A message to my freshman self: Embrace the lessons you’ll learn LIZA ARMSTRONG

Hi freshman Liza, Well, we made it. No more classes and your (video) graduation is in sight.

Since I’ve burned myself out writing essays these past four years, I’ve created an itemized list of what you should know.

1. Don’t take anything for granted.

See that video graduation. Well, you graduate in what’ll be considered one of the worst pandemics in human history, so your senior year ended on a random March Thursday (and with it all the traditional fun of second semester). But you’ll be able to contemplate what makes high school so important in modern American life.

2. You’ll somewhat understand why high school is important. Yes, you had fun, but let’s focus on the hell you (willingly) put yourself through. You’ll spend countless nights getting three hours of sleep due to intensive studying, to still not get the grades you want (just accept you’ll never be a STEM student). You’ll pour yourself into so many (meaningful) extracurriculars. You’ll spend many nights at home seeing others (many of whom aren’t in your friend circle who like you have submitted themselves to the same four year sentence) having the “movie-esq” experience.

3. Trust me, this hell is worth it. Even though you prioritize academics and your many, many other responsibilities over

your health, you have fun. You’ll realize that your teachers really do care about you, and you’ll form some pretty great connections with them (even the ones that teach the subject you very clearly don’t care about). And I promise you: you will have fun. It won’t be the fun you saw on middle school TV shows, but then again, that was never you. You’ll meet some really cool people in your classes and clubs that become some of your closest friends who’ll commiserate and celebrate with you. You’ll make lasting memories with these people, even if it isn’t at those house parties you think you’ll be attending.

4. These four years really help you understand yourself. Remember that rahrah spirit school you think you’re going to?. Well, you don’t go. Instead you pick a school whose motto is “The city is your campus” (read: enjoy being a pseudoNew Yorker over a traditional college student), but these four years will show you that that’s the place for you (and a boozy brunch or a rooftop bar sounds like more fun than a crowded frat basement to 18 year old you anyway).

That’s all you need to know. Enjoy finding out what this fun I talk about is (get comfortable with Cold Stone). Now, time for us to figure out what we’re gonna do with the media degree we decided to get (Mom thinks it really fits our strengths and I think we’ll be happier doing what we love so we’ll see this one out).

The ability to capture photographs for all of my classmates and friends has been extremely powerful for me.

Throughout all the different events that took place, I felt as though by being there, documenting events large and small, I was doing something meaningful. I was creating memories that we can hold on to forever. Walking into sporting events and seeing all the students cheering on their teams always brought a smile to my face. The way that I fit into the Algonquin community was so unique, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

And that is what I believe is the most important thing every student should strive to accomplish during their four years in high school. Find your purpose. It doesn’t have to be

what you want to do as a career, but it is important to find how to fit into your school, just like it is important to figure out how you fit into any other sort of community. I found where I fit in, and it made my high school experience that much more enjoyable.

I think the best advice I could give to any new student is no matter who you are or how scared you are to try new things, just go for it. Keep trying new clubs and activities until you find one or two that feel right and really work hard to see how you fit into the Algonquin community because everyone has a place in it. Finding your purpose will make your journey through high school more memorable, and remember that no matter what you end up doing, it is okay to just be “the guy with a camera.”

High school: where do I start?

Looking back on these last four years, what lessons do I take away from high

school? It’s a question I’ve been struggling with for the better part of a week as I sit here typing this senior reflection the night it’s due.

The truth is I don’t know exactly. I’m not sure how to give my high school experience justice in 300 words. High school was, well, it was a lot. 31 classes, 341 classmates, 28 teachers, 5 coaches, and 7 clubs later, I’m left with so many moments to dissect.

High school seems immune to generalizations. It passed both in an eternity and the blink of an eye. Each year was rich and unique, but, at the same time, exhibited a shared monotony, parts of which I yearned to escape.

There were good moments and, of course, there were bad. From the weeks you felt on top of the world to weeks that crushed you with continual drudgery to weeks that might have felt suffocating if it weren’t for the thrill of running on pure adrenaline to just about everything in between. Countless memories, observa-

tions, and conversations that I’m now just expected to culminate in this 300 word column.

Well, after four years of meticulously completing all my assignments, following rubrics to the letter, and being accused of perfectionism by the adviser of this very newspaper, I’m drawing the line here.

Welcome to my modest act of rebellion; I don’t want to write a reflection on my high school experience, a supposed rite of passage and last hurrah for every harby editor. I don’t want to pretend I can fashion a cute but meaningful takeaway in this bite-size form.

Rather than risk being overly sappy, cliché, or inauthentic, this is all I want to say about high school: Appreciate the people. Get involved. Work hard. Take risks.

Listen to good music. Read The Harbinger. For now, I’ll leave it at that.

Perfectionist procrastinator: My struggle CATHERINE HAYDEN Has never slept

If I could change one thing about my high school career, it would be to not be a Perfectionist Procrastinator.

It might not seem all that bad, but let’s take my most latest installment in my Perfectionist Procrastination saga. I am five days late to write this senior reflection. FIVE. And this is all because I couldn’t think of the “perfect” concept to write it on.

