Summer 2021 Internship | Baskervill D.C. E-Xperience

This virtual internship focused on the schematic design and design development phases of three different project types: Corporate, Healthcare, and Hospitality. Each project was three weeks in length, and about 30-35 hours of work were dedicated to each week. Process involved receiving feedback and working closely with practitioners within the firm and delivering presentations of the final product. Conducted preliminary research, selected finishes, derived space plan options, designed custom millwork, and conceptualized and executed project vision.

Summer 2022 - Present | Designer at Gensler Atlanta

Retail

Spearheaded development of construction documentation for retail projects and coordinated consultant calls. Delegated responsibilities within team and trained new members on brand standards of retail projects. Guided creative direction of interior design projects and design options for space planning, storefront design, and branding for schematic design presentations. Conducted zoning studies and code analysis on initial client floor plans and learned and applied building code standards in various cities. Produced Tenant Improvement reports to document existing conditions. Provided solutions for accessibility.

Workplace

Piloted interior fit-outs and derived space planning options to present to clients. Utilized design strategies to maximize space and meet client requirements for seat count and program. Facilitated team organization to create efficient project work flow.

Hospitality

Performed FFE checks on site visit and provided notes and photo report.

STEAM-E PETE’S

Recent events have demonstrated the need to eliminate barriers to learning, and social inequalities, via innovative, immersive STEM-inspired toys. STEAM-E Pete’s, a hypothetical company, aims to fill this need. With a mission to empower through play, inclusivity is written into the company’ DNA, and many of their products seamlessly accommodate a range of neurodiversities.

The process of neuroplasticity will serve as the driving concept. Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections and its ability to adapt, learn skills, and store memories. Modular seating, a varied use of color and form, and flooring changes will represent these connections and destinations within the brain. These elements will offer an immersive experience that prompts users to explore, discover, and create.

JENI’S SPLENDID ICE CREAMS

Located in Dallas, Texas, this boutique ice cream shop is an interior-fit out of an existing single story building. Scope of work includes new electrical, lighting, plumbing, and rework of existing mechanical systems. Additional work in includes the construction of a new restroom, new interior partitions, millwork, doors, finishes, equipment, and storefront.

The initial schematic phase derived different space plans and design options for the interior finishes and storefront. Through color and finishes, the design draws inspiration from the warm, comforting culture of Dallas.

Sage green paint and wood moulding bring a softness and warmth to the space. The idea of a tiled backwall uses a pattern reminiscent of the Dallas star. A gallery wall and neon signage activate the walls at the entrance.

CITY OF ATLANTIS KIOSK

According to legend, Atlantis was an ancient civilization unlike any other, boasting amazing technologies and rich culture. As the legend goes, Atlantis was flooded by the ocean waves and consumed, becoming the sunken city that it is known as today. The kiosk is an “excavation” of this legendary city - a slice of its aesthetics and principles. Weathered stone pillars bear the writings of a dead language, majestic domes top the structure, and the waters that surround the city are reflected through the use of fiberglass. The kiosk will not only serve an informational purpose, but it will also provide users with a snapshot of a longlost culture brought back to the present.

Designed to provide an educational experience for university students, this kiosk provides different interactive features. At one entry point, users encounter a film projection documenting the ancient city’s history. Touchscreens installed at various heights consider accessibility and universal design. At these stations, users are given translation options to learn the Atlantean language.

PARK POP UP: WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS

During the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health and substance abuse-related issues escalated at alarming rates. In January 2021, 41% of adults and 56% of young adults experienced symptoms of anxiety and depression. Times of crisis and isolation negatively impact the mental, physical, and emotional health of all age ranges. Consequently, suicide rates are steadily increasing.

Where the Sidewalk ends is a pop-up park that responds to such issues, aiming users to heal and rebuild themselves. Taking inspiration from the Shel-Silverstein poem of the same name, this pop-up represents and imaginative, interactive space where people of all backgrounds can find respite.

ASK CANCER FOUNDATION

For the ASK Cancer Foundation, an organization dedicated to childhood cancer research, human wellness and comfort is a top priority. Located in Richmond, Virginia, this project proposal addresses space-saving solutions and fostering trust between healthcare workers and patients.

The North Star is a significant symbol to the ASK Foundation. The organization utilizes it as their goal marker as it represents stability, security, and hope. These ideas are present in abstract ways, such as using architecture and materials to establish a grounding element like the fixed north star. Free flowing lines emulate the sense of movement from other objects in the sky, and brightly illuminated spaces and color create openness and positivity.

The ceiling elements and carpet ground this particular zone; curved lines in the flooring and architecture guide users to move through the space. Colored glass panels add a playful element while also connecting the reception to the spaces beyond it.

ASK CANCER FOUNDATION | KITCHEN

The kitchen references colors and forms from the reception space. Materiality adds warmth, and the custom vinyl wall graphic on the upper wall takes a pattern directly from the ASK brand website. Various age ranges are also considered through seating.

The wood materials and the upholstered interiors offer comfort and warmth. Fixed nooks are ADA-compliant and have privacy curtains and built-in lighting for more long-term usage. The felt baffling closes some of the vertical space, making this area feel closer and more home-like. The lighting above imitates a starry sky, prompting users to look up, similar to looking up at the North Star, evoking feelings of hope, security, and comfort.

CONCEPT

London is central to many historical landmarks, significant architecture, and cultural events. One such event is called Sculpture in the City, an annual art festival where people can walk around the city and encounter these temporary installations. Characterized by the action of exploring and sightseeing, the idea of “art as a way of living” informs the design of the hotel. Architectural elements that are sculptural in nature, organic furnishings, and warm lighting provide an innovative, dynamic space that feels as if one is encountering works of art.
