A little inspiration while you wait

The Better Fox News Graduation day has finally arrived, and just in time- I’ve officially checked out of high school. All I can think about is enjoying one last amazing, carefree summer with my best friends before we all head off to different places around the world.

There’s also something else at the back of my mind, though- something of the anxiety I’ve felt during the most stressful parts of high school, when my teachers surely conspired together and

all assigned ten projects and tests for the same week. I’m finished though, aren’t I? What am I worried about? It’s over!

I’ve graduated! I win!

Except the longer I think about it, the more I understand what graduation truly means.

Because everything we’ve done in high school, everything we’ve learned, really hasn’t been for that diploma.

This August I’ll be attending my first year of college.

Four more years of school.

I applied to college because that’s what I felt I was supposed to do- what my parents expected, what most of my

A myriad of papers, literally. Dozens of textbooks.

Miles ran. Meters swum. Saturday mornings sacrificed for standardized testing. Essays upon essays drafted and revised.

You can measure the past four years by countless units. By coffee cups, by the classes you loved and the classes you skipped, by the incessant ringing of the bell. The spirit days you partook in, or didn’t. The tests aced and flunked. The hours dedicated to essays

peers were doing. And now I sit back and continue to wonder- why? What is this all for?

And the further I consider this, the closer I get to realizing that graduation doesn’t signify an end at all, but rather the beginning of all the things I want to try, to achieve, to impact; it signifies that everything I’ve learned has been leading up to the answer of the exciting final question of what the heck I’m going to do with this education.

Throughout my high school career, I always referred to a “they” when I discussed the happenings of the world around me. “They” make kids pay expensive parking fees; “they” need to stop manifesting political segregation; “they” will definitely do something about climate change, before it’s too late. And as we graduate high school and take the next step in our young lives, whatever this step may entail, we join the nameless group of “they,” the anonymous mass of society in charge of making things

right and blamed when things go wrong. It’s not “them,” and it never was “them.” It’s just us.

What makes me think that other people are going to take care of everything, or that somehow there’s always a group to blame when things go wrong? The misnomer lies in not accepting myself as an adult in this world. When I spoke of “they,” I didn’t hold myself accountable for the way a system worked or for the outcomes I experienced. With this develops the fundamental driver of stagnancy of progress: we assume that somewhere in the world are natural altruists, automatically designated by the universe to give their lives to patching up the world and all its problems.

We decide the character of the world we’re about to enter.

Our opinions and our actions represent votes for how we as a society understand and prioritize causes in our world. It’s on us now. These movements are our fights, and it’s us who must (and will!) change the world.

1.) Spending time with family is just as important as anything else.

Let’s face it, leaving home and going off to college or beginning your future is equally as terrifying as it is exciting. This past year, I have discovered that though work piles up and spontaneous get-togethers at a friend’s house are planned, you should always make time for family. Of course it’s sad leaving some friends behind, but it’ll be nothing like watching your mother wave goodbye from the car on move-in day. So this summer, spend time with your family as much as you can.

2.) Take pictures of every memorable moment (and actually print them out, too!). and projects and the Common App, or the sounds of last-minute scribbling. Burning the midnight oil and slipping into the small hours for the sake of finishing that lab report, or merely sitting in the company of friends and watching the night tick on. You can measure the past four years by your own metric.

But this was only high school. It isn’t the pinnacle of your life, the so-called glory days. Those are yet to come. We’ve poured much into life since we wandered in as fourteen year-olds, and these experiences have culminated into the aggregate of our current selves. We’ve all endured so much under this roof of maroon and gold, ordeals which have united us into our own colorful mosaic of spirit and character.

But this was only high school. We have an entire epic stretched out ahead of us, brimming with various ambitions and aspirations and directions. Among us are mechanical engineers, fifth grade teachers, novelists, biochemists, politicians, playwrights. Among us simmers the future.

Together we comprise these past four years; we have been influenced by countless voices and influences and occurrences. High school can only proffer so much; it is a stepping stone to leap off of into the enigmatic abyss of tomorrow.

So no matter how you measure these past 15,552,000 seconds, do not bear them as your testament, for there is a lifetime ahead of us.

I have a wall of photos in my bedroom that I haven’t updated in almost a year. As I look back, I realize I don’t even have pictures of some of the most memorable moments from my high school career. Although we believe we’ll remember a moment for ever, it is so important to have those tangible memories to look back on. So, as you go off to college, immortalize all your memories, maybe even the ones you may hope to forget.

3.) Invest in a journal.

Sure, finstas are a great way to share short rants and embarrassing moments with your friends, but they’re hardly the place to express your feelings. So, my suggestion, especially as you enter college and begin to experience some life-changing events, is to invest in a journal where you can just write your stream of thoughts.

