Project leaders: Claus Smed Søndergaard, Marc Jay, Julie Schmidt-Nielsen Team: Arianna Gori, Anne Brønd Fridberg, Sara Dal Ri Status: Competition

Gadehavegaard is a social housing settlement from the ‘70s; it is officially listed among areas particularly subject to social vulnerability, and has therefore been a candidate for an intense urban regeneration.

repurposed green areas

The existing settlement is characterized by vast, though unused, green areas framed by a repetition of concrete blocks lacking identity.

common house renovated existing blocks

The aim of the competition was to elaborate a strategy for the existing buildings, densify the area with new housing typologies for a diverse range of new residents (students, seniors, families) and organically introduce a new university campus linked to the existing educational facilities of the area. Our take included a resourcesaving approach, with the minimization of the demolition of the existing blocks.

SELECTED PROJECTS

1. From an isolated enclave to a connected network Gadehavegaard is currently enclosed by expressways, poorly connected to its surroundings and with limited and unsafe access to the innermost parts of the neighborhood. Towards north, three big parking lots are the main access to the area. A new network of roads, with diffuse parking areas integrated with the landscape, aims to improve the accessibility and safety of the neighborhood. An important cross connection north-south breaks the external loop, and a clear hierarchy is given to the infrastructure.

2. From an enclosed suburb to an active “education district” Gadehavegaard has a strictly residential character, with monotonous open spaces lacking identity and opportunities for social life and interaction. Among the residents figure high percentages of unemployment, low education level and low income. The establishment of the new campus rises the opportunity for new public functions to be introduced, connecting the nearby Høje Tåstrup station and the existing Technology Institute; this can be integrated with new opportunities for learning and self-development for the residents.

3. From green barriers to integrated landscape A big part of the existing green areas in Gadehavegaard is today unprogrammed and feels unsafe. Featureless green strips around the built environment have the purpose of sheltering from the noise and pollution of the roads, but also contribute to the physical and visive separation from the rest of the city. While the green character of the area is an important asset, nature must act as a link between the buildings. Around the common house towards south, an activity garden connects the main pedestrian lane with the big southfacing courtyards, while towards north a wilder nature park surrounds the new campus.

08

4. From “no man’s land” to communal ownership The absence of hierarchy and purpose in the shared outdoor spaces lead to their current state of abandon. Unprogrammed, ‘dead’ common spaces need to be repurposed and redesigned, so that the residents can develop a sense of belonging and ownership. A precise and gradual transition between public, semi-public and private outdoor spaces is established.

5. From closed facades to living and welcoming buildings

The existing blocks in the neighborhood appear today asinstitut impenetrable as the Teknologisk Teknologisk institut area as a whole. 6. From monofunctional zoning to social sustainability Today, Gadehavegaard consists entirely of social housing blocks. The neighborhood must be able to offer different housing types to attract a diverse composition of residents, as well as different functions such as businesses, flexible workplaces, etc. At the same time, it is crucial that the new buildings adapt to Gadehavegård’s existing traits, so that too great a gap is not created between new and existing residents. In addition, the densification must make the greatest possible use of the resources on site - through recycling or upcycling of on-site materials.

A sustainable new urban landscape

Starting from the existing qualities of the settlement (vast green spaces, an open-block building structure that creates shared outdoor areas, a pedestrian-friendly environment), the development and densification of Gadehavegaard in our proposal is all about optimizing resources through the creation of sharing communities and recycling. The strategy is, therefore, conservative: keeping as much of the existing neighbourhood as possible, focusing the demolitions where the new infrastructure and the creation of quality outdoor areas require them, makes it possible to save energy and building materials through reusing much of the resources already available in the area. The result is a varied cityscape offering different possibilities to different types of residents: 1 ) Renovated existing blocks: part of the existing blocks are retrofitted, partially to also host new families and student housing; 2) Transformed existing blocks: the buildings are radically transformed to create a whole new housing typology (townhouses) while retaining the foundations and the concrete structure; 3) New townhouses: this typology mantains the module of the existing buildings, ideally allowing the reuse of the structure removed in the demolition phase; 4) Senior co-housing; 5) Family co-housing; 6) Row houses.

