Matty Bown started working at Pontefract, aged 11. He worked until the war broke out, where he fought bravely on leave, then returned to Pontefract and continued working as a groundsman up into his 70s.

The Bown family has worked with Pontefract Racecourse for many years and continues to follow in Matty’s footsteps Granddaughter Ruth says her Grandfather would do ‘Owt for Anyone’, remembering his hardworking nature and lively social life.