If I’ve learned anything in my long years (and long nights) at Algonquin, it would be that the Perfectionist Procrastinator is unsustainable. It leads to lost sleep (shout out to my post-4 a.m. nights) and dissatisfaction because you somehow never start your work with enough time to actually make it what you want. Maybe you can do it for a few months, a year, longer, but after that, you will explode or implode -- neither of which is actually any good for your work or your health.

If you find yourself relating a bit too much to the title Perfectionist Procras-

tinator, it’s not too late (hopefully). Although it’s daunting, I’ve found that the procrastination aspect of this struggle is the easier part of it. Perfectionism is a hard habit to break. It’s all about changing the way you think which at times can feel impossible. It will be hard, but I promise it’ll be worth it.

Procrastination only pushes your problems onto your future self and I can tell you that as the “future self ” in this situation, I do not appreciate it very much at all.

Perfectionism is a thief. It steals your time, hours of your life wasted fixing something over and over that other people will probably only glance at. It steals your happiness when you’re always disappointed in the final outcome because it’s not just right.

I’m now a recovering Perfectionist Procrastinator. Yes, yes I know this reflection is not a good example of recovery, but I promise you I’m working on it. I’m starting things earlier and enlisting other people to help hold me accountable.

ing that not everything is perfect. Will I look at this reflection in print and wish I’d worded something differently? Almost definitely. Is it going to be the end of the world? No. And that’s okay. I promise you that it doesn’t have to be perfect, because it never will be. Stop reaching for some unattainable goal and start living instead.

When I couldn’t find the right hook for this piece, I called my very reliable friend who I’ve known since my preschool days and asked him for some direction. Without hesitation, he reminded me of what I was missing at the beginning of high school: a sense of community at Algonquin.

For the first half of high school, I had no sense of belonging to the T-Hawk Nation.

To be fair, it wasn’t entirely due to my lack of motivation. I did try out for volleyball and visit the yearly club fair, but nothing really sparked my interest.

It wasn’t until I walked into Ms. Coppens’ Journalism class junior year when I found a role that fit just perfectly for

me. The spring semester was coming to a close and the Harbinger was taking applications for their editorial board. When I looked through the application, the role “Social Media Editor” caught my eye. For the first time, I felt this sense of excitement and purpose as a student at Algonquin. I immediately wrote down all of my ideas to improve the social media accounts and how it would be implemented. Soon after, I became the Social Media Editor of The Harbinger.

Fast forward to now, I have built relationships with everyone on the editorial board and our adviser Ms. Coppens. I have also learned some of the ins and outs of journalism and how to effectively promote the website to reach our readers.

Along with becoming familiar

with student journalism, I also found something I was really passionate about.

When I was asking my friend for help on this piece, we realized how important it is to have a purpose in our community. Whether you are involved in sports, clubs, or both, the work you put forth has indescribable value. In my opinion, no matter how much time I put into my role as an editor, The Harbinger has given me so much more. Honestly, my only regret these past four years is that I didn’t start sooner.

So, if you were to ask me my best advice for a high school student, it would be this: If you feel lost, try everything and anything, because once you find your passion, you also find your purpose.

After an eventful three years topped off with a far from normal senior year, I can say with confidence that the class of 2020 left their dynamic mark on the Algonquin community.

My first thought of Algonquin was that it’s the same as middle school, just with a heck of a lot more homework and a lot more people. About five months into high school, I had a reality check when basically nothing was going well. I’d consider

my freshman year of athletics as a train wreck since I was a benchwarmer for the freshman football team, cut from the basketball team and broke my hand less than a month after I started my first ever lacrosse season. I had realized just how much of a pain high school can be at times, so I hit the books and the weights harder than ever before.

Sophomore year was filled with many memories and challenges. Many say it’s the worst of the four years you spend in high school. That’s a statement I’d agree with now that I’m reflecting on it because you’re just expected to do things you aren’t comfortable with.

One of my favorite memories from this year was when I got off the bus for my junior varsity lacrosse game. My coach came running over to the bus and told me to suit up for varsity since injuries left them short handed. I sometimes laugh at the fact that my introduction to the varsity level of athletics would involve me getting thrown into the fire. Although we ended up losing, I’ll never forget the look of disbelief on all of the varsity players when they realized I was going in. I handled myself well and played way more than I thought I’d end up doing, which is why you have to be ready when called upon even in your second career season of lacrosse.

Junior year was when I started train-

ing like a legitimate athlete and when I had some of the highest grades of my four years. High school became my lifestyle since I embraced the fact that I was at school from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day in the fall and spring. I finally started to see the results of my hard work from brutal summer workouts and studied way more than before too.

My favorite part about T-hawk Nation is how resilient we were. When we were told that no football games would start later than 3:00 in the afternoon on Saturdays, we played as hard as we could and then would hang out with friends after so we wouldn’t let our Saturday nights go wasted because of mosquitos. I only enjoyed this change more when the team started to show how dominant we could be after a 41-0 victory for Homecoming, by far one of my favorite games in a maroon and gold jersey. Us seniors are always looking for a good time, even if it was twenty minutes after I got home from a game.

