Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances) The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

WELCOME
Good evening I’d like to welcome you all to the final Jumps meeting of the season at Ffos Las Racecourse, the Annual Swansea Bay Business Club Race night with races proudly sponsored by Celtic Subaru
We are very proud that South Wales’s largest and most prestigious Networking group continue to join us for their Summertime Celebration, as we all look forward to another great night’s racing.
The iconic Welsh rugby player Ray Gravell always used to say, “West is Best” and this has been proved again with an amazing jumps season for our Welsh Jockeys Owners and Trainers, blazing a trail across the UK and Ireland. We’ve certainly have seen so much to be proud of.
Firstly, we have to say congratulations to Sean Bowen for becoming Champion Jockey, after his horrific injury setback last season which ultimately cost him the title, it was fantastic to see Sean get what he deserved this season, showing his talent, hard work, dedication and skill in winning the title in style and passing 1000 the winner milestone in the process.
His recent 5 winners in 6 races at Ffos really showed us all a young man at the top of his game, and a worthy champion. May it be the first of many Champ!
Sean leads a group of exciting young Welsh Jockeys who really are taking the UK by storm, which includes his brother James Bowen, Carmarthen’s Ben Jones and Jack Tudor.
Another regular at Ffos Las, Trainer Rebecca Curtis recently teamed up with Sean to win the Irish Grand National on Haiti Couleurs at Fairyhouse Racecourse
And who can forget Lorcan Williams’s amazing Champion Hurdle victory earlier this year romping home to a 50,000 crowd at Cheltenham on Golden Ace
And looking to the future, seeing the talented next generation of jockeys like Ed Vaughan coming through, the future really does look bright for Welsh Horse racing.
We also said a fond farewell in the saddle for Alan Johns who had his last race as a professional jockey here at Ffos Las winning on Bumpy Johnson in front of his friends and family
Alan who is now developing his career in media presenter in racing, is and always will be a firm favorite here in West Wales
What a season, and it’s a fact that your local racecourse is proud of you all.
And finally, I’d like to say a bit thank you to you, our Annual Members and racegoers who continue to support your local racecourse It is really genuinely appreciated.
Now it’s on to the Flat season over the Summer with our first meeting being the Family Fun Race Day on Sunday 22nd June.
Yours in racing

Procedures
If an incident occurs which is beyond our control, it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency.
As part of our Safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation, which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your immediate belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area Should it be necessary to evacuate the course itself, there will be two main options; firstly to return to your vehicles if safe to do so and leave via the main entrance Secondly, should it not be safe to return to your vehicles, you will be requested to leave via emergency evacuation gates, onto the racecourse itself, where you will receive further instructions. It may give you peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, in the event of an emergency, remember;
• Take your belongings with you.
• Under the directions of the stewards, proceed quickly and calmly to the safe area.
