When going In a walk through the city in your memory is not only appearing the buildings, you have these memories of the music that got stuck in your head, the food that you tasted back in that very old shop. The smell of the flowers while you passed nearby the streets, the joy of the people dancing on the streets.

Through these little walks different senses activate, as they create the path towards spatial experiences.

Because as the architect and theoretician Pallasmaa said; “Spaces, places, and buildings are undoubtedly encountered as multisensory lived experiences. Instead of registering architecture merely as visual images, we scan our settings by the ears, skin, nose, and tongue... architecture is the art of reconciliation between ourselves and the world, and this mediation takes place through the senses.”

The Project Museum of wine is in Porto of Portugal, facing both the old city and Douro River. Despite its very strategical position, challenges are part of it as-well. The site itself is a challenge, where the beauty of each; The city and Douro River are incredible but being separated on their own.

This project focuses in three aspects; to create a relation of the museum to the city, defining the museum’s role towards the city and connect it with nature.

All of the views were just imagination of the truth because the the truth is bigger than being embodied.

In todays world we are living in, the technological advancement has made the possibility to see everything through images, as the visual sense is evolving in a very high speed, the other senses are not very present.

Pallasma in his book “Eyes of the Skin” mentions that, the sense that is fast enough to keep pace with the astounding increase of speed in the technological world is sight. But the world of the eye is causing us to live increasingly in a perpetual present, flattened by speed and simultaneity” ‘Our body is both an object among objects and that which sees and touches them.” J.Pallasma

The role of the museum towards the city shapes within the site, in between Douro River and Old city. The museum serves to the city as a transition element, which connects the river with the city.

The city, an element which brings up many senses, filled with movement, energy and history. In the other side, the Douro River, the icon of the city, the natural element where everything started, the golden river.

How can we merge these two elements together?!

Porto is filled with momentums, which are identified from the very core of the city. The buildings, and the movements that they make shape the unknown path, to be revealed only in the last moment, a moment where every sense is activated.

Wine, the identity of Porto, the heart of the city, it reaches in every corner, we can smell, see, touch, hear, taste, as we feel it becoming one with the city. An element which moves forward to become part of the transition, an experience.

This experience is brought from the city to shape the museum and emerge with the river. It moves just like the city, creates moments, generates senses, and creates memories.

Elevation Development The movements of the city become part of the elevation aswell, as they highlight the stratification as an element.

Elevation This stratification becomes part of the building, where one vertical element is presented. This vertical element balances the movement, and merges with the silhouette behind, as it becomes the core of the wine museum.

Program The main rooms represent landmarks of the city, or the museum in this case, which centralize the most fascinating points.

Entrances Entrances are treated just like the city, they are multiple, and direct you to different landmarks.

Experience Wine becomes as an atraction from the entering point throughout museum, to finally merge with river.

With emerging all of the base elements, we finally reach to the last chapter, which develops the project in another dimension. The wine is treated as natural element and it emerges with the river, but at the same time river enters to the city.

“The door handle is the handshake of the building.” J.P A saying which in the Museum of senses it becomes a starting point, but in this case the door handle would be the wine.

Wine as an element of attraction moves from the outdoor spaces to become an element of experience throughout the museum.

The first encounter to the museum represents an element which will narrate you throughout the entire journey.

Whether that is the wine, the movements, or the spaces in between. They express an energy, a smell, tacktility or visual aspects.

However this journey will guide you to one door of selection, to percieve the full narration throughout the building.

Wine as an element starts from the outer space, it attracts you, the smell, the sound of the liquid movement. It guides you towards the unknown, yet to be discovered.

This pathway towards the museum shapes to large walls which create individualisation, lets you percieve the wine flow as you enter the museum.

When entering this pathway the wine is percieved as the river, the reflection and the limitless lets you feel as the wine is infinitive.

The smell of Wine As we work with the senses, olfaction, eyesight, and tacktility become the first ones to encounter throughout this narrative.

The wine is first part of sight, but as you enter the smell of wine guides you.

The high walls do not allow any outer disturbance, they create protection from the outer world, and allow that only the olfaction to get highlighted.

The first room to encounter through this narrative is the wine tasting room, where you see the first perception of river and city movements emerging. The movement of the cubes highlight the city, as the wine flows in between them.

Creating the effect of darkness the view gets the highest importance, which allows you to touch the river.

The room leads you to different moments, as in the first one would be the moment in between, where you can see throughout, but not reach there, yet.

This element guides the people through the journey, where to reach, which is the next destination, but never shows to them the full picture.

In this case you are outside, in between the river, and the glass reflection, which shows whats next and what youre leaving behind, as a recall.

Following the wine pathway you will find yourself in a corner, a corner which emerges this wine with the infinitive river.

This element allows to percieve the element of connecting with nature which is mentioned in the beginning. And this connection is comming from the city as wine, and returning to the city as river.

The next step throughout the journey encounters us with a very familiar smell of City of Porto. The smell that comes from little gardens.

These flowers appear within the museum, but the application is within a hidden garden, where you can smell but not see.

Atrium, the core of the museum, where everything connects, the wine flows. This area provides the perception of space in-between, it gives you a hint that there is something inside, but doesnt let you reach, not yet.

The balance that the concrete gives with wine shows how powerful this area, but yet allows you to see through. The wine becomes a spreading point, which enters the rooms.

Next encounter follows up with a transition, a transition to the outside. The walls play with the light and at the same time it gives you little views in between but never spoils the image.

Structurally these elements represent the movement of the city, the facades which all have the similar movement.

When reaching outside, the wine spreads in the entire area, leaving you in the middle of the river. Both of your sides are filled with wine, and seeing the horizon you see the wine as infinitive.

This path leads you to the emerging point, a point where you can see Duoro River coming Inside, becoming one with the building.

The final moment of this journey has come, the last steps guide you through an outdoor exhibition, filled with natural elements, and of course, the city itself.

To reach to the momentum, you still have a few steps, which are guided through exhibition walls, narrow path to reach to the top, where the bridge of porto with the city beauty is laid.