To all of the underclassmen or future T-Hawks, I offer this one piece of advice: If you are an athlete, stage performer or even just a regular student, embrace who you are and what you do. Give that thing that you’re passionate about everything you’ve got because as many senior athletes like myself can say, you’ll never see the end coming.

Forgetting Myself MEREDITH LAPIDAS Circus Freak

Algonquin offered so many opportunities that I missed. I used to be a theatre kid, a singer, a musician, and an avid artist. Algonquin offered all of these types of classes and clubs. So, why didn’t I take those opportunities?

For some reason, I found myself gravitating towards Speech & Debate, DECA, Investment Club, Steering Committee, and anything else that I found would be “intellectually intriguing.” Part of this was because I had thought that colleges favored these topics over painting and plays. The other part of me actually enjoyed business, leadership, and helping others, so I guess it worked.

Well, it worked, but it left

half of me malnourished.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m really happy that I had the opportunity to be class secretary, vice president, and a student advisor. I loved every minute of competing in DECA, and being a writing tutor was also refreshing and educational.

But, my artistic side never graced Algonquin like I had once hoped.

In middle school I was part of band, chorus, musicals, art classes and more. I honestly saw myself doing at least some of this in high school. The most I got to in reality were fundamental art classes at Algonquin.

I’m now on my way to college in California, a state that’s the center of the fruitful arts, knowing that I missed the opportunities I was given in high school to further these interests. I missed the band and chorus practices, long nights

with friends in the musicals, and finding out if I liked pottery or photography. Now I’m majoring in engineering and fear I may not be able to pursue the arts LA could offer me with such a heavy workload.

Don’t be me and forget half of yourself. Yes, I got into one of my dream schools, but it was at a price. I wanted to be an actress, a painter of

portraits, a muse. Instead, I convinced myself that I had to grow out of these passions and forgot the arts altogether.

Make sure to take a hold of every opportunity that Algonquin offers you; you can be both artistic and business oriented, a leader and a performer, smart and musical! It’s about embracing all sides of you.

The last four years have been full of personal growth and development. As I progressed it was difficult to see what I was picking up along the way, but looking back there are some definite lessons that I learned from my experiences at Algonquin.

There are obvious paths to success that we all know (like getting good grades), but I found that to stand out I had to be situationally aware and proactively look for unique opportunities around me. When I was willing to take unconventional paths and take risks I was able to enter the cycle of failure and learning that eventually led me to my accomplishments.

I’ve always valued hard work and

think it’s absolutely essential to any achievement. I’ve learned that pure effort, however, is not the only ingredient to success: we need to be strategic in where our effort is placed. Learning to differentiate between tasks that required my full effort and those that weren’t as important saved me a lot of time and energy that I could

then rededicate to other endeavors.

I’ve observed that those that are willing to embrace responsibility and accountability always come out ahead of those that are more carefree with their lives. Taking ownership of ourselves and our actions is challenging and risky, but that’s the only way we’ll be able to make any real progress.

And finally: the world can be a nasty place and being constantly courteous and kind to everyone we interact with is hard.

Even though it’s an extremely difficult exercise in self-control, the genuine respect that’s earned in return for our kindness is one of the most invaluable rewards that we can receive. I firmly believe our benevolence doesn’t just benefit those around us; there are real and tangible benefits that we too can enjoy.

hey say that senior year flies by and high school is over before you know it. For the Class of 2020, it was literally over before we knew it.

When we went home that random Thursday in March (somehow it hurts more thinking that it was a Thursday), few of us suspected we would never return to the halls of Algonquin as high school seniors.

In what seemed like the blink of an eye, this pandemic upended everyday life, taking what remained of our high school career with it. Spring sports.

Field trips. Senior week. Graduation. Those last couple months in class with our best friends relishing the peak of our time at Gonk. It was all suddenly snatched out from under us and replaced with social distancing and awkward, muted 25 minute Zoom calls. Words cannot truly express our devastation.

But, the Class of 2020 is strong and will come out of this experience stronger still. Though it has been a rude awakening, we have learned the danger in taking things for granted. We now know how lucky we were to have such amazing peers, teachers and teams. They are ones that make us desperately

long for a world where our year was never cut short.

Even we Harbinger editors wish we were creating this issue together in the publications room, a place we once thought we had spent way more time in than anyone in their right mind would ever want to.

Though these past few months have been tough and a lot of uncertainty remains, we will go into this next phase of our lives with a greater appreciation for what’s around us than any Algonquin class that has come before. We have our whole lives to look forward to and bright futures awaiting us. They are futures we will hopefully cherish more than we once would.

This crisis has taught us (albeit the hard way) to live in the moment because you never know when the rug might slip out from under you. While we’re heartbroken over what we’ve lost, we’re equally grateful for everything we had that makes this abrupt goodbye so difficult. Here’s to the next chapter.