The senior co-housing

The dwelling for the senior residents of Gadehavegaard are strategically placed in short distance from the natural park towards north and revolve around a calmer, central courtyard with a common house. All the apartments span across the building, providing optimal conditions of light and passive ventilation, and have both physical and visual contact with green outdoor areas. The building, with a deck access system and semi-private common areas in direct connection with the accessways, maximizes the opportunities for the residents to meet, share resources, take care of each other and create a sustainable community.

The Generations’ House: combining a nursing home and a football club in Frederiksberg Project leaders: Claus Smed Søndergaard, Marc Jay, Julie Schmidt-Nielsen Team: Corrado Galasso, Elisa Gallazzi, Thea Gasseholm, Arianna Gori, Davide Piva, Olliver Stensballe Status: Competition

The Generations’ House is a space

combining an elderly care center and the Frederiksberg football club; the goal of the competition was to create a common ground for these functions, both with different needs and characters, having each of them benefit from the energies and values generated by the other. In our proposal, the communion of synergies comes from the physical communion of spaces; the two facilities share, in fact, accesses, some services and the public circulation. At the ground floor, shared functions such as the lobby, the cafè and the activity center intersecate and joint, producing constructive relations between the two categories of users. The idea of the “crossing paths” starts from the shape: as an experimental junction of the classical H shape,

typical of health and care facilities, and the perimeter block, the XX shape allows on one side the creation of a private and safe courtyard for the elderly people, on the other opens the building towards the outside in pocket gardens differently oriented, the main ones of which point towards the football fields. At the same time, from a functional point of view, the shape perfectly meets the delicate requirements of the elderly care center, which is placed from the first to the fifth floor. Here, the core of the building around the courtyard hosts the administration and facilities of each department, and, on the corners, two big common terraces for the residents with reduced mobility that can therefore enjoy an easily accessible outdoor area on each floor. The residents’ housing units, as well as the shared living rooms, are placed along the perimeter of the building, always offering an open view towards the outside. I was responsible for the overall “program breakdown” of the project, contributing to the study and development of the plans and the relations among the different functions. 14

‘Aarhus is currently undergoing an

exciting development, where new urban areas arise and old industrial areas find new use. This development goes hand in hand with an ambitious vision that the city’s culture and communities will help carry Aarhus into the future. (...) Our vision is that the Willemoesgade block - with a synergy between userdriven, temporary and permanent new programs - will be integrated in Aarhus’ overall strategy and become an attractive part of the city.” WE Architecture The project, part of an invited parallel competition, comprehends a mix of residential, leisure and business facilities, all of them focusing on a green-oriented culture. I was involved in the whole process of design from the definition of the general programme, to the design of plans and facades, to the final presentation material.

EAST STREET VIEW

The transformation of the stable building features the removal of the existing roof with the addition of three more housing floors; the existing ground floor hosts the administrative offices of the whole complex. The new addition is completely recognizable, with the use of high and narrow steel panels on the facade. On the left, the main building of the complex hosts differently shaped greenhouses on top of the stairwell, offering the inhabitants of the building a common green space to share and activities to enhance the creation of a green-oriented community.

“Midgård”: a community for elderly people in Farum Project leader: Claus Smed Søndergaard Project architect: Arianna Gori Status: Won competition - Under construction

‘Midgård’ is one of the nine realms of

Nordic Mythology; in contrapposition with Asgård, the home of gods, it is the realm of mankind. It is also the title chosen by the community of seniors who commissioned this “seniorbofællesskab”, a cohousing for elderly people who wish to share their everyday life, focusing on nurturing community and sustainability. The Midgård group asked for a building with a distinct Nordic atmosphere, able to provide a welcoming and safe environment to the residents and appropriate spaces for a vibrant, green-oriented community. The program was resolved in a perimeter block around a green courtyard, a shared deck access to the apartments, a west-facing garden and terraces, and a common space for the diverse activities of the community. I worked independently as project architect for this competition. 32

