KEY Owner Breeding Breeder Jockey Trainer Sponsor Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: S Br
Selected to win the race
Good chance of being placed
By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating
For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
It is an absolute pleasure to be sponsoring several races across the card at Southwell this afternoon and one of the most exciting runners isShantouLuckyinthePaulFerguson’sJumpers ToFollowHandicapChase.JamesOwen’seightyear-old has won all four starts in impressive fashion since moving to the stable and bids for the five-timer up a further 20lb here.
His main danger may come in the form of returning course and distance winner Finn Lough, who was last seen finishing second in a strong Aintree handicap back in May, whilst fellow course winner Tiger Orchid returns to fences after an encouraging spin over hurdles whenfourthatUttoxeterlasttime,now3lbbelow his last winning mark. Justin Landy’s Do No Wrong is the other course and distance winner in the field, winning easily here back in June, but the nine-year-old must bounce back from a pulled-up effort at Uttoxeter latest.
Martin Keighley’s Pike Road was a faller over hurdles at Uttoxeter when last seen but displayed plenty of ability when cantering to a whopping 36-length success at Hexham back in May and the six-year-old makes his chase debut under Sean Bowen here. James Bowen takes the ride aboard Peejaybee for Mickey Bowen and the experienced nine-year-old is a three-time winner over fences. He enjoyed a consistent campaign last season, winning at both Perth and Ffos Las, and the top-weight is one who goes well when fresh.
Galileo gelding Bluegrass has won four times over hurdles for Stuart Edmunds and makes his return following wind surgery in the Weatherbys Racing Bank Handicap Hurdle. The six-year-old, formerly with Aidan O’Brien, is only 3lb higher than when winning at Fakenham in March but does tend to need the run on reappearance.
Alternatively, Martin Keighley’s YesIndeed tends to go well fresh and scored twice over fences for his new yard last term. The eight-year-old benefits from a much-reduced hurdles mark here and again has the in-form Sean Bowen in thesaddle.ForgetTheWayisthered-hotJames Owen’s representative here and, whilst below parlasttime,isjust3lbhigherthanwhenwinning by a wide margin at Huntingdon 11 months ago.
Nine-year-old Whiskeywealth was a useful handicapper for Terrence O’Brien in Ireland and won the Listed Shamrock Handicap Chase at Gowran Park for the trainer 18 months ago. He makes his stable debut for the Donald McCain
yard here but does run from 5lb higher than his latest Irish mark. The lightly raced Nowmelad is another making his debut for a new stable for Henry Oliver and is an intriguing contender basedonvictoriesatUttoxeterandHerefordlast season.
Masked Man looks an extremely exciting prospect for Nigel and Willy Twiston-Davies and makes his hurdles debut in the Jodie Standing’s Point-To-Point Recruits Novices’ Hurdle. The Masked Marvel gelding is a half-brother to Willie Mullins’ Batman Girac and was a mightily impressive winner of his sole point at Stowlin.
Queensland Boy was four times a winner on the Flat – rated 58 on the level – and makes his hurdles debut for Ian Williams whilst both Cinnodin and Unexpected Ask have hurdles experience but will likely have to improve on prior performances to be competitive here.
Stuart Edmunds’ At Mangan Bridge has shown the most over hurdles thus far in two starts, highlighted by a third at Uttoxeter in May, but is another who must improve in what could prove a good race. Mel Rowley’s Tufton was well beaten in an Aintree bumper when last seen but is related to plenty of jumpers.
Progressive mare Heather Honey chases the four-timer in the International Stud Book Committee Handicap Hurdle having rose up the handicap with victories at Newcastle and Bangor. The six-year-old returns from a break raised a further 8lbs for her latest success but appeared to win with plenty in hand and likely hasn’t stopped improving yet.
There are a further two last-time-out winners set to line up in a competitive field, with Jack Jones’AnBradanFeasarunningonwelltoscore at Worcester on his return to hurdles a month ago. The five-year-old steps up in trip here but did shape as if it would suit when winning last time. The other is Adrian Keatley’s top-weighted Belvedere Blast, who stayed on strongly from the rear to score at Market Rasen last time. The seven-year-old drops back in trip here from a 3lbhighermarkbuthaswonoverasshortastwo miles in the past.
OliverGreenallandJoshGuerriero’slightlyraced five-year-old Kuzco reverted to hurdles with a good victory at Bangor on his penultimate start and showed enough when fourth at that venue last time to suggest he can remain competitive from his current mark of 104
