, not a day game; it was in Los Angeles, not in Tucson; and USC won, not Arizona, but the Wildcats’ 38-31 loss to USC felt like déjà vu.

For the second JAMES KELLEY straight game against the Trojans, Arizona’s defense was shredded, only this time it wasn’t Matt Barkley to Marqise Lee. The Wildcats beat then-No. 10 USC 39-36 in 2012, but gave up 618 yards of offense and a Pac-12 record 345 receiving yards to Lee. On Thursday night, Arizona gave up 297 yards on 15-of-30 passing to the muchmaligned USC quarterback Cody Kessler.

Many of those yards were given up on 63yard and 62-yard touchdowns, as the Trojans jumped out to a 14-0 lead.

Had Lee played, USC certainly would have gained more yards than the 546 it did.

The defense spoiled what could have been a great game for senior quarterback B.J. Denker.

The Southern California native threw for 363 yards and four touchdowns.

Remember, Denker only threw for 87 yards against NAU, an FCS team. USC was fifth in the Pac-12 in pass defense going into the game.

The defense didn’t have any sacks or interceptions or force any fumbles. It improved after the 14-0 start, but that’s not saying much.

Last season, Arizona was 118th out of 120 FBS teams in total defense. After some easy wins, getting a bunch of pick sixes, returning players that were injured and adding some talent, like true freshman linebacker Scooby Wright, UA fans had hope the defense had turned the corner.

But that was not to be.

Going into Thursday night’s game, Arizona was No. 9 in scoring defense, No. 19 in passing yards allowed and No. 23 in total defense.

Those stats were inflated by playing NAU, UNLV and UTSA to open the season.

The defense was impressive against Washington, at least for most of the game, but the rain severely limited the Huskies’ offense.

Bishop Sankey ran the ball for a schoolrecord 40 times for UW and senior quarterback Keith Price was a pedestrian 14-for-25 for 165 yards. A week later at No. 5 Stanford, Price was 33-for-48 with 350 yards.

Going into the game, Kessler was 91st in the country in passing yards with 832 in four games and passing yards per game, with 166.4.

Kessler had 218 yards passing at the half.

That’s more yards than he had against Hawaii (when he had 95), Washington State (41) and

Soccer seeks out Pac-12 redemption BRIAN PEEL Stuck in a three-game losing streak, Arizona soccer will attempt to bounce back to its early season winning ways this weekend when it heads to the Northwest to take on Oregon State and Oregon.

The Wildcats (5-4-3) have lost their first three games of Pac-12 Conference play and four of their last five overall — though all four losses have come by way of ranked opponents.

Even with the team’s struggles, senior midfielder Jazmin Ponce says she isn’t intimidated by the Wildcats’ competition.

“People always ask me about playing ranked teams, but I really don’t care,” Ponce said. “It’s just another girl out there. I mean, I played with a lot of the same players in club, so what is the difference, just because they have a different jersey on?”

This past weekend, Arizona suffered two close losses in the Bay Area when it lost to thenNo. 2 Stanford and then-No. 11 Cal, both with a score of 2-1.

With their first three Pac-12 opponents being ranked, the Wildcats finally catch a break this

weekend when they play a pair of teams that have only won a combined four games the entire season, and who are tied for dead last in the conference in goals scored, with nine apiece.

On Friday afternoon in Corvallis, Ore., Arizona will face off against an Oregon State squad that — despite its 2-8-2 overall record — is still ahead of the Wildcats in the Pac-12 standings. While the Wildcats haven’t won a game in conference, the Beavers managed a 1-1 tie against Washington in their first Pac-12 game of the season two weeks ago.

Oregon State’s offense and defense have struggled mightily this season, as it is not only tied for last in the Pac-12 in goals scored, but is also last in goals allowed, with 16. The Beavers are led by senior forwards Jenna Richardson and Chelsea Buckland, who have a combined five goals this year, of the team’s nine. Last season, Richardson was named a Pac-12 AllConference Second Team member.

The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.

a struggling opponent, but like their rivals in Corvallis, they’ve collected a tie in a Pac-12 competition to put them ahead of Arizona in the standings.

The Ducks’ offense has been struggling all season, but of late it has been almost completely nonexistent. Oregon has only scored two goals in its past seven games and has yet to score a goal against a Pac-12 opponent. Three players are tied for the team lead in goals scored, with three, and junior goalkeeper Abby Steele is first in the conference in saves with 56 — three ahead of Arizona’s Gabby Kaufman.