Multiskift: concept

development for Movia’s

new bus stops in Sjælland Project leaders: Julie Schmidt-Nielsen, Kasper Munk Team: Arianna Gori, Davide Piva, Lewis Williams

Movia is the agency responsible for the

public transport in Copenhagen and the Sjælland region; the company asked for a concept development for the device of the bus stop of the future, able to interact with users, give information and make the waiting time valuable. The proposal includes tools for the analysis of the surrounding of the different existing bus stops and the creation of site-specific solutions, based on a “catalog of ideas” providing selected functions and activities to be incorporated in installations specifically designed for each place.

36

IMPLEMENTATION: the analy sis wheel

The team devised an analysis wheel as a tool to approach the design of the different bus stops according to the characters of the site and its surroundings. The analysis focuses on 3 main categories: 1- Service facilities, concerning the practical facilities existing/needed in the selected bus stop (ie. practical facilities, sustainable measures, repair and maintenance options, sales and service functions and communication tools) 2- Safe environment, dealing with the physical layout of the bus stop and how it can provide the best possible waiting time. 3- Activities, describing the added facilities present in the surroundings or that should be included to improve the quality of the waiting time.

FURNACES EXHIBITION SPACE

in a former cement factory VILLINO CERRANO ADMINISTRATION OFFICES

Supervisor: prof. archt. Andrea Grimaldi

’Cementificio Cerrano’ is a former

cement factory built in the first years of 20th century in Santa Marinella (Rome). The plant, in state of abandon since 1 942, features several Art Noveau buildings and is therefore subject to historical and artistic heritage protection. The aim of the project is the reappropriation of the space as a public good, capable of providing benefit to the surrounding area through a both social and cultural function. The site is redesigned to host a hub for contemporary art and a leisure centre for the residents of the comprehensory, while the vast and unused surrounding area is turned into a new park for the city; the former labourer lodging turns into a guest house for artistic residencies, the big bricked warehouse becomes a space for performing arts, the furnaces area hosts the visual art exhibitions.

Section A-a: the furnaces

The visual art exhibitions take place in the furnaces area. At the ground floor the main exhibit is hosted in an existing, large hall with high ceilings supported by a concrete structure of pillars and beams; upstairs, it is divided among the smaller spaces of the proper furnaces and their adjacent buildings. The art exhibition area is accessible through the entrance hall in the former warehouse, crossed by the paths of aerial walkways and sculptural, orange staircases.

THE WAREHOUSE:

The space is left as open as possible; the concrete structure of the roof, experimental at the time of construction, is devised in a series of capriate which allows to keep the original experience of a full, immersive space, dominated by the light filtrating through the clay cladding (laterizi a nido d’ape).

The entrance hall, also “informal” space for Section B-b exhibitions, is separated from the studio theatre by the low foyer at the groundfloor and the transparent block of the reharsal room at the upper floor, open to the gaze of the visitors and potentially additional space to host performance art.

SELECTED PROJECTS

2014 REFURBISHMENT

‘Exile on Main St.’ a social hub for music creation, production and sharing

‘Exile on Main Street’ is a center for creation, production and sharing of music. It was developed as part of the project “Tevere Cavo: a new infrastructure for Rome linking past and future” by professor Antonino Saggio; the aim of the programme and the related publication was to give value to a series of ’urban voids’ and abandoned areas in the north of Rome, around the Tiber river.

The project is located along Corso di Francia, one of the most congested streets in Rome, in a currently abandoned plot where a tall, dramatic stairway connects the street to the top of a cliff. The new building is shaped as a stair itself, with different levels and decks connected to the existing landings; it hosts a studio recording, an auditorium, a restaurant, spaces for workshops and music classes and guest houses for musicians.