Journals are also a great way to reflect. You’ll look back at old ones, smile, laugh, and probably cringe and realize how much you have grown.

4.) Invest in yourself.

I realized this year that I have given

up parts of myself and my dreams to do right by other people. I have given up some of my favorite hobbies just to make others happy, and I know that I am not alone in this. So, as we start deciding what our futures are going to look like, begin by doing right by yourself. Ultimately, the decisions we make affect our lives and our futures more than anyone else’s. Sadly, others will often come and go, but ultimately you will need to live with the decisions you make for yourself.

5.) It’s not the quantity, but the quality of friends.

Honestly, my friend group has shrunk over the course of these last four years and I would not have it any other way. I could count all my true friends on one hand, but they are my lifeline and the only people on the planet that I trust with everything. So, as we submerge ourselves into the “real world,” it’s important to remember that a large group of friends is nothing if you cannot love, appreciate, and trust one another.

Homage to our future failures

Nido It’s impossible to pinpoint my exact feelings about finishing high school. Some days, I’m overtaken by bouts of nostalgia: for the small town nestled in suburbia that I will always call home, for the starry nights spent engrossed in deep conversation with friends, for all the people I’ve met and learned from and loved.

Other days, I’m impatient, ready to break out of this stifling bubble and breathe in some long-awaited freedom. As I say my goodbyes to the unassuming girl I used to be, I welcome the confident woman I’m growing into, someone who is more cognizant of the glaring injustices of the world, but also more appreciative of its beauty. I’m grateful. I’m eager. I’m proud. I’m uncertain. Most of all, I’m terrified, not of the future, but of how I will face it.

I see unbelievable talent in my classmates.

Time and time again, I find myself in awe of their vast potential to become groundbreaking artists, innovative scientists, witty comedians, and brilliant political leaders. But I’m afraid that, when the time comes, we’ll all forget what we’re capable of and settle for the ordinary.

I read a book called “The Opposite of Loneliness,” in which the author captures what it means to be young and ambitious, yet so incredibly fearful of being rejected by the world.

She writes, “There’s this sentiment I sometimes sense...that it is somehow too late. That others are somehow ahead. More accomplished, more specialized. More on the path to somehow saving the world, somehow creating or inventing or improving. That it’s too late now to BEGIN a beginning and we must settle for continuance, for There is so commencement.”

We give in to our and to mess up, doubts. to challenge If I could ourselves and make a list of all the things I to discover new yearned to try passions. in high school, but never did, it would stretch a mile long. I wanted to write poetry, learn to code, create art more profound than stick figures, sing acapella, improve my public speaking skills. I could easily have pursued these missions, if I had just had the courage. The dangers of failure, however, loomed over the horizon, goading me to stay away. And I listened.

As I move into the next stage of my life, my biggest fear has become stagnation. We are still so young. We still have so much life to live.

There is so much time to make mistakes and to mess up, to challenge ourselves and to discover new passions.

As for now, I say cheers to the first research proposal I submit- the one that fails to get approved for its poor design. I raise my glass to the first marathon I attempt to run- the one where I sprain my ankle and drop out, one mile from the finish. I applaud the first time I travel overseas on my own- despite the fact that I miss my layover flight and get stuck in the Czech Republic for twenty-seven hours.

I’m grateful for these future failures.

They’ll enrich my life, grant me new wisdom, give me the strength to take the next leap. And, if nothing else, I’ll have a lifetime’s worth of stories to tell my grandchildren someday.

An Open Letter To Mom And Dad Dear Mom and Dad, The time has come. I am graduating high school and starting a new chapter of my life. I am moving on to make new strides into adulthood, leaving behind the precious times of childhood. But before I go off, I would like to thank you.

Thank you for raising me into the young woman that I have become today.

For the past 18 years, you both stuck by my side day in and day out. Through my every challenge and every triumph, every failure and every success, you have been there. And every time the world walked out on me, you two have always walked in.

Thank you for the countless morals you taught me. You both have led by example, serving as my biggest heroes to which I aspire. Thank you for teaching me to always extend empathy towards others, because you never really know what people are going through.

To forgive quickly because life is too short to hold grudges. And to love others unconditionally because as human beings that is what we were designed to do. The morals that the two of you have engraved in me are morals that I strive to practice every day in hopes of being like you, two of the best people I know.

Thank you for teaching me to be myself and nobody but myself. You taught me to love each and every part of myself, and to not only accept my flaws but celebrate them. You two have brought me up to go from a shy, insecure girl to a confident young woman ready to take on the world.

I’m well aware of all of the chal-

lenges the real world has to offer me in the near future. However, I also know that there is no obstacle that I cannot overcome. I have you to thank for that.

