QUESTIONS TO REFLECT ON AND PREPARE FOR a. Study the definition of ‘totalitarianism’ as given by Friedrich and Brzezinski (1965). How does it apply to some or many of the case-studies studied on the course? b. Which elements of ‘totalitarianism’ facilitate violence in your opinion? c. Is ‘licence’ easier to observe in the case of ‘totalitarian’ regimes/states? d. Is it the case, as Rudolph Rummer (Statistics of democide) suggests, that totalitarian states are more likely to commit violence both against ‘other’ groups as well as against their own citizens (in which case, we are dealing with ‘democide’)? What about democracies or simply (non-totalitarian) dictatorships?