After such a difficult start to their Pac-12 schedule this season, the Wildcats are in need

of a successful weekend, and a positive results will surely supply a boost of confidence as well.

“As a coaching staff, we stay confident, and that will trickle down to the team as well,” said assistant coach Kylie Louw. “They are obviously disappointed with the losses, but they know how good their performances have been, and we are going into this weekend knowing that and hoping we can come back with some wins.”

Yes, USC was expected to get a boost from losing Lane Kiffin, but this is the Trojan team that lost to Washington State at home, barely beat Utah State at the Coliseum and lost 62-41 to an average ASU team. USC only scored seven points against WSU and 10 against USU. In addition to missing Lee, who injured his knee against ASU in the Trojans’ last game, the team was also without Tre Madden, who hurt his hamstring.

Senior linebacker Jake Fischer was hurting, but his being limited doesn’t explain the continually wide-open Trojan receivers.

If Arizona’s defense doesn’t improve, it had better hope Denker turns out to be more like Nick Foles or Matt Scott, or this season will be a rough ride.

LOS ANGELES — Prior to Thursday’s game, Arizona’s offense consisted of running back Ka’Deem Carey. After their 38-31 loss to USC, the Wildcats now look to be a decent passing team.

Senior quarterback B.J. Denker threw the ball 44 times, completing 28. He easily set his career high in passing yards with 363 against the Trojans, and he didn’t turn the ball over once.

He struggled to throw it deep in the first half, but he found his groove in the second half with a more up-tempo style.

“If we’d had that tempo on offense in first two quarters, like we had on the last drive of the third and all of the fourth, we would have won,” Denker said.

Offense spreads the wealth On Thursday, seven different Arizona receivers caught passes from Denker. Having a variety of receivers to throw to is a principle of the spread offense.

Different Wildcats receivers shone at different times throughout the game.

In the beginning, freshman Nate Phillips and Samajie Grant had key plays, while toward the end senior Terrence Miller and junior Garic Wharton were the go-to guys.

“We knew all season that we had talented guys,” Denker said of his receivers, “and the tempo was key.”

Tempo Trailing by a couple touchdowns, Arizona began to push the tempo. The late pressure put on the USC defense tired it out and clearly showed that what the Wildcats do best, and what will keep them in games in the future, is also what their offense is predicated on: just playing pitch and catch.

“When we got tempo going and we’re pitching and catching, we’re pretty good,” said head coach Rich Rodriguez.,

Wildcats give up the long ball, again and again USC’s fourth offensive play of the game set the tone for the Trojans’ offense for the rest of the game. A 62-yard touchdown pass to Nelson Agholor from quarterback Cody Kessler wouldn’t be the last time the two hooked up for a long pass. At halftime, Agholor had four receptions on 128 receiving yards.

With All-American USC receiver Marqise Lee sitting on the sideline with a knee injury, the Arizona defense supposedly had it easy. But Agholor reminded Arizona on Thursday that he, too, is one of the country’s best receivers. “[USC receivers] were just wide open,” Rodriguez said. “We didn’t play as well as we’re capable.”

Agholor finished the game with 161 receiving yards on seven catches.

Kessler entered Thursday’s game as the starter, but in the hot seat.

Through five games, the sophomore was only averaging 166.4 passing yards per game and had only thrown six touchdowns.

Kessler had time in the pocket and wasn’t pressured by the Wildcats’ defensive line, as he threw for 297 yards.

Penalties The first half killed Arizona, as it committed five penalties for 52 yards.

As a team, it didn’t commit a single penalty in the second half. Arizona outscored USC 21-10 in the second half. “[The penalties] were very frustrating,” Rodriguez said, adding that they played a big role in Thursday’s outcome.

SWAT doesn’t live up to its name In Arizona’s third-down SWAT defense, the most athletic and best overall defensive players are supposed to take the field on third down to force a turnover or punt. Thursday, the Wildcats’ third-down defense did not live up to its name. USC was 6-for-13 on third down against Arizona.

On numerous occasions, the Wildcats gave up big plays on third down, keeping the offense on the sideline and the Trojans driving — everything Rodriguez hates.

“We have talented guys,” Rodriguez said, “but we’re not good enough to win and play bad.”