You both have conditioned me to be strong enough to conquer any battle that comes my way. Every time I have fallen, you were the first to pick me up and tell me to try, try, and try again. When nobody believed in me, even when I didn’t believe in myself, you did. That is something I cannot thank you enough for.

As I spread my wings and fly, there are just a few things I would like you to keep in mind. First off, don’t worry about me. Yes, I will inevitably make mistakes. I will struggle at times. But that doesn’t matter. Being the daughter of two of the strongest people to ever walk the face of this Earth, I will be quite alright. Second, yes things will change, but I know one thing for sure will not change: me. I will always be your little girl. I will always be quirky and a little silly at times. And I will always love you guys more than words can ever describe. And third, thank you. I couldn’t have done it without you two.

Leaving high school just when you find your place

Most Likely to Rule the World My freshman year self did not expect that I would be sad to leave high school.

After my first day at ARHS, I came home and cried. The school was too big.

There were too many people I didn’t know. I got lost and couldn’t figure out how to get to the buses, how to pay for my lunch, or how to get from class to class. I was overwhelmed.

Slowly, I began to find my place. I wandered the booths of the Extracurricular Extravaganza, and found the groups

that would define my experience at Algonquin. Ballroom, Model UN, Juggling Club, The Harbinger, and the robotics team all pulled me in. I talked to kids in my classes, and people who had seemed so different and distant became familiar, even those mystifying Southborough kids.

When I was a marching band freshman at football games, I couldn’t picture myself as one of the thundering seniors screaming “Ole, ole” chants in the stands next to me. But when I was there, standing on the bleachers in the rain, with “SENIOR” painted on me, I felt every bit a part of Algonquin.

Becoming happy has come with a price. Graduation is here, and soon I’ll be moving on. My friends are scattering across the country to their colleges. I’m saying goodbye to the classmates that I enjoy seeing for quick moments between classes, chats at lunch, or catching up in the dubs nugs line. I will even have to

leave my robotics team, which has become my home within ARHS. As strange as it seems, I will miss waking up at 5:45 am, cramming into cafeteria tables, and fighting through D100 in the middle of the day.

Now the halls that once seemed so cavernous are feeling a little too small.

The group of kids in our class that once seemed impossibly large is now a bit too few. We’ve outgrown Algonquin. It’s time to move on.

Soon my Gonk maroon and gold will turn into American University red, white, and blue. But my teachers were right; my experience here has prepared me for college. I’ve learned something that will be vital from the day of orientation. Algonquin has taught me how to become a part of a community, and someday, how to say goodbye.

The worst four years of my life annelise eppen

DesignatedVegan After I made my final college decision, a junior friend asked me whether high school was worth it. I thought about my answer to this question for a while.

After months of a perilous, tear-filled application process, I had been rejected from nine out of 13 colleges, leaving me to feel pretty worthless. Then I thought back to everything that led up to this moment.

There were the nights when I fell asleep at 3:00 a.m. with a textbook on my chest.

There were anxiety attacks. There was the nagging fear that I was hopelessly incapable of functioning in the real world. In the end, had it all been worth it? Yes, and I believe it.

I don’t mean that high school was worth it in the sense that the information I learned in class prepared me for the real world. And I certainly don’t mean that the physical and emotional hell I put myself through was worth the good GPA or class rank. Still, I feel as though the high school experience was necessary in my transformation from a naive child to a somewhat less naive adult. As I struggled, I came to realizations about myself that I now consider vital to my personal philosophy.

Only through negative experiences did I learn what I want for the future of my education and life. My anxiety about

tests forced me to confront the fact that grades are not indicative of my intelligence. My disdain for rubrics taught me that I like to create quality work, not merely check off boxes. My lack of sleep taught me that I must prioritize my own well-being. The hard work I put into every assignment taught me that not everything is worth my best effort. My disillusionment with the significance of numerical and monetary success taught me that the success I aim to achieve is emotional rather than tangible. And my realization that the process of memorizing, regurgitating, and promptly forgetting the information I was learning taught me that I crave learning for learning’s sake.

At the end, I can only be grateful for my high school experience. Had I not pushed myself, I never would have forced myself to step back and reconsider my values and priorities. Had I not scrutinized the flaws of today’s education system, I would not possess this strong sense of

I’ve always been one of those students who dreads leaving high school. The sadness stems not from a fear of college, but because I’m averse

Washington, DC seems like the most logical step in the right direction.

In the end, graduation should not be a time of regret, of sadness, or of anger.

Rather, it should be thought of as another stepping stone

to change.

To many, high school is a four year prison sentence with no possibility of parole. To me, it’s four eventful years, 720 busy school days, 344 amazing peers, and a million memories.

Algonquin holds myriad life lessons, friendships and memories, and those things have shaped me to be the person I am on graduation day. But that doubt still lingers, the idea that maybe I’m just not ready to move on.

