PROLOGUE

Architecture projects an interpersonal approach in our built and natural environment.

Saipan, where I grew up, has a deep and forgotten history even within a remote radius. While growing up, I learned the value of cherishing and respecting existing communities and environments.

Throughout my academia in San Francisco, Arizona, and experience in the field, I believe that constant learning in this evolving world not only guarantees a successful design but a successful designer as well.

As designers, it is important to honor the many perspectives we get to work with. With this philosophy, I believe architecture will advance by staying true to the human experience and the world we live in.

EXPANSION: OLD BOTANICAL GARDEN AT PLANTEN UN BLOMEN

STUDIO: ARCHITECTURE OF LIVE COLLECTIONS

Located in Planten un Blomen, the Old Botanical Garden covers 116 acres of land as a point of research and horticultural exhibition for the city of Hamburg.

The greenhouses is composed of an exoskeleton of steel girders arranged in a parallelogram geometry. The existing collections include the Tropic House, Cycad House, Subtropic House, Fern House, and Desert House.

The greenhouse sits into a hillside and mimics the curvature of the Mediterranean terraces, leading to the historical moat from old city fortications.

In a group of four, the intention of our expansion and adaptation was to provide a new botanical collection and program to give the existing project new life with current sustainable and bioclimactic approaches. We analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of the project and provided a new expansion design. I was in charge of all drawings (unless stated otherwise). Wall glazing allows lights to enter while creating airflow to help regulate temperatures in the different collections

The interior is connected to the site through a system of terraces

HOTEL RENOVATION BASED IN GUAM

Drafted demolition series for renovation of an existing hotel in Tumon, Guam. This project consists of two mirrored buildings connected by a covered hallway. The center point includes utility rooms and elevators facing a courtyard that will contain a swimming pool for tenants to access. This demolition was decided to provide better ADA compliant fixtures and changes.

Drafted set of drawings to reflect the changes in the restrooms for both East and West wings. This building was first intended to provide a dormitory for Guam Community College’s students to reside in. Much of the restrooms contain shower fixtures that are then demolished to provide a more ADA compliant commercial restrooms, both in the ground and second floor.

GUAM LIBERATION DAY FLOAT DESIGN 2021

Taniguchi Ruth Makio Architects was assigned to fabricate a float design for the University of Guam and Guam Community College that empowers higher education on the island of Guam.

In a three-person team, I created and rendered four design options on Revit and Adobe Photoshop within a month’s span. Weekly meetings with school presidents and committees were conducted to fine-tune and arrange specific details prior to construction.