Four years is, undeniably, not a substantial amount of time for someone to decide what they really want to do in life. When you’re bogged down by exams, work and life, the future outside of high school is the last thing on your mind. But those moments are the perfect time for mistakes to be made in order to figure out who you are and what you enjoy learning about.

Change is scary, and I would have been the first person to say that I didn’t want to go far away from home. But feelings change, and when you know what you want, moving 440 miles from your family to

As the Olympian Kristin Armstrong declared: “Times of transition are strenuous, but… they are an opportunity to purge, rethink priorities, and be intentional about new habits.” After today, the world really is your oyster, so make the best of what you have now, and then prepare yourself to take on the future feeling motivated and eager.

After suffering through four years of rigorous testing, carrying around 30-pound backpacks (Noah Brazer), talking loudly in the library (sorry, Mrs. Rehill), hosting midnight study sessions, ranting about teachers we loved (Ms. Burns), and rolling down the D100 ramp during Press Week (#GoHarby), we are ready for the next chapter in our lives. We are done with school bells, mandatory gym classes, late slips, detentions, crazy car lines and curfews.

So while my heart says I’m not ready, the diploma that I’ve received shows that there are bigger and better things to be accomplished outside of Algonquin.

I know that many of you loved high school and will remember these four years as some of the best years of your life, but many of you won’t. If you’re like me, you had a rough time during high school trying not only to survive a barrage of work, but also to figure out who you are. You probably questioned your abilities, beliefs, and self-confidence. You might look back at awkward moments, a minimal social life, questionable fashion choices, and insurmountable stress wondering what it was all for. You’re probably excited to move on to bigger and better things, but scared that the next four years will be no different.

To that, we must consider how much we’ve grown personally since the start. While some qualities may not have changed, our understanding of ourselves and our place in this universe has. You’ve developed your own beliefs. You understand your strengths and weaknesses. You know what makes you happy. Together, we’ve done quite a bit of figuring out.

I hope that these four years of high school were the worst four years of our lives. I don’t say this with contempt, but with full confidence that every one of us now has the ability to make the next years of our lives even better.

Swollenmen The six people mentioned above walked around the halls of Algonquin and gathered data on what happens in different boys bathrooms. Through harsh terrain and awkward confrontations with people, we have managed to acquire a large pool of data, amassing 13 whole different answers. We realize that this is not that large of a crowd, but it is still a good representation of a normal day of people going to the bathroom. Each person we interviewed was asked specific questions, and results are represented in the below pie chart, while only the most special answers made it to our quoted segments. The percentages and chart include information from all 13 subjects though.

How to complete high school despite your constant impending mental breakdowns

the better ones to finish first, by the time they’re done, there’s no mental energy for the “harder” or more important ones.

It’s okay--actually, good--to miss an assignment once in awhile.

If you’re like me and get anxious when you can’t do your homework because it’s 12:30 am and you have a calculus test in the morning, prioritize what’s more important: a good rest and doing better on the hundred point test, or a sheet of paper with a few answers from a textbook that’s worth five?

No. 2 Tin Foil Queen Looking back at my younger self, I can definitely see that I was one of those freshmen: innocent and carefree. The world was just simply a place where I would play soccer, run track, or hang out with friends and study.

Over the course of four years, a lot of aspects of life can change drastically. Interests in sports or other activities, efforts or strengths in school, family or friend situations all can and will encounter changes.

They all did for me.

Although we would love for every change in our lives to be pleasant, unfortunately nothing can be all rainbows and unicorns.

As I encountered more and more big adjustments during my years at Algonquin, like getting a new teacher when the last one was the best ever, or almost losing a family member or friend, I had to make do with school while also maintaining some mental soundness.

Although I am still not really sure how I survived Philbin essays, AP Bio labs, Algebra II tests, history outlines, boring gym classes, frustrating attendance policies, and some sticky social situations, I somehow made it out in one piece (just barely).

I’ve realized that from our high school struggles and successes, we can take with us tools for the future.

From my experiences, these are the most important things to remember when beginning new adventures in college:

1.) BREATHE!

This is definitely the most cliché thing to say, but just do it anyways and see what happens. Hint: it won’t be bad.

2.) You can’t stop change.

No matter how hard you want something to return to normal, it mostly likely won’t, so do your best to adjust to the new.

3.) Do the hardest thing first.

After trying to hold everything in for years, we all crack at one point. Whether it’s crying, yelling, or ranting to your best friend, family member, favorite teacher, or another cool adult (they do exist), I guarantee it feels good to let it out. Next year you’ll have roommates and others in your hall who may also be feeling alone. Reach out to them for a good talk.

5.) Take advantage of new beginnings.

Just because you hated a subject this year, next year it could be better. A new teacher, class, or environment can bring positive changes so try hard to remain optimistic.
